4 out of 5 stars Excellently Written And Informed Despite Lack of Citations.......2006-02-05

Lagging a bit behind Jo Ann Brewer's and George S. Morrison's texts, Feeney & Company's book thoroughly presents the field in its essentials and reference points, but fails to internally cite the groundmaking scholarly works that put forth the concepts. With ever increasing accountability in the field, teachers need much training in accumulating the internal integrity and knowledge through a historical derived logic. Knowning where commonplace early childhood concepts originate begins this training.

A good third text.

2 out of 5 stars a disappointment.......2007-07-13

This book purports to based on high quality research. If so, the author has not made a good comunication job of setting it forth. I found the book superficial. It was also looked through by a true scientist resident here and panned it badly. It's a good idea not well done in my opinion

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-04-03

This book is great. It explains why I make some of the choices I do and how others are different than me. We make different choices because we have different motivations. Example, I love going to eat at new restaurants with my friends. Not suprisingly I score high in eating, curiosity and social activity.

5 out of 5 stars A breakthrough.......2007-01-16

I am a trainer/consultant with a academic degree in the area of adult-education. My work and "want-to-know drive" do put me in a constant search for the best way in guiding and coaching people; discover the truth about themselves. Reading ...Who am I? The 16 Basic Desires that Motivate our Actions and Define our....by Steven Reiss...was really a eye-opener.
I'm working with the ideas and the people I touch with the insights are baffled at the "thruth" of themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Revolutionary motivational foundation.......2005-08-02

I learned about Maslow's motivational hierarchy decades ago but found it not very useful for determining what an individual would do, particularly in a specific circumstance. This book provided a scientifically-appealing foundation for making that kind of determination. It well explained why I get along better with some people than others and what I can do about improving my relationships with those people with whom I don't seem to fit. After testing myself, spouse, children, and close friends and associates, I believe I better understand both myself and them. I can better predict what they might do and where they are going with their thought processes. I believe this book contains a revolutionary foundation for understanding the motives of people.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading, but repetitive.......2004-05-04

I have read many books about self help, psychology, and human behavior, and I believe I learned more from this one than from any other book. Reiss's theory is that all human beings are motivated by sixteen basic desires, and your personal prescription for happiness depends on the relative strengths of these desires. He argues that these desires are genetically determined. I believe that the science behind the "Reiss Profile" is sound, unlike the many other similar books that claim to tell you about yourself. The theory of personality originated with William James; Reiss has extended this work and in this book makes his important findings available to the general reader.

My only complaint about this book is that it is very wordy, which is so absolutely typical of self-help books. He presents the theory concisely and clearly, then goes on to apply the theory to many different areas of human behavior. This seems excessively detailed and it makes for tiresome reading, so I skimmed much of the second half of the book. At times the book approaches a catalog in unreadability.

By all means get the book and answer the questions to determine your own desire profile. I believe you will learn more about yourself, more quickly, than you have ever done before.

Book Description

It's challenging enough to be a normal high school senior -- but Caitlin O'Conner has a host of new difficulties to deal with in the third book of Melody Carlson's widely popular and fascinating teen series. Time is critical to help the orphans in Mexico, missions-minded Caitlin believes, but Mom and Dad are set on her attending college. Meanwhile, her relationship with Josh takes on a serious tone via e-mail -- threatening her commitment to "kiss dating goodbye." When Beanie begins dating an African-American, Caitlin's concern over dating seems to be misread as racism. One thing is obvious: God is at work through this dynamic girl in very real but puzzling ways. A soul-stretching time of racial reconciliation at school and within her church helps her discover God's will as never before.

Great teenage stories that draw students to want to read the book. I can't keep the series of books in my classroom. As soon as it's checked in it's checked out by someone else.

2 out of 5 stars A little dissapointed.......2006-07-14

From the very first chapter of this book I felt put off. I had read the first two books about three years ago while I was fourteen and I had really enjoyed them. Recently I decided that I should finish the series and so I began reading 'Who I am'. The character of Cailtin seemed to me to be nothing more than another spoiled little hypocrite almost everything she said in the book was a contradiction of something said earlier. I felt that it tried to manipulate the reader into thinking that ONLY christians are good and saved and that any other religion is wrong it also put me off when it came to the issue of race and sexuality I really dont think the subject matter was handled in a responsible way. I wouldnt recommend this to anyone except a deep christian or someone over the age of 18 after they have decided THEMSELVES what is right and wrong because this book has the power to manipulate and guilt people.

4 out of 5 stars Finding Yourself.......2006-02-10

Caitlin O' Conner is a senior who has everyday problems like everyone else, from guy problems to what she wants to major in in college. She often tries to avoid her problems by fixing someone else's problems, or by doing good for others. Will Caitlin find the solutions to her problems, or find who she's really meant to be? Will she ever learn to deal with all the problems life has in store for her? Everyday holds a new challenge for Caitlin, but she always looks to God and to her friends to help her through it. Only after the loss of a classmate, does Caitlin learn that the only thing constant in her life is God, and he can help her through everything no matter what is going on in her life.
I absolutely loved this whole book. Caitlin deals with problems that every teen girl can relate to. It really helps you to understand what is going on in the book, and it also helps to bring you closer to God. The one and only thing that I didn't like about this book was what happened to Jewel. It was really sad, and I really don't think that it should have happened to her.
I would recommend this book to any teenage girl, or to anyone who likes Melody Carlson's books. I would also recommend that you read the rest the rest of this series, The Diary of a Teenage Girl. Overall, this was a great book that any girl can relate to and would like. I know I liked this book and I hope you'll like it too.

5 out of 5 stars Finding Yourself.......2006-02-10

The book On My Own by Melody Carlson is an excellent book. It is the third book in the series Diary of a Teenage Girl. Caitlin is really finding out what she has to do with her life and where she'll end up. She is really confused about if she wants to go to Mexico to help the kids down there, or stay home and go to college. She is still sticking to her commitment to God by not dating, but she still has doubts about it. Caitlin meets someone new who will show her that her life is good with God and will always be. She will have to face some challenging troubles at home with her family. During the book Caitlin's mother got pregnant, but something goes wrong. Read and see how the family reacts to what has happened. Through this book, discover what decisions Caitlin will make about what to do with her life. Will she break her commitment to God by dating someone? Will she find out who she truly is?
Some of the things I liked in this book are the situations that Caitlin is in, the true consequences of what decisions she makes, and the friendships that form. Caitlin will be in some difficult situations and will have to decide what is really best for her. Meeting new people, she will be able to see how they live their life, and what their relationship with God is like. Racism, everyone hates it to some extent. In this book that was something I didn't like. I know it teaches everyone things, but I just didn't like reading about it. Blacks get hurt everyday by whites! Everyone is the same, no matter what skin color you have. I always feel sad for blacks when they are getting criticized because it hurts each and every one of them.
I would recommend this book to every teenage girl who just loves to read about veritable life. I'm sure if anyone has read the last two books, they are planning to read this novel. This read was just really good. Would you pick up the book and start reading already?!

Book Description

There is 'The Ugly One,' whose only solace comes when she is locked inside her own head. In 'Wanted: A Thug,' a teenager seeks advice on how to steal her best friend's bad-guy boyfriend. And then there's Erika, who only likes white boys. Sharon Flake takes readers through the minds of girls trying to define themselves while struggling to remain relevant to the boys in their lives. This is a complex, often humorous, always on-point exposition of black youth resolving to find self-worth . . . any way they know how.

3 out of 5 stars Boys, Girls and Hormones.......2007-06-19

We read this one a month ago. The title led us to believe this book was about teens relationship with God, which would've been a good subject to read about. But this was not about God. It was ten stories about teen relationships. We pretty much enjoyed reading them all. Our favorite was A Letter to My Daughter. We enjoyed this one the most because a father was writing to his daughter explaining to her what boys were all about and what their intentions were when dating or having a girlfriend. It's always good to hear it from a male perspective. This way, girls will have the inside scoop and know exactly what to lookout for.

On the negative side, we wished that some of the characters were of other ethnic groups instead of mostly urban African American. The story, "I Like White Boys" was good. We wanted to read more racially integrated stories. Sometimes it's difficult to read slang. We try to read books that doesn't have a lot of slang because it's not the standard in this society. We recognize that urban communities have citizens that uses slang and improper English, but we're trying to change all that by incorporating ourselves into this American society by speaking proper or standard English. It's not that we disapprove of urban books. No, not at all because we love the BLUFORD SERIES! It's just that we want to be able to articulate a sentence when we go on job interviews.

All in all, it was an okay read and we would recommend it to other teens.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reading.......2007-01-26

This book was excellent. We used this book for a discussion with a youth group. The young ladies enjoyed all the stories. They could relate to the young people in the stories. It gave them a picture of how girls see themselves and how boys and men around them view them. I enjoyed reading the book and I was excited to discuss it with them. I would encourage young and old to read this book.

4 out of 5 stars it had it's good and bad moments...i'll agree.......2006-12-26

So i aint no good girl: ***** five stars, it was one of my favorites. I'm glad the book started with this story because it makes up for some of the crappier ones. I like how Ms. Flake portrays this girl as tough and scared at the same time. She doesn't let anyone talk her down, except Raheem, who abuses her and she feels that if she just "goes with the flow" she'll keep him.

Girl didn't i say i dont write no letters: ***** Five stars again. Excellent. i love how i can relate to devita about her liking Jaquel and gaining enough strength to tell him how she really feels, through letters.

The ugly one: **** four stars. it was OK i didn't understand the complete end, when she is dancing with the Jamaican dude, is he real? I would've liked it more if he was a real person.

Mookie in Love: **** four stars. It was OK as well. the story would've been better if it was in his perspective, not the cousins.

Don't be disrepecting me: *** Three stars. I didn't like it that much. Ms. Flake seemed to rush into the story and it didn't end well, at all.

I like White Boys: **** Fours stars. I liekd it, i could actually relate, but it would've been better if Erika picked Chet or Johnny or that guy with the blonde hair, i dont know. I don't think Ms. Flake ended the story well. Too much suspense i guess.

Jacob's rules: ***** Excellent story great narration. I liked Marimba a lot too.

I know a stupid boy when i see one: *** i did not like the story. i wont really get into it because there are too many things to talk about but i will say this. UNREALISTIC

Hunting for boys: ***** Great story. no comment. Too good for words.

wanted: a thug: ****\* four and a half. I liked this story. Great suspense. I wish Ms Flake could make a continuation of these..oh well *sigh*

Not a boy and letter to my daughter are good as well. Both *** three stars.

5 out of 5 stars Who am I without him?.......2006-11-22

I enjoyed reading this book because it had to do with teenagers just like me and how they handle some problems. This book is a great way to show teeagers how teenagers hadle their problems. So if you read this book you will understand how teenagers handle some issues. And if you are a adult then you will see how us teenagers handle some problems that we get.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-10-27

Sharon, you did an excellent job with these short stories. My favorite was "Hunting for Boys." This book is all about girls and they boys they like. It's about learning about relationships. It demonstrates puberty and hormones kicking in. It reminds me of the saying by Dolly Parton on confusion: "they don't know whether to scratch their watch or wind their behind." Moms and Dads, please get this book for your daughters. They will enjoy the stories and may even find themselves in some of them. Each story has a different premise but they all tie into the same plot--getting with a boy. It reminds me when I first started liking boys when I was in junior high. I definitely recommend this book for the average teenager. Well done, Sharon, and keep 'em coming.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and Insightful.......2007-10-12

John Powells book, Why Am I Afraid to Tell You Who I Am is a great book looking into the reasons why we are the way we are (Human Behaviour). He looks at human behaviour from a more of a psychological perspective rather than a christian one. He has great insights into why we act a certain way and the "roles" people play in life. The reason he gives is due to our fundamental need to be loved and accepted.

I recommend this book not only for it's insightfullness, but also for the list at the back of the book in regard to the roles people play in life. Eg. the Expert, the joker, the sex kitten, the conformist, etc. etc.

Hope this helps

5 out of 5 stars One of the best I've read.......2007-08-05

John Powell writes in such a way that he is easy to understand. What he writes makes sense. He uses examples and research to back up his points. I would suggest this to wanting to become more self aware.

1 out of 5 stars Admitted sexual child abuse.......2007-02-27

A settlement has been reached in connection this Roman Catholic priest accused of sexual abuse. At least six adults claimed father John Powell abused them in the late 60's and 70's. No criminal charges were filed against Powell but the priest has admitted to the abuse.

4 out of 5 stars Why am I Afraid to Read This Book?.......2006-03-10

Father Powell's book has become a classic, and rightly so. It cogently states the reasons for truthtelling, as a means of increasing intimacy, if that is one's desire in a relationship. I read it twice, and gave it to my partner, who read it once, and then asked "Why did you give that book to me? There must be a reason." Of course there was, and it had its desired effect of opening up a discussion of previously avoided topics, which increased my understanding in several ways, and about more than just our relationship, but also my previous unsuccessful relationship.
The principal caveat about this book is its dated nature. Since it was written in 1969, it addresses "talking therapy" and mentions nothing about cognitive behavior therapy, which has proven efficacy, but did not become popularized until well after the book was written. Some things are too painful to talk about, war experiences being one common example, so his approach sometimes fails.
Overall, I would still highly recommend this book, but wish it could be updated.

struggling with their own personal "fit" in life.

4 out of 5 stars a good balance of rational and personal.......2006-11-10

I have been reading and researching the United States homeless issues for a few months and found this book to be fairly insightful. Liebow writes from a very intimate point of view and backs up his observations with sources and facts. This is a very palatable introductory book to the general issues of homelessness in America today.

5 out of 5 stars In a World of McMansions.......2006-06-15

In a world of McMansions, there is homelessness. Liebow is a participant-observer. He had written TALLY'S CORNER at an earlier point.

Elliot Liebow tries to make the relationships with the women symmetrical. In his study he ignores mental illness since he is an anthropologist. Three night shelters and a day shelter are portrayed. The names of persons and places are changed.

Women come into homelessness because they are poor and powerless. Hard living is the norm. Street living creates problems of bathing, washing, eating, and sleeping sufficiently and safely. There is perennial fatigue and boredom. Protection of belongings and lack of storage creates bag ladies. Health suffers. Treatment of choice is unavailable.

Some women are too sick, old, or crazy to work. Others value work over walking all day. Looking for work is a way of holding onto humanity.

Shelters replace broken families. Mentally disabled residents have difficulty with their own relatives over money and power. Some residents hit the streets when they fear violence will erupt. Shelter providers fear violent behavior and keep records. Black-listing is common.

The women suffer from losses of privacy and dignity. They prefer a shelter Liebow calls The Refuge where few questions are asked. Providers of services to the unsheltered fear creating dependency. History shows that after the Great Depression, the opportunities presented by World War Two emptied out the skid rows.

Religious belief is a topic of shelter talk. Women see themselves as equal before God. Belief can invest homelessness with meaning.

The women talk about jobs, not careers. Elementary security is a paramount concern. The women are prevented from planning through their sense of powerlessness. They live one day at a time as a coping strategy.

Homelessness is rooted in poverty. Unemployment, underemployment, and substandard wages are causes. Really, now, does a market system require human sacrifice?

5 out of 5 stars Tell Them Who I Am.......2000-04-28

With his book, Tell Them Who I Am: The Lives of Homeless Women, Elliot Liebow has done an excellent job of putting the facts of shelter life together. His research was not done in a far away library with his nose in a book, rather he learned first hand by working in women's shelters and soup kitchens in Washington DC. In his book, he explores the multitude of ways that "the humanity of the women is under constant threat" and gives the reader an in-depth and intensely personal view into the different facets of the lives of homeless women. Liebow continues throughout the book to deliver the facts to the reader in such a way that they reveal the brutal truth of the women's lives without dragging the reader to a place where (s)he is overcome with pity and shame. Instead, Liebow manages to connect the reader to the women, showing their humanity. I wanted to cheer them on, encourage them, defend each of them, from opinionated Betty to retarded Ginger to Grace, a born-again Christian, although these aren't the actual names of the women. This book makes a the reader see homeless women as people and forces the reader to look beyond stereotypes. It gives the women faces and shows their individuality. Tell Them Who I Am also goes into some detail about the different shelters themselves, the ways they are run, and what function they serve. It also mentions such things as Social Services and Medicare, pointing out what they provide and, very importantly, the weaknesses that these services and others have when dealing with the homeless. These weaknesses are evidenced through the multitude of difficulties that the women experienced in dealing with various "helpful" agencies. Probably the most important reason for a person to read Tell Them Who I Am is that one can learn from it. The facts contained within this very well-written book are the facts that could go a long way toward a better understanding of homeless women and what can be done to aid them. The fear that "in all its forms stands out," can be worn away with some of the understanding can be found in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Liebow brings humanness to the lives of the homeless........1997-04-13

Tell Them Who I Am is a tale about several homeless women and one non-homeless man. For all its merits as an ethnography of women's shelters, which are many, one of the most endearing things about this book is its author. In 1984 Elliot Liebow found out he had terminal cancer. He promptly quit his job at the National Institute of Mental Health and headed for the soup kitchens and shelters of a small city outside of Washington, D.C. Taking notes "out of habit" he gradually compiled his thoughts (and those of his informants) as he got to know the women of these shelters. His participant-observation approach led him to be very involved as an actor in the lives of the women he met, and they too became involved in the writing of their stories. The result is a fascinating book which details the trials of homelessness alongside the joys and sorrows of being human

5 out of 5 stars Enlightening.......2007-03-19

This is a very good book. It let you know what your standing really is with God. It has great examples of what the author is trying to express in each chapter. This is a book that I would recommend to every christian that wants to understand who they are in Christ.

5 out of 5 stars The book that can change your life.......2006-11-06

Neil T. Anderson has written many books, but this one is very concise and filled with the truth of who we are in Christ. To know this is good, but to believe it is life changing.

1 out of 5 stars Lacking Depth.......2006-04-27

The scripture refrences are great in this book, but the actual book is lacking a great deal of substance. The first few chapters were incredibly shallow. Towards the middle of the book he makes some good points, but none are thought provoking. I found myself getting frustrated with his lack of fore thought in his examples and was offended by some flippant remarks. Please, if you are wanting to do a Bible study, study the Bible and write down your own thoughts or discuss them with a group. Don't rely on what others say, your perception is just as valid!

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and Freeing!.......2006-01-13

Our whole lives are spent discovering who we are in this world. We believe everything BUT the truth because sometimes we just don't know. This book will transform your ignorance to knowledge and allow you to live the life God truly intended. Every person needs this foundational book!

Book Description

Nexus offers an engaging and insightful journey of an odd mix of people drawn together to a spiritual retreat to overcome personal pain. This book will please readers of spiritual, new age, inspirational, self-help and visionary fiction books. It weaves insights within the narrative like The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield and The Peaceful Warrior series by Dan Millman.

Starting with a dramatic suicide scene through intimate details of the struggle of Logan Andrews with depression and despair, we are brought on a journey of inner struggle and personal transformation. The reader is transported to a spiritual retreat where the experiences of people at the retreat provide illuminating life lessons. The tone of book creates an authentic journey that is both exploratory and insightful.

The overriding theme in Nexus is mystical in its nature, narrating experiences of deeper connection felt with one another and all of life. This is poignantly highlighted in key passages, including Logan's empathy for a dying fish in Chapter 6.

5 out of 5 stars Need for Spiritual Change.......2007-07-01

I've read many spiritual books and this one really spoke to me with a story that communicated about both the highs and lows of spiritual life through the touching journey of people at a retreat center. Each person in the story is dealing with their own sorrow from the depression-despair of Logan, Sarah's loss of direction and Muriel's desire to be comforted in her old age. Steven is fixated on his money-making schemes and in order for him to experience growth, he needs to connect to the path of love.

The story speaks of something deeper - a need for spiritual change. It isn't always stated on the surface and you have to dig deeper to recognize that as the central theme of this book. Yet you feel this impulse motivating the communication between teachers and students at the retreat center and the experiences there allude to a deeper bond - to the Nexus that connects us all through our heart where empathy and compassion can grow with experiences of our Oneness. The compassion Logan shows for a dying fish vividly captures this theme. This vision of non-duality is always there beneath the surface though our ego stands in the way of its realization.

The message in this book is beautiful and so I want others to know about it. Through spiritual books like this, we can delve into consciousness transformation and share it with others.

1 out of 5 stars Really Bad. Don't Buy.......2007-06-30

I made the mistake of purchasing this book because it was referenced in a review for The Road (an amazing fiction currently on the best seller list). Now I realize I was probably led into buying it by one of the authors' friends or supporters. The 5 star reviews are bias, to say the least! The dialogue is beyond bad. It is stilted and at times downright silly. I love top quality spiritual writings like "The Power of Now" by E. Tolle or the writings of D. Chopra. It's not that I am spiritually closed, I just know very bad writing when I see it.
This "fiction" is an attempt to flesh out the spiritual teachings of the two authors through poorly crafted, one dimensional characters. I would rather drink flax oil and fast for a week to better my soul than read this kind of stuff. I anticipate receiving some unsupportive votes for this review, and these will likely come from the friends of the authors who have written the 5 star reviews. So be it. I'd rather be honest and save the potential Amazon customer some money!

5 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking.......2007-05-30

NEXUS is an absorbing guide to the dazzling universe of spirituality! Written in the appealing genre of a new age novel I found NEXUS to be a remarkable psychological and spiritual adventure filled with mystery, enchantment, romance, insights, as well as being highly realistic in terms of life's joys and sorrows. I just couldn't put the book down!!!

The diverse assortment of characters were realistic, and the plot was deep, lively and fast paced throughout. NEXUS WORKED AT VERY DEEP LEVELS OF MY MIND TO PENETRATE MY SUBCONSCIOUS AND TO EXPAND AND INSPIRE MY SUPERCONSCIOUS MIND. WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!!!

By carefully reading NEXUS and reflecting on the philosophical insights inherent throughout the book I found that I could tap into my deepest inner centre of being- my inner source of strength, wisdom and compassion...what a discovery!!!

I heard about NEXUS from a friend and that is why I bought the book. I told another friend about NEXUS but she had already just finished reading it and was most impressed.

It seems that people everywhere are suddenly experiencing an intense attraction to NEXUS, one of the most valuable books I've read in a long time.

Another new age novel that I highly recommend is The Saint, the Surfer, and the CEO: A Remarkable Story About Living Your Heart's Desires

5 out of 5 stars Spiritually Uplifting.......2007-05-21

Every once in a while you come across a book that resonates at a deeper soulful level. "Nexus: A Neo Novel" is one of those books that touches you through a spiritual journey of transformation of people in the book. Their transformation is an inner one at the level of their heart and psyche.

For Logan Andrews the transformation requires that he move from negative thoughts and emotions to positive ones. This task is fraught with difficulties, since even at a spiritual retreat intended to help people find the centre of their being called the Nexus, Logan is confronted with his greatest loss as he meets his ex, Sarah.

I really liked the sub-plot with Steven, an arrogant millionaire, who at first is irritating but in time he grows on you and becomes an endearing person. Steven believes that money is the answer to life's problems but has he lost his way?

Even though the writers of "Nexus" have their own unique voice, still this book reminds me of other visionary writers like James Redfield, Carlos Castaneda and Dan Millman. I highly recommend "Nexus" as a deeply moving experience of personal transformation whose message spiritual readers will most appreciate.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful Insights.......2007-04-23

The appeal of "Nexus" lies in an original story that is fast-paced and chock-full of powerful insights. This book is about transformation as an organic process.

The novel is unique as a collaborative effort by two authors who have successfully integrated their writing into an inspiring narrative. This book explores the ups and downs of spiritual life through the journey of people at a spiritual retreat and we can relate their experiences to our own life.

I love this book for its piercing insights and a memorable soulful journey. "Nexus" reminds me of books like "The Celestine Prophecy," "The Life of Pi" and "The Alchemist" - some other books that I've enjoyed reading.
