Book Description

It started the summer of 2002, when the Springfield librarian, Molly McGrew, by mistake drove her bookmobile into the zoo.

In this rollicking rhymed story, Molly introduces birds and beasts to this new something called reading. She finds the perfect book for every animal—tall books for giraffes, tiny ones for crickets. “She even found waterproof books for the otter, who never went swimming without Harry Potter.” In no time at all, Molly has them “forsaking their niches, their nests, and their nooks,” going “wild, simply wild, about wonderful books.” Judy Sierra’s funny animal tale coupled with Marc Brown’s lush, fanciful paintings will have the same effect on young Homo sapiens. Altogether, it’s more fun than a barrel of monkeys!

I just love reading this book! I think it is fun and appreciate all the references in it. We first found it at the library and I had to own it! Also love all the pictures of so many different animals. My daughter really enjoys naming all the animals.

4 out of 5 stars Wild About Animals.......2006-10-12

The book Wild About Books is a fiction book by Judy Sierra. The main characters are Molly McGrew and animals at the zoo.
First, by mistake Molly McGrew took her bookmobile to the zoo! Then, when she began to read a book, all the animals loved it. They wanted to learn how to read too! Soon the animals learned how to read and loved it. They borrowed their own books! They liked to read so much that the books got worn and lost. Later, the animals decided to write their own books to read. The problem was there was nowhere to keep them. Finally, the animals built their own library out of the wood in their own habitats to keep their own written books and some of Molly McGrew's which were very overdue!
This is a very exciting book and I enjoyed reading it. The book Wild About Animals is also funny. I recommend this book to young children who like animals and also like funny books like this one!

5 out of 5 stars Possibly ONE OF THE GREATEST RHYMING BOOKS I've read yet........2006-10-12

This book has a dedication at the end to the author's favorite doctor, Dr. Seuss. The style of this book is quite similar to his famous rhyming stories but in its own style. Judy Sierra, author, really shines in this book with her choice of words and importance of really truly being wild about books. Through one of the main characters, Judy teaches animals to be nice to their books and to read all types of books. She explains haikus and zoolitzer prizes with terrific descriptive words. The paintings, done by Marc Brown, accompany the story perfectly. Marc painted such detail, variety, precision and just plain old fun-looking animals. One of my favorite parts/rhymes from 'Wild About Books' is, "In a flash, every beast in the zoo was stampeding To learn all about this new something called reading." or one of the more clever pages, "Raccoons read alone and baboons read in bunches And llamas read dramas while eating their llunches." I think this story will truly inspire children to read and enjoy it. Definetly great to use in a classroom or be read by a librarian with lots of enthusiasm.

Book Description

Marley and Me meets All Creatures Great and Small, as an ailing but lovable orphan buffalo joins a Santa Fe household.

A sprawling suburban house in Santa Fe is not the kind of home where a buffalo normally roams, but Veryl Goodnight and Roger Brooks are not your ordinary animal lovers. Over a hundred years after Veryl's ancestors, Charles and Mary Ann Goodnight, hand-raised two baby buffalo to help save the species from extinction, the sculptor and her husband adopt an orphaned buffalo calf of their own. Against a backdrop of the old American West, A Buffalo in the House tells the story of a household situation beyond any sitcom writer's wildest dreams

Charlie has no idea he's a buffalo and Roger has no idea just how strong the bond between man and buffalo can be. In the historical shadow of the near-extermination of a majestic and misunderstood animal, Roger sets out to save just one buffalo. Written in the tradition of Ian Frazier's Great Plains and the work of Garrison Keillor and Bill Bryson, A Buffalo in the House tells an important, uplifting story about one animal's ability to touch human lives and reconnect people of all ages to the vanished past.

I thouroughly enjoyed this fabulous true tale of the love of a man and woman for an animal, in this case a wild bison, which makes for an unusual situation. It was well written and completely enjoyable from start to finish and I had a few tears along the way.

Buffalo are not exactly new to me. About sixty miles south of the little Western Oklahoma town where I was reared there was a game preserve near Lawton and Ft. Sill with buffalo we would see on our annual summer vacation trip to my grandparents ranch near Ardmore.
The herd grew each year and a few were killed. One year some guy conned my father into buying a quarter of a buffalo because it was much cheaper than the beef we could not afford.
My mother was a great cook but she never mastered cooking buffalo roasts or other dishes that were not flat and tasteless. Today the finest restaurants have buffalo steaks and meatloaf on the menu and you can buy it ground at supermarkets.
As I began to go to Colorado on trips year around I would see the buffalo on the north side of I-70 west of Denver near the Evergreen or Chief Hosa exits.
But my first close up with a buffalo was when I did one of the dumbest and most dangerous things in my life - a solo snowmobile trip around the lower circle of Yellowstone in January.
I had a great distaste for snowmobiles but it was either that or going to West Yellowstone for one of the group tourist rides.
In Jackson Hole, Wyoming, I left my hotel about 3 a.m. one morning for Flagg Ranch just outside the southern gate to Yellowstone where snowmobiles were rented.
The Flagg people put me in a well-insulated snowsuit, instructed me on operating the snowmobile and then there was a final warning to, if around buffalo, always keep your snowmobile between yourself and the bison.
I left when it was still dark but daylight opened up a cloudless, blue sky and I arrived at Old Faithful just in time to get a fancy new Sony video camera out of my backpack to shoot the geyser.
All day I scofflawed the Yellowstone speed limit and stopped only to refuel and drink something hot.
About four that afternoon nearing sunset I encountered a large buffalo bull facing me on the road he seemed to feel was his own. I stopped, killed the engine and hastily got my video camera ready.
The bull started to approach me directly. As the tape rolled, the only sound heard was the crunch, crunch, crunch of his feet on the frozen road. Wow. I thought I had myself some real footage a wildlife documentary maker would kill for.
As the bull neared the front of my machine, he suddenly turned and walked into the woods.
I put the camera away and continued on in the darkness. Had I an accident or any other problem, it is doubtful I could have survived the night in sub-zero temperatures.
As for my great tape, the sound on the camera was defective and without it the footage of the bull coming at me was useless.
Years later I was driving from Arizona to Colorado and stopped north of Santa Fe to have a short visit with Veryl Goodnight, a noted sculptress, and her husband Roger Brooks at their ranch.
It was late morning and Roger and I were sitting in their yard having a beer when I felt something nudge my shoulder. Turning, I again was face to face with a buffalo bull but a little one this time - Charlie, their pet acquired to be a model for one of Veryl's most important pieces of sculpture, "Back From the Brink."
During the next few years Roger and Veryl kept friends up to date on Charlie through emails and mailings. But only a few friends knew of the drama unfolding on the Brooks/Goodnight ranch.
"Buffalo in the House" is the story with as many sharp, steep turns as a narrow road down a mountain.
In the early months Roger and Charlie bonded. Not with Elmer's glue, but epoxy.
It doesn't give much of the story away to tell potential readers that when Charlie was moved to a buffalo ranch at 400 pounds, the little bull did not bond with other buffalo there. So back Charlie came to the Brooks/Goodnight ranch.
I knew of Roger's and Veryl's love of animals. What I didn't know was the extent of their love of animals, especially Charlie, was so deep and totally committed.
In a very small way this gripping story reminds me of my last dog, a former county pound mutt.
He was friendly and gentle unless his instincts gave a sense someone might be threatening to "his boy," my youngest son, or my former wife and me.
She read where the maximum number of words a dog could learn was around 30. We figured our mutt knew twice that number.
The mutt became sick and his illness tested both the limits of our love as well as finances.
Most Amercans will never see a real buffalo. But you can get to know one in "Buffalo in the House."

I never expected to be so touched by a book about a buffalo. A poignant story about a person's relationship with a buffalo, along with historical facts about the plight of the buffalo. Great idea!

As a nature center that teaches classes for kids and adults, we are always on the look out for inexpensive but fun and educational crafts to demonstrate certain principles or ideas. This book, which is a collection of the best from the series, manages to meet both criteria. It uses common household items and does a wonderful job of illustrating lots of different basic facts through craft projects. I also like that the illustrations in the book are about what you'd expect from a kid creator.

5 out of 5 stars If you love animals, you'll love this book!.......2005-01-30

What animal lover wouldn't like to hear true stories from Paul McCartney, Anita Roddick, and Maneka Gandhi? This is a must-read for anyone who appreciates the roles of animals in our lives. Or to quote Jane Goodall:

"...this collection of inspiring tales is so important. They are true tales about individuals who have dared to take positive action against cruelty to animals and won, individuals who have made a difference."

When you've read this book, you'll be inspired to make a difference yourself. Don't miss this opportunity!

3 out of 5 stars Does have some good stories, but it's slow to start..........2003-08-18

On the whole, Speaking Out for Animals by Kim Stallwood is written in a hopeful and progressive style - certainly it's worth a read. But as I read the heartwarming stories, I definitely felt mixed emotions. On the one hand, it is good to hear happy endings. On the other hand, it is terrible to think that humans could be responsible for so much suffering and cruelty.

This book's greatest fault, in my opinion, is the first 24 pages. I found myself nearly in despair, thinking 209 more pages, what if it's all like this! Fortunately, it is not all that bad. After I got through the relatively short and somewhat dull interviews, I finally reached something good. The interview with Sergeant Sherry Schlueter was just the first of a series of ten interesting and varied stories. I especially enjoyed reading how animal rights are viewed abroad, in the interviews with Maneka Gandhi of India and Tatyana Pavlova in Russia.

To often, it seems, I hear terrible stories of animal suffering. All this bad news can become quite overwhelming. That's why I like section two of this book, all 31 of these stories are strictly happy endings. From Ginny, the dog who rescues cats to Butch and Sundance, two runaway meat pigs, this section will leave you feeling good.

Section three is titled "Unsung Heroes," and I also found it to be interesting and inspiring. Tony and Vicki Moore who fought against Spain's blood fiestas, the Buffalo Field Campaign fighting for the wild buffalo and eight-year-old Amanda Walker-Serrano, alerting others to the truth about circuses. These three stories are among 21 true tales of animal heroes. --Reviewed by Starlynn Clarke

1 out of 5 stars I agree with Mr. Strumboldt.......2002-07-26

I feel that, while their intentions are good, many of the people in this book have views so extreme that they defy common sense. I found Peter Singer's views on human-animal relations disturbing and troubling to say the least. Also, while I agree that animals are treated terribly here and all over the world, these people have no scientific basis upon which to state their views. They seem to rely on the hearsay of others who share their views. While I was reading this, it seemed to me that the entire book had been written for the purposes of fund-raising. Overall, the people described in this book, all taken together, seem to have developed a very detailed philosophical approach to the cause of animal rights. It's too bad that they don't do a better job of implementing it. There were numerous factual errors I found in this book. Whoever edited it doesn't seem to have done a very thorough job of fact checking or proof reading.

4 out of 5 stars 'Speaking Out For Animals inspires with success stories".......2002-04-11

I think Mark S. missed the point of this book. Showing abuse cases of a wide variety with happy endings not only exposes the abuse but shows there can be a favorable outcome. Too often, we are overwhelmed with the depth of animal abuse issues. This uplifting book shows the wisdom of movement leaders along with courageous stories of ordinary people making a difference in animal lives. I bought a copy for my parents who read it cover to cover and have a better understanding of the animal issues I am fighting for. Is it just a coincidence that they now are doing volunteer work at a shelter in their area?

1 out of 5 stars Not recommended.......2002-03-16

As a long-time animal rights activist, I can say that this collection of self-righteous interviews and melodramatic anecdotes adds little to the literature on the subject. A more serious discussion of animal rights advocacy would focus less on celebrity banter and mawkish rhetoric, and more on the entrenched cultural attitudes and public policies that perpetuate, and subsidize, the victimization of animals. This book is about people, self-important people, not animals. Sadly, I expected more, especially from such a reputable source.

This book should be read along with viewing the PBS show by the same name "Tall Blondes". Both complement the other very well. The author speaks of a subject that she obviously has a passion for and that feeling comes through in the book as well as the documentary. Recommended reading/viewing for everyone - not just those Tall Blondes in the world.

4 out of 5 stars This book is a hoot!.......2001-04-29

As a Clinical Massage Therapist (for both humans and non), and the only captive/agressive (animal) TTouch practitioner in my state, I do a lot of volunteer work at my local Zoological park. I'm never quite sure what I'll be working on when I go out, so I like to pick up info on various animals when I can and just read ahead. When I placed my order, I was looking for a little more scientific data, but even without the clinical research I was most pleased with what showed up at my door!

Ms. Sherr's sincere passion for the creature is evident on every page, and the book itself is simply a pleasure to hold and read. It has a nicely designed slick cover and the binding is top-notch. This book will last for ages if taken care of, but as appealing as the images have been to my daugher, I have to keep a close eye on it.

There are interesting facts, and some fiction is dispelled. There's tons of history and beautiful pix on every page.

No, the book is not the end-all be-all of information, but it is well worth the price, and there are even a few used ones for sale above (though not mine. . . you can't have it. . . just back awaaaaay from the book.)

I highly recommend this book for anyone with a passing interest or even a non-veterinary passion for the animal!

1 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment.......2001-03-10

I was looking for a scientific book about giraffes and at the time this was all I could find so I purchased it. The book contains wonderful pictures otherwise I would give it zero stars. The book has almost no scientific information and is filled with a lot of irrelevant and dull quotes about giraffes (made by historical figures) , along with other cutesy stuff. AND I still have not found a current scientific/field study type book about giraffes!! This book might be good to read to the kids.

Guerrero translates her many years of experience working closely with animals into this splendid handbook, where scores of fascinating and often moving animal anecdotes are applied to seven levels of human spiritual development. This wise and valuable book reminds us that animals are the often-overlooked but very powerful guides to our own spirituality." Cait Johnson, author of Earth, Water, Fire, and Air: Essential Ways of Connecting to Spirit.

" What Animals Can Teach Us About Spirituality will reveal more than that. It provides insights into the self and strengthens your spirituality whether animals are part of your life or not. And if you are an animal lover, it reinforces the bonds you already enjoy with animals, domestic and wild." Rita Robinson, co-author of Exploring Native American Wisdom.

5 out of 5 stars Moving and inspiring.......2007-07-23

This book truly touched me! I'm a real softy when it comes to animals, but until I read this book I had not thought of them as "teachers".

A professional animal trainer, Diana L. Guerrero shares how she has learned as much from the animals as they have learned from her. In many ways, animals are far more noble than humans, and Guerrero illustrates this point time and again.

Read. Learn. And most importantly: Enjoy!!

4 out of 5 stars How animals can heighten our spiritual awareness.......2005-01-07

Diana Guerror brings us a lovely introduction to many of the ways in which animals can heighten our awareness of our own caring, moral, healing and spiritual qualities. She illustrates these through specific animal examples:

        Loyalty - dogs
        Playfulness - otters
        Power - bears
        Heart - lions
        Survival - wolves
        Vision - eagles
        Mind - dolphins
        Wisdom - owls

This book is a good invitation to reflections on how we can be more mindful of many of these qualities in our lives, and how we can extend our investments in healing - ourselves and others - beyond our own species. It can serve as a good introduction to spiritual dimensions as well, particularly for those who might not be open yet to the broader dimensions of psychic animal and spirit communications.

5 out of 5 stars A Warm and Wonderful Read.......2004-01-31

A beautifully written glimpse into the psyche of both humans and animals. As a writer I enjoyed Ms Guerrero's descriptions of her personal interactions with both tame and wild animals and felt very much a part of her adventures. Prior to reading Diana's book I thought I knew my buddy, a 100lb Akita, very well. Now I not only notice my dog's subtle clues but have a greater understanding of their meaning. This is a "must read" for all lovers of the spiritual messages of nature.

5 out of 5 stars Learn From the Animals..........2004-01-17

Don't think that Diana Guerrero advocates a new spiritual fad in advocating that we humans emulate animals. Aesop knew you can't be a human in dog's clothing. Guerrero asks us to stop, turn off the computer, TV, cell phone, and most of all our mental noise, and get attuned to the fundamentals through our animal teachers. She strikes the right balance between addressing humans' shortcomings and addressing the positive and negative qualities of animals. Authoritative, with intelligent discourse on nature, zoology, animal and human behavior, and religious teachings, this book is a great addition to your library as you search for higher meaning.

        5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful adventure.......2003-12-23

Diana's book is a gift to all of us who are not as animal savvy as we should be. This book came to me just as I aquired a new little kitten. This isn't a book on animal "How To's", but rather a journey to understanding animal behavior. I found it to be an inspiration to me with respect to raising and understanding my kitten. This book is well thought out and very well written. Thank you Diana. Kathy London
