Book Description
Linda Allen has spent more than 35 years in the equestrian industry, training, riding, jumping, competing, and designing courses. In 101 JUMPING EXERCISES FOR HORSE & RIDER, she provides a logical and consistent series of exercises presented in a fun and appealing way, with clear arena maps and straightforward instructions. For each exercise, Linda covers set-up; how to ride the exercise; steps to make the exercise more difficult; what every successful rider should keep in mind while working; when to move on to the next step; and the benefits of the exercise.
This must-have workbook, a sequel to the successful "read-and-ride" 101 Arena Exercises and 101 Horsemanship & Equitation Patterns, stresses safety, skill building, and success for riders of all ages and levels of experience, whether their interest is in show jumping, eventing, hunters, equitation, or just plain having fun with their horses. Designed in the same user-friendly format as the previous books, with a lay-flat comb binding, the book can be hung on the barn wall or draped over a jump standard in the training area so the reader/rider can refer to it from the saddle.

great jumping ideas.......2007-08-07
This book has so much info on different exercises and each exercises has little hits about when to use this exercise and what to watch out for while riding it.
Evolution of jumping skills........2007-05-13
This book breaks the demands or jumping down into a logical progression of skills until it takes the insecure beginning rider into a confident partner to the jumping horse. If these lessons are followed correctly, it can also take a training level horse into a skilled show jumper. This book is a must for anyone interested int he discipline of jumping.
Great Jumping book for beginners .......2006-08-19
This book creates a great foundation to train yourself and your horse to excell in jumping no matter what your intentions may be. I personally would recomend this book for all ages and engligh riders even the one's with no intention on jumping.
A Great Book To Keep In Your Tack Room!.......2006-01-14
I have started to do some of these exercises with my Appaloosa gelding. He is ten, but has gone western the two years he has been trained and is very ignorant of english riding skills.
I have been doing these exercises with him, and it really worked! He is now on his way to being a confident jumper. It was pretty easy, too. We set up the cavaletti and cross-rail grids, and followed the patterns described. I am now proud to say I have a hunter in training. This book is highly reccomended to everyone; whether your horse is a confident jumper, or just learning, 101 Jumping Exercises For Horse And Rider is a great source to jumping exercises!
101 Jumping Exercises for Horse & Rider .......2005-08-02
I bought the book originally to add some variety to my training sessions and to obtain ideas on different exercises. Now both my trainer and I do not jump without the book close by. The different grid exercises have added so much to our workouts! Not only has it helped our horses become more confident it has helped our equitation tremendously. I would highly recommend this book for both beginers and the more experienced rider!

a must have for any horse owner.......2007-10-07
No book is a subsitute for a licensed veterinarian. Now having said that...
I've had this book for years and wouldn't be without it. It got me through my first foaling and also caring for that foal (including vaccinations). While I've not read this book front to back, the signs & symptoms section in the front is invaluable. The chapters are easy to read, yet they are informative and allow you to ask intelligent questions of your veterinarian when it becomes necessary for them to be there.
My mother recently bought her first horse and this book was the first thing I told her to go get.
Should be on every horse owner's bookshelf!.......2007-07-19
This is a well-organized, easy to undertand book for all horse owners. When I saw the size, I was daunted, but have found it to be helpful in understanding and tending to health issues with our horses. This should be on every horse owners bookshelf!
Good reference book if you own a horse(s).......2007-01-12
This book is a good reference book if you own a horse(s). It is easy to read and covers a wide variety of condition and diseases.
WOW.......2006-11-24
This book is awesome. I knew nothing about my horse but now I just go to the part of the body with the problem like leg and then read all about all of the leg issues and I can determine somewhat what i think she has and call the vet if I need to. Sometimes it is just a minor thing and the book tells you how to solve it in simple ways. I think everyone should have one of these and I love mine. I was calling the vet everyday and now I can treat her myself and call only when I have to!!
A Must Have For Every Horse Owner.......2006-09-06
This Handbook is quick and easy to use. Packed with symptoms, diagnosis, and treatments, its index and contents help horse owners to quickly locate information when its needed most. Although the book only has black and white photos, they clearly demonstrate how tos, anatomy, and display common physically symptoms. The book also has charts and diagrams on every day equine topics such as worms and necessary vaccines. The last few chapters are designated to reproduction and are equipped with useful information for an owner thinking about breeding.
This is required reading for every horse owner. It helps determine whether or not you need to call the vet out for a medical problem.

Clinton Anderson.......2007-10-06
Very thourough step by step book on how to get control and respect of a young or old horse. Great illustrations and easy to read format.
Great information for training horses.......2007-06-27
I have four horses and one of them has some attitude problems. I would have liked to purchase Clinton Anderson's videos, but they're pretty expensive, so I bought this book. It's great and has given me many good ideas for working with my problem horse. It's principles, of course, apply to any horse and this book is a great read for any horse owner.
This book deserves 10 stars.......2007-06-26
This book is so well written, easy to use, easy to understand and easy to follow. The exercises are clear and thoroughly expained with pictures that show the correct technique. There are descriptions of what the horse may try to avoid the exercise as well as what humans may do wrong when performing the exercises; solutions are included on how to fix these problems. This book was well thought out, both in terms of how to train your horse and how to train the rider. My problem horse (a biter with an attitude and an attention span of about 5 nanoseconds) is responding excellently to this program. I purchased Pat Parelli's book and gave up on the book after trying the 1st few exercises (my horse kept trying to bite me). I am thrilled with Clinton's book and am finally enjoying the companionship of my horse. I wish I had done this sooner.
It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This.......2007-06-02
After the Lyons and Parelli prototypes in the world of horse-whispering, along comes Clinton Anderson whose amazing talent intrigues me. I've owned, bred, raised, and trained horses for 64 years and this young man has a lot to teach anyone. I can certainly recommend either his books, seminars, DVDs or all of the above.
Excellent book for ground manners.......2007-06-01
There are wonderful, easy to follow, step-by-step instructions for every excercise in this book. I really love the personal remarks made by the two 'students' who were chosen to be a part of this project. Highly recommend!

Listen to and communicate with your horse-successfully
"This is a book for everyone who has ever looked at the constantly increasing list of methods and systems marketed as `horsemanship' and wondered which of the many possible approaches would be most suitable for a particular behavior problem. And she comes up with creative solutions that weave together traditional horse handling with the best of modern horse training, including my own personal favorite, clicker training."
-Alexandra Kurland, author of Clicker Training for Your Horse and The Click That Teaches video lesson series

Customer Reviews:
Equine enthusiast.......2007-07-16
Very good reference book. Author presents from the horse's point of view which is how the title reads. As usual, however, the one problem that my hose developed is missing. But that may be expected since horses don't often read.
A Must-Have for All Horse Owners.......2007-04-12
Whether you're a beginning horse trainer or more advanced, and no matter what kind of training you are into, this important reference guide will teach you to communicate with your horse.
Excellent book !!.......2007-03-06
Gincy has provided a wonderful resource for all horse owners whether beginners or seasoned experts. No matter what discipline you are involved with, this book will become a favourite. It applies to horses beginning their education as well as seasoned competitors, ridden or driven, and just much loved family pets.
The basis for all relationships with our horses is communication. Gincy explains clearly how to read what your horse is saying to you and how to clearly communicate your instructions to him.
This book, like Gincy's others, is full of Gincy's very perceptive insights into equine behavior and motivation. At the same time, she generously cites highlights from the work of other successful trainers and instructors. She totally understands and loves her subject. She isolates each 'problem' or unwanted behavior, explains what it means and not only tells us how to change it but also what not to do.
For the beginner, this book provides a ready reference to cover hundreds of situations that arise in our day to day association with our horse or pony. For the experienced horse person, it is a compendium of knowledge that is so far unequaled in training literature.
Aside from all that, it is an entertaining read.

Good, if a little boring..........2007-06-07
I'll admit that I have sort of been of two minds on The Red Pony.
You see, I was often pretty bored reading it. Not quite all of it, I guess. There were some really striking moments, such as the startling image at ending of the opening story and the gentle humor of the final story. But for long stretches, the storytelling was dry and predictable. It was a short book, so such long stretches were a bit of a problem. I can see why so many high school students have considered this a tedious read over the years.
My first impression of The Red Pony, however, wasn't the end of my reading experience. I finished the book one night, and during the next couple of days, I was driving alone for long stretches. And the book really stuck with me. Evidently, it hadn't been boring enough for me to forget it. As I reflected back on the stories, I was struck by the subtle wisdom of the book. How many books so well depict the longings and fears and frustrations of childhood? And, of course, it's not just about childhood. It works as a meaningful adult fable about how to live this strange existence when we're vaguely aware of our approaching deaths and don't know quite what to do until we get there. What does it mean to live lives in which dignity and meaning and hope are present? The Red Pony, it seems to me, takes some steps toward answering those questions.
So, ultimately, I do find it to be a worthwhile book, even though I doubt I'll be reading it again any time soon. It's not Steinbeck's finest; he was still working things out. But I'm glad I read it.

The Red Pony
By John Steinbeck
In The Red Pony by John Steinbeck, a boy named Jody is raised on a
ranch in California. Jody is really good at ranching. But nothing will
prepare him for this connection with Gabilan. Jody tends and trains his
horse every day so he can ride Gabilan someday, but when Gabilan falls
ill, Jody figures out there is a lot more he had to do with his horse
than what he had been doing. This book is not recommended, because there
is no real action in the book. An opinion of the book is that the author
needs to add more action to the book, like Jody meets someone and they
push him around and he has to go to the emergency room because the bad
friends hurt him. The only good part some people liked was that Jody
tried to jump in the middle of his shadow with every step, and the people
liked it because it looked fun and the other part I liked was that
Gabilan dies and Jody is going through a really rough time. Jody has to
try to deal with the fact that Gabilan died
Oh, John Steinbeck, why?.......2007-04-11
John Steinbeck is one of my favorite authors. I love Of Mice And Men, East of Eden, and The Grapes Of Wrath. But this 4-part story of a a boy and a horse (which isn't even about the horse that much) is pointless drivel. I'll admit, I liked the first part of it, which is great and good enough to warrant two stars. The rest of it feels disjointed. I couldn't wait to get done with it.
It isn't a terrible book, but it isn't good at all. It's below average, and below average is not what I expect from the writer of Of Mice And Men.
From the sadness of death springs hope and purpose in life.......2007-04-04
John Steinbeck's The Red Pony is a deceptively simple "young reader's" book that blossoms into full life meaning when examined as an artfully presented novella. The brief 100-page work reads like a four-paneled painting which, viewed from the proper perspective, should be appreciated for what it truly is--a remarkable rendition of realism in 20th century American literature.
What to expect from the book: Expect four loosely connected short stories or vignettes, not a tightly woven epic plot. Expect crisp, articulate prose, without the extravagant detail, depth of characterization and flowing drama afforded by a longer work. Expect to experience thought-provoking, coming-of-age events in a young Salinas ranch boy's life, not the entertaining action of a Hollywood thriller. Also, expect to have to dig a little to understand the author's message, not to be spoonfed the theme of this unique work.
Here's my view of the thematic "glue" holding the individual stories together:
1. Boy learns about death: In "The Gift," 10-year old Jody learns through the sudden sickness, suffering and gruesome, buzzard-pecked death of his beloved red pony, Gabilan, that even "happy" gifts can result in sadness and loss, despite the best efforts of well-intentioned adults.
2. Boy views consequences of the ways of man: In "The Great Mountains," Jody sees how compassion has its economic and cultural limitations, when father refuses to honor the old paisano, Gitano's, request to live out his remaining years on the ranch where he was born. Consequence: Gitano disappears into the lonesome mountains towards the west, riding father's decrepit horse and ominously carrying only a sharp-bladed rapier.
3. Through loss comes hope: Against a gloomy backdrop of loss, "The Promise" builds hope but culminates in the harsh choice between life of birthing mare and her breech-positioned colt. The bittersweet outcome, death of the mare to save her colt, is difficult to accept but does offer at least a glimmer of optimism.
4. Despite life's trials and tribulations, its fullness arises from having a sense of purpose: The final story, "The Leader of the People," mentions neither the loss of Jody's red pony nor his presumed raising of the newborn colt. Instead, the connection to the other stories and unifying message of the novella can be found, in my opinion, within the final, almost trivial event: "Grandfather was about to refuse, and then he saw Jody's face," which led him to accept Jody's offer to make him a glass of lemonade. Importantly, through the simple act of accepting Jody's offer, Grandfather nourishes the boy's sense of purpose. Although Grandfather's own life purpose has withered since that unforgettable year decades ago when he led a group of settlers out west, the boy's life lies ahead with plenty of potential for a purposeful future.
In sum, out of death, and love, springs life's potential: When life has a purpose, however big or small--from caring for a pony to returning to one's birthplace to die, from being a leader of the people to making lemonade for a loved one--we not only live but thrive. The Red Pony is a sensitive affirmation of life--recommended reading for anyone willing to experience a little darkness before seeing light.
A Great Fill.......2007-02-14
Once again I am amazed that I completely missed out on the beauty of John Steinbeck's writing during my school years. How could my curriculum have bypassed an author with an incredible ability to draw his reader into stories with such fluidity and ease?
The Red Pony is a short novel broken into four parts centering on a young boy named Jody. Each part could be a stand alone short story, but collectively they tell the struggle of a boy maturing into adulthood on a farm in California during the Depression. On the surface the Red Pony is an example of one boys move from adolescence towards adulthood. Underneath, however, is Steinbeck's further examination of man's sense of belonging and purpose in the world. The depth and vastness of the world is dependent upon each character's understanding and his purpose in it.
It is Steinbeck's descriptions of nature that adds such a rich dimension to this story by having the characters views of the farm, mountains, animals....change with the mood of the story. I was absolutely lost in the beautiful descriptions of the farm and countryside that made up Carl and Billy Buck's world, and felt Jody's desire to expand that horizon into the mountains and beyond.
There seemed to be so much going on for such a short story that I felt full after reading it.

Customer Reviews:
Hands down, the best foaling attendant book.......2007-07-22
As far as I'm concerned, this book is required reading for all foaling attendants. Thank you Dr. Karen Hayes for writing it. The book covers a single topic, and does it better than any of the other foaling guides I've read (and I've read quite a few). Those other foaling guides are on a bookshelf; this is the book that goes in the foaling kit! It has saved our farm from disaster on more than one occasion. Dr. Hayes clearly, calmly and concisely communicates the important facts and techniques the foaling attendant needs to know. The detailed diagrams make all the difference in illuminating exactly what is going on at each stage of parturition. Detailed descriptions of what's normal and what's not, techniques for resolving problems before they become critical, and advice on what to attempt yourself and when to call the vet are invaluable. You will find other fine books about breeding, mare care and foal care, but this is the best book on the actual process of protecting and caring for your mare when it's time to deliver her foal. Dr. Hayes' more general horse care [...].is also highly recommended.
Good information, but..........2007-05-15
I would like to have more information regarding what to do next. The information was good, and the illustrations are helpful, but I needed to buy another book to help with what to do with the foal once it had arrived.
Great Book....Answered lots of questions.......2007-03-26
This book was shipped quickly and just in time....I had about 5 reading days before my first foal was born. I highly recommend this book to all breeders.
The Complete Book Of Foaling.......2007-02-11
Very informative book~! I have been foaling out mares for over 12 years and I learned quite a bit of information that I did not already realize~! An A+ book to have on hand~!
A gift for my Father.......2007-02-08
My Father liked the book very much. Could not stop reading it. He is buying a copy for my brother who actually does the foaling at the horse farm.
Book Description
Ask someone who works with horses how best to communicate with a balky colt and she will tell you that horses do not respond to human cajoling. To be successful the human must understand and work with, not against, the horse’s instincts, needs, and fears. When a trainer resorts to human teaching methods — reasoning, begging, bribing, even hugging and kissing — the horse will become confused and unable to respond appropriately. But if horses are treated respectfully with methods they understand, everyone involved — animal and human — will be happier, safer, and more productive.
Horse trainer and instructor Cherry Hill believes that every human/horse relationship benefits from a greater human understanding of what motivates horses, how they experience the world, what makes them happy, and what worries them. Journey through the equine mind with Hill as she explores all that makes a horse tick. How do his basic needs dictate his behavior and mood? What touches and tastes appeal to his senses? How does his “flight or fight” instinct dictate his response to sudden movements?
Hill offers interactive experiments — fun for both horse and human — that bear out her findings on horse behavior. And her final chapter presents simple training methods that draw from the insights and information presented throughout the book.

Winifred's View.......2007-09-28
I have purchased many books on horses and riding, but Cherry Hill's "..Think Like a Horse" explained and reinforced so much more about what I was questioning and experiencing with my horse. It is certainly a wonderful resourse for "newbies" like myself who have discovered the wonders of horse at a late age, but I believe it also holds a lot of insights for the more experienced riders/owners who care about knowing their horses at least as well as they ride/show them. I was looking for something to explain a particular change in my horse's behavior (after eye exams, blood work etc turned up negative) and I believe I found it in Ms. Hill's book. Winnie and I thank her for sharing her knowledge and wisdom in a book packed with information.
If I were a horse.......2007-09-20
If I were a horse, I would want this author to be my "keeper." This book is written with keen insight and clearly communicated to anyone who owns a horse, rides a horse or has dreamed of galloping across a great meadow as free as the wind. I highly recommend this book along with another book that embraces horses: It's called On the Trail of the Pony Express and the book follows Cherokee author, Jerry Ellis, for 2,000 miles along the Pony Express Trail by foot, horse, covered wagon and canoe from Missouri to California.
Wonderful book!.......2007-07-15
This is a delightful book full of information and insight from an often under-appreciated trainer. Cherry Hill covers everything from development to grooming to behavior to training.
Information which is normally strewn across several horse books comes together in this single volume. This is a must-read for every horse enthusiast.

USPC Manual - Beginning Level.......2006-06-27
I am a beginning & intermediate horseback riding instructor in Moscow, ID. I have found the Pony Club Manual for beginners to be a very helpful teaching tool - the illustrations are helpful and well-labeled, and the layout is easy to follow. The information is widely accepted as correct, and the text is well-written for the 10-15 year old ages. I include a manual in the price of all my beginning horse camps for 10-14 year olds.
Pony Club Manual.......2006-03-21
This is the an excellent introduction for anyone interested in horsemanship. It can be studied prior to joining the United States Pony Club or serve as a usful tool in teaching or improving horsemanship for the young or beginning equestrian.
A Must Have For Pony Club Quiz Bowl.......2006-03-16
I couldn't have gotten through Pony Club Quiz Bowl if I didn't have this book. I like the exercises in the book and now I do them on my horse. I learned alot while reading this book, like parts of the tack and how to be safe around horses. I like all the pictures in the book because it helped me to understand what it meant. I would reccommend this book to other pony clubbers and kids who like to ride.
Susan Harris- Multitalented Communicator.......2004-01-23
There is a saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. Susan Harris is not only a gifted artist ; drawing her explanations of concepts she is relating ; she draws pictures with her words, and for anyone lucky enough to attend one of her clinics , she draws explanations with body language. I am fortunate to have Sue as my friend and mentor for 30+ years & have told her often that "She could read the phone book to you & You'd never lose interest". She is also a gifted horsewoman & teacher. She posseses an ability to locate the crux of a lack of understanding & with empathy for both horse & rider guides them to a solution. If I had to limit my horse library to just a few books, her USPC manuels would be the first chosen. They are a wealth of information on all aspects of horsemanship , for every level of horseman , of any age. Her choice of words combined with her own illustrations gives very clear & interesting information.Sue stresses empathy for your horse & safety issues in every topic -2 basics to have ingrained in anyone who wishes to be around horses. I have recommended these books to all who share the "addiction" to horses with me.
very good book to start with.......2004-01-16
I advise anyone young who is seriously interested in horses to start with this book. I've been riding all my life and think this is a great book to start with and it is very informative.

Good book for the beginner.......2007-09-20
This book provides a lot of basic information on horse care. It is a must have for the new horse owner or someone taking up the sport. I was hoping for a little more information on feeding, but overall it was a good buy.

Book Description
Effective management requires knowledge, dedication, and a sincere interest in the well-being of horses. In this thoroughly updated second edition of her best-selling classic, Cherry Hill explains how to be a responsible steward of the land while providing horses with the best care possible. Drawing on decades of personal experience and recommendations from hands-on Extension agents throughout North America, Hill provides detailed, practical information designed to help readers develop and refine their “horsekeeping consciousness.”
A thorough understanding of horses is critical to good horsekeeping, so Hill begins by explaining the behavior and the physical and emotional needs of the horse. She encourages readers to choose a management method that fits their lifestyle and locale. She then explains how to maximize efficiency through careful planning of facilities and implementation of diligent management routines that keep horses happy, healthy, and safe.
Well organized and generously illustrated with color photographs and instructive plan drawings,
Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage is packed with information that horse owners need. Acreage selection, layout design, and checklists for daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal management routines are just a few of the essential topics covered in this invaluable reference.
Since it was first published in 1991,
Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage has sold more than 160,000 copies. This new edition is full-color and has been thoroughly redesigned, revised, expanded, and updated.

Excellent planning guide.......2007-06-27
This book is a great resource for those wishing to build an equine facility - on any scale. However, this is not a guide book for horse ownership. If you board your horse somewhere, you do not need this book. If you are shopping for land and want to build your own horse place, then this book is perfect. If you are trying to figure out if your set up is safe and good for your horses, then get this book. If you are dedicated to making the best out of your land and your horse, then this book is the perfect resource, and it will help you decide if your land is right for horses or if horses are right for your land. Appropriate land use is important, and Cherry Hill shows how to incorporate horses into your land management practices - or is it incorporating good land management practices into your horsey haven? Her ideas and standards for barn design are also good industry standards. I highly recomend this book for architects and land planners who design equestrian homes/communities/barns.
\I like it.......2007-02-23

Horsekeeping on Small Acreage.......2007-02-20
Excellent book for all. I am particularly pleased with the practical information available to the fairly inexperienced. I have a very good picture of how to layout and set up my facility based on my needs and future plans for my horses. I would recommend this particularly to those who are starting from scratch with setting up their barn/stable.
Helpful Book.......2007-01-06
We have referred to this book numerous times while constructing our small horse barn. We've found it extremely helpful in many ways.
Equine enthusiast.......2007-01-04
This book is well written and easy to read. The writer very clearly states that she geared her book for the 'perfect' set-up. Unfortunately, that rarely occurs and those of us who have less than perfect begin to ask whether we should have horses at all - not a fair position. There are many of us who board and will never be able to obtain a 60x100 pipe corral or three feedings a day which the author recommends.
Not all of us deal with blizzards, drifting or falling snow, water troughs frozen over, etc. So, the reader may end up ignoring large sections of the text no matter how useful.
As a resource for setting up a horse property, the book has something to offer, however, not as much as I had hoped.
