Great Idea Resource.......2007-02-26
I bought this book and looked through it with post its to label all the interesting teapot ideas I was drawn to. When considering this book, I wasn't particularly drawn to the cover teapot and wondered if I would be disappointed in the authors picks, but I wasn't. This is a great visual resource for my classroom and studio.
As someone else has commented, I would have given this book 5 stars if the author hadn't repeated multiple photos of very similar teapots by the same artist.
teapots galore.......2006-11-13
A beautiful book on contemporary approaches to a traditional vessel.I am not into funtion as I am into form, but what a book! I am glad I bought it.Sometimes,I found that despite my aversion to making utilitarian things, there is so much I do derive from the pictures that I can adapt the notion of form and function to a sculptural work, independent of the notion of tea pot.
art teacher.......2006-11-10
As a ceramics teacher who teaches her students how to build teapots, this book is a wonderful resource. The pictures are great and it helps give students a better understanding of what a teapot can look like.
I'm not a little teapot..........2005-08-20
But if I were a little teapot, I'd be one of the beautiful ones in this book. There are teapots both plain, and beyond description to fascinate, amuse and amaze you. If you know a little about firing ceramics, and glaze technology, the information provided will deepen your appreciation of each teapot. You may find that some of these artists are in your area, and have ceramics for sale. Or if you just like teapots, there enough teapots here in beautiful color photos to sate your appetite.
Beautiful and Imaginative.......2004-03-12
500 TEAPPOTS is an wonderful book and is sure to inspire both potters and tea drinkers alike. It is a wonderful companion to 500 BOWLS. I hope they publish ANOTHER 500 TEAPOTS (BOWLS, too).

Novelty Teapot Collecting.......2002-10-14
A comprehensive, informative book. Excellent illustrations, well organized. Interesting for the non-collector and a good resource for the collector as well.
Book Description
A teapot is one of the most important ceramic forms; the ability to make one is a key test of a potter's skill. Its construction requires the mastery of many techniques, whether the piece is thrown or handbuilt. From clay forming to aesthetics, function to design, and practicality to ergonomics, the exercise of building a teapot poses a broad range of challenges for the artist. However, the very limitations of the form are what allow for immense creativity and innovation.
This richly illustrated volume discusses the theory and design of the teapot as well as the numerous techniques for construction. For the beginning potter and the experienced teapot builder alike, The Teapot Book provides a useful step-by-step guide through the entire process of building a teapot, including materials, handle and spout placement, and kiln temperatures. The myriad illustrations also provide fodder for artists in need of new inspirations. There is a section devoted to contemporary potters and their galleries of teapots that will appeal to armchair enthusiasts, devoted collectors, and masters of the form.
From the history of teapots to theories of their construction, from suggestions for their firing to instructions for making a proper pot of tea (warm your pot first!), The Teapot Book contains all the components that today's potters need to tackle this critical piece of their artistic development. This invaluable reference will be of interest to collectors and artists, and its lavish production will tempt beginning potters to approach this rite of passage for ceramicists.

teapots!!.......2006-07-04
Having only just received the teapot book and scanning it I definitely like what I see. It looks to me like there is some very nicely laid out step by step explanations for making different forms and great tips on putting the infamous teapot together. Cheers, Cheryl
Great book!.......2006-03-24
I have been doing ceramics for five years, and specialize in teapots. This book has helped me immensely, including design and techniques. I highly recommend it.
Teapot Book excels.......2006-03-13
As a potter who make lots of teapots, I bought The Teapot Book and read it with great interest. The tips, illustrations and photos are a great help to me in improving the skills needed to make teapots. This book should be an inspiration to any potter aspiring to make excellent teapots. It will also be of interest to all potters and collectors as well. The book has diagrams, and beautiful full color photos of a teapot being assembled. There are contributions of glazes and tips by various European and American potters. The photo gallery of teapots and short anecdotes about the teapot and potter exhibits a cross sections of many styles of teapots from handmade to thrown. A very well written book.
Book Description
Imagine making serving dishes perfectly suited to the food you're preparing--perhaps a cone-shaped bowl on a pedestal, filled with shrimp and corn, with the husks shooting up gracefully. What an impression this would make on your guests...and what a pleasure for your family to sit down to such a beautifully prepared table. With clay, and guidance by a best-selling author who's a real pro at ceramics, it's simple to hand-build stylish, customized tableware that's just like the pieces you covet in pricey galleries. Even beginners will easily follow the illustrated instructions for making slabs, extruding, molding, and more. Every seasonally themed project showcases a complete table setting, with a delicious extra in each--a teapot in one, a pitcher in another--and features a new technique to try out. For more creative inspiration, four top potters share detailed expertise in the special section on surface decoration: they'll reveal the reasons behind their stylistic choices and walk you through the entire process. And, if you're a "rebel" who likes to do it your own way, the book is simply packed with options for adapting and substituting!

Great resource for potters.......2007-08-06
This a a great resource for the functional potter or ceramic artists. Full of images and inspiration, as well as detailed inspructions of many items. A must have.
Handbuilt pottery book.......2007-01-12
Good pottery book for hand building. Some interesting and workable ideas.
Sparked new ideas for my own work.......2004-08-02
The technical information in this book is excellent: well presented, illustrated and explained. While I agree with the other reviewer that most of the actual projects shown are not fitting with my taste, the ideas and techniques presented have proven helpful to me. I also found myself wishing that the cover art was included in the how-to projects (which it is not). My only other criticism is that darting is not covered, but great examples of it are, so the reader never gets the explanation of how such forms are achieved.
Overall, this is one of the best technique books I've come across. I would recommend it, especially for the hobby or beginning potter. If you have a formal education in the ceramic arts you will know most of these tips already and find the suggested projects lacking in sophistication. It may however spark some new ideas for your own work.
Quirky tableware in an otherwise well-written book.......2001-06-28
I was misled by the cover of this book thinking that the tableware inside would be clean, simple and elegant. I couldn't be more wrong. I find many of the pieces featured looking weird and overly-decorated. Maybe that's what the author means by "distinctive". This is my greatest misgiving about the book. Otherwise, the author did quite a good job explaining the basics of pottery (with helpful tips along the way), guiding the reader on how to make tableware to suit the four seasons, and demonstrating the surface decoration styles of four different artists. There is a glossary at the end of the book and appendices detailing cone-firing ranges and glaze formulas.

A new spin on an old song.......2006-11-04
When my daughter picked this book up at the local library, I wondered if it was just a song book. She was into the whole teapot craze, wanting to have tea parties, singing the tea pot song, etc. What I found when we got it home, however, was a delightful surprise.
The many verses in this song take children through many different cultures on a great exploration. From China to Mexico to outer space! After checking the book out numerous times from the library, I decided to go ahead and buy it. As we'd drive along in the car during the day, I'd hear my two year-old reciting the lines to the book. At night, she would study the book from page to page trying to find the alien, who had surprise appearances throughout the book. When she sat alone, I'd watch her identify boys and girls by the color of their clothes, by the way the wore their hair, by the place she thought they might be from.
This is a very creative book with fantastic illustrations that pull you in with its lyrical flow and excellent rhyme. What a great way to broaden a child's horizons!
Fabulous for the imagination and more!!!.......2006-05-09
Both my daughter (4) and son (2) absolutely love this book. We usually sing it from start to finish and the illustations have little details which you can use as conversation points. My daughter now invents her own adventures for the teapot to add to the numerous ones in the book. The music for this is on the back page which you can either play or sing. Both my children run their fingers over the notes and sing "la la la" as they go. Great for developing an early interest in reading music!
Beautifully Illustrated and Fun to Read (or Sing!).......2006-01-23
We own 4 Iza Trapani books, and this is my favorite (the other books are The Itsy Bitsy Spider, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and Baa Baa Black Sheep, my other favorite). All of these books are just beautifully done. Ms. Trapani takes favorite nursery rhymes and turns them into entertaining stories that just beg to be sung (she even puts the music on the last page in case you don't know the tune). Her exceptional drawings really add to the fun. My 5-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter absolutely adore these books and they are short enough that I don't mind reading them every night (only Twinkle Twinkle sort of wears me out singing it). I'm a Little Teapot takes readers all over the world on an imaginative adventure, then ends up back at home among family and friends. It's a beautiful, fun-to-sing story.
Wonderful for toddlers.......2005-09-24
My 2 year old takes this book to bed with her every nap/night and I hear her singing at the top of her lungs along with the book (we've read it to her many times too). It is her absolute favorite book and has provided hours of entertainment.
A great buy for the toddler set!!
Good, not great.......2005-04-27
Judging from most of the reviews here, you'd think that this was the greatest board book ever. Well, it's certainly good, with (mostly) above-average artwork and an interestingly creative idea, but the text itself is subpar--in particular, the rhymes don't scan very well, to the point of making it difficult to read aloud in places.
That said, it's a decent book, and definitely worth considering for the price. However, you shouldn't get it thinking you're getting the world's greatest book for small children ever.
Book Description
A fitting tribute to John B. Keane, for decades Ireland’s favorite storyteller, this winning short story collection typifies the late author’s folkloric imagination and storytelling arts. These are congenial tales, too, as this literary legend views the foibles and fallibilities of Irish country folk with abundant compassion as well as a shrewd, sometimes sardonic eye. Add to that Keane’s glorious sense of fun and roguery that will make readers relish all the more how and why, in “Fred Rimble,” Jim Conlon kills the best friend he ever had. Or how Willie Ramley determines that his future wife will be “Guaranteed Pure.” Or how, to tragic as well as comic effect, a gasp, garlic, and gossip undo Denny Bruder in “The Hanging.” In all, Keane uncovers the folly in the romantic pangs, exalted aspirations, misguided mischief, and everyday shortcomings of the characters in the village of his storyteller’s mind—and beyond the folly finds their humanity.
Customer Reviews:
Enchanting.......2007-09-07
John B. Keane is my favorite literary discovery of the last 15 years. He's witty, compassionate and insightful. The stories in this volume run the gamut from heartbreaking and tragic to fully romantic and full of giggles.
Keane has a deceptively simple style that develops character without flashy turns of phrase, and reveals the secret corners of the human heart. But when he opens that door, you're astounded by what he shows you not only in the hearts of others, but in your own.
Don't miss a chance to read anything of his you can lay your hands on.

Fascinating, thrilling history lesson -- excellent.......2007-08-23
This is one of the best books I've ever read, certainly one of John Ravage's finest. It had been many years since I'd learned about the Teapot Dome Scandal -- now I could read about all the intrigue, the setting, the people involved -- and all written so that it took me there, hurled me back in time so I shared the scene, the people, the incidents all written in excellent literary style. I recommend this powerful book to every age group, whether one feels they've read about the incidents before. John Ravage's take on the time, the place, the people, plus his excellent writing ability is a major achievement.
Ravage does it again !.......2007-06-14
Jack Ravage's "Slick and the Duchess" is a great read. He knows how to take a tale, flesh it out and bring it to life. This is a story well told. The story of greed and mischief in high places certainly resonates with what is going on in Washington D.C. currently. Jack makes his characters live.
Get the book; you'll enjoy it.
A slick tale well told.......2007-06-02
Having lived in both Wyoming and Colorado I found this to be a well told tale of both places. The characters and settings are well developed to make it easy to put yourself in the story. I found that the book flowing well, and kept my interest in the storyline, making it easy to read quickly. The book is well researched and the the facts make the story more understandable with smooth transitions between the parts. I would recommend this book for readers looking for and exciting novel that is fun to get into.
Book Description
Yixing ware elevates something as simple as a teapot or cup into a work of art accessible to all collectors. Its history is rich and vigorous, offering something for just about everyone interested in pottery, tea, or Chinese culture.
Customer Reviews:
Misses the mark as a really useful introduction to Yixing.......2007-04-03
This book was not what I'd hoped for - which is a solid introduction to Yixing teapots. It concentrates on the history of Yixing teapots - and those that have been found in archaeological digs dating back to the Song Dynasty in China. Many of these ancient pots are illustrated in the book. There is some discussion on the qualities that make Yixing clay different from most other types of clay, but there is also much missing. The book doesn't illustrate examples of the differing colours available in the clay and never discusses famous clay types like Zhu Ni, which is so highly sought after by Yixing collectors.
There is a fairly large section on ancient masters of the art and those of the 19th and early 20th centuries. It's just a shame that their chops or signatures - which are usually recorded on their pots are not included in the text. Also missing is information on the modern state of the Yixing industry and the mechanical way modern pots are mostly made.
This is a rather basic and superficial look at Yixing pots and wares - but if you are after some biographical information on the most famous past masters or want to see illustrations on some very ancient Yixing pots then this book will be of interest to you.
So much and so small........2007-01-03
This is a fairly little book that is packed with solid info and great pictures. I bought one for me and a second as a gift. I may have to get a couple more for other tea fans.
