A "Must Have" for the Barbie collector........2007-10-02
Once again, Michael Augustyniak gives us another wonderfully informative book, but this time on those very hard to find Barbie dolls from the foreign markets. Michael breaks the book down by country, and those include, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Europe, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Venezuela.
As in his other books, Michael gives a picture of the doll and a close up on the face. Barbie, Ken, Skipper and Kelly, among others, are featured. The years range from 1964 to 2007 with over 350 pages and a break down of Barbie's foreign family tree and celebrity friends. With this overwhelming task of finding these obscure dolls, some lines are not complete, but this book is well worth the price for any Barbie collector.
This is a useful and fun book about Barbie dolls around the world.
Book Description
This comprehensive guide begins with the earliest Barbie dolls Mattel produced for collectors, the International (Dolls of the World) series, begun in 1980. All 39 porcelain Barbie dolls, all of the Stars 'n Stripes military dolls, all of the Happy Holidays dolls, all 64 Dolls of the World, all DOTW Princesses, all pop culture dolls like James Bond and Lord of the Rings, every national convention doll, anniversary Barbie dolls including the momentous 45th Anniversary Barbie dolls for 2004, celebrity dolls from Elvis to Diana Ross, Coca-Cola, Barbie Dolls, all Hollywood Legends dolls, Barbie Fashion Model Silkstone dolls fashions, and even Mattel direct-sales dolls like the Flowers in Fashion and Royal Jewels Collections are included. Byron Lars, Christian Dior, Nolan Miller, Armani, and Kate Spade are just a few of the designers represented. Over 850 dolls are included in this book! Most dolls are shown boxed in mint condition, along with close-up pictures of their faces so the reader can appreciate Mattel's workmanship on these fine collector dolls. 2005 values.

Barbie Doll Identification.......2006-03-20
Good resource. Would have been much better if each doll was listed by name under the category in table of contents. ie; Bob Mackie: Queen of Hearts, etc. and the page number where it can be found. Some Bob Mackies are in the porcelain section as well as designer section and would be missed if you don't know your dolls, which is why you buy the book in the first place.
Very good information book........2005-09-15
I found this book easy to use because it was well organized. I also found the prices to be on target. The pictures are great and they cover most of the collectors dolls. They also give you all the right basic information you would want to know about a doll.
The Best Guide to Barbie Doll Collectors.......2005-08-04
I have been a fan of J.Michael Augustiniak since I read his first "Encyclopedia".As a Barbie Collector who lives in a foreign country and doesn't have the same access to the informa
tions that are necessary to buy a doll, this book gives you a full view of all the types that have been made, their market values, focusing into the designers' work, the changes a Barbie
doll has been passing through and the most amuzing part:The one
of a kind dolls, which we woudn't be able to know if it wasn't for this book. Excellent for rechearch and a very accurate source for a good purchase.
A must-have!
Definitive volume for collectors.......2005-02-26
Okay, you might ask what a guy like me is doing reviewing a book on Barbie Dolls. Well, for one thing, I happened to pass down the collectible aisle in the local bookstore, which had books on collecting coins, stamps, signatures, cars, antiques, art glass, dinner plates, you name it, and on the end, was the book on Barbie Dolls, with information on prices and rarity. So I picked it up and took a look. I was surprised to see some of these dolls go for nearly $1000, but most of the dolls in this book go for $10 to $50.
Also, the Barbie Doll is probably one of the most important pop culture icons of the last 40 years. Hundreds of millions of Barbie Dolls have been sold in just about every country.
The book also had some interesting historical info. The first doll came out in 1959, and from there until 1966, there was only one head mold used, altered slightly for the Fashion Queen and Miss Barbie Dolls. From 1967 through 1976, there were four different head molds used (the original 1959 was used for Montgomery Ward, Twist n' Turn Barbie, Stacey, and Steffie Dolls).
Since 1977, however, many other molds have been used, offering more variety and ethnic diversity, including the 1981 Oriental Barbie, the 1983 Spanish Barbie, the 1991 Shani Barbie, the 1992 Mackie Neptune Fantasy Barbie (which looks like it might have been Aquaman's girlfriend or significant other, from the comic strips), and the 1999 Fantasy Goddess of Africa Barbie.
The book also contains info on prices and rarity, and other general information on each model, including clothing, accessories, face make-up, Ken dolls, and other Barbie paraphernalia.
Definitely Worth The Wait-.......2004-11-29
I absolutely recommend this book! Very Detailed-from the beautiful Silkstones to the innovative Dolls Of The World-Princess Collection(I have almost EVERY one!)-stunning photos, close-ups and all-if you collect Barbie, you MUST have this book(and the other with the special store editions)-
Book Description
From AAFES to Zeller's, this is the only book you will ever need to identify and value your retailer exclusive Barbie dolls! This book includes all retail exclusives since 1972, when Montgomery Ward issued their own 'original Barbie' on the occasion of their 100th anniversary. As of 2004 over 90 retailers have sold a Barbie exclusive at one time. This exhaustive book includes all of those retailers and their treasures, and many dolls feature close-ups for ease in identification. Over 500 dolls not shown in previous editions have been added to this volume, along with 60 new fashions. Fans of Barbie doll's little sister Kelly will be delighted to learn that over 100 Kelly dolls have been added, making this a great Kelly reference as well. Some of the latest retailers to join the exclusives bandwagon include Big Lots, Dollar General, Hard Rock Cafe, Mary Kay Cosmetics, the Mattel Store, See's Candies, and Walgreen's. It's author Augustyniak's best work yet.

Collector's Encyclopedia Of Barbie Doll Exclusives: Identification & Values 1972-2004 .......2007-06-08
Excellent Reference Book for Modern Barbie Doll Collectors.
Barbie collector book.......2007-04-11
What an excellent resource. We had three generations reading every page about their favorite Barbies and we all learned so much.
Collector's Encyclopedia Of Barbie Doll Exclusives: Identification & Values 1972-2004 .......2007-01-16
The Collector's Encyclopedia Of Barbie Doll Exclusives is a great reference to the value of different types of Barbies. I was a little dissapointed that the Holiday Barbies and Bob Mackie Barbies are not listed in the book but I was pleased, otherwise. I would recommend this book.
Collector's Encyp. of Barbie Doll Exclusivies/1972-2004.......2006-07-20
Having read the other collector's encyclopedia's written by this author, this one is also a beautiful collection of the Barbie doll's one may want to know about and/or collect. The pictures are well done and the descriptions very clear and understandable. At a book store, before even my first purchase of these books, I skimmed other books stating they had what I was looking for, but none compared to Michael J. Augustyniak's. Through his books, I have been able to purchase Barbies at what I know is a fair and good price for my own collection. Very good resource book. Highly recommended.
Book Description
Back by popular demand, Barbie, The First 30 Years is back in an outstanding 2nd edition. More than 1,000 dolls are presented this time, and over 2,500 Barbiedolls, accessories, sets, and more are showcased. Collectors will find not only Barbie, but Ken, Tutti Todd, Skipper, Casey, Francie, Stacey, Midge, Christie, and many other friends and family in the book. There are prototypes, foreign outfits, cases, promotional items, displays, gift sets, booklets, and even some dolls from the 1990s. REVIEW: This book chronicles Barbie throughout her first 30 years of production, and provides an entertaining look at the way she changed over that period of time.

A good starting point........2004-04-30
This book is a good starting point for collectors. With information on vintage dolls and even some newer dolls too. This book explains How to use the price guide, since most dolls found are not truly mint or mint in the box. It also has lots of color photographs, to make identification of a doll easy. The layout of this book is nice too, there are different sections for dolls, outfits, cases and so on. Dolls are listed by year, making a particular Barbie or Friend fairly easy to find.
This book is not as in depth as some other Barbie doll books on the market, you will not be able to find specific markings for each doll as well as a complete list of accessories - exactly what booklet, shoes, wrist tag, box (and so on) each doll came with. Also some of the photographs are fairly small, but that said, this is still a good book.
I would also like to add that this book features many foreign dolls and accessories, Not sold in the US. (Lot's of Barbie stuff that were exclusive to Canadian and European, as well as other markets.)
Book Description
Included in this extensive guide with over 300 colour photos are Barbie and Family doll trunks, Ken, Midge, and Francie doll cases, Skipper, Skooter, and Tutti doll cases, hat boxes, lunch boxes, wallets, pen and pencil cases, and hard plastic doll trunks. With some of the earliest cases dated from 1961, this nostalgic collector's book is filled with current values and detailed descriptions of these colourful cases and containers.

Great photos and good descriptions.......2006-02-01
Just what the novice barbie collector needs! I was pulling my hair out trying to tell one case from the next. This really helped me identify which of my cases were vintaigge and valuable. The book more than paid for it's self by the time I sold my first case.
Fabulous!.......2000-05-31
This book is absolutely WONDERFUL! I purchased this book to use as a handbook referral guide when I was buying up vinyl Barbie cases on Ebay for my collection. It is absolutely the "bible" for Barbie vinyl cases: the pictures are invaluable, & the information given is gold. If you are a serious Barbie vinyl collector, you MUST have this book--I would highly recommend to any Barbie collector!
Collector's Guide to Barbie Doll Vinyl Cases.......2000-01-10
This book was extremely helpful in identifying all the vintage Barbie cases and the different variations. With the help of this book I was able to indentify and purchase several rare cases. I would recommend this book to all serious Barbie collectors! Many thanks to Connie Craig Kaplan for writing this book!
A Must-Have for Doll Case Collectors.......1999-05-20
Kaplan uses just the right blend of pictures and commentary to make this book an absolute "must-have" for the Barbie doll case collector. From the very first case all the way through the generic early '70's cases, Kaplan has it covered. There are mentions of late '60's vinyl lunchboxes, and she even displays coin purses, pencil pouches, and room/structures that double as cases. It doesn't appear as though she missed a thing in the genre. Kaplan has created a superb and interesting book with realistic prices that will not only entertain and help the reader reminisce; but, it will also have you running to your attic to see if you still have that old case of yours in the corner. Terrific!
Customer Reviews:
Don't buy for the values, but for identification.......2004-10-05
Ok, Let's get the negatives out of the way:
1. This book is seriously incomplete. No Skipper, No Kelly, No Ken.
2. Does not cover the 1990's decade. Only covers 1989 to part of 1997.
3. The only description provided is year, name, Item # and an inflated price guide value
BUT
The reason you buy this book is for the pictures. This is THE best book for identifying Pink Box Barbies from 1989 to 1997. She provides two pictures for every doll, a full length picture from straight out of the box and a close-up of the face. And when you have a nude barbie found on the 50 cent table at a garage sale, the face is all you have to identify it. This is a valuable resource for Barbie resellers as an identification tool, but you may as well ignore the over-inflated price value. These are Pink Box Barbies, not Exclusives.
Does not have all 1990's.......2003-09-25
If your looking for a book that would have Barbie, Skipper, ken, stacey, Kelly and friends. This is not the book you want.
It doesn't even have all the 1990's barbie dolls, it is only from 1980 to 1997. It Only has Barbie, Friends and no family.
A Great Little Book.......2002-10-10
The author of this book gives us exactly what she claims to offer. Concise illustrations of the regular "pink box" Barbie dolls of the 1990's. There are other wonderful books featuring the older Barbie dolls but the regular dolls from the 1990's are frequently left out. The full body and close up shots have been helpful in identifying my recent thrift store finds. The author provides us with issue dates and stock numbers and approximate values at date of publication. The specific head and body markings are unfortunately not included.
Barbie-The Whole Story Please.......2000-04-30
Maria Mmartinez-Esguerra has written a book about Barbie in the 1990's and that is fine for those who began collecting in that decade. However, to really learn about Barbie and her history, I don't see the purpose of this book. A reference for one decade will be lacking because Barbie was born in 1959. That is a lot of history and the years between have told the story much better than this book.

A Must for the Barbie Enthusiast!.......2000-05-31
There's not a lot of printed information in this book, it's mostly pictures, but I absolutely LOVE this book. The pictures are great, & they come in handy if you need something to refer to, say for auction information (buying or selling). I highly recommend this book if it's pictures of vintage items you're after, you won't be disappointed!

"Exactly what I was looking for!".......2003-10-07
I have looked at many many books trying to find one that would help me to easily identify Barbie. Well folks, this is it! The pictures are wonderful, brightly colored and large enough to see detail. This is a "Must Have" book if you are a collector. (or if you buy used dolls to make up an OOAK) Well worth the money spent. I highly recommend!
Wonderful Encyclopedia for Barbie collectors!.......2001-10-24
This book is the most wonderful Encyclopedia about Barbie dolls. It has so many dolls listed with descriptions, prices and pics of the dolls in their boxes. Many pink boxes, OOAK Mattel dolls and collectibles. Pictures are nice, they are from the doll in box, and there are closes on some dolls.
If you need information on Pink Boxes, this book is the best!!! There are a new version 'cos this is not updated, the dolls showed ends on 1999. There are no 2000 dolls or 2001. But there are a second edition, so search for the new edition!
Good Book.......2001-03-30
This book was very informative regarding dolls and values. I wish it would have had more of the "Special Edition" models and values though. Lots of pictures that are a good size for viewing and easy to see.
This book is put together very well, the index pages in the back make it easy to locate the dolls that you are looking for. I am a beginner and this book was very helpful for me to put a value on the dolls that I already have.
And I Thought I Knew Barbie!.......2000-04-06
I just received the COLLECTOR'S ENCYCLOPEDIA of BARBIE by JMichael Augustyniak. I thought I knew a lot about the value of eachdoll, I sell them and buy them regularly right here on amazon.com auctions. However, I opened the pages of this book and it is fantastic and a must for any serious collector. All the photos are in color, by date, series, it is all in this book. You will be amazed that some Barbies are valued in high 5 figures! I'm so glad I have this reference. Everyone who is interested in Barbie should! END

The WORST of all Barbie Book Series!.......2003-01-25
If you have any love of the English language, and are able to tell good photographs from bad ones, you will truly dislike all of the books by this woman that I have read, including Barbie Exclusives volumes 1, 2 and 3. The text is virtually unreadable, almost completely devoid of any real information, and is generally a painful experience. The photographs are almost equally bad, ranging from grainy yellowish shots, to lovely ones in which box-front glare almost obliterates any details of the doll inside. Truly, you can do much better than this series! Try the Collector's Encyclopedia of Barbie Doll Exclusives and More by J. Michael Augustyniak.
