Antique Guns.......2007-02-22
Flayderman is the bible of antique gun collecting. Very informative historically with good bibliography for specific manufacturers. Only issue is copyright is 2001 and values have changed a lot in the interim.
Flayderman's Guide.......2006-06-29
I am an ardent collector of antique firearms. Flayderman's is an absolutely essential resource with detailed information about practically every firearm ever produced in early America. There simply is nothing comparable.
Flayderman's Guide.......2006-02-26
I am a CW buff, and often would look at items listed on the various sites, not knowing the details. Now I can be sure I know the model, date of mfg, value.
Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms and Their Values.......2006-01-31
One may disagree with some of the prices given but if a novice collector bought only one book, this should be it for the wealth of information found within its almost 700 pages of photos and text. Whether your area of interest is Civil War arms, Indian guns, air and spring guns, or even whaling guns you'll find this book helpful. My only criticism is the arrangement of the index and that was the responsibililty of the publisher.
Flayderman is Out of Date.......2005-05-09
Flayderman's has not revised gun values since 2001. They put a date on the reverse of the fly page of 2004, but it just a re-print of the one compiled in 2000 and printed in 2001. I hope others are not fooled like I was thinking they are getting an updated book. I feel I wasted my money. Gun values have changed too much in the last few years, and I find this book worthless.

Customer Reviews:
"Must have" book.......2007-07-13
This book has invaluable information for all gun enthusiasts, not only S & W collectors. Very well written and illustrated. A "must have" book.
Indispensible.......2007-07-02
This book is indispensible to the S&W collector. It is the S&W collector's Bible. Worth three times thecost, you need to buy it right now!
Excellent reference and not a clone.......2007-05-31
The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson has proven to be a useful tool, offering better illustration of models and expanded listing of models and details over the more general guides. By comparison, the Standard Catalog provides 70 pages of Smith & Wesson listings, while the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson provides 432. The authors, Jim Supica and Richard Nahas are recognized as long standing experts in Smith and Wesson firearms, in both model identification and value.
The authors did an excellent job of identifying factors unique to S&W in value determination, including how S&W collectors might differ from others. Section One, as an example, covers S&W frame sizes and side plate screw counts, pinned and unpinned barrels and hand ejector models as they relate to model identification. Engraving is organized by artist, by time period and by source. NRA condition classifications are extended further into finish and factory refinish, modifications, serial number integrity and grips. I did not realize there was such a big market for S&W stocks. Not only are stocks addressed, but so are manuals and boxes.
The organization is good. Not appearing strictly in model number order or date of production, S&W revolvers are broken into groups such as "Tip Up", "Top Break", "Single Shot", "Early Hand Ejector", "Modern Hand Ejector", "Semi-Auto....". It really isn't so difficult for even a novice to navigate and there is a good solid model number index at the back of the book. Covered firearms are all S&W handguns through the S&W 460 and S&W 500 chambers, long guns, boxes, cases, and even AR 15 types of current production. Individual model entries are not sketchy. As an example, just one line listings of Model 10 specials and variations went on for two full pages. Model descriptions are very full, unique characteristics in product or packaging indicated, dates of production and production counts are present in each case. To some extend, branded general merchandise is also covered; knives, belt buckles, etc.
The book is an excellent value.
The Smith & Wesson Legend.......2007-05-13
All the revolvers/automatics that made Smith & Wesson famous along with the boxes/accessories that made them "complete" are shown in excellent detail. Serial/model numbers are listed with amazing accuracy along with information about the engineering changes and reason for them. A "must have" for anyone interested in these legendary firearms.
Great Book.......2007-05-13
This guide is the essential book for Smith & Wesson collectors. Written by two fellows that are always willing to respond to questions from anyone about the topic. Must reading

Antique Guns: The Collector's Guide.......2006-07-10
Very interesting, but not exactly what I was looking for. Still a very informative book.
An important collector's reference.......2005-12-08
Any who buy, sell or trade in antique firearms needs to know identification, firearm specs, and how to value one: Shooter's Bible Presents Antique Guns: A Collector's Guide provides everything needed to do all of this. Color photos introduce the topic, but the heart of the title isn't color: it's black and white photos paired with caliber, barrel, weight and model specifications. Year of introduction or making and current valuation creates an important collector's reference.

Lots of pictures, but...........2006-11-05
Well, it's a great big coffee table book, with lots of nice photos. However, there are some glaring errors here.
I'll leave aside the strange spelling and syntax errors, which appear to show carelessness in editing; though these errors are scattered profusely throughout the book.
The real problem I have is with the sloppy research on some of the important firearms. For example, the entry for the M1 Garand rifle (pp 420-423) says "The M1 was also produced in a carbine version..." and shows the M1 Carbine, clearly indicating that the M1 Carbine is somehow a cut down version of the Garand! "Carbine" Williams must be rolling over in his grave; the two arms have nothing in common, other than both being gas operated. They were of totally different design, developed by different people, and used different ammunition.
There are other such fundamental errors, which detract substantially from the book's appeal. However, I will give the author credit for his efforts to be comprehensive; there are many fine arms in here which I have not seen referenced in any other book, including the Chilean Modelo 1912 made by Steyr (pg. 279), an example of which I am proud to own, and about which this book did provide some useful information.
A bit more careful attention to detail would have made this a five star book. I hope that later editions clean up the errors and make this the world class reference book that it deserves to be.
Guns.......2006-09-12
I bought this book as a gift for my dad who has quite a large collection of guns. Personally, I'm not very knowledgable as far as the makes, calibers, countries of origin, and original uses of the various gun types; so I could not judge whether or not the book gives accurate information for each weapon featured in the book.
I did glance through a few pages. For each firearm listed there is a clear photograph provided and a paragraph of information. I would not call the paragraph too short, but neither would I say that it goes very in-depth. I read a couple paragraphs and found myself wanting more information.
Guns are listed by type, then country of origin. I did notice that there is no index at the back of the book, so if you want to find a particular gun, you need to at least know what kind of gun it is; country of origin would also be helpful.
I would say this book is best suited for an experienced gun collector who already knows a lot about guns, in general, and just needs something for quick reference.
I'd also like to add something about the size of the book. It's probably around 12 inches tall, 10 inches wide, and about 3 inches thick. It weighs a ton!

Customer Reviews:
Disappointed in Coltland.......2007-03-21
A big disappointment. I own nearly all of R.L. Wilson's books, and bought this out of love for such things. Nowhere NEAR the quality of other books in my collection, it was a big, big disappointment. Not only are the photos not up to par, but the text is horrid. Doc O'Meara apparently writes to make a quick buck -- not for the love of the subject like Wilson.
Not Very Educational.......2007-03-17
If you like to look at pictures of very pretty Colt SAA's that are way too expensive for the average person to acquire, then by all means read this book--or perhaps I should say "look" at this book. There's not much to read. The author only skims the surface of what I would consider a very in-depth subject regarding the history of Colt Firearms and the "Peacemaker". The rest of the book's pages are filled with full-color photographs that really don't make for a captivating experience. The experience of this book was like having a good friend show you pictures of his/her vacation; the first few photos are interesting, but after awhile it becomes more of the same and interest is rapidly lost.
If you're looking for a very good in-depth history of Colt Firearms I would recommend "Colt: An American Legend" by R.L. Wilson. For a good historical reference on the Single Action Army specifically, I would check out C. Kenneth Moore's "Study of the Colt Single Action Army", although it is out of print and very expensive to buy. A well-stocked library should have it.
A fine reference for the Peacemaker enthusiast.......2003-12-03
This pictures alone make this book worthwhile. Very nice color plates with excellent detail. O'Meara doesn't stop with the pictures though. He gives the reader a very well researched history of the Colt company and the development of the Single Action Army.
Since the book deals with classic Peacemakers, O'meara educated himself on the art of gun engraving and discusses it in a way that will hold the reader's interest.
Highly recommended.

great!.......2002-12-04
we are a firearms distributor in manila and have been on a lookout for a source book with as many guns with the corresponding details as possible. guess i found it right here in this book. it contains every bit you want to know about guns, except for the performance, where you wont obviously get in a book like this. anyway, its a great book overall, but it could have gotten five stars if it had more pages in color. most were in black and white. nevertheless, it has really helped our business a lot
