Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Fairly Comprehensive Look at Sneakers.......2007-08-12

A great look at most of the shoes in each of the major companies respective ranges. While the descriptions and info on the shoes are pretty scant, the pictures more than make up for that. The best part of running through this book is getting hit with the nostalgia that comes with seeing so many products from the not-so-distant past. A nice modern coffee table (or ottoman, I suppose) book. Air Max 1s are the best shoes ever.

4 out of 5 stars A thorough and well presented history........2007-07-04

This book is great to look at even if you're not into sneakers. Beautifully presented design and layout, and great history details. A good oversight of all the significant brands and their best creations.

5 out of 5 stars asset to hiphip culture.......2006-02-17

this book is awesome is very informative, and if you know anything about the hip hop era then this book should be added to a persons collections.

5 out of 5 stars Clean, refreshing visual piece... it is obvious the authors did their sneaker research.......2005-08-26

I own several sneaker books including SOLE PROVIDER and Bobbito Garcia's WHERE'D YOU GET THOSE (both of which I recommend) and I found this book to be a refreshing alternative. Written by the guys behind CROOKED TONGUES (which is a fantastic site by the way), this book is meant for the sneaker collector who appreciates the aesthetic qualities of a shoe, rather than for someone who only buys into the hype and player endorsement. For practically every sneaker that is showcased, at least one clear photo, brief history, and random fact dedicated to each shoe. I also appreciated the effort by the authors to distinguish original editions from reissues. In addition, the sneaker "dictionary" and collecting/cleaning tips sections are great as well.

One word of caution is that I would not recommend the book for those who are only into Air Jordans, or Dunks, or swear by only one sneaker brand. The book contains information for a variety of different models and brands, some which are more obscure. For example, I found myself skipping over some Vans, Reebok, and Diadora models. The authors also have more of preference for vintage running shoes as well. But if you have an open mind and an eclectic taste in sneakers, I recommend owning this book.

Book Description

Art flourished in France to an exciting and unprecedented degree in the 19th century. Sculpture was a part of this fantastic explosion of creative genius with such artistic giants as Rodin, Barye, d'Angers and Carpeaux. At the same time technological advances in the bronze industry transformed sculpture from an art form for public plazas and the rich to art for living rooms and vestibules of even the middle class. The result has been an abundant supply of nineteenth century French bronzes-some common reproductions, and some extremely valuable limited editions. In this important reference, you can discover a wealth of information. This extraordinary volume contains a complete encyclopedia of almost 750 French artists, with biographies, listings of works (along with size and foundry when known), museum pieces in France and elsewhere, and recent sales. It also includes an overview of 19th century bronze sculpture, the foundries that cast the bronzes, and methods used to cast works. 1000 photographs capture the beauty of the pieces and help identify these and similar works.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars an inquirer's book.......2007-01-30

This book was perfect for my parents who like to know all they can about the antiques they have. This book is well illustrated and thorough. Of all the bronze books they ahve recently aquired, this one is their favorite. They wanted the book for the Mene and Barye bronze information in particular and were pleased to find most of their pieces in the book. I would recommend this book for those wanting to know about thier bronzes and the people behind them. ( My parents love it.)

4 out of 5 stars Reference Work for Classical Bronzes.......2007-01-21

This publication will be of interest to 2 groups of people. Firstly collectors of Bronze figures of the classical period will be able to use this as a reference for studying artists which thewy may encounter in their antique hunting. The book is large and imrpessive and handsomely presented with colour and B & W photographs.
For the second group (lovers of quality books) this one is very impressive and is of the type that would make a great coffee table book.
I am in both categories and will use this publication for both avid collecting and just as a good read.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars cheerful.......2004-08-23

I love this book, I love several of the collections (my favorite has to be the robots), and I just wish BH&G would publish a sequel. These aren't sterile environments and stuffy collections, instead there are bright, unusual, and FUN arrangements.

5 out of 5 stars Very cool.......2003-03-05

This is a very cool book for people who love their stuff. The homes are in lots of different styles. What I really like is the attitude of the book which is a bit about breaking the rules instead of having boring, picture-perfect rooms. A very refreshing take on design today.

5 out of 5 stars I totally love this book.......2003-01-10

if you are a collector, you will love this book as much as we do. It is intriguing to see how other people decorate with their collections. The book features styles that go from modern to traditional. I've shared this book with my design clients to show them that they can edit and organize their favorite collectibles to create well-designed rooms. Lots of good design information here plus tips on specific hot collectibles. This book is a real find.

5 out of 5 stars A great book about breaking the rules.......2003-01-04

This is a great book about breaking all the so-called decorating rules. This book shows one do-your-own-thing home after another, each filled with its own unique collectibles. There's everything from fine (and pricey) Italian glassware to mid-century modern and tramp art and colonial treasures. And more. There is a lot in the book on how to decorate with and display collections. An interesting book packed with great photos and information.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting, funky, stylish, weird, inspiring.......2003-01-04

Full of surprises, this is a book I bought as a gift for someone, and then I liked thumbing through it so much that I bought myself a copy too. The book lets you "tour" real homes around the country, but it also provides lots of decorating advice and in-depth info on the collectibles shown in the homes. The book has everything from Fifties kitsch to fine antiques and shows everything from modern style to traditional. It's all about collecting and then decorating with what you love (versus decorating to fit someone else's idea of what's hot at the moment). A fun and funky book for anyone who loves their "stuff."

Book Description

One of the few rock performers to have become a household name, Alice Cooper is a living legend of theatrical rock. Bringing together biographical information, insights, stories, and detailed descriptions of his music, this fan guide to Alice Cooper covers his early bands in the 1960s, the Alice Cooper Group, and his solo career that continues to the present day. Each chapter is devoted to a specific time period in his career, and includes details about his personal life, recordings, tours, films, television appearances, and books within those years.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Impressive!.......2002-06-22

I was very impressed with the intensity of the research and detail of this book. The author takes you chronologically through Alice's career, focussing on recordings, tours, film and television and books. He goes bit by bit, album by album, single by single, and fills each entry with loads of detail. Minutiae including who played what, on which song, how the song did on the charts, variation in design, dates, formats, catalogue numbers, trivia-pretty much everything I wanted to know about Alice's output from 1964 to 1998. The book is split into five periods: 1964-74, 1975-79, 1980-82, 1984-1990, and 1991-1998. It is chock full of photos (many of which I had never seen before) both in black and white and in color and information (much of which I didn't know). It is a fascinating read for the Alice Cooper fan, and written so it can be read like a book (I read it cover to cover the first day I got it), or used as a reference guide (I have referred to it many times since). I can't recommend it enough for anyone who has questions about Alice or his music. This book answers it all.

5 out of 5 stars best book on ALICE collectibles available!.......1999-12-01

This book is jam packed of any and every item imaginable on Alice. It is an amazingly informative as well. Each item is described in such detail you literally get lost in it.Has lots and lots of photos of the merchandise.Has rare bootlegs etc, too. Don't hestitate on getting this one. It is a winner!

4 out of 5 stars alice cooper on the rd........1999-11-28

this book is very well done.the focus is on tour dates, where he played, what city, etc. in addition,it has some text about who the band members were,tv shows and special events, bootlegs, and much more.it is not a dedicated history to the man--but more a sleek year by year diary from the 70s to the 90s--in fact, reading this really makes you want to see alice live!i found it to be concise and a pleasure to read.very well researched!

4 out of 5 stars everything alice related is covered! A complete guide!.......1999-07-06

this collectors guide is ideal for the novice or advanced Alice fan. Everything is here including info about bootlegs and other unofficial stuff. Also included is tour info, details of AC recordings, and AC on film and video. This is not a price guide, rather a valuable reference. Softback, 300 pages including many color and rare photos.

Book Description

This comprehensive new reference focuses on the variety of animal figures produced in Staffordshire during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Characterized by a cottage industry quaintness, Staffordshire figures were known as "image toys" and "chimney ornaments" in their day. Countless subjects were produced but the animal models comprise a Noah's Ark of some of the most charming and endearing figures. Today, Staffordshire animals are among the bestselling and most widely collected antique ceramics. Beautifully illustrated with over 400 color photographs, this book traces animal figure evolution through chapters on animals in art, British ceramics, Staffordshire potters and potteries, and production techniques and styles. Informative captions provide descriptions, dates of manufacture, and current values.

5 out of 5 stars Staffordshire Animals.......2007-07-16

This book is well worth the money if you are an avid collector of Straffordshire pieces. Many detailed photographs, identifiying marks and interesting history make this book a must for your collection. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo Adele Kenny and Schiffer Publishing.......2001-11-04

In words of one syllable, YOU MUST BUY THIS BOOK! As the owner of an antiques business and one who sells Staffordshire figures, I endorse this book without reservation. Narrowing the subject to one category of Staffordshire collecting and an in-depth study makes this reference text as unique as Adele Kenny's other books and numerous articles that have been published in widely circulated periodicals like The Antiques News, Antiques & Auction News, and Carter's Antiques & Collectables (Australia). This is MUCH more than the usual Stafforshire picture book (although the hundreds of illustrations are marvelous). The presentation is wonderful, the book design and quality are superior, and the content is without equal. Staffordshire Animals is destined to become a standard reference in the field.

5 out of 5 stars For Lovers of Staffordshire: YOU NEED THIS BOOK!.......2000-08-09

This specialized and comprehensive reference book is a must-have for collectors and dealers! Unlike those large and unwieldy "catalogs" of little more than picture after picture, Kenny has included interesting amd informative text that provides invaluable insights into pottery making in Staffordshire as well as a substantial sampling of illustrations. Suggested values give an accurate sense of current, and rising, market. Kenny's book is well-organized and beautifully presented. Her writing style is intelligent, lively, and very reader-friendly. If you love Staffordshire figures, you'll love this book!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Important contribution to the field of Mexican folk art.......1998-12-10

McMenamin's lavishly illustrated tome covers many areas of Mexican folk art, including certain forms specifically created for the American tourist market in the 1920's, 30's and 40's. Folk ceramics, talavera, textiles, furniture, wood carvings, popote or straw mosaics, lacquerware, loteria drawings and carved coconut banks are among the folk art genres included in this well-researched book. As a collector of Mexican folk art, I know only too well how difficult it is to find books in English on this subject; McMenamin offers both the serious scholar and the casual collector precious insight into many folk art forms that have almost completely disappeared or are languishing because of the acculturation that inevitably occurs with foreign contact. Popular Arts of Mexico (1850-1950) is a good, basic overview of areas other than traditional dance masks and Los Dias de Los Muertos-related folk art.

5 out of 5 stars Simply "The Bible" for Mexican folk art lovers.......1998-12-05

Beautiful pictures, informed text! Collectors use this "Bible" as a reference to describe their Mexican folk art.

Most of the information is unavailable in other books.

Plus, the book is gorgeous.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible of Mexican Popular Arts Collecting!.......1998-12-05

I was first told about Donna McMenamin's book "Popular Arts of Mexico" by a fellow collector of Mexicana who thought I might like it. I remember telling him I had too many other interest to get involved in such a broad field of collecting. At that time I was collecting the most basic of Mexican chotzkie, anything with a "Sleeping Mexican" on it seemed appropriate. Then I saw Donna's book. One word...Wow. I was first just blown away with the pictures, such clear and concise images. And the detail! Sadly, I was hooked. I started taking her book with me on jaunts to the antique mall where I would pick up anything that looked remotely similar. Can you say expensive? Eventually, because of the book, I was able to spot things on my own, which was great, and much cheaper. :-) Donna's book has opened up a whole new world of collecting for me. I had never seen a carved wood panel, known as "bas relief." When I saw the chapter in her book I just knew I had to own one. They are incredible and have now become a focal point in our collection of TRUE Mexican Popular Arts. OK, I still like sleeping Mexican things, but I'm crazy! :-) It would be difficult for me to say a collectibles book changed my life, I guess it seems so shallow, however, Donna's book gave me a new awareness of things that are amazingly beautiful. I'd say that's a positive life change. Can you say sappy book review? :-)

    3 out of 5 stars Closer to 2.5 stars.......2007-10-04

After Volume 1 the Seventies, which was a fantastic read and a book to which I still refer on a regular basis, I waited with baited breath for Volume 2 the Eighties. I feel it must have been my preference for the music of the 70's that was such a strong influence on my overall luke warm reception of this episode in the trilogy.
In my review of Volume 1, to which I still awarded 4.5 stars incidentally, I was critical of the author's exclusion of the albums of Wishbone Ash, after going to great lengths to explain that the accepted standard of what was "heavy music" in those far off days was greatly different from later times. Said omission after this explanation was something of a contradiction in terms. Despite that, in this current volume he reviews no less that four Bon Jovi albums. This struck me as a distinctly incongruous inclusion given the author's own stated values, especially in light of the commonly accepted view that the 80's were the "metal years".
I also preferred the seperate "heaviness" and "merit" rating system applied in the earlier volume to the single assessment mark applied in this volume. The stated reason for this change was the fact that any album reviewed in this book was clearly heavy by reason of the sheer amount of material around in the 80's. How does Bon Jovi find its way in if one applies those standards?
Don't get me wrong, this is still an enjoyable read but it does not live up to the high standards set in Volume 1. .
(Incidentally I am about two thirds of the way through Volume 3 the Nineties as I finally get around to writing this, and things are not looking good for the forthcoming review).
All in all I can not recommend this as strongly as Volume 1, but as with all reviews, this is a subjective view. Support the author, buy it yourself if you are a fan of this type of music, and make up your own mind.

4 out of 5 stars An inspired effort.......2006-12-04

This book is the updated entry in his Collector's Guide series, which improves on the original book that included all three decades of metal up to 97. As Popoff explains in the introduction, it was time to add many records left out in the original (for all three decades) and in many cases redo the reviews, because in his opinion many of them weren't on par with his current writing prowess. This was potentially the most significant of the three books, because the 80s were arguably metal's highest point ever. It was at the peak of its popularity, many of the most acclaimed albums belong to this decade, legendary bands (Metallica, Iron Maiden, etc.) began their careers here, and there's no style today that didn't begin here, at least distantly.

Now here's the problem. The 70s book was a very comprehensive book, including tons of albums and obscurities, but the genre wasn't as abundant back then. With the 80s book, Popoff had to work with a much bigger output, which forced him, in order to finish the book, to not redo all the reviews, but cut & paste many of them. While still having more new reviews, he left out, probably hundreds. Now, other reviewers have complained about the abscense of small-time bands (in the context of metal's history) that probably were left out knowingly and with good reason. However, Morbid Angel's Altars of Madness, Annihilator's Alice in Hell, White Zombie's first (but mainly unknown) albums and maybe a few others are entries that deserve to be here, and I hope Popoff includes them in a future reissue of the book. Otherwise, all the big guns and hundreds of others are here, and if you want to know about a lot of bands you might not know, this is the book. Very recommended.

3 out of 5 stars questionable inclusions and exclusions and too many holes.......2006-06-16

This is basically a cut and paste from his previous books, a Collectors Guide and Riffs Rule, which I prefer as they cover the artist's entire catalogue up until publication date.

I love his delightful descriptions, certainly not boring to read.

Please note, the man has no love for live albums, like qreatest hites, he loves punk ala the Stooges, but hates progressive metal like Hawkwind, Fates Warning, Rush, Queensyche etc.

His exclusion of bands then considered heavy metal like Wishbone Ash, Savoy Brown etc are a major disappointment, especially when he includes bands like Sonic Youth, which no one in the 1980's considered Heavy Metal.

Likewise, Progressive Rock was loved equally by heavy metal fans where bands like Jethro Tull and Yes were featured in other heavy metal reviews, but excluded here, yet he includes progressive rock bands like It Bites.

Similarly, southern rock ala Black Oak Arkansas and Lynyrd Skynrd were then considered metal, yet left out, but Blackfoot is left in.

You can't please everyone, but the questionable inclusions and exclusions and too many holes that don't justify such inclusions and exclusions result in a less than possitive review

    2 out of 5 stars Empty knowledge.......2006-04-02

Martin Popoff knows metal music within his own mind. He just can't seem to review metal music in a consistent, or consistently understandable way, nor write effectively. His ratings don't always match his writings. His prose is laughable. His effort is a example of a useless Canadian export.

5 out of 5 stars Martin knows his shit.......2006-02-24

This guide continues where the seventies left off, I have the original CGTHM and through that I found some great bands I being 25 years old would have never heard. Martin tells it like it is and sometimes I disagree but he's never to far off. He tells you exactly what you need to if your a metalhead, "great for hanging out with some cold ones ,or a car deck classic," and when he gives something a ten its always been a ten.
