Book Description
Collecting Japanese Antiques shows what makes Japanese aesthetics so different from other countries. Antique hunters will benefit from the practical and cautionary advice in this book; newcomers will appreciate information on the basics of collecting; while other sections might reawaken interest in experienced collectors. Striking photographs highlight the beauty and craftsmanship of items such as solid wood chests and elegant prints and ceramics. A glossary explains antique-related Japanese terms.

Best introduction to Japanese antiques in print.......2006-07-06
If you love Japanese antiques, you cannot live without this survey, with superb photography, spectacular taste, ecclectic choice, and scholarly background by the editor of Daruma magazine. I actually buy extra copies for my friends. I buy a new copy when mine starts to get worn. What more can be said?
lavish, comprehensive, informative antique guide.......2005-01-26
This is not your typical collector's handbook listing objects and possibly briefly describing them and listing going prices. This coffee-table quality book with the title "Collecting Japanese Antiques" is a survey of Japanese art works and cultural items with sections of advice for collectors. The historical and cultural background on the different items favors what would be of interest to collectors. But it is also informative and relevant simply for its artistic, historical, and cultural material. Readers looking for concentrated information on Japanese art and culture accompanied by attractive color photographs would find this work exceptionally suitable. For the collectors it is meant for particularly, there's sections on "Tides and Trends in Collecting," guidance in developing collections of certain items (e. g., baskets), lists of artists, notable regions and schools for certain antiques, and especially desirable objects in certain categories. Seton also moves to the technical subjects of materials, production, and workmanship which are important for collectors not only in appreciating items and assessing their value, but in making a preliminary decision about their age and authenticity. Among Seton's 13 categories of antiques are screens and scrolls, ceramics, furniture, sculpture and metalwork, dolls, and tea ceremony utensils. Seton has lived in Japan since 1972, where he currently teaches Japanese art and poetry. In 1993, he founded the quarterly magazine "Daruma" to cover Japanese art and antiques; which he still edits. "Collecting Japanese Antiques" is a work any collector or lover of Japanese art and antique objects will want for sound education and easy reference, and at times for enjoyably looking at the numerous color photos of the varied Japanese objects.
Best Book About Japanese Antiques.......2004-11-18
This book is a real treasure. If you buy just one book about Japanese art and antiques, this is it. Its presentation, descriptions and explanations are excellent. Reading this book is learning and pleasure at the same time.
I know the author personally and one can really see in this book his love and dedication to Japanese art.
For everybody who wants to learn more about Japanese art and antiques I strongly recommend the magazine "Daruma" which is edited by Alistair Seton.

Knowledgeable and stunning.......2004-11-06
The photos in this book are stunning. The author is knowledgeable.
If you can't live in Japan to be near the beauty of its art, then this is second best. Rarely will you be able to get such thorough descriptions, history and feeling for the art and antiques of Japan.

Book Description
They came from Japan -- those larger-than-life monsters that terrorized Tokyo and then stomped their way into America's households and hearts. The success of Godzilla, Mothra, and Rodan has inspired action figures, dolls, plush toys, model kits, comic books, posters, and records. This thorough guide covers five decades' worth of collectibles based on these appealing monsters.
Customer Reviews:
DON'T PANIC...IT'S ONLY GODZILLA!.......2002-04-02
Dana Cain's book is an enjoyable, well written guide to an increasingly popular sub-category of monster toy collecting. No book on pricing collectibles is likely to remain current for long, and its real value lies in providing the reader with a pictorial overview of its subject. COLLECTING JAPANESE MOVIE MONSTERS succeeds very well in this, and its text provides some lively historical background into that singularly odd period in cinema where colossal creatures used Tokyo as a ring and we watched guilt-free. Note to "serious" Japanese movie monster collectors: don't take it all so seriously. Those responsible for the men in the monster suits didn't.
A good book with info not found elsewhere.......1999-07-26
While not perfect, this book is better than the earlier reviews said. The book is very well illustrated, and most of the pictures are very clear and sharp. To say that the pictures come mainly from a Toys-R-Us is simply false: The vast majority of the toys pictured are items not even distributed in the U.S., to say nothing of the movie posters, magazines, etc.
Any price guide is eventually going to be out of date. Many of the prices in this book are still current, although there are several that are not. I did find a couple of errors, where a picture was incorrectly labeled. To be fair, Sean Linkenback's book has similar errors and in many examples his prices are more dated than Ms. Cain's, plus her book includes items not even listed in his.
Yes, Linkenback's book is more in-depth, but it has its flaws too. As with other kinds of price guides, thinking of a single edition as being all encompassing or definitive is a mistake.
Bad........1999-01-30
This is not the first price guide on these toys. Sean Linkenback's was the first and much better than this.... Ms./Mr. Cain should research the subject before saying what prices are. Linkenback is a respected dealer of Japanese toys and thus infitely more qualified for an endeavor such as this. Cain, you should take a research class.
Not as good as other books on the subject.......1999-01-09
I was really looking forward to this book, and unfortunately con not find much to recommend about it. The listings are woefully incomplete and many times inaccurate. Photography is only so-so, and is mainly filled with items from the local Toys-R-Us. A better book to get would be "The Unauthorized Guide to Godzilla Collectibles". The one bright spot is the 14 pages on Gamera, which while could be better is finally altogether under one cover.
Book Description
Over 600 photos together with a special section on marks and backstamps, Japanese patent numbers, and trademarks. Ashtrays, bells, candleholders, pitchers, salt and pepper sets, souvenirs, vases, wall pockets, figurines, and much more are included. New sections include Lobster Ware and Japanese Arts Crafts-style vases. AUTHORBIO: Carole White is the author of a four-volume series on Made in Japan Ceramics. She also wrote Collector's Guide to Lunchboxes and Glass Ceramic Baskets. REVIEW: This book updates information on a range of ceramics made in Japan. An introductory discussion of maker's marks provides illustrated examples while chapters organized by item type, from bookends to condiment sets and cigarette items, makes for quick reference. It is the perfect book for collectors of Made in Japan ceramics, and is a perfect addition to the three-volume series by the author.

MADE IN JAPAN collectibles.......2007-06-14
I collect older (collectible) MADE IN JAPAN items and therefore I have quite a few books on the subject. This book is not complete but quite helpful. Photos are nice.
Many different volumes have been written on this subject. Infact, I own 3 other books on this subject.
When "Made in Japan" collectibles were issued there were sooooo many different items sold, that it would be impossible to include all of them in just one book. The author tried and did a good job though.
Not as good as the others.......2006-01-31
While this line of books continues to give pictures and markings for research and collecting, the author seems to be running out of examples when there are so many out there he could include.
Too Little Information.......2000-06-04
I purchased this book for the sole purpose of "Marks" identification. Sure there are pictures of marks, but none are identified. When I did a search to find books with oriental markings, this book was suggested. I was very disappointed ... pictures are great ... values appear too high. Enough said.
One of the Best !.......2000-03-21
Great color photos, informative text and a section on Identification marks that is worth the price of the whole book! I'm buying books #2 and 3 !

Book Description
Ceramic pieces sold by Napco*r (National Potteries Corporation) are distinctive and popular again today. From its prolific output of the 1950s and 1960s to its miniature bone china imports of the 1970s, Napco has held the interest of collectors because the ceramic items are consistently well-designed. This volume brings together information on all of the Napco*T lines, including chapters on animal figures, birthday sets, decorative items and kitchenware, figurines and planters, and head vases. There is a separate section on Inarco*T (International Artware Corporation), sister company of Napco. Collectors of holiday items, angels, and nursery rhyme characters will find plenty of interest in these pages. An added bonus is the directory of major importing companies of the fifties and sixties. With over 1,000 color photos and a price guide, this is a worthwhile addition to a ceramics collector's library.

Best NAPCO book out there, .....so far........2007-06-14
This is the best book you can find on the subject of NAPCOS. It is not 100% complete, since so many thousand NAPCOS were issued since the mid 1900's; however, this book will give the collector a very nice basis on the subject.
Excellent photos. Printed on nice paper!
Napco.......2006-01-23
This is a fantastic book for the Napco collector. It offers beautiful pictures of some of the best figurines ever made. If you're a fan of Napco, this book is a must have!
Napco by Kathleen Deel.......1999-11-23
This is by far the best book on Napco figurines and has MANY of the hard to find items fully photographed. I have been looking for a book to help me on my Storybook collectables for years and this one is a dream come true! Also has birthday angels and many, many more! So much information all photographed and in beautiful full color! Kathleen Deel knows her Napco collectables and now I will too! I highly recommend this book!
Book Description
This all-new Book II is produced as a companion volume to Book I and none of the pieces pictured are repeated from the first book. Over 600 all-new beautiful full-color photographs together with a special section on marks and backstamps aid the collector in identifying and dating a collection. Special focus is given to the many styles, different glazes, as well as care and cleaning tips. 2000 values. AUTHORBIO: Carole White is the author of a four-volume series on Made in Japan Ceramics. She also wrote Collector's Guide to Lunchboxes and Glass Ceramic Baskets. REVIEW: This book is one of the first to be written on the subject, and is written by a noted carnival glass author and collector. A history of Imperial begins the book, then patterns and photos appear alphabetically. It is a great resource for carnival glass collectors.

A wonderfully thorough reference for the collector..........2000-04-02
Carole Bess White has put together an exhaustive reference work on Japanese ceramics from the early 20th century to today. Her extensive research really pays off in this book, crammed full of photos of all types.
Bess covers everything from ash trays to water sets, candy dishes to salt & pepper sets, Satsuma to souvenir plates. I especially like the many photos of various backstamps (marks) she provides. The book has over 250 pages of photos, and includes catalog pages from current novelty producers. If you're interested in collectible ceramics "Made in Japan", don't hesitate to buy this book!
She did it again!.......2000-03-29
Book #2 is every bit as good as the first one. NO REPEATS !... and new information on the companies that made these delightful pieces. Color photos, marks and all the information you need. Ms. Whites books are getting like potato chips to me.. you can't have just one!
Book Description
With talented young Japanese players signing to the American Majors, interest in Japanese baseball is at an all-time high. Sayonara Home Run! introduces curious fans to Japan's national pastime through the lens of the country's playfully beautiful baseball cards. A fascinating text traces the roots and cross-cultural history of the Japanese game, while hundreds of illustrations showcase gorgeous vintage cards. Woven throughout are profiles of key Japanese players, features on important U.S. team tours of Japan (with Japanese cards of players such as Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio), and insights into the social history of the cards. Including primers on Japanese player nicknames and baseball terms, and the fine points of the Japanese game, Sayonara Home Run! is a must-have for anyone interested in baseball, Japan, or this unique chapter in popular design.

A Beautiful and Informative Book.......2006-04-20
Vinatge Japanese baseball cards are among the most beautiful baseball collectibles in the world. I discovered these treasures over ten years ago during a trip to Japan and became an avid collector. My passion for the cards eventually led to a on-line card business and a career as a baseball writer. John Gall and Gary Engel's new book Sayanara Homerun! depicts hundreds, if not thousands, of theese beautiful cards. The book's presentation is wonderful. Cards are gracefully portrayed as art but the accompanying text will statisfy both baseball card collectors and fans of Japanese baseball.
If you are an American baseball cards collector, come see what you are missing. If you a fan of Japanese baseball, come see great pictures of your favorite stars.
I spend hours paging through this book and expect that you will enjoy it as much as I have.

This guide helps collectors determine a print's date marks, artist seals, period placement, authenticity, condition, and value. A chapter on the techniques used to create woodblock prints - including intaglio, mezzotint, etching, engraving, lithograph, serigraph, aquatint, and offset - provides valuable, in-depth information for the art connoisseur.

WE STILL NEED A COMPREHENSIVE VALUE GUIDE.......2005-03-31
If only the content could have delivered on the promise of the Title. I think REDO would be in order.
Not too bad..........2001-04-10
...but indeed, where did she get those prices????? Still a good reference that provides loads of helpful information. A good addition to your Lane, if you are deeper into Ukiyo-e. And the price is absolutely reasonable for the amount of information provided. One of the few references that do not only give information about the classical artists, but also on sosaku hanga and shin hanga artists.
Overall disappointing, but worth owning.......2001-01-03
If you are looking for a general guide to prices for Japanese Woodblock prints this is not it. I was expecting a much more comprehensive listing, or at least a discussion about how these prints are appraised, but there are only a few price points mentioned. There is quite a bit of useful information, but this is not the good, introductory text that I was hoping for.
At one point the author says something to the effect of: "if you want to learn about Japanese Woodblock prints, go to a lot of galleries and read a lot of books on the subject." I think I kind of knew that before.
lacks depth.......2000-12-25
I was disappointed with this book. I guess I had expected a fairly comprehensive survey of auction, retail, and internet prices but this contained only brief selections from important artists, e.g. five by Hokusai, three by Harunobu, a dozen or so by Hiroshige. And I agree with another post here about pricing; some estimates are dead on, but many estimates for things I've shopped for or purchased are at least double current retail.
Nice guide, but where did she get those prices?.......2000-11-28
I found this book somewhat helpful and useful. But there is something terribly wrong with it, which makes me highly dubious of the writer's motivations. The prices are outrageously high. Every dealer I have talked to, while delighted at the inflation of values for obvious reasons, agrees that the prices are often twice or more the true market value of the prints. I have bought several of these prints in near mint condition in the past year for half the prices quoted here. I suppose I should be delighted that my purchases doubled in value overnight, but ..........

Not much pertinent information for a new collector........2000-05-23
The pictures are exquisite, but as a new collector, I was somewhat lost. I guess the idea is to buy all 5 books. I really don't like the question and answer format. So much of the information there and elsewhere is irrelevant.
Excellent book on collectiong Nippon Porcelain.......1999-08-15
This is a wonderfully informative book on the popular collecting field of Nippon Porcelain. More than half the book is brilliant color photos of a wide variety of pieces with dimensions & estimated retail prices.
What sets this book apart though is the wealth of information for collectors. There is a history of Nippon Porcelain & an insightful section of frequently asked questions. Themes including baseball, dogs & dolls are highlighted.
I especially enjoyed the original documents reproduced here including early ads with items selling for pennies, design patents, beautiful hand painted salesman sample pages and complete selection of back-stamp marks.
There is a well illustrated section on the dangerous reproductions now entering the market and many more tips to aid the new or experienced collector. This is a truly indispensable reference on Nippon.
1 of 5 essential nippon porcelain reference books.......1998-12-31
The 5th series highlights moriage swans and enameling. Reproduction section is more extensive and updated. There is also a section depicting the style evolution of nippon to further help identify and date items. A MUST for all nippon collectors and dealers.
Book Description
A continuation of Joan Van Pattens first six books, Nippon Porcelain, Seventh Series, contains absolutely no repeats from her other books. There are over 900 exciting colour photos. The presentation of each piece includes size, mark, and current collector value, and a useful index, glossary, and bibliography are attached.
Customer Reviews:
Significant Work Simplifies Mine.......2004-12-07
This book is well documented, thorough and the pictures are excellent. In addition, this book discusses the Nippon history, provides an excellent chapter on marks and backstamps with a short commentary on the different mark colors and their meanings.
I particularly liked the glossary, and cross-referenced price guide index which is placed in the back of the book yet neatly references to pages and plate #'s. Because of the extensive patterns in the Nippon history, every pattern is not in the book but I was able to identify particular shapes of pieces which I could check against marks/backstamps and the price guide to get a reasonable value range.
Any collector or dealer will suit their library well by having this book for education and reference to Nippon.
From painted vases and stamps to plates and smoking pieces.......2001-12-08
Joan Van Patten's Nippon Porcelain focuses on Japanese porcelain, from painted vases and stamps to plates and smoking pieces. Gorgeous color photos abound.
If you haven't bought this book, then you better get it soon.......2001-07-29
As part of the 5 series volume, this series contains some updates. From my previous reviews of the collection series, I've mentioned that if you are beginner, a keen buyer/seller, or an experienced collector/trader of Nippon items, then you need to have this book, along with the other series. Like the previous series, this book contains information on Nippon porcelains. It provides actual photos, and price ranges for each items featured. Nippon porcelains have their disctinctive mark, based on the year and place they were manufactured, so this book gives you what to look and watch out for, in order to identify the authencity of the item.
Get this book if you're a Nippon trader/buyer.......2001-07-29
Like the series 2 book, this is part of the 5 series volume. If you are beginner, a keen buyer/seller, or an experienced collector/trader of Nippon items, then you ought to get this book, along with the other series. The book contains a lot of information on Nippon porcelain collections. It provides nice photos, and price ranges on each items featured. It also gives you the marks to look and watch out for, in order to identify the authencity of the item.

Book Description
This new book is an excellent reference for the multitude of ceramics items marked "MADE IN JAPAN" that were exported between 1921 and 1941, after Japanese manufacturers used the "NIPPON" mark and before the "MADE IN OCCUPIED JAPAN" mark. The 350 color photographs show hundreds of household ceramics arranged in an easy-to-find alphabetical order from ash trays to wall pockets. The Price Guide makes clear that this is an excellent field for collectors priced out of other fields. Here are many humorous and novelty designs in planters, cookie jars, pitchers, teapots, cups, creamers, sugar bowls, vases, pincushion holders, lamps, dishes and salt and pepper shakers. When considering items marked "MADE IN JAPAN," expect the unexpected!
