The "Bible" of Discus Health.......2000-07-15
I have had this book since it was published and it is a complete guide to the health and well being of not only discus but other cichlids as well. If I have ever had a problem, a question or a need...this book has had the answer for me! It is, quite simply, the BEST there is...it is that simple.
a great book for both the beginner and the professional.......2000-05-25
this is a really great book with many ideas about the ways to treat discus fish and their diseases it is useful n case of any other soft water fish a famous japanese koi hatchery uses it for reference too. it saved many of my fish and saved me alot of money too.A MUST HAVE book it is now out of stock but i got a promise from the publisher to have it republished soon.

Beautiful and inspiring........2005-08-30
With this book, David Suzuki takes us on a journey around the world and shares with us the intimate knowledge that idigenous tribes still have about the natural world they live in. Most of us live in cities and have all but lost our 'link' to the earth; this book makes me want to fight to get it back.
beautifully written and inspiring.......2000-05-25
A beautiful synthesis of native ecological knowledge and western scientific insights. Suzuki and Knudtson call for a new way of relating to nature by combining the "ways of knowing" of the indiginous and western mind. It is not only beautiful to read but incredibly important to our time. Highly recommended.
An OK book but largely a rehash of existing material.......1999-02-19
David is a sincere man and his TV series The Nature of Things broke ground in many areas. This book is well written but is mainly a collection a material from other sources pointing out that native peoples have had much more experience dealing with nature than science has. Many good points but does not draw strong philophical directions for those seeking to apply the illustrations to daily life.

Book Description
Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry is designed to introduce veterinary practitioners to the diagnosis and treatment of disease in captive amphibians. Although designed for the veterinary clinician, this text is an essential part of any herpetologist's library, covering various aspects of amphibian captive husbandry and propagation while providing a firm foundation that enables the reader to evaluate a given husbandry routine. The diagnosis of disease in amphibians by the application of basic clinicopathologic techniques is discussed. Infectious, metabolic, nutritional, neoplastic, and idiopathic disorders of amphibians are examined in detail. Fully illustrated, this volume contains 243 color pictures, 317 black and white figures, and 54 tables that enhance the usefulness of the text and will be of interest to zoos and aquariums with amphibian displays as well as to libraries.
Customer Reviews:
A must book for any enthusiasts on amphibians captive care.......2007-08-01
A must book for any enthusiasts or veterinarian. It is the first serious book on amphibians medicine. It also covers some interesting chapters on captive care and rearing.
Medical degree needed!.......2007-05-27
I bought this book when I had a sick newt on my hands and wanted to get some deeper insights as to what may be wrong. Even the vets I took my pet to were mostly unable to help much, so I tried to take matters into my own hands, at least this way when I went to the vet, I'd be able to bring some ideas and understandings to the table. Let me add that I am a science teacher, so I am no dummy with respect to scientific understanding, but my background is NOT in biology, which is what's essential in the understanding of this book. Also, the book is not meant for "lay people", such as myself, but rather veterinary or medical students. Now I see why. The book was very expensive, which I didn't mind if it had helped, and very difficult to underdstand. The book had very little information with respect to newts in general and rather focused on other amphibians such as frogs. There were very few pictures or chapters/paragraphs even devoted to newts. I wish there had been a copy of the book in a library for me to check out beforehand, as I would not have purchased the book if I did. I'm sure for a vet student the book is probably wonderful, but for someone with no biology background trying to search for some specific answers, it fell way short.
An invaluable title for veterinarians.......2001-12-13
Kevin Wright and Brent Whitaker's Amphibian Medicine And Captive Husbandry is a comprehensive, in-depth, scholarly reference manual designed to introduce and assist veterinary practitioners in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in captive amphibians. However, it also serves as an invaluable, core addition to the library of any herpetologist, breeder or pet owner of an amphibian, for it extensively covers numerous details of the care, feeding, and reproduction of captive amphibians, as well as disease diagnosis, basic clinical techniques for treatment. The many diseases discussed include sicknesses that are infectious, metabolic, nutritional, neoplastic, and idiopathic. 243 color pictures, 317 black and white pictures, and 54 tables greatly enhance the meticulous and highly precise text of this exhaustively complete reference. An invaluable title for veterinarians and/or owners of amphibians.
Comments from co-editor Dr. Kevin Wright.......2001-10-17
Hello, I am Dr. Kevin Wright, co-editor of Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry. Given the global decline of amphibian populations noted at the end of the 20th century, Dr. Whitaker and I designed Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry to introduce the diagnosis and treatment of disease in amphibians to a wide range of audiences. Although our primary intent was to provide a practical but thorough text for the veterinary clinician, we believe this book will be an essential part of any biologist's library; the topics covered range from amphibian captive husbandry and propagation to the diagnosis of disease in amphibians by the application of basic clinicopathologic techniques. Topics are arranged by etiology. The pathology section is highly detailed and provides the only overview of amphibian pathology published.
Recognizing that the understanding of veterinary medicine is facilitated by illustrations, Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry includes 243 color pictures, 317 black and white figures, and 54 tables.
We highly recommend this book to any individual, institution or organization that works with captive or wild amphibians: veterinary clinicians, comparative pathologists, veterinary students, herpetologists, herpetoculturists, zoos, aquariums, biomedical research facilities, and libraries.

Book Description
In Crossing the Next Meridian, Charles F. Wilkinson, an expert on federal public lands, Native American issues, and the West's arcane water laws explains some of the core problems facing the American West now and in the years to come. He examines the outmoded ideas that pervade land use and resource allocation and argues that significant reform of Western law is needed to combat desertification and environmental decline, and to heal splintered communities.
Interweaving legal history with examples of preset-day consequences of the laws, both intended and unintended, Wilkinson traces the origins and development of the laws and regulations that govern mining, ranching, forestry, and water use. He relates stories of Westerners who face these issues on a day-to-day basis, and discusses what can and should be done to bring government policies in line with the reality of twentieth-century American life.
Customer Reviews:
Should be required reading in high school.......2003-08-12
Great and informative book. Puts a lot of the problems now faced in the west into their context. Covers a lot of land history in the west not generally covered in school, but definately not a dry read!
Excellent and thought provoking.......1999-12-01
An excellent rendition of how western law had transformend the American West into a land for humans, filled with dam after dam. Wild salmon have no where to go. Laws seem to be more powerful than Nature!
Excellent, thought-provoking.......1999-05-03
A very scholarly, but accessible, history of the development of the West and the social/political/economic structures that shaped land, water and resource rights there. In particular, Wilkinson is addressing the notorious Hardrock Mining Act of 1872 (still in effect), the distribution of land and grazing rights, the fisheries of the Pacific Northwest, and the timber industry. His analysis of the Lords of Yesterday - his term for the antiquated statutes that govern those industries - is very convincing. The book's only weakness is that this is a 1992 text (presumably researched in the decade previous) that doesn't reflect changes in the laws and political pressures over the past decade. It would benefit from a new edition.
Links the past, present, and future of the American West.......1999-03-05
Wilkinson offers a balanced account of the forces that created the law and policy of the American West, and also of the forces that keep those outdated policies active in a very different West. As a native of Colorado, it was apparent that Wilkenson has spent a great deal of time in the American West and truly understands the complex issues that the region faces today. Very well researched, very easy to read.
A great summury of Western Issues.......1997-12-17
A very though look at the major issues dividing westerners today. Looks at ranching, water, and logging in a very readable style. Do not loan this one out because it NEVER get returned. The only downfall is that this book is already dated because of the rise of the Wise Use movement.

Customer Reviews:
several species offer theraputic effects on humans.......2007-02-12
Seeing eye dogs for the blind are the best known example of animal assisted therapy. But this book describes several other cases, that are perhaps not so familiar. Like the theraputic effect on humans of watching a fish tank. Or interacting with chimpanzees. Or, in some instances, with snakes. The book describes how for many people, there is a stress reduction effect of touching these animals.
Other aspects covered in the book include listing stress signs in dogs or cats. As possible warnings that they might not be useful as companions. Another topic is the difference between a child and an adult having a pet companion.
The book is a good guide for those health care professionals seeking to match animals with humans.
Animal Assisted Therapy.......2006-11-13
I found it to be a helpful resource. I will probably refer back to it as I continue learning about animal assisted therapy.
Credible, clinical but enjoyable-A Keeper.......2002-06-26
This tome features a number of various case study articles on different subjects pertaing to not only animal-assisted therapy, but also to service animals (there is a significant difference). One area (service animals)is for disabled individuals who have an animal-usually a dog-to assist them. The other area is for those interested in Biophilia, how clients benefit from exposure to animals from a therapeutic stance, where handlers bring their animals into long-term facilities, and the like.
I enjoyed this book so much I loaned my copy to a psychiatrist at a neighboring mental health clinc that I know who was conducting a group. She wanted to talk to them about the benefits of service animals for those with mental and emotional disorders, but didn't have the background on the subject. This book was indispensible for her. I plan to add more volumes like it to my library.
Worth the Money.......2002-03-04
This book contains bonafide information to help AAT professionals in everything from forming a practice, zoonotic disease charts, guidelines for AAT in a variety of settings (hospitals, schools etc.), and with a variety of clients to Nature therapy and animal abuse issues.
Additionally, it offers information on assessment tools that can be applied to research in this area. It explains different statistical methods and how to use them.
This book is a 'must have' reference. It is encouraging to see good literature emerging in this field. As a practitioner in this area, I am encouraged by works like this.
Extremely informative.......2002-01-26
The Hanbook on Animal-Assisted Therapy is a useful resource on the topic of anthrozoology and animal-assisted therapy. The sections of the book are written by many of the most prominant researchers in the field. The book is interesting, as well as informative.

This book is very comprehensive. There are enough "lessons" to
get the beginning instructor and the beginning-intermediate rider through a geat year of riding and teaching.
An excellant book!.......1999-11-21
This is an excellant book for anyone practicing for shows or just wanting to improve their riding skills. It has patterns for beginning, intermediate, and advanced riders. It also explains how to work the patterns. I strongly recommend it.
Product Description
300 pages, hardcover. By Takashi Amano. Learn to set up tanks and decorate them according to precepts laid down by Nature herself. Beautiful photos capture the artistry of each tank, and all necessary technical information for duplication is provided.
Customer Reviews:
Book 3 (Nature Aquarium World.......2007-05-31
This really is a fantastic book. Try to understand the Japanese culture and you'll understand the way mr. Takashi Amano disigns his aquariums.
The use of simplicity is amazing but not easy to realize. For every aquarist is the whole serie 1,2,3 a must. Fantastic. Good written and very nice taken photos as well.
If you love the first two you will love this one too!.......2007-01-19
the first two books were great with my personal fave being Nature Aquarium World 1 but this one was beautifully designed and illistrated. Not only are the illistrations wounderful but the "about takashi" section of the book made for some brief and enlighting reading.
Beautiful pictures but horrible for information.......2003-02-10
I got this book and I was suprized to find out that it had very little information whatsoever as to how his tanks were set up and the techniques he uses. I would not recommend this book for anything other then something nice to look at and wish that you hand the time to put into making your own tanks look like that.
Obviously part III.......2002-05-29
Important to note this is part III in the series. If you own part one, this is a nice addition. If you don't own part one, get it first. It's the best of Amano's photo books. Yes, these are well photographed coffee table books, not manuals to "do it yourself," although they do give you a lot of good info to work with.
The plant names don't correspond with Western plant names. You'll have to ID things yourself based on the photographs.
A great book of inspiration once you know the essentials of aquatic plantscaping & fishkeeping.
Amano's tanks are a living work of art. If you're already into freshwater planted fishtanks, get this book! After you've bought book one, Nature Aquarium World, of course
Nature Aquarium World : Book 3.......2000-02-07
Its important to note that this book is a series of photographs. There is not very much information to read except how the author looks after the tanks. The photographs are awe inspiring and its worth a place on anyone's bookshelf. The author works WITH nature to set up these tanks and the results are stunning.

Customer Reviews:
Medicine info in an original manner.......2007-01-04
As a french DVM, I looked for a book in internal medicine with a text in "bullets point".
This book offers an original manner to stucturate the medical informations.
You can access more quickly to the info you want
A tough choice to make.......2000-11-15
The right answer to the dumb question "If you could buy only 1 book . . .?" should be "I wouldn't be a vet!" Choosing a comprehensive Small Animal Practice book, however, comes to only 2 alternatives: either Birchard & Sherding's or Morgan's. I am not considering excellent Internal Medicine texts (like Ettinger or Nelson & Couto) because, by design, they leave out important areas of the practice. Which one would you choose, then? I have a slight preference for Birchard & Sherding's (which could be influenced by the fact that I worked in the same school as them for 20 years!). Morgan's outline format occasionally is too restrictive and prevents full explanation of important concepts but it is a great text and a few chapters (like the one on Central Nervous System) are truly exceptional. Each text has its own chracteristics and strongest areas but both are outstanding. What do you do then? Do as I did; buy both! It is a bit more expensive but you will be sure that you have the very best that has been written in small animal practice. I have had no reason to repent.
This is the Bible for the S.A. clinician.......1997-11-30
To make a long story short, if somebody tells me that I have to pick just ONE book to run a small animal practice, I would pick this one.
This book discuss 95% of the clinical cases you will find in real life and it's written in such a way, that you find the answer you need in a couple of minutes.
