Dr Pitcairns natural health.......2007-10-05
This is absolutely a must book. Giving dogs prescribed medications often involves side affects which shorten their lives. Being able to find out about natural products that can help them is great. It can not only lenghten their lives, but also cost less in the long run. I highly reccomend this book to all dog owners.
great resource.......2007-10-01
this is a great resource book. It has lots of background info on dog foods and so much info on great supplements. It could be made easier with breakdowns or charts to guide you for quicker reference, because I find myself having to flip back and forth a lot. There is definitely lots of info and it has to be read more than once. I think the recipes are sound and easy to make. Although I can't cook for my dogs all the time, at least I can do it whenever they are ill or recovering from some ailment or surgery to ensure that their bodies are strong when they need to heal. This book makes it manageable to do that.
A great resource.......2007-09-23
This book is a great resource for pet owners. I find the health-care section of the book very useful. I have modified the recipes to accomodate the inherited allery issues my dog has. Modifying the recipes is a very involved process as the substituion of products recommended and appropriate amounts required for balanced nutrition can be a hassle to figure out, especially, if one's pet was allergic to multiple products.
This is a great book for pet owners who want to try homemade cooking and alternative medicine for their pets.
Excellent overall but diet not suited for all .......2007-09-01
There is more than one way to feed a healthy, non-commercial diet. I recommend buying both Dr. Pitcairn's book and Andi Brown's book, The Whole Piet Diet, to see which diet your animal(s) prefer. I have three pets, two 13-yr. old cats and one 1 1/2-yr old terrier. The cats had been eating holistic Blue Buffalo dry food along with some canned Friskies. The terrier was eating holistic Blue Buffalo dry food along with some raw meat, veggies, yogurt, etc. I recently learned that dry food is difficult for pets to digest and is terribly drying and causes digestive problems like vomiting, dandruff, etc. The Friskies is just plain junk food so I decided that I was going to feed healthier fare and bought both books (Dr. Pitcairn wrote the foreword in Andi's book). While Dr. Pitcairn promotes primarily raw meats with cooked whole grains, Andi Brown promotes cooked stews (grains included for dogs only, not cats). After experimentation, I found that my dog and one cat prefer Dr. Pitcairn's recipes and my second cat prefers Spot's Stew (from Andi's book). When I made the switch, I only started feeding the recipes without supplements to the cats. It took 15 days for them to eat consistently, then I started adding the supplements in small amounts and gradually built up to the daily recommended amounts. Tip: my cats preferred Andi's supplements over Dr. Pitcairn's (especially the essential fatty acids in the form of oils). All of my pets are doing very well on the diets but only because I was persistent in finding what worked best for each pet. I will never feed dry food again!
It's a shame..........2007-08-29
...that an obviously experienced and well researched vetrinarian would recommend a diet that includes grain as one of the staples of the diet. Anyone who does even a minor amount of research about the special diet needs of a dog would easily find that dogs do not possess the proper enzymes to break down grain properly and can lead to either minor or serious allergic reactions. Dogs should not eat any type of grain at any time. Anyone who reads this book, do not take it as gospel. Please do more in-depth research before you make any solid decisions on your dogs diet.
Besides that fault, there are only a few recipies included in this rather long book. I heard very good things about this book before I bought it and was thoroughly disappointed after I read it. Its hard to give this book anything else but a negative review.

Simple but complete recipes.......2007-07-25
This book is easy to read and simple to use, but has all the good information you need to cook for your dog. They even break up the recipes based on the weight of your dog so you don't have to figure it out yourself. There is a basic nutrition breakdown for each recipe. Once you know what you're doing, you'll probably want to get some more complicated books about canine nutrition to start making up your own recipes; but this is a great book to get you started.
Great book!.......2007-07-18
This book is my first cooking book for my dog. My dog(2yrs.) had been so picky what he eats. I tried many different brand of dog foods, can foods and frozen raw food. He doesn't care about kibbles... He eats kibbles one cup in 2 days for staying alive.(he was 10-15 lb. under weight) He eats can food IF there is whole chiken thigh, or ...some whole thing. He doesn't like mushy can food.) Frozen raw food... he has sensitive stomach. If its still too cold, he will throw up) I know he likes can food, but I didn't want to keep feeding him can food because I don't believe they have enough nutrients. I start thinking about cooking for him. I don't know why I bought this book, but I feel lucky. This book is really easy to read and easy to understand. There are 4 recipes for different weighs(5,10,15,20,25,....50,60,70,....150 lb.) One is basic recipe, other 3 are gourmet recipes. Hard part for me was to find vitamin and mineral supplement. I didn't understand what I was looking for in the supplement.Other than that, it is easy to make and most importantly, my dog LOVEs his food now. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a recipe book for dogs.

Not that useful.......2007-06-17
Many people swear by this book, but I don't find it that essential. Most of the information was not especially useful or was common knowledge. Mainly I disagree with Pitcairn's use of grains in a dogs diet. Instead, I recommend New Choices in Natural Healing Dogs & Cats and The Nature of Animal Healing.
Hesitating to purchase this book.......2007-04-30
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a forum for questions that can be asked concerning Dr. Pitcairn's latest edition of his book, so I am
hesitating to purchase it. I own the 1982 edition and wonder if it has been updated as far as recommendations of diet- specifically foods that have been deemed dangerous to dogs and cats- as one reviewer mentioned, raisins. I have recently heard of onions and garlic included as dangerous foods for dogs and cats, and Dr. Pitcairn's earlier book is laced with encouragement for feeding them to our pets. As someone who is severely allergic to onions myself, I have learned that they lurk in MANY places and in various forms. Onion powder is just as detrimental for me as raw onion, and is found in chili powder and many other spice combinations, soy sauce, ketchup, mayonnaise, chicken broth, vegetable broths, bouillon, tomato sauce, even canned beans, especially the organic varieties. I avoid feeding anything that might contain these to my dogs. I wonder if the revised edition of Dr. Pitcairn's book includes cautions about feeding onions and garlic to pets? Since I cannot find an answer to my question without purchasing the book, I will continue to hesitate to do so.
The best book to improve your pets health and keep them healthy!.......2006-04-05
I can't praise this book enough. It has literally saved me hundreds of dollars in pet care costs and more importantly saved at least one of my pets' life. I've owned my copy for at least eight years. I have a Weimaraner with allergies which this book has kept her allergy free without the prescriptions recommended by the vet.
More recently I had a cat with a blocked urethra, common in male cats, which can also lead to a rapid and painful death if they are completely blocked. The emergency vet wanted $1500 to catheter and care for the cat for two days with antibiotics etc. I opted to have them do the catheter ($300) and took him home to care for him. I followed the books instructions. He did great right away by giving him the vitamins the book suggests and the prescription food the vet suggested. But after two weeks of being 100% well he started to have blood in his urine again, the first sign of the problem. Then I realized that I had slacked off on the vitamins the book suggests, (vitamin C, and some others). I had mistakenly assumed the "prescription" food would be good enough. I immediately gave him the books homeopathic remedy followed by the books recommended vitamins and their "Healthy Powder" (recipe in the book) and his problem cleared up the next day and he has had no signs of any problem since. He is in the best health he's ever known! And I'm being smarter about his needs.
If you care about your pets, believe in their own abilities to heal, and natural and holistic approaches to pet health, this book is the best; it's the one I go to first to find the answers to my pet's problems.
Inaccurate advice and some expensive suggestions.......2006-03-03
I read this book hoping to find another way to try and treat my dogs skin problems and with the interest to start feeding him more rare food (less kibble).
However this book tends toward more of an extreme view STRONGLY recommending only feeding your pet human organic food and bottled water (i love my dog but if I dont drink bottled water and eat organic food he doesnt need to). There were 3 "booster mix" recipes to add to a kibble diet that were okay.
The recipes seem expensive, especially if you have large dogs, but the ingredients are broken down and ordered by cost per protein gram on a handy chart.
The biggest flaws were the suggestions that we just inaccurate. For instance recommending dried fruits such raisins, when in fact raisins, like chocolate, grapes, and alcohol are toxic to dogs. PLEASE DONT FEED THOSE TO YOUR DOGS!!!! Inaccuracies like that make me question the validity of the rest of the book. I would recommend double checking any advice from this book before following it.
One of the best.......2006-02-05
This is one of the best books on the market that cover natural care and feeding of dogs and cats. It includes balanced recipes complete with easy to make supplements, and a wealth of information on how to care for all sorts of issues and problems the natural way. I strongly recommend having a copy of this book on the shelf for any pet owner.
I have owned two copies of Dr Pitcairn's book ... both the first release, which I simply wore out and, when it was re-released in the new edition, I bought a copy of that as well.
If you're considering purchasing this book, don't hesitate any longer. You won't regret it.

The Whelping and Rearing of Puppies: A Complete and Practical Guide.......2007-08-15
Being a first time breeder; this book was FANTASTIC!! Was extremely practical & helped to have on hand to look at as a reference. I recommend this book to any one like me, a first time breeder. Out of the 2 books I purchased, this was the BEST!! 2 thumbs up..

I am a first time breeder, and I bought a few whelping books to help me out.
I have to say this is the best book I have read on the subject.
It is very detailed and helps you plan on what may happen.
I would recommend this to anyone who is thinking about breeding there dog.
Fast Service.......2007-05-13
The company provided fast service. The book has been educational and we will be able to use the practical information when we finally start breeding our Danes.
survived 12 puppies!.......2007-04-12
This is an excellent book. Simple, to the point, and in layman's terms that can be easily understood. I am a veterinarian and I've had a lot of personal experience whelping and rearing puppies. But it was wonderful to have this book to turn to while raising my most recent litter of 12 puppies. It was reassuring to verify what I was doing correctly and helpful to be reminded of things that I should be doing.
New to whelping? This is very practical advice........2007-02-19
I work rescue and never had puppies born in my home before last September.
This book covers it all, and is easy and clear to understand.

Hands down, the best foaling attendant book.......2007-07-22
As far as I'm concerned, this book is required reading for all foaling attendants. Thank you Dr. Karen Hayes for writing it. The book covers a single topic, and does it better than any of the other foaling guides I've read (and I've read quite a few). Those other foaling guides are on a bookshelf; this is the book that goes in the foaling kit! It has saved our farm from disaster on more than one occasion. Dr. Hayes clearly, calmly and concisely communicates the important facts and techniques the foaling attendant needs to know. The detailed diagrams make all the difference in illuminating exactly what is going on at each stage of parturition. Detailed descriptions of what's normal and what's not, techniques for resolving problems before they become critical, and advice on what to attempt yourself and when to call the vet are invaluable. You will find other fine books about breeding, mare care and foal care, but this is the best book on the actual process of protecting and caring for your mare when it's time to deliver her foal. Dr. Hayes' more general horse care [...].is also highly recommended.
Good information, but..........2007-05-15
I would like to have more information regarding what to do next. The information was good, and the illustrations are helpful, but I needed to buy another book to help with what to do with the foal once it had arrived.
Great Book....Answered lots of questions.......2007-03-26
This book was shipped quickly and just in time....I had about 5 reading days before my first foal was born. I highly recommend this book to all breeders.
The Complete Book Of Foaling.......2007-02-11
Very informative book~! I have been foaling out mares for over 12 years and I learned quite a bit of information that I did not already realize~! An A+ book to have on hand~!
A gift for my Father.......2007-02-08
My Father liked the book very much. Could not stop reading it. He is buying a copy for my brother who actually does the foaling at the horse farm.

Great overview of what can be done for your horse........2007-06-08
This book serves as a wonderful reference for the health of my equines. It gives very descriptive things that can be done. Recently when my warmblood foundered, I found the suggestions very helpful and empowering. I got to implement some of them right away and therefore made my girl more comfortable in this hard situation. I highly recommend this book as it takes the mystery out of many different approaches of equine care and gives one the opportunity to make informed, well thought out choices.
Happy for the paperback.......2007-01-21
I own the hardback edition of this book and am very pleased the paperback edition has arrived. Sent it to a good friend looking for the pressure points of the horse, which Mary does a great job of showing in the sketches provided. This is the best alternative medicine book I have found for the horse.
Great.......2007-01-09
I bought this book for my girlfriend and she said that if she didn't have it she never would have passed some of her college classes last quarter.
Thank God for this book!!.......2003-02-15
As I am coming into more holistic approaches to life, I have found this book to be a Bible!! As it covers so many topics, giving guidance to directions for all of us, I can easily understand the value of this book!! Amust for all readers who want to keep their Equine healthy and sound --Naturally!!
Complete Holistic Care.... Brennan/Eckroate: a review.......2001-09-23
This comprehensive volume addresses dozens of concerns for the horse owner, covering traditional and alternative health practices. The book is very complete in covering the health care options in two sections. The first part dealing with health care is an overview of traditional and holistic options. The final section of the volume is a comprehensive listing (with photos) of typical horse ailments with specific recommendations for each one. The entire book is written in a style easily understandable by the novice, but not too simplistic for the experienced horse owner. Photos and very complete appendices round out the coverage for this topic. Additionally, Brennan includes a comprehensive horse management section which is equally impressive in its scope, covering topics such as diet, grooming, tack and trailering. This book is truly a "must have" for the concerned horse owner.

With 250 color photographs, Rhacodactylus is the most complete photographic and husbandry reference on crested geckos, gargoyle geckos, giant geckos, and other members of the genus. The three authors were pioneers in establishing these popular lizards in U.S. herpetoculture
Customer Reviews:
Very Interesting and great knowledge..........2007-06-29
This book is a description in very specific details of the rhacodactylus family. I find it very important to know where these animals come from, how to maintain them in the most naturalistic way possible, etc. This book is a must need for Rhacodactylus keepers!
5 big thumbs up!
The Definitive Work.......2006-07-05
The nature of human beings is to explore, to examine, and to try to understand everything around us. This book benefits our instinctual search for information about the natural ecosystems around us. It provides us with an insight into the world of some of the rarest and most beautiful creatures in the world and lays bare the world in which they live. Anyone who has an interest in herpetology or is simply hoping to delve into the amazing world of reptile study can gain so much from this book and from Phillipe De Vosjoli's other outstanding and contemplative works.
Best Rhacodactylus Book in print.......2005-08-16
This is by far the best book in print on Rhac's. It covers Crested, Gargoyle, Chahoua, and the Giant Leachianus Geckos among others. It has sections on all aspects of careing for them including breeding. Many helpful photos to demonstrate the various color and structure morphs (especially of the Crested Geckos). The only thing that could be added here (maybe in a second edition) is what combinations of different morphs are likely to produce what morphs. Also some info on on temperature sex determination for incubation temps would be helpful in the future after more research is done in this area. The Authors all have plenty of first hand experience and some of the largest collections of these geckos in the world. All in all, the best book available on Rhac's at this time.
a must have for any rhacodatylus owner!!.......2003-12-13
This book is excellant! The text is thorough, and the illustrations are phenomenal. There is virtually no stone left unturned. Every question concerning the husbandry and natural history of rhacodactylus is explored and explained. The authors attention to detail is unmatched. This book is a must have for any person whom wants to own, or already owns any species of rhacodactylus, novice and expert alike.
If you have ANY interest in Rhacodactylus, get this book!.......2003-12-12
This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone interested in this amazing group of geckos. Rhacodactylus are a small group of geckos that are found only on the island of New Caledonia, that lies roughly between Australia, New Guinea and New Zealand. For such a small group, these geckos occur in a diverse array of beautiful and often bizarre forms. One member of this genus, Rhacodactylus leachianus, holds the distinction of being the largest living species of gecko in the world, reaching a total length of up to 17 inches and weighing nearly a pound!
I have been keeping reptiles for 30+ years. I can remember back when the only readily available books on reptile or amphibian care had lots of pretty (or sometimes not so pretty and often mislabeled) pictures, but little useful information on the natural history or husbandry of these animals. Worse yet, what little information was there was frequently just plain wrong! Those of us who were really dedicated to the hobby had to go to university libraries and search out obscure zoo and animal care journals to gain insight on how to keep our animals healthy, happy and reproducing.
That all changed when Philippe de Vosjoli introduced his Advanced Vivarium Systems "Care and Maintenence" series of books that emphasized good, solid husbandry information, based on years of research by the top experts in the field. Many of these he authored or co-authored himself along with some of the other top reptile and amphibian keepers in the world. The goal of these books was to make good, solid information on proper care of reptiles and amphibians readily available, both to long time keepers and people just starting out in the hobby.
This latest work by he and his co-authors, Frank Fast and Allen Repashy, is one of his best and most ambitious works yet. In addition to the main authors, the information in this book has been compiled from many of the other top gecko keepers/breeders in the the U.S. and Europe. The book covers all six species and 2 subspecies of Rhacodactylus, giving descriptions of each, and excellent information on all aspects of their husbandry and breeding. Everything from nutrition, caging, breeding and much more are covered in great detail. In addition, the book contains some of the latest information on the habitat and ecology of these animals, along with numerous beautiful pictures of the different forms and color morphs of the geckos and their habitats.
This book is also an excellent companion volume for anyone lucky enough to own the now out of print Rhacodactylus - Biology, Natural History and Husbandry by Robert Seipp and Friedrich Wilhelm Henkel. The new book updates and greatly expands on much of the information presented in the earlier book.
I would highly recommend Rhacodactylus: The Complete Guide to their Selection and Care to not only those of us that work with, or want to work with these animals, but also to anyone who just wants to know more about these beautiful and amazing creatures.

Pot Belly Pig book.......2007-09-29
Wonderful book. Helped quite a bit. Only problem is the binding fell apart and the pages were all loose. Most likely a problem with who ever is paid to glue the book together. I needed the book or I wouldve returned it.
All you need to know!!.......2005-10-11
This book has the answer to any question that you are ever likely to have regarding the well being of a Potbellied Pig.
A Must Read for all Pet Pig Owners.......2001-06-04
Kathleen really did it right with this book! It is a great source of everything you'll need to know about pet pigs and their mental and physical health. If you have a pet pig, you MUST have this book.
A Must-Have for Pig Owners.......2001-04-13
As the two-legged mom of 3 potbelly pigs, the oldest of which is now 10, I find this book a wonderful wealth of information that every care-giver of pet pigs should have on hand. Laid out in a very easy to use format, this book will take you from the history of where potbellied pigs came from; help you decide if a pet pig is right for your family (as they are not for just anyone); and then moves on into what to look for when choosing a pet pig; how be be prepared for it's homecoming and the proper living environment required for these special little pigs; the medical need-to-know information that is specific to pet pigs; along with various other chapters which will put you and your companion pig on the road to a happy, healthy and long relationship. Information on pet pigs and their care is sparse at best. This valuable text helps fill that void in the pet pig market and I promise you'll have many pages dog-earred or marked with post-its by the time you're done reading it. No pet pig home should be without The Complete Guide for the Care and Training of Pet Potbellied Pigs.
The Truth About Pigs....or Pigs Can Be Pets too!!.......2001-02-24
If you want to know the truth about the potbellied pigs stop right now and purchase your very own copy of the book "The Complete Guide for the Care and Training of Pot Potbellied Pigs" by Kathleen Myers. The title to the book unquestionably describes its content. You may think pigs are not for me; or, I know all there is to know. You cannot be any further from the truth. Before reading this book I knew very little about the potbellied pig. After reading this short but comprehensive book I feel confident in selecting and raising a potbelly as a pet. The author takes the novice as well as the expert step by step through the practice of owning the potbellied pig. Did you know you can actually house-break a potbellied pig?
For those needing additional assistance understanding their pet the book answers those questions, as well. Kathleen Myers even lists all plants which are toxic to potbellied pigs. She includes a comprehensive resource list with phone numbers and web sites all potbellied pig owners need at their fingertips. Topics on the list include animal care, best feed for your pet, training videos, and numerous other online resources.
Whether you are a novice or enjoy potbellied pigs in your daily life, "The Complete Guide for the Care and Training of Potbellied Pigs" should be by your side. There is no other guide as complete as this one. It will be a constant reference resource for the Potbellied Pig pet owner.

It was very helpful and helped in answering the usual questions that you might be too embarrassed to ask =D It also was good because it had many pictures that aided as well.
The Whole Horse Catalog: The Complete Guide to Buying, Stabling and Stable Management, Equine Health, Tack, Rider Apparel, Eques.......2007-03-09
Great book
No color pictures.......2006-12-08
I just received this book. I find it quite outdated. The drawings and illustrations are poorly done. There are only a few black and white pictures. Just beware that this is a 1998 book and I am sure you can find a more updated horse book than this one.
Absolute must for new horse-lovers!.......2006-10-05
If you're considering doing ANYTHING with a horse in it, get this book. It's by far the most complete book on basic horse health, stabling, activities, breeds, etc. (And I do mean "basic".) Would have been five-stars for a glossary.
Horsey Lovers.......2006-07-22
My daughter wants us to buy her a horse. We didn't have a clue what to look for and this horse catalog gave us a thorough preview. We didn't fathom the expenses or the responsibilities of caring for a horse. An encyclopedic eyeopener that prepared us for reality.

The Complete Book Of Finches And Softbills.......2003-10-24
This book does not cover the different types of finches & softbills. It is very general information only, on breeding and care of finches & softbills, no help to the person wanting more specific info. on the different types of finches and their care.
More info. than the average bird owner even wants........2003-08-08
I think this is a very good, detailed book for someone new to finches & softbills. At times, it flips back & forth between finches & softbills in a paragraph, which can be confusing for a novice, but it's easy to figure out. It has enough nice pictures to give a good overview of many species, but is not a "picture book" - it is for someone who is serious about the birds and their care. Early on it has a section of compatability which is useful and neccessary. It has a lot of details on aviary housing (many finch books do), and bird rooms, which isn't useful to the average home/apt. bird owner, but more information is better than too little. It is definitely a good resource book.
Great alround General Care Book!!.......2003-06-17
