2 out of 5 stars Basically just the scripts -- not what I expected........2007-09-19

Just to let future buyers be aware....this book (and Vol. 1) are basically just the scripts to the (REALLY FUN) shows. As my husband put it, "It's just the lines, without the wonderful delivery the actors achieved in the shows." I thought it would be more like the various other "about" books that exist about popular movies/TV shows - full of pictures and other fun "about" stuff. In my opinion, these two books were not that.

5 out of 5 stars What a hoot! Get this if you just "liked" Firefly.......2007-09-09

I missed Firefly, the first time around, and didn't discover the series until after I'd rented Serenity. I can't call myself a confirmed browncoat, though I really *really* liked everything about the show.

But when I saw this book on the library's New Books stack, I grabbed it. I think you should grab a copy, too, even if you're no die-hard fan. Because this book is _fun_.

Most of the book is episode scripts (half of them; the other half are in Volume One). That's worth the price alone, because the scripts are immensely readable. Like other intelligent shows, the dialogue is both fast and thoughtful, and you might not have caught everything when you heard it the first or second time around. In particular, the scripts include the translations from the Chinese expletives, and most of them are _very_ funny.

And the "stage direction" is not the dispassionate descriptive sort ("Man enters, wearing a hat"). It reflects the entire mood of the show:
INARA walks towards them, heading for the stairs up to the shuttle catwalk. She's dressed with stunning elegance.
KAYLEE: Hey there, 'Nara. Heading off for some glamorous romance?
Simon turns, momentarily stunned by her elegance.

If you're a screenwriter, this is absolutely a must-have.

The book is also peppered with cast interviews, stories about the creation of Firefly's theme song, production explanations on how, for example, they created Niska's Skyplex. In this book, you can spend an enjoyable few hours investigating how a show can be done *right*...even if the network screwed it up.

5 out of 5 stars Shiny!.......2007-08-23

This is the follow-up and completion of companion books to the cancelled-but-still-growing-its-fanbase Firefly television series. It provides the shooting scripts ans photo stills from the remaining episodes, as well as numerous sidebars featuring backstories and insights into the actors, crew, props, and the inner thoughts of series' creator, Joss Whedon. This glossy volume is heavily laden with color photographs, costume concept designs for the various characters, and pre-production sketches. If you have a love for the series and the Big Damn Movie ("Serenity"), you will feel compelled to buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Companion.......2007-08-14

For anyone charmed by the short-lived Firefly series, this book is simply great. Besides having the screenplays of the programs in the second half of the series, it is full of pictures, interviews, storyboards, and various tidbits relating to the series. If there is a school for Browncoats, this should be required reading.

5 out of 5 stars Shiny........2007-08-13

Please, what's not to like here? Just the fact that it needs more seasons of episodes to include...

And when the rest of my geek friends come over for dinner and drinks we always have something to talk about.

Absolutly everything about Firefly that you could possibly want Transcripts of all the episodes and explanations of other things like "What the heck is 80 platenium in real montitary value" and "How big is the Firefly universe(solar system) exactly?"

All Browncoats should consider getting this.

A must-have for fans (Browncoats) of the Firefly TV series or Serenity movie. Very high quality, glossy publication with lots of great photos, behind the scenes info, interviews, and word-for-word dialog of each episode. Both volume one and volume two are excellent values. They are well designed and made, great graphics.

Great, filled with glossy pictures, interviews and comments from the cast and crew. I didn't think I'd find reading the scripts interesting, but I enjoyed them all. The only omission is a cast and crew listing for each episode.
I ended up wanting more, so I guess I'll have to buy volume 2, and Jane Espenson's book and...

Wow.

You might think that you're set with just the Serenity Visual Companion - but you're not. This is a necessary read for any true Browncoat. Visuals on weapons, script excerpts, pictures of Alliance money (which are different from the ones in the Serenity RPG book or the Serenity Visual Companion). The costume designs for Inara are explored, too!

If you enjoyed the show, you'll love this book.

5 out of 5 stars A child's view of fireflies........2006-11-06

Nothing can match the wonder of a night filled with tiny lights of the firefly. This book takes me back to the child's delight in catching them, trying to make the wonder last. But, I, too, let them go in the end. Pass it on.

5 out of 5 stars Touching.......2005-11-14

I love this book! It has a simple, beautiful message. It brings tears to my own eyes every time I read it. I use this book to teach my 7th graders to write a critique. The illustrations are excellent and add to the magic feeling the descriptive words in the story captures. I am looking forward to reading this with my daughter in a couple of years.

1 out of 5 stars I thought this book was horrible.......2005-10-03

I bought this book online and was not able to see it like I would in a book store. Had I seen it I would never have purchased this book and will never read it to my 6 year old son! It went from suggesting eating your dinner quickly to wiping a dirty jar on your close to cutting holes in a jar lid with scissors quietly so your mom won't catch you. One of the illustrations shows a boy holding scissors wide open with his hand on the inside of the open blades. I would never read it to any child and think the message is just horrible. Yes it is fun to catch fireflys but I know this could have been done better without the dangerous suggestions and disregard for listening to adults and being careful!

5 out of 5 stars great images.......2003-03-12

I read this book to my class of first graders and they loved it! This book is well-written and uses wonderful descriptive words to paint a vivid picture for the kids. They connected to the story and wanted to hear it again!

5 out of 5 stars A Magical Experience.......2002-10-19

I read this story to my three little children. After I did so in a kind of hushed whisper, we all looked at each other like we just discovered a magical place together. My oldest, who is 7, leaned her head back self-consciously, in a kind of surprise, to stop her tears from spilling over. There is so much youthful joy and discovery and poignancy in the story. What a beautiful book, not just in its words, but in the sepia-tone illustrations.I put it on MY wish list for Christmas!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-11-05

You can't be without this book if you have 3-6 year old kids. My girls can't get enough of it. The message is one of encouragement, persistence, and self confidence. Eric Drachman is amazing at what he does. The CD character voices seal the deal. A must have along with all the others: Ellison the Elephant and It's Me. A Frog Thing is his newest release and is maybe more appropriate for slightly older kids i.e. 5 and up.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet story.......2005-10-26

This is a wonderful story for any child who has ever felt left out. Leo is tiny and can't make his light shine. He is teased by the other lightning bugs. His mom tells him to keep trying and he'll succeed. After practicing over and over, he finally figures out how to light his light. The other bugs stop teasing him and he learns to laugh at himself, an important lesson for the younger child. I have a 6 year old and an 8 1/2 year old and they both love this story. The illustrations are wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars My two nephews love this book & CD!.......2005-10-23

This lovely and lively story became an instant favorite of my two young nephews -- which is saying a lot considering that their bookshelf is well stocked! The CD that accompanies the book (making the price a real bargain) is no afterthought -- it is just as rich in detail and as well-produced as the book itself. And having a CD of the book comes in very handy when the boys are in the mood to hear the story AGAIN (and again and again and again...)

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!.......2004-07-09

I have bought this book for my grandchildren and have enjoyed reading it with them. Beautiful illustrations and lots of fun for young children.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2003-10-27

This is simply a must have book for your preschoolers! My two boys, ages 3 and almost 5 LOVE this book. It has a great message - you have to practice to be good at things - and the CD is very well done. You cannot go wrong with this one.

Many of Eric Carle's books begin with a small creature being born just as a great yellow sun rises. This time the hero is a firefly, and the inimitably Carle-ish cut-paper orange-and-yellow sun is setting. The firefly buzzes off in search of companionship, but keeps following other lights by mistake--a candle, a flashlight, a lantern--and these in turn are all leading in the direction of a fireworks display. Finally, the lonely firefly finds the friends it is seeking--a dozen or more other fireflies. This is one of a series of large (11.5 by 8.5 inches) format Carle books with a mechanical twist: in this case, the firefly's new group of friends start to flash (from tiny yellow bulbs embedded in the book) as you turn the last page. (The battery is replaceable.) (Baby to preschool) --Richard Farr

Book Description

One night a very lonely firefly goes off in search of friends. Each time he sees a flicker of light he flies off toward it, but none of them turn out to be fireflies. He sees a lantern, an owl's eyes, even headlights shining in the darkness. Will the lonely firefly ever find creatures like himself?

A classic in its own time, The Very Lonely Firefly is finally available in a beautiful board book format, perfect for the youngest readers and the smallest hands. And just as in the hardcover edition, the fireflies' lights actually light up, delighting children of all ages.

3 out of 5 stars Great book - not so great battery life.......2007-07-03

This is a really cute book, my son loves it. We also have Eric Carle's "Brown Bear Brown Bear" so this is a great addition to his book collection. My son's favorite part of the book is the last page where all the fireflies are shining their lights and the book actually has blinking battery-powered lights. My only complaint is that the battery has already worn out and we've only had the book for about 3 weeks.

i'm sure the battery can be replaced, it just seems like it would have lasted longer.

3 out of 5 stars Good book but..........2007-05-16

My granddaughter and I enjoy reading this book very much, but when I received the book the batteries were dead. The batteries are $3.00 each, and it requires four of them. I paid $15.00 for the book, and so it will cost me almost what the book did to replace them!

5 out of 5 stars Cute!.......2007-05-06

My son and I enjoy many of the Eric Carle books and this one is no exception. Of course he especially likes the end where all the fireflies light up.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT and VERY entertaining.......2007-04-25

My daughter loves this book. The twinkling lights at the end are very entertaining!

5 out of 5 stars Another classic!.......2007-03-08

Eric Carle's books are wonderful! This one is no exception! With few words and vibrant pictures, the reader is captivated with the story from the first page. I love the "little surprise" on the last page! This is one story we read over and over and over...again!

Book Description

Beloved on both sides of the Atlantic, bestselling Irish writer Maeve Binchy has been acclaimed by critics and readers alike for her heartwarming, beautifully crafted takes celebrating Ireland, its people, and the journey of life itself. Now three of her finest, most memorable works have been brought together for the first time in an outstanding collection that shines with the luminescent storytelling that has earned the author international renown.
THE LILAC BUS
Featuring two novellas, The Lilac Bus and Dublin 4, this national bestseller showcases Binchy's talents at their finest. In The Lilac Bus, Binchy masterfully and poignantly interweaves the lives and fates of eight very different individuals who travel from Dublin to the Irish country town of Rathdoon every Friday night in a lilac-colored minibus. In Dublin 4, a quartet of stories vividly portrays the quiet desperation and everyday heroism of ordinary people living ordinary lives in contemporary Ireland.
FIREFLY SUMMER
When American millionaire Patrick O'Neill comes to Mountfern in the fateful summer of 1962 to convert a dilapidated manor house into a luxury hotel, his intrusion turns life in the small Irish village upside down. The ensuing conflict between new money and old traditions, which strains families and friendships to the breaking point, is brilliantly explored in this truly unforgettable family drama that will live in your heart long after the last page is turned.
SILVER WEDDING
Guilty secrets from the past and plaguing fears in the present surface when sons and daughters, sisters and brothers, and friends and lovers reunite to celebrate Desmond and Deirdre Doyle's twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Among the difficulties the Doyles must come to terms with: the daughter struggling to become a nun, the son who prefers the dreary farm in Ireland to life in London, and the enviable successes of their best man and bridesmaid.

5 out of 5 stars Stories of Ireland.......2007-04-05

Binchy clearly loves her homeland of Ireland, and readers will too. This collection of three novels gets an A+!

5 out of 5 stars Three Complete Books ~ Maeve Binchy.......2007-01-04

Maeve Binchy is one of the best authors I have read. I love the fact that she is Irish and writes stories of Ireland. The slow pace makes reading a pleasure. I liked all three books in this, but particularly liked FIREFLY SUMMER. Hopefully, she will have another book on the market soonest.

1 out of 5 stars The lilac bus, firefly summer, silver wedding.......2006-08-17

I was very disappointed with this book. I have read a few of Maeve Binchy's books and loved them. I couldn't put them down. However all the stories in this book just leave you unfulfilled for an ending. I expected 3 complete stories and was very disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Good Gift.......2005-10-21

The publishers get an A+ for putting these books together. I have always read her books as soon as they come out. Now I will buying this as an excellent give for others, so handy for the holidays!

4 out of 5 stars A great collection of stories.......2002-10-08

I liked Maeve Binchy before, but I am even more of a fan after buying this set. Unfortunately because I am such a busy person this book took me just over a year to finish! But I loved every page and would definitely give it a re-read.
The three novels in this book are all distinctly different and, in my view, each deserve their own little mini-review:
THE LILAC BUS - Since I read this a year ago, the finer details are lost on me. But I did like how this novel focuses on so many characters and yet you get to feel like you know each one. And I loved how each character viewed each scene differently. You read one chapter and you see one person's point of view, and then you read the next and you get completely different thoughts on the situation. Only Ms. Binchy could keep tabs on so many characters so skillfully. And all I can say about DUBLIN FOUR is that I had to flip through it a little to remember what it was even about, so obviously it's not as stellar as its counterpart. 4 stars total.
FIREFLY SUMMER - A great book all around. It's easily the longest story of the three (it's almost 500 pages, compared to 200 for The Lilac Bus and 150 for Silver Wedding) but once you get going, you don't even notice the book's length. The characters are so genuine, and you are upset to see them go at the end. The main plot is very thick, and yet you enjoy reading all the little sub-plots that go along with it. I actually cried reading some parts of this book! The book ends as you hope it will but not in the manner that you expect! So will Patrick's hotel succeed? You'll just have to read it and find out! 5 stars.
SILVER WEDDING - is the freshest in my mind because I just finished it. It is similar to The Lilac Bus in that it devotes each chapter to a character. But while The Lilac Bus follows the characters through the same moments of time, each chapter in Silver Wedding is a distinct moment. For instance, when you read about Anna (chapter 1) it is months before the anniversary, but when you read about Deirdre (chapter 8), it's a few weeks before. The more you read, the more you find out about the wedding itself and the people involved. However, I found that although there were plenty of sub-plots to keep the story going, the main plot was not very well developed or interesting (ok, so they're having a party, and Deirdre's the only one who's truly excited... you almost get that from page one, why keep going?). And the characters themselves aren't as "3-dimensional" as they are in Ms. Binchy's other stories. I really expected more, but it still wasn't a waste of time. 3 stars.

I am not wildly excited by this book, as an adult reading it, I find it quite dull. However, I do think it is worth the effort, the language my pre-schoolers have picked up from this book is amazing. It makes a lovely game out of reading and my children really pick up on that.

It is the story of Sam the owl and Gus the naughty firefly. Sam wants to play, but Gus just wants to have fun. First they have a great time, but then Gus goes off to be naughty. He makes trouble for the planes in the sky by writing misdirections with his light, then he writes 'free' outside a cinema. When he makes the Hot dog stand into Cold dosgs, he meets his match. The hotdog man catches Gus and puts him in a jar. However Gus ends up saving the day when he tells a train to stop! and the hotdog mans truck is safe.

The fun which Gus has with writing, and the fun story keeps the children's interest. It really invites discussion about the story, and it also gets them trying to read the words and spell them out. A great book for kids.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite artwork.......2006-08-25

I had this book as a child. It still has my favorite artwork of any of the children's books. The picture of the sleeping world, the hot dog stand, the approaching train with the truck stuck on the tracks are all etched in memory.

Eastman was a formidable children's author. His illustrations for Go Dog Go! and A Fish Out of Water were both marvelous too. And the junked car in Are You My Mother - way spooky, you understand why little bird ran away.

4 out of 5 stars Cute book.......2006-08-03

My son inherited the audiotape of this book when his Kindergarten teacher was cleaning out her room at the end of the school year, so I bought the book to go along with it. We have enjoyed other titles by P.D. Eastman and this was equally pleasing.

1 out of 5 stars Strange and Misogynistic.......2006-07-06

The firefly in this book causes car and airplane crashes, and insults people in bizarre ways. The story is a little demented for a children's book. Also, women are conspicuously absent from the story. Definitely NOT one of Eastman's best.

Book Description

** COMPLETELY UNAUTHORIZED **
In this eclectic anthology of essays, former cast member Jewel Staite, "Kaylee," philosopher Lyle Zynda, sex therapist Joy Davidson, and noted science fiction and fantasy authors Mercedes Lackey, David Gerrold, and Lawrence Watt-Evans contribute to a clever and insightful analysis of the short-lived cult hit Firefly. From What went wrong with the pilot? to What's right about Reavers? and how the correspondence between the show's creator Joss Whedon and the network executives might have actually played out, the writers interrogate the show's complexity and speculate about what might have been if the show Firefly had not been cancelled.

This was a great and inventive TV show...too bad they didn't see fit to give it another chance. The movie was wonderful...check out the DVD's for the movie and series!! You'll find them here on Amazon...

4 out of 5 stars Keeping Firefly alive.......2007-05-15

Good reading material for a fresh outlook on a series that should still be in existance.

5 out of 5 stars Lost without Firefly? You need this book!.......2007-05-13

This is not just a puff piece.

There are serious critiscms of aspects of the Firefly 'verse in this book. But for the intelligent discerning reader, this is just what you've been looking for--people who love Firefly but are willing to critically discuss it. You may not agree with the authors of the various essays but you will share their loss and enjoy their intelligent commentary on the show.

3 out of 5 stars Not for Everybody.......2007-02-07

This book is great for those who wanted to dig a little deeper into the short-lived cult show, Firefly. It's primarily made up of brief essays based on the show by various writers. Some of the essays range from thought-provoking ("Who Killed Firefly?") to humorous ("Firefly vs. The Tick") to quite useful ("Unofficial Glossary of Firefly Chinese").

A few of the contributing writers seem to miss the point of the show, but it's sometimes worth hearing their point-of-view regardless.

So basically, the book works for those fans who rewatch the episodes for fun and would like to get another fix but definitely not for the uninitiated.

5 out of 5 stars 'Joss' Fine!.......2007-02-02

If you really loved the series, then you HAVE to get this book! It gives you several different views of the characters, plots, history and imangination of this stunning and highly entertaining show. I bought it for my brother, but I ended up keeping it for myself!

    Book Description

In the summer of 1996, Gregory Crewdson spent two solitary months at his family's cabin in Becket, Massachusetts. Using both small- and medium-format cameras, he obsessively photographed the fireflies that came alive at dusk each evening. Crewdson was drawn to the flickering lights, in part, by the underlying impossibility of capturing their elusive beauty in pictures. This luxurious volume, featuring 61 full-page tritone reproductions, calls to mind many of the hallmarks of Crewdson's oeuvre, from the sense of wonder in the nocturnal landscape, to the focus on light as a narrative event, to the fascination with nature as a psychological mystery. Although consistent in terms of their subject matter, these photographs demonstrate a wide scope of visual expression ranging from almost pure abstraction to more idyllic representations of the natural landscape.

5 out of 5 stars Harrison brings it rich and true!.......2007-08-25

Prolific novelist (Legends of the Fall), screenwriter, poet (The Theory and Practice of Rivers), and short story writer, Jim Harrison embeds people in landscape and weaves through torque of narrative, prose, and emotional import a web of intricate and compelling design. The Woman Lit by Fireflies, the final novella of this collection, powerfully explores ingenuity, freedom, and loyalty.

5 out of 5 stars Still great fifteen years later.......2006-08-08

i came on my copy of this book a few days ago. i was unpacking after a move and there was a lot to do. i had fond memories so i started reading. two hours later i was still sitting on a box reading. the title story remains one of the most engaging stories written by a man about a woman.

5 out of 5 stars Satisfying story line with dry wit and top-notch prose!.......2005-03-20

Harrison is a master of his art. His insight into the heart of men and women, is loving but incisive. The first story "Brown Dog" is infinitely re-readable. Harrison's characters are bluntly, and hilariously honest. The main character, a drunk bumbling through the woods of Michigan's upper penninsula is someone I never would have thought I would feel interest in but Harrison brings a humanity and intelligence to this unsympathetic picture that enthralls the intellect and engages the heart.

The other stories are beautifully done as well--the portrait of a middle-age woman breaking out of a stultifying relationship by camping overnight in a cornfield is touching and inspiring. Harrison's insight and empathy enable him to convincingly portray the world through his character's eyes.

4 out of 5 stars Brown Dog can stand on its own.......2004-04-24

This book is actually a collection of three novellas. My favorite, by far, is "Brown Dog". The main character, BD, is a man not very smart, but not too dumb, not very honest but not a bad person either. Bumming his way through life, he gets into more than one bind, and is able to tell the stories in a very self-deprecating tone that immediately endears him to the reader. This is a fantastic story, and the book is worth it just because of it.

"Sunset Limited" was OK, maybe a bit too formulaic for my taste. "The Woman lit by Fireflies" i liked the least. I simply didn't have any sympathy for the woman in question.

5 out of 5 stars Brown Dog is a Hero for Our Time.......1999-12-16

I was first introduced to Jim Harrison when I took an Intro to Fiction class taught by Harrison biographer/critic Edward Reilly. The book that I read was The Woman Lit by Fireflies. "Brown Dog" is, by far, my favorite novella in the collection. He is an underdog that simply wants to live off the land and be left the hell alone. Admirable qualities in my opinion. "Sunset Limited" and the "Woman Lit by Fireflies" are also excellent, but "Brown Dog" makes me hurt from laughter.

Not the most insightful review, I'm sure. However, how can a person be critical about something he or she enjoys?
