Buying this book enhanced the joy of pen collecting!.......2003-07-08
I wished I bought my copy years ago, it would have saved me so much money in buying pens that were not exactly the model that the seller described (going to a few markets/pen shows and especially on-line auctions).
The history of pens from around the world is well documented. The pen manufacturers are grouped in chapters by country.
Every pen is life size. More than 2,300 pens are shown and the color representation is great. Even a Parker Snake, Aztec, Swastika, Forget-me-not and many, many more I just dream about! Only gripe -- no price list, but Lambrou states that people can abuse the information as the price list is only valid at the time of print.
To date, I 've yet to see any other book as well put together's as this one.
Don't use false economy like I did. Buy this book as soon as you can -- it gives many, many happy hours of pen collecting and reading!

The ultimate book on fountain pens.......2000-10-12
This first impression, positive as it was, in no way prepared me for what I was to find inside: over four hundred pages with glorious color plates. Literally thousands of pens - mostly vintage - spectacularly photographed, and presented exactly life size. (Ever wonder whether your newly purchased vacumatic is a sub-deb, debutante, junior, slender, standard, major, oversized, or Maxima? Just lay it over the photographs in Lambrou's book!) Fascinating reproductions of vintage advertisements. Detailed histories - model by model - of all major manufacturers and many lesser-known ones, including Edward Todd, Triad, Diamond Point, Chilton, Stephens, Mentmore, Summit, Wyvern, Burnham, Soennecken, Osmia, Tropen, and so on and so forth, covering the U.S., the U.K., Germany France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Japan. The book is, plain and simple, a work of art and of incredible beauty. I could spend weeks just browsing its pages.
In retrospect, my biggest mistake in fountain pen collecting was to wait for several years before purchasing a copy of Lambrou's Fountain Pens of the World...

Fountain Pens and Pencils: The Golden Age of Writing Instruments
George Fischler , and Stuart Schneider Manufacturer: Schiffer Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0764304917 |
Book Description
This book is for all people using, owning, or collecting fountain pens and their matching pencils. It will introduce the beginning pen collector to the hobby and answer questions asked by advanced pen collectors about the earliest and rarest of pens. With over 1,000 fountain pens illustrated in full color, full- or nearly full-sized photographs, it will help identify pens and provide the opportunity to examine many of the pens that were produced. George Fischler and Stuart Schneider are well-respected leaders in the antique pen world. They bring their love and knowledge of these works of art to this book. The examples they present represent the whole range of the history and production of fountain pens, from the earliest to the present and from the most common to the rarest. L.E. Waterman, Parker, Swan, Sheaffer, Wahl-Eversharp, Mont Blanc, Crocker, Chilton, Moore, A.A. Waterman and many other companies are included in this comprehensive, heavily illustrated history. In addition to photographs of the pens, a large representation of the company's advertising has been gathered and reproduced in Fountain Pens and Pencils. A must for collectors, dealers, and all those who appreciate the ingenuity and creativity of industry.Customer Reviews:
Very Comprehensive.......2006-03-11
Best book buy........2005-09-08
Well worth the price.......2000-07-16
Nor is this book limited to the seasoned expert; I first read it as an utter novice and found it delightfully accessible (the plentiful color photos go a long way here.) The only caveat is that - as mentioned by another reviewer - the suggested prices seem very high; it might be a mistake for a neophyte to base purchasing decisions on the listings in this book.
Pass up that aero-filler 51 or that unrestored blurrily-photographed vac major, for the time being, and pick up a copy of this book instead. In the long run, it's a far better investment if you are truly interested in vintage fountain pens.
Overall a must-have book for the serious collector.......1998-09-22

It's not just what you write, it's what you write it with. In a world where e-mailing and word processing are the new norm, nostalgia for fountain pens, inkwells, and other erstwhile desk accessories is on the rise. What's more satisfactory--signing a letter with a Bic or a black rubber gold-nibbed 1950s Parker Duofold? For lovers of pen and ink, The Write Stuff is an informative book on the history of ink and ink containers, pen making, and collecting.Filled with black-and-white photographs and illustrated advertisements (plus a 31-page full-color section), The Write Stuff takes us through the advent of the writing trade up to the rediscovery of the fountain pen in the 1980s. Beginning with Egyptian scribes and lasting until the Middle Ages, inkwells were plain and serviceable and pens made from reeds or feathers. With the Renaissance, inkwells became ornate and were often made of precious metals or delicate porcelain (for the most part, only the wealthy could read and write). The steel pen debuted in the mid-1700s, and not until the 20th century did fountain pens, which are now sought-after collectibles, appear. Inkwells and desk accessories are often of more value than fountain pens, but the pens invoke a fond sentiment for less-hurried times--and these days, represent style, prestige, and power.
Written by Ray and Bevy Jaegers, longtime pen and inkwell collectors, The Write Stuff tends to focus more on the history of the inkwells, pens, and their makers than on how to collect or on the going rate for these collectibles. But they do make you want to push that keyboard aside and reach for a thick sheet of combed cotton paper, a cut crystal inkwell, and a white goose quill. --Dana Van Nest

A very good introduction, but no more than that.......2003-02-19
This book is an excellent gift for someone who is interested in taking up the hobby of collecting desk accessories. However, as it is only intended as an introduction, it does not have any real depth. If you are hoping to use this book to help you understand the items you already have, then you will be disappointed (as I was). But, if you want this book for the introduction that it is, you will enjoy it.
Delightful Reference For "Writing Stuff" Collectors !.......2000-08-16

A very entertaining book with excellent pictures.......2001-06-19
It is not a reference book, because of the choices and number of pens covered. However, it is a very beautiful and entertaining book that is very well worth reading. You could even spend an evening just dreaming away with the pictures ...
Broad in scope with great depth and excellent photography........1999-11-07
The second part is a selection of pens produced over the last one hundred years and all the major manufacturers as well as some of the long forgotten ones; Nettuno, Ercolessi and Pygmalion to name a few. The interesting thing here is that the pens mentioned are ones off the beaten track and the same old list of names is not replicated here, making this book quite unique. The selection is in chronological order and even a quick read gives a moving picture of pen design over the last century.
The images used in the book are first rate and are interspersed amongst the text , avoiding the boring visuals normally associated with such books. The graphics are also excellent and add to the quality of the book.
Quality is a by-word here , not only are the design and technological aspects of the pen discussed , there is also a wealth of information on pen production dates , company information and marketing and advertising by the different companies.
A technique used in the book to interrupt the narrative , mid-stream by using a different page design to focus on a particular topic discussed in the main narrative can become quite irritating and the book would have been better served by putting these pages at the end of each chapter.
This is a small gripe with what is essentially an excellent book. Eminently enjoyable , unique and with coffee-table quality , this is a must have for any pen collector.

Affordable, Enjoyable, Usable.......2000-10-12
It's treatment of manufacturers attracted me. The layout is easy to read and understand. It's a handy reference for a new collector, though I'm sure an advanced collector would be disappointed.
Compared to many other references, it should also be noted that this book is very affordable.
I do not regret adding this volume to my library.
NOT a collectors reference.......2000-02-03
Notable for What is MISSING as for What it Contains.......2000-01-05
Its real strength was in the 2 to 5 page vignettes on various manufacturers and marketers active today. Each company which is listed is shown by a list of models in production, where the factory is (or factories are), and where in the world they distribute. The legend for "price range" is little off, though, reflecting list price rather than street prices.
The problem, though, is notably how much is left out. While the author never indicates that he planned on a complete or all inclusive guide, there are whole manufacturers left out; and whole models made by some manufacturers left off of the list. That, and when the list of "sources" is provided at the end, I had to wonder why those particular sources were listed and many major distributors were omitted.
I would rather have skipped the pages of brands which are just remarketers of styles which are made by other manufacturers (who were already listed elsewhere in the book - indicated by a "see page x" cross reference), and had a more complete rendering of current types.
Very enjoyable........1999-11-09

A valuable guide to carry with you........2002-04-18
The rest of the book is devoted to colored photos of various fountain pens. The pictures are very good and the selection of pens shown is very good. The values shown are, like all prices shown in such books, progressively out of date. They are good though to give a relative value for pens.
This is an excellent book for its purpose - to help identify, grade and price used fountain pens. It does its specified purpose well. It's not meant to be an encyclopedia. Such a book would have to be a many volumn set.
Deeply recommended!.......2001-06-18

Fountain pens from 1870s through 1950s.......2001-12-04
While the short history of fountain pens and pen manufacturer histories are in English, the photo captions are in both English and Italian. The history of fountain pens and the artisans who developed them is drawn with a broad stroke from Egyptian history to the 1950s, including the 1884 patent by Waterman for the first truly workable ink feed fountain pen, the fountain pen's heyday in the 1920s, and its resurgence over the past few years.
A brief history of several pen manufacturers concludes the book, and includes a look at United States makers Waterman, Parker, Shaeffer, Wahl-Eversharp, and Conklin; German manufacturers Montblanc and Pelikan; English-United States maker Mabie Todd; English designer Conway Stewart; and the Italian firms of Aurora, Omas, Ancora, and Columbus.
A nice reference book and eye candy for the collector and an inexpensive introductory text for those looking at beginning collecting. Nothing in the book talks about how to collect and the like. This is just a pretty book with photos of some exquisitely made fountain pens.
