Book Description
This is Monty Roberts's long-awaited sequel to The Man Who Listens to Horses. In this fascinating book, Monty Roberts shows us how to use the "Join-Up" technique-his amazing method for persuading a wild horse to accept a saddle, bridle, and rider-as the model for how best to strengthen human relationships. Full of memorable encounters with horses and humans, Horse Sense for People has at its core a belief in the power of gentleness, positive action, nonviolence, and trust. Roberts provides thought-provoking guidelines for improving the quality of our communication with one another, for learning to "read" each other effectively, and for creating fear-free environments. With demonstrations of the Join-Up technique selling out arenas all over the world, Monty Roberts continues to inspire enthusiasts and convert skeptics. Sure to draw many new readers, Horse Sense for People is the book Monty Roberts's fans-be they horse enthusiasts, business managers, or book lovers-have been waiting for.
"I'm no horseman, but I know miracles when they happen. I've watched this magician of nonviolence change the wild rearing beasts into gentle horses under their riders, time and again, in minutes. Here he hands us some powerful lessons about healing and gentling ourselves and our relationships." (Richard Bach, author of Jonathan Livingston Seagull)

Why take human relations advice from Monty Roberts?.......2006-02-01
By now, probably most of you have heard of the scandal about James Frey's Oprah Book Club bestseller, "A Million Little Pieces." As it turns out, the book, published as an autobiography, has been disclosed by thesmokinggun.com to be fiction.
Debra Ristau, coauthor of "Horse Whispers & Lies", the expose about her cousin, said that many people have contacted her with regard to the Frey issue's relevance to her book and Monty's own allegedly false autobiography.
She and her mother Joyce Renebome have now (Jan. 31, 2006) returned their book to their website. Some used print copies are still available through Amazon.com. Apparently, the authors also plan to copy their documentation for their book to the web, which will be a herculean task, due to the volume of material they collected.

His best-seller, "The Man Who Listens to Horses," was sold as NON-FICTION. (Random House 1996)
Like James Frey's, "A Million Little Pieces," Monty's memoirs are not even close to the truth. Worse, Monty accuses his parents of heinous acts to make himself the hero.

An Extraordinary Legacy.......2005-11-02
Monty Roberts' "Horse Sense for People" is a good book about an extraordinary person. Rising above his own abusive childhood where he suffered 71 broken bones by age 12 from his father's beatings he has shown that his Join-Up method with horses can be used to "tame" unruly children. He and his wife Pat raised 47 foster children plus three of their own. Roberts said, "I had show there is a better life if you get rid of violence."
Roberts turned the horse world on its head and gained international fame when he developed a technique called Join-Up based on communicating with horses using their natural body language. He says communication among humans and horses enables Join-Up and has identified 187 signs with which he can communicate with a horse. He says, "The language of the horse is the language of gestures. It is a gift we all have."
Roberts has trained over 70,000 wild horses and usually gets and out-of-control horse to accept saddle, bridle and rider in 30 minutes. He learned to "listen" to horses by paying attention to the way they communicate with each other with their ears, eyes and body postures. An essential part of Join-Up is the breakthrough moment when a horse bonds and nudges him.
Now 70, Roberts rode his first horse at age three, won his first riding trophy at age 4 and spent most of his life working as a competitive rider trainer, winning four world championships and training hundreds of stakes-wining racehorses.
Roberts is the author of three best sellers including the book "The Man Who Listens to Horses" that sold 4.5 million copies. He wrote the book at the urging of Queen Elizabeth II who invited Roberts to train her equestrian staff. His work inspired "The Horse Whisperer" a best selling novel by Nicholas Evans that was made into the movie starring Robert Redford.
Roberts travels the world giving lectures and demonstrating his techniques. Much of the money from his non-profit organization goes to local charities and communities he visits. He also holds dozens of workshops at his "Flag is Up" farm in California for corporate executives (representatives from over 200 corporations attended the past decade), businesses, educators, social workers and other leaders who want to create conditions that foster trust, cooperation and partnership to improve efficiency, motivation and satisfaction.
For years the educational authorities were skeptical about Roberts' discipline methods until a failing British School adopted his practices in a last-ditch attempt to evade closure. The results were spectacular. In less than four years the Kingshurst Junior School in Solihule was transformed into a center of excellence. The 290 pupils with 40% special needs children love going to school now.
Roberts, a grandfather with a cowboy hat, is now inundated with requests for help from schools all over the world. For discipline he uses signed contracts titled "A Road Map to Excellence" that outline the effects of children's positive and negative behavior. Roberts says, "Before they act they must know the consequences of their actions. Contracts allow kids to manage their own lives. It's about assuming responsibility...there is no such thing as teaching-only learning."
Roberts discovered that many people who cry or faint when the horse nudges him in Join-Up have experienced mental or physical abuse.
Roberts says people, like horses, perform better in environments that "request" rather than "demand" where they are willing partners.
Central to Roberts' horse training methods is the complete elimination of physical and emotional violence. He says, "The more you use pain, force and coercion, the more the horse holds back and tries to fight."
Roberts admits that applying pain may result in obedience and compliance but says it is ultimately counterproductive as there is no choice. Teaching through partnership allows the freedom to choose and produces a sense of accomplishment that is more productive than force and intimidation.
Roberts has performed his horse-gentling techniques before hundreds of thousands of people around the world. He says, "Remaining cool and getting out of the punishment business is critical to having an effective relationship with horses and children."
horse sense for people.......2005-08-02
This book is an easy read for people interrested in horses- combined with people recoveries. It speks about respect and engaging into the language the person/horse concerned already speaks. It may be revolutionary to people who have a past of/in violence (verbal or physical) even if its just at low levels. It helped me makeing sence of a whole bundle of feelings, ideas, perseptions and ideals. This book does contain one chapter which speaks very direct and hosistic about one particular case of child abuse. Wich is defnetly R18!!! Usefull read in my view as a future Social Practitioner.
Entertaining and informative, but schmaltzy........2004-05-26
I enjoy self-help/psychology books, and was intrigued by his idea of using body language to communicate with horses. I haven't read any of his other books, so the information about Equus (the language of horses) was new and completely fascinating.
Roberts' main method of transferring his horse ideas to people is by telling heartwarming 'communication' stories from corporations and by telling heartwarming anecdotes about how he saved yet another troubled teen's life with his kind and steadfast nature.
As much as I can admire someone who starts horses in less than half an hour, and as much as I can agree that it's better not to hurt defenseless animals, extrapolating these theories to "violence is never the answer" makes me roll my eyes.
It would be better if he had stayed with specifics and not tried to lay down a world-guiding philosophy. Because when you get right down to it, if the question is serious enough, (Like, "should the South secede from the Union") violence is the only possible answer.
The stories are interesing enough to make up for it, but I could have done without the self-congratulatory air. Like actresses who write diet books, people who write about what they don't know often embarass themselves.
Join-Up and Social Reform.......2004-01-15
Less Horse, More People
I'm not that interested in social reform, so I liked this book least of the three written by Mr. Roberts. It's about applying Join-Up principles to people, at all levels of society. Philosophy is interspersed with stories of the author's experiences with remedial horses and people. Key statements are 'Violence is never the answer', 'Violence is always for the violator and never for the victim', and 'No one of us was born with the right to say 'you must or I'll hurt you' to any other creature, animal or human'.
The book is not clear on exactly what it means by violence. (Page 68: -quote- All of this raises the question, "How do you define violence?" It's a very difficult question with no simple answer. -endquote-) 'Coercive Violence', is my best guess. I am unsure if the nonviolence statements were meant to extend to human self-defense.
The author himself describes man as 'fight', horses as 'flight'. Thus, they're very different. It seems logical that horse-human analogies must fall apart eventually, specially if you believe (as I do) that people are moral beings and can choose to do right or wrong in ways that horses cannot. The book also gives brief opinions on a few subjects that really deserve thorough study and discussion before conclusions are drawn; firearm restriction, criminal incarceration, tracking devices for offenders, spanking.
*Content Note: Parents getting this book for pre- or young teens should know that it includes a vivid story of sexual abuse, told in the victim's words.
If you are looking for information on horses and Join-Up, I suggest you buy Mr. Robert's other fascinating books "The Man Who Listens to Horses" and "Shy Boy". Give "Horse Sense for People" a test run at your library before parting with cash.
These are my personal opinions only and you may react to the book quite differently. This review is not intended in ANY way as a detraction of Mr. Monty Robert's fine work with horses or even of the application of some "Horse Sense" (common sense?) to people.

Customer Reviews:
Good ideas and insights.......2007-09-25
Interesting ideas linked with inisghts into Chris Irwins personal life, trials & tribulations. Very readable.
Super-Natural Shaman.......2007-06-11
I can see how some might view this work as a book of Chris Irwin excuses. He bares his soul for the world to see, so when one only skims the surface and avoids going deeper, it appears shallow.
I was so impressed with this book that I immediately went on line to Chris's website and bought every single one of his traing DVD's (I train horses for living and I am always looking for ways to better communicate with them). It is so rare to find a person who connects to the horse the way he does. Yes, he's made mistakes, but I don't know anyone who hasn't. And, not once, did I read anywhere in the book, where he said that it was ok that he beat on Stella. He simply pointed out the events and his frame of mind that lead up to his unraveling.
This book touched my heart in ways I have never had a book do before. Chris is a "Super-Natural" Horseman (read the book and you'll understand the super-natural vs. natural horsemanship), who shares with the reader his path to hell and how he made it out. He's not a showman, or a salesman, he's a horseman on a shaman's path.
Namaste
Well written book of excuses.......2006-09-13
Chris Irwin wrote this book after beating a mare named Stella at a demonstration. He'd been working hard and shouldn't have accepted the invitation that day; he had been pushing himself too hard. The manager of the event set him up by sending three mares that didn't pasture together into the arena, and a fight broke out between the horses. Chris fueled the fire by reacting to the situation and beating Stella after getting the other two mares out of the ring. He nearly ruined his career as a result. And this book of excuses is his attempt at finding a silver lining in that situation.
If you want to hear about how Chris' life has unravelled... how a young man his age has been married four times in his attempts to overcome his dysfunctional childhood, then this story may peak your interest.
If you want to see a picture of Chris skiing, and a photo of Chris teaching his son to ride a bike, and a photo of Chris playing guitar and singing at a wedding, and a photo of Chris in his cowboy cocaine days in the 80's, and a photo of Chris when he was 15 on the rowing team in high school and won the championship -- then this is the dark horse book for you.
Every photo is "Chris this" or "Chris that" -- and most of the photos don't relate to the text. It felt egotistically motivated, and I began to realize that Chris' dark horse is his insecurity -- and he hasn't conquered it yet.
I'm very interested in learning about the spiritual connection between humans and horses; but this wasn't the book for me.
I respect everything that Chris Irwin has accomplished in his career, but he needs to forgive himself and stop making excuses, before he can stop dancing with his dark horse.
Be preprared for introspection and self-analysis.......2006-05-21
Well known clinician, Chris Irwin, met his match in Stella, a dark mare who refused to play games. She challenged Chris, forced him to decide what was most important to him, and then Chris, in the form of this book, shares his lessons with us.
Unlike most of the other books I've read, Mr. Irwin calls it as he sees it. He doesn't sugar coat the truth, that "natural horsemanship" is an oxymornon (there's nothing natural about putting saddle and bridle on the horse and forcing it to go counter to its natural instincts which tell it to flee), that somebody has to be the better horse, the boss, and that horses provide a mirror for our thoughts and fears. He provides food for the brain, stuff to think about, and in sharing his story, he brings the knowledge he's gained to others.
I found this book to be very thought-provoking. I find myself thinking about my relationship with my horse in a completely different light. Could it be my inner fears (of falling off, getting hurt again) are mirrored in her flighty nature? Perhaps by facing my own shadow self, my dark horse, that it will help our relationship? Mr. Irwin, through his prose, seems to think so.
I recommend this book for anyone seriously pursuing a relationship with their horse. From backyard ponies to professional trainers and riders, anyone can benefit from the information in this horse. And if you don't even own a horse, but am looking for a little soul searching, I'm going to recommend this book too. It is an amazing piece of work, and I am looking forward to reading Mr. Irwin's other titles.
Irene Adler, Nicole Wallace and...Stella?.......2006-02-07
Some have called Chris Irwin the Dr. Phil of equines. I guess I have always kind of thought of him as an equine profiler. His tremendous instinct for and knowledge of horse psychology is what makes him such an observant trainer and teacher. His second book opens with a humbling tale of a mare that brought him to his knees so to speak. A mare named Stella that bedeviled this excellent horse whisperer and sent him scrambling out of the round pen without his composure. Now if Mr.Irwin were a fictional character I would imagine Stella the mare would occasionally turn up at future clinics when he least expects her. Appearing once or twice in his videos and books. Squaring off with him in the tradition of Sherlock Holme's Irene or Bobby Goren's Nicole. But Stella is real and she forced Irwin to look hard at himself as a person and a horseman. That introspection weaves in and out of the theme of this book. Irwin's personal stories are combined with valuable training and riding advice. Probably some of the best guidance out there for equestrians. What I appreciated most about this book was the fact that spirituality and personal development were never ignored in the pursuit of excellent horsemanship. In fact it's vital. Read this book and discover how horses can aid you on your journey toward being true to yourself, toward healing, toward personal and professional achievement and better relationships. Someday I hope to have the great good fortune and privilege to ride in one of Mr. Irwin's clinics. Until then I have his book on my shelf as I strive to become worthy of my horse.

Book Description
Can horses really teach us to be better human beings? In this groundbreaking work, you will discover that the answer is a resounding "Yes". While working with severely disturbed youths, therapists Adele and Deborah McCormick discovered the best healers were their herd of Peruvian Paso horses. Through their work with horses, the McCormicks' patients were initiated into the hidden world of animal energy and instinct, and found a safe and natural way to learn about their own dualistic natures. Patients learned to tap into their primal "animal" mind and energies and apply them toward more creative and responsible living. What took days or months to uncover in an office setting took onyl minutes when patients were on a horse. You will read case after fascinating case of people discarded by society and the psychiatric community whose lives were turned around by the intuitive guidance and friendship of their equine therapists. What People are saying... "This book got me. It is about personal growth and the cultivation of wisdom, and is one of the wisest contributions I have come across in years...Its implications for healing are utterly profound. Horse Sense and the Human Heartis a breakthrough work." --Larry Dossey, M.D. author Prayer is Good Medicine and Healing Words "Horse Sense and the Human Heart is an eye-opening and heartwarming adventure. In sharing their pioneering therapeutic discoveries, Adele and Deborag McCormick take us on a shamantic interspecies odyssey. They reveal a secret world governed by wise equine masters, availalbe to help heal our psyches, and guide the human spirit on its journey toward wholeness." --David Jay Brown, author, Brainchild and Mavericks of the Mind
Customer Reviews:
Horse Sense.......2007-05-29
This book presented a good overview of the usefulness of horses in therapy. Some of terms were very psychological, however, and perhaps not understood by the general public. It gave a good viewpoint of how horses can be used to help people struggling with their own problems. The specific examples were particularly helpful.
Phenominal Glimpse of Holistic Applications with Horses.......2004-10-20
This page turner enlightened my psyche and transcended my love for horses. The usage of horses in therapy related aspects has always intrigued me. I was mesmerized to read page after page of actual case studies of positive impacts of such therapy. As I read this book, I stopped thinking about clinical applications for this therapy and realized how close horses have been to my own heart. They have a way of centering one and grounding your thoughts to the realities of life. This book was not only thought prevolking but inspirational. I would highly recommend!
Psycho-babble.......2003-01-12
My primary complaint about this book is that the authors are not familiar with the idea of "Show, Don't Tell". The book hops blithely from topic to "inspirational" topic, tossing in pseudo case studies at random. These case studies, or short stories about particular client/horse experiences, rarely last more than a page and would be just as easily summed up in a single sentence like "Joanne recognized her control issues after realizing that horses can't be controlled like humans can". In several cases, the stories would end just as I started to be curious enough to read more. In many other cases, the stories were so short or bland that I didn't care about them at all. The basic thrust of most of them, regardless of the chapter title (like "Our Connection with Animals", "Riding Horses to Health", and "The Genesis of Feelings") was that "the magic of horses fixes stuff". While people like "Joanne" are described as having these sudden revelations about their lives, there is nothing to follow up whether they took that lesson back and truly made a change in their life. The troubled youth who tried to straighten up from his jail cell so he could someday acheive the dream of owning a horse might just as well have been inspired by the dream of owning his own tattoo parlor. Don't TELL how much we can learn from the special and magical horses, SHOW me.
Every horse in the authors' stable is an anthropomorphic Lassie. Their horses know just what lessons their clients need to learn, are sweet and loving to anyone who approaches with an pure and open heart, but collectively act crazy a la Black Beauty if someone is on drugs or just plain untrustworthy. One stallion trumpets and paws at the ground because he "knows" that there is a foal trapped under a fence several miles away. A horse tumbling off a cliff has terror in her eyes, not for herself, but for her rider. A mare's negative reaction to a student's tension and anger is because she "knew" that the student was ready for the lesson of being forced to take resposibility. Furthermore, the authors' intense focus on the traits of their beloved Peruvian Iberian breed (a fine breed, to be sure) ends up implying that there is something special and magical about the breed itself, rather than horsekind in general. I am an avid horse lover, and at no time did I feel that any equine in this book was a real living, breathing beast.
Metaphysical abilities are attributed where none are necessary. A student realizes that the more she concentrates on staying away from flowerpots in the corner of the arena, the closer she and her mount get to them. The fact is, all beginning riders learn the lesson "look where you want to go". There are physical reasons for this that have more reasonable explanations than "vibrations" or "path of energy". I can't argue that any of this is false, because it isn't. However, the psychospiritual and metaphysical aspects of horsemanship as presented here are too syrupy for my own sensibilities.
There is little that is presented in this book that I would challenge or disagree with, but the presentation was too nonsensical to have been inspiring to me, and in fact, I had a very difficult time trying to discover what the true message of the book is. If I'd never had experiences of my own with horses and were handed this book to convince me to back a new venture using horses in psychological therapy, I doubt I'd write a single check. Although I have the strong feeling that the authors are experienced horsewomen and competant psychiatrists, there was nothing in this book to truly convince me of this. The only reason I gave this book 2 rather than 1 star(s) is because it may have interest for psychotherapists with little exposure to horses.
Complicated and uninspiring.......2002-09-24
I am with the person from Monte Sereno, CA - I just couldn't get past the first few chapters - waiting for the book to "get to the point." I prefer a simple, straight forward anecdotal style. If you want to get right into a horse's head and heart, I strongly suggest reading anything (and everything) by Mark Rashid, Chris Irwin, or Henry Blake.
Horse Sense & Human Heart.......2002-03-02
This is absolutely the best book I have ever read. I recommend to anyone who will listen. The book gives insight to horse relationship and can be used in human relationships with each other. I have reread the book just for the enjoyment of it. Thanks to the authors for a wonderful read.

A Keepsake!.......2004-12-16
This was one of my granddaughters first books. She loved this book and would walk around with it in her hands. She found great job in lifting up things to see what was under them, like the new puppies under the yellow cloth and to feel the wool of the sheep. This book has brought her hours upon hours of joy, and although she is 5 years old now, she will not part with it.
Highly recommended.
[...]
Not as good as the other "Pat the.." books, but..........2002-01-01
This is not as fun as the other "Pat the.." books, but my daughter still loves it! These have been her favorite books for months now (she is currently 20 months).
Lamest of the "Pat the ..." series.......2001-06-12
We have "Pat the Bunny", "Pat the Cat", "Pat the Puppy" and this book, "Pat the Pony". It is the worst of the four and the one our child doesn't take from the shelf.
Jack and Jemma visit Jack's aunt and uncle on the farm; first they pat the pony. Okay so far. Then they put on boots. The "interactive" part here consists of touching the smooth boot, which feels exactly like the page. Not only is this bad device used, but it crops up again when you can feel a glass of lemonade. Weak. The scratch and sniff rose, woolly sheep and a blanket that lifts to reveal a basket of puppies are fine. Finally, the tabs are flimsy, and needless to say they are already ripped out of our book -- a wheel that turns, ducks that float, and milk that spills -- or used to.
This is a fun little series, but you would be better off getting "Pat the Bunny" or "Pat the Cat", the two best in our experience.
Pat the Pony.......2000-05-02
My daughter (age 3) absolutely loves this book! She has evenmemorized it! It's a wonderful book for children learning to read. It's very descriptive and also a fun way to interact with your child.Your child will enjoy the "touch and feel" aspect of this book. They will also gain new friends by the end of the book. I highly recommend this book for your child or even as gift for any child! This is a book that children will love and remember as part of their childhood!

Product Description
Over 200 photos & illustrations combined with the author's instructive text make for one of the most useful books on dressage ever offered. Sound practical advice is presented on the progressive training of the horse. For less than the cost of one riding lesson, this may be the most dog-eared book on your riding bookshelf!
Customer Reviews:
Definite common sense.......2007-02-15
I love this book and it's no non-sense common sense approach to training dressage horses. This book starts out teaching the basics from the ground up. This book is a must for any rider, and not just the dressage rider, although I agree that some concepts are a tad too advanced for beginners. Common Sense Dressage will bring your overall riding skills to the next level.
Revelant material........2006-12-18
Although the material was useful, I found the organization and presentation a bit confusing for the novice.
An excellent book for the dressage student..........2000-10-21
This book is an excellent one for any student of dressage. It might be a wee bit complicated for the absolute beginner to riding, but for most who have had some training it's appropriate. The book has a ton of excellent diagrams and illustrations, many showing the view from above so that the desired position of the horse is clearly shown. There are a number of exercises in each chapter which allow the rider to work on various elements on their own as well as with a trainer.
Chapters include: The Horse - How it Functions; Lungeing; The Work in Hand; The Basic Work in All Three Gaits; Activating the Hindquarters; Competition; Special Exercises for Problems; Canter Work; Collection, Extension and In-Between; Piaffe; and Passage. There is also an index which allows you to refer to specific topics.
All in all this is a valuable addition to the library of any equestrian interested in this branch of the discipline, and one I will be sharing with my trainer. Don't hesitate to buy it!
Great Diagrams and clear, concise text........2000-10-18
This is an excellent book for individuals with some basis in dressage as well as a basic understanding of horses and their movement. The many diagrams included with the text are clear, concise and explain how to apply leg, seat and rein aides correctly for most dressage movements. There is also a chapter explaining the timing of the rider's movements for transitions between gaits as well as information to help understand how to move with the horse at the various gaits, including sitting trot. Even with a regular trainer I find this book invaluable and have bought it for several friends as gifts. They also have appreciated the detailed yet simple to understand descriptions of the movements. I especially like the multiple drills that are offered with each movement to help learn the proper execution of the exercises.
Not too impressed!.......2000-08-14
I found some of the information in this book to be very helpful. However, I did find her to be a bit snobbish. I also ride and train in Vienna, Austria, but I do not feel that makes me any better than any other rider in the world. It also does not give Ms. O'Connor the right to tell people to use words like "brav" when working with a horse (especially if they don't know what it means). What is important is that people are comfortable and speak with words and in tones that are comfortable for them.

Book Description
Lisa love being a member of the Saddle Club. But lately, Stevie and Carole haven't had time for her or their friendship. And if she can't
convince her friends that their club is just as important, she may have to find new members to replace them. . . .
Customer Reviews:
horse sense.......2005-10-30
While Stevie prepares games for an upcoming gymkana, Lisa develops a constitution for the Saddlel Club, and Carole prepares the stable mare Delilah for her upcoming birth. The girls get so caught up in their own projects that they forget to stick together. It takes the birth of the foal to show the girls they're better off when they pull together.
Tense, Exciting, deciveing..........2005-03-11
I can't believe how this book was so exciting! I couldn't also believe it when Lisa is not seeing that the french girl is lying to her. A young white horse??? I'm glad Stevie and Carole got to Lisa first. It Was VERY funny when Stevie was trying to invent the gymkhana games on her own. it was exciting to see Delilah foal and how Carole learned alot on horse care when foaling time comes around. Bryant does a great job of keeping the reader hanging on in this book.
This is one important book.......2002-07-15
Over all this book was a tipical book of the Saddle Club. I was very surpised at how all of the members acted in the book! There are a few surprises and all the girls of the saddle club are all focussed on there own thing and it seems like they don't have time for eachother! Majorly important things happen in this book so if you are interested about reading a lot of the books from this series this is a must have!
Blech!.......2000-03-09
This is definitly not one of Bryant's best. She focused too much on Lisa's goodie-goodieness. Lisa is made out to be dumb, and assuming...which she is not. I think Bryant should have focused more on the good qualities of the girls- it's too early to start showing faults in the girls so early in the series. But it is an important part of the series so I recomend reading if your serious about reading all the books this is a must.
Alright, Could have been better!.......1998-06-19
It was pretty good but I like all of the saddle club books but what happened to being best friends and sticking together through thick and thin?

Book Description
Horse Sense for the Leader Within is a must read for everyone! With innovative vision and grounded experience, Ariana Strozzi bridges two seemingly different worlds, creating a powerful new platform for human development, growth and learning. She eloquently reveals how horses mirror our inner world and provide dramatic, transformative shifts in the way we perceive ourselves. Strozzi takes the reader on a journey into the natural world where a wealth of knowledge already exists about what it means to be a leader of one's life. She defines a path to leadership that begins with understanding ourselves from a biological perspective. Leadership as followership comes to life as she encourages the reader to step outside of the human's narrow view of leadership. "Are you leading your life or is it leading you?" becomes the topic of exploration. By becoming aware of our animal nature and our innate drive for survival, we develop the capacity to respond with choice versus react to the pressures of life. The journey continues with insights into the powerful elements of intuitive and emotional intelligence and the significance of nonverbal communication. Ariana demonstrates how horses reflect our patterns of behavior, thought, perceptions and performance in a thousand pounds of visual imagery. They show us the gap between how we actually present ourselves to others distinct from how we think we are being. They ask, "Who is leading?" and expect us to know what we care about and believe in ourselves. In so doing, they help us understand that leadership begins with the self we are. Horses teach us how to find self-acceptance in a world of judgment. As we learn to think more like a horse, we develop our intuitive imagination and can create new possibilities for our lives. Rather than focusing on what is wrong with us, we shift our attention towards what we are naturally good at. On this path of becoming, we focus on staying connected to what has meaning and purpose.

Stands The Test of Time.......2007-08-06
I first read this book over a year ago. I picked it up again recently and was struck by how many of the ideas and insights had stayed with me and worked a sometimes subtle, sometimes profound change in my life. If you want to take control of your life and need a place to start, this book will set you on the path.
Horse Sense for the Leader Within.......2004-11-23
This is a fantastic book by a gifted teacher and horse person. If you are looking to learn more about yourself and how to develop clarity and intention in your life, this is a great read. The author gives a thorough education about the natural instincts of horses and humans and how those instincts affect our behaviors and outlook on life. Learning to recognize how we can work with these instincts to enhance our experience of ourselves and improve our interactions with others is the core gift of this book and of the workshops that the author teaches at her ranch. I recommned both very highly.

A Decidely Different Approach to Career Management.......2004-08-24
Ever become angry because you worked late every day, spent weekends at the office and generally did everything you could to prove you were top dog at doing your job, only to see a promotion slip away to someone who never worked late, left early many days, and was definitely less deserving? Read this book and develop a better understanding of why.
Ries and Trout are two of the top, if not the top, marketing strategists in America and have been recognized as such since they first published their seminal work, "Positioning." In "Horse Sense," they turn their attention away from the world of corporate markeitng and advertising and focus on how people really get ahead in life. Hint: working your tail off ain't gonna get you there.
Essentially, you have to get a horse to ride. That horse could be another individual, an idea, a relative, any number of things. The central idea is that hard work is not what leads to success, rather in most cases it is what so many of us suspect: its not what you know but who you know.
THe authors offer example after example, sometimes to the point of redundacy, to demonstrate that few people are successful simply because they put their nose to the grindstone. In a world where everyone works harder and later, hard work will not get you noticed.
While the authors sometimes stretch their Horse analogy a bit too far, this book is a definite eye-opener and may well change you attitude on how to truly get ahead. I think you'll agree with them on most of their observations and suggestions. Read it and find out for yourself.
Practical Advice.......2001-06-21
Ries and Trout pull no punches in telling you how most people really get ahead. Hint: postive thinking and affirmations have very little to do with it. It's all about how to use the outside world (read: connections) to get ahead, rather than trying to do everything yourself. A real eye-opener.
This is a great book and worth tracking down. And if you like it, check out Ries and Trout's other books, like "Marketing Warfare." Great stuff.
Good Read.......2000-01-24
Explodes common myths about prerequistes to success. Illustrates other criteria mainly external focus for doing well. Success has been equated directly with wealth, one aggrandizes, this in my opinion needs to be viewed with a pinch of salt, at the same time not underestimating the liberating effect wealth can have on the way we live our lives. All in all an easy read, however number of examples cited by authors could have been curtailed.
Identifies the paths to success - in plain English........1999-10-20
One of the most practical books I've ever read. Clearly describes various paths to success - those that are obvious and several that are not so obvious. I immediately identified three of the "horses" I've ridden in my career. Also, found new ideas that can be easily and practically applied. (After reading this, you may find yourself identifying the "horses" others are riding.) Written in an easy to understand style that is tongue-in-cheek, but very serious about the subject.
Good to know how to succed in life.......1999-03-13
explain in simply words how to succed in life and ecourage you to go for the things you trust must
