How To Raise A Puppy You Can Live With.......2007-08-16
EXCELLENT BOOK!!!!! As a Kennel owner I recommend this book very highly. The infomation is presented in an easy to read format and pertains to every puppy, no matter what breed. Every puppy we sell is accompanied with this book as they leave. I only wish more people would read it before they purchased a puppy.
Best Puppy Book overall.......2007-06-12
I have read dozens and dozens of puppy training books, along with conducting first hand KPT training and Basic 1,2 & 3 obedience, and this is by far, the best overall puppy training book I've seen. I have given this book out to so many new puppy owners that I've started to keep a few around on hand for emergencies. That new puppy owner that I come across who doesn't have a clue what to do first....they have this book in hand within minutes so at least they're equipped with the basics. Would highly recommend it as a staple in your puppy/dog library.
How to raise a puppy you can live with.......2007-05-16

Required reading for my new puppy parents.......2007-05-13
I found this book to be an easy read with lessons broken down into bite sized pieces. he format will be quite helpful in guiding my new puppy parents in helping develop their dogs into good canine citizens.
Outdated, with Some Good Tips.......2007-03-04
On page two of HOW TO RAISE A PUPPY YOU CAN LIVE WITH you'll read the following: "All the qualities we admire in the dog come from the prey drive of the wolf." If you're like me, when you first read that sentence you'll be excited to read more. Unfortunately, after that bright beginning, things begin to go downhill, and we're back into the old hash of dominance hierarchy, who's the pack leader, etc. In fact very little of the real wolfiness of dogs is actually admired or celebrated in this book; more often it's punished or ignored! (For a book that really celebrates the dog's genetic origins read NATURAL DOG TRAINING by Kevin Behan.)
This book was originally written in 1981, hence the blurb on the back: "Did you know that puppies go through critical periods?" The trouble is, they really don't. Yes, that was the thinking back in 1981, but most trainers and behaviorists (except Ian Dunbar, who you'd think would know better) are no longer calling these developmental stages "critical periods". They're now referred to as "sensitive periods". And when are trainers going to stop focusing on the idea that since at about 12 - 14 wks. a puppy's brain waves are the same as an adult's, this proves they're ready for training, and you have to start them as early as possible? The authors contradict this idea themselves when in a later chapter they explain that the adolescence phase causes a puppy to stop listening to and obeying his owner. (Why train them so early if they're going to stop listening and obeying at 6 mos.?) Besides, a big part of training is about teaching the dog how to control and focus his emotions, and a puppy's emotions develop at a slower pace than his nervous system does.
Another example of outdated thinking is the constant reference to dominant and submissive behaviors, which we now know are based on stress (the alpha theory came from studies in the 1930s and 40s that were done on wolves held in zoos and sanctuaries, who were behaving in an unnatural manner that was a direct result of living under the stress of captivity). We now know that dominance and submission are not real, and as such are not part of a dog's natural behavioral repertoire. They're more rightly described as "threatening" and "non-threatening" postures; they're simple emotional signals, not indications of rank and status. And I don't know why the authors would still include an appendix on "temperament testing", which is no longer considered valid by anyone who knows anything about canine behavior. (And some of those old temperament tests done on puppies are downright mean, if not cruel!)
Speaking of people who don't know anything about canine behavior, it seems that the authors have done some updating of the text since 1981, which I assume is the reason for a section on Karen Pryor and clicker training that takes its place alongside recommendations for punishing a puppy with a shake can or a spray bottle, which Pryor and other modern trainers don't use. But to me, the mere fact that they've made Karen Pryor out to be an expert on dog training when she doesn't know the first thing about dogs, is indicative of how badly thought-out and how under-researched this book really is. If the authors had really done their homework, they'd know that clicker-training causes hyper-anxiety in some dogs, and increases food-related behavioral problems, such as scavenging and counter-surfing.
Still, there are numerous sections in HOW TO RAISE A PUPPY that are right on the money. I love that part of the goal here is to give uninformed, new dog owners the tools necessary to stick with their pup through the difficult stages of learning. That gets a gold star. Unfortunately, there aren't enough good points here to totally outweigh the bad, at least not for me. It's a fairly good reference tool as long as you ignore some of the mistakes I've mentioned, so I give it three stars total.

Book Description
When you acquire a new puppy you need to meet six developmental deadlines before your puppy is five months old. "AFTER You Get Your Puppy" covers the last three developmental deadlines.
4th Developmental Deadline: Socializing Your Puppy to People - Your Most Urgent Priority is to socialize your puppy to a wide variety of people, especially children, men, and strangers, before it is twelve weeks old. Well-socialized puppies grow up to be wonderful companions, whereas antisocial dogs are difficult, time-consuming, and potentially dangerous. As a rule of thumb, your puppy needs to meet at least one hundred people before it is three months old. Since your puppy is still too young to venture out to dog parks and sidewalks, you'll need to start inviting people to your home right away.
5th Developmental Deadline: Teaching Bite Inhibition - Your Most Important Priority is that your puppy learns to inhibit the force of its bites and develop a "soft mouth" before it is eighteen weeks old. Whenever a dog bites a person or fights with another dog, the single most important prognostic factor is the degree of bite inhibition and hence, the likelihood and seriousness of injury. Accidents happen. Someone may tread on the dog's paw, or a child may trip over the dog while it's gnawing a bone. A dog may snap and lunge at a person when hurt or frightened, but if the dog has well-established bite inhibition, it is unlikely the dog's teeth will puncture, or even touch the skin.
6th Developmental Deadline: Continuing Socialization in The World at Large - The Most Enjoyable Priority of dog ownership is to introduce your well-socialized puppy to the world at large. Your dog will only remain sociable and confident if it continues to meet and greet at least three unfamiliar people and three unfamiliar dogs every day. Meeting the same people and dogs over and over again is not sufficient. Your dog needs to practice meeting, greeting, and getting along with strangers, not simply getting along with old friends. Regular walks with your dog are as essential as they are enjoyable.

Informative and easy to follow.......2007-03-13
I am on the verge of getting a puppy, so all this is in theory as of right now, but the book was very informative. The author delivered the information in a easy to read format The socialization and bite inhibition sections were particularly useful. After reading this book I feel like I am better prepared to be a new dog owner.
Excellent Preparation for A New Puppy Arrival.......2006-02-25
This is a book I read cover to cover and took many reference notes. It deals with understanding the new puppy and preparing him for socialization with people, vets and other pets. With the skills taught in the book, the puppy can grow into a well-trained adolescent and into a well-mannered adult.
Took the fun out of having a puppy..........2005-12-27
I bought this book because it was referenced on the Dog Scouts of America website, which is a site dedicated to developing positive relationships between owner/dog. I was so disappointed when I received the book, from the moment I got a good look at it's cover and read the subtitle ("...The Clock Is Ticking!"), which I had missed when ordering the book, or I would have thought twice about buying it... This book turned having a delightful puppy into a race against time to prevent having an evil, rotten dog. It took all the fun and optimism out of raising my puppy. I'm glad I stopped reading it, and looked to more upbeat sources for advice on raising my puppy. Many of these sources I found on the internet. I looked to Karen Pryor and her clicker training theories, as well as such books as "Boxers for Dummies" and "The Boxer Handbook" and "I Just Got A Puppy What Do I Do." All these emphasize the power of bonding with your dog, the pleasures of socializing your puppy, and while they don't downplay the significance of socialization, etc. they don't turn the cute puppy you have just made a part of your family into some ticking timebomb set to go off and bring nothing but pain and misery if not socialized absolutely correctly. I grew up with dogs, in a time before "socialization," in a time where you just loved your puppy, and took him places, and tried your best with him/her, and those dogs all turned out fine. I am grateful for all the information that we have these days on how to better raise a puppy to be a happy well adjusted pet, and am doing my best to put that information to good use on my own Boxer puppy.
New puppy help........2005-09-14
This book was very helpful with my new German Shepherd puppy, evn though I already have 3 other dogs, it's nice to read new/different styles and ideas for giving your BIG dog the right start.
A must-read for anyone who has a dog or wants one.......2005-08-20
Funny, straight-forward, and full of brilliant advice so intuitive it seems obvious once you've heard it, this book will change your relationship to your dog. I have one dog I "trained" before I read Dr. Dunbar, and one I trained after, and the difference between the experiences was night and day. You'll be forever grateful that you read this book, whether you already have a dog or, ideally, if you're thinking of getting one.

Good read........2007-09-07
Was worth the while. No alot of detail. Simple and too the point, with many helpful tips.
Welcoming Raw Feeding Into Your Regimen.......2007-06-28
Carina Beth MacDonald writes a funny and witty and reasonable accounting for her switch to raw feeding her animals. It is not a thorough book with extensive nutritional analyses. Furthermore, it does not advise monitoring levels of organ and digestive performance; there are better sources for that information. Mostly it's for the dog to appreciate raw food and for getting the dog's human comfortable with not feeling bad using raw bones, meat and acceptable parts in their animal's feeding. It entertained me, who feeds raw but not exclusively so; I could not convince my mother to convert for her dogs but it has inspired her to use better foods and ingredients, including raw mix-ins.
Back to nature.......2007-06-27
This book is exactly as it describes itself. It gives information on giving your dog raw food - meat and bones as the mainstay of his diet. I read this because I've been searching for information on providing my own food for my dog. While this book has a lot of good information, I decided I was not going to go the raw route - too messy and I worry about bones. In another review I panned a book called Real Food for Dogs. I was very disappointed because it was frivolous and offered food that I do not believe a dog should have. A few weeks later[ The Good Food Cookbook arrived. [ASIN:1592530672 The Good Food Cookbook for Dogs: 50 Home-Cooked Recipes for the Health and Happiness of Your Canine Companion]] This book is much better balanced. The book offers food that is appropriate for dogs and it gives tasty ways of preparing them. I feel this book is somewhere in the middle of Raw Dog Food and Real Food. I recommend you give Good Food a try if you decide raw food is not the way to go.
A VALUABLE BOOK FOR THE BEGINNER!.......2007-06-14
I purchased this book several weeks before I actually started my dogs on the BARF diet, reading it thoroughly and collecting ideas as to what to do and how to do it. I finally started both dogs (13 years old and 9 months old) completely on the barf diet this past Saturday and so far everything is going great! I am now going back and re-reading it besides using it as a reference for several things as I go along. I have read many other barf diet books and I must say that this is the one that I like the most.
BARF and Love It!.......2007-04-06
What a great book. Easy to read. Informative. Much for the person who wants to customize the raw diet for individual dogs. No "holier than thou" snub of cooked food - sometimes you just can't get raw (traveling, for example). The author has a good sense of humor and a down-to-earth style. She assures you that you don't have to be a rocket scientist to feed raw. You just have to love your dog(s). Two thumbs up!

Book Description
Having trained 30,000 dogs for more than 40 years combined, Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson know a thing or two about North Americas favourite pet. They share their wisdom and experience in this easy-to-understand, user-friendly, and comprehensive guide to selecting a breed, including: which breeds are good for small children, the elderly, the allergic, and the city-dweller; the characteristics of each breed; and which dogs are most compatible with different lifestyles. In addition, unlike most breed books, Paws to Consider discusses medical and behavioral problems typical to particular breeds, and offers fascinating information about canines and their potential owners. Kilcommons and Wilsons Good Owners, Great Dogs (Warner, 1992) netted more than 130,000 hardcover copies.
Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2006-07-01
I loved this book! I had absolutely no idea what kind of dog I wanted to get before reading this book. This book separates the breeds into very logical chapters and also cross-references other chapters that the dogs would fit in. I love dogs so much that I was only able to reduce the number that I'd love to 19, but it made me consider breeds that I never would have before. Once I reviewed my 19 with my family, we were able to bring it down to 6 and I'm now doing research on those 6 in order to determine which one we'll buy. This is a great read if you're toggling between a few breeds and want to make sure you consider the good and the bad in the breeds.
SAVE YOURSELF & YOUR DOG FROM HEARTACHE.......2006-01-23
I wish I could afford to give a copy of this book to every library in the country. I have been a volunteer for different animal shelters and rescue groups for many years. Most animals are turned in to shelters because of a mismatch between the owner and their dog, or because people are unaware of what's involved in pet ownership. The authors give a very realistic appraisal of different breeds. I love "Dog Fancy" magazine, but so many times when they profile a breed they will describe "good with children if they are raised with them." "Paws to Consider" will be straightforward in telling you that a particular breed is not good with children. This book also helps you decide when is the right time to add a dog to your household. Too many dogs are given up because the owners have decided to have a baby and don't want to have a dog around the baby. Or an owner makes an impulsive holiday purchase and comes to regret the decision. It is frequently devastating for a family, especially the children, to give up a dog. It is also traumatic for the dog to lose its home and most of these dogs will be euthanized. "Paws to Consider" goes a long way to promoting happy endings for people and the dogs who join their families.
Absolutely Great.......2005-09-02
This book should be mandatory for anyone even thinking of getting a dog. Even if that dog is ten years off. Since I became interested in dogs and dog welfare, I have heard and seen too many times the unhappy scenario of dogs being dumped because their owners just did not bother to do ANY reasearch. Families duped by Beethoven, Lassie, and 101 Dalmations decide tv never lies and buy one for their young children. People who want a guard dog buy a Rottweiler for "protection" and dump it out in the yard. A calm couple wants a "small, quiet, easy-going dog", so they judge on size and get a terrier. A jogger wants a partner and thinks a great dane will keep up.
I love that the book lays it out flat that almost half the breeds listed require more exercize than the average Joe is willing to give them. Sure, we're all charmed by those Weimaraner costume photos... but will you spend at least an hour every day playing with it? Do you even have space for it to do so? Lack of exercize spawns so many behavioral problems that it cannot be emphasized enough. I know another reviewer complained that "too many negatives" were listed for each dog; I prefer it that way. Better that someone realize that the dog they want is too loud, too big, too headstrong, too energetic, too needy, too expensive, or even too gassy, than to get one and then dump it somewhere because they did not realize the mismatch. Or, even better, it may give someone new ideas as far as what is a good match. (Everytime I mention I would love a sighthound, especially an ex-racing greyhound, the immediate reaction is that I shouldn't take something so hyperactive. I say, uh-uh, if I wanted hyperactive, I'd get a lab!)
The book's organization is excellent. It starts off asking why you want a dog and what you want in one. It gives you a starting point as far as where to look for one, and I was ecstatic to see rescue groups mentioned, although I do not think the book went into them enough (it would have been great to say that you can easily find one by googling "[x breed] rescue [your state/area]", or, nowadays, on [...]). I understand that the authors assume the reader wants to buy from a breeder, because I think those people are the ones who will be perusing breeds, and the ones who really need the most assistance. (It's not mean, it's true.) Then the book does something essential - it goes over groups of dog breeds and what jobs they were INTENDED to do, and explains how it affects their behavior and temperament. I recently heard of a man lamenting that he bought a mini schnauzer who was obsessed with his rat cage and would not leave the rats alone. He had not read up that these dogs were originally bred for ratting!
There is a lengthy section going into individual breeds. There are always both pros and cons. Looking into my dog experience and research, I have to say these people know what they are talking about, even without looking at their credentials. The only drawback is that they do not touch on every breed, but then again there are so many it could make this book three times its size. I also think the "not for everyone" section is great, but could use more info. The more people are discouraged from getting Rotts and Pits on a whim, the better.
I personally think there is enough info here to find that dog you want, but it is always recommended that you look to other sources; the book itself says so. Spend time with members of your chosen breed, search the web, read other books. Then buy Kilcommon's/Wilson's Good Dogs, Great Owners, and you're on your way!
Informative and concise.......2005-08-06
The best thing about this book is the common sense advice the authors give--("If you live in an all-white house, don't get a Bouvier des Flandres"). The realistic expectations, both good and bad, outlined for each breed are infinitely more helpful than, say, the breed standards promulgated by the AKC. Most of us want a pet, not a show-dog. While the information on each breed is very specific, there is helpful information in the beginning for any dog owner or potential owner. I also bought "Good Owners, Great Dogs" by the same authors. Great book as well.
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY.......2005-03-31
DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK, BRIAN KILCOMMONS AND SARAH WILSON ARE BOTH COMPLETE IDIOTS. WE USED THIS BOOK AS A REFERENCE WHEN WE BOUGHT OUR BICHON FRISE, WHAT A MISTAKE. IN THE BOOK IT STATES A BICHON CAN BE A 9-5 DOG SO WE BOUGHT ONE. BICHONS ARE EXTREMELY HARD TO HOUSEBREAK,ALL THE BOOK SAYS IS THEY 'CAN' BE HARD TO HOUSEBREAK. THIS BOOK HAS COST US HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS. WE ENDED UP GIVING OUR DOG AWAY TONIGHT BECAUSE WE COULD NOT GET IT POTTY TRAINED AND AFTER FURTHER RESEARCH FOUND OUT THAT BICHONS DO NOT LIKE TO BE LEFT HOME ALONE. THE BOOK ALSO SAYS THAT A SHIH TZU IS A NINE TO FIVE DOG BUT AFTER RESEARCHING THAT BREED THEY ALSO DO NOT LIKE TO BE HOME ALONE ALL DAY. THESE TWO AUTHORS NEED TO FIND A DIFFERENT LINE OF WORK BECAUSE THEY ARE COMPLETE IDIOTS WHEN IT COMES TO DOGS. THANKS BRIAN AND SARAH FOR WRITING SUCH A CRAPPY BOOK!!

Praise
People and dogs have a simple, unwritten contract: The dog provides the devotion, love, companionship and work while we accept the responsibility of providing food, water, shelter, healthcare in life and death, and hopefully some love in return. Unfortunately, we as people often fall short. Dogs rarely do. Tracie Hotchner has written a book that will help us keep up our side of the bargain.
--Dr. Barry C. Browning, B.V.M. & S., M.R.C.V.S.
I believe Ms. Hotchner was a dog in a previous life. Her perspective is that detailed and complete. Since I speak "dog" fluently and converse with my three canines, Lucy, Henry and the "diva" Frances, we have agreed that it is the finest book about dogs ever written.
-Jamie Lee Curtis
My three dogs, Veronica, Lulu, and Max, are all barking, `Finally! The book we've all been waiting for!' Everything you've ever wanted or needed to know about your dog is in here. Hooray!

The BEST!!!.......2006-09-21
I LOVE the Dog Bible. It actually is a means to calm down, get control of our human emotions and realize that the stress we are feeling is normal; that our pets are our kids; that we need to love them & realize that WE must learn to communicate BETTER. Bless the author for this fabulous insight into man's best friend.
Very Helpful Book.......2006-08-27
The Dog Bible is a very complete, easy to follow guide to all things dog. It proved very helpful in training my family's willful Pomeranian puppy, and I plan on using it to train my own puppy. An excellent value!
she's an expert on being an expert!.......2006-07-22
This is the same author, childless herself, who has sold many copies of her books about having a baby, with the same kind of know-it-all authority and poor advice based on absolutely nothing. Hotchner has no credentials, and she also has no real insights or tremendously thoughtful or original points to make about raising and training dogs, which would in fact be credential enough. She has some very silly ideas about dog nutrition and lots of other dubious and wrongheaded advice on training, and she does like to talk about herself. She is a true dog lover, it seems, and her advice is probably a bit more sound than her baby advice was in the past, but why buy this particular book?
Latest, Greatest.......2006-05-06
Each time I go to use my Dog Bible as reference, I get lost in it, following threads of interest. Enjoying all the latest info, and the author's opinions on subjects from behavior and specific breeds to debate on vaccination. Even dog people who believe in their good understanding (or maybe especially those) of what makes a dog tick, will find a useful perspective in this book! Everyone with or without dogs should have access to the Dogs and Children chapter and Scooby's rules for kids.
For a book that calls itself the Dog Bible, I'm not a believer.......2006-04-29
Any book that insinuates that people that own pit bull type dogs (APBTs, Staffies, etc) are either macho, are unintentionally trying to put their families at risk, or just plain criminal gets a thumb down from me. Furthermore, any author who seems to have very few credentials in dog behavior (she's not a vet, a behaviorist, a trainer, or a biologist) and ostensibly calls her book the Dog Bible and actually believes that the majority of pit bull attacks were seemingly unprovoked either a) has no idea about dog behavior and knows the other factors going into any dog attacks (pit bull or not) and/or b) is foolish enough to believe the media pot stirring over these dogs is just plain stupid or maybe secretly afraid of these dogs. I don't own a pit bull myself, but I have a Belgian Malinois and a Siberian husky/Rottweiler mix. I appologize to Ms. Hotchner for not owning a dog that's a shrinking violet. Sorry, I'm surely I'm up to no good.

Dog spoilers!!.......2005-07-17
I got this set as a gift and I have been having fun with it ever since. My three English Springer Spaniels love home-made bones and I have to admit, I loving making them. I have a few dog treat books and each have their own unique appeal. This one is excellent for hard, crunchy biscuits. The Peanut Butter Bones (page 24) are the guy's all time favorite. I make them without the filling and have had to quadruple the recipe. Not just for my dogs but for their friends too. It has become a Saturday morning ritual they won't let me out of. This book has seriously spoiled them.
You can make your own "green breath freshening" type treats by adding 1/2 cup mint leaves to the "Spinach Bones" on page 35. Just lower the temperature to 200 and bake longer to retain the bright green color. I really like the heavy use of whole wheat flour since this makes a harder biscuit and is also so much healthier. The best thing about "You Bake 'Em" is how it follows a basic formula that once mastered, lets you create your own combinations. This was really a great gift!
Great recipes, great gift!.......2005-02-26
My dogs and many neighborhood dogs have sampled several of these recipes. All biscuits were well received and I found them easy to make. The nice thing about these recipes is that you can make little changes or forget an ingredient and no one complains. The dogs love the treats, period! I plan to make the fishy treats again and cut smaller pieces that my cat can enjoy, too. I love this book and all the goodies that came with it, the cutters and the little gift bags are cute. This whole package makes a very nice gift.
Great fun for dog lovers.......2005-02-25
My three labradors and I love this recipe book! One of my dogs has lots of allergy problems and has problems with many commercially available treats and foods, so the recipes in this book offer many options for my allergic dog. I've found the recipes easy to make and also very adaptable to substitutions in ingredients if needed. Everything is well organized and easy to read and understand in an attractive, appealing design. The inclusion of the fun dog-themed cookie cutters makes it even more enjoyable to make special treats for my dogs and to make creative gifts for our doggie friends. My dogs have loved every treat recipe we've tried, as have all the pooches who've gotten them as gifts. I've found this book to be a perfect and unique gift for dog loving friends. If you enjoy doing special things with and FOR your dogs, this "kit" will give you lots of hours of fun and instant popularity with the canines!
Great book for the dog lover.......2005-02-06
I enjoy finding unique books and this one definitely falls under that category. In addition to the dog biscuit recipes the book includes five cookie cutters to cut your treats into the shape of a dog bone, heart, cat, fire hydrant, or doghouse. The obvious question to many readers is why bother to make your own dog biscuits when you can buy them so readily at the store? If you have to ask then you really don't understand the bond between many dog owners and their dog. For me it is because I can control the ingredients and I can create the "perfect" training snack. My dog is quite finicky about dog treats and doesn't like most of the store brands, so using them as a reward just doesn't work. On the other hand the recipe for Cheddar Liver in this book makes a perfect training reward that she will do almost anything to get. The book itself contains 24 different recipes for everything from basic cheese biscuits to liver and oat, liver leather, multigrain herb, grain-free and even carob biscuits. All are easy to make, although several do require a food processor to puree the ingredients. The attached box with the cutters in it is pretty flimsy and soon falls apart. However, the pages of the book are connected to the box via three metal split rings so the box can be removed, the cutters placed in a kitchen drawer or other appropriate place and the book placed on the bookshelf. This took a lot of thought to put the book together in this fashion so it can be easily converted to a standard book and was greatly appreciated on my part. You Bake `Em Dog Biscuits is highly recommended to dog lovers everywhere and a perfect gift for that friend who treats their dog as a part of the family.

Book Description
Informative and practical guide for any dog owner.
Customer Reviews:
Hmmmm.......2006-03-20
I was disappointed by this book, and I'm still not exactly sure why. It was definitely informative, and did show several good methods for adjusting my dogs. But it assumed a lot of technical and anatomical knowledge that I'm sure the majority of potential readers does not have, and in fact even with my own fairly in-depth canine knowledge I felt uncomfortable with many of the techniques, especially the one that starts with a disclaimer about how risky it is, says "do not attempt this at home" and then goes right on to detail how to do it.
I guess my impression was that the book was really written by a vet for other vets, under the guise of being aimed at the general public. There is a lot of soapboxing in it, too, about how vets aren't allowed to practice chiropractic and chiropractors aren't allowed to practice on animals... and while this, if still true, definitely sucks - I didn't buy the book to read about it!
Goin' to the Dogs.......2003-02-06
This book has saved my dog's dignity on more than one occasion. There truly is nothing more gratifying than finding the trouble spot, based solely on observing my dog's behavior, and then being able to refer to this wonderful book for stretching and therapeutic techniques that allow my dog to feel wonderful, almost instantly. I have bought this book for at least 3 of my dog owning friends who swear by it.
Good for the lay person but I wouldn't recommend all.......2003-01-09
Good, thorough explanation of chiropractic in relation to dogs. Good illustrations that help you understand the mechanism of the adjustment. As a chiropractor, I appreciate the detail Dr. Kamen goes into regarding adjustments; however, the typical dog owner may not be able to identify serious medical conditions that would be aggravated by performing a chiropractic adjustment versus a simple malalignment or "subluxation" that would respond very well. Good basic book to look at if you're thinking of taking your dog to an animal chiropractor. Great book to understand what it's all about and how your pet may benefit.
DogRead book of the month.......2001-10-31
This book was chose to be on the prestigious 'DogRead' as a book selection of the month. We only do 12 books a year and this was August 2000. The author comes on line for the whole month to answer questions on the book. It was very well received by our 3000 member email group. The author was very knowledgeable and easy to understand even though also very in depth.

How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With
ASIN: 1888047003 |
Book Description
When you choose a new puppy, you need to meet six developmental deadlines before your puppy is just five months old. "BEFORE You Get Your Puppy" covers the first three developmental deadlines covering the period of puppy selection until your puppy's first week at home.
1st Developmental Deadline: Your Education About Puppy Education - Before you search for a puppy you need to complete your education about puppy education. You need to know how to select a good puppy and how puppies work. Selecting a puppy is similar to selecting a car: Do lots of research beforehand and "test drive" a wide variety. But first, you need to learn how to drive.
2nd Developmental Deadline: Evaluating Your Prospective Puppy's Progress - Before you choose your puppy, you need to know how to assess your prospective puppy's current socialization and educational status. Regardless of breed or breeding, if socialization, housetraining, and basic manners are not well underway by eight weeks of age, the puppy is already developmentally retarded.
3rd Developmental Deadline: Errorless Housetraining & Chewtoy-Training Make certain that an errorless housetraining and chewtoy-training program is instituted from the very first day your puppy comes home.

Dog ownership for the Control Freak.......2006-12-10
I bought this book before getting our puppy. It seemed okay, but after getting our little dog, I realized that I could easily turn our darling, smart little dog into a neurotic mess if I followed the advice in this book. Why would you want to confine your brand new friend to a crate almost non-stop except for small intervals of extremely controlled interaction with you? And the point that he repeats incessantly about one housetraining mistake being a catastrophe is ridiculous. Our dog did have accidents when I wasn't as vigilant as I should have been, but now she is completely housetrained. It just takes time for the dog to physically mature and learn how to signal that she needs to go out. I would not reccomend this book at all. If you want to connect with your pup, go for clicker training.
Good content and arrived quickly.......2005-09-30
I bought this book because my puppy obedience class uses the sequel "After You Get Your Puppy." I wanted more details on how to "crate train" and this book has that. I wish I had actually gotten this book before we bought our puppy because it describes good things to look for in the puppy you choose, which would habe been helpful.
A Lifesaver for You and Your Dog.......2003-06-26
What a difference this book makes! When we got our first dog, we suffered through accidents on the floor, chewed shoes, coats, cushions -- you name it -- because we didn't know what to do. I read this book before we got our second dog (a companion to our first), and it was amazing! With the Errorless Training system Dr. Dunbar recommends, the new dog didn't chew a single bad item (he loves his chewtoys and chews only them) and didn't have a single accident in the house. And the errorless system was incredibly simple to set up. I recommend this easy, owner-and-dog-friendly book to everyone I know. Although it says "Before you get your puppy," this book is completely relevant for adopters of adult dogs.
This book is a goldmine for a new puppy owner........2003-02-24
If you are even thinking of ever getting a puppy or adopting a dog, please buy this book first. It covers everything you will need to know to raise a happy, well manered dog. If more people read this book , there is no doubt in my mind we would have fewer dogs in shelters. This book is part of the solution to animal over population. All breeders should send this book home with their puppies. On top of all of the great information this book provides, it is also easy to read with lots of entertaining pictures. A joy to read!
good book for the working couple/family.......2001-11-06
Will all the "fanfare" about Ian Dunbar I was expecting great things from this book but instead was disappointed. It is a good book for the "working outside of the home couple/family" but not for someone looking to devote their days to raising an intelligent, loving companion.
This book to me, did not read easily and I didn't not agree with many suggestions in it. If you are looking for an easy-to-read, wonderful, funny, well-written, detailed puppy training book, get Mother Knows Best by Carol Lea Benjamin.

good easy to read and use book.......2007-08-27
enjoyed this book. Good info, easy to read and use. Has a lovely selection and variety of recipes.Thoroughly recommend it.
Entertaining.......2007-07-03
This book not only gave you the recipes, it had little helpful hints in regards to what ingredients are not good for your pup.
Unique- with drawbacks........2007-03-01
I bought this book based on all the good reviews and was a little disappointed....almost every recipe calls for a food processor and not having one at the moment pretty much excluded alot of the recipes. Of the ones I did make my two pugs weren't crazy about them. It is O.K. but there are many more that are better out there...
Good Service.......2007-01-16
Thank you for your prompt service. Your communication every step of the way was greatly appreciated. Also, this is delicious.
Best Dog Cookbook.......2006-08-30
This is one of the best cookbooks for dogs. The recipes are very easy to follow and I also like how there are instructions for storing. You don't find that in alot of other books like these. My dogs love everything I've made so far and will be making some goodie treats this Christmas for my friends with pets. I would recommend this book.

A Must for new puppy owners.......2007-07-14
Wonderful book with many common sense tips for the new dog owner, but do be prepared with tissues as it will make you cry. It will make you laugh as well though. I wish I had bought this book before I got my puppy
A wonderful addition!!.......2006-06-27
This item arrived quickly and in perfect condition. It has been a great joy to read and the photos are enchanting. A must read for every corgi lover!!!
A memoir to a beautiful and courageous corgi.......2006-04-10
As an owner of two lovable welsh corgis and past owner of one who is enjoying life over the Rainbow Bridge (probably frolicking with Mail Order Annie) this book was an absolute joy. The personalities of Corgis are so similar and yet each had its own quirkiness. The story of Annie's demise was so similar to what we experienced with our Indy it was a stirring and poignant memory. Indy also died in our arms on the way to the vet. Indy was also bred at Terenelf. I hope everyone has the experience of life with a dog, it is as rewarding and joyful as Mr. Weinstein beautifully illustrates.
insightful book for dog owners and dog lovers.......2005-05-26
...What really amazed me was how well Mr. Weinstein captured Annie's personality and spirit, and truly brought her to life on every page...
As more people read this book, I predict that a new word will creep into the lexicon...the "corgi-cule," defined by Mr. Weinstein as "the smallest particle of food still discernable to the eyes and/or nose of a Welsh Corgi -- and often too small to be detected by humans (or, possibly, even electron microscopes)."
It is moments like these -- or when his 4-year-old neighbor tells her parents that the stars are Annie's footprints going to Heaven -- that make you laugh and cry and truly touch your heart...
This is a wonderfully insightful book for new puppy-owners, especially Corgi puppy-owners...
The funny thing about Annie is that she was no more special or
extraordinary than my dog or yours. But what Mr. Weinstein manages to do is write the beautiful memoir that I would want to write for my dog.
Heather Gilpatrick, Maryland

We Love Mail Order Annie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-05-16
My son and I read this book shortly after we received our first little Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Minnie and we fell in love with it, just as we have with our little Min Min!!. The book is a wonderful story of Mail Order Annie and her owner, Howard. It is amazing just how smart and special Pems are and Howard tells the story wonderfully with a great amount of cute photos of little Annie. If anyone is considering getting a Pembroke (or if you just love wonderful dog stories), I whole-heartedly recommend Howard's book!! You will soon realize how these little sweetiepies can touch your heart and never let go.....Thanks so much, Howard!!
