I cannot say enough good things!.......2007-09-11
I cannot say enough good things about this book! It is a must for anyone who formulates their horses' diets to any extent and needs specific information on feedstuffs. Particularly helpful if you have a horse with a nutrition-related disease, like insulin resistance or mineral deficiencies.

Book Description
This is the concise, easy-to-use version of Dr. Lewis's Equine Clinical Nutrition, Feeding and Care. It includes a full-color section identifying toxic plants and provides practical information on the diversified effects of different nutrients, feeds and supplements on a horse's athletic performance, reproduction, growth, hooves, appetite, behavior and disease. The book can help prevent common, but expensive problems in horses of all ages.
Customer Reviews:
very useful book.......2007-04-12
This is an incredibly detailed book, especially in terms of the nutritional needs of horses. The nutrient and ration tables in the back have been invaluable for tailoring diets specific to my horses' needs. My only complaint is that the second edition was published in 1996 and it is getting a bit dated. There is no discussion of the newer "nutraceutical" supplements on the market these days, or new research into topics already covered. I am hoping for a third edition, but I suspect I shouldn't hold my breath.
My favorite horse related book.......2007-02-08
This book is very informative. We have 6 horses with different nutritional needs and this book is my favorite "go to" source. It has lots of tables regarding optimal growth rate, nutrient needs etc. It has a very good section on deworming and much more. There are quite a few nutrition related books for less money, however, they are not as detailed as this one and often they cite this book as their source.
Good Book!.......2000-09-09
This truly tells what to and not to let a horse eat.

Customer Reviews:
Great Introduction to Horses!.......2007-07-26
This book is written to young girls, but I read it so I would know at least as much as my daughter does about horses. It's easy reading and a good reference to have, especially if you plan on owning a horse at any time.
Great book for beginners.......2007-02-16
This book has information on every aspect of owning a horse. It's a great book for kids as well as adults. I highly recommend this book for people that want to get into horse ownership.
Missing Details.......2006-02-21
I agree with the review from "From School Library Journal." I did think that this book had excellent pictures and a lot of good information but did not think that it was complete.
The worming section particulary bothered me as it showed a picture of the worm lifecycle and said to "talk to your veterinarian." Considering how much information there is about worming meds this should have been more detailed. I also would have liked the author to strongly stress that a horse buyer should have taken EXTENSIVE lessons before rushing out to buy a horse. A parent buying a horse for a child that doesn't know the basics of horse care and riding (from working with read horses - not ones in books) is a recipe for danger and possibly disaster.
On a tangent, fans of the Riata Ranch Cowboy Girls will be entertained with some of the photos as they appear to have come out of Riata's own book.
People I'd recommend this book to: a fourth to sixth grade girl - I think that they'd love it as a first "serious" reference!
Wonderful!.......2005-10-15
Kids who are interested in horses really need a mentor who is experienced in all aspects of the care and handling of horses. And they could certainly use Horse Care for Kids by Cherry Hill, a horse trainer and breeder. In the past, Hill has been a judge and taught courses in horse management and training. She is also the author of 24 equestrian books.
Horse Care for Kids discusses, in a simple and straight-forward manner, all of the essentials of equine care. It is a thorough book, written in an engaging manner that will appeal to young people.
Hill encourages parents to become involved and as knowledgeable as their children in the care of their horses (and she gives sound reasoning). She discusses body language and behavior, what to look for in a good horse, safety, clothing, grooming and health. She also describes through her writing, drawings and pictures, the parts of a horse, gaits, confirmation, breeds, markings and coloring.
If your child is interested in horses, Hill's book is a great beginning. It's informative and easy to read and provides great information for the beginner. As a child horse owner, I would have been thrilled to own Horse Care for Kids.
Armchair Interviews says: Horse Care for Kids is a great gift for that new or beginning horse owner and rider. We highly recommend!
Great beginner horse book for kids .......2005-07-23
This book has wonderful illustrations depicting how to halter a horse, body language of a horse, horse colors, grooming a horse, and many more practical things to teach you to become a responsible and successful horse or pony owner. It is an easy- to-read book with 116 very informational pages. I highly recommend this book for any child interested in horses, especially one who is thinking about owning a horse.

Customer Reviews:
Makes horse nutrition simple........2004-05-19
This is an excellent book on horse nutrition. It makes nutrition easy to understand and information is presented in an easy to read format. Nutrition concepts (such as protein, fat, carbohydrates, ATP, enzmymes, minerals, vitamins, etc.) and how they are metabolized by the horse are explained. Also included is a chapter dedicated to MSM, DMG, Chondroitin Sulfates, Glucosamine, and Bromelain. The book details how much protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, etc. your type of horse needs (broken down into maintenance horse, pregnancy, lactating, growing, performance, or stallion) and how your horse's health, care and general condition contribute to his ability to absorb these nutrients. Each chapter includes charts highlighting the information presented. Additionally, at the end of the book are charts and formulas to help you determine exactly how much your horse needs of each nutrient and how much he is currently receiving in his diet. They were very easy to use, and this will allow you to see where his diet is deficient. This is a great book for the horse owner who is interested in horse nutrition, wants to optimize what he is feeding his horse, and is curious as to the benefits (or not) of all those supplements on the market.
While you can purchase either the paperback or hardcover here on amazon, if you go to the publisher (www.pixyjackpress.com), the author will sign the book for you. It's a nice touch.
Thank heavens--no hocus pocus!.......1999-12-29
This book offers a very simple, concise look at feeding horses, with an emphasis on SIMPLE. Forage is kept as the cornerstone of the equine diet, and a simple look at protein and mineral requirements is given. Written with U.S. horseowners in mind, this book differs from many books based in the UK, where grain types are much different.
Very entertaining to read, even for a "city girl"........1999-05-24
Rex Ewing captures the reader's interest easily with his relaxed writing style. He makes horse nutrition sound simple and there isn't a lot of confusing technical terms. A straight-to-the-point book.
A proper feeding reference for all horse owners.......1999-01-15
Much more is involved in optimum feeding of a horse than several flakes of hay, a mineral block, and can of grain. Rex Ewing approaches horse nitrition in a thorough, comprehensive manner by explaining the role and importance of nutrients from carbohydrates, fat, and protein to macro and trace minerals to vitamins. He discusses nutritional requirements and the effects of proper and improper nutrition on the maintenance horse, performance horse, stallion, brood mare, nursing foal, weanlings, and yearlings. Whether your horse is healthy or its coat lacks luster, or it displays a loss of appetite or energy, or a weight loss; this book will be helpful. Summary charts are provided throughout and provide a valualbe reference and summary tool. Rex's extensive background and research can benefit the new as well as the veteran horse owner.

Useful Book.......2007-01-11
I received this book as a gift several years ago and have purchased it as a gift several times, since. There are a lot of good recipes for treats and mashes as well as fly spray recipes, home-made fungus cures, etc. You'll refer to it, often.
Overall, good.......2004-07-22
This had some pretty good recipes in it (I recommend Miss Koko's Biscuits), but many were very time-consuming and hard to prepare, like stuffing apples. Also, I found it frustrating that about 70% of the recipes required horse-specific foods like hay cubes, etc. Of course, if you own a horse, this is not a problem. If you want a good, easy, homemade horse treat (besides the ones in the book) that horses love, try mixing:
1 1/2 grated carrots
1 1/2 grated apples
1/2 cup molasses
10 oz. rolled oats
4 oz. wheat flakes
Cook for about one and a half hours at 325 degrees F.
WHAT A FUN BOOK.......1999-09-28
I watched the author prepare a recipe on TV. On a program called Petsburgh USA hosted by animal planet :o) With the test horse there and watching her create these recipies I was amazed :o) Today I have boughten this book right here at Amazon.com..My horses will love these, aside from there regular treats of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and ritz crackers :o)
A book to treasure if you have a horse!.......1998-11-28
This book is great you can finds so many ideas to pamper your horse with. Even though I don't own a horse (yet)all the horses in the barn love taste testing them. Its great for Christmas presents and most of all the recipes are easy and inexpensive, some of the recipes you can eat too!
A great book for all horse lovers!.......1998-08-24
This book provides the beginner to the expert with new and fun ways to papmer your horse with treats you've made. For me the best part is watching him enjoy what I've made as opposed the the store bought varities. It has hints for all around care as well as grooming recipies for flies, tail rubbing, etc. A great addition to anyones horse book collection.

Nutrient Requirements of Horses: Sixth Revised Edition
ASIN: 0683049623 |
Book Description
This solidly clinical and practical text focuses on both nutritional and general care of the horse, whether idle, equine athlete, or general working horse. Also covered are developmental problems linked to nutrition. A color augmented chapter on toxic plants is unique to this text, and provides valuable information and conversion factors for various ages and physical demands.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent information with details and research results!.......1998-05-15
Excellent source of information for those horseowners who want to optimize their horse's care instead of just throwing "any old hay" at them. Even though this book is very similar (almost identical) in content to Lewis' other book, "Feeding and Care of the Horse", I would definitely choose "Equine Clinical Nutrition" instead as it contains literary references to research. Very useful if you need supportive information and are located near a vet-med library to pull papers.
This book should be used in conjunction with the "Nutrient Requirements of Horses" (National Research Council, 1989), as Lewis' appendices do not include the full nutritional content tables of many less-commonly used feeds.
This book is well worth the price, and I am looking forward to the next edition if one is in the works!
Product Description
Few things are as important to the health and welfare of our horses than proper feed and care. Horsemen have known for years that good hay and oats are the foundation for a good horse diet, but we'll take that one step further to tell you how some age-old misconceptions may actually work against your horse's health.
