5 out of 5 stars Dream Book.......2006-06-27

This book will set your imagination on fire and motivate you to turn your ordinary backyard into a mini-paradise. Lots of pictures to drool over, you will find yourself thumbing thru it again and again..

4 out of 5 stars Outdoor Rooms.......2004-07-28

This is a great "thumb thur" book. It has really nice pictures of outdoor areas that are very "architectural".... Not helpful for the "average joe" looking for ideas to create your own backyard/outdoor patio/room.

3 out of 5 stars Great for Entertaining Types.......2002-02-28

If you need ideas on how to create outdoor spaces for entertaining - this book is for you. Dining, lounging, dining, lounging... Even different photos of the same patio have different place settings on the tables to give you dining ideas. After a while, I began looking for spaces where you could do something other than dine, or lounge. Overall, nice photos of nice outdoor spaces, but limited appeal.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh ideas, lots of variety, great mixing of materials.......2001-04-17

When looking for fresh ideas and inspiration on how to create the prefect outdoor space you needn't look any further than this book. From a modern symmetrical porch to lush English gardens, it showcases a wide range of styles. With so much to choose from anyone can find something to suit their taste.

Many of the outdoor rooms have pools. It is amazing how they manage to flawlessly integrate the pools into the environment without making them seem out of place or just thrown there. The magnificent outdoor spaces truly become a part of the home.

I love the combination of styles and how they compliment one another. One room features the creamy white walls of Greece, a timber roof and hot Mexican colors in a cushioned seat. Large color photos tell the story with brief descriptions of each example.

In the back there is a sampler of fine furnishing and accessories form a variety of different styles including historical, rustic, Mediterranean/island, and geometric. There is also a helpful directory of design professionals, photographers and product sources.

3 out of 5 stars If you love concrete & steel, this book is for you!.......2001-04-04

Or if you love browsing Swedish furniture catalogues, buy this book! Unfortunately, I'm not a big concrete & steel fan or heavily into Swedish furniture. It's a lovely book but if, like me, you're looking for garden inspiration or expecting visions that incorporate trees and plants, look elsewhere and save your money. The designs for outdoor rooms in this book left me cold. I gave it a reasonably good rating because I realize that readers who love modern architecture will probably enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Tales for the Church.......2006-08-20

I have read these stories to our church Prayer Breakfast group, as devotionals, over a series of many months. We all enjoy them immensely. The style is easy, engaging and the messages are timeless. I have gone on to present Philip Gulley's other works to the group, but this is still my favorite. Others have borrowed this book from time to time. Philip is getting to be a Presbyterian favorite. Imagine that!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Home Spun Experiences.......2006-03-25

Terrific book. Wonderful, warm, pratical, short stories. Excellent examples of how to treat others. Full of love, respect and fortitude. Have mentioned the book to many of my children as a wonderful source of positive examples as to the approach to life. Made certain to give a copy to my daughter. Each story takes less than 5 minutes to read but were so meaniful I still remember many of them.

I bought the book for my 91 year old mother and she loved it. I read a couple of stories the other day and found them not only inspiring but they made me laugh also.

There are countless books about lifestyles that are inaccessible, either because they are engulfed by abstract ideas or are set in palaces, real or imagined. The Outdoor Living Room: Stylish Ideas for Porches, Patios, and Pools is a rare exception: gorgeous photographs of beautiful outdoor spaces that are accessible, or at least seem to be. Split up into sections that can appeal to anyone-"Modern," "Classic," "In Town," "Romantic," or "Whimsical"--this book can move even the most hardened city dweller, or bring dreamers out of their country homes. The book has a distinct magazine-like flavor, but the rigor of the photographic summation of elements in each section offsets this. The text is uninspiring, usually describing the photographs or making vague generalizations, but no matter, because the photographs are what this book is all about. They are beautiful and plentiful, whetting the appetite for sunny days in our own "outdoor living rooms." --Juliette Cezzar

Book Description

In the summer months and year-round in warmer climates, Americans love spending time outdoors. More and more, people are treating the outdoor spaces on their properties as true extensions of their homes, turning porches, pools, patios, decks, and gardens into outdoor living spaces that serve the same functions as indoor rooms. In The Outdoor Living Room: Stylish Ideas for Porches, Patios, and Pools, acclaimed author Martha Baker offers more than forty-five striking examples of this enlightened approach to outdoor decorating.

The Outdoor Living Room is divided into six chapters, each representing a specific type of outdoor style: Classic, Rustic, Romantic, Modern, Whimsical, and In Town. Six or seven different locations are featured in every chapter, each contributing a different idea or novel aspect of the same style. A multipaged “Components” section appears at the end of each chapter focusing on important elements of outdoor decorating, such as paving and lighting, followed by a heavily illustrated “Ideas” spread with tips on achieving a particular look. None of the magnificent spaces in this book has ever been published before; they range from a Southeast Asian–inspired tropical garden in Florida to a Japanese tea garden atop a New York City roof, from a grand wraparound porch on a classic home facing Lake Michigan to a thoroughly modern all-white patio near Miami. The Outdoor Living Room also includes an extensive resource section, illustrating and describing garden furniture, architectural and landscape elements, and decorative items. Packed with more than 350 full-color photographs, The Outdoor Living Room is at once a practical sourcebook and an inspirational delight.

4 out of 5 stars A carpenter's point of view.......2006-07-10

I bought this book as a gift for my husband, who is a carpenter. He makes furniture as a hobby and has improved our back patio with the addition of a handmade trellis, flower shelves and boxes, and--of course--plants, plants, and more plants.

He says, "This is a book for rich people," but as he gazes at the photos I see him drawing blueprints in his mind. Buy the book for ideas if you are rich and can pay someone else to execute them, or if you are handy and can build them yourself, like my husband. Or buy it because you just like to admire the elegant spaces where the other half plays.

I'm dreaming of an adirondack chaise lounge handmade by my husband, which I'm sure will appear on my patio one day soon.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book.......2001-09-28

Loved this book. Beautiful photos-my only criticism is that I found many photos were repeated through the book in different chapters. I liked the index at the back of the book which listed sources for finding objects featured in photos. I also have Martha Baker's book, Garden Ornaments, and recommend both. These books have a permanent place on my bookshelf and bedside table.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have if you like details.......2007-09-26

We've been working on rehabilitating a Transitional Victorian circa 1909 and have had this book for a year or so. Much of this ornamentation is grander than what is appropriate for our house, but this is a teriffic reference book for us and for me as a professional remodeler/restorer. True, there is no text, but I find the illustrations full of information when pored over carefully. One particularly helpful detail is that each profile within an illustration is provided with a cross-section to help gauge its massing and proportions. Oh, if only we had the lumber available to feasibly replicate all these great details! If you're considering this book, trust me, it'll be the best ten bucks you'll ever spend for your reference library.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of woodwork.......2007-03-08

The photo on the cover is a good sample of what is in this 1873 catalog reprint - many drawings of stairways, cornices, fireplaces, windows. It even has storefronts, 2 barns, and gazebos. It has a few house layouts and exterior elevations, and plaster cornices and ceiling designs. We are building a Victorian house, and the ceiling designs are ones I think I can replicate with Millwork and paint. Lots of neat ideas to ponder and show our carpenter. There is no text - just the index and the plates themselves.

"Whether or not we've come a long way since then, this engaging study of courtship shows that at least half the fun is in reading about getting there." -- St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Informative but it's not light reading........2007-07-12

I read this as part of my regular research for entries that'll be posted on my blog, www.courtshipordating.com.

This book, by far, is the most informative and well-researched one yet.

As I implied in my Review Title, the book is written in a very academic style and abounds in footnotes.

5 out of 5 stars A true gem.......2007-02-04

As a history major, this book is just wonderful. Although a secondary source, it's full of primary sources as well. A great read, easy to understand, a great book and text. I read this for a class and couldn't have picked a better book myself. As for the comments on an updated version or more info in the book abour present day; this book was published 1989, the whole 90's/2000's thing hadn't happened yet. Maybe a sequel would be good? No matter what I highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars well executed on an intriguing topic.......2006-08-15

Bailey does a few things rather well in this book. Courtship and dating makes for an interesting study in the ways in which our culture has changed over the course of the 20th century (although as another reviewer pointed out, an update in which she discusses developments of the 90s would be most welcomed). Her writing is clear, and it's a quick and satisfying read in cultural history. This is one where the title sums up the book nicely, so if you're intrigued, it's probably a good one for you.

4 out of 5 stars Courtship is America.......2002-11-26

A change of courtship occurred from the 1920s and 1940s was the shift from the girl's household to the vechile and away from the watchful eyes of the community. It was a change from sitting at the parlors at the girl's family. A boy would have to be invited to a girl's house causing the woman to have the authority and control, but those things changed. A boy could not go to a girl's house without her permission, but at times changed the guy began to take the authority from the girl. Dating was what was causing the changes of courtship. It moved the girl and the boy outside the home and created a shift from the parlor at the girl's house. Examples would be the replacing of the girl's house with the car.

Bailey's book is great for reading and will take only a day to finish (143 pages). Also, it is a really nice looking book. It covers the roles of consumption and competition in courtship, and the understanding that courtship has changed in American society. I give the book four stars.

5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Story--But Please, an Updated Version!.......2000-06-20

I'm a college professor and I use this book in my classes all the time. Students (male and female) love it, and they remember it. Many of them give the book to their parents to read. Bailey is an engaging writer who employs a wide variety of sources to demonstrate the path from calling to dating to going steady, and the changing meanings of those words. An historian, Bailey provides helpful social and cultural contexts. It's useful gender history. But what the book really needs is an update that would take this topic to the present. The Epilogue doesn't explain enough about dating nowadays, and thus the earlier chapters are best.

4 out of 5 stars A Century of Disaster.......2004-06-10

Studying French history in the Twentieth Century is like slowing down on the highway to check out a terrible car wreck. The wreck may be tragic but its compelling and you have to slow down and look. Poor France, to have gone from the pretensions of World Empire to being the junior partner in the Franco German partnership. What a glorious, slow motion train wreck! A tragedy given malicious pleasure by Gaullist pretensions.

For enthusiasts of French military history, there are a number of great books in English that chronicle this steep decline. Many of these books mention the role of the intelligence. However, like Logistics, the role of Intelligence gets lost in the sexier story of battles and campaigns. Douglas Porch's "The French Secret Services" is the first book in English that looks at the role of the Intelligence and the Secret Services from the Dreyfus Affair to the Rainbow Warrior catastrophe. The hardback edition is 500 pages and has a lot of ground to cover.

Every chapter helps fill in the the peculiar details of French history. I thought the three chapters on the Indochina War were especially good. Porch does an admirable job of detailing the importance of the opium trade and its role in the Dien Bien Phu catastrophe. I wish that somebody in the Pentagon would read Porch's two chapters on the Algerian War. Porch has a lot of interesting things to say about use of torture and direct action by Intelligence Services.

Porch's book is a survey of a hundred years of history. By its very nature, it cannot spend too much time on any one subject. To enjoy this book, the reader needs to have a good understanding of French history in the Twentieth Century. Without this knowledge, this book would be very hard to understand.

Along with Anthony Clayton, Douglas Porch is one of the great historians of French military history. His books on the French Foreign Legion, the Conquest of Morocco and the exploration of the Sahara are classics. His strength as a writer and story teller comes out when he is able to wrap his story around a discrete series of events. A survey history does not lend itself to Porch's talents. Having finished this book, I can only hope that Douglas Porch will one day turn his formidable talents to the French Wars of Decolonization. Douglas Porch is the perfect historian to update Bernard Fall and Alistair Horne.

Book Description

Side-splittingly funny, spine-chillingly spooky, this companion to a Newbery Honor-winning anthology is filled with bad characters who know exactly how to charm.
From the author's note, that takes us back to McKissack's own childhood when she would listen to stories told on her front porch...to the captivating introductions to each tale, in which the storyteller introduces himself and sets the stage for what follows...to the ten entertaining tales themselves here is a worthy successor to McKissack's THE DARK THIRTY. In The Best Lie Ever Told, meet Dooley Hunter, a trickster who spins an enormous whopper at the State Liar's contest. In Aunt Gran and the Outlaws, watch a little old lady slickster ousmart Frank and Jesse James. And in Cake Norris Lives On, come face to face with a man some folks believe may have died up to twenty-seven different times!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Destined to Become a Classic.......2007-03-29

Acclaimed children's author and Newberry Honnor-winner Patricia McKissack offers a new take on African American oral tradition. Blending history, legend, myth and memory, she has spun 10 wonderful "porch lies," or stories, which are sure to charm adults and children alike. Accompanied by cartoonish, even ghoulish drawings, McKissack's prose paints vivid word pictures of slick and sharp-tongued characters who overcome evil and oppressors. Destined to become a classic.

4 out of 5 stars Best Read-Aloud Lies.......2006-12-14

This was my introduction to Patricia McKissack. Had the great pleasure of hearing her read "Change" at a local book festival. I truly enjoyed reading this book to my fourth-grade daughter, trying to duplicate Ms. McKissack's African-American southern drawl. I felt that these very clever and fun stories would be best as read-alouds for elementary-school kids; due to the colloquialism and the tall-tale nature, an adult reader would be better able to give full color and understanding to these outstanding concoctions. Despite being an excellent reader, my child would not read this herself, and instead looked forward each night to having me dramatize the next story. Would be excellent for classroom readings.

5 out of 5 stars Any building a strong African American collection should have PORCH LIES........2006-12-10

Parents and teachers interested in read-alouds will find PORCH LIES: TALES OF SLICKSTERS, TRICKSTERS AND OTHER WILY CHARACTERS to be top-notch. Andre Carrilho provides appealing black and white drawings to spice a series of fun stories revolving around exaggeration and humor, from a little old lady who outwits Jesse James to a professional liar. Any building a strong African American collection should have PORCH LIES.

5 out of 5 stars Tell me lies, tell me sweet little lies.......2006-09-27

On an eight by ten sheet of paper, please explain the distinction between slicksters, tricksters and wily characters using examples of each kind to support your conjectures. You have (looks at the clock) five minutes. Go.

That, if you were a teacher of diabolical means and methods, would be one way of collecting a list of ne'er do wells for your own personal collection. To be frank, though, I wouldn't recommend it. You'd have far more luck if you happened to find yourself in the presence of Patricia McKissack's remarkable, "Porch Lies" and had the wherewithal to snatch it up right quick. Ms. McKissack has always been consistently good, consistently interesting, and blessed with an ear for African-American storytelling and vernacular. Rejoice then when I tell you that her latest venture is a pip. Wonderful to read, both to oneself and aloud to an audience, these are tales that demand to be heard. Hear them then and be content, cause you'll seldom find the like again.

To hear Ms. McKissack tell it, the place to be when she was a child of Nashville, Tennessee was not in the playgrounds or movie theaters of the city but on the porch of 3706 Centennnial. There, Patricia would spend her happy days listening as her grandparents, their friends, and some acquaintances reminisced about some "true" characters they had known in their day. Culling together all the best slickster-trickster tales she knew, McKissack recounts these characters after having processed them from her grandfather's "models" into 9 (or 10, depending on how you count) wholly new and original porch lies. Each story in this book is preceded by a small reminiscence of the person who was telling that tale and how they'd think to tell it in the first place. Then the real fun starts. We see poor Clovis Reed having his soul weighed against a feather and James Booker Black outwitting the devil for his own soul. We see Mingo Cass outwit a whole barbershop full of men and, in my personal favorite, sweet Dooley Hunter tell the greatest lie ever told. Every tale is recounted with a familiar feel but stands as its own original story on closer inspection. To read the book is to relax into the story and feel that you yourself are swinging on a porch swing, hearing the tales told on a breezy summer night.

The range of stories really make it worth a reader's while as well. You've got your tall tales alongside your moral ones. You've lovable scalawags and the not-so-lovable prigs that find them a nuisance. The gullible exist here alongside the exceedingly clever (but lazy). Ms. McKissack's wordplay is just lovely as well. Who can resist a line like, "Cooley was a one-of-a-kind in a one-size-fits-all world"? Each story rolls trippingly off the tongue, demanding that a person read it aloud to someone. Could be to a family member or a classroom. It doesn't matter who, really. Everyone can find something in this book to get a kick out of. And it's all thanks, in part, to Ms. McKissack's powerful grasp on the English language.

The problem with this book, if problem you can call it, is that it has a tendency to seep into a person's daily life. For example, I recently attended a fantastic performance of August Wilson's play, "Seven Guitars". Not ten minutes into the show, I found myself looking at characters that could've leapt from the pages of McKissack's book for all that they embodied the true spirit of tricksterism. Still, it's fun to read Ms. McKissack's tales and see little elements that may have cropped up in your own experience. For example, when we hear about Robert Johnson who sold his soul for success at the Crossroads, I suddenly remembered the film "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?", and the man in it who suffered the same fate. Or there's the moment when Clovis Reed's bedroom turns into a courtroom and his soul stands on trial. Sound like any old movies you may have seen in the past? Ms. McKissack isn't above giving the small shout-out to her own books as well. When she says, "Papa Jack's porch lies were usually about little girls who outsmarted foxes or captured the wind", you'd have to be fairly out of it (or simply uninformed) not to pick up on this obvious reference.

To be honest, had I thought about pairing this author's words alongside computer-animated figures the very notion of it would have straightened my hair. I could be forgiven for my ignorance in this manner, however, since artist Andre Carrilho is new to the world of children's book illustration. His style is one-of-a-kind and I don't know who the genius was who thought to pair him with Ms. McKissack, but the words "match made in heaven" have a tendency to pop up when the two are involved. Each story gets just one illustration, which is a true pity. Fortunately, the pics are so good that you instantly forgive the author his miserly tendencies. The range of depth and light is impressive, yes. But even better is the fact that parts of these illustrations appear to also be hand-drawn. And these elements seem to fit in seamlessly with the rest of the picture as a whole. There sits Mingo Cass getting his shoes shined and as you can see, his socks, the cloth on his foot, and the shoeshine boy's shirt appear to be drawn the old-fashioned way. A couple pages in and Cake Norris is being glared at by an angel with thin-lined wings. There's an arch and a lengthy curve to each picture that somehow manages to convey both movement and realism while remaining clearly drawn. I don't think Mr. Carrilho could work this well if he were to illustrate an entire picture book. Here, however, his skills have been used to their best advantage.

To be honest, there's no good reason in the whole wide world why you shouldn't already own a copy of this book. It's one of those titles you hold up and feel like you should have bought years and years ago, even if it's just been published. No excuses allowed. Purchase forthwith.

5 out of 5 stars We love Mr. Putter and Tabby!.......2006-11-03

Everyone should read this simple, fun book! We bought this for our daughter's 7th birthday because she checked it out of the library so many times over the last few years. We like all of the Mr. Putter and Tabby books, but this one is her favorite. It is well-written, humorous, and perfectly illustrated. There are funny surprises in this story, and it makes us laugh every time we read it. What a great book! We highly recommend Mr. Putter and Tabby Paint the Porch!

5 out of 5 stars A treat for all of us........2006-08-18

You really cannot go wrong with Mr. Putter and Tabby. My 3 year old and 5 year old boys adore this book, we read it again and again and each time the picture of Tabby all pink makes the boys howl and me giggle... what more can you want from a book than that.

My three year old daughter Serena loves this book, we've read it and our two other Mr.Putter and Tabby books every night since we got it. she always laughs at mTabby's pink whiskers. This series of books is fun to learn to read from and a frolic for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars We love Mr. Putter and Tabby!.......2001-08-17

My children, ages three and five, adore Mr. Puuter and Tabby, and I believe this is Ms. Rylant's funniest rendition of their adventures so far. When the box arrived, I read the book alone because I couldn't stand to wait. Ms. Rylant uses a nice collection of short and medium-length words for beginning readers, and the story rollicks along. Mr. Howard's illustrations capture the subjects' expressions beautifully. We checked these books out of the library so often that we finally ordered some to keep.

5 out of 5 stars A laugh-out-loud book ..........2001-07-10

My children and I have been enjoying Mr. Putter and Tabby books ever since we accidentally ran across them at the library.

This charming story is truly brought to life through the illustrations. Ms. Rylant does a beautiful job of crafting her characters with words, but Arthur Howard gives them the final touch with his lively illustrations. The facial expressions on the characters often send us into giggles even before we've read the story! We have come to love Mr. Putter and his fine cat Tabby as well as their next-door neighbors, Mrs. Teaberry and her good dog Zeke.

I love these stories because the humor touches the heart and funnybone of both children and adults. We have shared some wonderful moments through these books. I feel they also give an opportunity for children to peek into the lives of the elderly and understand that their thoughts and feelings are not all that different. Mr. Putter is truly just a little boy in grown up clothing.

I highly recommend all of the Mr. Putter and Tabby books, but I'd have to say this is our favorite.
