Book Description
Lots of people enjoy making or buying treats for their pets, but wouldn't it be wonderful to cook a real meal for the four-legged member of the household? Quirky yet practical, these cookbooks provide recipes that are nutritionally balanced and veterinarian-approved. They even include sections on "tandem" recipes - recipes for humans that, with slight modifications, can also be served to pets.
REAL FOOD FOR CATS is The Cat Lover's Cookbook, completely revised with new recipes, new information, and all-new illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Are we all rating the same book?.......2007-05-12
I bought a copy of this book and haven't seen any recipes that call for onions. Granted, I've only made about half the recipes so far, but I've seen nothing that will harm our cats. Two of the recipes I've made did call for garlic but the amount was so small that it wouldn't have any adverse effect.
I've made the Tuna Cakes and the recipe did not call for onions. The fish chowder recipe makes 5 servings - no mention of onion, and only one clove of garlic was needed.
I'm also pleased about the various safety tips throughout the book. I recommend this book to all.

I didn't see onions.......2007-05-12
I got a copy of this book, looked at the Tuna Cakes recipe and it did not list onions. Also in the back of the book with the human recipes it informs to leave onions out of the cat's meal. Not sure why there is a difference but just wanted to inform that I didn't find onions in the recipes. ????
Vet approved???.......2007-04-23
Onions can cause Heinz's Anemia in cats. I would not take my cat to any vet that approved feeding onions to a cat. This book has dangerous recipes. Spend your money on better book.
Buyer beware and ABBEY is wrong.......2007-04-17
UPDATE 5/14/07: Because there is a mystifying dispute between those readers who see onions (harmful to cats) in these recipes and those who don't, here's an easy way to see for yourself and make an informed decision. Use the excellent Amazon feature "Search Inside This Book." Either key in the word "onion" and click "Go" to see how many pages list onions in the recipes (I find 22) or choose the "Surprise me" option and click it repeatedly -- it took only 4-5 clicks for me to find "Kitty Tacos" with 1/2 cup onion listed as the second ingredient.
Original April 2007 review:
WARNING: Onions are toxic to cats, and these recipes are full of onions.
While a few recipes in this book may be safe, it's hard to trust that because many recipes specifically for cats contain onion -- and ABBEY, whose review 32 people found helpful, is dead wrong that this is only the "people recipes at the end of the book." (Sorry, ABBEY, but I did read and comprehend the information.)
Don't be swayed by my saying so -- please judge for yourself. With the pet food recall, we all need to watch out for each other and, more importantly, for our precious cats. Below, I have copied page 23 verbatim, and it is NOT one of the "people recipes" at the end of the book:
"Tuna Cakes
Cats will race even faster to the sound of a whirring can opener if they think you're about to prepare this tasty and nutritious dish.
2 eggs
1 6-ounce can tuna, drained, and flaked
1 small ONION, finely chopped
4 slices bread, cubed into kitty size bits
1/2 teaspoon iodized salt
1 teaspoon brewer's yeast
1 teaspoon bonemeal
2 tablespoons margarine
1. Beat the eggs lightly in a bowl. Add the tuna, ONION, bread cubes, salt, brewer's yeast, and bonemeal. Mix thoroughly until moistened.
2. Form into small patties. Melt the margarine in a skillet and fry the patties until golden brown. When cool, crumble each patty and serve.
Makes 3 to 5 servings."
On page 25, the Fish Chowder specifically for cats calls for 1 glove garlic, minced and 2 tablespoons finely chopped ONION. On page 27, the Boogaloo Shrimp, again, in a recipe supposedly specifically for cats, the first ingredient is 1/2 chopped ONION. Page 32, the recipe for Chicken with Greens, there is a warning about introducing cats gradually to greens because they can be sensitive to it, but no warning about the 1 clove garlic in the recipe or on page 33, the Chicken Salad that calls for 1 tablespoon finely chopped ONION. The "people" recipes ABBEY refers to, called "Tandem Cooking" by the author, do not begin until page 81.
I am extremely disappointed I bought this potentially dangerous book and applaud the reviewer Cordelia Wright who is researching the vet who wrote the preface.
This is not a time to stand on ceremony when pet health is at stake from commercial food -- we need reliable sources of information about safe food, and this book is not it for the reasons previous reviewers have stated. Buyer, please beware.
I have complained to Amazon about continuing to promote and sell this book in the face of the pet food scare (a sick irony that people avoiding tainted commercial food turn to a so-called "vet-approved" recipe book containing recipes that will harm their cats!), and I have written a complaint to the book's publisher. I'm also pursuing getting a journalist involved to warn the public and find out how this book's author can claim these recipes are "vet-approved" when no vet would say giving onions to cats is safe.
Dangerous Recipes.......2007-04-10
I am so disappointed. Continuing to sell/publish this book is irresponsible. As two recent reviews have noted, the recipes are full of ONIONS and, occasionally, GARLIC, both toxic to cats (onions can cause Heinz's Anemia). One other review wrote that the onions were confined to the "people food" section of the book, but this is not true. There are onions everywhere. I agree that this book cannot possibly be vet approved, and I intend to do some research into the guy, a vet, who wrote the preface. His Latin is fake, and so, to my great disappointment, is the potential security and well being proffered by these recipes. I am going to return the book. Even if one leaves the garlic out, can one really trust that the author's nutrional advice is sound ? With great disappointment, I recommend that you stay far away from this book, even though the illustrations are charming.

Feline Breeds - Kiss of Heat By Lora Leigh Book 3 in the Feline Breeds series. They've waited a decade to come together. Long years filled with unbearable pain, and soul-wrenching torment that have changed them both. Left wounds that have laid their souls bare. Kane, a relentless warrior, lost more than his heart to Sherra in a night of mating passion that marked them both for life. But news of her death ripped his soul apart. For years he has fought to avenge the death of the woman he loved more than his own life, by revealing the deceit and cruelty of the Council that created the Breeds. But Sherra didn't die. In a cruel and evil twist she was convinced by her sadistic handlers that the man she had given her body, heart and soul to had betrayed not only her, but the child she carried â and lost. Amid the rapidly escalating violence against the Feline Breeds, Kane and Sherra learn that there's more to mating than just the "heat", just as there's more to love than just the sexâ¦

Kiss of Heat.......2007-09-16
This was a good stand alone book but also gave a lot of background to the following books in this series.
love Lora Leigh's books.......2007-09-16
this series is hot hot hot, I almost have all her breed books now and they are worth reading....
Kane and Sherra -- at last!.......2007-09-05
Ever since I read the first book in the Breed series, I have been drawn into the fantasy world of Lora Leigh's genetically altered-humans. Kane and Sherra's story is also what I have been waiting for, wanting to read more about their tragic affair.
Eleven years ago, Sherra fell in love with the man who has not only brought her physical pleasure, but a safety haven as well. He had come to her and made her feel like a woman loved, only to leave her with the promise of returning. As a Breed, she was created, not born; trained to be a soldier. He was the sole thing that made her think there was more to her than a genetically engineered creature. But his desertion killed whatever feelings she had. For over a decade, she survived for her Pride alone. But despite how hard she tried to forget him, her genes yearn for the touch of her mate, constantly tormenting her with those bittersweet memories. Now as she comes face to face with the man who destroyed her heart and her baby, Sherra has only revenge in her mind.
Kane Tyler was one of the soldiers sent to the Genetics Council Labs. Realizing what the Breeds were being subjected to, he made a promise to Sherra that he would return and rescue the whole Pride. But when he did, the labs have been destroyed and he was led to believe that Sherra was killed. For years he has worked hard to avenge the woman he loved, forever haunted by her memories. But now that fate has brought them back together, it would take every ounce of their trust to overcome the pain they have both suffered from. And it would take every bit of this warrior's strength and determination to convince his mate that the only way to exorcise the ghosts of the past is for them to come together.
I have enjoyed reading about these two from the very beginning and enjoyed how Kane has constantly taunted Sherra in the hope of destroying her defenses. It was good to finally read their story and see them appease the gnawing hunger that comes with their need for each other. Some moments are bittersweet, adding to the poignancy of their relationship. Lora Leigh continues with this addictive series and she certainly knows how to keep her readers wanting more by giving us glimpses of the other Breeds and hinting on the stories to come in the future. I am looking forward to reading more of her novels.
Smoking!.......2007-07-08
Boy, does Lora Leigh know how to ride sex scenes. I had to make sure that I was reading the book by myself. I made sure not to bring it to read in the doctor's office. However, I love all of her books!
This book is graphic as are all of hers. I was so glad to read the story of Kane and Sherra. I waited for a while for this one. Sherra is the one with cat DNA. She knew Kane back when she was in the labs. She felt that Kane just left her to be experimented on and let their child be taken and she feels betrayed. Kane was under the impression that Sherra died at the labs. Well, imagine what they think when they see each other again. No, it isn't good to see you.
Sherra acts cold and mean to Kane. She ignores him, yells at him, wants to hurt him. Kane keeps trying to get her back into his arms. However, he is trying to be cool about it. Well, I am sure that you can imagine the ending. These books are pretty predictable but fun. I do not even think the ending matters. It is the heat and sexual tension between these two.
The animal breeds books are a great series to read. If you liked this one, I recommend starting with the Breeds book one. I am sad that my library does not carry her books. However, I do not hesistate to buy them.
Loved it!.......2007-05-23
I couldn't wait to read this book from the lead in to it in the previous book. Kane was quite a man and Sherra was his perfect mate. All the trials they went through really made me feel for them. If you love the Breeds series you'll love this book.

The Man Within.......2007-09-17
This was an excellant book. I really enjoyed this second book in the series. It was fast paced and I this is a fine stand alone read as well.
Feline breeds 2 - the man within.......2007-07-09
As a lover of paranormal romances with some good sex scenes, Lora Leigh's books certainly fit the bill and then some! The idea of the human animal hybrid is not new, but I love Lora's take on the idea. My interest was piqued initially because I like wereanimal stories and I thought Lora's were of that type. I enjoyed the books (I've read a few now)and althought some of the sex scenes went further than I was used to (or quite comfortable with) I can see that they fit the context of the storyline. I will certainly continue to read this author.
21st Century Woman.......2007-07-07
Tabor and Roni's story is off the hook! Roni and Taber is the newest Breed couple hit with the mating frenzy. It makes Tabor all he man and Roni strong and fiesty. One of the most memorable lines for me was when Roni demanded Taber to tell her what gave him the right to allow her to do something. Taber response is truly the tone for the whole book...."When I took you to the floor and mounted you, I took the right to protect you as well. Mate."
Although you can read this book out of the series order, I highly recommend reading Callan's story first in Tempting the Beast and segue into this one.
The erotic scenes involves [...] - so if this makes you blush.
And the romance scenes are so compassionate. I especially appreciate how Leigh brings up other characters from other books in this series which gives you the sense of really being a part of their family and their world... also you are hooked in reading their story as well.
Enjoyed Breeds 2 .......2007-07-05
I really enjoyed reading this book. It has an excellent blend of exotic, romance and action to keep you interested to the end. I can't wait to read more of the Breeds story line.
Book Review .......2007-05-25
I am so glad that I purchased this book. I love reading paranormal books and this is one of the best. I would recommend this series of books to anyone.
Book Description
In this companion to her successful introduction to cat behavior Think Like a Cat, Pam Johnson-Bennett, the award-winning author and feline behaviorist, shows how adding another cat to your home does not have to be the start of a kitty apocalypse. Although cats are often misunderstood as natural loners, Johnson-Bennett shows how to plan, set up, and maintain a home environment that will help multiple catsand their ownerslive in peace. Cat vs. Cat will help readers understand the importance of territory, the specialized communication cats use to establish relationships and hierarchies, and how to interpret the so-called bad behavior that leads so many owners to needless frustration. Offering a wealth of information on how to diffuse tension, prevent squabbles and ambushes, blend two families, or help the elder kitty in your family, Cat vs. Cat is a welcome resource for both seasoned and prospective guardians of cat families large and small.
Customer Reviews:
Wish I'd read this book sooner..........2007-10-07
Even if you don't have a fighting situation on your hands, you will learn something valuable about cats from this book. Such sensible, practical advice and very welcome.
I recommend this book to all my cat parent friends.......2007-09-29
This book has opened my eyes and has given me a new perspective on feline behavior. She explains the behavior of a cat to a T and gives expert advise on keeping the peace in a multicat household. Too many times have I seen cats dumped because their human guardians fail to realize their natural behavior. Cats are too often punished for behavior that is completely natural to them (ie. scratching). She explains de-clawing alternatives and gives great insight on litterbox issues. I highly recommend this book.
Lots of Useful Information.......2007-08-23
I found this book to be both informative and entertaining. I thought I already knew a lot about cats (having them for about 15 years), but even I learned quite a few little tidbits I did not know. And Pam informs you of all this information with a sense of humor. Great little read for anyone interested in cats.
Author has too much time and money, and obfuscates with the best of them.......2007-07-30
While there is some useful information in the book, my opinion is that I understand cats as well as this woman, which is to say nobody really understands them very well at all.
As an example, every cat of hers (3) gets its own litter box in its own space. And you must sift and scoop each box a minimum of twice a day. And no automated boxes, God forbid! She makes a good point that you're not as on top of any medical issues with an automated box, but the same thing is true with your kids, and you don't keep them in diapers! Another example is clearing off vertical spaces for your cats, or get cat trees. I have neither the space nor the time for this kind of nonsense, nor do most of the cat owners I know. Especially the space!
The other thing that annoyed me was the tendency to over-complicate some of the issues: "it could be this ... or that ... or ..." to the point where it's not even helpful. More important, making a major production out of processes like bringing a new cat into the environment. Operation Enduring Freedom this ain't! Yes cats are complicated little animals (aren't we all), but they take their cue from how much nonsense you're willing to tolerate from them, and if you make a big production out of things, they will certainly push that envelope.
For someone new to cats, this could be a good book, but if you've already had cats successfully for some time, save your money and trust your instincts.
Foresee the problems.......2007-05-26
Up until now I had not much use of the advice contained in the book as I have only one cat. However I am now well informed in case I decide to have more purring around me. The book is well written and informative. In my opinion it is a good reference book. Well worth having. For some funny cat stories consider the series of Why Some Cats are Rascals, Book 2. great story and very steamy.......2007-07-24
This book had a great story line and I like the way Lora Leigh writes
Breeds 1 Success.......2007-07-05
What a marvelous series. It held my attention to the end and I couldn't wait to read the next book. This series is a paranormal, exotic romanic hit.
Loved It.......2007-05-08
I had read Megans Mark and Harmony's Way before I read this and have to say I enjoyed those more. But i did enjoy this very much. I love Lora Leigh's books, I am now hooked.
Premise has potential, but...Disappointing.......2007-04-06
The premise of people with animal DNA I thought had potential for interesting differences and conflicts. Having read and enjoyed other paranormal and "romantica" novels, the reviews had me looking forward to this one. The main characters were attractive enough, and although the plot was fairly predictable the book's biggest disappointment was that the hot encounters between Callan and Merinus was so motivated by an overwhelming chemical dependency (via Callan's pheromones) that the sex was disturbingly and distractingly involuntary--like a drug addiction. If this sounds like it would bother you, look elsewhere.

Concise and Well-Organized.......2006-08-04
I'm a small animal massage therapist but have not taken a course in Traditional Chinese Medicine yet. This book is very helpful for giving a good background for what seem to be complicated concepts and multiple ideas. Acu-Cat is written in simple terms with a well-organized format. For someone who did not have any training in bodywork, this might be a bit too much but still a good intro to TCM. I'm reading Acu-Cat along with Four Paws, Five Directions and find the former an excellent resource for the more detailed topics.
Acu-Cat is a "must read" for every vet, vet tech, & massage therapist who did not have TCM in their basic curriculum.
PURRRRfect book for cat lovers!.......2004-11-29
Cats are such sensitive little souls, that's what makes them so responsive to acupressure. Snow and Zidonis have created a guide to feline acupressure that clearly describes how to perform an acupressure treatment, including lots of diagrams. Best of all, the book has specific treatments for common feline conditions like kidney problems, aging issues, hindquarter weakness, calming, and much more. My cats love it, they say "PURRRRRRRRR". Your cats will be in 7th heaven and will definitely have all 9 lives.

The most used book on my shelf.......2005-10-17
Whenever I encounter a new disease, or need to refresh my memory about one I haven't seen lately, I reach for this book first. I find it to be concise, informative, and useful. While other medical texts make for good fireside or bedtime reading, this one cuts to the chase, and is useful in the midst of a busy veterinary schedule.
I use this book as my "nerd book", jotting notes in the margins when I learn something new about a disease from reading journals. Overall I am quite impressed at how up-to-date and complete the information is vis-a-vis JAVMA, the Compendium for Continuing Education, etc. I also appreciate that this book comes out in new additions often enough to keep up with the rapid changes in veterinary medicine.
must be on a vets library.......2005-09-29
very helpful in learning details about diseases and drugs we use.Easy to use the book and easy to understand.Thank you for the opportunity for me to receive this book to Turkey.
Great Resource.......2004-01-27
I got this book a couple of years ago on the advice of my mentor. This book has really helped me out in school(esp. in my Problem-Based Learning classes). It is pretty easy to understand, is very concise, and it includes many commmon and uncommon diseases of small animals. However, not all information about specific diseases is included. This resource should just be used as a starting point. The formulary is useful, as is the section about diagnostic test results. I just wish they would come out with a 5-Minute Consult-Exotics Edition
Great user-friendly reference for vet students.......2001-05-23
This book is great when you just need the down and dirty on a disease, and don't want to wade through a 50-page description in the heavy-duty references. It was also very useful during second-year, when you're just trying your hand at figuring out the diseases, and need a little confirmation of your diagnosis and treatment plans. Or, when you're totally clueless and need help get started in the right direction. Fair warning, faculty usually won't accept it as 'reference' especially if you're trying to argue a point, but during a recent open-book final, I brought mine in anyway and there was practically a mob of other students rushing over to check out one thing or another.
5 Minute Veterinary Consult: Canine and Feline (CD-ROM for W.......2001-03-24
Tilley's 5 -Minute Veterinary Consult book has been an extremely valuable asset to my library. When the CD-Rom came out, it was even more useful in that immediate and current information can be retrieved much faster than picking up a book. It is faster since topics related to a case can be searched for and reviewed with a touch of your mouse. This information can be quickly printed and given to clients to further understand their pets diagnosed condition. This printed information alone is priceless! A client that has something in hand and can follow and confirm their veterinarian's diagnosis and treatment, helps establish the trust a client needs to have in their pets doctor.
I reach for my 5- Minute Vet Consult CD-rom more than any other resource in my library. It is very accurate and has a surprising amount of detail to assist in the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of each topic. The drug search is a very helpful formulary for those quick reference needs. The most recent CD has a good number of cytology and radiographic images attached to the topics. These can be enlarged to see more closely the great detail.
In my opinion the 5-Minute Veterinary Consult CD-Rom was one of the best reference investments for my practice. It is definitely the most utilized reference I have. Time is money and this has saved me many steps and thus time and money. Every practice needs this reference without doubt!

Tempting treats for... whom???.......2007-05-11
I cooked 12 recipes from this book following the instructions exactly. ALL my 7 cats HATED EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM!!!
Good book, GREAT illustrations.......2007-01-04
These are some good recipes, but what really shines is the illustrations. I will be watching Troy Cummings' career with great interest.
Tempting Treats.......2006-12-15
I'm not sure why the Tuna recipe was not successful for one reviewer, because it is one of my cats' favorites (I have 4 finicky felines). Of the 4 recipes they have tried, the Tuna treats are definitely at the top of their list. While tuna is not my favorite smell, I didn't find it too offensive once cooked and the cats went wild (they even sat up, which is usually reserved for cheese treats). I would recommend this cookbook for any cat owner who wants wholesome treats that are not crammed with fillers like the store-bought ones are. I agree that this is a nice gift idea for any cat lover and have an extra copy on-hand just for that occasion.
Delightful Treat.......2006-12-14
I found this cat treat cookbook to be just delightful! The recipes are fast, easy, and healthy too. What a fun way to show your cats they are special to you. There is even a recipe for catnip tea. The artwork adds a charming touch. This little book would make a great gift for any cat lover on your list.
my cats are finicky.......2006-12-12
After years of buying kitty treats from the store only to have at least one (out of three of my cats) turn up their noses, I decided to try making my own.
With the help up this book I have finally come up with a couple of recipes to make treats that all my cats love (and make extra to give to friends with cats). I also feel good that that I can control the quality and freshness of the ingredients.

I've read quite a number of Jack Canfield's Chicken Soup For the Soul series, so you can imagine my delight when I found out that there was a book dedicated to us feline fans...I've had cats all my life, so many of the stories contained in this book I can identify with. So many of the stories in this book are bittersweet, and any cat lover will see themselves in these pages...Also, I highly recommend having a box of tissues handy while reading this book.
Great book for cat lovers!.......2007-07-05
Never read a chicken soup book but I heard how great they were. I loved this book! If you are a cat lover, you should definitely get this book for yourself or as a gift for someone else.
A Must for Cat Lovers.......2007-03-26
I received this book from my vet after I had to put my cat to sleep because of cancer. At first I couldn't read the book because I cried after reading each story. After a few weeks I decided to try again and started reading. I still cried, but this book made me realize just how much love and companionship is offered by our four-legged friends, and how much I really appreciated the time I had with my cat. This is must for all cat lover's.
