5 out of 5 stars For the collector of sewing items.......2002-08-09

Helen Lester Thompson's Sewing Tools & Trinkets is a collector's identification and value guide, covering everything from thimbles and needle holders to toys and trinkets. A very specific reference for the collector of sewing items.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source for the collector.......1999-05-06

This is an excellent source for the collector of antique sewing implements. Full color illustrations of all priced objects make it easy to identify and place a value on pincushions, needlecases, thimbles and more. Not much text but price guides are generally short on text. If a price guide is what you want, I recommend this one.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Poor excuse for a Guide.......2007-09-06

The first thing to notice is a lack of an index. Why call something a guide if you don't provide a way to find information? The book, called an Identification and Value Guide covers only four brands of knives. It would better be called an extensive look at Case Knives and short look at a few others. If you are looking for a general guide for collecting knives, there must be better books available.

1 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2006-05-17

I will be returning this book. I should have read the reviews before buying because one reviewer described what I just discovered with the arrival of "Knives and Razors." It is a huge, detailed encyclopedia of Case (307 pages), with a bone-thrown to Queen/Shatt & Morgan (84 pages), and Remington (86 pages). It is advertised as an all-encompassing guide to American knives. It is not, although Case collectors will love its focus/detail.

I collect vintage knives, mostly the Texas toothpick pattern, but not Case. An incomplete list of manufacturers in my collection includes Parker, Buck, Ka-Bar, Shrade, Robeson, Hammer Brand, Imperial, Camillus, Winchester, Smith & Wesson, Smokey Mountain, A.G. Russell. NONE of these brands are given a word in the "American Premium Guide to Knives and Razors."

5 out of 5 stars As far as current guides to knives go this is a great one........2005-08-10

Jim Sargent's book, American Premium Guide to knives and razors is not a let down if you are into Case or Queen knives. If you have bought other guides and been disappointed by how many advertisements were in it you will be very happy with this book because there are none.

Most of the pictures are black and white but they are detailed and easy to see. There are color pics and these are quite good but few. Even still, going through the pictures is akin to walking into a knife museum.

There are sections in the book for Crandall and Remington but not as detailed or lengthy as the Case and Queen sections. Still these smaller sections are very good compared to anything else I've found.

The Case fixed blade section of this book is about as good as any I have ever run across with information I have never found anywhere else for any price. This section even details the differences in sheaths from different eras and how to date the knife by the sheath if necessary.

I would recommend this book to any Case, Queen or Remington collector. It is not going to cover other manufacturers in detail so if you are looking for values on your Spyderco knives this is not the book you want. What it does cover for the Case, Queen, and Remington collector is perhaps some of the most comprehensive and detailed information for these knives as you can find anywhere at this writing. It is a great guide for these brands.

I've said, "WOW, I did not know that" more times since acquiring this book than any other knife guide I've ever purchased.

1 out of 5 stars not recommended.......2005-08-01

The book covers mostly Case and four other makers. It is
advertized as a guide to help you identify and date individual
knives or whole collections. If your collection is limited to
these five makers then you could be satisfied, however if you
collect throughout the industry you will want a refund. It should be described properly.

5 out of 5 stars A brief comment.......2005-03-27

No one book can completely cover even one subfield of knife collecting and values anymore, but this is probably one of the five or six essential reference works for knife collectors. I bought it mainly because I've been a case collector in the past, and it's also especially strong on pocket knives, and Case is the most well known and most collectible of the factory production pocket knives. The book covers all the other main names in that field, including Buck, Schrade, Remington, Queen, Camillus, Parker, Kershaw, Schatt and Morgan, Winchester, and many other lesser known names. But it also covers fixed blades, limited editions and semi-custom, and custom knives are covered as well. But this book is considered to have the strongest coverage of any collector's book on Case, and it's probably an essential reference work for any Case and other American pocket knife collector.

2 out of 5 stars Snap-On or OUT?.......2007-03-24

I was not happy with this book for a small time collector that I am. I collect many things and one of them being Snap-On (items). I found in this book with Tools ONLY being about 10 pages of pictures not enough about these items as well as many items that have been left out. The same go's for these other two catagories. Tool Boxes ONLY about 6 pages and Commemorative items only about 8 pages. I understand we can not meet ever catagory for ever collector in the Snap-On world. But it should have been covered alot more and or better on it. It was NOT just the above mentioned catagory that I found this it was as well as other catagories not mentioned in this book. Also I notice not much information was spoken on most of the items in this book. Such as how many have been made, They should of shown the diffrent types of commemoratives items, tools, tool boxes, ect. that Snap-On put out. Well you be the judge of it for youself. I wasn't happy with this book for the price, nor with Caroline's imput. I guess that's why it's called UNAUTHORIZED guide to Snap-On.

-Added chapters on modern folding knives and plier/tool knives.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Real Facts on This Guide.......2006-05-25

Krause asked me to update specific articles in Levine's Guide #5 by employing the SAME WRITERS Bernard used. Krause removed some material from some of the other articles. They also added 16 or so pages to the book, and told me what they wanted. Again, I used some of Bernard's writers, and a couple noted collectors suggested by some manufacturers. If Bernard's writers are so bad, why did HE employ them? Bernard later bad-mouthed me in Knife World regarding this book. I contacted Mr. Houston Price, the publisher and friend of mine, noting this wasn't a very smart move (lawsuits?), and Price sent me a later copy of Knife World with a written retraction by Bernard. To this day, Bernard will not speak to me even though we see one another maybe 10 times a year, almost face-to-face. But, that's his right. Most who have savaged Book 5 have a right to do so. I do feel they should know what they are speaking about first. Bud

      1 out of 5 stars Hack Job.......2005-06-17

Publishing has sunk to a new low with this edition. Levine had nothing to do with it, and the publisher hired some dealer to give prices made from thin air. Save your money and buy the 4th edition again. The 4th edition remains the standard in the hobby.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your hard-earned dollar on this book........2002-05-28

I'm not a publisher, but I bet I could compile a better book than this. I feel like I've wasted my money. The book is incomplete, hard to index and the pictures are shoddy. What more needs to be said?

2 out of 5 stars Wheres the Beef?.......2002-05-07

Maybe calling this the "stripped down for racing version" would have been more appropriate. It certainly isn't the family station wagon, full of Knife Information, that it was before Krause slashed all the pertinent data out of it. The 5th Edition is a classic case of creating a new version just for the sake of sales. That may not have been so bad, except they removed much important data which knife collectors use to identify and collect knives. Then, to make it appear they had changed it, they added superflous "bloatware," in an effort to make it look different. If Levine's 4th Edition didn't exist, it would be better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, but you can still get the 4th Edition so that option can be avoided. One of the major facinations of old knives is their level of handmade quality. The historical record tells us that newer is not always better.

      1 out of 5 stars A big disappointment.......2002-04-16

First of all, Bernard Levine WAS NOT involved with this book even though it contains his name. Krause publication owns the rights to Levine and due to problems between the author and publisher Levine has publically stated that he does not support this book--thus, the unassuming buyer believes Levine wrote this book. This is simply not true. This is a huge warning sign. No one can write a book on Knives and their values like Levine. This book was edited by Bud Lang, the former editor of Knives Illustrated and though I highly respect Bud and miss him at the helm of KI, this wasn't his baby and it shows.

In my opinion there is not enough new material here to warrant a new book. Yeah, there are a few new pictures and an interesting article on William Scagel but there are some very confusing values in the book and according to Levine they were inflated and do not reflect the current market value of many collectable knives.

Levine wrote a very interesting editorial regarding "his" book that was published in Knife World last summer. ...

      You be the judge.

Since Bernard Levine does not endorse this book I would buy the 4th edition from Amazon.com instead if you can.
