Follow your nose to a hilarious Stink-fest no kid will want to miss!

GROSS ME OUT! STINK-O! SKUNKSVILLE!

Stink Moody’s class is going on a field trip to the Gross-Me-Out exhibit at the science museum, and he can’t wait to see the Vomit Machine, the Burp-O-Meter, and the Musical Farts. Best of all, when he gets to the Everybody Stinks exhibit, Stink discovers that his very own nose has amazing sniffing abilities — and he learns that some people have real jobs sniffing stuff for NASA! Soon the junior olfactory wiz is engrossed in toilet water, corpse flowers, and all things smelly, and he and Sophie of the Elves are set to go toe-to-toe in a stinky sneaker contest. Will Stink’s fetid footwear be foul enough to earn him a Golden Clothespin Award? Stink’s loyal fans will be holding their breath for his latest outrageous solo adventure.

4 out of 5 stars Teacher's Grade: B.......2007-09-18

My sons (8 and 11) both enjoyed this book quite a bit, so I read it myself. At first, I was put off by the awkwardly edited sentences, but as the book went on I realized that the story was pretty good, the characters inviting, and the computer-drawn pictures lively.

Due to the choppiness of the sentences I won't read this aloud to my students in 2nd grade, but I will certainly add it to my class library and recommend it to some less-advanced readers who are eager to tackle a chapter book.

5 out of 5 stars Stink is as happy as a pig in slop........2007-06-05

Stink is as happy as a pig in slop. He and his friends, Webster and Sophie, are on a class field trip at the science museum --- and the exhibit is called "Gross-Me-Out: The Wonderful World of Smelly Stuff." Stink starts with the giant nose, where he gets to gawk at enormous nose hairs and learn how boogers are made. He loves it!

But when Stink's teacher, Mrs. D., dares him to experience the "Everybody Stinks" exhibit, he has to summon up his courage. After all, no one else will even go near it. One whiff of the B.O. scent almost does him in, but he recovers long enough to sniff more smelly odors, including dirt, rotten eggs, skunk scent and perfume. It appears that Stink has a real talent for smelling. He can smell better than anyone else in his class. In addition, he learns tons of smelly facts.

At lunch, the kids read flyers about a stinky sneaker contest the museum is putting on. Naturally, Stink must enter. Others are interested as well, so he'll have plenty of competition.

At home, Stink demonstrates The Nose and even impresses his big sister, Judy Moody. Stink is confident that his Nose will make him famous someday. When he researches the science of smelling, he finds information about the corpse flower, the world's stinkiest blossom, rumored to smell worse than outhouses, dead elephants and rotten fish.

Stink is inspired to create some terribly stinky perfume and sets up a Franken-stink lab. He and Sophie work up a recipe (including toilet water, dead-flower water, pickle juice and more), but he's distracted when Sophie tells him she's planning to compete in the stinky sneaker contest. Stink is determined to win.

He's positive that his reeking old sneakers have a great chance to win the competition. But his plan is foiled when Judy deodorizes them with sweetly fragrant powder. What is he going to do? He can't pour anything (like his stinky perfume) in them since the rules say the shoes must stink from being worn. Can his entry be saved?

In a startling turn of events, Stink saves the day when misfortune strikes the contest. He also gets to meet a professional smeller who has actually sniffed a corpse flower. It all makes for a happy (or at least smelly) ending.

This is another enjoyable book in the Stink series, sure to appeal to young readers (especially to boys who are enthralled with the grosser aspects of life). As always, author Megan McDonald manages to tickle readers' funny bones, slip in a little subtle education and tell a good story.

Book Description

Anyone who has ever shopped for a pair of shoes--especially anyone who does so with a passion--knows that shoes are much more than functional objects. From the sneaker to the stiletto, shoes have become potent signifiers of gender, class, personality, taste, and even politics. This lavishly illustrated work recounts the history of shoes with entertaining essays that cover everything from the eroticism of ancient shoe lacing, medieval fears about long-toed shoes, and the role of shoes in religious ritual to the infamous Chopine with a 23-inch heel and the modern cult of shoe designers. With 170 color photos and 30 black and white illustrations, the essays will entertain and inform casual shoe shoppers and fashionistas alike.

My daughter got this book to use as a resource for a school report, and it does have some interesting history and great sections, like the Chinese shoes. But where are Birkenstocks and Earth shoes?? These also have changed shoe history, so why were they, and other "bohemian" shoes not included? Just because they are ugly to certain people, some of us are more concerned with comfort after years of wearing fashion (feet and posture killing) shoes, and now wear these, or similar "clunky" shoes. A real history would include everything.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Fairly Comprehensive Look at Sneakers.......2007-08-12

A great look at most of the shoes in each of the major companies respective ranges. While the descriptions and info on the shoes are pretty scant, the pictures more than make up for that. The best part of running through this book is getting hit with the nostalgia that comes with seeing so many products from the not-so-distant past. A nice modern coffee table (or ottoman, I suppose) book. Air Max 1s are the best shoes ever.

4 out of 5 stars A thorough and well presented history........2007-07-04

This book is great to look at even if you're not into sneakers. Beautifully presented design and layout, and great history details. A good oversight of all the significant brands and their best creations.

5 out of 5 stars asset to hiphip culture.......2006-02-17

this book is awesome is very informative, and if you know anything about the hip hop era then this book should be added to a persons collections.

5 out of 5 stars Clean, refreshing visual piece... it is obvious the authors did their sneaker research.......2005-08-26

I own several sneaker books including SOLE PROVIDER and Bobbito Garcia's WHERE'D YOU GET THOSE (both of which I recommend) and I found this book to be a refreshing alternative. Written by the guys behind CROOKED TONGUES (which is a fantastic site by the way), this book is meant for the sneaker collector who appreciates the aesthetic qualities of a shoe, rather than for someone who only buys into the hype and player endorsement. For practically every sneaker that is showcased, at least one clear photo, brief history, and random fact dedicated to each shoe. I also appreciated the effort by the authors to distinguish original editions from reissues. In addition, the sneaker "dictionary" and collecting/cleaning tips sections are great as well.

One word of caution is that I would not recommend the book for those who are only into Air Jordans, or Dunks, or swear by only one sneaker brand. The book contains information for a variety of different models and brands, some which are more obscure. For example, I found myself skipping over some Vans, Reebok, and Diadora models. The authors also have more of preference for vintage running shoes as well. But if you have an open mind and an eclectic taste in sneakers, I recommend owning this book.

The mysteries are cool. ( This is why I gave it 2 stars.) There are ten of them in the book. When you are done reading the mysteries they ask you how Encyclopedia Brown figured it out. You can never figure them out. They don't give you enough info. This makes it not very fun! Don't try the other books. They all have the same problem. Just don't waste your money. ( I gave the one star for trying.)

They're tough and fun to read. I like black jack's treasure. It's about black jack's treasure and a tree with a mark on it. It's also about this kid named Wilford Wiggins. He tries to fool kids too.

If you like mystery books you will like Nasty Stinky Sneakers by Eve Bunting. This is an awesome book. Colin has spent weeks making his shoes smell really bad for a contest. If he wins he will get three pairs of slam Dunker shoes. One for his little sister Amy, one for him self, and one for his best friend Webster. But now after weeks of working toward stinky sneakers, they are mising. Will he find them. I think this book is really good because it is funny, and my socks have smelt really bad.

i feel this is not a book for a third grader because amy in the book refers to her brother as a word that i cannot mention on here which should read dirt bag instead of the word they use. my daughter is in third grade and read it and asked why there are bad words in the book. i plan on having it pulled from our school

4 out of 5 stars Very fun read for newly independent readers.......1999-01-29

My 7 yr old really enjoyed this book. Light mystery with nothing scary but lots of fun is right where he's at. I appreciate that this book is also well written. I feel it's important for kids to read books with good sentence structure and interesting vocabulary, and this book has it. (There are some "series" and other books out there with fun titles and stories, but poor writing.)

2 out of 5 stars Not so good.......1998-07-15

This book said that Jack had dirty shoes. Children who read it WILL follow them and get scolded by their parents to proof that they can follow the story. So please don't ever write like this okay!!!!!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Outdated.......2007-07-16

This book is outdated, so not very helpful. Moreover, the suggestions are pretty obvious - I was hoping for a book that gave more specific ideas on what to buy and where (in other words, as an apartment-dwelling mom, what products make sense given the space constraints and where can these be bought today in 2007), where to go (for example, child-friendly gyms), etc. Although there were some suggestions, the suggestions were very outdated.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource with Very Witty Writing Style.......1999-07-15

This is a great book for parents of toddlers. I found the writing funny, the locations mentioned of interest and great tidbits to make your shopping, eating or recreational experience better.

Fun Book!!

1 out of 5 stars Adding my two disappointed cents.......1999-07-01

Sure, raising kids in New York IS easy when you have the bucks these authors must have to shop at the stores they mention. This extremely yuppy guide smacks of elitism and left me feeling like an embittered "have-not" Additionally, there's not nearly enough information about the borroughs, not all of us are fortunate enough to live on the upper east side...

1 out of 5 stars It's not about New York City. It's about Manhattan........1999-04-02

The title of this book is misleading. Thinking of Manhattan as "New York City" is a typically yuppie-provincial view--but in line with the voice of the authors. In addition, this book adds nothing you can't find in more reliable and complete sources such as Fodor's guides or the very many NYC web sites and news channels.

They fail to mention many of the exciting and educational attractions outside of Manhattan (to note are the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, Prospect Park, and the zillions of Staten Island events). They often leave out vital bits of information such as directions or phone numbers (perhaps they take taxis everywhere?) They mentioned one book store that I know has been closed for some time.

It was particularly disturbing that the majority of the book is spent on shopping and eating, and less on the variety indivudual nuances of libraries, museums, and music centers.

On a personal note, I found the authors style to be grating. To me, some of their phrasing, "Food and Whine" as the title for the restaurant chapter and "Here comes the Bribe" for toy stores, are tell-tale as to how they view and interact with their children. It's not a pretty picture.

This is not a book I would recommend to anyone, especially to Native New Yorkers.

5 out of 5 stars Best Present Ever for Your Pregnant Friends!!!.......1998-11-17

I don't know jack about babies and quite frankly dont wanna know right now, but if I ever did, then I would grab this book off the shelf in a hurry. Arthur, Misshula, & Pollock are the definitive authority on rearing the little monsters in the Big Apple. About the only thing they don't touch on is how to prevent your kids from becoming one of those dreaded Liberal NY Democrats. Beat those grandmothers to the punch, buy a copy for your friends who got pregnant to give themselves something to do during the current bear market.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Club Written Guidebook.......2005-07-25

Soggy Sneakers has been in print since the early 1980's - and it has stood the test of time better than I!

I was in High School in Eugene while the project was being finished - starting as a project by mentors Gene Ice and Bob Porter it metamorphed into a club based model for a great guidebook. What makes this book unusual is that there are almost as many authors as rivers - insuring that the author is writing not about a river he or she has run once, but usually several times, at several different times of year and water levels.

As such the descriptions are written about favorite rivers and although this does lead to a bit of discrepancy in comparing different rivers that is more than made up by depth of knowledge and enthusiastic writing.

The completion of the book by the Willamette Kayak and Canoe Club, many of whose members are academics at Oregon State University, only adds to the professionalism and usefulness of the book.

And I think they've even got one description written by yours truly left...

4 out of 5 stars Check which boat the writer was using.......2001-11-08

My open tandem canoe group used Soggy Sneakers on an exporatory (for us)week long trip in Southern Oregon. We found that the ratings listed in the book varied considerably depending on wether the writer was a kayaker, rafter or open canoeist. When a rafter called it a Class II it was a very different thing from when an open canoe rated it Class II. We got skunked several times before we started looking at the boats the raters were using. An open canoes Class III is a rafter's Class I and a Kayakers Class II. Once we figured that out we found the book very useful.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Oregon boating book.......2000-04-09

Soggy Sneakers along with Paddling Oregon (by Robb Keller) are the two definative books about boating in Oregon.

Soggy Sneakers -published by Seattle Mountaineers-is in its third edition and features over 200 runs compiled by members of the Willamette Kayak and Canoe Club who have run all of Oregon's rivers.

Included are Class 1 to Class 6 runs, with maps and descriptions of flow, gradient, length and character of each run. The book is an easy read and includes information on where to obtain shuttles and the best seasons to run.

The one criticism I have is the book fails to specify which type of craft (kayaks, canoes, rafts) are suited for each run.

Amazon.com Reviews

The creator of Polkabats and Octopus Slacks puts his playful pen to paper again in Dutch Sneakers and Fleakeepers. Calef Brown's story-poems are nonsensical and exuberant, and his muted, sophisticated Cubist paintings join the party with equal zeal. Did you know that fleas "learn to speak German / more quickly than bees"? Or that "bad teeth" aren't really bad, they just need "a cleaning and something to chew"? No, resist the impulse to look for lessons: Brown--a hip, modern Edward Lear--is here to have fun. Children will adore meeting the feared "Tattlesnake" (with unusual stripes and big ears), an electric-guitar-playing grandmother, a runaway waffle, a mysterious fish ("Green like asparagus. / Flat like a dish"), Sir Dance-a-lot, and the rest of Brown's crazy--yes, crazy--cast of characters. (All ages) --Karin Snelson

Book Description

In the tradition of Edward Lear, Calef Brown has fashioned fourteen nonsense poems so wacky that both young and old will be unable to suppress their laughter. Invented words and sounds and their visual counterparts create both an audible and a visual feast. This is the kind of silliness children (and many adults) relish.

5 out of 5 stars Artsy Amusement.......2006-09-02

Calef Brown uses funky-folksy illustrations and cheeky verse to describe fourteen imaginative vignettes. The younger set will enjoy spreads featuring topical buzzwords and images near and dear to them in Seven Bad Teeth, Runaway Waffle, Mysterious Fish and Olf (the impoverished pirate). Older children appreciate the unexpected scenarios of grandma jamming for adoring fans, beetles powdering donuts on a sugar beach or commuters floating away with bubble gum balloons. Kids pick up on your own amusement in reading the clever tale of a Moon Reunion and the limerick spoof Jack in the Bucket. Children ages two to seven will smile and puzzle over this wonderfully odd book.

5 out of 5 stars A Big Hit with My 6 Year Old!.......2000-12-07

Amazon.com delivered this book to my son as a gift from a very wise and whimsical friend. He loved it instantly and it became THE requested bedtime book night after night after night. And, that was OK, because we (the grown-ups) love it too! The poems are wacky and sometimes demented and make sense in that dream-sense or nonsense way. You'll laugh and laugh as our family does -- and you'll each have a favorite (mine is "Mysterious Fish"). Promote a love of language and of silliness -- buy this book for a child you love.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful story poems for everyone.......2000-05-08

Calef Brown has written a collection of poems that are real winners. They are easy to read with modern wacky language and rhymes that kids will just love. The accompanying illustrations are rich in color and detail and compliment each poem. Everyone in the family will enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Another gem from Calef Brown.......2000-03-29

A wonderful follow-up to one of the most clever and fun children's books of last year. Mr. Brown's illustrations -- vivid, color-saturated, witty, and just sinister enough to keep adults and kids interested -- are heightened by DUTCH SNEAKERS' delightfully loopy verse.

5 out of 5 stars Love it Love it Love it!.......2000-03-22

In an age of Disney-overload, the inventive, clever verses are a joy to read.A book for anyone who is tired of reading the same thing over and over, it stands out as a delightful and vibrant book.

With a look that's very much in keeping with sneaker culture and history and anecdotes which could make even the least interested develop a sneaker fetish, this is a must have book for anyone with a love of sneakers, shoes or fashion in general.

5 out of 5 stars great book pretty pictures.......2006-01-06

this is a great book for anyone who's into sneakers. you don't have to be a "head" to enjoy the pretty pictures and the interviews. it's great that the author talked about where to hunt for sneakers in various cities around the world. now if only the book was bigger in size so the details of the sneakers can be appreciated more....

5 out of 5 stars Giving geeks a good name........2005-10-27

Encyclopedia Brown was my childhood hero. I liked him so much I named my cat Sally Kimball. Not one to stand out in a crowd, Cyc (on the covers of the old scholastic paperbooks) looked like a carbon copy of my 2nd grade self. Of course, I was sitting inside reading about his adventures during recess, not solving crimes, with wits perhaps not quite so sharp. And my suburb did not have quite as many opportunities for me to distinguish myself with crime-solving ability. Still, Cyc taught me lessons that I saw myself one day applying, once I escaped Red China.
This was before I got into snorting Pixie Stix.

5 out of 5 stars Are You a good detective?.......2005-10-13

This story is about a boy who starts a detective business and his name is Leroy Brown, but all his friends call him Encyclopedia. His father is the cheif of police and no one in the city of Idaville(where he lives)had gotten away with any crime in over one year! Whenever his father gets a hard case, he tells it to Leroy and it's solved very fast, but it's their little secret. The answers to all the cases are in the back of the book, but sometimes it's fun to solve them yourself. Some cases are easier than others and some are harder than others but they all make this a good book!
