If a bear wanted to find out his/her family history, this would be the encyclopedia to buy. Being a teddy bear is still very in vogue. This is a fascinating way to find out why we love teddy bears and why they appeal to collectors all over the world.
You can read about all the best-loved bears, from the original "teddy" to "Winnie-the-Pooh. The latest collectibles such as Beanie Bear and the Millennium Bears are also included. Pauline Cockril is the internationally recognized expert on the history of the teddy bear. She is also a regular contributor to Teddy Bear Times.
If you see a teddy bear and instantly want to buy it...this book IS for you. Also look for The Ultimate Teddy Bear Book which is considered to be the bible of arctophily (bear collecting) and is used by collectors, dealers and toy shops around the world.
The first bear listed was made in 1902 and was an experimental Steiff bear. The bears are listed all the way up to the year 2000. If you think you have seen it all...wait until you see the Pink Dino, a Swiss bear with characteristic elongated designs that I think looks more like a monkey. I much prefer the 1991 Pam Howells bear that has a lace collar, shaggy golden mohair plush "fur" and a cute hat trimmed with fabric roses. The Australian Teddy bear on pg. 137 looks somewhat like a koala bear for some reason. :)
I know a place where a lady has bears sitting everywhere in her Bed & Breakfast. You just want to take one of the bears home with you. In each room, she also has a "resident" bear that sits on the fluffy down-comforter covered bed. The whole place is like one big teddy bear picnic. I bet she knows about this book!
It is just unbearable not to own more bears. I must go shopping since I gave away most of my teddies when they had a teddy bear drive for kids. It was sad to say goodbye to some of them, but I know they are now happily living with a child who loves them. I do think it is time to start collecting again!
All Bears DON'T Look Alike!!.......1999-08-18
This is a great "beginner" book to learn about the points that distinguish one bear from another. Somehow they all seem to look alike at first!!
This book teaches you to pay attention to whether the nose is stitched up and down or from side to side. Are the feet big or are they little stumps? Are the eyes glass or plastic? Are the ears close together or far apart? Are the arms long and pointed or short and stumpy? These all are clues as to the date and manufacturer of the bear!!
Includes a section on repairing an antique bear (less is better!) as well as a section on newer bears!
A great learning tool! Written so it is easily understood........you don't have to already BE an EXPERT to BECOME one with the help of this well written book!!

The book is filled with many different styles, design and personalities of teddy bear, a lot of ideas will come out after reading it(as I like to make teddy bear by myself). Although there is no step in making the teddy bears, you will be impressed by the arts of teddy bear! Best book for teddy bear making instructions.......2007-01-05
This is the best technical book that I've found for teddy bear making instructions. All the photographs throughout the book are in color with several to a page. Every single step is clearly photographed along with a sidebar that gives the equipment that is used for that step.
Tools and equipment are photographed together on a page to show the real life size differences. Stitches are diagrammed and photographed as they are being done. Materials are photographed side by side so that the reader can see the differences. Stuffing is discussed with photos and the pros and cons of each type such as polyester, plastic pellets, kapok, steel shot, and wood wool.
Assembling and jointing techniques are taught and all varieties are photographed step by step. Teddy features such as eyes and nose placement are taught and photos of the different varieties are shown as well as tips for successful teddy bear faces.
There is a section on making miniature bears and the differences between miniature bears and larger bears that need to be taken into account. Teddy bear clothes, hats and accessories are shown with patterns to use.
At the end of the book is a 27 page inspirational gallery of work from some of the leading teddy bear artists today. There are also three bear patterns and a miniature bear pattern that can be copied on a machine and printed out to use.
This book is a delight to use. The photos are great and the bears are charming. I highly recommend it!

I have a large web site celebrating carved dolls with several web pages about Schoenhut dolls. I use this book as my main reference for Schoenhut dolls.
I love this book. Carol's method of presenting the dolls by Schoenhut model numbers has changed the way modern doll collectors refer to these dolls. Now a collector might state, "I have a 316 in mint condition". Thanks to Carol, others will be able to picture her doll clearly in our mind.
Carol's stories about the Schoenhut family members and each of their very active involvement with the toy company puts a very personal slant on the history of this family oriented company. It should be obvious from this book that the Schoenhut family took great pride in producing the best quality, durable dolls and toys because they loved children and enjoyed the great fun of watching children at play.
If you collect Schoenhut dolls, then you really NEED this book -- I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

This is an excellent overview of the history of the Steiff Co. Tons of pictures showing a vast history of stuffed animals and dolls. There is one doll that looks exactly like Homer Simpson. But also lots of information on how this privately owned company started, the methods and inventions for devising their creatures, pictures of the factory, the museum, dioramas, all amazing... In keeping with the Steiff profile the book also sports a heafty pricetag. Ahcht

A great book about action figures in general.......2004-06-28
This is a very nice reference book. Rather than giving a lot of detail about one type of action figure line, it provides a little history/information on lots of action figure lines. This book literally covers 1001 well know and more obscure action figure lines... it was very fun to read/reminisce. This is a hardcover book with 100s of color photos on full glossy paper. It contains at least one picture (and usually more) of virtually every action figure line. Most of the photos are small, but still worthwhile. I was pleasantly surprised to see so much information and so many pictures in such a small book (it is about 6" by 7", 350 pages, and a little over 1" thick). I collect mostly Star Wars and Mego figures, but often come across other figures when exploring. This was the perfect reference book for such a situation. This book also provides a general value for each figure line (the estimates seemed to be at least as good as other price guides). I bought my copy used for around $5 plus shipping (it arived in PERFECT condition). But, I'd say it is easily worth twice that... maybe even more.

The title "Encyclopedia" suggests a book full of information, but the text of this book is sparse, disjointed, and occasionally downright weird. (It starts with the voyage of the Mayflower. Really. I could not possibly make that up.)
The color photos of the dolls in the most recent edition are lovely, but a surprising number of the book's photos are of old advertising materials, newspaper clippings, promotional displays and even price lists, plus photos of the company's founding family. Far from an encyclopedia about the popular Ginny doll, the book reads as if someone published the company's scrapbook.

My review applies to the revised edition I just acquired, 2004 copyright. It features over 350 full-color photos and is very, very informative. I especially liked the fact that all Ginnys shown in this book are wearing their authentic costumes and accessories! This book has very elaborate descriptions and include pictures of many of the original boxes that the Ginnys came in. What more can I say? It's well worth the investment! Love this book!
