Customer Reviews:
A terrific book.......2004-02-06
I read this book when I was nine or ten. Now I'm reading the Little House novels. But I still remember how much I loved the chapter books, especially this one. It tells about Laura Ingalls and her adventures with her dog, Jack. I got really sad when the family lost Jack while crossing a river on their way to Kansas, and they thought he had died. But I loved when that night, an animal came to where the Ingalls were. It had bright eyes, and they thought it was a wolf! It turned out that the "wolf" was Jack! He hadn't died after all! The book told of lots of other adventures Laura had with Jack. I recommend this book to girls seven to ten. If you read this book, I know you'll enjoy it.
Adventures Of Laura & Jack.......2001-02-03
This book is very, very interesting. My seven year old daughter loved this book. The book is about the dfferent homesteads that Laura and her family had lived and the adventures of not only Laura's, but Jack, her bulldog, as well. This book is bound to keep any child on the edge of their sits with the dangerous experiences that Laura and Jack and her family face. The reader of this book with experience many different emotions from being happy to tears of sadness. I recommend this book to all children.

Book Description
At first, Travis couldn't stand the sight of Old Yeller
The stray dog was ugly, and a thieving rascal, too. But he sure was clever, and a smart dog could be a big help on the wild Texas frontier, especially with Papa away on a long cattle drive up to Abilene.
Strong and courageous, Old Yeller proved that he could protect Travis's family from any sort of danger. But can Travis do the same for Old Yeller?
Customer Reviews:
Who hasen't read this great book?.......2007-09-15
I actually got a few chuckles out of this book as well as quite a few tears at the end (who DOESN'T know what happens in the end?) of coarse. From what I can remember about this book, is that you can actually UNDERSTAND the speaking and of their way of life [to a certain extent(thanks Mr. Rayburn)] which makes reading it a whole lot easier. A must-read. For all ages (I think).
Big yellow dog.......2007-03-30
Old yeller is a book in the 1800's.In the book there is a 14 year old boy named Travis. His dad is leaving to go fight in the Civil War and hes leaving Travis in charge.Taking care of his little brother Arliss was like another chore that Travis had to do.When Travis was younger he had a dog named Bell. Bell was bit in the nose by a Rattle snake and he ended up dying. After that Travis swore that he would never get another dog to take Bell's place. But then one day when Travis was out doing his chores he saw a big object in the corn field. He went to see what it was and when he got there it was a big yellow dog and thats how he found Old Yeller.
a big yeller dog.......2007-03-30
old yeller is about a 14 year old boy named Travis. His dad left to fight in the Civil war and he put Travis in charge. Taking care of his little brother Arliss wasnt the easiest job but he still had to do it. Travis had swore that he would never get a dog to replace his dog Bell but one day when Travis was working in the field he saw a big yeller dog and thats how he came up with Old Yeller.
Old Yeller.......2007-03-16
Old Yeller is the beautiful, touching story of a boy and his big "yeller" dog.
When Travis's father goes on a cattle drive, Travis takes over the farm. He takes on a big task and is furious to find a big, one-eared, yellow dog eats thier meat, plays in their drinking water, and runs away when his family is in dire need of help. But Old Yeller proves himself when he saves Travis's litttle brother, Arliss, from a mad mother bear.
I loved reading Old Yeller because the story became real. I love dogs and it was amazing how detailed the story was. It was touching to read about how close Travis and Old Yeller were brought together.
Old Yeller is a classic novel everyone can read. Fred Gipson tells about the love and loyalty the characters possess for one another. I highly recommend this touching story that filled me with emotion and made my day forever.
This Book is GREAT Buy it NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-12-15
The book Old Yeller is about a boy named Travis and he was left in charge of the farm and duties while Pa went on a cattle drive to Kansas. One random day a stray dog showed up at Travis's and wrecked a fence. When Travis found out about what the dog did he wanted to shoot the dog, but Little-Arliss wouldnt let him. At the time Travis didnt want a dog he wanted a horse. Soon to find out he fell in love with the stray and named it Old Yeller. Old Yeller helped out a lot around the farm. He helped watch out for raccoons in the corn fields, he also saved Travis from wild hogs. One day a man came to the cabin to claim Old Yeller. When the man found out where Pa was and how Old Yeller really helped the family he let them keep the dog. Later on in the story Old Yeller gets sick. To find out how he got sick, what has to happen to the dog in the end, if Pa comes home, and to read all the adventures of Old Yeller, Travis, Little-Arliss and the family...Read Old Yeller. I highly recomend it!!!!!!

Book Description
In the spring of 1865 the Civil War has finally ended. Men are coming home. Families are being reunited -- except for Tyler's. His father is going with a band of men to Mexico, where they will regroup, rearm, and continue the fight against the Yankees. Tyler is stunned. For four years he's dreamed of seeing his father again, and he can't let go of that dream. There's only one thing Tyler can do -- go get his father and bring him home.
Tyler starts his trek from Missouri to the Rio Grande alone, but he quickly gains a companion -- a strange dog made mean by cruelty but tamed by hunger and Tyler's desperately lonely need for him. Tyler names him Bigger.
The journey is long and hard but, with Bigger by his side, possible. Tyler might make it all the way to the Rio Grande. He might even find his father. But most importantly, Bigger helps Tyler realize that some dreams might not be worth holding on to.

Not a dog of a book.......2006-11-07
The Southern cause was lost and many never came home.
We have a brave boy here who goes looking for his father
and winds up both finding a friend in a dog
and growing up at one time.
Unlike others he came home
and used his new understanding to make life
better after the war had gone away.
How would you feel in this situation?.......2006-01-10
Bigger, a book written by Patricia Calvery in which I rated with four stars.
This book is about a boy named Tyler who sets out to look for his father who is in the Civil War. He must travel to Mexico all by himself to find his father. During his journey he encounters many people, animals, and adventures. What makes it so interesting is the great detail each event is written in. It is almost as if you are there when it happens. Tyler finaly finds his father but very unfortunately his father is not coming home with him. Even though he isn't coming home Tyler showed Great determination to even go all the way to look for his father and actually find him. I now have great respect for Tyler and what he did.
During his journey Tyler makes a great companion. It just so happens to a bed a dog. The first time Tyler laid his eyes on the dog he never thought there would be any way that they would become friends. Somehow Bigger tracked Tyler down and they became best friends. On their first night together Bigger (the dog) woudln't even come on the same side of the fire as Tyler. That is just how timid he was. Tyler and Bigger being together really made me give this book four stars. They show a prime example of a great and loving relationship between boy and dog!
I would recommend Call of The Wild is you enjoyed this book. In a way they are similiar. I am foutteen years old and I love football!!!

Bigger, a book written by Patricia Calvert in which I rated with four stars.
In this book a young boy named Tyler who sets out to look for his dad who is in the Civil War. It has beem a long while since his dad has been home so Tyler decides to go out looking for him. On his journey he encounters many people, animals, and spectacular events! The detail in which each event is explained in is what really makes me give this book four stars! Even though his dad doesn't end up coming back home with Tyler, this story shows great determination to at least find his father. I have great respect for Tyler after reading this story. Hard to believe a young kid would do something this risky just to find his father isn't it?
Now let's talk about the relationship between Tyler and Bigger. When Tyler first saw Bigger he was intimidated and never thought they would become such good companions. Their first night together bigger wouldn't even come to the same side of the fire as Tyler, thats just how timid he was. As the story progresses Tyler and Bigger grow closer and in the end Bigger is killed by his previous owner who used to beat Bigger. This book shows a great relationship between man and dog!!!
I would recommend Call of the wild if you enjoyed this story. In a way they are similiar.I am fourtteen years old and I love football!!!
Bigger is Better.......2005-03-02
If you're into adventures with a twist, then Bigger is the book for you! Bigger is written by Patricia Calvert, who has also written Ancient Inca, Betrayed, and Picking up the Pieces. Bigger is an older book published in 1994, so you'll find older dialogue that's different than today's. It was also nominated for a Rebecca Caudill award in 1997. Bigger is a story of a boy named Tyler who is leaving his home in a town named Sweet Creek to go to the Texas/Mexico border to bring his father back from the Civil war. Soon he meets a dog who he names "Bigger" and they set off together. On their way to the border they meet a black boy named Isaac Perce who travels with them for a few days. After Isaac leaves they continue south and learn more of what has happened during the war. At some points Tyler thinks they won't make it, but his determination and Bigger's loyalty keeps them going.
A great aspect of this book is how incredibly descriptive it is. You can easily imagine many things. One descriptive thing in the book is when Tyler compares the characteristics of the stranger to his father's, and used phrases like "his eyes were gray with sorrow, not black like a gypsy's." Another part that was descriptive was when he described the landscape of a Texas desert and used words like "The land was harsh and dry, and extremely hot." This book is so descriptive, it's almost like you're really there!
Another good part of the book is Bigger, the dog. Everyone calls him a devil except Tyler, who is the only one Bigger, is nice to. When Tyler first met Bigger, he was chained to a post, and his uncle was going to shoot him. Thankfully, Tyler's Cousin Clayton "secretly" loosened Bigger's collar so he could slip out and go with Tyler. An interesting feature of Bigger is his "talking" eyes, which "answer" Tyler when he talks. Bigger is brave and very loyal to Tyler.
Bigger is an extremely descriptive book with interesting characters that's good for most ages. It was one of the best books I ever read, and if you read it, I'm almost positive you'll like it to. It's an excellent story of a boy who meets his best friend as he searches for his missing father.
Could you go 800 miles for your dad?.......2004-02-14
Could you go 800 miles for your dad?
Bigger
By Patricia Calvert
Published in 1994
When his father, Black Jack Bohannan disappears near the Mexican border at the end of the Civil War,twelve-year-old Tyler decides to go after him over a 800 mile journey on the Rio Grande. Then he will bring him home, acquiring in his journey a strange abused `Devil Dog' which he comes to name Bigger and he also meets an slave who's name is Isaac who escaped, but he has many scars and Tyler befriended him.
An interesting part in Bigger is when Tyler gives Isaac a pair of shoes and Isaac was surprised and said,'My stars a pair of shoes! Might be a little too big for these big feet.' Then he tries them on and says,'Nossir these are big enough for me.' Then Isaac gives him a fishing pole and some line.
This is a book for boysand/or girls who like adventure.
I give this book a 9 and 1 half out of 10 because I love this book. (:D>

Book Description
Like water on parched ground, Mae Dean's happiness dries up when her father announces the family is headed west for a new life on the Texas Panhandle. Her brothers are excited about the move, but Mae Dean doesn't want to leave home and make a new one literally out of the ground. In a poignant confrontation, she lashes out at her father, and he comforts her with gentle words of reassurance. Colorful linoleum-cut block prints illustrate the story.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring, educational, & captivating for all ages!.......2000-09-29
It was a rare moment with my daughter, nestled under the covers. "Praire Dog Pioneers" was not a mere story--it was an adventure that soothed us after a full day. It was so relaxing and interesting. My daughter, a five year old, was truly delighted with the characters and tale. We went back through time to join a family relocating. My daughter immediately identified with the youngest character, and was so caught up with her character and feelings, that she rooted for her all along. In quite a natural way, this book emphasizes the importance of integrity, acceptance, love, and family values. It also deals with some realities we all face. It is educational, colorful, historical, and positively inspiring. The text and illustrations are both truly a work of Art. The story encouraged us to sing a folk song together afterwards, which was the perfect bond for parent and child right before bedtime. This is a must for every family!

Great Read!.......2005-02-27
My dad gave this to me for Christmas because I have been interested in the history of mushing since I started about 8 years ago. I am extremely happy to see Togo in here! I really don't like how Balto has gotten all of the glory, I mean, he only did the last 40 miles!
This is a great read for any dog nut or anyone interested in the gold rush.
Gold Rush Dogs.......2004-04-21
It's time people recognize the "true heroes" of the lifesaving Diphtheria Run to Nome which began on January 27, 1925 in Nenana, Alaska. The true heroes were not Balto and Gunnar Kaasen. The true heroes were members of twenty dog teams. Wild Bill Shannon left Nenana with 300,000 units of serum to be relayed a distance of 674 miles by twenty dog teams, before finally reaching Nome. On January 28, 1925, Leonhard Seppala and his dog team led by Togo, left Nome to collect the serum 254 miles away at Nulato for the final run into Nome.
Togo was a small gray dog eager to be a sled dog. It was by chance that Leonhard Seppala discovered the leadership Togo displayed when first harnessed in the wheel position. Because of Togo's determination, he was moved in stages to the front of the line, soon becoming a once in a lifetime leader. Seppala entered and won every major race in Alaska, many of them several times, with Togo in lead position.
Late in the serum run, Seppala was unaware that Nome had made the decision to send three additional dog teams to relieve Seppala. The teams were to space themselves every 20 miles outside of Nome. Rohn, Olson, and Kaasen...whose team was led by Balto...drove the three additional teams. Kaasen hit a blizzard at Solomon and was instructed not to go forward. Kaason alleged there had been little wind that night in Solomon, visibility was good, and the Safety Roadhouse displayed the proper signal light acknowledging the waiting dog team. Kaasen continued on, bypassing Safety where the serum was to be turned over to Rohn, who in turn was to take the serum into Nome.
Kaasen reached Nome on February 2, 1925 with the serum. Kaasen had been accused of bypassing Safety in order to claim the honor of bringing the serum into Nome. The men of the "Great Race of Mercy" were awarded $25.00 each from the Territory of Alaska along with citations of bravery and inscribed medals. Kaasen received an additional $1,000.00 along with an offer to star with Balto in a Hollywood film. Kaasen traveled Outside to the lower 48 states giving lectures about the serum run. Balto not only received recognition as the "wonder dog" but was recognized for Togo's racing achievements as well. The city of New York erected a bronze statue of Balto in Central Park. The other nineteen dog teams and their vital part in the serum run were soon forgotten.
Kaasen and Balto had carried the serum 106 miles. Seppala and Togo covered 260 miles in 40-degree below temperature through a raging storm, a distance longer than any team on the trail. Togo received permanent injuries during the serum run and would never race again.
After the serum run, Seppala continued touring on the Outside. He later moved to Seattle where he died in 1967 at age 90...never forgiving the events that followed the serum run. Togo's remains are displayed at the Iditarod Headquarters in Wasilla, Alaska. The Leonhard Seppala Humanitarian Award is presented each year to the Alaska Iditarod musher displaying the highest care and concern for his or her team. Balto's bronze statue still stands in Central Park. Balto's remains are displayed at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
Togo and Leonhard Seppala were the heroes of the serum run...along with the other eighteen dog teams that were soon forgotten amongst all the negative controversy.
Please note: It is not my intent to take away the achievements of Balto; nor was it Balto's intent to dishonor the nineteen great dog teams. The one that finishes the race first is not always the winner. In this case it was the nineteen teams that brought Balto to the finish in Nome along with his fame and glory.
Dog lovers and history buffs alike will relish this.......2001-08-09
Dog lovers and history buffs alike will relish Gold Rush Dogs, a celebration of notable dogs of the Gold Rush era, from John Muir's Stikeen to Baldy of Nome. Black and white photos from Gold Rush days depict dog and man alike in this excellent blend of history and animal insights.
The great dogs of Alaska.......2001-07-18
Gold Rush Dogs is a great book that shows just how loyal dogs can be. Not only that she tells about the history and shows the important role that dogs played in developing Alaska. Besides this, she tells nine amazing stories of dogs that are famous in the region of the state that they stayed at.
Sure, you probably know about Balto in the Dipheria run, but you may not know about Togo, who was equally vital in the relay. Then there is Patsy Ann, the friendly stray who's ability to always know when and where the ships were coming in earned her the titile of "Official Greeter of Juneau.
Whether your a dog lover, or just love stories about Alaska, this book is full of amazing stories that capture the grandure of Alaska and the heart of dogs.

WINSOME CHARACTERS ANY KID WILL LOVE!.......2003-04-25
My sons all enjoyed Nathan and his friends and adventures. The youngest boy especially got interested in reading because of Nathan and his dog and his travels west alone looking for his parents. I would recommend these books to any family. Great for girls too!
Great for that in-between boy age.......2001-10-26
Plenty of action and suspense, definitely written for boys, although girls will especially like the constant tension between Nathan and his friend, "not your girlfriend" Leah. This two-volume series has six stories of Nathan in the wild west of the mid 1800's. As a Christian mom, I love that Nathan is constantly firing off prayers during the many sticky situations he finds himself in. I read this to my two boys (5 and 13) right after the Lloyd Alexander "Taran" series, and both boys really enjoyed both series. In the ever-increasing struggle of finding exciting yet "safe" books to read with your kids, I was thrilled to find this series.

Dog Days of the West.......2001-06-04
Wow!Dog days of the West was a great book.I couldn't put it down. It was so exiting, the suspense of finding out who actualy owned The Oakdale Chronicle was fascinating.
If you like Wishbone, you will love this story!.......1999-06-02
I think this Wishbone book is better than others of its kind because the story plot is better written and the book is longer. It introduces more younger kids, now that Joe is going into 9th grade (same as myself). My favorite part in this book was when Wishbone found the deed with the winning hand! Another part I enjoyed was the story where Wishbone is Long Bill back into the Wild West Days. It has inspired me so much that I'm going to read books by O. Henry, because this Wishbone book was based on one of his books. I really enjoyed this book, and I'm in 8th grade!
A good book.......1998-09-06
This is a good book for kids who want to know the story of the book it is based on, Heart of the West. It also has another story worked into it, switching back and forth every two or three chapters. It is also funny, and has a small dictionary of unfamiliar words and phrases with their meanings. I highly recommened this book.

Not appropriate for children--too much violence!.......2007-09-10
I began reading this book with my daughters, ages 7 and 9, and soon realized it was a story of lawless men holding a family at knife point and planning to murder them once "dad" returns with proof of land ownership----all very frightening for children. My daughter couldn't sleep that night. I threw the book away---I wouldn't even donate it to anyone else given the violent premise.
We were so disappointed, given that Bill Wallace has other much more joyous dog stories that we have enjoyed!
danger in the mountains.......2007-02-27
Ever read a book that you couldn't put down? I read the book Red Dog which was an exciting adventure. The setting took place in a cabin in the middle of a forest, away from town. The main characters are, Sam, Mother, Lily, Adam, and Ruff. Adam has to escape his house and find help because, Mother, and Lily are in trouble, and people are going to murder his family, that's in the house. The genre of this book is realistic fiction, because of where it took place, and how everything related to the nature of the world.
The beginning of the book was slow, and not interesting as in the end of the book it was more interesting how he escaped and tried to find help and when the action kicked in. I recommend this book to people who are patient, and can wait till the action occurs; any age could read this book, mainly for kids and teens. This book was a page turner when the action was kicking in, most of the chapters was page turning, but I cant say all of the chapters were page turners. Mostly every chapter had a cliff hanger, after the chapter it would leave you hanging when something interesting, or action is going on, and you can't put the book down, where kids would mainly want to read this book because it's fun and still leaves you hanging. In the beginning of the book, it was boring with fights with Adam and hi family, and showing how their life really is, but once the action came it towards the end, it made you want to keep reading. The end is the best part of the book, and the most suspenseful... but you have to read it to find out...
Ruff Dog.......2006-04-24
This is one of my least favorite books. The book is called Red Dog. This book is about a boy who's name is Adam. His mom is marring a guy that he hates. Once they got married his stepfather made them move out to Wyoming. This is where he always grew up so he knew the place from front to back. Adam hated it because he was out in the middle of no where. He has never seen anyone but his family members for months. He has a dog that does not have a name. Adam has not named his little red hound yet because he does not know what he should name the dog. He wants to give the right name because the dog will have to live with him for the rest of his life. Adam hates his name he wishes that his mom would have let him pick his own name when he was old enough. When his sister and him went down to the creek to play because there mom was trying to clean the house. She didn't want them around because they always cause trouble. The dog was playing with his little sister and after while Adam gets tired of the dog playing so ruff with his little sister. Adam then begins to think the dog's likes to play Ruff with his sister so he calls the dog Ruff. The two of them always go down to the creek because they also hate there step dad and they just want to get away from in once in a while.
I thought that this book was an ok book. It was not the best book that I have read in my life time. The one thing about this book was that Adam was a lot like me. He likes to do dare devil things and he does not really care what he has to do. He just wants to get it done.
I think this book is for more outdoors type of people because the setting takes place in the mountains. They do a lot of things out side like fishing hunting. His dad does a lot of trapping so the people into hunting should like this book.
The best book ever!.......2006-04-01
This story is about a famly that just moved. Before they moved the father died. The characters are Red Pup, Adam, Sam, the mother, and a sister. Adam meets a dog in the woods and names him Red Pup. Adam and Red Pup are best buddies. Then the dog ran off to somewhere and hunters find him and try to kill him. He gets shot in the leg. So Adam goes to find him and all the rest is for you to read. the book is very exciting, adventurous and sad a little. If you like adventures this is the book for you!
