Very Usefull.......2007-10-06
The book is excellent and provides a usefull information for raise and American Pitbull Terrier
Easy read for those who want to know more about the breed........2007-01-11
This book was helpful when I first got my APT a few years back. Besides teaching you the basics of taking care of him/her, it also goes into how the breed has been abused and misinterpreted. American Pitbull Terriers can be the most loyal and friendliest of dogs, if taken care of properly. (I can attest to that, being a former owner).
Wonderful, informaitive, Truthful.......2003-11-20
This book gives a truthful picture of APBT's. It also has exclent information on caring for this breed through it's life. I purchased it for my mother, who was nervous about the breed, before I adopted my dog. After reading the book she was looking forward to having the adition to the family come and was sharing her new found info with friends and family who had negitive reactions when hearing I was getting an APBT. An exclent book to have on hand and share with those intrested in the breed, who own the breed, and who don't know the breed.
Don't judge this wonderful breed of dog!.......2003-03-23
Even though I knew that this dog wasn't as "mean and aggressive" as people made it seem, this book was extremely interesting and i learned many new facts. Besides being a great care-guide, it explains the breed's character and history.Everything that you would ever want to know about the American Pit Bull Terrier can be found in this book, accuratly portrayed. The book is clear on how to prevent accidental fights and that this great dog should only be owned by responsible people. Hopefully the APBT will one day gain the respect they deserve and people will know the truth about them.
A wonderful book for APBT owners and fans!.......2001-04-25
As an owner of a 90+ pound APBT, I have tried to read all the books and articles I could find on the subject of pit bulls. This is BY FAR the best book I have found. Many writers of such books are extremely one sided, either portaying the dogs a vicious killers or as baby dolls. Mr. Stahlkuppe very fairly shows the good points of these dogs, as well as the bad. This book should be required reading for all prospective pit bull owners.

Very informative but a little too generic.......2004-08-09
I found the book easy to read with loads of great photos of TT's. The first few chapters on the description, origin, living with a TT and Grooming a TT were great. The large section on TT's in the US was irrelevant to me since I am from Australia and I was dissappointed in the last few chapters because they were very generic and packed full with advertisments for a particular companies products.
Still I think it is a good read for anyone considering obtaining a TT for the first time.
Left wanting to hear more . . ........2002-02-20
The photography in the book is great. I also liked the history on the breed. I was, however, disappointed by the minimal information in the book about the breed's temperment, personality and the pluses and minuses of the breed. I was yearning for more information about this. The second half of the book is devoted to the typical puppy information that was very generic and has been written about in almost every dog book I've read. Anne, next time give us more!!
great photographics, generics.......2000-02-11
Its a very good book for new commers also for other breeds but not for breeders. Why are not included the opinions of other breeders? It hase also commercial announcements I don¨t like that.
Great photographs, as well as terrific descriptions........1999-07-25
I have read this book because I am looking for a Tibetan Terrier. I did lots of research, and read many books, but this one was the best. I found in all the other books that they were a little generic, and didn't give good advice, or was a little out dated. I found this book very simple to read, and I read it in one day. It gives terrific advice on the do's and don'ts of the Tibetan Terrier. The pictures are terrific, but I found the information even more fantastic.

Do NOT buy a dog from this woman, or support her book!.......2007-09-16
I bought a puppy from this woman in 2002, and she gave me a free signed copy of this book. My dog has mange and two luxating patellas. I wrote her to warn her of the genetic problems with her breeding stock, and to tell her that otherwise I adore my dog. What I got back from her were angry, ignorant replies where she accuses me of trying to get a free dog from her. I told her that a "free" dog from her would definatly not be "free". Please do not support this woman, and by all means, do NOT buy a dog from her! If you'd like to see the email transcript- see my puppy's blog at Myspace-- user name is weasagail . For what it is worth, her book has nice pictures of rat terriers, but thats about it (as other reviewers have described much better). At the time I received it, it was literally the ONLY rat terrier book out there, and therefore it was the best. But the day a second book became available, this one became worthless.
Poor English, Poor Info, Poor Dogs.......2004-04-21
While this was admittedly a first attempt at defining a diverse breed, the effort expended doesn't warrant the price required, NOR does it do the breed ANY justice.
The information is general at best, misleading or just plain wrong at worst - for better general info of canines check out The Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Skeete. The grammar and organization is non-existant and does more to confuse than clarify. The majority of the pictures do not represent the look of the breed and it will require a much more in depth investigation to dispell their misrepresentations - Anne Blair's Ratter Chatter would give potential Rat Terrier owners a much more accurate, specific overall view of the breed, even though it is aimed at people who are already owned by Rat Terriers.
Save your money!!! Flip through Linda Hibbard's book in the bookstore an example of what Rat Terriers shouldn't look like, and then buy ANY other dog book for general dog info. OR contact a local breeder, rescue, dog club - you'll get a much better idea of the strengths and weaknesses of this wonderful breed, PLUS you will be able to see what a Rat Terrier SHOULD look like.
Good Basic Rat Terrier Book.......2004-03-23
I have read this book as well as many, many others on different breeds of dogs. This book does a good job of giving the basic information and has some lovely photos. It is a good, inexpensive book for those looking to research the breed or as a precursor to buying a Rat Terrier pup.
There are few breed books written on the Rat Terrier and I have to say that I enjoy this one. I also have Ratter Chatter, which is a different type of book entirely. I have to recommend the Hibbard book as well as the Ratter Chatter (by Blair) book as they are both wonderful if you are into the breed.
As a general rule, most dog breed books contain puppy information which could apply to basically any breed of dog. I would not discount this book's credibility because it contains information on raising a pup that applies to all breeds. I also have to agree with one reviewer in the fact that some of the information was duplicated in different parts of the book. I discovered that as well, however, I choose to believe that the author felt it may have been prudent to revisit that information maybe worded slightly differently in more than one section.
I do recommend this book for all Rat Terrier enthusiasts. Don't limit yourself to reading just this one book though. There is limited information on this breed so read as many books as you can on the subject.
Authors, please disregard the ignorant reviews.......2004-01-14
Being an English major, the authors depicted the book and pure bred excellently. Their English was great and the pictures were excellent. Apparently this was the authors first attempt at a book and their only intention was to put a book out on this rare breed.
We did not need the ignorant Southerners remarks about a rescue shelter. This book gives facts and does not encourage anything about going to a breeder. You people should be ashamed of yourselves.
Too Generic.......2003-08-31
As many have said, this book is just too generic. Beyond that, I must take issue with the comments by "A reader from colorado" above. Millions of dogs die in shelters each year because breeders massively overproduce puppies to conform to some artificial human standard of beauty. Who the #)(@*$*( cares?! It's personality that counts. If you want a Rat Terrier or any dog-- do not go to a breeder but visit your local shelter or an on-line resource such as Petfinder.org. Breeding dogs should be criminal until every single unwanted canine has been placed in a permanent loving home. I have a rescue RT, and she is a fantastic girl. She had in fact been dumped by a breeder at animal control after she stopped "producing". Disgusting!

Pretty Good.......2003-04-03
Nice pictures with good information. Found better and more concise books however.
A complete suprise!.......2001-12-07
First and formost, if you are thinking of getting a Wire Fox, (or as my family call them, "Frankie dog's" -thats the name of our litte terroir) get one. They are the sweetest things on earth, and deffinatly the cutest also. Now for the book, talk about quality! We have had our book for about 6 years, and none of the pages are even ripped. The book gives detailed history of the breed, tips on feeding them, grooming them, and taking care of them. One time we wanted our groomer to cut Frankie a certain way, so we brought in the book and showed the groomer, she was so amazed and wanted to buy it off us! I have never had such a complete and thorough book that has beauty at the same time. Sometimes my mom and I will think that Frankies ears are in a weird position, or his stance is irregular, we just look in the book and sure enough, he's fine :) *****Overall~~~~ Great buy!
A Beautiful Book.......2000-11-05
The photos in this book will make you fall in love with the breed!
Finally - a Hand Book for the New WFT Owner.......2000-04-05
I was glad to finally find a reliable handbook on the WFT. This book did provide good information for any new puppy owner focusing on certain aspects of the WFT. The chapters on grooming and training were very beneficial. Although I felt a little overwhelmed with the history chapter it was interesting. The pictures throughout the book are beautiful. Since I have not been able to find any other books on the Wire Fox Terrier I would recommend this one to others.

Rat Dog Momma.......2002-04-16
I am purchasing this book and have not read it yet. This book was recommended to me by the breeder of my Toy Manchester Terrier. My husband and I first heard of the breed in a dog book and we started looking for a breeder. As luck would have it, we found a breeder on the other side of our state. They are a hard breed to find but well worth any work put into the search. Our dog is the sweetest baby and has been a delight to our families and friends and we are always asked about her by people on the street. It is true that it is hard to find much information on the breed. I am heartily in favor of any publication that gets the word out on the many virtues of this breed of dog and am looking forward to receiving my copy of this book by Phil Shane.
Good Basic Introduction.......2002-01-25
This book provides alot of good basic information about MT's maybe alittle more than you would get doing an intense web search.
I still feel I want another book or more information. Maybe I can only get the information I want from speaking to owners or breeders directly.
The pictures are super high gloss, almost scarely glossy.
This book has a bias to Toy Manchester Terriers purely because the author is a toy breeder. A lot of the pics are of toys.
I would recommend this book to prespective owners.
Simply Amazing.......2001-01-20
If you have ever looked for books on Manchester Terriers, you will know that there are not many out there. This book is incredible. Everything you would have ever wanted to know about the breed is included. Their past, proper diet, classifications, known illnesses etc. I would definitly recomend this book to owners of the breed.

THE BEST YORKIE GUIDE EVER PERIOD.......2007-05-01
This book is so specific to Yorkie needs! Not your general run of the mill yorkie book. Teaches yorkie pressure points to control bleeding, the dilemma between using a water bottle dripper to a water bowl. WOW; i am amazed at this detail. Also teaches you how to make their ears stand up. 5 STARS!
Barron's other success........2004-07-16
The Yorkshire Terrier Handbook is another magnificent entry in a very time deserving series. A very professional manual to dog: maintainence, feeding, behavioral issues, and several other categories. Since my grandparents own a male Yorkshire Terrier, this would be a recommendation for his training, health, and overall lifestyle. The series would serve any first time pet owner quite well. The binding quality is also complimentary, published in very firm paperback. No other pet guides have this type of high quality. Barron's is most certainly worthy of an acknowledgement for the well made pet handbooks.
It's a very useful book........2004-04-15
This book is very very useful. Not only it has lots of cute yorkie pics, but it contains lots of information about yorkshire terrier.

Husbands favorite.......2007-08-13
I bought this book for my husband who is a recent member of the JRTC and is planning on raising Jack Russel show dogs. He loved it! Thanks!
Advanced breed-specific information.......2002-09-06
The Jack Russell Terrier Handbook is like no other book available for the breed. The emphasis is on providing the most in-depth and up-to-date informaton about subjects vital to caring for and living with a JRT, including behavior problems and training, medicine and hereditary health problems, nutrition, genetics, and breeding. Information on fun stuff to do with your terrier, such as training for earthdog competitions or even going hunting, is also included, as are tamer diversions such as agility, racing, and conformation. This is not a book of pedigrees and show-win photos, but a book for people who enjoy the JRT in every facet of its being. Intersperced in the text are lots of color photos of JRTs in action, and tidbits of technical information (Terrier Tech) and facts (Jack Fact). A book for people who want to excel at JRT ownership.

It's a must read!

Ranging from the diminutive Yorkshire to the formidable Staffordshire, terriers constitute a large, robust, and feisty family of breeds, originally developed as hunters of rodents and small game. Barron's Pet Handbooks can be thought of as extra-large versions of our popular Pet Owner's Manuals series. The Handbooks have larger page counts, more color photos, and contain even more information on pet care than the Manuals. Written by breeders, veterinarians, and other pet care experts, they describe their title-animal's traits and present advice on feeding, health maintenance, and all other important aspects of animal care.
