Hands down, the best foaling attendant book.......2007-07-22
As far as I'm concerned, this book is required reading for all foaling attendants. Thank you Dr. Karen Hayes for writing it. The book covers a single topic, and does it better than any of the other foaling guides I've read (and I've read quite a few). Those other foaling guides are on a bookshelf; this is the book that goes in the foaling kit! It has saved our farm from disaster on more than one occasion. Dr. Hayes clearly, calmly and concisely communicates the important facts and techniques the foaling attendant needs to know. The detailed diagrams make all the difference in illuminating exactly what is going on at each stage of parturition. Detailed descriptions of what's normal and what's not, techniques for resolving problems before they become critical, and advice on what to attempt yourself and when to call the vet are invaluable. You will find other fine books about breeding, mare care and foal care, but this is the best book on the actual process of protecting and caring for your mare when it's time to deliver her foal. Dr. Hayes' more general horse care [...].is also highly recommended.
Good information, but..........2007-05-15
I would like to have more information regarding what to do next. The information was good, and the illustrations are helpful, but I needed to buy another book to help with what to do with the foal once it had arrived.
Great Book....Answered lots of questions.......2007-03-26
This book was shipped quickly and just in time....I had about 5 reading days before my first foal was born. I highly recommend this book to all breeders.
The Complete Book Of Foaling.......2007-02-11
Very informative book~! I have been foaling out mares for over 12 years and I learned quite a bit of information that I did not already realize~! An A+ book to have on hand~!
A gift for my Father.......2007-02-08
My Father liked the book very much. Could not stop reading it. He is buying a copy for my brother who actually does the foaling at the horse farm.

Great overview of what can be done for your horse........2007-06-08
This book serves as a wonderful reference for the health of my equines. It gives very descriptive things that can be done. Recently when my warmblood foundered, I found the suggestions very helpful and empowering. I got to implement some of them right away and therefore made my girl more comfortable in this hard situation. I highly recommend this book as it takes the mystery out of many different approaches of equine care and gives one the opportunity to make informed, well thought out choices.
Happy for the paperback.......2007-01-21
I own the hardback edition of this book and am very pleased the paperback edition has arrived. Sent it to a good friend looking for the pressure points of the horse, which Mary does a great job of showing in the sketches provided. This is the best alternative medicine book I have found for the horse.
Great.......2007-01-09
I bought this book for my girlfriend and she said that if she didn't have it she never would have passed some of her college classes last quarter.
Thank God for this book!!.......2003-02-15
As I am coming into more holistic approaches to life, I have found this book to be a Bible!! As it covers so many topics, giving guidance to directions for all of us, I can easily understand the value of this book!! Amust for all readers who want to keep their Equine healthy and sound --Naturally!!
Complete Holistic Care.... Brennan/Eckroate: a review.......2001-09-23
This comprehensive volume addresses dozens of concerns for the horse owner, covering traditional and alternative health practices. The book is very complete in covering the health care options in two sections. The first part dealing with health care is an overview of traditional and holistic options. The final section of the volume is a comprehensive listing (with photos) of typical horse ailments with specific recommendations for each one. The entire book is written in a style easily understandable by the novice, but not too simplistic for the experienced horse owner. Photos and very complete appendices round out the coverage for this topic. Additionally, Brennan includes a comprehensive horse management section which is equally impressive in its scope, covering topics such as diet, grooming, tack and trailering. This book is truly a "must have" for the concerned horse owner.

It was very helpful and helped in answering the usual questions that you might be too embarrassed to ask =D It also was good because it had many pictures that aided as well.

Great book
No color pictures.......2006-12-08
I just received this book. I find it quite outdated. The drawings and illustrations are poorly done. There are only a few black and white pictures. Just beware that this is a 1998 book and I am sure you can find a more updated horse book than this one.
Absolute must for new horse-lovers!.......2006-10-05
If you're considering doing ANYTHING with a horse in it, get this book. It's by far the most complete book on basic horse health, stabling, activities, breeds, etc. (And I do mean "basic".) Would have been five-stars for a glossary.
Horsey Lovers.......2006-07-22
My daughter wants us to buy her a horse. We didn't have a clue what to look for and this horse catalog gave us a thorough preview. We didn't fathom the expenses or the responsibilities of caring for a horse. An encyclopedic eyeopener that prepared us for reality.

Horse Sense.......2007-01-09
This is the first book I have come across that treats the whole range of what one might come across in being owned by a horse and what to do should they need help. There are of course some points not picked up amongst them the Connemara Pony which has been accepted into the thoroughbreds, and which are a delight to own, being half Arab and half or less West Irish bog ponies (from the Spanish Armada). Very good detail and sage advice and the how tos' included, a present for my Grandchild who is studying for Veterinarian
good reference book, but..........2005-09-27
Being a new horse owner, I found this book somewhat helpful. A multitude of horse illnesses, injuries and conditions are described in an easy to understand language making it a good reference book.
However, this book would have been greatly improved if there were photos of each of the conditions described (there are none).
It also would have been helpful if there were an index to look up conditions by their major or most common symptoms, something a horse owner can reference if their horse is ill or injured.
Very nice informative book.......2004-10-22
I have to disagree with the review from Guatemala. This book is not intended to make you a vet but to let you understand enough so you, your vet, and your horse can have intelligent interaction. To his specific gripe about dewormers I disagree. Just giving a dewormer without knowing what you are deworming for is wrong. Even for humans a stool sample is lab tested to know exactly what to treat....you'd do less for your horse? This book is exceptional in that it talks to you with the minimal of medical jargon and what is used is explained. I do agree with his review about getting the other book. Both are twins and compliment each other well. I would reccommend you get both.
Not specific enough.......2000-04-22
I found this book to be good for novices, but it lacks in-depth information about treatment. For instance, under parasite control it says "talk to your veterinarian" No list of common wormers, their activity, safety and recommended dosing schedule. At least here in Guatemala, the vet prefers for you to participate in the possible diagnoses and treatment options to make an informed decision. This book leaves me in the cold. I recommend you check out Dr. Giffin's manual for horse owners - much more detailed.
A book of information for anyone.......2000-02-02
This book is quite useful with an emphasis on the health and care of the horse. Essentially, it is a collection of articles written by veterinarians and other horse oriented people from the vet school. Reproduction takes up almost 150 pages. Other large topics covered include nutrition, diseases and disorders, and care. Other topics such as vaccinations, selection, transportation, breeds, and behavior. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone, since the articles cover information that horse owners should be aware of (such as the extensive disease articles), but might not be entirely educated about.
Book Description
Trailers are a fact of life in the horse world. Sooner or later, everyone who owns a horse will have to deal with a horse trailer in order to haul to shows, races, hunts, and perhaps even to veterinary clinics. Up to now, when horse owners wanted information on trailers they had to rely on magazine articles or word-of-mouth recommendations. Not anymore.
The Complete Guide to Buying, Maintaining, and Servicing a Horse Trailer is the first and only book for both owners and buyers of horse trailers. It's a resource that gives prospective buyers, faced with hundreds of models to choose from, the means to make the right choice. It's a manual that gives current owners information on maintaining and caring for their trailers. Foremost, they will learn from lifelong horsewoman Neva Scheve and Thomas G. Scheve, both respected industry insiders, that the safety and comfort of the horse should always be the primary concern. This authoritative book, with more than 175 illustrations, addresses a number of important topics, including how to:
- Determine whether to buy a new or a used trailer.
- Ask the right questions of the dealer or owner.
- Weigh the options and select the best model for your needs.
- Evaluate tow vehicles and hitches.
- Master pre-trip preparations.
- Care for your current trailer.
- Load, drive, and use a trailer safely.
- Deal with typical exterior, interior, electrical and mechanical problems.
- Assess the work of repairmen if the job is more than you can handle.
"Complete" is not just an idle word: this book has an appendix that gives the names and addresses of the major trailer manufacturers to contact for literature. In all, the Scheves have given horse owners everything they need to make an informed purchasing decision that will benefit themselves and their horses.

The Complete Guide to Buying, maintaing and servicing a horse trailer.......2007-09-18
the book itself is very informative and useful for a new trailer owner.
the disappointment that I feel is having the supplier say that the book is new and receive a new book but that has been scored from top to bottom on the front cover. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT! i tried to contact the supplier but they apparently don't have a useful email address.
good book.......2007-07-13
This book is well written. It gives lots of great information about horse trailers. I do wish there was more written about recommendations for the actual vehicles being used to pull the horse trailer.
No Horse Hauler Should Leave Home Without It!.......2004-04-06
Even if you have trailered horses for years, you will still find this book to be a "must have." It will remind experienced horsemen of checklists to follow for safe towing, and give the new comer an insightful, useful tutelage on the ins and outs of buying and hauling. Ms. Schreve has thorough research and experience to back up her advice. Absolutely excellent advice on being fullly prepared for on-road emergencies!
Many questions answered.......2001-12-02
I have started looking for my own trailer and this book has really answered a lot of questions that have been going through my mind as I have been shopping. It also has valuable information on the safty aspects for the horse. I have learned a lot and have been with horses for around five years. Highly recommend to anyone who currenly owns or is going to buy a trailer.
A "Must Read" for every horse owner!.......2001-06-30
This books points out so many issues regarding trailers and horses that should be "common sense", but are overlooked by the majority of trailer manufactures and unknown to the majority of horse owners. It debunks many of the current trailer fads and supports its positions with strong research and fact.
After reading this book and recalling what I've seen in the past; I will not put my horses in half the trailers out there (including ones I've used in the past).
Every horse that is transported deserves the benefit of the knowledge and advice in this book. You owe it to your equine partner!

Customer Reviews:
A perfect resource book for horses.......2005-03-29
I disagree with the last post. This book is the best resource book for everything about horses. It is well-researched, well-written, and easy to read. It is very easy to find the exact information you may be looking for and explains it all simply and clearly: the perfect book to have on hand for the beginner or even the experienced horseperson, especially when you're looking for accurate and concise information. It is also clever, humorous, and interesting. And yes, the sidebars are fabulous!
A milk-toast book on horses and horse care.......2005-01-06
As a first time horse owner and long-time animal lover I found that this book touched so lightly on subjects related to horses and horse care that I found it frustrating. It skimmed over subjects that warranted more information. I didn't feel after reading it that I had the information I needed. There certainly is some good information in the book but left me searching for better books on horses and horse care.
SIMPLY THE BEST BOOK ON HORSES!.......2003-06-26
This is simply the best book on the subject for anyone thinking of owning or learning to ride a horse, period. Any beginner should start here, and if you buy only one book, make it this one. Yet anyone can benefit from the accumulated wisdom.
The sidebars and boxes are particularly great. 5 Stars!
All-around terrific book for horse lovers and others.......2003-06-15
This is a well-organized, comprehensive, and engagingly written introduction to all aspects of horse lore and horse ownership. The authors are as friendly as they are entertaining. It's worth a read just to see what the next clever heading will be! Fortunately the text is also succinct and clear. All topics are presented in straightforward, highly readable prose. A detailed contents list provides easy topic-specific access, and there are appendixes to guide readers to information from other sources. A thoroughly enjoyable read, and a great gift for all age groups and interest levels.
A great primer on horses!.......2003-06-10
This treasure is jam-packed with basic info as well as trivia tidbits, such as "From the Horse's Mouth" and "Horse Lore" highlights. Covers everything from "accessories" to "zoning," and is easy, informative and entertaining reading.

excellent.......2007-10-02
This book is a well written easy to understand book. For the first time horse buyer, it is exactly what I wanted. The author not only tells you what you need to know about miniature horses and how to care for them, she also gives you ideas of how she raises her horses.
Best Overall Book.......2005-09-22
It is the best book I have found about miniature horses. It is very detailed and gives you alot of very important information you need in the care of mini's.I would highly reccomend this to anyone who is considering a miniature horse.
The Miniature Horse: The Complete Guide to the Fascinating World of Miniatures.......2005-08-31
This guide is incomplete and does not offer enough information for a novice miniature horse owner. Some topics (e.g. "training") are covered in such a rudimentary way that they should not even be introduced. In addition, the quality of the photographs is very poor.
The Miniature Horse: The Complete Guide to the Fascinating W.......2004-07-12
Just a wonderful book..It helped me with my 31 miniature horses and gave me alot of wonderful info.......I also go a similar book for my 15 regular sized horses.
THIS BOOK IS ONLY FOR NOVICES.......2000-11-21
I just got done reading this book. It is a very good "broad" overview of the world of miniature horses, but I am a little disappointed because on many of the aspects such as care, showing, conformation, etc. etc. the author instructs the reader to read "other" books that go into more detail. I feel that if you have never owned a horse before, and are interested in minis, it's a good book for you. But if you are like me, and already have knowledge of equine behavior, this may just be a simple review of what you already know. Definitly a good book for the novice, but the more experienced horse-person will not gain a whole lot.

The Complete Guide to Horses.......2005-05-13
This Complete Guide by Mary Gordon Watson is for any horse-loving person. It is filled with lots of facts such as how the horse functions and moves, many of the diseases they come in contact with, and much more! If you want to know how to care for a horse or need information about buying one, this is the one to choose. It tells you what to look for such as weight, vices, temperament, correct symmetrical proportions, etc. The fantastic pictures range from small to large and are all in color! Also, they really bring the horses to life and help you to better understand the descriptions. This is an awesome book and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves horses!
Perfect beginner book on the horse.......2004-12-10
I personally own this book and plan to purchase another one to give as a gift to a lady who runs a riding stable. She teaches younger riders and beginner adults. It is a nice addition to her library. It's beautifully done with prints, photographs, and general information on the breeds, different sports, health and care of the noble animal we know as the horse. If this is a consideration for purchase, I rate this as an excellent buy.
Excellent overview for the novice.......2001-09-02
Although no one area is covered in any great depth, it provides enough general knowledge to point the reader in the right direction for further research. General areas include basic physio information, care, tack ,feeding, health issues and diseases, an overview of various equestrian disciplines, and probably the most comprehensive (and well photographed) listing of known breeds with brief descriptions of each.
My 11 yr.-old daughter (new horse owner) was given a copy for her birthday last year and it is almost in tatters from constant use!
Very complete.......2001-01-02
This is a very complete book on horses. My daughter has spent much time pouring over it.
