Temple Grandin's "Thinking in Pictures", is a must read for anyone who is affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders. Her book is well written and provides a lot of insight into what life is like for a young adult on the spectrum. This has been especially helpful for my husband and I as our first Aspie (we have four) is heading off to college and the "real" world. Definitely worth the money.

Read this and Autism is more understandable (though still a mystery for those who do not have Autism) It also helps one to know better how to work with and interact with anyone having Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Aside from learning more about Autism, you will enjoy the writing and the stories used by the author.

More Conceptual than She Thinks.......2007-03-29

This book provides fascinating, intelligent, entertaining insights into the autistic mind.

Grandin is actually very conceptual, as the ability to use language requires, but appropriate concepts and contexts are difficult for her to define, seemingly due to a sensory system that leads to focusing on details rather than a broader scope. She and psychologists in general simply think she is largely non-conceptual due to their inadequate understanding of concepts, language, etc.

Actually, we all think in pictures; however, most of us use generalized, essentialized pictures most of the time for efficiency.

A grasp of how concepts are formed and organized, and how they are the essence of language, will help greatly. Best and easy to read for effective general psychology is "The Psychology of Self-Esteem," by Branden. Self-esteem is acquired from experience, not by choosing it. Emotions result from thoughts, not vice versa. The best and easy to read for the nature of concepts and language is "Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology," by Rand, and then for a comparison with other theories and how they go wrong "Evidence of the Senses," by Kelly.

Temple Grandin and Eleanor Roosevelt would have loved each other.......2007-03-06

Dip vat, squeeze machine, restraining chute...Temple Grandin makes poetry of these unlikely words, and out of the whole of the English language. It's a spiritual miracle that we experience the noise and overpowering smells of the stockyards, yet also find in them the triumph of compassion.

Quite simply, Grandin is one of the greatest women of the 20th and 21st centuries. She should be draped with laurels, carried through the streets on our shoulders as we sing our praise-songs; she should be awarded keys to cities, MacArthur Foundation buckets of money, a Nobel Prize, a Presidential Medal of Freedom...and any other accolade we can think of to bestow on her. Did I say she was one of the greatest women? Check that. She is one of the greatest human beings of any century.

In addition, she is delightful company. She humanizes scary conditions, autism and asperger's, evoking in readers compassion and curiosity they might not have known they had. In this regard, Grandin is a superb spiritual guide with abundant personal experience and vast knowledge, which she generously shares via neat, accessible anecdotes and lists.

Reading Grandin, it is easy to imagine being in the same room with her, listening wide-eyed, and never wanting her to leave. Some nights, I confess that I fall asleep thinking of her as a young girl, joyfully flying those kites in the park...

Frustrating, Hard to Understand.......2007-10-10

The first few pages were great - a story about an intelligent dog with a mind of its own, out chasing school buses, corralling skate-boarders and others, and protected by an owner who had bonded with him. Orson also learned to open the refrigerator, eat whatever he wanted, and then hide the packaging.

But Orson didn't fit in with urban N.J., leading its owner to buy a small farm in N.Y. and get over his own "mid-life" crisis. Unfortunately, Orson became less and less predictable, and more and more likely to nip at people. So Katz (owner and author) took Orson to the vet ($1,000 worth of tests with no result, then to an animal talker, and finally a shaman. Some improvement came from acupuncture (Orson had been hit by a car during his early days in N.J.), but the biggest improvement came when Katz bought an ATV to help his own mobility limitations due to injured legs.

Sadly, though, Orson again starts nipping, and even draws blood in instances when there was no known reason for him to. Katz, worried about his liability, decides to have Orson put to sleep.

So was Katz really bonded to Orson, or just decide he was a nuisance? Why didn't he put the dog away when people were around, and/or put up "Beware of the Dog" signs?

Definitely not the happy man-dog story I was looking forward to!

When I was given this book, I had no idea what it was about. Once I learned, I was almost sick to my stomach. Incredible to me that someone could write a "dog love story" that ends in the cruelest, most heartless betrayal imaginable. There is no justifying his action. Simply appalling. Be warned this book is no sweet story, but a frightening tale of justification.

No pleasure read.......2007-10-07

First I must say that many reviewers were too harsh on Katz. The problem was that Katz made a name for himself writing about dogs on his Bedlam Farm and one of the protagonists pays with his life in this book. Readers were expecting another easy read about happy dogs in New York.

Katz is not a dog expert nor a dog trainer. He simply is a good writer who writes about his dogs and his farm. His temperament is better suited for more docile breeds like retrievers and Labradors. A border collie and Katz are just a volatile mix. Collies need constant work and attention and are by nature restless. They need a steady job, they need constant life around them to be happy dogs.

Katz is a good writer and this book reads well. What bothered me were the last 30 pages; after the dog is euthenized it seemed the book lingered when it should have ended with Orson's last heartbeat. He spent the remaining pages defending his position to put his dog down. After hollistic treatments, visits to a shaman and accupuncture, he never once took the dog to a certified dog behaviorist? That seemed odd, and that is why I had little compassion for Katz. Orson deserved more.

Katz is of the belief that dogs must be trained, must not be dangerous and should not be treated as humans. If a dog bites or attacks, its fate is doomed. Many urbanites will agree with that. Orson was one such doomed canine, although I don't understand why he couldn't find a home for him (despite his feelings that he can't "recycle" pets with behaviorial problems) when there surely could have been people willing to take the dog in? With all his fame and website there were no takers? He put the dog down without telling anyone but his own veterinarian, and now he has to pay with his decision and spend more time explaining his decision. Had he been a true lover of Orson, he could have easily found a home for Orson that didn't have the stimuli that triggered his biting attacks. He needed a female to tend to his spirit. Instead Orson was paired with an impatient, demanding, overweight middle-aged man.

This was my first book by Katz and it will be my last. He can write all he wants to about dogs but the image I have is of his "good dog" Orson dying in his arms. Orson was a good dog. It was the owner who was bad and failed him. I don't understand how Amazon could recommend this book along with the more upbeat "Marley and Me" by John Grogan.

I live on a small hobby farm. I have 5 dogs, 4 horses and 1 cat to care for. I get up at 5AM to feed, muck out stalls, and take my dogs for a walk before going to a 37 1/2 hours a week job 24 1/2 miles from my home.
I know how much physical labor it takes to do all the routine tasks, let alone mend fences, pay veterinary bills, etc. I find myself to be a bit unsympathic to a person like Jon Katz who hires help whenever he needs it and who also seems to get rid of any animal on his farm who is more than he can handle emotionally and physically. Why not try harder to work with the more recalcitrant animals instead of shipping them off to another place or euthanizing them? Mr. Katz is correct in saying that most misbehavior on the part of our companion animals is a reflection of the confusion we send to our animals through conflicting or incorrect non-verbal signals.

IT'S JON KATZ THAT SHOULD BE PUT DOWN.......2007-09-18

A few problems with Jon Katz:
1. Puts an ultimate price on how much the life of the dog he supposedly loves is worth. Wouldn't spend the money to see if there was a physical reason for the biting.
2. Expends energy on trying to make this dog into what he thinks he should be. When this fails, at the first sign of real trouble, abandons this dog he supposedly loves and has him killed.
3. Professes to support responsible dog ownership, yet lets Orson be around people without warning signs, without being on a leash, without being in a muzzle near other people. If a child had been bitten it would have been Katz's fault.
4. Uses his shaman as a way to excuse himself from killing Orson because Orson is now "at peace". Of course he's at peace, he's dead.
5. Only buys from breeders - doesn't even attempt to adopt dogs from rescue organizations. Buying from breeders when there are plenty of pure breds in shelters and specific breed rescue organizations is inexcusable and irresponsible. The equivalent number of dogs he "purchased" were killed in shelters from lack of homes.
6. Doesn't want dogs in his life to honor them as individual beings and individual companions. He wants them to serve specific purposes in his life for his needs. The moment he gives up on making Orson into what he thought he should be, he kills him.
7. This man is selfish, and truly emotionally unprepared to fully commit to another being. He should have learned a ton about commitment from Orson - that one escaped him.
8. Orson changed his life? He returned the favor big time. Death is a major life change.

I love books - I shredded this one. Couldn't stand the thought of anyone else reading it.

It doesn't live up to the hype.......2007-09-19

Yes, it is remarkable that an autistic person has written a book about autism and how autistic people see the world and process information.

But that's the only thing that makes it remarkable - if the book were written by a non-autistic person, it wouldn't have found a publisher, at least not without some serious editing. The subject is highly interesting, and the ideas in the book are really thought-provoking, and it's too bad that as a reader I found it hard to get really engaged in the book. It is sometimes rambling, with choppy sentences, and frequently highly repetitive -- sentences that are almost the same are repeated, ideas are restated over and over. It got to the point that I felt while the book could have been condensed into a fascinating article, as a book it was frustrating and bloated, and needed a good editor to prune it by at least a third. Maybe the stilted prose and repetition are meant to provide a valid simulation of how an autistic person actually speaks, but it doesn't make a book readable to the rest of us.

Don't get me wrong, I think Temple Grandin is an amazingly successful person and she should be commended for sharing her world and knowledge with us. I just wish the quality of the final published version had been better - she deserves it.

A Must-Read for Oliver Sacks Fans.......2006-10-30

As you would expect from a book subtitled And Other Reports From My Life with Autism, Temple Grandin gives us a fascinating inside view of what it's like to be autistic. What you might not expect is how deftly she weaves neuroscience, animal behavior, humane practices in America's animal processing facilities, biochemistry, and even religion into this bestseller.

In contrast to the "experts" who tell us that there can be no true thinking or tool building without language, she's here to tell us that her visual, computer-like method of solving problems and getting along in the world are just as valid as any language-based solutions. Inspired by the opening lines of the Lord's Prayer, for example, she explains that she grew up with a very clear image of God working at an easel.

What's not obvious from the title is that she holds a Ph.D. in animal science and has designed one third of all the livestock handling facilities in the United States. Sometimes her beliefs about her charges' thoughts and feelings would appear hard to confirm. However, when she applies her ideas to the many facilities she has designed, the animals become calmer and step through their paces more easily. Some readers may find her more gruesome slaughterhouse experiences hard to stomach. But she seems to be stressing the vast improvements she has made rather than trying to gross out her audience.

Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, and often insightful, Thinking in Pictures is a treasure for anyone who wants to learn more about these topics.

Moving, inspiring, thought-provoking.......2006-03-23

Temple Grandin is an autistic who refused to take early retirement from life. With the help of her mother and some forward-thinking teachers, she drew upon her own inner resources, talents and strengths to move into the world of people who think in words and in two dimensions, rather than in 3-dimensional pictures.

I especially liked this book because it was highly informative. Ms. Grandin not only has a lot to say about autism, but goes into detail about an area that is obscure to most readers: Livestock handling. From any other writer, this might be a terribly dry and even distasteful subject, but her writing tone is one of great patience. She has learned how to bridge the comprehension gap by explaining in detail how she thinks and accomplishes various tasks.

I'd be honored to meet this lady and am hoping to attend one of her lectures some time. She helps us to understand that autistic people aren't so different from non-autistic people...and vice versa.

Owning Sibs and other breeds over the years I laughed till I had tears reading about Caesar. What a great read. Not that I recommend it for the bathroom reading but that is the only place my hubby will read. I walked past the door one day and he was laughing hysterically. I just knocked on the dog and asked "Caesar?" He replied "Lived that one before!"
After having lived with so many characters over the years it is easy to see that they really are true stories. If you have a dog lover in your life this should be in their stocking.

Reading this book, My Life in Dog Years was an OK book. You read all the different dogs' stories. What every dog's personality is, and what the dog does with him. Some stories are very interesting. It is an easy book to read. If you like reading about dogs, this book has all kinds of good stories.

My Life in Dog Years, written by Gary Paulsen was one of the funniest books I've read in a long time. Gary Paulsen has an extremely different way of writing from other authors. I have read a couple of his other books. This was probably not his best, but it was well written. I would highly recommend it for any dog lover.

The first hundred pages of this book almost gave me whiplash. When he claims to be hyperactive, I totally agree, because he jumps from story to story with no seeming connection. But once Clinton takes office, I assume he had the daily logs to guide him, and things got a little more linear.

That said, I loved every page for its entertaining stories and enterprising spirit. This guy really made a difference.

Best non-fiction book I read this year.......2007-06-15

For those who want real insight to politics over the last 25 years, with plenty of humour, Mcauliffe's recent book is a must. Written not by an elected official or a psuedo-philosopher, but by someone who was in the thick of the action in raising money and advising President Clinton and others in the Democratic Party since the 80's "What A Party" is a great read. Incisive and downright funny at times it is the best non-fiction book I read this year and far and away the best political memoir/commentary I have ever read. When I started I was sorry I wasn't in it and when I finished I was jealous I didn't write it. Buy it!

Great summary of the politics of politics. I could not help laughing throughout and it was enjoyable and easy reading. A must for every loyal Democrat.

Democratic Money Man.......2007-04-28

An entertaining auto-biography from a self-made millionaire who raises millions for the democrats. He's proud, but down to earth. A close friend to Bill Clinton. He's now Hillary's campaign manager. If you are a big fan of George Bush Jr., you'll have a hard time getting through this book.

A Brilliant Man's Journey.......2007-03-28

I picked up this book with lots of curiosity. I saw McAuliffe on Book TV surrounded by an army of celebrities (including Clinton and Bill O Reilly - what a combination!!) and expected a "usual" memoir backed with celebrity endorsements. Damn I was wrong. This book was fun to read and it sailed like a cheesecake.

I immensely enjoyed Terry's delightful style of storytelling. The book moves with a supersonic pace and I was surprised how fast I finished it.

There can be no arguments about Terry's passion towards "his" party and it's pretty apparent throughout the book. But, this book is more than his commitments to Democratic Party. It's about a hardworking, honest and a brilliant man's journey towards success told in a simple style that will sure entertain you.

This book is a great introduction to Dr. Goodall, physical anthropology, and primatology. Because it is written by Jane, the insight into the lives of the chimpanzees and the environment in general gives us her own personal message of hope and preservation for all creatures and places.

Excellent autobiography for young people as well as adults........2004-03-12

My 8 year old was assigned to do her monthly book report on a biography. She wanted to read about Abraham Lincoln... until she found out she had to dress up as the book's subject! Regrouping with a week to go and a driving vacation looming, I rushed to ...to find a children's biography available in audio download... and stumbled upon this gem. We all listened to the (abridged) audio version on the trip, and I do think that hearing it read by the author added a great deal. My daughter read the unabridged book with fascination when we got home, though I suspect she might have had more difficulty relating to the book had she not heard Jane Goodall speak her own words first. At any rate, the report (outfitted with khakis, a notebook, and a velcro-handed stuffed chimp) was a great success, and my daughter has met a role model of determination, compassion, and wisdom.

A Heart-warming Adventure.......2004-01-22

An excellent book! Reading about the extraordinary life Jane Goodall has led is fascinating in itself. Add to it the personalities of the chimps you get to know as you read the book and the adventures Jane Goodall has experienced, and you have a fascinating read. Other reviews recommend this book to children, I recommend it for adults as well. I am thirty-something years young and cried when I read parts of this. Dr. Goodall's love for these animals really comes through.

This is a beautiful book, grasping your atention and holding your hand thru a fantastic journey into Africa, and into the chimpanzes of the Gombe. You will get to meet all of them, and even see how they are like, observing the individual diferences of their behaviour. Parents: please purchase it for your kids! Kids: get your parents to buy it for you! Inspiring! I am now 22, but I must have been 10 when I first read this book (not this edition of course!). I still purchase Jane Goodall's books...and I'm following the dream she helped inspire: to go to a place no one can pronounce to study an animal few people care about...

This book is the story of Willie Morris' childhood companion, a dog named Skip. Willie recounts his adolescent years and all the fond memories of his dog and friends as they grew up together in small town Mississippi. The story is heartwarming and the author paints a very clear picture of all the shenanigans, good times and bad that he and his dog had together over the years. I liked this book; but I think a male reader would appreciate the bond between a boy and his dog more than I can.

Willie Morris was a truly great author! This story of his childhood with his dog was really heartwarming. It is so simple and warm and humorous, you will just love it. Warning: you will cry your eyes out at the end, but it's worth the pain. One of the best animal stories ever, I hope many kids read this in school. If you loved the movie "A Christmas Story" you will love this book. The movie version of "My Dog Skip" is also quite good, though it is kind of upsetting that in order to create drama the wonderful father of the book is kind of nasty in the movie. Willie Morris was a great author who also wrote a cat book entitled "My Cat Spit McGee" and several books about his life that remind me a little of Russel Baker's memoirs. One is entitled "North Toward Home", another "Good Old Boy" and one is about life in New York City.

Willie Morris has recounted the life of not just a boyhood pet, but a dear and close friend.
The Story of Skip's life as told by his owner is full of mythic adventures of childhood. Where every new day was full of joy and wonder. Morris' storytelling brings the dog, his family and the lush southern landscape into full and brilliant view.
When you read My Dog Skip you can just feel how much this young man loved and revered his dog.
Any of us who have had a much loved pet know that the bond between animal and human can reach so much further than just "pet and owner". Willie Morris makes the statement that Skip wasn't just his dog, but his brother... that is a beautiful thing. Morris grew up an only child but did not feel alone by any stretch of the imagination. He was loved deeply by and deeply loved his dog Skip.
Another great point made in this book is how Willie Morris learned so much from his dog Skip. He clearly states that the most lasting lessons he has learned about love and loyalty came from knowing his dog.
This book captures so well the love a boy or any human being can have for a pet... I loved the story and highly recommend it!

The perfect "nature awareness" book! The format of appearing like a scrapbook is captivating. I used this in my 4th grade classroom... much to my students' delight. They loved it! If you plan on going to the beach this summer, especially in the southeast, it is a must!

Turtle Summer, a Journal for my Daughter

This book presents a charming idea for a parent and child: to keep a nature scrapbook. Mary Alice Monroe has written and illustrated this enchanting journal of a mother and daughter's summer surveillance for loggerhead sea turtles on their beach. While watching the turtle nests, they observe and sketch nature's other offerings at the seashore. Like a family photo album, it is an intimate book.

Photographer Barbara J. Bergwerf teamed with Mary Alice Monroe to add exceptional and informative photos, including one of Carolina from the previous Sylvan Dell book, Carolina's Story: Sea Turtle's Get Sick Too! Outstanding humanitarian .......2007-08-09

The spiritual nature of these "beasts" comes through in each poem and story and essay. I found them each and every one to be powerful. They encourage me when I feel too run down to continue my little rescue efforts. This is from a man who practices what he preaches. Not only does he advocate on behalf of all homeless and abused pets,he also takes care of many of the ones no one else wants. Animals ask only for a safe place to rest, some clean water and decent food. Jim Willis reminds us that each of us can make the world a brighter, kinder place.

First of all I would like to say that I love this book. It is so heart touching. Second of all in reponse to Kat Lady. I am a former resident of Pender county. Pender County NC is a rural area and the mentality that many, many people in this area have towards animals is heartbreaking and unforgivable. I would be wiling to bet that those dogs that Mr. Willis took were probably being neglected and/or mistreated. The laws of this area often fail the animals and many die waiting for reports of animal abuse/neglect to be investigated or resolved. And not enough people in the area care enough to do any thing about it. Mr Willis taking those dogs may have the best thing that had ever or would ever happen to those dogs. I admittedly don't know the whole story, but I do know how many dogs in that area are treated-- kept chained their entire lives in the humid and severe NC heat without adequate provisions. So why not hold your judgement?

probation, was assessed $115.00 in court
costs and
received a fine of $570.00 in restitution. He

was
also ordered to have no contact with the
person he was
harassing and was ordered not to go on her
premises.

I'm only half way thru the book, as it lost my interest, I purchased it thinking that it was a story of a guy rescueing dogs, but as of yet, nothing, just poems, and short stories. not satisfied.

One of my favorites.......2007-01-10

I love this book. I bought copies as gifts for others. Anyone who has ever loved a pet will recognize the heartfelt thoughts of Jim. The essay "I Loved You Best" never fails to move me to tears, yet laughter also reigns supreme in these tales of the special bond between human and pet. That essay is one of my favorite pieces of writing of all time, and I'm a prolific reader and poetry lover. Jim's simple style and honest approach make for a wonderful and moving experience. If your heart has ever been touched by your own beloved pet, or by the throwaway unfortunates in our society, this book is a must.
