3 out of 5 stars Broken Spline.......2007-06-07

Received this book earlier then expected, but it had a broken spline. I am confused since I purchased a NEW book, not a used book. Splines do not break unless someone opens the book and presses down on the binding. This book clearly was not new!

Peaked inside of the book and appears well illustrated. Can't wait for the replacement. If they screw the replacement up, I'll pay extra and pick the book up at a local book store. They have already eaten up enough of my time returning the book to the post office to outweigh any discount price. Now I have to wait for transit both ways and the time for someone to review the merchandise. ARGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!

On the plus side, they did pay for shipment of the return (AS THEY SHOULD!!!!!!)

5 out of 5 stars Super book. Worth every penny!.......2007-04-14

I use this along with "The Fly Tier's Bible". The other books that I have I just don't seem to use very much by comparison. I particularly like the additional "variations" that they give for most patterns in this book. I find that often I like the "variation" better than the original pattern.

The only suggestion I would have for this book would be to have it available in a spiral version. Other fly pattern books often have this and it adds to the longevity of the binding.

5 out of 5 stars A very nice book.......2007-03-25

A very usefull book. Up to now maybe the best I own.
Starts from searching patterns giving detailed instructions for many classic and usefull dry, nymph and wet flies.
The second part of the books analize the various types of trout foods forms, from mayflies to stoneflies , caddis, midges, damselflies, back swimmers, scuds, leeches, terrestrials and for each gives detailed instructions for natural stages.
A "Must have" for all beginners where also experienced tyers can find good advices.

I have been an owner of this book for over 5 years and refer to it frequently. It is readable, well-illustrated and consistently useful to any fly fisher. I regard this book as an old friend and recommend it highly.

If fly-fishing were run like baseball, at the entrance to every river, stream, lake, and pond you'd find a vendor with a stack of Essential Trout Flies shouting, "You can't tell the flies without a scorecard." Since it's not, you'll just have to pick up a copy before your next outing on the water. Given that even seasoned sophisticates have trouble telling their pale morning sparkle duns from their cream sparkle duns without some reference, Essential Trout Flies is as essential as its title promises--both for fishing and for tying.

The author of numerous books on angling tactics and equipment, Dave Hughes has assembled a color-filled collection of what he calls the 31 pattern styles and the most useful variations that no fly-fanatic can do without. After a general section on fly-tying materials and techniques, he considers the flies themselves, separating them into three chapters: dries, nymphs, and wet flies and streamers. Then the fun starts. For each of his 31 basic patterns, he provides a history of the pattern and an entomological introduction, a photo of the fly followed by detailed instructions--via continuous text and an accompanying series of color photos--for tying it, pictures of six useful variations, and some notes on the best strategies for fishing them--e.g., when should you use a stimulator, a hopper, or a wulff?

For an experienced tyer, this is a terrifically handy and easy-to-use reference; with variations, the 31 patterns multiply to more than 200 proven trout flies. If you just like to fish, Essential Trout Flies is just as handy. It will help you identify flies, understand their entomological basis, sort them into easy-to-recognize categories, and select what you need to carry on-stream at different times of the year. Unfortunately, actually finding the fish is something you'll still have to do yourself. --Jeff Silverman

4 out of 5 stars Essential Trout Flies.......2007-03-12

Very good book regarding a variety of patterns. This book would enable the reader the ability to tie any style especially for west of the Rocky mountains.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for the serious fly fisherman.......2007-01-10

What a great book. Of course anything by Dave Hughes is well written, very informative, I love all pictures! Just a great addition to any fly fisherman's library. It really helped me sort our what I needed versus buying a bunch of flies I'll never use.

5 out of 5 stars Hughes' Magnum opus.......2006-10-25

This is undoubtedly Hughes' magnum opus--whether intended or not--and will stand as a classic in fly fishing literature. He has written the book that he and countless other authors have been trying to produce for decades. Consider all of the benefits of this book. Not only is it organized around a practical, useful strategy for tying flies, but it systematically covers every type of fly genre, from dries to streamers and beyond, and provides excellent information on every aspect of using them. Basically, Hughes tells you how and why to fish each style of fly and even coaches readers on how to rig their gear. In short, this is a masterfully conceived, accessible handbook that is indispensible for fly fishers at all levels. However, if you are an intermediate fly fisher who wants to graduate from fishing attractors to matching hatches--ie, knowing how and why to fish specific flies in a given situation and also tying those patterns--this book will produce excellent results. This stands alongside Sheridan Anderson's "Curtis Creek Manifesto" and John Geirach's "Fly Fishing Small Streams" as the most entertaining, accesssible, and useful books in the genre.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference, low price.......2006-07-07

I have only been tying flies for 3 years and I use this book like a bible. It is well written and takes a lot of the guesswork out of tying new patterns. Like others have said, the variations section is very valuable and the added text tells you what insects the variations are matching. Also contains helpful tips on what types of water each style should be fished. If you are just getting in to tying and are feeling overwhelmed by the number of patterns out there, then BUY THIS BOOK. It's an awesome primer and I have caught and released numerous trout by tying the main patterns that Dave suggests. Also, the beginning of the book offers advice on tying materials and the basic stuff you should have. I highly recommend this book to the beginning tyer and also for those who are more experienced. Tight lines!

If you need quick reference to fly patterns, this is the book. Great photos..Highly recommended.

Book Description

Sylvester Nemes is singlehandedly responsible for the popularity of the soft-hackled fly in American fly fishing today. The Soft-Hackled Fly, Nemes's first book, written in 1975, was the catalyst for the resurgence. Now revised with ten new chapters on tiny flies and full-color photos, Nemes shares colorful experiences at home and abroad, the history of the soft-hackled fly, and illustrated step-by-step instructions for tying the flies. He also describes his technique of fishing the flies.

Here is what our forefathers were doing successfully in a delightful and deadly method of fly fishing.Simple and very effective.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ BOOK FOR FLYFISHERS.......2007-07-21

This is simply a great book. It is written with a fantastic style that makes you want to run out and tie up a bunch of softhackles and fish them the way Mr. Nemes does. The section on tiny soft hackles is important for anyone who fishes midges, tricos and other small hatches as it gives much information and options to match the hatch!

4 out of 5 stars Surprised how much I liked this book.......2007-05-16

This book can only be described as charming.

I am not normally interested in older books on trout fishing - somehow they just don't seem relevant to me. There are superb modern books and authors on the subject. However I purchased this book (originally written 1975) as I am keen on soft hackled flies and every up to date text on the subject waxed lyrical about it. I was glad I did. Not only was the practical information good, but the delivery was inspiring and poetic.

Utterly charming book!

5 out of 5 stars This will change your fishing.......2007-05-12

Nemes methodically but artfully convinced me to use these flies and I now enjoy fly fishing more than ever. Must-read.

5 out of 5 stars Great Piece on both tying and fishing soft hackles.......2007-01-14

This little book is a great read--good examples of how to fish the flies and how to tie them. The section on tiny soft hackles is a nice addition. Mr. Nemes's style of writing is pleasant to read as well.

Hailed as a classic almost as soon as it came out in the early 1980s, this combination of entomology and fly-fishing instruction puts a small insect--the caddis fly--under the microscope to help anglers get big results on the water. Misunderstood for years, LaFontaine explains why caddis should be an important part of any fly-fisher's arsenal of flies, and his arguments are very persuasive. With in-depth and anecdote-punctuated discussions of the insect's biology and life cycle, tactics for deciding at what stage in the life cycle caddis are being fed upon (nymph, emerger, or dun), and various methods of presenting imitations, the author provides a thorough and scientific approach to catching fish. Caddisflies is analytical fly-fishing instruction at its best.

Book Description

Introduces tested patterns and details strategies on how best to fish larvae, pupae, and adult flies.

5 out of 5 stars Get a PhD in Caddis.......2007-09-21

As LaFontaine states midway through the book, "The study of caddisflies is the graduate school of an angler's education." His book clearly mirrors both the diversity and complexity of its subject matter - caddisflies. LaFontaine mastery of the bug and how to present it to trout in it's varying life stages is apparent. But the crowning achievement in these pages is the bridge LaFontaine builds between this insect's world and the mind of the angler. It's a bridge every angler must eventually cross in order to master the complex interaction between these bugs and feeding trout. I couldn't really come up with the number of days and the river miles you would need to wade in order to gain the knowledge Lafontaine distills onto paper... but a lifetime wouldn't be a stretch here (wearing out many pairs of wading boots along the way).

The writing takes a no-nonsense approach, but you feel his excitement and willingness to share the insight he has gained with the reader. The expression "doing one's homework" comes to mind when reading Caddisflies. Lafontaine spent ten years of intensive study (and of course fly-fishing) to develop the material and support his observations. As he put it: "It was not writing that took so long... The subject, however, proved to be so fascinating that it deserved much more than just a rehash of the past literature or a smattering of untested opinions."

Lafontaine structures the content into two parts: (1) Tying and Fishing Caddisfly Imitations and (2) The Biology of Caddisflies. The first part of the book is likely as comprehensive and authoritative treatment of tying and fishing caddisfly patterns you'll find published today. Even if you don't seat behind the vise tying these flies, the chapters offer as much "why" as they do "how" (i.e., the thinking behind using a particular material, color, shape).

The second half focuses on the biology of these amazing insects with well over 1200 species of caddisflies in North America. Lafontaine highlights a key attribute leading to their bio-diversity today: "Caddisflies basically owe their diversification in the aquatic world to the ability to make silk. This is the evolutionary tactic, a wonderfully functional tool, that has been used in so many ways to solve problems of dislodgement, food gathering, respiration, and protection." A comprehensive listing of each caddisfly genera provides a great reference. To aid the angler, Lafontanie uses the listing to emphasize the species which are more likely to force a trout into selective feeding.

After reading Caddisflies, I'm not ready to claim I've completed the caddis "graduate school of angling." That claim may come after a couple more readings and application on the water. I can say for certain that my appreciation and understanding of caddisflies has gone up dramatically.

5 out of 5 stars Best American fly-fishing book ever written........2007-07-15

Not necessarily the best writing per se, but if you ever wondered: Can a fly-fishing book put forward the synopsis of a novel insight into fly-fishing that does both: (1) helps you catch fish, and concurrently (2) could stand alone as a novel scientific study of trout behavior?

The only book that I have ever read that can answer "yes" is this book.

I would love to hear about other books, maybe Gordon or Hewitt have something out there from the early 1900s (???), but for sure this book is the most original contribution to American fly-fishing in the past 30 years.

This is the book to have if you fly fish or ty flies. Thats all that needs to be said!!!

5 out of 5 stars Classic on the Caddis.......2007-03-27

Book Description

Avid sport fishermen will treasure this book—which is nearly as beautiful as the objects it describes. Fly-tying is a highly prized fisherman’s craft, but it’s also an art form, wonderfully captured in this volume’s hundreds of color photos. Each of 100 fly patterns is presented in a two-page spread: an enlarged photo and textual description on the left-hand page, complemented with a set of step-by-step, clearly captioned photos on the facing page. In addition, fishing enthusiasts will find sections on fly-tying tools and materials plus general instructions for getting started. The author, a well-known fly-tier and sport fisherman gives instructions on making traditional trout and salmon flies—all of them fish catchers of proven effectiveness in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Examples vary in complexity, with patterns to fit every skill level from novice to expert fly-tier. Here are dry flies, nymphs and bugs, wet flies, streamers, and hairwings—a virtually complete selection of traditional and up-to-date examples of the art. The book’s hidden spiral binding keeps its pages opened flat, which makes it ideal for reference at the workbench. More than 600 color photos.

This is a great book, especially if you want to learn flies that will catch the trout and salmon. It is really good for beginners to intermediate fly tiers. And the old-timers can learn new patterns. Probably won't need any other trout fly tying book for quite some time with this one.

It's easy to forget that in between his collections of essays, John Gierach has published a number of slender volumes, each devoted to a single aspect of fly-fishing and usually of a more technical nature. Flyfishing the High Country and Fishing Bamboo come to mind. Some readers may grouse that these tracts are more about one angler's proclivities and lack the lode of quotable lines of the essay collections--and they'd be right--but like a comfortable old pair of waders, they get the job done in a familiar sort of way, which is to say they mark the developments of an ever-changing pursuit at a particular time, with a nod to the author's own role therein. If it sometimes seems like Gierach can write them in his sleep, so be it; that's what happens when the honing of style meets extensive first-hand experience. Good Flies finds Gierach behind the fly-tying vise, sorting through his neck feathers and homemade bodkins in an effort to make sense of his own fly-tying tendencies within the larger, centuries-old tradition. "Tying our own flies is where many of us go off the deep end in fly fishing," he admits in the introduction as a caveat emptor. Non-tiers might lose interest in the subsequent chapters of seeming arcana covering everything from the pros of spade hackle (essential for dry-fly tails) to the cons of beadheads (they're ugly). But amid this abundance of information and opinion, Gierach's puckish, Twain-like sensibilities poke through just enough so that any fly-fisher with a taste for the sport's hallowed literature, regardless of whether he ties his own, can settle back with a copy of Good Flies and enjoy the drift. Gierach has been around. He remembers when Dave's hopper first jumped into the scene as well as the nutty "graduate students" in the '70s who fished with "dinky little, otherwise useless rods, pocket-watch-sized reels, and leaders as fine as spider web" in order to catch the midge hatch before anyone really knew what a midge was. Tiers may take issue with some points, but they're more than likely to come away with some new ideas, too. It's all part of the ongoing riverside chat that John Gierach has been having with fly-fishers for the past two decades. --Langdon Cook

Book Description

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars 10 star must own for the serious authentic fly fisherman.......2004-07-11

Aside from the utterly awesome and accurate illustrations of dozens of flies, its the honesty of the author I appreciate. In reading how he came to tie his own flies I felt a kindred spirit because he mentioned, the artistic as well as the frugal, self reliant, and even scientific in a 'quaint, naturalistic sense' of tying ones own flies.

And that he looked at successful fly fisherman and their fly boxes and like himself and myself he saw a motley crew of flies, from 'either to long and gangly or short and stubby, neat or sloppy, trim or fat, bright or dull. They all caught fish in the right hands, and some of the best of them really did look like drowned rats'.

I had to laugh when I read on page 5 where he writes 'I also ran into the idea of flies as art, which further complicated things. I don't mean really well tied fishing flies, I mean display flies tied by people who had no intention of ever showing them to a fish,' since I have know people like that. Sadly they aren't good fisherman and in a couple instances tied flies that probably would have scared fish away.

Like the author 'For as long as I've fished with a fly rod, I've had a self conscious weakness for dry flies; first because of their puffed-up classiness, later in spite of it. Dry fly fishing may or may not be the most demanding way to catch fish, but everything about it is visual and beautiful and I've always been a sucker for that kind of thing'. (page 31)

The way the author describes the ins and outs of various flies along with accurate illustrations is a college level educational experience. He shares where he has fished with various flies, successfully as well as what each is made of. Which ones he uses most and why. Here is an example:

Page 39 'Blue Winged Olive Palm Merger. I tie it on either a Tiemco 200R or a Mustad 94840 hook in sizes 18 and 20. It has a long, sparse tail of wood-duck flank for a trailing nymph shuck, a body of olive goose biot, a small dubbed thorax (I use A.K.'s Blue Wing Olive blend), and a sparse, dun hen collar hackle. It looks like a traditional soft-hackled wet fly, and you can squeeze it wet so it sinks a fraction of an inch or grease it so it floats low in the surface film, where it works as an emerger or a crippled dun'.

He covers materials, hooks and tools needed as well as small, medium and large flies as well as spinners, midges, caddis damsels and hoppers, nymphs and streamers. Starting on page 134 he does in-depth explanations of what makes the various caddis i.e. 'Elk-Hair Caddis Light, hook mustard 94840, size 12-18;Thread yellow 8/0;Body:Yellow rabbit-fur dubbing, thin. Palmer hackle: medium ginger. Wing: sparse blond or medium bleached elk, tied down-wing style with the butts clipped to form a small head'. Now this is valuable information because it allows the novice or master to know what supplies to have on hand.

My Dad and brother are/were avid hunters and reading this book I was constantly reminded of why my family saved certain hides of elk, deer, rabbits, pheasant, quail, for flies. At the time I never gave it much thought and assumed everyone did. Not until I was an adult and happened upon a fly tie class where people were told where to purchase the stuff did it dawn on me that not everyone is the real McCoy.

5 out of 5 stars Fun reading.......2002-03-26

This book is great fun to read and gives you a better perspective on flies and there history. The chapters are well thought out and very enjoyable to read. The tools and materials chapter is very good also. Like all of Geirach's book it is a good read that you will read again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Duh..........2001-03-30

John Gierach's straight to the point, matter of factness on flies, trout's selectivity (or lack thereof) and his total lack of sacred cows on the stream is a hoot.

When you buy this one (and you WILL buy it, if not now then eventually) have a good seat, expect a fun and informative read: it's not entirely what you're expecting. Most of what you're expecting is there... but, hey, it's John after all.

5 out of 5 stars This man thinks about flies.......2001-02-23

It's hard to sit still long enough to read this book. Every few pages has me up out of my seat--what am I doing reading, when I could be at the vise creating? Gierach offers several ideas in this book that I've tried and like (Now, what will I do with all those Wooly Buggers tied the old way?). Of course, his preferences and biases don't always gel with my own, nor with those of other tier-authors. But even when I disagree (I like the looks of beadheads), the preferences he explains in this book offer plenty to think about. In addition, he offers some unforgetable common sense anecdotes reminscent of the stories in books like _Sex, Death, and Fly-Fishing_.

One quibble: The cover blurb compares Gierach favorably with Mark Twain. As a humorist I think Twain may remain above Gierach. But Gierach's reputation as a humorist after the manner of Twain fails to offer justice to the range of Gierach's work.

3 out of 5 stars Lightweight flies.......2001-01-21

Disappointing: I thought this one was not up to Geirach's own standard of idiosyncracy, his way with a "serious" fishing topic --and I definitely challenge to the reductionist flyfisher/reviewer who said "flies are just means to and end" --so lures and flies are the same? Then why bother.

Puck John's books usually light up something -- something that stays with you above and beyond fishing. When you blow away the clever bits here, there's not much news or insight, as here was in Bamboo. If anybody could unravel the sphinx nature of some fly patterns, it woulda been him.

But not.

PS: I think the legend on the half title page is misattributed, to Wendell Barry 9s9c) = Berry. Anyone else get that?

4 out of 5 stars Good Catalogue of flies.......2002-02-16

This book contains good photographs of many different kinds of flies, dries, nymphs, terrestials etc, and the recipe for tying them. Many of these flies are good for warm water species too. This is not a book on how to tie flies but the instructions will give a reasonably experienced tier enough information to produce the fly. Be aware that some early editions of the book are missing one chapter and part of 2 others (pages 49 through 64). Buy only later editions and printings. Used copies should be suspect.

5 out of 5 stars Flys for Trout.......1999-12-11

This has been one of my key references in tying flys for my fishing in Michigan and Colorado. The instructions are clear, and color photos are excellent. I particularily liked the variety of patterns.

4 out of 5 stars Good range of patterns.......1998-11-25

This book brings you an excellent variety of patterns of all types. Well organized and well illustrated. Worth it!

"No tier of that period was as creative in designing patterns or tied better quality, more lifelike streamers than Mrs. Stevens. This biography has been carefully researched and beautifully written."- Keith Fulsher, master fly tier, originator of the Thunder Creek series

Carrie Stevens (1882-1970) of Upper Dam, Maine, created some of the most beautiful and enduring streamer patterns ever, including the legendary Gray Ghost, which she designed to catch the giant brook trout and landlocked salmon of the Rangeley Lakes. This long-awaited book is both a history of the woman and the region, as well as a guide to the Stevens method. It includes color plates of original patterns, some only recently discovered, along with a biography illustrated with archival photos. The tying section lists dressings for more than 100 streamers, 65 of which have never been published.

Graydon R. Hilyard has been studying Carrie Stevens and collecting her work for fifteen years. His son Leslie, a champion fly tier, tied patterns for the book and contributed to the research.

4 out of 5 stars Peculiar.......2000-12-15

This is an odd book. Playboy of the month for June, 1997, Carrie Stevens had distinctive flame-red hair and firm, natural breasts. However, in the three years since then, she appears to have gone downhill in the looks department, and moved to an alternative career as a fisherwoman. This is quite odd, as Playmates usually attempt a career in acting or, in the modern era, as 'goddesses of the web'. Carrie's decision to take such a drastic career move is surely evidence of a strong personality, one which separates her from the traditionally airheaded view of Playmates. Nice one, Carrie!

5 out of 5 stars The Real History of Streamers.......2000-05-27

This is a superlative book on a par with The Art of the Salmon Fly by J.Bates. It has many beautiful photos of the streamers, well laid out and functionally depicted. The first half of the book tells in detail what was happening in the Rangely Lakes region and is a wonderful vingette of the real history of the lakes. The second half concentrates on the flies and tying. With photos of highest quality and fine desciptions, this is a book that will last. The tie-in to Joe Bates was, for me, a treat as he lived in my town and I visited him on several occassions. This was just the book I was lookng for on streamers. It has a look of substance, great directions, and clear recipies. If you are a serious fly fisherman, or want to be this book belongs on your shelf. There is a lot of junk out there on modern fly fishing, this book is a huge contrast. I am amazed by the amount of research that went into it;it is no wonder that it took fifteen years to compile. If you are like me, and want a book that shows high quality text and graphics and patterns that are legendary and useful , buy this book without hesitation. I read it the first day it came.Good job by this father and son team.

5 out of 5 stars A Must For Any Fly Fisherman's Library.......2000-04-15

I was unable to put this book down until I had read the entire contents. It is a historical treasure, rich in information and photographs that will be greatly appreciated by any fly fisherman. The color photographic and printing quality is excellent. A significant portion of the book is filled with details on the Stevens streamer fly patterns and the specific information for a fly tyer to create them. A great combination of fly fishing history and a fly tying "cook book". I plan to buy a number of additional copies for gifts to fishing friends.
