Book Description
A complete guide to tying some of fishing's most timeless and beautiful flies.
Tying Classic Freshwater Streamers is the first book to show you in detailed step-by-step photos and complete instructions how to tie such patterns as the Gray Ghost, Lady Doctor, and Chief Needahbah. Klausmeyer explains how to make durable tandem-hook rigs for tying classic trolling streamers and how to tie marabou- and hair-wing streamers. This important book also features complete instructions for dressing modern fish-catching "classics" such as the Muddler Minnow and Thunder Creek series.
Tying Classic Freshwater Streamers includes a comprehensive discussion of material selection and photos of additional flies-with recipes-dressed by some of the best tiers in the country. Klausmeyer is well known for his finely detailed and stunningly beautiful fly photography. Here he features more than 230 exquisite photographs.

Excellant Resource.......2006-03-10
Although I am only a 'novice' at tying flies, I consider myself somewhat an expert at reading instructive text. Being somewhat of a mizer, I would much rather purchase a book I can peruse hundreds of times than pay for a class, therefore I took the chance on "Tying Classic Freshwater Streamers: An Illustrated Step-by-Step Guide, by David Klausmeyer." David has outdone himself even in the absence of his favorite illustrator, photographer, mentor and close friend Lawrence Largay to whom he dedicates this book.
I have had the book in my possession only a few short weeks and have already tackled some of the fly-patterns listed inside. I found the instructions and illistrations so easily followed that I had completed my first beautiful "Classic Streamer" in less than 20 minutes. I must admit they did not have the quality of the author David Klausmeyer, and I did alter them slightly because I can not yet afford the price of the radiant jungle cock, but I had such a great time I know I will not only try to fish these first flies, but will (in the future) try to tie a few for a presentation frame or two. Furthermore in the back of this text there is a rather large gallery--over 50 pages--of Classic Streamers tied by the best of the best. Taking the risk of repeating myself, this book is the best of the best in instruction and illustruction.
So, if you are a fly-tyer looking for an afternoon to enjoy tying something other than that wooly bugger, stonefly, crawfish, clouser or cypert minnow, then this book is for you. Step back in time when glamorous feathers imitated your favorite baitfish and tie your own Classic Freshwater Streamer.
Beautiful, But Flawed...........2005-11-20
Klausmeyer Produces a Book that is much Needed and Certainly Called for... Methods of Tying Classic Streamer patterns... KLausmeyer Has produced a Book that is Loaded with beautiful Photographs of Beautiful Streamers and Clear Step by Step Photos so that Fly Tyers, who have never Ventured into Tying Classic Streamers Will Be able to Produce Decent Replicas...
However, there are an Above Average Number of Mistakes in the Book... Flies Patterns attributed to Tyers who Never Designed/Originated them... There are at Least 4 Times where I noticed this Occurred in the "Streamer Gallery" at the end of the Book...
Also, There's the Instance of Klausmeyer Misnaming a Wonderful Book...Using the Word "LOST" instead of the Correct "FORGOTTEN"......
Not that these Take away from the Over all Beauty & usefulness of this Book... This Book is Pure "Eye Candy" for the Fly Tyer... The Gallery alone is worth the Price, because of the Often Breath taking Beauty of a great many of the Featured Streamers....
It's Just that Kausmeyer, being the Editor of Fly Tyer magazine, should have done a Better Job at Editing & Researching the Streamers he was going to feature in the Book. If there was a Deadline, It's No excuse for Mis-information & Half-hearted Editing...
I Do Really Enjoy the Book, but the Numerous Mistakes and such take away from what should be a Spotless, Wonderful addition to Any Fly Tyer's Library

Salmon flies, those colorful yet seemingly impossible creations of fur and feathers on a deadly hook, are within the reach of any fly-tier prepared to study the secrets of several generations of fly-tying pioneers. Editor Michael Radencich goes a long way to present the most up-to-date information on this hallowed art form in the big, beautiful Tying the Classic Salmon Fly: A Modern Approach to Traditional Techniques. With large, crisp color photographs and detailed step-by-step tying instructions, this is a comprehensive guide that instructs while dazzling the eye. You may even want two copies--one for the tying desk and one for the coffee table.
Customer Reviews:
easy instruction.......2007-03-21
The last 2 chapters may come in handy over the years, but the first 3/4 of the book are excellent
Awsome.......2007-01-19
For a modern approach there is no one better than Radencich. To tie with such perfection; its great to see he is sharing his secrets.
a good place to start.......2005-09-19
If you are a fly tyer of any sort and want to try your hand at traditional featherwing flys this is an excellent place to start. With enough hisorical background and excellent menus this volume gives in great detail methods to perform the traditional tasks as well as how to build the flys themselves.
An Essential Reference Work.......2000-08-23
Distinguished by sharp colour photography and clean layout, this book is highly recommended as a reference work for anyone interested in tying and presenting the Classic Salmon fly. I enjoyed the chapter on hook making, (flashbacks to college metal work days), and having previously undertaken some picture framing, found the tips in the fly mounting chapter very useful. The colour photography of the Traherne collection and other patterns presented is excellent. The books contents will be of considerable use to beginner and expert alike.
Superb Photographs and a well done presentation.......2000-02-16
Radencich has produced a work of art in this book. The photographs are outstanding, and there are not enough superlatives to do them justice. The steps are so well done as to present a short course in photos alone. Very well done.
As other reviewers have noted, this book is not strong on its historical content or presentation of utilitarian (read: flies for fish...) patterns. It also goes into excruciating detail on wall mounts which while interesting, might have been better spent on other patterns. I found the section on hook making to be very interesting and unique in the literature of salmon flies. This book is hard to put down and sets a new standard of graphics for this genre. Well done, Michael.
Book Description
Working with tinsels, feathers, silks, furs, wool, and threads
Instructions from a master tier on all materials--traditional and modern--and how to use them
Building on Tying the Classic Salmon Fly, which demonstrates techniques for tying even the most complicated fully dressed salmon flies, Classic Salmon Fly Materials provides an in-depth look at all the possibile ingredients and methods for tying these flies. Starting with the first elements, hook and thread, Radencich gives guidance on working with peacock or ostrich herl and adding body hackles, throat hackles, and collars. He explains which feathers are best suited to each type of hackle and how to fold a hackle and tie in a throat hackle. He then moves on to the most distinguishing element of a fully dressed classic salmon fly, the wings. A discussion of underwings and married and full-feather wings follows, with details on the advantages and disadvantages of each kind of feather. Radencich pulls it all together by giving complete instructions for tying the Carnegie, with expert advice on choosing the proper materials and methods.
Customer Reviews:
excellent advise with usable materialt.......2007-05-19
primarily for the advance fly tyer, however, it is filled with good advise that can be used in tying any fly
A good Addition to a Fly Tyers Library.......2007-04-04
This book contains excellent photography, many detailed descriptions on feather preparation and manipulation from the start to finish of a Traditional Salmon Fly. This book is an excellent addition to the author's first book. "Tying the Classic Salmon Fly."
The flies are reminiscent of the true Salmon fishing fly. The low sleek wings necessary for a fly to swim is shown in detail.
I was expecting to see more substitute materials used in place of the materials which are on the protected list, C.I.T.E.S. (Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species).
Classic Salmon Fly Materials: The Reference?.......2007-03-12
While it is well organized and contains beautiful materials, this book, in my opinion, falls short of its title. When I purchased the book I expected it to be a visual, historical, and an encyclopedic "reference to all materials used in constructing classic salmon flies," covering natural materials, imitation and substitue materials as well as flossing technique and other methods that are not well disucssed in other books. I expected this work to break from the tradition of guarded methods and tricks that have not otherwise been published. This book simply follows the pattern of preceding classic salmon fly how-to books, but features much better picture quality. I think this book lacks the content that it's title suggest's it contains.
However, Radencich's first book, Tying the Classic Salmon Fly, is a fine example of a high quality reference book on tying classics including: feather preparation, floss work, ribbing and such through beautifully photographed pattern step-by-steps. It also included things such as classic fly patterns, custom hook making, matting & framing flies, and dying materials.

Great Book.......2007-01-19
A must for a Classic Salmon Fly tiers. Great technique and patterns. Useful information on substitue feathers and materials.
A superb addition to salmon fly-fishing reference libraries.......2005-03-10
Written by leading salmon fly tyer and designer Ron Alcott, who has contributed to such reknowned journals as "American Angler and Fly Tyler", "Atlantic Salmon Journal" and "The Flyfisher", Building Classic Salmon Flies is a guide for featherwing salmon fly tyers of all experience levels. Full color photographs and detailed instructions showcase a wide variety of lures so skillfully done as to approach the realm of art. An extensive primer to fly tying describes the meaning of basic terminology, ideal proportions, materials most often used, and more. A superb addition to salmon fly-fishing reference libraries, and spiral bound for easy practical use in the field.
The best book to start with for a future salmon fly tier.......2004-03-20
I have been tying the classics for about 8 yrs. now and I can look back and say that Ron Alcott's book and tying style still influence my tying today. It goes into great detail, yet keeps it simple enough to not have a hard time digesting the info.My main complaint with the book is that it should have had more color photos on a better quality paper, but overall I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to tie the beautiful classics.
No nonsense, straight-forward........2002-04-07
Let's face it, there's so much information about Tying Classic Salmon Flies that no one book could possibly cover every aspect of the subject. In fact, several volumes wouldn't be enough.
If you want a book that teaches you to tie, this is it. Mr. Alcott has done a fine job of selecting clear, practical information to include. Starting with a short history, this book progresses on to: materials, types of wings, proportions, and building classic featherwings. The book is well written and the information is presented in a straight forward, no nonsense style.
Will it make you an expert? I wish it were so - buidling classic salmon flies can't be learned soley out of a book. It will, however, give you a solid foundation and start you down the right path. It provides enough scope to keep you busy absorbing the information. I highly recommend it. Fine book Mr. Alcott; now where's the next book?
Interesting but unnecessary.......1999-08-15
This book adds nothing really new that has not been covered by Poul Jorgensen's classic book "Salmon Flies - their character, style and dressing" and unlike that book will never become a "classic" book. The only critiscm that I ever had of Jorgensen's book was that the illustrations were in black & white and lost some of the detail. Why "Building Classic Salmon Flies" did the same is a little puzzling in view of the great advances that have been made in colour printing and the few colour illustrations that there are in the book are of poor quality. I learnt absolutely nothing new from this book and in view of Ron Alcott's reputation I was somewhat disapointed. I would rate this book as a mildly interesting book for a library on Classic Salmon Flies; but unnecessary.

I found this book very easy to understand compared to similar technical books. Illustrations and details of tying techniques are excellent. I would recommend this book to anyone considering this sport.
excellent basics of flytying book for beginners and above........1997-04-27
After little formal training and some flytying kit manuals , I found Fling and Puterbaugh's manual. It was just what I needed to continue in my hobby. The authors' include thorough chapters on tools, work environments and materials. Nothing is assumed in this book. Although the sections on insect life cycles are just a brief overview, the specific patterns shown include excellent step by step drawings to walk even a 9 year old through with ease. This text has become my new fly tying instructor

Great Reference!.......2007-02-18
The lay out of this book is great. The chapters are broken down to demonstrate the different ways to tie different portions of the fly. For example, the different methods for tying on the hackle are given as well as different wing styles. The pictures help to clarify what each step entails. I find myself going back to this book numerous times and it is one of the most used books on my shelf.
Greatest Fly Tying Book.......2001-06-21
I have 4 tying books and have been interested in tying for years but as soon as I recieved this book I became addicted.I also have the CD-Rom of the same title and both are more helpful than any information I have gotten anywhere else.If you want to help someone start tying flies or already know how and just want to get better this is a must buy.The CD-Rom also has movies on every technique you would ever possibly need. Buy this book!!!!!
Fly Tying Cookbook.......2000-10-03
This book is great to see step by step how to tie flies. The pictures are well done. It is easy to see what is going on at each step. You can even determine lengths of materials from measuring against hook length. The book leaves very little to guessing. What you guess is really more of a show of creativity and style.
The best way to understand what fishes think before lunch.........1998-11-19
This is the second book on fly-tying I've read; all the things shown inside are really clear and also a child could tye a catching fly following the illustrations and the photos. Congratulations!
A Very Beautiful Book.......1998-09-11
In The Art of Fly Tying, fly fishermen find many ways to tie high-quality, well-crafted classical flies, and most popular fly patterns. The book itself is a work of art. All color pages full of beautifull photographs.
