Book Description

She never meant for it to happen. . . .

For Chicago Thomas, aka Windy, it was an offer too good to refuse: the chance to head the forensics lab at the Las Vegas Police Department. With her six-year-old daughter in tow, Windy moves to Sin City hoping to start over with a loving fiancé—far from the sad memories of a first marriage that ended in tragedy. But the job of her dreams is about to take a nightmarish turn.

She wanted to be a good girl. . . .

Though the first murders appear to be random, they are savage in their intensity: an entire family, butchered in their own home. Only a few days later, another family meets the same grisly fate. To Ash Leighton, the enigmatic chief of the Metro Violent Crime Unit, the signs are clear: a serial killer is stalking Las Vegas.

But she just couldn’t help herself. . . .

In a breathless race against time, the lines between good and bad, right and wrong, begin to blur, and Windy and Ash find themselves irresistibly drawn to each other. In a town where nothing is what it seems, only the evidence doesn't lie. And Windy may have to pay for the truth with her life. Sometimes being good is dangerous.

5 out of 5 stars Suspensful, edge of your seat, up all night entertainment!.......2005-04-05

"Bad Girl" incorporates the principles of personal and private self as Windy is shown both at home and with police work. Windy is a multi-demensional character that has the reader wishing to read more and more about the book.

The relationship between Windy and her fiance is an especially complicated one, she feels like she needs a safe relationship as she struggles to find her foothold in both work and in her personal life.

The both screams romance and mystery. It has a powerful woman who is so artfully crafted that she jumps off the pages. The hero is an enigma of sorts with layers hidden beneath his surface that the reader sees Windy uncover and the mystery keeps you guessing until the very end. There are twists and turns at every corner and it makes one wish to know what happens.

1 out of 5 stars Bad book, as in not good.......2005-03-22

This book was really bad. Maybe it should be retitled as Bad Book. It started off pretty good until the author decided to throw in one bad twist after another. In the end, the reader has a hard time keeping track of the characters and deciding for him/herself who the villain is, since the author does not provide any clues for the reader to interpret. I also found it beyond irritating for some of the characters to be grappling constantly throughout the book with the concept of "being good" or "being bad." What the heck does that mean anyways? Aaarggggg! Nobody has to be this "perfect" person unless that is what they want to achieve. I believe the author is trying to make some commentary on "perfect" people, that is really not very well welcomed when I am trying to read a mystery. I say each to his or her own, whatever makes you happy, so what and who cares. There are also major potholes in the plot that makes the story implausible, kind of like a bad CSI Las Vegas episode....

If you do not enjoy being manipulated to believe one thing and then be thrown a twist that doesn't make too much sense other than to manipulate the reader, do not read this book. May I suggest Janet Evanovich's mystery series instead. At least the stories are more plausible and it is a complete joy to read. I always feel ten times better after following Evanovich's main character's, Stephanie Plum's, funny escapdes. I felt like pulling out my hair when I finished reading Bad Girl, and especially with all the characters' neurotic thoughts, it put me in a really BAD mood.

Excellent book! I am now a Michele Jaffe fan for sure. The story grabbed you on the first page and didn't let go. Fast paced, just enough twists and surprises and a little romance thrown in for good measure. The story line was awesome and the CSI like investigation was interesting to read.

This was one of those books that made you feel like friends had left you when you turn the last page, I highly recommend this read.

5 out of 5 stars Bad girl? Great book!.......2004-09-24

Whew! What a ride! Adult readers who enjoy tight, multi-faceted mystery/thriller/suspense novels will relish this book by Michelle Jaffe.

Las Vegas police criminologist Chicago Thomas is obsessively drawn to solving the particularly gruesome serial murders of several families. Using her keen eye for crime scene detail and an uncanny inner sense, she gets a good jump on pursuing the criminal. But things are not always as they seem even for an incredibly talented criminologist like Thomas and she finds herself as as the hunter and hunted at the same time.

That short synopsis, however, does not tell the whole story. Jaffe has populated her story with many excellent characters and several compelling plotlines that simultaneously grip the reader until those lines converge in a tremendous deneouement at the end of the book. No loose ends are left untied. This is a masterful novel.

Beware, however, that there are some lurid details here that will disturb some sensitive readers. While Jaffe deftly avoids graphic sexual description until a disappointing scene near the end of the book, the gritty detail of murder and life on the seamy side can be disturbing.

Jaffe's writing skills are ver impressive. She has bettered conventional, boilerplate fiction by creating great characters (even minor characters are real) who live in the reader's memory and by spinning tale intricate and succinct at the same time. A true winner.

3 out of 5 stars You should never skip breakfast . . ........2004-04-28

As a rule, I absolutely hate it when I get halfway into a novel and it suddenly changes into something else. This one starts as a very good police procedural murder mystery -- but at almost exactly the midpoint, the author suddenly *tells* you whodunit, and it becomes a thriller instead. Chicago "Windy" Thomas is an almost excessively competent young woman who has just left her job as a sheriff in Virginia to run the forensics lab in Las Vegas. She's trying to track down a particularly gruesome serial killer who wipes out whole families (except for the fathers) and, of course, she becomes a target herself. She has a cute six-year-old daughter and a control-freak boyfriend, but she's also drawn to Ash Laughton, head of the Metro Violent Crime Unit -- who just happens to also be a computer-software-millionaire. (I'm told there are a lot of similarities between the set-up and a top TV series, but I've never seen it.) Jaffe generally does a good job with the characters, except that I find it hard to believe that Windy was ever able to pass the FBI's personality screens. The pace is breathless, the level of detail is almost clinical, and the ending somewhat redeems the plot giveaway.

2 out of 5 stars Far fetched in some parts.......2007-06-04

Albeit you'd never get into the book's story it'll keep you reading. But if for one person's whim can be a blackout and keep Vegas without water, I think that the State of Nevada has a very BIG problem as well as the whole country. If one simple woman thinks that she can do whatever she wants to Las Vegas's mob and get away with it... as it happened in the book... I think I better read Cinderella. It's more plausible.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad.......2007-04-04

I stayed interested enough in this book to finish it. However, it isn't a book I would save for a later reading like I do with some of my "keepers". It was a little hard to keep track of all the different characters. The book wasn't bad; it did keep me reading. I have to say though that a lot of the dialogue seemed excessive, childish and unreal, as if everyone were just thinking out loud. Many of the characters weren't developed enough for me to fully comprehend what they were really like.

4 out of 5 stars The Vegas Series: Vegas Heat.......2004-11-06

Fanny Thornton, a.k.a. Mrs. Las Vegas, has inherited all her money from ex-husband Ash's mother. Fanny now controls all of Las Vegas including the newly built casino, Babylon, which her ex runs. But she's not happy. Dating Ash's brother, Simon, is a little too close to family for her likes but after marrying him she finds out she knows nothing about the evil person he's become. "Who are you, Simon? More to the point, what are you?" She comes to find out that she knows very little about her husband. That everything he has said or done has been a lie. During a family emergency she is forced to take over and run Babylon. Vegas Heat by Fern Michaels is about Fanny's struggles to find out what true happiness is.
Fanny is a kind compassionate woman who gave herself completely to her children. Until she realized she wasn't being honest, she never thought about herself. At times she is too much of a make believe character by always sacrificing herself for others. She's always getting into trouble that ends up being solved only to start a new conflict. The money doesn't over power her yet it makes you angry that she keeps most of it to herself and rarely spends it on cause worthy events. She's a bit too calm and normal when things get out of control and manages to cry in almost every chapter.
Ash Thornton has reversed 180 degrees since the first book in this trilogy. He's loving, caring, and joyous. You have to wonder if it is just an act he is putting on to get at the Thornton money. "Ash must have an ulterior motive then. He never does anything without a reason." No one can believe that this man has changed for the better. It does seem unreal that he could change from being a greedy mad at life man to a loving babysitter for his young grandson with such ease. Fern Michaels should have made the transition smoother instead of snapping her fingers to give him a change.
This book is about romance, happiness, and overcoming difficulties. The theme of this book is you can always overcome difficulties. The book has too many obstacles for the main character to jump over. It is like a yearlong soap opera crammed into 400 some pages.
Older women with kids will appreciate this book because they can relate to Fanny. They can relate to the obstacles she's been through. Women can relate to their kids not needing them anymore and the tragedies of marriage. Yet no woman will be able to relate to every single drama that happens.
Fern Michaels' style is to create drama. She creates happily ever after endings for her books. There is always a new drama to be conquered that usually results in another one forming. Vegas Heat catches your attention and constantly changes your feelings while keeping you interested. It's an easy read for those who like long descriptive novels.
It captures your interest but loses it's grip as every new drama happens. Yet you wonder every time, how are they going to get out of this one? If you like novels that never come to a point but make an easy relaxing read, you should pick up a copy of this book by best selling author Fern Michaels.

2 out of 5 stars Trying to be too many things in one book.......2003-08-13

I read this book prior to reading any of the reviews; and I have to say that I agree with the editorial review. The author tried to put in too many things without developing the characters. There is one chapter that feels like it was misplaced, right in the middle of two consecutive chapters because it could not have happened in the time frame that was discussed. It didn't even make sense that the author put in this particular chapter in the first place. I almost feel that the other readers fell in love with other book(s) written by Ms. Michael, and were just happy to have another book!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful book!.......1998-06-28

Another wonderful one by Fern Michaels. Can't decide which is the best, the Vegas series or the Texas series. They are all so good, I just love them. As usual the writing was superb!!

5 out of 5 stars Cupid with a difference.......2006-03-02

Even Greek deities must progress with the times to discharge their divine duties, as Eros and his wife Psyche discover in Las Vegas ala Sin City. Hence, the birth of Cupid, Inc, an agency that ostensibly matches clients to their sex fantasies but in reality tries to help them find true love. Throw in a meddling Aphrodite who thinks she knows better how love matches should be arranged, a sharp-tongued nymph and a couple other idiosyncratic Greek gods and goddesses and you know this story is going to be a delightful light-hearted romp.

Revolving around the agency, the 4 short erotic love stories in this collection feature lots of comic relief, barbed banters, likeable characters and hot, steamy sex. It's a sheer pleasure to read, like a piece of lemon cake you can still taste on your tongue long after you've devoured it. Suspend your disbelief and let the games begin...

The Accountant and the Virgin - Sara knows she couldn't have the boss she's had a crush on so she settled for the next best thing -- purchase an office fantasy to lose her virginity. A wrong address leads to her meeting Nic the accountant and a very satisfying encounter in his office...

The Stars in Her Eyes - Jamie is thrilled to have won Cupid, Inc's contest for a date with movie star Kevan Rune. Kevan agreed to be the prize of the contest as a personal favor and expects his date to be a simpering, starry-eyed female. Will the night end at just wine and dine or turn into something more?

One Mile Up...A Little to the Left - Life has never been better. Karee, associate editor for Love Magazine, gets to act out her fantasy of hot sex with a handsome man on a luxury airliner all in the name of her job. What she doesn't know is her assigned fantasy partner, Bret, is the managing editor of rival Max-Out Magazine, who also plans to write an article about the experience...

The Spy Who Rubbed Me - Badgered by his mother, retired jewel thief Paul agrees to participate in a spy fantasy arranged by Cupid, Inc. His partner in the mission to `steal' Aphrodite's golden apple is Helen, a waitress who's bored with her life. It was all supposed to be just an exciting game. They didn't expect to have to contend for the apple with a very real Greek goddess...

Cupid Inc

It's the 21st century and Cupid doesn't go around shooting people with arrows anymore. No, today he is an enlighted god, and with help from his wife Pysche, caters to the various fantasies of those willing to take a chance and explore the sexual side of themselves. Along with Aphrodite, who tends to interfere with her own good intentions, Eros and Pysche have made it their earthly mission to bring people together in love. And if the couples get to live out a fantasy or two, well, that's icing on the cake.

"The Accountant and the Virgin"
Who knew accountants could be so sexy? Certainly not virginal Sara Beaumont, who was in for a surprise when the "sex in the office" fantasy she's been harboring turns in to a reality. In love with her boss Zeth, who doesn't take notice of her, Sara can't stop fantasizing about having sex on an office desk. Deciding to make her fantasy come true and get rid of her virginity, Sara contacts "Cupid, Inc" to make it happen. Only instead of sending her to a man with a similar fantasy, Sara is accidentally sent to the office of Nic Anderson, the new accountant for "Cupid, Inc". Nic is immediately attracted to Sara, and more than willing to make her fantasy come true. But what happens when Sara's boss Zeth is pointed in Sara's direction? Will the magic she feels with Nic pale in comparison to the attention of her boss?

"The Stars in her Eyes"
Vegas wedding planner Janie Brown is trying to keep her business afloat in the wedding capital of the U.S. She doesn't have time to date. But thanks to her well-meaning sister, Janie has won a date with hot movie star Kevan Rune, who has reluctantly agreed to the date as a favor to Eros. Hounded by a sleazy tabloid reporter, Kevan is immensely grateful when a woman in a silver dress comes to his rescue, only to find out it's his date. They have a wonderful time together, and the attraction is instant and intense. But both have been burned before - Janie by a philandering spouse and Kevan by a publicity-hungry girlfriend. Will a stalking tabloid reporter ruin their chance for happiness? Not if love has anything to do with it....

"One Mile Up...A Little to the Left"
Karee Lomen is a journalist for "Love", a magazine for women and all things about, well, love and romance. The thing is, she has had this recurring fantasy about the mile-high club ever since she had a bit of an adventure on a plane as a teenager. Her friend and boss Veronica gives Karee the ticket, er, chance to make that fantasy come true with a little help from Cupid Inc. The only catch is she has to write an article about the experience for the magazine, which she will gladly do for "Love". The night before her pleasure trip, she attends a party for the arts at the Bellagio hotel, and meets a man who sparks her interest, only he disappears before she can get to know him better. It isn't until later that she finds out he's Bret Jernigan, is a fellow journalist for Max-Out, a men's magazine who laughs at all that "Love" stands for. But by now she's already fulfilled her fantasy, with Bret, and is falling for him. Now Karee and Bret have to decide which is more important: their relationship or their careers..... Readers will get a kick out of the antics of Bret's boss Max, who's attention-getting schemes seem to be geared towards getting a reaction out of Karee's boss Veronica. I'm interested in finding out where that may lead....

"The Spy that Rubbed Me"
Helen Manzana is a waitress bored with the repetiveness of her life. She dreams about an adventure from one of her favorite James Bond movies. One day a regular customer leaves Helen a very generous tip, and a gift certificate for a spy fantasy from Cupid, Inc. Days later, Helen's normal day is interrupted when a dishy man in a tuxedo and an English accent begs for her help. And so starts the beginning of Helen's fantasy.... Paul Aris is a reformed thief and current do-gooder determined to stay on the straight and narrow. But even he can't refuse his mother when she asks him to steal a valuable item from the Troy Casino - all in the name of love and adventure. Determined to make his mother happy, he plays along with the spy fantasy, and in the process meets a woman who gets his blood pumping just by being in the same room.

"Cupid, Inc" is a lot about fantasies, but mostly the journey is about love, and matching two people who belong together. I like the whole mythology premise, and the way Michele Bardsley has set it up for the possibility of future stories. I hope she's planning a follow-up book - I think there are a lot of fantasies left to be fulfilled. This collection of stories was quick and delightful - perfect for a lazy afternoon to ward off the winter chill and warm your heart.

Read all three books in this series and was very happy with the story. Fran is an excellent writer.

5 out of 5 stars totally engrossing.......2006-03-27

You will find this book hard to put down. Interesting characters, good storyline. The book is intelligently written and has great depth.

4 out of 5 stars More fun than Oprah.......2000-09-27

After reading some of the heavy-duty-mind-expanding-womanly books a la Oprah, I needed some mental reading relief. My mother gave me this book and said, " Read something without thinking about it!" So I did and my mind was freed and I am now ready to start Vegas Heat! Map of the World will have to wait!

4 out of 5 stars Another family saga -- with the Colemans?.......1999-12-29

I'll admit it -- I was suckered into getting VEGAS RICH because of the name Coleman. I thought to myself, "Is Fern Michaels creating an alternate history for the Coleman family, this time in Vegas?" I was half right -- there are Colemans involved, but not the ones I thought I would see from her TEXAS series. No, this deals with Sallie Coleman, Seth Coleman's younger sister, and her quest to make something of herself, thanks to the kindness of one of her clients -- Sallie's a prostitute, you see, in the early 1920s in the small and dusty town of Las Vegas. It's an interesting premise and I'll give credit to Michaels for creating Sallie's story and where her life goes from there. Had I never read her TEXAS series, I might have been completely drawn in...but I'm not. Michaels starts to occasionally drop in "crossovers" with the Colemans of Texas, and it's there I have the problem. Suddenly, Agnes Ames (Billie Ames Coleman's mother), companion to the callous Seth Coleman, has a heart! Billie Coleman flies out to see Fanny Coleman (Sallie's daughter-in-law) frequently! Sallie helps out Coleman Enterprises with her money! These intersections with the TEXAS characters don't pan out in terms of complimenting the TEXAS novels in the continuity department -- and for me, that's a glaring error. Those problems aside, it's a fair first novel for Michaels in her new series. If you like family sagas and Fern Michaels, you'll be content.

5 out of 5 stars A Great, Entertaining and Fast Read.......1998-10-30

I really enjoyed reading this first in the series of three family saga books. Fern Michaels does an excellent job of pulling you into the story. It's nearly impossible to put this book down...it is packed with new dilemmas, and you can't wait to see how they turn out. I just started the second in the series, and I know I will have to read all three so I know the lives of all of these characters will turn out OK. Finally, the writing style is very easy (but interesting) to read, so you move along quickly.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Rockin divas!!.......2004-03-08

This is a real groovy good read; about two girls Jamie and Izzy who go to Las Vegas in search of husbands to wed.
Izzy's the wild one, getting involved with Lars (the stripper), and the elvis presly impersonator, and then finally Reed Mahoney (the tubby businessman), whom she gets married to. Jamie's the one with all the crushes, first CJ/christian, Zane, and Finn. But my favourite characters in the book definitely are Christian and Scott. Christian reminds me of the boy-next-door with gorgeous green eyes and the oh-so-preppy-but-sexy-at-the-same-time look. Jones really had me going with her vivid description of Christian and Scott (brad pitt, anyone?). I felt for Jamie as she got crushed by CJ(the young christian)and Zane. Jones keeps making the readers guess who Jamie's new beau would be, going round and round about christian, who seemingly pines for Jamie as he prepares getting married to Nadine, only for Nadine to reveal a shocking revalation towards the end of the book.
This book is typically not your average preppy romance book where there only revolves around 2 people, but every other character. Two thumbs up for Jones; keep the good books rolling in!!

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2003-07-18

This is a great book; extremely funny with great characters. You will love Jamie and her pals as they explore Las Vegas and hit the big-time. A really excellent, beach novel - if you like British "Chick-Lit" you will not be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Behind the Glitz and Glamour.......2006-07-25

Beyond the Glimmering Lights is a very unique book that takes a look into the segregated past of Las Vegas. Author Trish Geran shows through the experiences of her Aunt Magnolia that there is more to Las Vegas than the bright lights. A wonderful read that show the perseverance of the African American community. Through the brilliant efforts of celebrities such as Sammy Davis Jr., Josephine Baker and the general community they were able to tear down the racial boundaries and helped shape America's playground.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting and insightful.......2006-07-10

I just finished reading Beyond the Glimmering Lights: The Pride And Perseverance of African americans in Las Vegas.

Using memories of her Aunt Magnolia for structure, Ms. Geran paints a vivid picture of what it was like to be African American in Las Vegas between the periods of 1940s and the 1960s.

As a fairly recent newbie to Las Vegas, this book provided a very interesting and insightful look at the history of African Americans in the area and the role they played in the shaping of an intergrated Las Vegas.

It is a very easy read and I highly recommend it :)

I eagerly await the next book by Trish Geran.

4 out of 5 stars lots of cool quicktime VR.......2003-03-03

This CD lets you see a lot of Las Vegas in the cool Quicktime VR format. You can take a 'virtual tour' and get a good idea about how to plan a trip to Vegas, and see a variety of perspectives on the action!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2003-01-26

I got the CD for Chirstmas and thought that it was a great CD. It was fun and bought back some cool memories. I would recommend this CD if you love Vegas.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Tour.......2002-12-19

I bought this CD sometime ago and thought that it was a great resource for my family. If you are ever going to go to Las Vegas you should see this CD. It really helped us grasp a very confusing and overwhelming town.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!!.......2002-12-09

Save your money. This virtual reality program of Vegas is just some virtual junk. First of all, the program doesn't come with instructions or even an installation application. It took me 30 minutes to figure out how to start the program and when I did, I was greatly disappointed. The program did have some nice picures of Las Vegas, but [price] for a collection of pictures that you can rotate and zoom in and out on, is a bit much.
