Customer Reviews:
Not my favorite style of blues.......2007-09-15
There are many styles of acoustic blues. If you are going to invest the time needed to learn to play, you must find the style that most touches your soul. For me, this set of book and cd isn't the one.
Try Happy Traum's 2 dvd set "Easy Steps to Acoustic Blues Guitar", way better in my opinion, and more soulful blues. The 2nd dvd by Traum in this set is a masterfull teaching of fingerpicking, whereas the first is more on strumming patterns and learning the basic form. I recommend both, but if it is only fingerpicking you want, get #2 by itself.
Happy Traum is a great teacher...the best I've encountered for home study.
Also try his dvd "The Blues Bag" for 11 blues songs in varied styles.
Relatively user friendly: better than most!.......2007-01-28
I have tried MANY self-teach finger picking books - this one is amongst the best. Clear explanations, deliberately staged lessons, a useful CD and, perhaps most important of all, a tone of respect for the old flat picker who wants to learn how to use his fingers. In a couple of hours, I was on my way to being able play the way I have wanted to for many years.
Good practice book.......2006-11-07
Helpful book for widening your repetoire, for beginner-intermediate level. CD is helpful for hearing more advanced songs.
A great start for a Blues Fan!.......2006-10-15
I just got this one a few weeks ago and I have to say that I like it! If you are just starting out, know your basic open position and C & F barre chords, and would like to learn some Fingerstyle Blues, this is the book. It takes you from the absolute beginning up thru 5 tunes that represent various Blues styles.
I would place this book just a little below the Mark Hanson books only because it is focusing on one style, Blues, and it only uses a few patterns. BUT, it uses these patterns to great effect, so don't let that throw you off. As for the quality of the lessons, I would place them up with Mark's. They are easy to follow and are paced well. I feel that anyone that has a desire to learn this style, and practice, will be playing the Blues in no time!
You will learn some great exercises in the keys of A, E, and G, along with technics like Hammer-Ons and Pull-Offs, Brushstrokes, Vamps, Heel Damping, how to practice a steady Alternating Bass, tips on how to Sing the blues, and more. The TAB is clear and easy to read. I have the 8 1/2"x11 book, and have seen the A4 size one, and both have clear and easy to read print. The 5 tunes you will be able to play at the end of the book, "M&O Blues", "Beekman Blues", "Big Road Blues", "32-20 Blues", and "Black Rat Swing" are, besides fun to play, great tunes to add to your list of songs.
Some other reviews state that Mark, the teacher, rambles on and on, and as a matter of fact he does. But to me it sounds like what you would hear if you sat down with a friend, or someone who was explaining things from the ground up, and that is what this book is about. So it don't really bother me that much.
What does bother me are the following. First not every exercise it on the CD, and what is on the CD is at performance speed. There is no slow & fast demos of the exercises. Second, Mark goes off on his own "improvising" that stray from the TAB in someplaces. Not real bad, I am talking about adding a note here and there, not changing a whole passage. But still for a beginner, which is what this book is aimed at, it would throw them off. And third, his guitar is out of tune on about 1/4 of the demonstrations, and that is kind of distracting.
But even with that, I will recommend this book to those who are just starting out learning Fingerstyle guitar, especially if they like the Blues. Find it with the CD or Tape, and get the Blues! But the Mark Hanson book "The Art of Contemporary Travis Picking" would still be my first choice for people who want a more rounded approach to Fingerstyle playing
Great Materials for Learning Fingerstyle Blues.......2006-08-11
The title 'Beginning Fingerstyle Blues Guitar' does not mean the materials in the book are all elementary, or the materials are targeted for the absolute beginner. In fact, the tunes at the end are not at all 'beginner's tunes'. An experienced flatpicker will find this book a good place to start for learning fingerstyle blues guitar. Such a guitarist, with patience, should be able to start from the middle of the book, for a quick taste of the joy of playing this relatively simple and yet extremely expressive blues guitar style. Highly recommended.

Solid Instruction.......2007-08-15
I bought this for my niece to learn the Blues and she loves it. Practice and learning skill sets is so important. I would also like to recommend for the Blues Guitarist a new great DVD that we use at our house all the time, "I Am The... Blues Lead Guitarist" I Am The... Blues Lead Guitarist once you can play some get this and enjoy playing with a real band in their jam sessions, this will make you a great player.
Book with good lessons.......2007-07-11
I originally skipped the lessons in this book, in favor of just playing all of the tabbed out studies. Big mistake! The lessons are very well graded, and move at a comfortable pace (the studies kind of throw you in to the thick of things, a bit overwhelming for a beginner). As a teacher, I have used this book to help students out with their technique, performance, and theory.
The actual blues that it does teach is very much on the cliche side of things, but the lessons will have a universal appeal towards other types of music, especially as far as the theory goes. Because of this I have to grade this book with 5 stars, because it is really one of the best in this regard, and with a good mix of learning and playing, it is a great choice for learning and understanding the guitar.
Daniel Page, Guitar Instruction
Great book for learning to play guitar and blues.......2007-05-31
This book is recommended by teachers and advanced guitar players for learning blues although it also allows to improve general aspects not only related to the blues. It is a good way to understand the basics of blues and some of its styles. Some previous knowledge and experience are needed but the book can be followed by beginners.
Each chapter is divided into three parts. Part one is dedicated to scales. Minor and major pentatonic scales are described and studied. Part two shows how to play chords and progressions and to apply them to blues and other songs. Part three is a study or song in which the author introduces techniques as bending, sliding, and so on. The studies are given in musical notation and also tablature.
An advantage of this book is that the author, John Ganapes, answers some questions in his own web and also gives some tips on how to practice and how to play the studies. The learning can be continued with More Blues You Can Use or Jazzin' the Blues by the same author.
Stellar learnings on blues rock!.......2007-05-14
I have only been playing guitar for about a year so am still entry level. I knew the major chords and some others before picking up this great book. I would say it is NOT a raw beginner's book as others have said but it is an entry-level book for those who have at least tinkered with the guitar for a couple of months. The content is very easy to comprehend and simply takes some practice to master. It is laid out perfectly and the instructions couldn't be more straight forward...just do what Mr. Ganapes says and you'll be on your way! This is definitely a blues rock course though and not traditional acoustic blues. I play it on my acoustic (as well as the electric) and it sounds great, but not traditional. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in playing blues rock music on guitar!
Good Workbook.......2007-05-12
This is a good workbook for an advanced beginning guitar student. It's not for the pure beginner. Anyone just starting should learn the basics first: open position chords, bar chords, scales, etc. before they crack open this book.
As you can imagine the book starts off pretty easy with some simple rhythms and chords. It introduces different scales along the way and said scales are then used in the sample tracks on the accompanying CD. Some of the exercises are very easy. Those towards the end of the book are much more difficult.
There is not much in this book about chords. Most teaches and provides exercises for picking. The student will learn various scales, alternate picking, string bending, slides, shifts among other fundamentals. After having worked through this book, the student will have developed the skills necessary to do some awesome blues soloing.

Acoustic Masters Series: Bob Brozman's Bottleneck Blues Guitar.......2007-02-21
I have been playing for over 30 years, this is the best book on Bottleneck blues guitar. It is also alot of fun to play.
Very good place to start.......2003-11-09
I'm an intermediate player who bought 3 books to learn slide from.
This is the best of the bunch. The book covers a lot of ground but
the basics are here as well. Well spaced info and a good CD to
learn from. Other good books on blues (but not slide per se) are the Kenny Sultan series - they are not as hard as the Grossman and Mann books
Worth the $.......2002-08-13
I'm a metal guitarist (the real stuff, Maiden, Morbid Angel, Slayer style metal) that dabbles in jazz and fingerstyle.
I've loved Robert Johnson's country style blues forever and this book introduced me to the joys of playing slide guitar in open G in just two days! I can already play enough stuff to sound like I know what I'm doing.
Virtuoso slide instruction.......2000-08-23
Bob Brozman, in addition to being a certified ethnomusicologist and world expert on the National resonator guitar has compiled a mother lode of slide and rhythm techniques in the Country Blues style.Although at his own admission Brozman doesn't "play Robert Johnson like Robert Johnson.." in recordings or live venues he does easily teach the style of Johnson flawlessly in rhythm, phrase and slide technique. In addition he quotes and instructs from the other Country Blues giants..Charlie Patton, Willie Brown as well as including his own trademark licks. The rhythmic instruction included is essential learning for this style. Included CD is excellent in detail and example. A must have for anyone interested in this style

Overall, a Great Collection..........2006-01-30
The Complete Country Blues Guitar Book has tabs for a wide variety of blues styles, including Delta, Rag, Texas, and bottleneck. The one point that keeps me from rating it 5 stars is the CDs, one of which was defective. I contacted Mel Bay Publishing by e-mail, advised them of the problem, and they promptly sent me a replacement along with a nice apology. That issue aside, I am very pleased with the overall collection. Get this if blues is your thang...
Excellent.......2003-09-04
I haven't played guitar for about ten years, and got this book to get myself back into it. It's great, I can't put it down, and I'm actually learning the pieces!
Defintely recommended, but not for a complete beginner.
A Treasury of Country Blues Guitar Styles.......2003-07-29
Stefan Grossman has been the world authority on fingerstyle blues guitar for decades now, and this book is the biggest compendium of his work as an educator. He tabs out fifty-seven (fifty-seven!) songs in a variety of styles and tunings, enough to keep any student busy for a year or more.
This isn't so much a method book--though I taught myself to play country blues from it--as a large tab compendium with helpful tips about each song. Each song has at least one fully-transcribed verse. Many have intros and outros, and some are complete arrangements. Most of the book covers the alternating bass and ragtime traditions of the Memphis and Piedmont blues, but there are seven Delta tunes, and excellent seven-song chapter on Texas blues, and even a good number of bottleneck tunes. Most of the songs are old standards ("Crow Jane","Vestapol","Hard Time Killin' Floor") taken from the original recordings by artists like Reverend Gary Davis, Mance Liscomb, and Blind Blake.
The "handwritten" tab is large and easy to read--you'll never be able to go back to that tiny Hal Leonard/Guitar Player tab after this. There are lots of photos of old bluesmen as well as atmospheric old-South pictures from the Library of Congress collection. It's so attractive I keep it on my coffee table. The CDs feature Grossman playing the tabbed arrangements (and then some) as well as original Blind Lemon Jefferson tracks. They're listenable in their own right, even if you aren't learning the guitar!
If you're interested in pre-war blues guitar, and you already known how to play five or six chords (remember, this book teaches country blues, not guitar), this is easily the best bang for your music buying buck.

Motown .......2007-08-13
My husband is love with this bass gautairist, and love this book and DVD combo.
An absolute must for any aspiring bassist.......2007-08-01
First off, this book does an excellent job describing his life and sounds, from "he began playing a double bass" to "he would have the bass all the way up, and the treble half way." This book knows you want to sound like Jamerson, and it tells you just how to do that. What makes the book invaluable are the transcriptions. 49 of Jamerson's songs transcribed for you to play, right there and be able to get the idea of what he was thinking and trying to give when he wrote the basslines.
A book for any bassist.
Amazing!!! It's ALL that!!.......2007-05-04
Thorough, well-researched biography of James Jamerson - the man who changed how musicians view the bass. What an amazing life and a tragic end for a musician of immense talent.
Warning - the section of tunes in the back of this book will make you want to burn your bass!! He was THAT good.
Can't really write more - gotta go practice.... That's how much this book will inspire you to go play. A MUST HAVE for your bass library.

Blues You Can Use (Blues You Can Use)
ASIN: 0793595878 |
Book Description
Now you can add authentic blues feel and flavor to your playing! Here are 101 definitive licks - plus a demonstration CD - from every major blues guitar style, neatly organized into easy-to-use categories. They're all here, including Delta blues, jump blues, country blues, Memphis blues, Texas blues, West Coast blues, Chicago blues, and British blues.
Customer Reviews:
Fine presentation.......2007-01-18
This book covers the many styles of blues very well. The TAB transcriptions are perfect. Some of the licks are a little difficult, but if it were easy, we'd all be blues masters. The CD helps a lot in getting the feel of each of the licks. This book may not be for beginners, but intermediate guitarists will learn things right away.
Blues u can lose.......2007-01-13
I found this book to be worthless. Buy Blues you can use or Blues by the bar which are both great books for learning how to play the blues. Skip this one as it is a complete waste of time an money.
Great book........2006-07-05
I just got this book a couple of days ago in the mail. Before I got this book i was very limited on soloing but this book has helped me so much.
The book has many different styeles of blues with a little backround for each style. Most of the licks arent really hard but there are some challenging ones. Its just a great book and it is affordable. I garentee that you with be a better guitar player after using this book.
Gotta Love The Tones.......2006-05-25
This is a real fine collection of licks. What I like most about the book is the discussion of the styles represented and his description the gear he uses to get an authentic sound for the style or period. Great tones! My only suggestion for improvement would be to have fewer tempo and key changes, at least within the same chapter. I think it would help in the learning process. Not a big deal though. A dedicated student should transpose and otherwise figure out how to incorporate the licks that sing to him or her into a personal style. Well worth the money.
short but inspiring licks.......2006-05-24
I agree with several reviewers that the licks here are often brief, and many of them repeat certain shapes, but hey, that's the blues. And as Marshall says in his introduction, once you know the basic chord progression implied by the lick (and they are stated), one can write a context for the riff,
or can join one lick to others in the book with some transposition. My highest marks go to the playing and sound of the guitars used by Marshall. This is a very interesting historical review of blues styles, as well as being a pretty good teaching tool, too.

Customer Reviews:
a great book for blues fundamentals.......2007-03-23
I am a beginning guitar player and this book has been a tremendous help. This is a book that you will use a little at first then return to it over time. For me some of the chord shapes are still a little difficult so what I often do is use my chord book (ISBN 0947183094) to find easier versions of the chords.
Also I just wanted to say that the thing that makes this book so valuable is the fact that after you learn one of the lessons you will find that you are now armed with a technique that allows you to play many different songs for example: the riff to good morning little school girl is in the book. After I got fairly comfortable with that I found that I could play born under a bad sign, sunshine of your love etc. there are many songs that use that same combination of notes just varied in timing and order a little. That seems to be the case with chord progressions as well. If you are a beginner like me, remember to play chords that are easy at first then progressively try to play the more difficult ones. Eventually you will be able to play the same chords the pros use. Also as a beginner you probably use open chords. You won't really see how the chords work until you use bar chords so start incorporating those into your playing. I would recommend the F bar chord and the B minor bar chord as there are really no good open chord versions of those. Also learn the A D E bar chord combination at the 5th and 7th frets.
I used to think that the more guitar books I owned the better guitarist I will be. That has not proven to be true. I probably have 30 or so guitar books on the shelf and of those 30 I only use maybe 5, one of which is this 12 bar blues book, the other being Progressive guitar chords.
excellent intro to the blues.......2006-09-18
Excellent book introducing the fundamentals of blues chords and basic progressions. The book has progressions in different keys for a variety of styles: slow 12/8 blues, swing, boogie, jazzy type blues, minor blues, and riff blues. Really gets you into playing all over the neck, as most examples are moveable chords. In addition, the explainations are great, pointing out info on the sounds and tonality of the different chords, and some advice on getting a good sound, and what blues songs are based on the progressions.
There are also sections including some generic but cool turnarounds and intros, and a piece about soloing.
You'll be well on the way to having some smoking cool blues chops after you work your way through this book. If you're just starting out with guitar, blues is a good place to start, being the basis of most modern rock. If you already play, its still a good book to learn a ton of 12 bar blues styles.
Great Riff Building.......2004-02-05
If you want to play in a blues band, you better know these riffs. I would say memorize this book so you can play it in your sleep. There isn't alot of fancy stuff in here, but it is the foundation you need.
Before I ran into this book as well as a teacher who taught me similar stuff, I had been playing for years and thought I was pretty good - but I always fell apart when I tried to play with others. That's because I did not have these basic building blocks.

A Great Repertoire, Waiting to Be Learned.......2001-11-20
This book contains, in tablature and standard notation, songs by a number of great Delta bluesmen -- Charley Patton, Son House, Robert Johnson, Willie Brown, Skip James and others. Grossman does not in every case write out the notation for the entire song; a song might be represented by its intro, first verse and closing guitar lick, or maybe just by an extended break. In each case, Grossman gives you enough information that you can sit down with the recording and learn to play these classic songs.
Interview snippets, history and photographs add great color and texture to an extremely useful work.
Delta Blues.......2000-10-08
Just a beauty of a book. A sampling of classic delta bluesmen with their songs and tablature. Many are quoted, shedding light on personalities and the time and place in which they lived. A great book to purchase if you want to explore the genre.

Nice Learning Tool.......2007-08-15
I bought this for my niece to learn the Blues and she loves it. Practice and learning skill sets is so important. I would also like to recommend for the Blues Guitarist a new great DVD that we use at our house all the time, "I Am The... Blues Lead Guitarist" I Am The... Blues Lead Guitarist once you can play some get this and enjoy playing with a real band in their jam sessions, this will make you a great player.
Can't Quite Recommend.......2006-04-15
This is a pretty good extension to John Ganapes first tutorial on the Blues, "Blues You Can Use". The songs are interesting and, as does the first book in the series, it contains well thought-out instruction on playing the Blues. However, it has a serious drawback. There are no backing tracks for songs on CD. Also, since it does not provide the tempo (in beats per minute), one has to spend valuable practice time building one's own backing tracks (unless you have your own band handy). The book claims one can adjust the channel selection in order to hear only the rythm guitar. I did not find this to work very well. These days, there are plenty of tutuorials that include backing tracks, as part of the package. For this reason, I cannot quite recommend it.
Worthy Companion to "Blues You Can Use".......2006-01-11
If you're a beginning/intermediate electric guitar player, going through this book and it's easier companion "Blues You Can Use" is the quickest way to learn the instrument. In many artists' compilation CDs, you'll see "Essential such and such", well there are essential topics that needs to be covered in electric guitar playing too, and these two books does a pretty good job covering the essentials of guitar playing. Spend a year working on these two books (the two books combined will give you about 50 songs to practice), and you'll be playing most styles with inpunity with the steady increase in speed gained here. Now consider that compared to spending few fruitless years with a guitar instructor, you'll see what I mean. Each song is written to illustrate specific structure or a technique and you'll be learning tons of information as you go along. These two books are the most economic way to master the essentials of electric guitar playing both money and time wise. Some people may not like the style of blues guitar presented in this book as it's bit of blues/rock style mixed in, but to get the basics down I can't recommend a better set of books.
Blues you certainly can't use.......2006-01-11
I actually thought I wanted this book/cd combo... the reviews were really good, I love playing blues and I thought this might add something to my playing. It most decidedly didn't. The style that the author's partial to is fill up every bar with licks. Licks are good on their own terms, but when it comes to blues... you need to breathe.. not ramble. The author doesn't breathe, his phrasing is terrible, his chord changes are trite and he doesn't play off the other instruments - sure, he's got two guitar parts dubbed, but with some thought he could have played along with himself, not *over* himself.
Another thing that bothered me is that the description for this product says there's 23 full band tracks... not true, there's 21... and they're short, ranging from 51 seconds to 2 and a half minutes. There's barely enough for eight bars - I'd hit repeat to make the tracks last longer, but the author insists on speaking before each of his 'songs'.
This book is for absolute beginners, any intermediate blues player would be better off looking to another series if they want some decent instruction. Even better, just go listen to some decent players (like albert king) and play along... don't waste your money on this.
More Advanced Than "Blues You Can Use".......2005-08-27
This book picks up where "Blues you can use" left off. The lessons and exercises are significantly more advanced and produce a much more professional grade blues vibe in my opinion. Check out how the beginner book "blues you can use" has a lot more reviews than this one since not as many people make it this far. I worked my way through John Ganapes' first book over the course of a year and am really glad I got this one. For me The Blues is a journey and the "blues you can use" series has really helped me along the way. After buying over a dozen of these blues lesson books I've found John Ganapes' are far and away the best...but then again everybody has different tastes and abilities. If you consider yourself an advanced beginner or even an intermediate blues guitarist, you owe this book to yourself.

These turnarounds are okay.......2007-05-12
I've seen others that this book doesn't have on youtube and other websites, and they show you the fingers doing it as well, but this is still a help to someone trying to develop a blues style. I recommend it.
blues turnarounds turning thinkgs around.......2007-03-19
This is a great resource for guitar players wanting to build a solid foundation for the blues. Not the best for beginners, these exercises are more for the intermediate musician who wants to polish their skills and to learn some traditional tricks of the trade. the other books in this series are equally as great. the cd's are very useful because you get the big picture from hearing the back up tracks.
Exactly what it says it is.......2006-08-17
If your blues lick vocabulary needs some punctuation work, as in the punctuation at the end of bar 12 of the blues, this book has you covered. A nice collection of licks that contain that satisfying resolition back the I chord.
Must have for Blues guitar palyer.......2006-03-19
Excellant book. A Blues guitar player must know a good number of blues turnarounds and there are over 70 of them here presented nicely all in this book. What I like about this book it just cover blues turnarounds and does not cover alot of topics which always end up confusing me. This will you show you some of the best turnarounds it even has a minor blues turnaround. These are two bar phrases. I'm glad they are easy to memorize. I'm plugging these in my blues progressions right away.
