With her storytelling abilities in full force, Nora Roberts goes Hollywood in this contemporary romantic suspense. Ever since Julia Summers became a single mother at 18, she's focused all her energies on creating a secure home for her 10-year-old son, Brandon, and establishing herself as a sought-after biographer of Hollywood stars. Now quintessential movie goddess Eve Benedict, whose 50-year career has included two Oscars, four husbands, and scores of lovers, has particularly sought out Julia to write Eve's ultimate tell-all book. But as Eve reveals to Julia her many long-held secrets, Julia realizes there's a whole cast of characters with good reasons to keep Eve silent, including Eve's well-loved stepson, Paul Winthrop, a handsome novelist whose desire for Julia is beginning to penetrate her wary reserve. Eve, still glamorous, desirable, and reckless, thinks she's set the stage for events she can direct, but more and more, it's clear that someone dangerous is out of control. Fast paced, with a good balance between suspense and romance, and with more heart than many Hollywood-set novels. --Ellen Edwards
Book Description
A book to die for...
Eve Benedict is the last of the movie goddesses, a smoky-voiced sex symbol with two Oscars, four ex-husbands, and a legion of lovers to her name. There is no secret, no scandal she doesn't know. Now Eve has decided to write her memoirs--no holds barred. All Hollywood begs her not to. But Eve has her reasons....
Julia Summers is the biographer Eve has handpicked to tell her story. Transported from her quiet life in Connecticut to glitzy Beverly Hills, Julia hates the limelight but loves her work--and the home it built for the ten-year-old son she's raising alone. How can she refuse this chance of a lifetime?
But Eve's elegantly sexy stepson, Paul Winthrop, will challenge Eve's determination to tell her story--and Julia's resolve to guard her heart. And as Julia learns just how far Eve's enemies will go to keep her book from publication, she also discovers that Eve has one last, dark secret to share. It is one that will change Julia's life--and could cut it brutally short.
Customer Reviews:
Genuine Lies by Nora Roberts.......2007-05-18
I really like this book because it is set in hollywood. Nora Roberts is one of my favorite writers. I have already read most of her books. I used to like Danielle Steel, but Nora is my favorite now.
Blah.......2006-11-14
This is so far one of the most boring Nora Roberts books, ever. It was OK but it seriously was a PUSH to get through it, and usually I simply just fly through her novels. The characters are very flat and uninvolved. I was able to guess whodunit way before the act was even done, as well as guess some of the plot twists. The book was fun for the trip to Hollywood-land but besides that it was a LONG book (528 pages) that really would have been better off slimmed down. Lots ado about nothing which leads to boring repeat events and pointless happenings that in the end you discover served no purpose at all to the story.
If you are a NR fan, you may like it but I suggest perhaps finding another novel to read first and borrow this one from a friend.
Grade of a B on This One!.......2005-05-11
When a famous actress, Eve Benedict, is approaching her golden senior years and decides to write her memoirs, what could possibly go wrong? If Nora Roberts is the author, then the answer is always "PLENTY"! Eve hand picks a young female biographer to help write the book and unwittingly endangers all of the people involved.
GENUINE LIES touches on the Hollywood lifestyle, the glitzy lifestyle of Beverly Hills, what some people will do to keep secrets unknown, betrayal and of course romance.
This was one of the first times Nora Roberts crossed the genre line from romance to mystery and does a very decent job of it. She excels in this quest in her later more recent books, but this one could be given a grade of B.
As with most of her novels, Roberts throws in the unexpected and leaves the readers wanting more when they've finished reading the last page of GENUINE LIES!
Genuine Lies.......2004-10-11
Okay, I read this book over like ages ago then suddenly I thought of writing a review for it.
Julia Summers (I don't know what's with this name that authors like) is an author who was hired to write the biography of Eve. And Eve is a star who has a past to tell, secrets to exposs, and love tales to cherish. And through the story people began to plot against Eve and Julia's book. But that's not it, even with all these lies to tell, Eve has one last lie to tell that would change Julia's life forever.
Okay, the book was shallow. I'm telling you right now, characters are shallow in this book. If it wasn't for the last 200-150 pages I would of threw it away. And trust me the first chapter was unbarable! I wanted to just skip it but when I did I was lost. And also...this book could have been SO much shorter, if it was it would have been sooo much more fun to read. This is what you call a good, 'sit-in-a-lounge-with-a-cup-of-wine' book. One that would just keep you busy.
Through the whole book, I didn't want to RP, I didn't get into ANY of the character. Julia's son was very important through the first two chapters then he was suddenly forgetten as if he never existed!
So I give this a 3 star...perhaps 3 and 1/2 but it would not reach 4. How would you like to read a story filled with shallow and heartless characters?
This is a spoiler! The only part that was good is when Eve was killed and Julia and the hero was watching the video of her and the heritance...trust me that's the only good part. Nothing else is good. Nothing else is emotional. That's the only part out of a 500 some pages book that got me shedding tears. That's bad. Usually with a book that length I cry like a waterfall if it's good. >_>
Entertaining from Beginning to End.......2004-06-16
This novel is like a soap opera, but only more fun, more interesting, and more suspenseful. I was dubious in the beginning about this novel because I usually don't like plots with flashbacks, especially when it isn't between the couple falling in love, Julia and Paul, in this case. But this book is a definite exception, most importantly because I love the characters. There were a lot of characters but you get so enraptured in the novel that you actually do end up knowing all the twenty characters or so. Heck, Eve's husbands and lovers probably made up most of it. Despite the many characters, each character was fully developed and had a personality which was great. Also, ever have a person try to describe a soap opera to you with all the love triangles, murder, and revenge? This novel is kinda like that.
This book twists your emotions all around. A reader becomes sad, angry, understanding, and amused, sometimes all at the same time. I was laughing continuously throughout the book, especially when Eve meets Paul for the first time. I was tearing up with a couple of Eve's stories, especially of Charlie Gray's unrequited love of her and his action because of that. Yes, I am being deliberately vague to avoid giving away that story, although there are so many great stories I doubt you'd care. There were also some parts that were supposed to be sad but because of Nora Roberts's witty descriptions, I ended up laughing out loud despite everything. The novel has many plots all intertwining and then tying up into an unpredictable ending. Guessing the killer was a real mystery to me since everytime I thought I had it figured it out, I changed the killer to a different person.
Now about the characters that I loved so much: Some people might think Eve coldhearted but she did care. She was a strong woman that knew everyone's secrets. Eve had a hard life and it was amazing to me how she could keep moving through all the trials that were heaped unto her. Paul and Julia made a great couple, distrustful of each other at first and then coming to love each other. Julia I really liked because she is a heroine, she protects her son in many ways even to the point of knocking a teacher out. :)
There were some dark characters and some dark stories. If you hate books with rape, suicide, infidelity, people sleeping around, murder, and all that--this book might not be for you. Because like I said, it is kind of like a soap opera. But it is a great enough book to see if you would like it or not. Believe me, just buy it.

SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine
ASIN: 0785258604 |
Book Description
The first Geneva Bible opened the pages of Scripture for all readers and provided helpful notes to assist in the understanding of its central message. The Reformation Study Bible, under the editorial leadership of reformed scholars such as R.C. Sproul and J.I. Packer, offers a modern restatement of Reformation truth for the broad evangelical community. A wonderful resource for anyone who desires to understand the impact the powerful truths of the Reformation have had on today's church. Available in the New King James Version.
Customer Reviews:
The best available.......2007-10-03
This is the best modern translation of the scriptures and is especially good for reading aloud. The study notes are the best reflecting Reformed theology.
Great Translation and Great Study Bible.......2007-08-10
The ESV is the leading modern translation for serious students of God's Word. The study notes in this Bible are, as you would expect, from a Reformed perspective, and great benefit is to be had by reading the Word and studying along with the notes. I bought this as a gift, and now I am going to get one for myself.
A Great Study Bible.......2007-07-24
I am very pleased with this bible. Ligonier Ministries did a wonderful job. Everyone else involved did a fantastic job as well. I strongly suggest this study bible to anyone. The ESV is a great literal translation that is quickly becoming my favorite. A must have in my library to be sure.
Disappointed.......2007-07-22
This could be a great study-Bible, but its not. The ESV is the most accurate translation from the original tongues and is highly regarded as such. This version needs a great deal of "polishing up" to make a great study-Bible. The print needs to be darker for starters; the concordance is lacking; maps are very distasteful, the notes are not easy to read, and it lacks depth. I would not buy this again if I had it to do over. It is a very mediocre study-Bible as it is.
For The Next Edition.......2007-06-07
Putting aside the surprising omission of a set of maps, the content of this study bible is superb - ESV, cross references, concordance, excellent notes and very helpful theological articles.
But the book itself is large and HEAVY, not very convenient to carry around, let alone hold and read for extended periods of time.
The publishers need to get expert advice on quality issues relating to paper, printing and binding techniques to produce a more compact, lighter edition.

Customer Reviews:
more practice guide than academic discussion.......2007-01-22
I own several of Alan Wallace's books. I like them all. He presents information from a Western perspective, which I find easier to understand. Here there are specific meditation techniques presented in detail. You are encouraged to practice for a while at each stage using the suggested exercises before continuing on in the book. This book serves as a nice checklist for a complete Buddhist meditation practice, including meditative quiescence (Shamatha), (Buddhist) wisdom meditation, dream yoga and more.
Alan Wallace's other book, "The Attention Revolution: Unlocking the Power of the Focused Mind" would be more appropriate if your interest is specifically in meditative quiescence (mind training).
Not a Manual for Contentment, but a Path to Self-esteem.......2007-01-07
I read the first three chapters of "Genuine Happiness" as the textbook for a class in Tibetan meditation at a Buddhist monastery in Atlanta: a valuable supplement to techniques to quiet the `monkey mind' of frenzied western consumers.
But the book, like Tibetan Buddhist meditation itself, is not about a technique for relaxation, nor merely an escape from frantic behavior. It is a path to an awareness of the necessity for ethical behavior: a prerequisite for true happiness. And, ethical conduct is based not only on clarity of thought but also an awareness of what service to other sentient beings entails.
As an entry to guided mediation, the book is helpful. (Although, mastering new concepts without the aid of an experienced teacher is worse than learning new software without at least a User's Guide.) Life is rarely "intuitive"... No meditation book can function as a self-contained manual.
The profound value of this book is its gentle synthesis of the rational views of western science with eastern visions of esoteric reality that surpass a biological understanding of consciousness. The last few chapters define levels of enlightenment that exceed what most of us can attain - levels of mastery that transcend western explanations of conscious control of our physical reality. These forms of enlightenment redefine the "Happiness" of the book's title.
If you are interested in a genuine path to happiness through service to others (with more self-awareness than one gets from the Boy Scout's oath), this book will be a wonderful companion for your journey.
Accessible Meditations, Enhances Meditation Practice.......2006-02-02
One of my meditation leaders recommends this book and uses similar meditations in small groups. The book goes into more detail than the small group has time to do. But, I found the meditations easy to read and comprehend. This book has extended my meditation practice with both breadth and depth.
A Supreme Guide to Meditation and Contentment.......2005-10-13
This is one of the most concise books I've ever read on meditation and Buddhism's method for leading a virtuous and happy life. This is the one book that brought together everything that I had previously read in other books on Buddhism and meditation. With so many approaches to meditation, it's a relief to find an experienced practitioner who eloquently maps out the elements of Buddhist meditation in relationship to the balanced development of both wisdom and compassion. In particular, I found it very helpful the way the author divides the practice of 'samatha' or tranquility meditation and 'vipassana' techniques or insight meditation. The explanation of the Four Immeasurables (kindness, compassion, empathetic joy, and equanimity) and how they balance our practice that's useful to others as well as ourselves was also invaluable. The writing is condensed and to the point with many jewels of wisdom. I found myself underlining almost every other sentence. If you're looking for a clear outline for meditation practice and how to apply it to your daily practice on an off the meditation cushion, this is a great book to read, study, and put into practice.

Customer Reviews:
Life changing investment........2007-08-23
This bible has taken me much deeper in my understanding of the Word. Every morning when I open this book I am challenged and educated on biblical history, His Story.
I highly recommend this book for the mature believer who is looking to dive deeper into the Word of God.
The New Spirit-Filled Life Bible IS A MUST.......2007-07-13
I have many Bibles in my personal library comprising many translations and I must say without a doubt that this is the number one. All of the many features listed in the description have so far delivered as claimed. The "Word Wealth" through-out the book is very helpful, fabulous in depth book introductions, Kingdom Dynamics, it is also annotated, and has plenty of pages for notes in the back. There are tons of other features in this Bible that I haven't even gotten to yet and that I haven't the space to list here, I am just very excited to own this Bible. I am also pleased that Jack Hayford is the managing editor. As far as the translation - this is the first New King James Version that I have owned and it is already my favorite translation, combining the beauty of the KJV with a little easier readability. I have only had to refer to the NASB or others a couple of times to try and get a little more concise clarification, however, I am sure that I will get used to it rapidly.
As far as book construction, Nelson has done a fine job. Nice leather cover that lays flat, if you highlight you will need the Zebra brand or one that doesn't bleed. It is also thumb indexed which even though that is typically a feature that adds value to the price, I personally could live without it, but that is a minor issue. There is maybe a 3/8" margin for notes so write small, however, there is so much useful info. on each page I have found that alot of the notes that I transfered from my other Bible all I had to do was underline or highlight the notes that were already existing on the same page in this Bible.
In closing, it is my opinion that any and all Christians can strengthen their knowledge of the Lord using this Bible in their daily walk. Once, again, I can not stress enough how much I love this Bible and this translation, Nelson has a homerun here!
NEW SPIRIT FILLED LIFE BIBLE.......2007-05-08
I was extremely pleased with my purchase. The delivery time was shorter than i expeected. This is a great study bible with many helps throughout each chapter. Very pleased.
A BIBLE TO LAST YOUR ENTIRE LIFE~!.......2007-02-09
I had a hard time picking out a bible for myself because I research, and I love the Amplified version too. However, this bible with its' WORD WEALTH, and fantastic footnotes, helps etc is a lifetime resource. I am happy for the tabbed pages, however, they have grouped books together, like 3 or 4 into one tab so it still does take time to find what you are looking for. The gilt edged pages are really true gold colored. The pages are thin but strong, the binding is flexible. Mine arrived with a scratch on the cover but I so needed a bible i figured it would be ok. I only wish it came in more than one color. I think Jack Hayford and team did an excellent Job on this NKJV and I have found the enormous wealth of studies so vast that It will definitely take a lifetime to study. I HIGHLY recommend this bible as a first or as an additional resource!
Great looking and layed out bible.......2007-01-04
I had done a ton of research for a real good referance bible with being able to look at any while at sea. this was a great choice everything I was looking for with two book tabs, great referances, concordance, and many extras. Do your self a favor and make the Purchase, you won't be disappointed!

The New Testament: A Historical Introduction to the Early Christian Writings
ASIN: 0195284917 |
Book Description
Students, professors and general readers alike have relied upon the Oxford Annotated Bible for essential scholarship and guidance to the world of the Bible for four decades. Now a new editorial board and team of contributors have completely updated this classic work. The result is a volume which maintains and extends the excellence the Annotated's users have come to expect, bringing new insights, information, and approaches to bear upon the understanding of the text of the Bible. The new edition includes a full index to all of the study material (not just to the annotations), and one that is keyed to page numbers, not to citations. And, to make certain points in the text clearer for the reader, there are approximately 40 in-text, line drawing maps and diagrams. With the best of the Annotated's traditional strengths, and the augmentation of new information and new approaches represented in current scholarship, the Third Edition will remain the reader's and student's constant resource.
Customer Reviews:
Too, too scholarly. Not for lay study!.......2007-09-12
`The New Oxford Annotated Bible' of the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) translation, with the Apocrypha, was my first, entirely uncritical choice for a study Bible when I began teaching an adult Bible Study class. I have no trouble with the translation, as it is the translation of choice for most American Lutherans, so I accept that.
What I discovered, as I discover with so many other books with the `Oxford' imprimatur, is that while the volume is sound, it is not always the best in the field. When I started looking at other study bibles, I was skeptical of the fancy multicolored sidebars, section headings, and marginalia. Now, I'm not so sure these are such a `bad' thing, even if they don't shout `scholarship'.
The `New Oxford...' certainly shouts scholarship in its copious footnotes to the way in which certain terms have been translated by the NRSV scholars. This was how I discovered that the NRSV is a `politically correct' translation in that it changes all masculine references to terms combining genders (`we' or `men and women' in place of `he' or `man'). This is annoying, as it makes it a less satisfactory translation for scholarship, but, knowing is better than not knowing.
The volume also has superb maps. For these alone the book may be worth owning, as so many other Bible Study maps are inaccurate or lacking in detail. These are combined political and topographical maps for all major periods of Biblical history, such as Canaan in the time of Abraham to Moses, Sinai during the Exodus, Israel in Canaan, and so on. My only complaint is that most maps span two pages, and since the pages are sewn into signatures, scanning or photocopying a good image of the maps is very difficult. Even better is the index to the maps. There are also black and white political maps scattered throughout the text, but these are probably far less useful. It would have been better to gather these all in one place, but that's me. I must say that there is an index to all these maps in the text, so some forgiveness is in order.
From there, things tend to fall off a bit. The volume ends with a series of essays, tables, and a short concordance. This last item seems to me to be quite a waste of space, as it takes up 63 pages, while Strong's Concordance fills over 1800 pages. I suspect Oxford left something out! In fact, my favorite test case, a search for `olive tree', as it appears, for example, in Paul's letter to the Romans, is not to be found. While Oxford has three references to `olive', Strong has 37! The essays I find are sound, but really too short for anything but a quick introduction to their material. Especially noisome is the fact that the essay authors give no bibliography attached to the end of their essays. I did find the table of parallel texts very useful, especially those covering the Old Testament. The parallels of the Synoptic gospels are familiar enough, but the multiple occurrences of, for example, the description of the fall of Jerusalem in Jeremiah and 2 Kings is useful. I did find the chronological table of rulers a useful aide de memoir, although it would have been even more useful to express these genealogically. I seem to recall that Herod the Great, the first of his dynasty, was married to some cousin from the Hasmonean line of rulers. My primary objection to the volume is the dry and uninteresting layout of the scriptures themselves. I get practically no value from the footnoted material, as there is no flag in the text to bring your eyes down to the footnotes. There is also nothing to relieve us of the tedium of verse after verse of small Times New Roman typescript. It uses the method of very subtle verse numbers, to less interfere with the flow of the text, but I'm not so sure I like that, especially when I'm trying to find a verse.
I regret that I can't compare this to another study bible, as I have just started looking at others, thereby having the scales fall from my eyes regarding the value of the Oxford. Stay tuned for more, as I find better guides. I have heard, if you can get your hands on a copy, that the Harper Collins Study Bible, edited by Wayne Meeks, is excellent.
Best Bible EVER.......2007-08-24
This is the best Bible I've ever bought. The NRSV is an excellent, easy to read, yet still scholorly translation of the Bible, and the Oxford Annotated Bible is excellent for the common reader and for the university student. Much less like a "study bible" than the 2nd edition, and much more like something I would analyze the bible with.
Ultimate Edition for Study.......2007-07-29
This book is fantastic and totally informative. From the footnoted annotations filled with historical and interpretive information for all passages, to the linguistic orgin of the translations of each word, this bible is truly a key to grasping a historical version of Christianity.

Look at other study Bibles like the Concordia Self-Study Bible, before you get this one. It is very limited in notes and is not a study bible at all. I own one and with so many other better choices out there I cannot understand why anyone would bother with this.
not what I expected.......2007-06-13
I was looking forward to using this new Bible for study and for prayer. I was not aware that Apocrypha was not included. No where in the ad was it mentioned that this bible did not include this element of the New Revised Standard Version. I will be able to use this Bible for some of my study program but I had to buy another Bible that included the Apocrypha to assist my prayer life.

Book Description
"A STORY THAT NO OTHER AUTHOR COULD HAVE PUT
TOGETHER . . . Roemer [is] America's most decorated FBI agent."
--Chicago Tribune
For forty years Tony Accardo was America's most dangerous criminal. He cut his teeth on the Chicago mob wars of Capone and Elliot Ness. He got his nickname "Joe Batters" for killing two men with a baseball bat. As the bodies piled up, Capone's youngest capo murdered and schemed his way to the top.
William Roemer was the first FBI agent to face Tony "The Big Tuna" Accardo. Now, Roemer tells the story that only he could tell: the deals, the hits, the double-crosses, and the power plays that reached from the Windy City to Hollywood and to New York. Drawing on secret wiretaps and inside information, ACCARDO chronicles bloodshed and mayhem for more than six decades--as Roemer duels against the most powerful don of them all. . . .
"Roemer brings the reality of organized crime home to us."
--Boston Herald
"A big, sprawled out account that serves as anecdotal history of organized crime."
--Kirkus Reviews

Readable, Interesting, and a bit flawed .......2007-01-26
Retired FBI Agent William Roemer (1926-1996) takes an interesting look at one of Chicago's most infamous mob bosses. Anthony "Big Tuna" Accardo (1906-1992) was a player in the syndicate from the prohibition-era 1920's until his death more than six decades later. Once complimented as "a real Joe Batters" by Al Capone for having killed another mobster with a baseball bat, Accardo had a mix of toughness, brains, and closed-mouthed brawn. As the author shows, these characteristics helped him rise through the syndicate ranks and avoid the downfalls (imprisonment, early death) of many associates. Accardo ran or helped rule the Chicago syndicate as boss, consiglieri, and finally as elder statesman. Readers also get a look at the Chicago mob and its many sources of illegal activities. The author regards his subject with a mix of distaste and respect, as did so many others in and out of law enforcement.
Roemer's books are very readable, but they suffer from a few doubtful claims and flirtations with the facts, not to mention some self-boasting by the author. Still, his easy-reading narratives on the Chicago mob are worth a look.
Giving law enforcement a black eye.......2006-10-20
Incredible. Here we have a retired FBI agent writing about a thug who he claims is the best godfather ever. He writes so admiringly about Tony Accardo that I really believe he wanted to give Joe Batters a foot massage, back rub and ticker-tape parade. I had to put the book down before I puked. True, the writer covers a lot of ground in his homage to this killer-thug and parasite, but it's all wasted by his glorification of a criminal.
Roemer Strikes Out.......2005-09-16
I find it amusing that every gangster biographer wants to elevate his subject to the level of being the most important figure ever in the history or organized crime. But one would expect a certain level of objectivity from a former FBI agent, even one who self-promoted himself for years as Chicago's number one Mob-buster. Roemer's admiration for adversary Tony "Joe Batters" Accardo is understandable in a way. Clearly one of the most untouchable mobsters of all time (though it is not true that he never spent a night in jail), Accardo's seventy year criminal career with no standing convictions shows he was no dumb hood. All the same, Roemer goes out of his way to inject Accardo into everything that ever happened in Chicago. His account of the Prohibition years is so far off the mark it's hilarious. He has Tony Accardo saving Capone from Hymie Weiss in the Hawthorne attack, which contemporary accounts credit to Frank Rio. He places Tony in New York with Jack McGurn, Anselmi and Scalise, and "a guy named Rio Burke" as the hitters of Frankie Yale in that city's first Tommygun killing. Strange, as I met the late Rio Burke and SHE never once mentioned handling a machine gun though she was a friend of Al Capone. Tony, McGurn, Anselmi and Scalise and "possibly Fred Burke" (in whose Michigan hideout the machine guns were found) are claimed to have been the St. Valentine's Day Massacre gunmen, on the basis of some bugged conversations Roemer claims to have heard years later and vaguely alludes to. More credible suspects, such as Gus Winkeler, who later ran Moran's former North Side territory for Capone and was highly publicized in the early Thirties, and Raymond "Crane-Neck" Nugent, who was once arrested at Capone's Miami estate, are dismissed as insignificant nobodies on the bare fringe of the Capone mob. Roemer goes on to have Accardo accompany Capone to the famous Atlantic City Mob convention, again at the expense of number one bodyguard Frank Rio, and conveniently oversteps the Philadelphia arrest and conviction of Capone and RIO by moving the meeting ahead one year to 1930. I find it amazing that a guy like Roemer could spend all that time investigating the Chicago Mob and display such little knowledge of its early years. No wonder the FBI took so long in catching up with organized crime! Roemer should have either stuck with the Fifties/Sixties time-frame he knew firsthand or else done some competent research on the pre-World War II era. As for the claim that Accardo had "more brains before breakfast than Al Capone had all day," well, like I said earlier, Tony's successful life in crime is impressive, and owes much to his low-key style but one doesn't need to distort history to emphasize this. And, when it all comes down to it, Capone was the guy who built the Chicago Mob and the guy who brought Accardo up through the ranks as well. Successful as he was, Tony was only following in Al's footsteps like so many others.
THE GANGSTER WHO MADE IT.......2005-03-29
Finally there is a book about the man that was the driving force behind the Chicago Outfit. While Sam Giancana has the fame and if often credited as being the Outfit's boss in the 60's, little is there any mention of the man who put him there. This is a great overall book with plenty of history on the man who the law couldn't lay a hand on.If ever there was a "successful gangster" it was Accardo, and this book explains why. This is also a great book to famialize yourself with Chicago's major organized players from Al Capone down to Joe "The Clown" Lombardo.
this guy was the godfather.......2004-06-18
Tony Accardo was the most successful mob boss of all time.At the top for 48 years! To put that in perspective Al Capone was boss for 5 years(1925-30)and John Gotti from 1985 to his death in 2002,but more than half of that he was in jail.Accardo did it all, from young apprentice of Capone favorite "Machine Gun" Jack McGurn to shooter in the St. Valentine's Day Massacre(according to Accardo's and Murray Humphrey's secretly recorded conversations in the 1950's and 60's)to Las Vegas kingpin to running the infamous Teamster's union(bet Accardo could tell you what happened to Jimmy Hoffa). This guy was responsible for literally hundreds of deaths, many of them very brutal, but reigned almost completely free from police interference save a few nuisance i.r.s. cases and congressional hearings. As others write,Roemer has a rather scattershot way of writing(it's even worse if you've read his other books as he likes to repeat his stories)but almost all info(except his Notre Dame mentions and his extreme love of God)is mob related and ain't that what you're here for? Some people find that there wasn't enough Accardo personal info but so what. What's there to wonder about?Did Accardo love his wife and kids?Did he kick his dog?Who cares. The guy was the mobster of mobsters and his criminal life is well documented and that's all that matters to me.I guess there is one story in the book that gives you a look into Tony Accardo' soul. His close friend of 40 years(the guy wasn't a mobster,he was the Accardo house caretaker)gave testimony in front of a grand jury and disappeared off the face of the earth days later. How's that for knowing Tony personally?

Finally an ESV you can read!.......2007-08-01
I prefer the ESV to preach out of, but until now, had to print out the text for my messages, because I could not see the tiny type from the pulpit as I presented the message. NOW I can see! The giant type is not really so giant as it is reasonably sized. I can now back off from the pulpit a bit and still see the verses. No more squint and back/forth with the Bible for me. Might I suggest that THIS font become the standard, and a larger one be used for the giant print? I would imagine more folks would use it if they could see it! :-)
Before you buy the "premium bonded" . . .!.......2006-10-09
I'll start by saying the ESV version of the Bible is wonderful. This presentation of scripture is eloquent and flowing. I would recommend this version to just about anyone.
Now about the binding . . . I own two ESV bibles. I purchased the Heirloom Reference Edition about a year ago, and was beyond delighted when I received it. The Heirloom binding is thick and luxurious. The pages are also thick, egg-white in color, with very generous margins, and "large" print. It is one of the finest Bibles I own.
I wanted a second less expensive ESV Bible to purchase for outside-the-home use. Thus I purchased and began using the "Premium Bonded Leather" version on July 1, 2006 (three months ago). First of all, it does not feel like bonded leather at all. More like "leatherflex" (which I believe is textured paper, made to look like leather). More importantly, the binding performs like leatherflex. It does not bend; it creases. Yesterday after only 90+ days use, the spine SPLIT. I can identify about four additional places that will also split in a matter of weeks. Also, the edges are worn down. I have always wanted a worn-out Bible like Kay Arthur's or Beth Moore's, but not this soon. This Bible is in worse shape than the Bibles that I have used extensively for several years.
If you are interested in this version, I would recommend purchasing the Heirloom Edition. Granted, it is quite a bit more expensive; however, a Bible is a lifetime purchase, and the Heirloom comes with a lifetime guarantee.
The Shoddiness Continues............2006-02-23
Shoddy. Cheap. Glue-bound. Spine-cracking.Short ribbon marker. Junk. But, inside this inferior piece of work lies one of the finest English translations of the last fifty years. However!! Customers be aware!: In Summer, 2005, I, and many others, received an e-mail asking for suggestions for changes, because the English Standard Version Translation Committee is now working on a revision already!!!! It will probably be out in 2007. Everything is pretty hush-hush. The egalitarian folks on a few websites are probably pushing for more inclusive language. So, maybe purchasing ANY ESV should wait until the revision appears. Back to this edition. The print is fairly large(12.75),a better font could have been chosen, and could be darker. The ribbon marker barely extends beyond the bottom page. The spine cracks easily in front and back(already sent one back to Crossway for this). It has book intros and a fairly concise Concordance. Most Crossway Bibles are garbage.
HEY CROSSWAY!! If you can't make a decent Bible, give the rights to folks who can and will!!! As for me, I love the ESV, but I'm using real quality editions from Foundations Publications who do the NASB.
Pure reading pleasure.......2005-07-08
Now that I am in my 50s I wanted a Bible that had larger print and I found it in the ESV large print edition. I bought the leather bound copy and it is a truly fine Bible. It comes with a ribbon marker (to keep the ribbon from fraying dab a little clear finger nail polish on the bottom half inch of both sides of the ribbon). The leather is stiff but will soften as it is held and also saddle soap can help. The 12.5 point font size is wonderful. It is so refreshing to read a Bible that is simply the Bible text and nothing else. There are translator notes which enhance the ESV but there are no cross references with this edition (which I am happy with). Just to sit and meditate on the pure text is something I wanted. The ESV comes in many fine variations- the Reformation Study Bible is terrific, their reference editions are also very fine. As far as being a good translation- this is bound to give the NIV, the NAS and the NKJV a real run for the money. I find it is elegant, precise and reverent. All in all, this is worth every penny of investment to have a large print leather bound Bible which with a little care will be a treasured companion for life.
evangelicalbook.......2005-07-05
This is the best ESV format available. I would rate it next to any bible on the market. The ESV is likely to become an extremely popular translation. It has overwhelming support from the evangelical community. It is extremely accurate as well as being elegant, keeping in touch with its Tyndale-King James-RSV roots. This translation is very similar to the RSV, though archaic English has been updated, and as one pastor has stated, it has been given an evangelical "faith lift." I consider it the best Bible at present. It would be nice to have a large print reference edition in the future. For more information see esvbibles.com

Pentacostal/Charismatic Sourcebook of Lists...& Racism.......2007-06-06
I found a nearly perfect copy of the 1967 Dake's edition at an estate sale a few years ago, and purchased it along with a well-worn Scofield Bible. Since I've always had trouble keeping the different sects of Christianity straight in my mind, I thought they would be helpful in understanding some of the more recent trends in Christian thought, such as dispensationalism (the belief that God has different expectations of people at different points in history), etc. I was pleased to discover the many comments throughout and charts in the back explaining many of the beliefs common among some (not all) Charismatic (and others, I'm sure) Christians. Dake's Bible is full of commentary and a mind-bogglingly fascinating number of lists. The commentary is right there in the columns next to the text for easy reference--of course it is his opinion, and he doesn't list what other books or materials may have inspired his thoughts.
As I understand it, Charismatic Christians believe in gifts such as prophecy, visions, speaking in tongues, revelation & authority given--and this is the line of Christianity in which Dake included himself. Since another reviewer asked about a racist footnote in the Acts 17: 26 (c), which notes, "See 30 reasons for segregation of races, p. 159", I thought I'd share what I have in my original edition here.
Page 159 of my 1967 edition notes in one of the side lists titled "30 reasons for segregation of races". Among the 30 reasons given are:
"1. God wills all races to be as he made them, any violation of God's original purpose manifests insubordination to him(Acts 17:26, Rom 9:19-24) 2. God made everything to reproduce after his own kind (Gen 1:11-12, 6:20, 7:14) 3. God originally determined the bounds of the habitations of nations (Act 17:26, Gen 10:5, 32, 11:8, Dt 32:8) Kind means type and color or he would have kept them all alike to begin with. 4. Miscegenation means the mixture of races, especially black and white races, or those of outstanding type of color. The Bible even goes farther than opposing this. It is against different branches of the same stock intermarrying such as Jews marrying other descendents of Abraham (Ezra 9-10, Neh 9-13, Jer 50:37, Ezek 30:5) 5. Abraham forbad Eliezer to take a wife for Isaac of Canaanites (Gen 24:1-4)...6. Abraham sent all his sons of the concubines, and even of his second wife, far away from Isaac so their descendents would not mix (Gen 25:1-6)...19. Jews recognized as a separate people in all ages because of God's choice and command (Mt 10:6 Jn 1:11) Equal rights in the gospel gives no right to break this eternal law...29. Wearing Garments of mixed fabrics forbidden (Dt 22:11 Lev 19:19) 30. Christians and certain other pepole of a like race are to be segregated (Mt 18:15-17 I Cor 5:9-13,6:15, 2 Cor 6:14-18, Eph 5:11, 2Th 3:6-16, I Tim 6:5, 2 Tim 3:5[....]" (page 159 of NT)
Recent editions no longer include the "30 reasons for segregation". A note from the Dake family website explains, "...And so in the fall of 1996, we discussed the matter as a family and made a unanimous decision to edit or remove any note that could possibly be misconstrued as a racist comment. The first printing to reflect these changes was done in January 1997"
These "30 reasons..." are examples of separation via cultural, nationalistic, and ritual taken from various OT & NT books. Finis Dake grew up in an era and an area where this was definately a topic of debate in Christian and social circles--some fought for an end to injustice, some fought to keep the status quo. Racism and the use of Biblical text to explain, support or justify racism was simply a reality of the time and place--certainly not a logical or fair one.
Seeing these beliefs practiced and justified by so many other Christian leaders of his era and previous, trying to understand why such a separation _still_ existed in Christianity despite the words attributed to Paul, etc., I am not surprised this one list on this topic made inclusion with so many others. The mention of "Miscegenation" suggests modern application, as Dake had to define this term in #4. This perhaps speaks of the danger of literalism and interpretation and how precarious it is to attempt defining or understanding situations far removed from their original historical context. Nor is Dake alone in this regard, for the footnote on the 1945 edition Scofield Bible I obtained contains questionable interpretations of the story of Noah, Shem, and Ham in Genesis, which also seems to have been noted by Dake.
There are decent online sources available which give more of Finis Jennings Dake's personal history and beliefs. I did find this Bible interesting for the view it gave into a Charismatic Christian way of considering things. Clearly this was a labor of love and a lot of work went into it--hence 4 stars (I have no doctrinal opinion to share here--it is what it is).
Polarizing bible.......2007-05-26
I have known of this bible for years but never looked into it until recently. I was amazed at the variance in the reviews here on Amazon; many people rate it an enthusiastic 5 stars while others give it a scathing one star. I can see why this is; it is the most personally polarizing bible that I have ever looked it and here is why:
The amount of annotations is amazing! Truly this man spent HOURS researching God's Word. There is a plethora of lists, word studies, and outlines, many of which I REALLY, REALLY like and gain much from, perhaps more than any bible I have ever had. They cause me to think and go back and study the text to find the outlined points. I like the way they summarize the sections of the text and make it easy to locate certain verses.
Conversely, there is also a lot to dislike, and I really hate to have to add this part of the review when there is so much that I DO like about the bible. However, as noted in so many reviews below, there are some SERIOUS theological errors in this bible regarding the Incarnation of Christ, the Trinity, creation, racism etc. I will not go deeply into these as they have been well covered by previous reviews. I agree that the views expressed by Dake on these doctrines are heretical, even looney. I admit that I wonder if it is wrong to own a bible that expresses such glaring errors about Christ.
One thing of interest, I looked up Acts 17:26 as one of the older reviews cites this verse as an example of having an extremely racist annotation attached to it. I have the July 2006 printing and in this edition, the racist annotation is gone. The annotations go from A, B, to D, although C is marked in the text. Annotation C is gone with a small blank in its place--and the racist comments previously noted are not in this edition. Perhaps the publisher became ashamed and withdrew it? If others readers have other older printings , I would be interested in your comments to see if indeed there is an annotation removed from here.
I have the genuine leather edition. It is a beautifully made bible and seems very durable, one of the better constructed ones around. It appears that the pages are sewn and not glued, a plus this day in age. The pages are not too thin, and the type tiny but clear. The four column layout is somewhat difficult to read at first, but you get used to it. There are some maps and diagrams in the back, many pertaining to Dake's view of end-times prophecy.
All this being said, I would not be comfortable recommending Dake to new believers, although I think older believers who are more grounded can gain a lot of value out of this bible if used with discretion. All in all, the Dake is a bible with many good notes that are sadly combined with a lot of loose doctrine.
Dake Annotated Reference Bible. Leather cover........2007-05-15
This is a great study Bible. Cross-referenced and annotated. I purchased this one for a gift. It is so complete with notes and references that I feel it is not necessary to own a Concordance with this Bible. Matter of fact, I just went out and bought one for myself.
Awesome!.......2007-03-30
This Bible is absolutely awesome! It give such detail that you can't NOT understand the scriptures. With Hebrew and Greek translations, it just comes alive. The writing is TINY so you might need some glasses, but other than that, I have not been able to put it down. My understanding of the most basic scripture is much more clear.
Excellent Source For Spiritual Growth.......2007-03-08
Dake's is one of a few Bibles with much commentary that sheds a new light on God's Precious Word.

My Favorite So Far.......2003-08-08
I am a pastor, and over the year's I have had the privilege of using several different study Bibles. I have used the Open Bible, Thompson Chain, Matthew Henry Study Bible, Dakes, Word, and Scofield to name a few. The notes and helps in each of these have their particular strengths and weaknesses. I could comment on each but will not. For my expository style of study, I have found that I like the Ryrie by far the best. What I am looking for is insight into the scripture for what it actually means, giving consideration to the original intent of the author, NOT JUST A PRETTY DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT. In the Ryrie, notes on Old Testament symbolism with New Testament fulfillment are great. In particular the notes in Hebrews are very well thought out. The notes in the Gospels are also excellent.
Dr. Ryrie chose his words in his notes to be concise meaningful but not overly wordy. This allows for the Bible not to be cumbersome to use with overly exhaustive notes that give repetitious lists (i.e. Dakes). If I had to choose one study Bible for the rest of my life this would be it.
My only regret: I purchased the less expensive bonded leather rather than the genuine leather. Now I have a favorite Bible that is full of my own hand written notes and underlined passages, but the cover is separating. Oh Well...

Ryrie Study Bible.......2002-11-02
This is an excellent Bible with a lot of extras that provide in depth information without just being filler. My only complaint is that there's not more room for notes.
Excellent resource!.......2002-01-28
In the short time since my purchase of this Bible, it has become my primary carry and reading Bible.
First, the explanations are quite thorough and researched. The introduction to each book of the Bible is quite useful for setting the stage for understanding the material to follow. Timelines are also included to help place Biblical events in perspective.
The overall quality of construction of this Bible is tip notch. I feel that even with heavy use, this Bible will be around for many years.
Ryrie Study Bible.......2000-05-16
I would like to highly recommend this Bible for anyone who is interested in studying God's word. In all my years of Bible study and preaching God's word the Ryrie Study Bible is the best study Bible I have found. I have recommended this Bible to many people and they all have enjoyed it also. It will help you to understand the Bible. It has a very detailed section in the back on Doctrines of the Bible, it also has detailed maps and outlines of the chapters. If you are interested in studying God's word this is the Bible for you.

Book Description
Christ’s command to the church is clear: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations...” It is in building disciples--helping others to embrace Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, mature in him, and then lead others to do the same--that the Kingdom grows. And when the Kingdom grows, churches do, too.
In Growing True Disciples, respected author and researcher George Barna helps pastors and leaders assess how their churches are doing in fulfilling their role as disciplemakers. And he reveals models and examples that will equip churches to dramatically increase their effectiveness. As a result, your church can begin to see more involved members who want to live out their faith in submission to God, and joyfully share their resources to fulfill Christ’s commission.

A key study on discipleship for church leadership.......2006-12-03
This is the first George Barna book I have read, although I have heard of his writings in discussions within the church I attend. I look forward to reading more of his work. This was one of two texts used in my Discipleship Ministries course in my master's seminary study.
Barna begins the book with the need for this writing, and the need to focus on disciple making within the church. He notes how the word "disciple" has lost its meaning and that today anyone who semi-regularly attends church without any outside study or work can be called a disciple by today's definition. He describes what Scriptural discipleship is and how it is much more than doing a few things for God. Instead, discipleship is devoting one's whole self to God, and the teachings of His Son, Jesus Christ.
He then discusses the importance of discipleship and gives a brief look at discipleship exemplified in Scripture. He lists the marks of discipleship according to the Bible, and in the next chapter gives the results of his individual surveys of Christians. He asks basic questions of the central dogmas of Christians to determine what the goals and knowledge level of people in the church. He surveys the discipleship activities of people, and their belief in what constitutes success spiritually. Some of his more surprising findings are that more than half surveyed have no specific goal in spiritual growth, and almost half believe that anyone can get to Heaven regardless of spiritual belief, despite most having a very high view of Scripture as the Word of God. He looks at different aspects of discipleship including service, study and evangelism. (Evangelism is a key aspect because many churches equate evangelism and discipleship, when Barna states from Scripture that it is only an aspect of discipleship.)
Then Barna describes how we as a church got to this point of discipleship (i.e. from Scriptural discipleship to the variations of concentration and different levels of commitment). His conclusion is that this is a leadership issue. He goes about describing the changes without being harsh or singling out any individuals or denominations. He describes the need for holistic discipleship rather than the partial discipleship views many churches have.
In chapter 6, George Barna switches from discussing his research of individuals to that of churches. He discusses the keys that effective discipling churches have and the methods that they employ. With Barna, the key is not a single method, but principles that underlie a given method. The method should be tailored to a congregation, and not something generic. In the methods, he focuses on 5 highly effective churches and their programs that have caused discipleship growth. He finishes with his "best of" model that takes the best attributes from each model, and creates a generic, principle-driven model for churches to use. This model is not a how-to, as each church has different needs, but is the framework in which to build a model that can best work in a given church. The onus is on the pastor to build it based on his knowledge of the community and congregation.
We see many books on effective church growth and effective evangelism, but this book on effective discipleship is the best way to cause a church to grow and to evangelize to the lost.
This is an important book. It is grounded on the Bible and utilizes observations of the church and of society to draw conclusions on the state of Christian discipleship in America. The underlying principles are designed for church leaders, but the book is supremely beneficial to people who are not in leadership roles, yet, as it discusses the needs of individuals in seeking true discipleship as well as giving guidelines for pastoral leaders in designing church-wide discipleship ministries.
Usually, I provide any negative things I note in the writing or organization, but with this book I had no such impressions. The book is logically organized, and is a highly edifying book, despite the controversial topics discussed. Never did I get a hint that Barna was being negative in his writing, but simply points out the needs of individuals and of churches.
Gotta Have It.......2006-07-13
If you are serious about descipleship development you really need to read this book. George Barna has a way of expressing the truth in this book that I find refreshing. I have read a number of books on discipleship and spiritual development but I have never seen the simple truth and direction stated so clearly. If you are looking for adult or older youth study material this book will provide plenty of material. Small group development can also work with this material.
Decent but doesn't deliver.......2005-11-22
While I very much valued the objective data presented in this book, I really felt disappointed at the depth of content. It took me a mere hour and a half to read and honestly felt that much of that were simply flowered sentences that left you wanting for content.
It was helpful to be pointed toward congregations that seem to be doing a good job of "growing true disciples," but for me there seemed to be a competing thought in this work. On one hand, you've got Barna talking aobut the organic dynamics present in the early church, but then goes on to recommend profiles and documentation to attempt to measure spiritual growth.
So, definitely some value here as a reference, but not as a book for strong practical content, in my opinion.
Survey of Christian Beliefs vs Practice worth the price.......2005-04-28
Barna didn't invent the idea of growing disciples. Instead, Barna's surveys and statistics, amply provided and discussed in Growing True Disciples, provide the EVIDENCE and CLOUT needed to move leaders in any church off their programming butts and toward a more vital disciple-building ministry.
In many ways, Barna's books are like the TV show "Mythbusters." The myth is that "the program church" was getting the job done.
Nothing new about this.......2004-07-03
I was dissapointed that many of the practices and strategies Barna says in this book is almost identical with strategies of the church I know. Regrettably, he fails to mention about the church.
There is nothing new or surprise about the standard of disciple Barna says in the book as it is same standard required to the church where I belong to.
Barna did not mention anything about this nor listed in bibliography. I am sure he has researched the church before he wrote this book and I would like to know the reason he did not mention it.
