The Vinyl Bible.......2007-09-17
Search no more you 33 1/3 vinyl lovers like me who sleep with their albums ..... this is our Bible. I will cherish this edition forever ( well, at least till the next edition ).I just wish it was hardcover and with "gold pages" like the classics. Thank you for showing me the "light" Saint Tim Neely.
Necessary for ALL Audiophiles.......2007-06-17
This book is something no audiophile and collector should be without and sitting in first position next to the other Goldmine price guides and Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock and Roll. The best thing I found about this book is that if you have any questions or something is not listed, you can call the author Tim Neely. He actually calls you back!! Within a couple days even!!!
The real deal!.......2007-05-14
As an avid record collector, one needs to understand the real value of their investment. Until I purchased this book, I was paying more for records than I should have, and less for those I should have spent more on. The later worked in my favor sometimes. This book is THE resource for grading records and the standard for pricing. It also invaluable information about labels and logos, so one for ex. doesn't pay 1st pressing price for 2nd or 3rd pressings or NM or Ex prices for $1 merchandise. It is an honest publication and well worth it! I actually take this book with me when I search for LPs and grade my own! The only question I have is, where is the Electric Flag (left out for some reason!)
Goldmine Record Album Price Guide.......2007-04-10
This book was a big help in determining price for each record. However, when I took the records to a record store to sell them they were not worth as much as the book claimed. It is probably because the book is based on collector prices and I have not looked into selling to a collector. Overall it's a great book especially if you don't know anything about records.
Goldmine Record Album the"BLUEBOOK"for records.......2007-03-08
I have used this book in the past and again it comes through with ease of use. My only wish is for an updated annual version every year. It is very easy to read and understand. It prevents any mistakes in what a record may be worth. It stops "rip off" record shops and dealers in thier tracks. We use it to buy and sell on ebay. I recently saw a Beatles record sell on ebay for $1000 it was worth no more than $800, the original asking price was $5000!!! Buyer and seller beware, we that know - use this book.

A valuable guide to keep with you.......2007-04-04
Like Mr. Doyles other new Lionel train guide for post war trains, the Collector's Guide to Prewar Lionel Trains, 1900-1942 is prove to be an important resource for both the buyer and seller of antique Lionel train sets. Containing information on virtually every toy train made by Lionel between 1900 and 1942, the book will prove to be a gold mine of information. However I found two of the appendices at the end of the book to be of particular value. Appendix I, Awakening Sleeping Toys and Appendix II, Setting Up Your Train each contain information important to the collector. There is also a small chapter on Lionel Catalogs and Paper Products and another chapter devoted to Accessories, Toys and Novelties.
All in all this is one you'll want to keep close.
record value.......2007-03-20
Has just about every record ever made with its corresponding value. Only thing not listed are instrumentals.
45 RPM Price Guide.......2007-02-06
I have found this to be the most informitive book on 45's that I have ever read. Not only does it give you a guideline on the value of the records in your collection, but it also gives you information on the artists such as other groups the artist has been with and the groups that have changed their names over their careers
As good as it gets.......2005-07-28
With records becoming more and more plentiful, it does lose a little of the obscure stuff it used to carry. However, it is a MUST for any collector!
Just the think you need for a lifetime hobby........2004-07-17
Ever wondered how much one of those 45s you have is worth? Here's the place to look. Not every artist is listed but with every new edition, more are added. I have a first edition which contains over 30,000 or so entries. The reason why I asked what I did above is beacuse if your collection contains older records or records that look just like the day they were first sold, you could probably have a collection worth thousands of dollars. Some songs are available on different labels, ones that are easy to find rather than ones that are rare on other labels. I saw that a near mint copy of "For Your Precious Love" by Jerry Butler and the Impressions on the Vee-Jay label is worth $10,000. A very good codition of that record is over $1,000. If someone has something rare like that or colored vinyl, they are lucky!! If this is your hobby whether you've started or it's been with you all your life, you shouldn't be without this book. RECOMMENDED!
Book Description
Tea gowns, yards of flannel and pillow-case lace, stereoscopes, books of gospel hymns, the New Improved Singer Sewing Machine, side saddles, milk skimmers, straight-edged razors, high-button shoes, spittoons — some 25,000 items in all, most illustrated. A true record of an era.

Also makes a great gift for the over 60 crowd..........2006-01-27
I've given away several of these reproduction catalogs as gifts and they're always a big hit. Instantly, the recipients open the book and start studying its pages, remarking at the prices and oohing and ahhing over the more curious items of the day.
This book gives a detailed and accurate picture of a typical "day in the life" 110+ years ago. Think about that for a moment. Can you really imagine someone looking at a 2005 newspaper in the year 2,110?!
Buggy whips and patent medicines and cook stoves (fired by kerosene, wood or coal!) and portable bathtubs and cream separaters and more were featured in this catalog.
This is a wonderful resource and a fun read. You can lose yourself for hours reading about life "back in the day."
A little trivia: There's a story (as told on PBS's documentary, "Mr. Sears' Catalog") that the Sears Roebuck catalog was a tiny bit smaller than the mail order catalog offered by his competitor, Mr. Aaron Montgomery Ward.
Sears (a marketing genius) knew that the farm wife would probably have both the Sears and Ward's catalog in her home. Sears made his catalog a little narrower and shorter than the Ward's catalog, so that when the little lady was tidying up the house, the Sears catalog, being smaller, would end up stacked on TOP of the Ward's catalog!

Essential for historians and a priceless piece of Americana.......2004-08-17
How nice that someone has preserved both a piece of history and a part of the legendary and much-missed Montgomery Ward stores. If you study or write about history, you'll find this a fabulous reference of period styles, furnishings, and common items. Fun to read as a curiosity piece, too.
A time capsule of what they wanted out on the farm in 1895.......2002-11-09
This "Montgomery Ward & Co. Catalogue and Buyer's Guide" from Spring/Summer 1895 is better than a time capsule. Most of my ancestors were still on the far side of the Atlantic that year, but for my maternal grandfather's ancestors here are 25,000 items (most of which are illustrated by woodcut) that they could have either had in their homes or dreamed about owning. From straight-edged razors and high buttoned shoes to tea gowns and the New Improved Singer Sewing Machine. Historically, Montgomery Ward prided itself on being the friend of farmers and the official supplier to the Grange. Ward was the first to offer a product guarantee that became the key to earning the respect of rural consumers and building the business. However, in 1887 Ward's main competetior Sears put out his first catalog and upped the ante by showing the customer what they would be buying before they bought it (okay, he also offered lower prices). By the time this 600-page catalogue came out in 1895 Ward was following suit. Flip through it and see what sort of amenities were making their way out to the farms at the end of the 19th-century. You could buy a buggy for $60 or spend $200 on a piano. Here you can get a bathtub, chairs, watches, hats, and even a Star Raisin Seeder. How about a solid-gold eighteen-karat wedding band for only $5? Looking through these pages will give you a sense what it was like in 1895, when the average worker had to put in 16 hours to earn enough money to buy a hair brush or 260 hours for a one-speed bicycle. Just looking through the pages of books you could order was enlightening. Actually, this is more like a time machine than a time capsule.
Another Treasure Trove of Late Victorian Culture.......2002-10-10
Like the Sears Roebuck catalogue, which sits beside it on my shelf, this unabridged reprint is an indispensable tool for anyone who wants to know the kinds of items that might have been found in a typical middle-class home a hundred-odd years ago. In some ways it's even superior: the illustrations have reproduced more clearly, with their details better visible, and the type, though you may still want a magnifier to read it, is also more easily made out. Prices are of course included, though you'll want to allow for the fact that MW was at that time not a conventional retail house, but confined to mail-order, which allowed it to undercut the "traditional" merchants just as Net sellers can today! There's a full index right at the front, where you can easily look up whatever you may be interested in at the moment; or you can simply open the volume at random and start browsing. And, unlike Sears, it even has a toy section! Like all Dover books, its paper and binding are superior in quality, and will doubtless last very well. Since the items listed don't duplicate exactly, I strongly suggest purchasing both catalogues. As a writer of historical fiction, I use both frequently. Highly recommended.
A fascinating book to read.......2002-06-12
This wonderful book is a reprint of the 1895 Montgomery Ward & Co. catalogue. Everything is there, along with the pictures for each item, looking just the way they did more than one hundred years ago! My family and I had a high old time thumbing through this book, laughing at the funny styles of clothing, the strange items our forbearers needed (or thought they needed), and generally being amazed at the prices. This is quite a fascinating book to read, one I recommend to any history buff!

Customer Reviews:
Much ado about nothing!.......2000-12-14
What a letdown! While this book purports to cover the period 1950-1975, I was sadly disappointed to find that it completely omits one of the most important musical influences of that period, DON COSTA, who was a noted arranger-conductor, master of the 12-string guitar, a performer in his own right, and a man who influenced the careers of many well-known performers like Frank Sinatra, Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme, Johnny Mathis, Ferrante & Teicher, Paul Anka, and the list goes on. Don Costa's fabulous arrangements have appeared on labels such as ABC-Paramount, Columbia, Mercury, United-Artists, and his own label, DCP-International. Don Costa was a true musical genius and as such, he was hired to be the musical director of a major Boston, MA radio station when he was only 15 years old!... One can only wonder what other important performers or facts were left-out of this book, and such omissions only serve to cast doubt on the seriousness of the data that did manage to find a place between the covers of this publication!
An excellent book that, perhaps, bites off too much.......1998-12-04
This is one of the best price guide books for American records. Due to its detailed information and clearly organized listings, it surpasses all previous publications in its scope and usefulness. It adds artists not previously mentioned in past price guides but does omit artists on a somewhat arbitrary basis. Why Getz and not Gillespie etc.? For the artists it does include, much hard work is reflected in the thorough discographies which list reissue information and pressing chronology with great accuracy. Obscure artists with limited product are, as is common with books of this type, omitted. For the money, this is the best book. Only Osborne's Rockin Records covers more ground, but in less essential detail.
Book Description
Over 3500 items of popular Chinese and Japanese antiques—such as blue-and-white ginger jars, richly carved lacquer boxes, and jade jewelry—receive illustrated, detailed, and up-to-date coverage in this excellent entry in the popular Miller’s Buyer’s Guide series. It’s first divided by type of ware (such as furniture and ceramics) and then subdivided by country for ease of reference. Each section contains practical guidance on collecting, what to be aware of when starting out, how to spot fakes, and ways to avoid making expensive mistakes.

A great sampler........2003-02-04
Encompassing 2000 years of history, and everything from ceramics to furniture to Mao era propaganda, it isn't a comprehensive guide to any one subject. It isn't meant to be; nevertheless it serves as a full intro to the field in one portable volume. Several thousand pieces with prices in Brit pounds (most for museum quality specimens, not the more everyday kind). About 70% b&w, though does include some lovely color sections. Still a bargain.
Too many black and white pictures.......2001-01-05
I bought this book to help me discern chinese porcelain and learn a little more about the oriental collectables. This book has too many black and white photos and falls short of being a necessary refrence guide.

A passionate, upbeat and highly informative look at hybrid cars, their innovative technology, and the cultlike devotion surrounding them.
Customer Reviews:
excellent resource for hybrid car purchasers.......2007-03-29
This is an excellent, clearly written book that brings together lots of different details about hybrid cars, all in one place. I would also recommend "Plug-In Hybrids: The Cars that will Recharge America" for some more information on hybrids around the world, and the new feature of converting a hybrid into a plug-in hybrid.
Hybrid Info.......2007-02-11
Excellent resource, with diverse model information all in one place. Since the technology seems to be somewhat static this book provides good information, expecially if you are going to or have already purchased one of the Hybrids in the book. I'm still on the fence, but the Ford models are calling to me.... I want 4wd.
South Park was Wrong! Hybrids, and This Book, are Cool!.......2006-10-20
Seems the boys from South Park got it all wrong. Hybrid car owners aren't smug, they're cool! And this is the book that certifies their coolness. In addition, it tells in vital detail everything you want to know about the Hybrid car industry, how these vehicles work, their pluses and their few negatives. Well written and entertaining, the strength of the book is that it's not a political statement saying something like "you should buy these crappy cars to save a tree" but is more a veteran, gas-combustion addicted gearhead saying "what do you know, these smooth, clean, gas $$$ saving babies work great and here's precisely why."
Anybody considering buying one of these vehicles - or those who already own one - should absolutely buy this definative book. - Dary Matera

A useful guide.......2007-07-10
If you have discovered a pile of old 78 rpm records of your grandparents and would like to know their value this book is probably NOT the right book for you. As the author indicates, most of the 78 rpm records are without any value for serious collectors. In this book you'll find names of artists that you have never known... Yes believe me: Your Bing Crosby "White Christmas" is not a rare item. It's quite common. Enjoy such a record as a vintage item but not as a collectible record. This is what the author says at the beginning. So once again: Don't buy this book in order to learn the value of your Dinah Shore, John McCormack, Frank Sinatra records..
I cannot judge the values in the blues / rockabilly / country part of the book because I don't listen to such music. The values in the jazz part are in my opinion too low. Example: A rare Gennett in E condition (the book indicates the value of records in E) is very very hard to find and therefore the value is much higher than in the book. I have always paid more for a rare record than the value indicated in the book.
However, the guide gives you an idea of the value of a rare record and this makes the book a must for any serious collector.
A good additional guide for 78s and obscure titles.......2006-12-27
If you collect records by well-known artists or mainstream recordings from the 1960s-1990s,
this probably isn't the guide for you.
But, if you have 78s or obscure labels or titles, this is a great
addition to your record guides. When I was collecting more
intensely a few years back, I found that I ended up using about 6 different guides,
and subscribed to Goldmine magazine, a tabloid out of Iola, Wisconsin. Out of all of these guides together,
I could usually find out what I wanted to know about the records I was collecting.
When it came to 78s, though, this was the book that I always turned to for
information. I didn't always agree with what I saw listed as the value ( of course, I thought my records were worth more. Just look at all the guides till you find a price you like! ) but there
is a lot of good info here. It's worth looking at just to see the record labels
in the front of the book. I found that I could search through stacks of records while hunting armed with the knowledge of what were labels to zero in on for Blues, Jazz and the like, and if I could get the records
cheaply enough, it was often worth the gamble to buy them and listen to unfamiliar artists once I got home.
If you just want a price guide for mainstream music, there are better guides, like:
Jerry Osborne's Official Price Guide to Records,
Goldmine has good guides on 45s and records in general, and if you collect Doo-Wop try "Doo-Wop, the forgotten third of Rock 'n Roll" by Dr. Anthony J. Gribin & Dr. Matthew M. Schiff, and Warman's has guides just on Elvis and the Beatles (two separate books.)
The Official Price Guide to Records has 13 pages on the Beatles compared to a handful of entries in les Docks' book. But, on the other hand, I found a price for a 45 by the 1950s R&B group, the "Go-boys," featuring Dudley Callicutt, in Les' book and nothing in the other guides.
It's all a matter of what you're looking for. And if you have an artist's name, there's an index in the back.
A Worthless Reference Source........Save your money.......2002-02-08
As the other reviews noted, organizing the listings by musical genre instead of artist or record label was really dumb. If that weren't bad enough, the author also makes the mistake of assuming that all or most of his readers should be "knowledgeable collectors", and for that reason, common records are not included at all.
I picked up the first record from my stack, a yellow label MGM, by Billy Eckstine. What genre is he or she? Don't know. After looking through all sections, I never found this record or artist listed. Is it common or rare? I still don't know, and this book helped not at all.
From the introduction: "Following are brief explanations of terms and symbols used by collectors and dealers. Some are forthright and succinct. Others, attempting to define the various styles and idioms of music, are somewhat amorphous, if not downright evasive."....wasn't this supposed to be an informative 'Record Guide'?
Also from the introduction: "Those seeking information about hit or 'charted' records should consult other references". This reviewer agrees.
6th Ed. - Disappointment.......2002-01-27
Fine reference but horribly organized. The author has chosen to structure the book by genre of music and not by artist. In doing so, a particular artist may be found in several different parts of the book depending on what particular record you're looking for. Not only is this cumbersome, it's fairly subjective based on the author's definitions - e.g. is this Rockabilly or country? Is this Blues or Rhythm and Blues? The author admits in the Organization of This Book section that; "The inclusion of a given artist in a particular section is often a matter of arbitrary choice." Additionally, if you have an artist that you're not familiar with, say the Bang Boys for instance...where do you look? Jazz & Big Band? Blues? Country? Rock& Roll?, etc. It is a frustrating experience. To add insult to injury, there is no index to the book (which was the saving grace in the 5th Ed..)
The label references are very good and the actual valuations are beneficial and fairly representative of the marketplace. If the book were re-organized for easier browsing, it would be indispensable.....as it is, it's so-so.
Not What It's Cut-Out to Be.......2001-06-30
Although this guide is recommended by a few 78 RPM record collectors on the internet, I found it full of omissions. Older recordings in my our collection, even though their historical value may be significant to some, are not listed at all. It seems that some of these performers are unknown by the author. Look up John McCormack with your search engine, for instance. Many fans of the records by this famous Irish tenor, particularly in Ireland, would be appalled. The label examples are fun, but are not worth the full new price of the book. Buy it used from Amazon if you want to check it out. Otherwise leave your searches on the internet for other books more beneficial to your collection. For later recordings, or those of the '50s, check out 'Rockin' Records'.

Great picture quality and pricing info.......2007-06-13
This is one of the few carpet books available that isn't a decade old. The picture quality and pricing information is great. Indian carpets make up 50% of the new carpet section with the rest being from Turkey, Pakistan, China, and other regions. What is missing in this section is any mention or pictures of contemporary carpets from Iran. The antique carpet section has a broad selection of carpets from all appropriate regions--including Iran. There is also around 10 pages of information on rug care and cleaning, knot count, new maching made carpets, buying carpets overseas, and judging antique carpet condition. Overall, great book!
oriental rugs.......2006-11-10
the information is broad, and the information excellent in terms of what to look for in rugs, hand made vs machine and the consumer base was detailed.
VERY weak for the price.......2006-03-20
little or no technical explanation of each carpet, just page after page of blurry, low-color pictures, and no grouping of any kind. junk.
Best of the Best.......2006-03-11
Of the half dozen books on oriental carpets I have, this is far and away the best. While most books on the subject are often somewhat snobbish in their approach, this book is refreshingly realistic and inclusive. And this is comment is from someone who enjoys buying and selling oriental carpets and rugs.

Outstanding.......2004-07-26
It really is outstanding. A great resource for anyone who is looking to buy an Oriental Rug. Very Instructive
