4 out of 5 stars Kovels New Dictionary of Marks.......2007-10-12

This is a good resource book. It has it's limitations, but I use it almost daily. I look up alot of ceramics marks, and I find the large majority of them in this Kovels book. It is great if you are looking for a specific makers mark, or decoratoras mark. The limitation is that there is no way to comprehensively view all marks from one particular maker. If you have a few treasures that you want to accurately identify, then it is very good. Don't get me wrong, I haven't found every mark I look for. But I haven't found a Marks reference that I do. This book provides a good clean and easy format to locate the mark I need, and quickly.

Also, if you are looking for back ground info on the company, this isn't the book for you. While the Kovel's do an excellent job of showing literal thousands of easy to find marks, thats all they show. All in all a highly recommended resource. Any serious ceramics collector, dealer, or dedicated flea market/yard saler should have a copy.

Bought this as a gift for my daughter and she has really enjoyed it's contents. Now she can see if the "Junk and/or Antiques" she has purchased has any real value!!

2 out of 5 stars Kovels' New Dictionary of Marks Pottery & Porcelain 1850 to the Present.......2007-02-11

I haven't been happy with this book since I purchased it. Haven't found one mark from any of the pottery or china I have from this book. Only one or maybe two examples of the companies which made the pottery but not the marks. For example I can't even find the simple "Anchor" from Anchor Hawking Co.(There are plenty of other anchors). I have a very nice Blue "Old Fashion"/juice glass fron A.H. but I have never seen one in blue. Looked it up and could not find MARK in this book. I was very surprised. I've been thinking about purchasing the Second Edition of Kovels' book, but been holding back... Can anyone tell me if it is better or if it's just me, I hope..Mary, techmom@usamedia.tv (No Solicitors Please! Only those wanting to talk about this book please reply. NO SPAMMERS!!)

4 out of 5 stars Good reference book.......2007-02-03

Marks on pottery have always been of interest to me. Some are obvious and well-known and others obscure. Couldn't find all the marks I was looking for. Still a good book to have.

4 out of 5 stars Great reference............2007-01-10

This book has been a great reference for finding pottery marks. This volume does not hold a list of all markings ever used, but it comes closer than any others I have used. My only complaint of this book is that it does not group multiple marks that a particular potter may have used over the years. Instead it groups them by design not by maker.
Still this is the most comprehensive markins book I have found in an affordable price range. Well worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars Franciscan:An American Dinnerware Tradition.......2006-11-06

My Father was the last Dinnerware Plant Manager for Franciscan China while it was still made in California. This book included alot of Franciscan China that is usually left out. I recommeded this book to my Father, who bought it and loved it too.

4 out of 5 stars Franciscan: An American Dinnerware Tradition.......2005-09-11

Excellent material, but I wish the colors were more vivid and true to the real colors of the pottery. I recommend the book because it has a wealth of information for anyone who enjoys learning about all the patterns and their history. It would be a wonderful addition to the library of a collector or anyone interested in California pottery.

5 out of 5 stars Franciscan: An American Dinnerware Tradition.......2005-08-23

Great resource. If you're a collector, BUY THIS BOOK. The pricing guide is an amazing reference for rare and uncommon pieces.

3 out of 5 stars Some things lacking . . . ........2002-12-06

The book is well written and I've learned quite a bit. However, I don't like that there isn't a photo of every piece (like the child's plate) or how to tell the difference between a casserole and a covered vegetable. I also didn't like that the price guide doesn't break down the year the item was made, just prices of American made, and made in England. Is one made in 1941 worth more than one in 1980??? The book and the guide doesn't say. I also felt as though it was CLEARLY written from a SALES perspective, complete with a photo of The Replacements headquarters on the back cover!

3 out of 5 stars A good book.......2002-01-20

This is probably the best book on Franciscan dinnerware around. It gives a lot of information on the company, it's history etc. I would have liked to see more information and photos on the handpainted items, namely the Apple and Desert Rose varieties. There are only a few pages devoted exclusively to them. There is a price guide included that covers most of the items, although it doesn't show photos of each piece. I think it's a pretty good book though and I'm glad I bought it.

4 out of 5 stars INFORMATIVE BOOK.......2006-02-27

The book, on the whole, does as its title asserts - uses good photographic images to show the reader the various shapes used by Wedgwood. It also offers some guidance as to the rarity of colors used and a basic historical reference.
Even with the wide variety of shapes shown, there were some missing. The identification of the designs was most informative.

4 out of 5 stars great quick reference.......2004-04-05

This is a great book on wedgwood jasperware. It will definitely help identify genuine pieces and offers great illustrations. I thought there would be much larger collection of pieces illustrated within the book though, so I was somewhat disappointed since none of the jasperware I own was even listed in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Author's opinion given as a reference work but pix are great.......2004-02-07

The title of this book suggests that it is a guide to all Wedgwood Jasper Ware, but the author concentrates strictly on dipped jasper ware. The title should indicate this. The text of the book also is filled with the author's opinions that dipped jasper ware is somehow superior to solid Wedgwood jasper ware and that the latter category of wares is rather declasse. He is certainly entitled to his opinions but they should not be presented as standard for Wedgwood collectors. His collection (and therefore his book)concentrates on a very specific period of production that he prefers but as I stated above the title does not indicate this. Having said that, am I sorry that I purchased this book (indeed pre-ordered it and waited several months for it?) Not at all. The photographs are sumptuous, and that section of the book is superb. The shapes of the pieces and subjects of the bas reliefs listed apply to all types of Wedgwood wares, dipped jasper, solid jasper, basalt, Queensware, drab ware, etc. For this very reason, the book is a valuable reference. Quality books on Wedgwood are few and far between and older ones are difficult to find if one wants to own them and not have to go to a library. In conclusion, drool over the pictures, but divide the text into two categories: Wedgwood history (which the book is short on) and author's opinion (of which there is plenty.)

An addendum of second thoughts:
The book convinced me to acquire my first piece of dipped jasperware. I can certainly see why the author raves about the quality of the workmanship during this period of production. The dipped jasper has qualities that more modern solid jasper does not offer but the solid jasper has wonderful qualities of its own. I will not go so far as to say that one is superior to the other, but that each needs to be appreciated for what it is. I am grateful to the author for expanding my (Wedgwood jasper) vision.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a book on 19th and 20th century Wedgwood.......2004-02-05

While many books have been written about Josiah Wedgwood and 18th century "first period" production, there has been very little information for the collector of 19th century jasperware. Until now. Michael Herman has written a wonderful guide to explain and classify the wide range of dipped jasperware and bas relief ware produced by the Wedgwood factory. If all this book did was to identify the myriad of shapes with their proper shape names, it would be a must read for all collectors and dealers. But the author also provides a wealth of detailed information from his vast expertise on the subject of Wedgwood. A history of jasperware production is given, bas-reliefs are identified, the wide range of colors explained and dated, and there is even a section on jewelry. I definitely enjoyed reading the book and have discovered many new pieces that I want to add to my collection. I look forward to new books by this author.

5 out of 5 stars A Collector's Guide: The Shapes of Wedgwood.......2004-02-02

A collector's guide and shape book filled with wonderful color photographs of the many varieties of Wedgwood jasper ware dip. Author Michael Herman shares his knowledge and experience with other collectors.
It not only provides basic information so important to the beginning collector. It is a resource for all collectors in this area. Each piece is identified as fully as possible-including the bas relief figures.
Dark blue does predominate, not a surprise, as it was the most popular color. Still the other jasper ware colors are well represented.
Most of the pieces illustrated were made between the mid 19th century and the virtual end of jasper dip production in 1940. It is indeed refreshing to have a book that focuses on this period in this area of collecting. The timeless appeal of Wedgwood jasper ware is so well illustrated.

    Book Description

The Homer Laughlin China Company has produced more than 100 different shapes for their dinnerware lines since 1873 (sometimes using mixed shapes in one set) and more than 10,000 decorations. How is one to identify all these variations? Let Jo Cunningham show you how in this new book dedicated to 1940s and 1950s Homer Laughlin products. This was a very prolific time for the company, and represents the era of dishes that people are collecting today. The Fiesta line and Lady Stratford shape are given particular attention in response to their enormous popularity now. Over 500 color photographs display and compare the shapes and decorations, and the well researched text is arranged chronologically to show the developments that help identify individual pieces. Children's dishes and products associated with other companies are also identified and explained. Book Description

The popularity of Japanese ceramics in the West caused a vast and delightful variety of wares to be made in the late nineteenth century for export. Colorful Imari porcelain in deep blue, orange-red, and gold, Fukagawa porcelain in imaginative designs, as well as the softly colored Satsuma earthenwares, are the best known of the old Japanese exports, shown here in hundreds of variations created by skilled decorators. This new edition has an updated values reference and additional items shown in each chapter, especially early Imari wares from the period c. 1700. Also presented are the exotic Sumida and Banko wares, relative newcomers to the field whose popularity has grown steadily over the last ten years. Makers' and decorators' marks, unusual shapes, design variations, and hard-to-find examples are all shown in 600 color photographs with identifying captions and concise text.

2 out of 5 stars Imari Satsuma book review.......2007-06-12

The pictures are wonderful and plentiful as well as history of the styles. What's painfully lacking are examples and explanations of marks. Two and a half pages representing 27 marks with minimum information on any of them. I felt like it was a pretty book to look through, but a poor reference for those looking for information on how to buy Imari or Satsuma. I found no information at all about reproductions or modern pieces that have flooded the market and make it difficult for less than well informed buyers to get genuine pieces of antique Imari or Satsuma.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Japanese Ceramics Book........1998-08-24

Outstanding book for amateur and serious collectors to enjoy - pieces are identified with text and superb coloured photos.

5 out of 5 stars Large number of high quality color photographs.......1998-03-11

Of great interest to dealers and collectors of Japanese export ceramics, this book contains full color photographs of a large number of fine specimans of Imari, Satsuma, Banko and Sumida. Significant number of pieces from the Arts and Crafts period. Sections on markings, bibliography and valuations. I think the valuations are on the low side of current retail prices.

5 out of 5 stars Collector Plates Guide.......2002-02-26

This book is one of the few out there that is of any value in regards to Collector Plates. Although it doesn't always give you an indication on todays current price, it does tell you what the issue prices was, and gives a guideline as to whether the plate is now worth more than what was paid for it, the same, or less. I deal in Collector Plates personally and as a business, and I do use the book as a reference tool pretty often. I do recommend this book as a general guideline to those interested in collecting or selling plates.

This book is a great reference for plate collectors. Although an update is probably due, the book still offers information that holds in today's market. After pricing and selling some 200 collector plates, I have found the prices in the book to be "on the mark". Don't hesitate to add this to your resource collection.

      Book Description

This impressive, informative book portrays the progress of Haviland china in form and decoration from the formative years in the 1840s-1860s, through the development of porcelain manufacturing in the 1870s-1880s, and on into the twentieth century, which brought many changes to the Haviland companies. Over 570 beautiful color photographs show the progression of patterns and style. The early multifloral and botanical designs, the Japanese influence, the Impressionist, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco styles, and recent patterns and shapes all have made Haviland china a porcelain of importance today. To enable the reader to identify patterns, many are cataloged by Schleiger numbers, the form of pattern identification preferred by most Haviland matchers. Also included are sections on setting a proper table, pieces that made up a complete set, and interesting stories about famous and influential people who ate from Haviland china. A listing of back marks and current market prices is included.

        Book Description

This book features photographs of marks alongside their actual pieces for perspective. Other books simply show line drawings, but this massive encyclopedia educates collectors and researchers on what the marks actually look like on a piece of pottery or porcelain. Over 7,500 photographs of around 4,000 marks and items, from Abingdon to Zsolnay, are featured in this huge publication. Organized alphabetically by company, this book is the most user-friendly marks book you'll find, telling readers quickly what it looks like, when it was made, and who made it. Appraisers and dealers will find this guide extremely useful; they can learn a little bit about many different marks, rather than having to weed through extensive historical information on the thousands of marks produced. As an added feature, cross-referencing indexes are provided, by date, shape, and company. AUTHORBIO: Chad Lage is an appraiser of antiques, collectibles, and residential contents, and owner of Hidden Treasures Enterprises in Evansville, Indiana. He has been accredited by the International Society of Appraisers and has been an appraiser for the PBS television series, Antiques Roadshow. Chad is also involved in his local prestigious antiques show as a dealer and porter, and volunteers for the Evansville Museum of Arts and Science. REVIEW: This book is the first book on marks that is a pictorial reference, with actual photographs of marks alongside the pieces they appear on. Arranged alphabetically by company, this massive encyclopedia educates collectors and researchers on what the marks actually look like on a piece of pottery or porcelain. Over 7,500 photos of around 4,000 marks and items from Abingdon to Zolsnay are featured.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book.......2007-09-07

Excellent resource book for china & pottery marks, quality photographs of many marks, well organized. Highly recommend.

1 out of 5 stars Sorry, but it's not all good.......2007-05-23

The idea of putting a picture of an item together with its mark is admirable, and the book is useful in this regard. It is not a complete guide, but then again, no book of marks is.

However, the date information given for some pieces (for example, Syracuse China) is very inaccurate, and there are misidentifications that should not have happened in a book of this type. I would not rely on the dates shown in any way whatsoever.

The unfortunate part is that there are sources that could have been consulted to obtain the correct information (including titles from the same publisher).

5 out of 5 stars best book out of all WOW!!!.......2007-03-16

I would write forever about how great this book is But I will do this I am looking everywhere for more books like this and I cannot find anymore. This book Is one I take to every auction and flea market Well IT stays with me all the time never know what I might come up on. This is the best book pictures are great and sooooooo HELPFULL worth a goldmind to me. I do not know how to live without it. I think because there are no more like this I am going to make a book of all my stuff . Who has time to read and read when you are on a journey of finding the treasures out there. THis book has helped me make so much money too. I await to find another book to help find plates etc etc. BUY IT worth more than what I paid.

        5 out of 5 stars PERFECT.......2007-01-05

This book is what I have been looking for for quite some time now. It gives a VERY comprehensive overview on marks from all over the world, and their usage years. If you are, like me, a seller of antiques and vintage items....need a quick reference for your research to pin down the dates? THIS IS IT! This book will NOT give you company history and prices. It will however give you the first step in identifying that piece that you found in grandma's attic years ago. Excellent photos for EVERY piece mentioned. Also, it is in alphabetical order, VERY easy maneuvering.
        5 STARS all the way!

3 out of 5 stars NICE PICTURES AND MARKS.......2006-11-07

THIS BOOK IS GOOD FOR THOSE OF YOU WANTING NICE COLOR PICTURES AND CORRESPONDING MARKS. HOWEVER, THIS IS NOT A PRICE GUIDE AND THERE'S VERY LITTLE HISTORY. IT WOULD BE HARD TO FIND YOUR MARK IN THIS BOOK.
