1 out of 5 stars Black & White.......2007-07-28

The Magic Lantern D200 guide is merely a slightly expanded version of the factory manual, it's barely bigger in size and B/W. The "bonus" quick reference card is very basic - as a D200 user you're unlikely to get any use out of the quick reference card unless you have difficulty remembering what ISO, WB, Mode etc. stand for.
The second D200 guide I've got is the Digital Field Guide. It is the better guide out of the two, but not by much. Unfortunately neither guide is very good at telling you how to get the best out of your camera.

5 out of 5 stars The "should have been the manual" guide book.......2007-07-15

Despite its grayness cover and photos, this book is clear, straight forward
and very comprehensive manual. This book is the manual that should have been
included in the kit instead what's included today.

5 out of 5 stars OK!.......2007-07-06

It was slow but was recieved on time. Book binding came loose but book still great.

4 out of 5 stars A systematic approach to D200.......2007-06-09

Hello Fellow Enthusiasts !

I ordered it before ordering for D200, the reason is to understand the features of D200 before i get my hands on the real machine.
This guide is beautifully laid out, glossy papers and very expressive with sequence of chapters very thoughtfully designed.
Since I haven't seen the similar product offering by other publishers so can't comment on others or compare. But definitely it's worth reading and understanding the camera. if you are new like me to SLR and that too D200 then don't think twice and simply order it.

Good Luck

4 out of 5 stars Magic Lantern guide for Nikon D200.......2007-06-08

This is a concise, easy to read guide for the Nikon D200. It is easier to understand than the manual that comes with the camera. My only criticism, if any, is that the index is not as comprehensive as it could be.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for this Camera.......2007-09-16

I suggest you run out and get this immediately if you are brand new to these type of cameras. I was when I got it and it helped me a lot. I wanted to just read up on my camera and everything it can do, because I'm the kind of person who just likes knowing everything about something. I learned more than I expected to and the author is very down to Earth and easy to understand. He phrases things the way a normal, casual photographer will understand.
I realize that the book's not perfect if you're already knowledgeable about DSLRs and you probably will outgrow this book as you become more and more experienced with your camera, but this is a great jumping off point for someone who wants more than the manual, but who doesn't want a book on digital photography in general.
The book is thorough, enjoyable and educational.

1 out of 5 stars Magic Lantern Reviews Confuse.......2007-08-25

Hi All:

I am not reviewing the book itself, but the reviews offered here about the book. The first review highlighting Rob Sheppard and Lightroom is Fantastic - giving top review and all other reviews afterwards give extremely poor reviews of same product. Very confusing so decided not to get Magic Lantern book.

1 out of 5 stars The 30D manual is better and free.......2007-07-02

This book is a huge disappointment. Why are you thinking of spending $15 for a supplemental manual? If you're like me you want something that goes beyond the camera manual, a second resource that explains your new camera in more detail than the often abbreviated explanations in most manufacturer manuals. This book fails miserably.

First, the camera manual is much better organized. This guide wanders and meanders, the author repeats information and appears to be trying to pad the length of his guide to make it more impressive. He has two sections that repeat the same information about 30D file formats. He has three sections that repeat the same information about the LCD display, probably one of the simplest and most self explanatory parts of the camera. Other examples of redundancy abound throughout the book.

Second, the manual is actually more explicit than this book for many camera functions. In the section about histograms on the display the manual has an illustration, this book's author relies on pure verbal descriptions. In the section on manual focus he tells the reader to use the exposure meter system without any kind of illustration to explain what the meter is how it operates. The camera manual has a picture of the exposure meter and specific details about how it works.

Third, when the author does seem to be going beyond the manual he stays annoyingly vague. For example, when discussing the two types of tripod heads he only says they differ but doesn't say HOW they differ or what the advantages and disadvantages of each are. When talking about high speed flash synchronization he says that some flashes can operate with shutter speeds above the 1/250 second limit, but he doesn't explain how you can accomplish this.

Fourth, the book is full of unremarkable photos that poorly illustrate what the author is saying. Pictures of the camera lack any kind of pointers to specifically show what button or feature he is talking about. One picture illustrating fill flash doesn't show with and without comparisons to show the reader what fill flash can do. Some pictures simply don't have anything to do with the caption beneath it. One picture is supposed to illustrate the continuous 5 frame/sec shooting mode. But the picture is of an SUV driving down a dusty road...how does that illustrate the camera's feature? The printing resolution and detail is so poor that most of the pictures look amateurish or just bad.

Finally, in many instances the author simply rephrases information from the manual without adding anything new. He spends 8 pages detailing the custom functions available but each one is an almost literal copy of the manual, differing only in a few verbs or adjective used.

Don't buy this book. It won't provide you with any information that isn't in the manual and the information it does present is poorly organized.

5 out of 5 stars Love Magic Lantern Guides!!!!.......2007-05-09

I have never been disappointed in a Magic Lantern Guides book!! This one, like the others, is chock full of information and very, very helpful!! There is no doubt in my mind, unless you know all there is to know
about cameras, you will love this handy, informative book!!! I use it often and love it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Learning Guide.......2007-01-09

This book has been very helpful in understanding the digital "lingo" and how the features work. I have been an SLR user 30 years and finally made the move to digital by purchasing a Canon 20D. There were a lot of features that I didn't understand and the manual that came with the camera wasn't very clear. This book helped clear the fog around things like white balance, which is totally new for a former film user. I've been able to figure out why some of my photos have not come out like I expected and know how to correct them and not make the same mistake in the future. This book is a great investment for those who are new to the digital world.

5 out of 5 stars New Owner of Canon 20D.......2007-01-03

I use this reference almost daily. Very easy to read and understand. Canon should cut a deal with Magic Lantern Guides and include with all sales. I recently upgraded from the Canon Rebel and used the Rebel guide for that camera as well.

4 out of 5 stars Nice little book.......2006-11-10

If you are a begginer that's a good book, it goes deeper into the effects of different settings than the instructions that comes with the camera, and shows samples of pictures at different settings. If you know how to use and the effect of different values for complicated settings such as white balance and others, you don't need this book.
I would also like to add that the book comes with a nice pocket guide to some settings of the 20D camera.

4 out of 5 stars Not giving any exercises.......2006-07-22

don have any this to sy this book is the same as the manual
i think if it has some exercis it would be much batter..

4 out of 5 stars Met expectations.......2006-06-29

Provided good supplemental information to the Canon book that came with my camera. This is what I was looking for.

Great book with a lot of information. I have a Maxxum 5D but the book still applies to my camera.

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative!.......2006-07-14

This book is not only more detailed and informative than the documentation that came with the camera, it helped me understand the differences between digital and film photography. I now see digital photography as an art form in it's own right, and I can't wait to embark on this new journey.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Work on an Excellent Camera!.......2006-06-27

The Konica-Minolta Maxxum 7D or Dynax 7D was a groundbreaking camera from a groundbreaking firm. This volume will give you everything you need, by way of information and diograms to smoothly master this Legendary Camera.

Magic Latern is well known as an excellent source of information...and this work, by Peter K. Burian, is well written and well conceived.

I would recommend it along with The PIP Expanded Guide to the Maxxum / Dynax 7D by Chris Weston.

5 out of 5 stars Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D/Dynax 7D .......2006-05-22

This book is very good. A lot more info than the instructions that came with the camera. Helps you understand the functions and how to operate your new camera. This book is a must for using your new Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D/Dynax 7D.

4 out of 5 stars Real Value-added .......2005-10-19

Definitely goes beyond the owners manual providing useful perspective on how to get more out of the numerous controls and customizing options for this fine camera. Also a useful guide for improving your photos.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Definitive Work!.......2001-06-01

A definitive work on the subject of American made lanterns. A wonderful documentation of the history, contribution and technological progress of lanterns in the United States. An engaging photographic investigation of companies, people, places, uses and prices of kerosene lanterns from 1830 to the present. Contains a wonderful restoration chapter with great hints. It is safe to say that it is a complete treatment.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Lanterns.......1999-12-03

Of all my books on lantern collecting, this is the one that I would recommend most highly for the beginning or advanced collector alike. It covers a number of lanterns from different manufacturers with great pictures and thorough, accurate descriptions. It also gives the history of the different major manufacturers, restoration tips, and a priceguide. While it does not cover every lantern made, it does not pretend to. It instead educates the reader, so that he/she may age (by construction methods and lantern chacteristics), and determine value of the lantern without the need of reference. In my opinion, you can not go wrong with this book. Mine is dog earred from being read so many times. This is a "must have" for the lantern collector.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book with beautiful photographs & USEFUL PRICES.......1998-08-31

Author Dennis Pearson has written a wonderful book that not only gives the history of the kerosene (and precursor fuels) lantern, but is filled with some 200 photographs and illustrations of lanterns past and present. The color photographs are simply superb. These are not snapshots of lanterns, they are studio-lit celebrations of the lantern of the quality you would expect to see in a magazine ad. Pearson's work concentrates on the barn lantern, but the major types and manufacturers of railroad lanterns, as well as other types, are also presented with the author himself pointing out that a number of books have already been written concentrating on the railroad lantern. If you're looking for the details that will help you date a lantern they are here, but you may have to do some page flipping, as a single model of lantern may have been made over such a long time that it spans the author's dividing lines: all solder construction, machine and solder construction, and all machine construction. There are chapters on how to date a lantern, the operation of lanterns, and restoring old lanterns. Finally, Pearson gives a "lantern value calculator" that enables you to calculate the rough value of any lantern, and a price guide to some 130 lanterns, including the more common railroad types and some foreign lanterns. Unlike some other books of this type, Pearson's prices seem to match pretty closely with the real world. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in kerosene lanterns.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars One Size Fits all... Almost........2000-06-20

The book includes a brief history of the company that made the classic, and some say, best cameras to come out of the 1960's. A sincere attempt to provide detailed coverage of the Spotmatic, K, M and finally, LX series of cameras is moderately successful for those who are familiar with these cameras. A good portion of the book is given over to general photography concepts and techniques. This provides a good refresher course and a handy reference. In many instances, tie-ins are made with various Pentax models, and overall, Pentax owners will find this book very useful. Collectors with considerable experience, both in making pictures and with these cameras will, however, be disappointed by the broad strokes used to describe the details of individual models. Many details, important to serious collectors and those making purchasing decisions, are overlooked. For example, the Spotmatic II is described merely as a Spotmatic with a hot shoe. Significant differences exist and are ignored. If you need every book written about the early TTL SLR Pentax cameras, then this book is a "must-have". If you need a book that is useful from a general standpoint and discusses early Pentax cameras too, this book comes with a good recommendation. If however, you want a definitive work about one of the most influential camera manufacturers and their products, you will do well to look elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars Overpriced book..............2006-12-09

Konica Minolta 5D is no longer in production so finding this book will be getting harder. Fortunately I brought mine's on a sale rack. Overall, I would say that reading this book is so much easier then reading the instruction booklet. The book reads well and explained how 5D work and why. Its well written so I was able to get a faster grasp of 5D then I would have reading the instruction booklet that came with the camera. However, it doesn't add much more to the instruction booklet and it definitely not worth the $13.95 that Amazon is asking for.

One thing I find bit puzzling is why all the photos in these books are in black and white. Why bother with b/w when explaining color shots?? Yes it cheaper to produced the book in b/w but that will defeat the purpose of such a book.

If you can get it super cheap around the same time that you brought Minolta 5D like I did, it well worth reading it since its superior to the instruction booklet that come with the camera. However, if you are already an long time 5D user, this book will offered little or no insights into the 5D that you don't already know. If you can get it super cheap, it might be an semi-useful reference guide. It also might go well if you decide to sell your 5D some day and add this book with the camera.

Otherwise, this book serves very little purpose for anything else.

3 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2006-05-18

I was looking for a "how-to and why" book with step by step instructions on using the 5D and this book did not measure up to my expectation. A good marketing sales book for Minolta.

2 out of 5 stars Very generic " Guide ".......2005-09-13

The book was written before the camera was even in production. It uses this aa a reason for not completely explaining anything.
More than 50% of the book is basic photographic technique, not specific N70 operation. The owners manual you can download on the net for free is more usefull.

5 out of 5 stars nikon n70 magic lantern guide.......2005-09-10

Very conplete information and illistrutions on my camera. I have three other magic lantern guides for my other nikons.

4 out of 5 stars Good Supplement.......2004-06-01

I purchased the book to go with an used N70 I bought. The camera did not come with a manual, so the this book is helpful. The book does a good job of explaining all the functions. It did cover the LCD readout on the top of the camera, but it did not explain all of the icons in the view finder. For example, the first icon is a focus assist (circle between two arrows). The circle and arrows blink as you adjust the focus on a manual lens. I would not have known what these icons where for if I hadn't located a manual on-line. This may not be an issue for an auto-focus lens.

5 out of 5 stars Great as a Manual.......2003-08-04

When I received my N70, it was at a school auction, and I purchased it for $..., without the manual. I was ecstatic at the deal that I got. It wasn't till I got some film in it that I realized it was a mixed blessing. Yes, the camera was great, and being an armature photographer helped me decipher some of what was on the camera, however there were depictions on the screen that I had no clue as to their meanings.

Enter the Magic Lantern Guides... when I found this gem at the bookstore, I knew it was what I wanted. Since I was not in a real hurry to obtain it, and it was cheaper here, I purchased it here with other books. This by far has been the most helpful. Not only does it tell you what all the buttons do, but it does give some useful tips on how to make better pictures.

4 out of 5 stars A must for N70 owners........2002-03-06

In short this is a must have book if you own an N70. This little gem takes you through photographic basics and how they apply to the N70 and it's functions.

3 out of 5 stars Nice guide for a novice Pentax owner.......2002-02-11

I bought this book hoping for information specific to my camera (ZX-M) with tips on photography in general. Spending a couple of hours on photo.net and reading a book by Lee Frost provided far more useful information than is contained in this book. The manual that came with the camera does a very good job educating the user on the various functions of the camera. There were some useful tips on using flash and understanding the metering system. If you are a complete novice this will be a very useful book for you. If you are a complete novice and have spent some time doing research before purchasing your camera this will not be as useful. If you are an experienced amateur this book will be of very little use.

2 out of 5 stars Not enough camera-specific information.......2000-04-07

I bought this book hoping it would be full of specificinformation on my Pentax ZX-M. Unfortunately, I found it consisted ofonly one chapter on my camera, one on the older K1000 (as advertised), and the rest general tips that you could read about in much more detail in a book like Grimm et al.'s Basic Book of Photography or Adams' series. I wanted information on lenses in the Pentax system, how my specific flash unit worked best, etc. Buy this book only if you're looking to complete your photo library and have extra $ you don't want to spend on film.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for the advanced amateur / Pro.......2005-10-26

I own numerous Nikon cameras. This book is great as a quick reference, and for ideas on how to handle exposure for various situations most photographers don't experience. It has great tables and such.

I didn't find much in this reference confusing. I read books on photography, plus various magazines.

This is one of two small references I carry with me in my bag when I'm shooting. The second, I got at the Nikon School.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT book for NIKON enthusiasts!.......2005-01-13

This is a GREAT book for Nikon enthusiasts. There are several caveats that the reader should be aware of which, unfortunately, several of the previous reviewers were not. First and foremost, the back jacket of the book states clearly that CAMERA information is aimed at users of the F100 (one reviewer states it doesn't cover the F100 but this edition DOES cover it from page 232-251), N60/F60, F5, F6, N90s/F90X and FM2n models. Second, this 2nd edition was published in 2000 and though Mr. Hogan would love to update it with a 3rd edition, he doesn't own the rights and the publishing company that does own them has gone bankrupt, making the rights currently unavailable, which is why it is now out-of-print and probably won't be available other than on the used market so get one when you can!!!

As for the reviewer who complains...
"The author has given no creedence(sp) to readers who havn't(sp) invested heavily in purely Nikon gear such as lenses and flash units. Descriptions of shooting scenarios are too concise and again apply specifically to all Nikon apparatus."
the title of the book IS, after all, "THE NIKON FIELD GUIDE" so of course it applies "specifically" Nikon equipment.

This book also extensively covers Nikon/Nikkor lenses, Nikon Speedlight models SB-25, -26, -27, -28 as well as basic flash/lighting techniques, general shooting tips, filters, outdoor and wildlife techniques and macro photography. Plus it contains exposure guides, short cuts and very useful photography-related equation charts such as the Sunny 16 rule, Exposure Value (EV), Hyperfocal distance, Depth of Field and more.

As I stated above, this is THE book for Nikon enthusiasts as besides the detailed instructions for the cameras and flash units listed, it also contains a wealth of photography ideas and information. If you find a used copy of this book, BUY IT! It is well worth it!!!

1 out of 5 stars The Nikon Field Guide.......2002-02-05

As an amateur photographer I found the book to be pretty much a complete waste of time. The author has given no creedence to readers who havn't invested heavily in purely Nikon gear such as lenses and flash units. Descriptions of shooting scenarios are too concise and again apply specifically to all Nikon apparatus.

I would have found it more useful if the author had concentrated his advice with information specifically on how to get best use out of the functions available on the camera body itself i.e. Aperature & shutter priority modes when shooting in different conditions. I found the glossary of camera's which takes up a good 100/150 pages to the rear of the book a waste as all this information is copied direct from the user manual of the associated camera's as anyone with the camera's reviewed will know.

All in all a very dissappointing read and one which I now never refer to.

4 out of 5 stars Looks good but ensure that the equipment you own is covered.......2002-01-05

So far, the book looks like a great buy. However, I was sorely disappointed after purchasing it, it did not cover the Nikon N80 body which I had just bought. It covers in great detail the most popular but not all Nikon cameras/flashes. If you are thinking of buying this book, look at the sample pages (index) to ensure that it covers your camera!!!

4 out of 5 stars A very informative book.......2001-08-15

This is a very informative and concise book, and packed with very useful technical and practical details and hints about filters, Nikon lenses, flashes, cameras and shooting tips.

I could have rated it 5* if it covered F100, the camera I like most. Some people may find the technical information overwhelming which is a minor problem. For those of you invested in Nikon equipment, this is a very useful reference book.
