3 out of 5 stars mauser: military rifles of the world........2007-09-27

There are more pictures in this edition than the 3rd but I feel the 3rd edition had more details that are missing in the 4th edition. Like the Spanish FR-7 and FR-8, there are details and differences that are addressed in the 3rd edition of these 2 rifles that are omitted in the 4th. It is a nice general review of the mausers.

5 out of 5 stars Mauser Military Rifles of the World 4th Ed........2007-01-16

This is the best edition Yet! Great color photos and detail. Very well laid out by country. This makes it so easy to find what you are looking for. A thorough reference work on the Mauser rifle. If you are a bolt action collector or shooter, then this is a core book that should be in your library. If I could have only one book on Mauser bolt guns, then this is it. Hats off to Mr. Ball!

4 out of 5 stars Much Improved 4th Edition.......2007-01-02

The 4th Edition is much improved over previous editions. It's impossible to have a book to cater to all collectors, everyone has there own tastes. For what it's worth so far I've noticed that most of the innacurate information has been weeded out. It doesn't give as much detailed information as I would like, but for a basic treatise on mauser rifles it's darn good

5 out of 5 stars Gotta have this one........2007-02-10

I didn't know anything about Japanese Military rifles from WWII. The internet quickly lead me to this book as the most practical guide. It is. You can quickly get your knowledge base up to speed. I use it as a reference now. It's decently laid out with most of the information you need.

I used a Japanese Type 44 Carbine and Hornady Ammo to shoot a doe last week. I think Japanese Rifles, available now at gunshows for 200.00 or less, are going to increase rapidly in value. I was surprised at how well they shot. Nice to have this book as a guide.

4 out of 5 stars the arisaka manual for collectors.......2005-09-25

This is an excellent book for collectors who are gonna identify any japanese rifle producted between 1905 and 1945.
There is a large range of pictures and images which help the reader to understand all the marks of production of any arsenal.
Unfortunately informations about Arisaka rifles are narrow , because all the documents about the production of those rifles was destructed under the bombings during the war.
There is nothing better for a collector approaching to japanese rifles.

Book Description

At the start of World War II, Great Britain was badly under armed. The disastrous campaigns in France in 1940 which resulted in the massive evacuation under fire of British and Allied troops from the beaches of Dunkirk and Calais further depleted her inventory of arms. Massive shipments of military arms from the U.S. Government and sporting arms from private American citizens helped to ease the situation somewhat, but it was the amazing production program that the British had put into effect as early as September 1939 that saved the British Army.

In the first few years of the war, the tired old Lee-Enfield Mk I and Mk III carried the brunt of infantry fighting. Most of these rifles had been built before 1918 and were wearing out quickly. In the 1920s, the British army had begun development of a new, easier-to-manufacture version of the bolt action Lee-Enfield. The result was the Mk V with its receiver sight and stiffer barrel. Some 20,000 were produced for trials but then the labor governments of the late 1920s and early 1930s saw no reason to continue the development of armaments. Hadn't the League of Nations promised to settle all future international disputes?

But in 1939, as Hitler's Germany was crushing Poland, a crash development program was instituted to put the Mk V Enfield into production was begun to make up for lost years. By 1941, the new rifle by now rechristened the No. 4 Enfield was pouring out of factories around the country. Production was begun also in Canada and in the United States.

The new rifle was equipped with an improved receiver rear sight that brought the aperture nearer the eye and improved the solider's marksmanship. The heavy nose cap was gone, replaced by a lighter band with protective ears to guard the front sight. The long Pattern 1914 bayonet had been replaced by a short spike useful for guarding prisoners and little else an implicit recognition that the static, trench-oriented warfare was gone forever, replaced by maneuver warfare spearheaded by mobile columns of armor and infantry. A new, stiffer barrel was installed to improve the rifle's accuracy. Otherwise, it remained remarkably similar to its earlier incarnations.

The No. 4 Enfield was produced in a wide number of variations, most having to do with ways to cut production costs and time. The rifles poured out of the factories and were shipped to the soldiers in the front lines and training camps as fast they could be made. The No. 4 provided excellent service in the British tommy's hands from the Arctic Circle to the North African Desert to the steamy jungles of Burma.

As the rifle production program began, the British Army, impressed by the havoc wrought against the Red army by Finnish snipers in the Winter War of 1939-40, also began development of a new sniper rifle. The private firearms firm of Holland and Holland, famous for the sporting rifles and shotguns, developed a sturdy mounting system for the 32 Telescopic Sight and the No. 4 Mk I (T) was born. This rifle in the hands of British snipers in the regular Army and in such special warfare units as the Secret Air Service and the Commandos, inflicted casualties and havoc on Axis troops far beyond their number.

In 1944, it became clear that a smaller, lighter rifle was needed for combat in the heavy jungles of Southeast Asia. A team of Enfield engineers stripped the No. 4 rifle to its essentials, shortened the barrel and developed a flash-hider to shield the soldier from the heavy muzzle concussion and flash, and added a padded butt plate. The No. 5 rifle popularly known as the British Enfield Jungle Carbine served well during the remainder of World War II and through the communist insurgencies that plagued Southeast Asia during the early Cold War years.

"The British Enfield, Vol 2., The No. 4 and 5 Rifles," continues Charles R. Stratton's excellent series on British rifles of the 20th Century. The No. 4 and No. 5 rifles are dissected wit

4 out of 5 stars No. 4 mark I Lee Enfield rifle.......2007-05-31

Having used this rifle as a cadet back in the mid-seventies, and also as a member of the shooting team at school, the book held strong memories for me. But more importantly, it helped me to identify the recent purchase of a No.4 Mark I/2. The book is easy to read, I would have preferred more photos and diagrams because those unfamiliar with the rifle, may find discriptions difficult to follow. For the collector, this book is a must, to add to the others in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Lee Enfield Rifle Information.......2007-03-13

For anyone who owns a No.4 or No.5 Enfield this book is invaluable. Very well written with lots of easy to understand drawings and detail. This is the place to start if you are interested in the history or in working on one of these great rifles. I found more information in this one book then I did in a couple of months of online research.

    A nineteenth-century Band of Brothers

The 95th Rifles was one of history's great fighting units, and Mark Urban brings them and the Napoleonic War gloriously to life in this unique chronicle. Focusing especially on six soldiers in the first battalion, Urban tells the Rifles’ story from May 25, 1809, when they shipped out to join Wellington’s army in Spain, through the battle of Waterloo in June 1815. Drawing on diaries, letters, and other personal accounts, Urban has fashioned a vivid narrative that allows readers to feel the thrill and horror of famous battles, the hardship of the march across Europe, the bravery and camaraderie of a nineteenthcentury Band of Brothers whose innovative tactics created the modern notion of infantryman.

5 out of 5 stars Almost as Exiting as a Richard Sharpe Novel!.......2007-10-04

This is a pacey history of the 95th Rifle Battalion from the commencement of their Peninsular Campaign through to the final climatic Battle of Waterloo. The Author draws on Letters etc from a number of Officers & other ranks to add a personal feel for the times.
Great battle descriptions & some very enlightening information on "Black Bob" the commander of the Light Division.
I would recommend this book to all history fans of the Napoleonic War & of the Sharpe TV & Book series.

    4 out of 5 stars Wellington's Rifles.......2007-01-06

This is a really good read! Granted I'm a Napoleonic buff, but this is the second book I've read by Mark Urban (The Man Who Broke Napoleon's Codes). I'm really impressed by the readability and detail of his work, and that does not always go together in non-fiction.

    5 out of 5 stars A Rifleman's View of the Peninsular War.......2006-11-13

Mark Urban's excellent "Wellington's Rifles" is an innovative history of the 95th Rifle Regiment and especially of its first battalion duirng 1809-1814 in the Peninsular War. Urban's comprehensive research into the memoires, diaries, and letters of members of the regiment during its time in Portugal and Spain has produced an account told from the point of view of the riflemen themselves. This account is very much analogous to Stephen Ambrose's "Band of Brothers" in exploring not only the battle history of the unit but also its internal chemistry and why it was consistently such an effective unit.

Urban paints an honest, warts and all picture of the First Battalion of the 95th. We meet its officers and soldiers under the best and worst of conditions, and find that the Rifles were composed of very normal human beings made into a nearly unbreakable unit by tough but effective training, good leadership, and a well-founded sense that they were special. At the same time, they were prone to the same challenges and temptations as other units. The 95th suffered hunger and cold at the distant end of supply lines, endured incredible marches over the primitive roads of Iberia, survived sometimes horrific wounds on the battlefield, and participated in less than honorable events such as the pillaging that followed the storming of Badajoz in 1812. Urban focuses on several individuals who served for extended periods in the Peninsular War, providing a thread of continuity through the account.

The 95th represented a departure from the standard tactics of the era, of units maneuvering and firing in mass. The Rifles were trained to fight in extended order as light infantry and were issued the Baker Rifle, which made them deadly effective individual sharpshooters at much greater range than their infantry counterparts. As Urban makes clear in his epilogue, the Rifles were the precusor to the modern infantry units of the British and American armies.

This book is very highly recommended to students of the history of the British Army and to students of the military art.

4 out of 5 stars The Real Riflemen.......2006-11-02

Having read just about every Sharpe book by Bernard Cornwell, I wanted to learn about the real 95th Rifles. Mark Urban wrote a readable history of the Rifles, and throughout the book also focused on several individual Riflemem. I do wish, however, that he had drawn some maps of the battles rather than use unreadable copies of old maps.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Informative.......2006-04-19

I freely admit that I'm not some Napoleonic expert who keeps a sabre next to my desk & a shako on my mantle. I've been a fan of Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series for years. I kept meaning to start reading books on the actual Peninsula Campaign and it just so happens this is the first book. That was great luck because this book is wonderful.
Mark Urban keeps the focus extremely narrow. He talks about the Rifle's involvement in the Peninsula and Waterloo and not much else. Huge battles and huge sections of battles are ignored because the 95th just wasn't there. This almost obessive focus results in undiluted information. You get a sense of what it was really like to serve & fight based on great research and fantastic writing. The way he tracked certain personalities across the years gave the book a "story" to hang it's information from. It all worked out to be an enjoyable read that was just dripping with good information.
The reality of the 95th's existence was as interesting, if not more so, than Cornwell's Sharpe. If you're a fan, you need to read this.

    Book Description

The Russian word that is most frequently spoken throughout the world isn't Lenin, gulag or perestroika, itrsquo;s lsquo;Kalashnikovrsquo;. The reason for this is simple: there are 80 million Kalashnikovs in circulation on five continents. Once invented, the AK-47 assault rifle became the most widely used weapon in the world: from Vietnam to Palestine, from Cuba to Iraq, it was at the heart of conflicts and struggles everywhere. It is the only firearm that has ever been depicted on a national flag ndash; that of Mozambique, where it symbolizes liberation. Mikhail Kalashnikov himself, who was born in 1919, here tells his life story, with the help of Elena Joly, for the first time: his deportation to Siberia with his family while still a child; his time as a soldier in a tank regiment; his invention of the worldrsquo;s most famous weapon and his turbulent life under Stalin, Khrushchev, Brezhnev, Gorbachev and Yeltsin. This is a remarkable portrait of a man of ingenuity and vitality in the context of the often frightening and terribly unforgiving Russia of the twentieth century.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Story of a Life in Russia.......2007-01-10

The title of this book is somewhat misleading. It's not a book about the Gun that changed the world, but about the designer of the gun that changed the world. It's basically composed of discussions with Mikhail Kalashnikov.

We see a lot of biographies of people in the US or England. We don't see much of people who were born in Stalinist Russia before World War II, was sent to the Gulag with his family, was wounded in battle and wound up receiving awards from the president of Russia. It's a story of life in a society so far from what we know that it is difficult to imagine.

Interspersed throughout the book are comments on the AK-47. But comments about how a change was made in the design of the breechblock are just as frequent as comments about the impact of the gun on the world scene. There are other books that cover the gun better than this one. But this is the story of the man behind the gun, and it's a fascinating story.

3 out of 5 stars Good bookstore read..........2007-01-02

Although, I only came upon this book by chance, and read it out of curiosity, I can see it falling short of the expectations of those who are serious firearms or military enthusiasts. Despite the title, this book is less a story of the AK-47, and more the story of its designer, Mikhail Kalashnikov. It follows him from his childhood during which he and his family were expelled to the fringes of Soviet civilization, through his service during World War II, and finally life surrounding his work as a weapons designer. As it is written in first-person based on interviews with Kalashnikov, the narration seems only loosely edited and has a tendancy to go astray in presenting the inventor's views on politics, people he likes and dislikes, and his constant humble reminders of the honors bestowed upon him for his design. While I found all of this fascinating, the relatively short length (150 pages) leaves the AK-47 as little more than an afterthought in context to the other events of Kalashnikov's life.
The book also has a tendancy to repeat Kalashnikov's tiresome disclaimer that he has never actually seen any royalties from sales of his weapon (he never applied for a patent), nor does he endorse the ubiquitous nature of the AK-47 as the weapon of choice for terrorist organizations.
Overall, this is a compelling and quick read for those with any interest in one of the finest weapons in military history, but its content and narration may be more suitable for a television program.

This book makes for excellent reference material for those thinking of investing in a great rifle or simply enthusiastic about the art of rifles today.Exhaustive gun list covering most commercial rifles of today and yesterday without wasting too many pages on worthless ballistic charts.Highly recommended reference for hunters, competitive shooters, collectors or simply gun enthusiasts.

    Book Description

This volume examines one of the outstanding successes in small-arms history. From the first gun designed by a convalescing Red Army sergeant in 1941, to mass production and use by a vast number of armed forces throughout the world, this is the complete story of Kalashnikov. The prototype was developed into the AK-47 by 1949, and by the 1950s the Kalashnikov had achieved runaway success based on simplicity and reliability. This superbly illustrated gun-by-gun directory identifies individual Kalashnikov variants and types, and includes details of sights, bayonets and ammunition.

3 out of 5 stars book has much erroneous information, lacks indepth research.......1999-07-24

Walter's book on the Kalashnikov rifle started with a good premise-to catalog the many different variations of the AK family among it's 70 million produced weapons. The book falls far short of Masami Tokoi's masterpiece and classic reference work"AK-47 & KALASHNIKOV VARIATIONS." and is still inferior to Kalashnikov arms own catalog on the subject. Many of the entries were incomplete or glossed over, and there were glaring omissions of numerous variations. Additionally many of the photos were improperly captioned, giving one the impression that the author really doesn't know his subject matter very well. for the low price an o.k. book, for serious reference work very poor.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best book on H&K firearms.......2007-06-14

There are a lot of typos and misidentifed photographs in this book, which is all the more annoying as it could have been a better book than it is. Project 64 is still the pinnacle of books written exclusively about Heckler & Koch's line of firearms.
