Great 3rd series book.......2006-04-10
I really have enjoyed this series. the characters are well thought out and it is a captivating tale.
Will definetly purchase more in the future, I also recommend her books wrote under the name of India Ink.
Murder Under a Mystic Moon.......2006-02-07
After loving the first two entries in the series, I found this one lacking. First, where was the 'chitz and china'...? Emerald, whose, um, excuse the expression 'redneck' side seems to be increasingly emerging... needs to return to the shop! I found this tome a bit rambling, seemingly not as well conceptualized as former entries and therefore not as well executed or as compelling. It also begins to seem we're seeing way too much of the boyfriend, who's pretty predictable and isn't a terribly interesting or well-developed character... I was also disheartened that the writer brought in one new and one returning character only to see them dropped without any real significance to the plot... One 'donated' a crystal ball that also hardly figured in the plot and the other was an old boyfriend who appeared briefly, and then was never heard of again... What was that about? Here's hoping future chintz and china mysteries are more akin to the first two than to this one... I just picked up the 4th in the series, so I guess I'll see!
Murder Under a Mystic Moon.......2005-09-25
Again, a fine story. I want to keep knowing what happens next.
evil lurks ..........2005-04-22
3rd in the Chintz'N China series featuring Emerald O'Brien, this is a series I buy off the shelf. Emerald, a medium, is a down-to-earth single mom raising her nerdy, star-gazing daughter and precocious son, who is also a medium while trying to run her china/tea shop where she also gives Tarot readings. Emerald gets drawn into the investigation of a body found in the woods when her friend asks her to check it out for anything supernatural. Emerald and her friends - and family - end up stumbling across a much greater mystery than anyone can imagine, while also laying the groundwork for future stories. Most of you know how much I love my psychic stories, and this author is one of my favorites in the paranormal mysteries. She can't seem to write quickly enough for me. The first 2 are Ghost of a Chance and Legend of the Jade Dragon. December will bring us A Harvest a Bones.
it was alright.......2005-02-20
I wouldn't say that this is the best installment yet, but it was pretty entertaining...but probably not for the reasons you think.
After finishing my reading of this novel I realized something about the Chintz 'n China mysteries....they're not really about the mystery, they're about the characters. To be honest, the characters are the only reason I enjoyed this book. I didn't really care about the Klakatat monster or even the murder "mystery" (which falls flat on its face, by the way).
Now, I have to complain about the sex scenes again. They were just a bit too graphic and they seemed out of place in a novel like this. I don't know about the other readers, but I really don't care about Emerald's sex life. Now, don't get me wrong; I'm not uptight about this stuff. I've read novels (Michael Cunningham's come to mind) which can be very graphic in that department, but at least those kinds of scenes belonged there and went right along with character development. In the Chintz 'n China novels, they're just an annoying distraction.
All in all, don't expect a good (or even decent) mystery, but read it for the characters. Some stuff is even left unexplained: Like, what happened to Jimbo's fence?
The fourth book is titled 'A Harvest of Bones' and is due out December 2005.

decent read.......2007-03-14
This is the 1st book in the series I have read, and I will read another. However, although there is some mystery to this book, there is a lot of paranormal stuff too. I am not into seances and ghosts, but it is different, if you are looking for different. I will definitely give another book in this series a chance.
Disappointing........2007-02-20
I'm a big fan of paranormal romances, but this one fell flat. The main character, Emerald O'Brien, a single mother who owns a tea room and can see ghosts, SOUNDS interesting, but isn't. Her character is just too much single-Mom dealing with kids with growing pains, and not enough mystery-solving psychic. The other characters aren't well-developed or fully-formed, and I couldn't develop any real interest -- or belief -- in any of them. The Plot didn't hold my interest either. I think the author tried to do too many things in one story and, as a result, didn't do any of them very well.
More Paranormal Than Mystery.......2006-11-05
Not a bad story, but readers should know up front that this is a book primarily about the paranormal, and not a cozy mystery as the name of the book might lead one to believe.
Also, while the author obviously wants to make points about how a divorced mother needs to approach dating, the misgivings that the protagonist has toward her suitor -- while furthering the understanding that the protagonist is a woman who always puts her kids first -- has the (I hope) unintended side effect of making the reader feel like the suitor is creepy. In a book where good and evil are so clearly delineated, it's unfortunate that one of the main characters comes off as ominous and naggingly "there's something not right about this guy."
Awesome series!.......2006-08-09
First in the Emerald O'Brian Chintz n China Mysteries and it grabs you from the beginning. If you like a little fright with your mystery, you will love this series. This book got me hooked and made me crave more Emerald adventures and a nice hot cup of tea!
A Working Single Mom Running a Successful Business, Solving Murders, and Battling Ghoulies.......2006-05-30
As if a main character named Emerald O'Brien isn't intriguing enough. Emerald O'Brien is a working single mom who's getting used to raising her two children without much support from their father (her ex-husband). She owns her own tea shop where she also provides warm meals and tarot readings. She also sees dead people, but she's okay with that. Until one night a woman appears to tell her that she'd been murdered by her husband. The next morning, Emerald reads that a local romance novelist died of natural causes. Emerald enlists the help of her children, her best friends, and a new (and of course single man) friend. They battle live murderers, paranormal ghoulies, and a busy Christmas shopping season in an entertaining and sometimes downright scary read. Think twice before reading this one in bed! A fun read. I'm looking forward to more Chintz & China Mysteries!

The best in the series so far!!.......2007-07-31
I can't wait until the next book in the series! It is a page turner.
Wonderful Wrap-up.......2006-10-29
This was the most delicious final book in her series. I loved the way everything came together at the end, and the darker tone was perfect.
Read the entire series -- it's a definate winner!
Very satisfying!.......2006-10-27
I am pleased to write that this offering in the C 'n C series completely exceeded my expectations...and more importantly, made me anxious for more. Ms. Galenorn has allowed the main character, Emerald, to grow into a more realistic 21st century powerful pagan. The previous novels had left me just a bit annoyed with Emerald's somewhat self-centered personality. "One Hex of a Wedding", though, offered some credible glimpses of vulnerability and willingness to reexamine long-held opinions -- just like a real woman as she grows older and, hopefully, wiser. The cast of supporting characters is becoming more fascinating to me, and they seem to have more dimension now. Heck, I even cried at some of the truly poignant moments in the book!
If you've not read any of the previous books, this could definitely stand alone. But do yourself a favor and read the earlier four anyway. If you find yourself, like me, vaguely annoyed with Emerald O'Brien by book three, don't worry -- you'll grow to love her again in "One Hex of a Wedding", a wonderful treat of a novel.
More Emerald Please.......2006-08-14
Another great book in the Chintz & China Mystery Series. Emerald learns more about her ex-husband (and why their marriage ultimately ended) while trying to get through the wedding planner's worst nighmare that leads up to her wedding to Joe. Her maid of honor is cursed and stalked, her other bridesmaid is juggling a job and a new baby while her husband is headed off for an extended job on the road, and her daughter struggles with first love. That doesn't even include the family dynamics brought about by the wedding. Even Nanna makes an appearance. Emerald's reactions are real (why does this have to happen when I'm getting married) and fun (when a photographer tries to pair a swimsuit model with Joe for a calendar shoot). Can't wait for the next book!
One Heck of a Good Book.......2006-08-13
I have benn a long time fan of Yasmine Galenorn's books, both fiction and non-fiction. This instalment into the lives of Emerald and friends was fast and furious! Right out of chapter one she had me hooked on the fast plot and tight twists and turns of Em's wedding and Murry's freaky stalker! I love this series! The characters are well written and have developed over time. I hope this isn't the last in the series as a previous reviewer hinted at! Please write more! Well Done!

Mystery and Heart.......2006-08-03
This is the third book in the Chintz 'n China series and the characters are full of heart. From the ghosts (both human and feline) to the main character, Emerald, to her teenage daughter. Joe (Emerald's younger EMT boyfriend) has purchased the empty lot next door and Emerald takes a vacation to help him clear it out. When they uncover the foundation to a former mansion and some some ghosts and faries, they start investigating the history of the property. They have to solve a fifty year old mystery to clear the lot of the psychic briars and then remove the corporeal ones. This may be the best one of the series so far, and I can't wait to read the fourth.
Coming back for more.......2006-03-29
I just finished reading 'A Harvest of Bones' and thoroughly enjoyed it. My immediate reaction was to find out what other books the author has written around the characters. It's a good storyline - one that will keep you coming back to finish. You want to find out what happens next - How will Murray handle her new love? What's going on with the kids? Are Joe and Em going to get married? Is Joe going to become more involved in the paranormal? What about the rest of Em's friends? It's a cozy, fun read. Find out for yourself to see if you agree.
The Best One Yet.......2005-12-17
Dare I say that the fourth book in the Chintz 'n China Mystery is the best one to date? Yes, I do!
Not only does the writing flow more easily this time around, but so does the mystery. It reminds me a bit of the second book, Legend of the Jade Dragon, in that both of them are completely immersed in the mystery and that all the really "bad" things that happen are somehow tied to the mystery itself. Not to mention that one of my favorite characters, White Deer, is back in this one!
The storyline: Em finds a secret room in the lot next door. Her cat is missing right about the time that a woman ghost and her ghost cat start appearing. (Those are basically the bare bones of the story, no pun intended.)
The Good: Most of the story is actually concerned with what happened in the lot next door. Once again, the author is good at making her characters seem real to the reader, which is always a plus.
While my "bad" section below will be much longer, I want to point out that overall, this novel is very strong in both plot and characterization. I was very much into to the story and it kept me reading!
The Bad: I can't really think of anything in particular. Dividing the novel into more chapters might have made it read faster, but that wasn't really a problem with this one since it had a storyline that kept the reader interested.
The only other "bad" thing (not really bad, but annoying lets say) is that Em comes from a long line of witches (or folk magic practitioners). While a bit cliche that her Nanna's a witch who passed her this 500-year-old dagger and a journal of German/English spells, I swallowed it. But now we learn that Emerald (and, of course, her grandmother) were both born on Halloween. How cliche can we get?
Also, is Joe like the most perfect man in the world? Good looking, young, understanding, loving, caring, and so on and on. I know the author is probably trying to make her character Em happy, but come on, no one's *that* perfect!
Also (this is not really a spoiler, since it didn't happen) I think a better ending would have been Em and her kids doing a little something to honor those that have passed on (with, of course, Brigit's picture included). This was talked about earlier in the book but it never really happened.
Overall, I enjoyed this novel very much. I know it doesn't seem like it from what I just said, but I just wanted to point out little annoyances that, well, annoyed me!
The fifth book is titled 'One Hex of a Wedding' and is due out August 2006.

highly original paranormal mystery .......2005-12-07
Emerald O Brien, the owner of the Chintz `n China Tea Room in Chiqetaw, Washington is a woman at peace with herself. She is well liked by the residents, who accept the fact that she has the Sight, has two beautiful children and is madly in love with Joe, a man ten years younger than her. To convince her he wants to be with her till death, he buys the lot adjoining Em's so it will be one large property.
While they are clearing the outdoor area, they uncover a room hidden below layers of dirt. Unknowingly, they opened a portal that allows Willow the Wisps, fae creatures who bring death with them, to enter the realm. They find in a yew tree the body of a girl, Brigit who used to live in that room and her cat that traveled into the spirit world with Brigit's. Em's and Brigit's cat changed places and Em's feline is a ghost in the spirit realm while Brigit's is only visible in the mortal world as a spirit. They must perform an exorcism to cleanse the land that Joe bought and find out why Brigit has not moved on to the next plane (with her cat) if Em and her family are to have any peace. They also want their cat returned to them so Em uses her grandmother's spells in the hopes that this will happen.
A HARVEST OF BONES is a highly original paranormal mystery with a touch of romance, the perfect book to snuggle under the covers with on a cold winter's night. The heroine and her friends take on ghosts, spirits, dragons and creatures from the otherworld as an everyday natural event because Em is a magnet for psychic phenomena. Yasmine Galenorn is a great mystery writer who uses paranormal elements to add a little of the exotic to her storytelling.

Customer Reviews:
Every Dragon has a Story.......2007-07-28
#2 in the Chintz 'n China Mystery Series. Things go downhill quickly for Emerald when a man leaves her shop after a reading and is killed by a hit and run driver leaving behind a small jade Ming dragon that has been cursed and disrupts the lives of those that are in possession of it. Unfortunately, little things in this book kept distracting me from the story. Doesn't Yasmine have an editor that would point out that you don't give a school nurse your insurance card or that you don't hear the "ringing" of the dial tone, even if this is a cozy mystery shouldn't an editor still do their job?
The Second in the Chintz & China Series.......2006-06-09
This book, like the first, has both a paranormal and normal mystery that the main character needs to solve while balancing running her own business, romantic relationships, friendships, and raising two children. This book moves the series along as well. As far as the main character's personal life, this book seems to focus on a transition period.
In this book, Emerald only does one tarot reading, for a client who is hit by a hit & run driver after leaving Emerald's shop. He leaves a cursed trinket behind that turns Emerald's life upside down. While bringing back many of the characters from the first book, we meet some new ones as well.
The book is well written and very entertaining. I think the first book was better, but this one is definitely worth the read. The book is a little hard to find but worth the effort.
Think people will like this one.......2006-01-12
I was not familiar with this Author or Series when I saw
it on here and decided to take a chance on it.Received It Tuesday And started reading it Tuesday Night.Got hooked
and stayed up most of the night to finish it.Liked the main
character,Emerald 0'Brien and well as the supporting characters
and plan to read other books Yasmine has written.
Getting better all the time.......2005-11-24
This second book in the Chintz 'n' China series is even better than the first. The mystery is offbeat, Emerald is drawn into taking more chances, and the other characters each emerge as individuals in their own right. I especially enjoyed Jimbo. The book grew in tension, too, and really kept me turning the pages. A highly enjoyable second act in the series.
Legend of the Jade Dragon.......2005-09-25
She just gets better with each book. Looking forward to her other series.

Beautiful book worthy of "coffee table" presentation!.......1999-07-14
Excellent presentation on chintz pottery and ceramics without making it look like a manual. The type of book you'd want in your collection as a show piece.
A very beautiful and informative book on chintz!.......1999-07-11
This book is absolutely gorgeous. Of course, it is full of very useful information for chintz collectors. It is very educational for any one interested in learning more about chintz ceramics. However, the best thing about this book is its beauty. I just love to look at it time and time again.

"The" book on chintzware.......2006-11-27
Simply the best guide to chintz patterns and pricing. Very well researched, and the shapes and catalog pages at the back are especially helpful. I do wish the pattern photographs on each page were both larger and of better quality, though ~ that would seem a better match with the sterling quality of the rest of the book.
Susan does it yet again!.......1999-11-28
Year on year Susan updates and adds to the definitive chintz guide. A mine of priceless information. Well presented, beautifully illustrated and an absolute essential for anyone even remotely interested in chintz pottery. This third edition is a must!
A breathtaking must for anyone interested in Chintz.......1998-07-02
This is a stunningly beautiful book packed completely with beautiful photographs. For someone interested in collecting chintz, this is the absolute best thing I've found for learning about the range of patterns. That range is far more extensive than one would expect from the sparse collections of chintz at antique shops and shows. This book will fire the imagination!
