Still Scary...and fun.......2007-05-04

I purchased this book as one that I fondly remembered from childhood. I don't know for certain how many times my brother and I checked this out from the public library, but it was a lot. The stories in it are fun and the artwork is fantastic. As a matter of fact, even though I remember most of the stories from reading them before, it's the artwork that lodged this book into my head so firmly. Although all black and white, the images are spooky and gruesome. Exactly what an impressionable pre-teen needs to be sufficiently creeped out!

The stories themselves are usually 1 to 2 pages each and are still fun. While they wouldn't scare the bejeepers out of me today, I can see why I was drawn to them as a child. The last section of stories is also fun as they are in the same line as the spooky tales, but are intended to be humorous and silly.

All in all this is a fun book for kids of all ages and I really was glad that I went ahead and purchased one of my childhood favorites.

Scary Stories to tell in the dark

How would you like to be woken up by the sound of a ghost walking up the stairs toward your room? I wouldn't, but reading about it is fun. If you are a enthusiastic reader you might never get a chance to put it down. This book is full of fantasy and legends that have been passed down for years, but some of them are from recent times. A haunt, a man that is killed by a white wolf, and a priest in a church full of living dead. My personal favorite story is The Window. In this story a girl living with her brothers sees a creature that looks like a man stand up in the moonlight. Megan doesn't think it will return and goes back to sleep. Then later in the night the creature returns and closer, Megan wants to run but is afraid it will break in before she could escape. She goes back to sleep again. At about midnight Megan hears a scratching at her window, she runs but-but you will have to read the rest to find out what happens. Since the author is the most thrilling one alive these are the most thrilling stories ever to be on the face of the earth.

Book Review for Scary Stories

If you want a spine tingling book this is the one for you. The awesome book Scary Stories by Alvin Schwartz. Alvin Schwartz is the scariest author alive, from my point of view. This book is a top 10 rating because the author uses such descriptive words that I had chills running down my spine. Scary Stories is so good that I read it two times just to get every little detail out of all the stories. You should read this book because the stories are so descriptive. Some of them I wouldn¡¦t read at night.

My example of the theme is the story The Thing. The theme of this story is based on two boys that see a man with dark, ripped, muddy clothes on, in a
turnip field. The boys go up to see if it really is a man and ¡K you¡¦re going to have to read it to find out the rest.

The characters in the story are Ted Martin, Sam Miller, and The Thing. Ted and Sam were good friends. Ted¡¦s personality is a mama¡¦s boy personality. Sam is the kind of kid that will do anything. It doesn¡¦t say much about The Things personality so ill tell you what he looks like. The thing has sunk in eyes, yellow square teeth, rotting flesh, and black pants with black suspenders and a white shirt.

The setting is mostly in two places. One is on a fence by a post office. The other setting is in Ted¡¦s house hiding and the worst part is that it¡¦s dark out and everything gets scarier when it¡¦s dark out. Well I think it dose.

The story ends by¡K I don¡¦t know you will have to read the story. You have to read this book it is a bone chiller. Remember it¡¦s by Alvin Schwartz and it¡¦s called Scary Stories. Read it it¡¦s a series. ºº

Moderately Scary Stories, Highly Creepy Illustrations!.......2007-01-11

This is my first experience with Schwartz and the Scary Stories trilogy and I wasn't really sure what to expect as I actually picked this up as part of my reading list off of the American Library Association's list of most frequently challenged books (from 1990-2000). In some small way, I can see how this book (and the two others) get challenged by parents...there are some gross, gruesome, frightening, and creepy stories in this book...but (you knew it was coming...right) really, what's here, for the most part is pretty tame. For kids 8-12, this might be their first introduction to what (for most older children, adolescents and adults) are pretty standard, traditional campfire stories and urban legends. Further, they are the tamest and least embellished versions I think I've ever seen, so there is little actual gore. Probably the most frightening thing in this book are the illustrations...they are done in a style that is truly evocative of the theme...this is something that I really enjoyed about the book. Each illustration makes you squirm a bit, but then you look back and find yourself looking even more closely to pick out the details of each barely there illustration!

There are 29 stores covered in this book, all drawn (as the title indicates) from American Folklore (even some of the more contemporary ones like the hook and high beams), so it's a nice wide swath of scary folklore cut from the cloth of the American oral storytelling. In the first part of the book nearly every tale is by necessity one that should be told out loud around a campfire (as they require screaming, jumping at, or grabbing someone to "get them" at the end of the story). As the book progresses, more and more of the tales stand alone as reading material...but really each is just a bare-bones minimum of the story without any embellishments and are probably best enjoyed orally (also around a campfire or in a dark room with candles or flashlights) and embellished...having a group of kids take one story each and memorize it and tell it to the group would be a wonderful activity that Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark would lend itself to quite well!

Overall, Scary Stores to Tell in the Dark is a fine introduction to the oral tradition of folklore and urban legend. This book would make a fine addition to the library of anyone who regularly deals with kids in groups (particularly outdoors, like boy or girl scouts) and/or for group story telling...this book would provide a wonderful jumping off point for kids to learn a legend, folktale or urban legend well enough to tell out loud without reading and to encourage embellishment or discuss other versions (activity for older kids who are more familiar with the stories given and the many variations that are around). I give it four stars, as the text itself is rather uninspiring as a cover to cover, stand alone read...the illustrations are what saves it from getting three stars and as I said above, it's best use is as an introduction to folklore and/or as a way to increase one's repertoire of stores to frighten children with in those times and places where campfires, candlelight and flashlights rule the darkness!

A Funny, Scary Book.......2006-12-20

I chose this book because I think its one of the best books I've read because it's funny and scary. The author's name is Alvin Schwartz. He has written Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,
More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and Scary Stories: 3 More Tales to Chill You're Bones. I've read each of them at least three times. I think you should read this book and hopefully you'll like it as much as I do. It has a lot of short and scary stories. It is one of those books you never get bored of.

Good design book .......2007-05-13

This book is a must read for anyone taking a course in software design, or software engineers who are interested to design better software systems. The book is not for casual reading, each research paper requires a lot of effort from the reader, to understand and appreciate the depth covered in these papers. It is amazing to find Parnas papers on software engineering, has been tested by time, and has remained undisputed for the last 4 decades. I liked the following papers, criteria used for decomposing system into modules (information hiding), hierarchical software structures, design for ease of extension, program families, and software aging.

Well-Organized Review, Insightful Content........2004-01-01

I consider this book on two levels:
1. How well does it capture and present the important contributions Parnas has made to the Software Engineering discipline?
2. Is the content (i.e. Parnas' papers) useful?

This book does a beautiful job of collecting and organizing Parnas' papers. Each paper is preceeded by an introduction from a peer or other recognized prominent computer scientist. Almost all of these introductions are insightful in themselves: they help create a context for the essay which made it easier for me to fill in the gaps. Almost all of the contributors' writting styles are lucid and easy to read. I found reading through this book quite enjoyable.

Parnas' contributions are critical, no doubt. The concept of Information Hiding as a criteria for modular decomposition really helped form modern "object-oriented" thinking. It seems to me that returning to the first well-formed idea can often grant insights into how to be more effective with its offspring. Indeed, Chapter 7 in this text is essentially a primer on how to think in object-oriented terms.

You'll not find a passage that reads, "now here's an example of that in Java/C#/C++" But that's the blessing: Parnas communicates the essence of the principles that yield quality software engineering without getting lost in unnecessary details. The fact that some of these papers were written 30 years ago helps bring home the fact that novel ideas are rare.

One aspect of 30 year-old writtings that may be a stumbling block for similarly aged programmers is that these works live in an iron world: where programs lived very close to their hardware. Parnas uses phrases like "4 bytes packed in a word" and "core" that seem primal (not to say that some folks aren't concerned with word-sizes and which endian, just that the overall percentage is much lower). For some, this may seem to be a waste of time to try to understand. I encourage the reader to ferret out the bigger message...the more abstract picture of principles that guide one to conceive, organize, implement and document quality software.

If you are a journeyman programmer looking for the original latin, enjoy this well-polished collection for yourself.

Still relevant in the world of Software Engineering.......2003-08-22

Anyone who considers themself a Java developer should know who Dave Parnas is. Without the insight of Dave Parnas in the 60s and 70s there would be no such thing as the Java programming language. Ever heard of information hiding (the basis for all Object Oriented programming)? Yeah, Parnas came up with that. Exception Handling? That's him too. Interfaces? Parnas. (Get the idea?)

This book reprints 33 of Parnas' most influential papers. Each paper is started off with an introduction from one of Parnas' peers (like Barry Boehm), giving the paper a connection to the modern state of Software Engineering, and trying to give the reader an understanding of just how seminal the particular paper was to the world of Computer Science and Software Engineering.

I believe you become a much better programmer if you understand where things come from. Once you understand how things were before "Information Hiding" came about, you get a better appreciation for why its such a necessary and important practice. You'll become a better programmer because you're more aware of what would happen if you didn't have exception handling. And you'll be come a better writer when you understand why buzzwords can be so dangerous in technical papers.

Dave Parnas has been a huge influence over the world of Software Engineering. Everyone should have the chance to read his work.

The most influential book I've read on software engineering!.......2003-05-30

The ideas presented in this collection of papers changed forever the way I think about developing sofware. These papers separate the men from the boys. If you understand the concepts layed out by Parnas in these papers you are well along your way to understanding the fundamentals necessary for developing quality software. The papers are clearly research oriented and don't have modern real world applications presented in the text, however, the ideas are timeless. The reader will need to make some connections with the modern world on their own. It is well worth the time and effort to read and digest what Parnas has to say.

There's nothing new under the sun..........2001-09-18

The software world is full of "revolutionary" ideas that seem to be periodically rediscovered. Topics such as refactoring, data hiding, and "design for change" have all made recent rounds in the development world. However, most of these concepts have been part of the research literature for decades.

Much of the software development work done today is done by people lacking the requisite fundaments for the job. Very few are capable of assessing the true technical strengths of software products. Most are content to read the glossy sales brochures or shallow write-ups in trade magazines to maintain their knowledge of the state of the art. A careful reading of the collected papers in this volume go a long way towards protecting the reader from the modern snake oil salesmen of the software industry.

The present translation draws upon nearly half a century of Husserl scholarship as well as the many translations into English of other books by Husserl, occasioned by W.R. Boyce Gibson’s pioneering translation of Ideas, First Book, in 1931. Based on the most recent German edition of the original text published in 1976 by Martinus Nijhoff and edited by Dr. Karl Schuhmann, the present translation offers an entirely new rendering into English of Husserl’s great work, together with a representative selection of Husserl’s own noted and revised parts of his book. Thus the translation makes available, for the first time in English, a significant commentary by Husserl on his own text over a period of about sixteen years.

Aquivocations.......2003-12-23

The fault of Husserl's main work - or at least one of them - is only that though he's very against linguistic aquivocations, he does some. It's not suddenly understandable, that the noetisch-noematisch expressions has no connection with the difference of noma and noemata (plural), but that noetisch means "refering to the noesis" and noematisch "refering to the noema" etc.

flawed translation.......2003-10-09

This translation is a huge improvement over the pioneering work by Boyce-Gibson from the 30s. But, as you read, you'll have to keep a pencil handy. Specifically, you should scratch out every occurrence of the term "mental process". That phrase is Kersten's choice to render the german "Erlebnis". In translating "Erlebnis" in this manner, Kersten is following the lead of Dorian Cairns, who made the suggestion in his "Guide For Translating Husserl." While it makes sense not to translate "Erlebnis" as "experience" (as one normally would in rendering colloquial German) since "experience" should be reserved to render the German "Erfahrung," just about any of the alternate translations would be better than the highly misleading "mental process." "Lived experience" would be much simpler and better - or you could render it with a neologism like "lived-through". Really anything other than "mental process" would be an improvement.

Also, there used to be a paperback edition of this item. Such books are of interest to students. In whose interest is it to price them out of the reach of anyone except libraries?

by well known children's artists. I have 6 grandchildren, ranging from babies to a 9 year old. This book has material for
all ages, and it is well organized by subjects..."spooky poems",

Our girl's book club is reading this book of poems. Once they finish they will each get to keep a copy of the book. Poems are classic and the pictures are amazing. It's the best poem book so far!

This marriage of poetry and illustrations is like no other. As an educator I enjoy the layout of the book. The poems are divided into categories such as poems about weather, spooky poems, and animal poems. The illustrations are by Caldecott Medal artists - the best of the best! I have purchased countless copies of Sing a Song of Popcorn as it is a perfect gift to give to families to celebrate the arrival of a new baby. It is a book that all members of the family can enjoy - the young ones will enjoy the rhyming patterns of some of the poems and the silliness of others. The adults will treasure the inclusion of such classic poems as Robert Frost's "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" and Jack Prelutsky's entertaining "The Spaghetti Nut".

This is a very good book, both for children and adults. I wish these stories were available when I was young. Adults will find much to entertain them as well as many reminders of their childhood. I was not as impressed with the illustrations as the publisher but art is subjective.
