joan hinds' contemporary wardrobe.......2007-09-09
I have made most of the clothes presented in Hinds "Sew the Contemporary Wardrobe" and been very pleased with the results. Her instructions are clear and complete and allow for personal variation. My granddaughters and neighbor girls have been happy with their gifts of doll clothes!
Because I liked "Contemporary" so much, I recently ordered (via Amazon)and received promptly 3 more Hinds books.
contemporary wardrobe ofr 18 inch dolls.......2007-03-12
Joan Hinds provides an excellent choice of patterns with which to create indoor outdoor fashions for 18" dolls. The patterns are timeless. They can easily be modified to reflect most style periods from the mid 20th century forward.
18" doll pattern.......2006-11-11
Nice group of different outfits, great pictures of the clothes. I am looking forward to sewing each outfit for the dolls. I have not taking the time to sew but I have cut and organized each outfit and mark what page in the book for the directions.
Former Sewer.......2006-08-05
I just love this book. Patterns are easy and the instructions are easy to follow. A lot of fun things to make. My granddaughter is so excited to have fun new things for her new doll.
Great patterns! A real money-saver!.......2006-05-19
I love the American Girl Dolls, but the clothes can be expensive--more than $20 per outfit! The outfits in this book look at least as nice as what you can find in the catalog, and with a little imagination I'm sure you could duplicate a lot of their outfits. All of the patterns are included in an envelope in the back, which is nice but I could never figure out how to fold the gigantic sheet so it fits back in there! I'm not a very experienced sewer, yet I was still able to make 3 really cute outfits from these patterns. As a bonus, there are crochet patterns for a hat and purse.

Customer Reviews:
Just ... not good........2006-10-31
The simple truth is that Ms. Guidice's repaints are not very good. Although she may help an absolute beginner get started, her own work is so amateurish that it's uninspiring. I don't expect fantastic writing, but the examples do not create confidence in the expertise of the instructor.
Any Jim Faraone book has better eye candy and specific tips; many, MANY generous doll artists offer help online with tutorials and fabulous galleries of their work. A quick search of the Web (try "repaint tips" or "fashion doll repaint") will prove infinitely more rewarding than this book.
Marginal product........2005-04-26
Firstly, I am quite disgusted with the author's own glowing review of her work in the pretended guise of a user/reader. Perhaps she wrote this review before Amazon implemented their "real name" options and forgot that she had written this review anonymously. In any case - one might consider disregarding a pretend review by the book's own author.
I purchased this book back when I began repainting, and it was a small help to me as a beginner. This book may serve as the most base of starts but beyond that I cannot recommend it. If you are anything but the most green of novices, you will likely get no information of value from the work presented. Unfortunately there is a lack of quality repaint books in the market, so it is true that this is one of the only options. i would recommend contacting a repainter for tips instead, and searching the internet, which contains many valuable resources for fledgling repainters.
A wonderful backup to the first!.......2004-08-28
I just left a review for the first book Creating Fashion Dolls and I had to drop by here to leave a comment about this book. The Irish lassie "Shannon" on the cover is beautiful. I've read some of the other reviews and am beginning to think that Amazon should find out where the venom is coming from. Could it be professional jealousy? These books have helped pave the way for my makeovers and I wouldn't trade them for anything. My best advice to the person sitting on the fence over the purchase of any of these books is: Don't let nasty remarks fool you. Make up your own mind by seeing for yourself! Thanks Sabrina and I hope you continue writing many more books. I enjoy your style!
Not worth the time.......2004-02-03
I bought this book with the expectation of seeing examples from a experienced doll artist. I felt her painting was elementary and not artistic. I expected a more professional and pulled together product from someone writing a how to book. Stick to Jim Faraone's book or get on the internet and look up doll customizers and repaints. The overall information was good but her painting style is sloppy.
Basic How To Book - disappointing.......2004-01-22
This book is for the beginner who has less than no idea where to start. It does have basic how-to info but I found the examples and dolls in the book very disappointing. I feel like even though I have never done a fashion doll repaint I can do at least as good a job as the author did if not better. I was expecting a lot more and if I had paid full price for this book I would have returned it. (I bought a used one) I don't want to be mean but the nose holes on one doll looked like boogers and the Julia Roberts repaint doll's lips were disturbing. If you want just the basics on how to get started then buy the book, if you expect more then don't.

Rescued from toy box obscurity with the publication of Garan's first book, This Is Blythe (50,000 copies sold), the 12-inch tall diva has been celebrated in the front windows of Bloomingdales; on the cover of Women's Wear Daily; on VH1's "I Love the '70s"; in People, the New York Times, and ad campaigns for Nordstrom, Sony, and trendy Japanese department stores. In Blythe Style, she shows off 100 to-die-for outfits created for her by top designers from around the world and photographed with colorful invention by Garan, including Gucci, Prada, Versace, Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, John Galliano, Paul Smith, Issey Miyake, Vivienne Westwood, and dozens more, all for the sake of charity. Tr s chic!

Great doll book with really creative photos!.......2007-05-13
If you love Blythe dolls -- or dolls in general -- you will certainly love this book. It's got really creative photos of Blythe dolls. Very imaginative and well-done book!
Great Style.......2007-05-07
This is an amazing book for someone in the fashion or design business. Not only the clothing is great but the styling is beautiful, witty and in perfect coordination with the spirit of the clothes.
I highly recommend this book.
A must for creative collectors.......2007-03-08
This book shows photos of Blythe wearing creations from dozens of designers all over the world. It is full of inspiration for collectors who design and sew their own fashions for Blythe.
Proudly displayed amongst my other art books.......2006-07-02
Gina Garan's "Blythe Style" sits on my shelf with, to mention a few, Matthew Barney's "Cremaster," many books on Joseph Cornell, "Just Above the Mantelpiece: Mass-Market Masterpieces" edited by Wayne Hemingway, Joseph Beuys' "The Multiples," and Patrick McMullan's "So Eighties."
Yes, I do collect the Blythe doll. I'd never in my life collected a doll before (LPs being my main addiction,) but I was drawn to this one, through my introduction via Gina Garan's photography. I think if I had seen a Blythe doll on the shelf, to be honest, I may not have seen what an amazing creature she is. For me, Blythe is not from the human realm; she belongs with the various nixies, dryads, elvish maidens and other elemental beings. I can say that I am one of the people for whom Blythe has become a creative muse, in many areas of artistic expression.
With the US publication of Gina Garan's "Blythe Style," Blythe as fashion icon only increases worldwide. Not only for Blythe fans, but those who are interested in fashion, fashion photography, and art. In these photos by Gina, Blythe models fashions by Milk, John Galliano, Pleats Please by Issey Miyake, Sonia Rykiel, and Vivienne Westwood. The settings, styling, and every aspect of Gina's photography are visually stunning as well as chic and often humorous. I look at this collection again and again.
A "Must Have" for all Blythe lovers!!!.......2006-01-01
Gina captures the essence of Blythe through the eye of her camera!!! Who else could bring out such personality of dolls in pictures. Amazing photography of Blythe in beautiful designer outfits. Wonderful coffee table book to look at over and over!...bronxdoll :)

A great reference book with great photos and descriptions to keep track of your dolls clothes and your investment.
A MUST FOR THE BARBIE DOLL COLLECTOR!!.......2006-11-10
For any serious collector of vintage Barbie doll, this book is the best resource available. I have many other books on early Barbie and her fashions, but this volume is the one that I consistently use. It is an accurate, comprehensive chronology of Barbie doll, her family and friends from 1959 through 1967. The photographs alone are worth purchasing the book. The colors are vibrant and crisp. Each fashion is pictured with all of its original components. This is of great value to the collector in putting together an outfit. I keep this book by my computer for reference when making vintage Barbie doll purchases or bidding on online auctions. I cannot imagine collecting Barbie doll items without it!

Customer Reviews:
"Sew Today's Fashions for 18-inch dolls" by Joan Hinds.......2007-09-09
I ordered this book because I've made scores of clothes using Hinds' EXCELLENT book, "Contemporary Wardobe for 18-inch Dolls," which has very fine instructions. I like "Today's Fashions" except for one difficulty: THE PATTERN PIECES ARE NOT NUMBERED. Numbered pieces are much easier to find and keep organized.
I also ordered Hinds' books, "International Wardrobe" and "Baby Doll Clothes," both with numbered pieces. The Spanish huipil (International)turned out nicely; however, one step was omitted in the instructions: finishing the back edges.
Hinds does wonderful, imaginative work; I'm eager to try many more outfits in "International," "Baby Doll" and "Today's." I've made doll clothes for many years; your delightful books are encouraging me to keep at it. Thank you, Joan!
So much fun!.......2007-03-14
I absolutely love this book. My daughter got her American Girl doll from Santa last Christmas, and she keeps asking for outfits for her. At $25 per outfit on average, it will get too expensive so soon. I found this book on a different website that offers a snapshot and description of each outfit, but of course the book is cheaper on Amazon.
I have some experience in sewing, so the outfits are a breeze to make in just a few hours. They all turn out looking very professional, fit the doll quite well, and my daughter is very very excited. She is only 5, but by watching me make them she is getting interested in sewing herself. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an 18-inch doll and some familiarity with sewing.
toay's fashions for 18 inch dolls.......2007-03-12
Joan Hinds patterns are well though out and easy to follow. Her fashion choices certainly reflect the choices I see on my elementary aged students. I find that they can be integrated with patterns from her other books as well which allows for a lot of creative choices.
Simple and cute.......2007-01-12
Joan Hinds does a great job of turning simple patterns into lovely designs. Most styles are very versatile. The instructions are short and direct. Most beginners should not encounter too mamy problems following along. Full size pattern pieces are included in an envelope attached to the back of the book. This is a much appreciated feature.
The only negative comment that I have is that the clothes tend to fit slightly too big. I understand that this is because the patterns are designed for several different manufacturers of dolls. Therefore it is imperative that you try the clothes on the doll before completing the outfit.
Great Book!.......2006-03-01
I haven't sewed in years, and I have already made 2 outfits that look perfect! The instructions are very easy to follow. This is a good way to get back into sewing.

Customer Reviews:
Basic and not so fabulous.......2007-01-10
Unfortunately, the patterns make boxy garments without much shaping. While errors, as noted by an earlier reviewer, are problems, omissions make the book deficient, and a novice would have difficulty. The book offers interesting ideas, but I found making adjustments to the instructions was the only way to get good results.
Great Book.......2006-08-08
This book is full of great patterns for Barbie. It also really made me laugh. I am not a Barbie collector or enthusiest. I just got it to knit my daughter some pretty Barbie clothes. Each outfit has a description for it as if it were a very exspensive designer piece being bought out of a catalog. I read the whole book as a work of fiction and as a good pattern book.
Knit versus crochet........2006-08-06
I prefer the Crochet For Barbie book. Keep mindful that Barbie bodies thru the years do require slight attire fit-adjustments. Still, pattern errors in this Knit book caused me to wonder if Nicky's book success (she is Barbie's authorized needlecraft fashion maker) caused publr/mfr to seek quick profits without testing their knit-to-crochet pattern translation software. Admittedly, the fashions are all great and it is nice to finish a chic project in an eye-blink. Needlecrafters will appreciate Crochet/Knit For Barbie books patterns working up pro-style, also quickly teaching beginners cro-knit skills for human attire and accys. Experienced needlecrafters' detail modifications can result in gorgeous outfit variations. Learning your yarn-usage with their common needle sizes makes catching errors nearly automatic (mine is .5"/k and .25"/sc for sport yarn and cotton no. 5 respectively).
Little girls will want you to make everything in this book.......2006-01-22
Sweaters, afghans, swimsuits, rugs, even a dog sweater. Nicky Epstein gives you a pattern for nearly anything you might want to knit for a Barbie. Well photographed pictures are followed by clear instructions for creating the items. Some of the recommended yarns are rather exotic, but an experienced knitter may be able to substitute from yarns left over from other projects. This would be a good book to have on hand if you are a knitting Mom, Grandma or doting Auntie.
Knits for Barbie.......2005-07-21
If you like to knit and love Barbie, you can create some great little outfits with this book. Instructions are clear and the pictures are great

Customer Reviews:
EXTRA WORK REQUIRED .......2005-06-02
I had good intentions when I had purchased this book, (a year ago) but I have YET to make anything from the pattern book. Lots of interesting ideas, but nothing that really stood out and grabbed me. I'm more of an era clothing designer and was hoping for more ideas/patterns for 1950's clothing for my Gene Doll. Some of the outfits were very creative, but the patterns NEED to be ENLARGED.
Here are some pointers for those seeking additional doll patterns/designs. You can take virtually ANY pattern and enlarge or shrink by placing them over a scanner and printing from your printer. I've recently taken a Barbie pattern and had it enlarged for a Tyler Wentworth doll. Very easy. If you don't own a printer, you could do this at a printing shop very cheap. Also, mix/matching pattern pieces works well too. Perhaps there is a doll pattern that you enjoy, but you want to shorten the sleeves or add a medieval twist, etc. You can always switch out the sleeves of another pattern.
Either way, the book has some good examples, but I wasn't too impressed with the patterns offered or the book as a whole. Considering the book has been collecting dust on my shelf, SPEAKS VOLUMES.
Famous Couples in Fabulous Costumes.......2004-09-03
I own both of Hazel McMahon's books and have enjoyed making some of the outfits. I especially love this one because, 1. I'm a sucker for period costumes, 2. I'm also a sucker for romance and 3. There are costumes for my men dolls (Trent, other males have come out since this book was published).
I was surprised to read the other review putting this book down. It's always a good idea to fit the pattern before you sew since different materials can make a big difference when sewing in such a small scale. You can always email Hazel for questions if you are having a problem with a pattern.
Has anybody really tried these patterns?!.......2004-01-13
I read rave reviews for this book (and also for her other book)but my question is "has anybody really tried Ms. McMahon's patterns?!" because if you have I doubt the reviews would be as stellar as they are. There are mistakes in this book -- very basic is the seam allowance which is 5/8" or 1.5 cm. This is too large and it does not work! Also, there are steps which are missing in some of the instructions. Either that or she is assuming that we are all experts sewers. Many times, also parts do not fit properly into each other. I just wonder if she used the same patterns to create the outfits shown in the photos. It is really very frustrating to be inspired by the nice-looking photos and not be able to make them properly for yourself.
Something different for larger fashion dolls.......2003-01-25
The new Hazel McMahon book of patterns for 15" dolls, Famous Couples Fashion Doll Patterns, just arrived. It is a 2003 imprint, and you can smell the fresh ink.
I have her Period and Contemporary Patterns for Fashion Dolls, but this features mostly costumes of Gene's period - 1930s-1950s - which means there are similar Simplicity and Vogue patterns. I enjoyed the book, picked up some good ideas, but have only used a few of the patterns, which work well. And, of course, I haven't yet sewn from this one at all.
However, I have looked through it, and it is a hoot. McMahon takes 10 famous couples from fact and fiction, and designs costumes that would be appropriate for them. Her couples range from Cleopatra and Marc Antony to Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. For most of the costumes, she is inspired by movies about these characters, or ones set in their period. She tries to be faithful to history in designing her costumes: the Lauren Bacall suit is almostidentical to one Bacall wears in a photograph. She also gives "bonuses": photographs of variations on her costumes and a description of how to do the variation, which means there are actually more than 20 costumes available. As in her last book, her accessories are a particularly wonderful bonus: hats and purses for the gals, and boots and sandals for the male doll.
As in her previous book, McMahon's illustrations are very clear. Her instructions seem vague when you read them, which can make a project seem a little daunting. However, I found that in her previous book, what you needed to do became very clear as you went through the project. Although McMahon has designs rated for beginners, I think her presentation might scare them off.
McMahon designs for all the 15" and 16" fashion dolls, and has various dolls modeling various costumes, with some astute judgment (I mean, Madra would just have to be Wallis Simpson). She cautions readers in the intro that, although all the costumes can be made for all the popular dolls, if you want to make a costume for one doll that is modeled by another, you must be very careful to cut extra margin, and to fit it on your own doll. But then she doesn't indicate which doll is modeling a particular costume, and it can be hard to guess, in particular in the case of dolls that seem to have been custom painted.
While the fact that there are many female dolls in this size range muddies that issue, the opposite happens for the male dolls. There is only one male doll currently available, and costumers can only hope that, as other male fashion dolls in this size come on the market, they will have the same dimensions.
McMahon rates her costumes for difficulty. Her patterns are not full size, and need to be enlarged on a photocopier - but, as she points out in her introduction, this means she was able to put in an additional 4 patterns. I enjoyed looking at this book very much, and am a confident enough sewer to expect to try and succeed with the patterns. In particular, I am very pleased that McMahon provides costume patterns for these dolls that are most original, and very different from the ones available at the fabric store.
Book Description
Acclaimed doll costumer Louise Hedrick presents patterns for creating a complete wardrobe of 30 ensembles for this beloved French doll, authentically adapted from the patterns offered in issues of La Semaine de Suzette from 1905-1916. Arranged chronologically within the categories of whitework, lingerie and nightwear; dresses, bonnets and coats; outfits for make-believe (déquisements); and special clothing for the important ceremonies of The Church, the patterns vary in difficulty from the easiest to the most advanced. Completed ensembles are modeled on early Bleuettes and shown in full-color, with close-up views of important details; directions for heirloom sewing techniques and embroidery stitches are included. Ms. Hedrick's patterns are introduced by Bleuette expert Barbara Hilliker's authoritative text, which places the clothing in the context of social and fashion history. Ms. Hilliker also offers a basic introduction to the history of Bleuette.
Customer Reviews:
Study, look and create Bleuette's wardrobe.......2005-10-07
The book starts with a little history of the doll from French and great vintage pictures are added (through out the book) to show how things were back than and there are instructions how to make the right embroidery stitches that were used. Patterns are actual size and easy to trace. Instructions are easy especially when you're an more experienced sewer but also the novice can have an easy start sewing because there are all kinds of patterns to find in this book. From very easy to complicated (more pattern pieces, pleats to make, put trimming on etc.)you will always find the right pattern to start with.
The pictures of the fashions to make, are the size of one page - 9"x12" - so all kinds of details are there to see. What can I say but this is a wonderful addition to your doll(pattern) books and I'm sure you'll love it! Good for hours and hours of reading and sewing pleasure.
excellent patterns.......2005-09-06
Louise uses the original French patterns and sews them as they were meant to be done. Her work is inspiring.
Customer Reviews:
Modern doll patterns.......2007-08-03
Nice patterns with easy to follow instructions. More for the modern doll maker, than for the antique reproductionist.
Fashions for small dolls.......2007-07-02
Another fabulous book by Rosemarie Ionker regarding sewing for small dolls.
Contains great patterns which fit with contemporary sewing techniques.
Great Resource.......2007-05-23
What a fabulous book! She has a very innovative way of eliminating excess seams and inserting sleeves easily. This book is great for Ann Estelle and her patterns can be enlarged a little to also make clothes for Betsy McCall!
Review for "Fashions for Small Dolls".......2007-03-22
This is a wonderful little book for those interested in making their own doll clothes for dolls 7 inches through 12 inches tall. The beautiful photo section gives the sewer many examples and ideas for all types of clothes. The back of the book contains patterns for all the doll clothes shown in the book in all the sizes. The directions section, in the middle, does require some reading but is well written. Fabric choices are discussed, as well as embellishment, patterns, sewing tips and construction. There is a very handy table for doll measurements included. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys and is interested in creating beautiful and unique doll clothes.
Beautiful Doll Clothes by a Master.......2003-12-23
Rosemarie Ionker's beautiful doll clothes are famous for details like smocking and embroidery. Her designs have been sold through "Boneka/Petite Creations" and have been featured on high quality collector dolls. I have long considered these clothes the finest the doll world has to offer, so I was thrilled to find her latest book of patterns tailored for small dolls.
This book has patterns for dolls that are 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12 inches tall. Almost half of the book is filled with pages and pages of patterns, drawn simply and clearly labeled for each size doll and by the pattern piece. There are also many pages of stunning photographs showing off Ionker's completed creations. The text is high quality and to the point. She offers tips for pattern adjustments as well general sewing tips, information on fabrics and embellishments, and, of course, directions on how to use/assemble the patterns.
The patterns in this book are for dolls representing children, and not adult proportioned fashion dolls. There are pattern pieces to clothe both boy and girl dolls. The dolls shown in this book range from Ginny, to Wendy Lawton's 9 inch dolls, to small porcelain, vinyl and wood dolls. Ionker will let you know how to clothe them all, with photographs documenting the differences and directions on how to find the right fit.
I would recommend this book for those seamstresses who have had at least some experience sewing. Sewing for small dolls requires some special tricks and a lot of patience! Ionker's work, though, can inspire and direct those advanced beginners to making more detailed clothing for small dolls.
