Book Description

W. W. Norton & Company is proud to present the Sixth Edition of The Norton Sampler. As a rhetorically arranged collection of short essays for composition, our Sampler echoes the cloth samplers once done in colonial America, presenting the basic patterns of writing for students to practice just as schoolchildren once practiced their stitches and ABCs on needlework samplers. This new edition shows students that description, narration, and the other patterns of exposition are not just abstract concepts used in composition classrooms but are in fact the way we think—and write. The Norton Sampler contains 63 carefully chosen readings—classics as well as more recent pieces, essays along with a few real-world texts—all demonstrating how writers use the modes of discourse for many varied purposes.

4 out of 5 stars School Book.......2002-04-07

A collection of essays assembled by type and style of writing.
The book instruvts how to write common essay types by presenting the reader with a few examples of each kind. The cool part is the commentary by the authors of some of the essays as to what they were thinking when they wrote them and how they went about the writing process.

Good use for an Intro to Writing college level class.

4 out of 5 stars The essay is alive and well written.......2001-04-22

Norton Readers have long been a staple of university literature and composition courses, which is no doubt the original purpose of this volume (hence the extended title, "Short Essays for Composition"). If you don't let this deter you, you will be rewarded with a collection of some of the best of American essays with a plus. This is not only a collection of well written essays spanning early and modern nonfiction, but you have the bonus of modern prose stylists such as Annie Dillard and Barry Lopez talking about the pieces that are included: how they get ideas, how they craft their work, why they write in nonfiction. A satisfying and interesting collection, well worth reading and passing along to others. Great for teachers and students interested in learning about nonfiction as well, as nonfiction as a genre is the organizing schema of this volume.

This book is of such high quality and easy to read. I love all of her books.

1 out of 5 stars Egg Money Quilts: 1930's Vintage Samplers.......2007-07-31

I was extremely disappointed with this publication! I own multiple copies of Eleanor Burn's DVDs and matching books. I am probably one of her biggest fans. This book requires that you purchase a book from QuiltSmart which costs another $20 and a plastic template to get the specific measures to cut the fabric pieces, etc. For the price of the book, I felt that at least all of the instructions should have been within the book I was purchasing or the book should have been a lot less expensive brand new.

Book Description

Three Complete Novels,
The Quilter's Apprentice, Round Robin, and
The Cross-Country Quilters, from
The New York Times Bestselling Author,
Jennifer Chiaverini

Here's where it all began -- the three novels that first made beloved friends of the Elm Creek Quilters, who stepped out of Pennsylvania's idyllic Elm Creek Manor and into the heart of America.

The Quilter's Apprentice: Master quilter Sylvia Compson shares the secrets of her creative gifts with her young assistant, Sarah McClure. During their lessons, the intricate, varied threads of Sylvia's life begin to emerge. It is the story of a young wife living through the hardships and agonies of the World War II home front; of a family torn apart by jealously and betrayal; of misunderstanding, loss, and a tragedy that can never be undone. As the bond between them deepens, Sarah resolves to help Sylvia free herself from remembered sorrows and restore her life -- and her home, Elm Creek Manor -- to its former glory. In turn, Sylvia helps Sarah confront her own troubled past. Out of their shared triumph is born a lifelong friendship and a fledgling business called Elm Creek Quilts.

Round Robin: To celebrate the beginning of Elm Creek Quilts, Sarah, Sylvia, and their circle of friends name themselves the Elm Creek Quilters. As a gift to Sylvia, the others have begun a round robin -- a quilt created by sewing concentric patchwork to a central block as it is passed around a sewing circle. As each woman makes her creative contribution, she adds her story to the history of Elm Creek Manor. Resplendent in green, blue, and gold, the quilt serves as a symbol of the complex, lasting ties that unify mothers and daughters, sisters and friends. As they stitch together the sometimes harmonious -- often discordant -- scraps of their crazy-quilt lives, the Elm Creek Quilters learn that friendship is a most precious gift and that even in the darkest of times, love illuminates the way home. The Cross-Country Quilters: Five women arrive at Elm Creek Manor, hoping to find in their quilting lessons an escape from the problems they have left at home. This far-flung group becomes fast friends who pledge to complete a "challenge quilt" -- symbolic of each woman's personal goals -- in one year's time. Although the Cross-Country Quilters share a common creative goal, as the year goes by, their bonds are tested by the demands of daily life. But despite differences in age, race, and background, the friends' love for quilting and affection for one another unite them in a patchwork of caring and acceptance. The quilt they make reminds them of an everlasting truth -- friends may be separated by great distance, yet the strength of their bond can transcend any obstacle.

"Endearing characters and pleasant vignettes render this series as charming and cozy as a favorite blanket," said Publishers Weekly of the Elm Creek Quilts books. Jennifer Chiaverini is at her heartwarming best in these three novels that launched a bestselling phenomenon.

4 out of 5 stars Marty's Review.......2007-07-22

This book is a very heart warming series. It was well written and held my interest throughout all three books. I am looking foward to reading about more characters in the next books in the series.

5 out of 5 stars It is really great!!!.......2007-05-09

This book is really interesting as I am a quilter(beginning). The story line is good also. I enjoy all of Jennifer Chiaverini books.

5 out of 5 stars Three wonderful novels!.......2007-04-02

"An Elm Creek Sampler" is a wonderful introduction to the world of Elm Creek quilts seeing as it is the three first novels together in one book! In "The Quilter's Apprentice" we are introduced to the women who are central figures for the series - the wonderful and knowledgeble master quilter Sylvia Compson and the ressourseful young woman Sarah McClure, and how they start the transformation of Elm Creek Manor from a run down sales item to the idea of a quilt retreat. We are also introduced to the Tangled Web Quilters - who in "Round Robin" become the staff of Elm Creek quils. In Round Robin we follow their everyday struggles, their ups and downs - this is my favorite among this wonderful series. In the last book in the sampler: " Cross Country Quilters" the quilt retreat is really up and running, and here we follow a group of quilters who meet at the manor and how they together find the strength to conquer their problems in life and how they form a wonderful friendship! Read them and you'll love them!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Way to Get Caught Up!.......2007-03-25

This is a great way to get "into" the series. Now my curiosity is peaked and I plan to read all of the books in this series.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding author Jennifer Chiaverini.......2007-03-21

Great book, love it when an author draws you in within just a few pages, Jennifer Chiaverini certainly knows how to do this. Enjoyed all 721 pages, did without sleep to keep reading, just had to know what happened next. Now reading the next 3 in the series, keep up the good writing J.C.

5 out of 5 stars Precise Piecing.......2007-02-23

I really like this technique. It allows for uniform sized blocks if you follow instructions and use the rulers as stated. The 12" blocks are quicker and easier than the 6" blocks, some of them were a challenge. I've done the large blocks twice, the small only once. I really enjoyed working from this book and will do some of these blocks again. Using reproduction fabrics from the Civil War era, this quilt is very attractive. I will be giving them as gifts. RR

3 out of 5 stars Great Quilt ~ Directions are AWFUL!.......2006-05-31

First off ~ I must say the quilt will be lovely when put together, I have added the sashing and I made flying geese for the border of this quilt...next comes the hand quilting. And the story of each block is nice too.

But PLEASE do not follow her directions, they are awful. After many attempts at her directions, I ended up following the old standby directions for the blocks. It's quite easy if you look at the size the pieces of the block should be before sewing them together. For some reason she uses more steps then needed to make a block. Do not buy her Flying Geese template...waste of money. There are a lot of errors in the measurements, especially in the Bear Paw block..if you follow her directions you'll end up 1/2" too big (claw part). I had to square them down to size after the second attempt.

A nice quilt...bad directions...not a Quilt in a Day, but worth the try.

4 out of 5 stars READ ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST........2005-10-25

I have been quilting for about 3 years. Like many of the other people who wrote a review, I found it difficult to follow some of the instructions. To get it right, I had to take my time and make sure the cutting and sewing was exact. It is a great challenge and it has made me a more precise sewer. You don't need to be an expert quilter but having some quilting knowledge would help. Even with some parts being difficult the end results are worth while.

5 out of 5 stars The Undergound Railroad Sampler-Eleanor Burns.......2005-10-22

This book has many features that are not in other quilt books. Tthis book shows you short cuts to the flying geese, & it show many good time saving techniques to shorten your time behind the sewing machine, and it's one of Eleanor Burns best books ever. Everything is so user-friendly and a great book to use for a quilt/sewing class. Everyone should have this book for the easy to follow time saving techniques.
the company had the books to me within a week...great shipping!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Underground Railroad Sampler Quilt.......2005-10-14

Eleanor Burns has written the book so that anyone with begining quilting skills would have no problems in making this quilt. She tells you how much fabric you need for each color of fabric. At the begining of each block there is a list of tools that you will need. Each block is broken down step by step in easy to follow directions.

Book Description

Cakewalk's software synthesizers are some of the most powerful and widely used on the market. This book shows you how to operate and get the best results from their complete range of synths, from those bundled with Cakewalk's main products, to the rgc:audio synthesizers, to Cakewalk's newest synthesizers, including Dimension Pro and Rapture. Discusses filters, envelopes, effects, the sfz format, how to create patches, and more.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Subtitle Says It All!.......2007-05-14

The book contains a great introduction to "virtual analog" synths which applies regardless of whether its a Cakewalk product or not. Each chapter dives into the depths of a specific Cakewalk synth, many of which are bundled with various Cakewalk products, so this book is like an addendum to the owner's manual. I don't consider myself a synth "tweakhead" so I found this book EXACTLY what I needed! For musicians who like to tweak their synths instead of simply playing the Presets, this is the book that explains what you're doing when you adjust those knobs, dials and sliders. Very nice!

All you need is a host program (Cakewalk's Sonar, Home Studio or Project5 will be fine) and you've already got some of these synths in your software arsenal. You can download some of these synths for free from Cakewalk! I recommend purchasing Dimension Pro. I've been playing around with Z3TA+ and am eyeballing Rapture as well. These are serious studio quality synths, each with a TON of power. This book details how to harness that power and put it to work in your music.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource!.......2007-03-12

I have needed this book for years. Step by step, thorough instructions that have helped me to really explore the deep possibilities in Cakewalk synths. The accompanying downloads make the value of this book increase exponentially. The section on Z3TA+ is worth the price of admission and then some. Thanks!

4 out of 5 stars Cakewalk Synth Sound Designing 101.......2007-02-02

Great book. Although, could not down load the down loadable chapters. A must for, "Cakewalk Synths Users". Goes into good details about sound designing.

5 out of 5 stars Covers the Full Range.......2007-01-11

Cakewalk is one of the leading companies in the music technology market. But up until now there has not been a single integrated book that covers all of the Cakewalk synthesizers. At last there is. And an excellent book it is. It is suitable for the beginner who wants to understand what a synthesizer is and how it can be used to the experienced user who wants to understand his or her synthesizer in greater depth. The book goes as far as you are likely to want to go.

This book has been written with the understanding that most people will not have access to all of the synthesizers in the book. So the book begins with a general introduction to the field in general, which is followed by a full page chart showing a list of the various Cakewalk synthesizers and by their feature set tells you what chapters you should be reading.

Conversely, this approach allow allows you to identify which features are important to you and identifies which synthesizers you can use.

5 out of 5 stars If you are a CakeWalk Sonar user, Buy this book NOW!.......2006-12-07

Let me amend that; if you make music with a DAW Buy "cakewalk synthesizers" now!
First off, I am a guitar player NOT a keyboard player. Oh my father tried to have me trained to play the piano, and I can still play blues solos in the key of C, but I never mastered the keyboard. I own several hardware synths but I have never been able to tweak the presets to create new or more appropriate sounds. Now I can! In "cakewalk synthesizers" Simon Cann walks you through the synthesis process, and has you creating and tweaking sounds right from the get go. The principles and techniques apply to any synth; hardware or software. Each of the synthesizers bundled with Sonar and Project 5 and CakeWalk's new stand-alone synths; Z3TA+, Dimension Pro, Rapture, are covered in great detail. The book alone is well worth the price of admission, but when coupled the downloadable chapters and content, buying this book is a no-brainer. If you make music in the digital world, you need this book! Every guitar player knows that his tone is his signature. Virtual instruments are here to stay and everyone producing music today needs to know how to take control of the tools of the trade. Why sound like everyone else when you can be creating your own signature sounds immediately.
Thanks Simon!

5 out of 5 stars Nice Resource.......2007-08-26

A good resource. I like to use it in conjunction with a Planosphere. I have not explored every "sample" in the book yet, but in general it is a good book to use and allows you to explore the heavens.

5 out of 5 stars Celestial Sampler.......2007-02-14

It is always a joy to receive my Sky and Telescope and NightSky (now deceased) magazines and open them up to Sue's columns to see what new celestial wonders await. This book is a compilation of her articles written over the years in a style that is entertaining, informative and not so technical that a novice like me can easily follow. Her introduction is a colorfully illustrated lesson on general astronomy with monthly sky charts, viewing tips and her personal approach to our science.

The book takes you month by month beginning with January`s wintry delights. Each of the objects discussed are illustrated by star charts and photographs clearly identifying each target and how to find it. This includes a chart listing the object, type, magnitude, distance, RA and DEC. The text is a delightful mixture of fact and myth. What you can expect to see is vividly described with various telescopes, apertures and magnification powers and her own personal observations. Whether your interests are in stars, planets, or deep space objects, there is something for everyone to enjoy and learn. I can't wait for her next edition of Celestial Sampler to be published!

Jack Fox, Richmond Astronomical Society

5 out of 5 stars The Joy of a Small Telescope.......2007-01-18

This book is compiled from Sue's older "Small Scope Sampler" column, which, as the title implies, emphasizes brighter targets, but also makes a point of describing the surprising things you can do with a small telescope if it's used with care beneath a reasonably dark sky. In this way she encourages those who are not equipped with gigantic instruments to go out and enjoy the many, many wonderful sights available to decent small telescopes. Sue's skills as a visual observer are equal to anyone's. Her writing is fluid and unpretentious. Her object selection covers all the bases.

For the past few years, Sue's column has been renamed "Deep Sky Wonders" in honor of an old tradition at Sky & Telescope magazine. Her next compilation will probably be drawn from these, and will feature more targets suitable only for larger scopes. Yet Sue still loves her 4" scope the most, and it still shows even in these later columns.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation.......2007-01-11

I really enjoy Sue's monthly column in S&T - this collection is geat!
Well laid out, and much easier to use without the ads S&T spaces in the monthly articles =-)

Her style, prose, and eagle eye's are unparalled - you'll enjoy this book and her star tours!

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Compilation.......2006-06-15

Celestial Sampler is a conglomeration of Sue French's "Small Scope Sampler" articles that appear in Sky & Telescope magazine each month. It collects 60 installments since its July of '99 introduction. Each article guides the reader through a half dozen or so objects to look at that are nearby one another, so star hopping from one to the other is easy.

The articles are helpful in that they highlight inconspicuous things to look at, such as random NGC objects, and obscure double stars, while visiting old favorites, like the Messier objects. As such, the book is best suited for beginner-to-intermediate level observers who have tackled the major objects out there (M42, M57, etc.), and are looking for something more to look at.

Each article includes a list of around 5-15 objects, a few photos, and a finder chart that plots all of the objects, with stars down to about mag 7-9. The finder charts closely resemble what you'd find in Sky Atlas 2000.

The text of each star hop briefly describes how best to find each object, and a description of the object itself. Frequently each object is described under multiple apertures, though her 4-inch aperture is her "workhorse" scope, and gets the most descriptions. Each object is listed in bold, so finding a description for something is quick and easy.

Overall, this is an excellent guide to finding some more "off the beaten path" stuff that's out there. Even if you already have the S&T issues in which these articles have been published, the book serves as an excellent field companion, since it is well-printed, and glossy, so dew won't be a problem. Recommended.

Recently I've seen some digital tutorial and books that make me thinking on a precipitated release. Sure this is not the case.

5 out of 5 stars Like a good friend sitting next to you explaining it all. .......2007-04-28

This is a very smart, yet very un-nerdy treatment of otherwise very technical subjects...The author has a wonderful, down-to-earth writing style. And he's funny, too. It's like having a cool friend sitting next to you explaining it all.

It's an exceptional book, I'm learning a lot from it, and I'm not even a Mac guy. And the book is a lot of bang for the buck....it's almost 600 pages, and the text is smallish (but still readable), so it's as much info as most 800 page books, and all golden.

The author does a podcast too, which is weekly (or so) companion the book. [...]

5 out of 5 stars Covers a lot of stuff.......2007-04-17

I've been using this book for a couple of weeks now and it's totally got me excited about doing music on my computer again. I know a bit about some of the programs covered in the book (Logic, Reason, Garageband) already, but it gave me more of an idea of how to use those programs more effectively. It also gave me the opportunity to learn about other programs I have been wanting to use. Plus there's just a ton of information about the different software and plugins that are available, some really cool stuff (especially the free stuff). There's also sections that provide "real world scenarios" that I found immensely helpful. These sections gave me ideas of how to use the tools in new ways. The DVD that comes with the book has some great stuff too, freeware, loops, plugins, etc. Super cool.

Overall it has a wealth of information that is relevant to beginners as well as people like me who already have some knowledge of Mac music production. The book is laid out really well and the writing is engaging and well thought out. I can't say enough good stuff about it. I'm sure I will go back to it frequently. Good stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Great Work, Fun Read, Great Format.......2007-05-21

I really enjoyed reading Fracis Preve's "The Remixer's Bible". He keeps it light and fun while still giving you a ton of tricks and insight into remixing and sound design. I would recommend this book for beginners to experts. I also really like the history lessons around certain sounds and the gear that was used to make it. I also like the format of the book as its broken up into lots of smaller sections that you can read and then try out.

Book Description

Knockout Blocks and Sampler Quilts is a new kind of block book from the inventive mind of Judy Martin. With just 3 simple shapes - the square, the rectangle, and the most basic triangle (half-square or quarter-square) - Judy has created a book's worth of brand-new blocks that will keep you making quilts for years!

Every block is presented in at least 3 colorings to help you see all their many possibilities. 9 samplers and 34 quilt suggestions give you great ideas for how to use each block. Every block is presented in at least 3 sizes. Most are presented in 6 or 7 sizes! Each sampler is shown in 3 sizes: wall, twin, and queen. Each size is done in a different beautiful coloring and comes with complete yardage information, cutting instructions, and piecing diagrams.

5 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Quilting Projects and Ideas.......2007-02-07

This book does just what the author intended. It shows you a large variety of blocks and layouts, and inspires you to try your own layouts and color schemes, although you can certainly make the quilts just as Judy Martin shows them. Even my husband got into the act, saying he liked this or that layout, or suggesting a different color scheme.

I really like star blocks to begin with, so I really enjoyed finding a source showing so many variations, some good alternate blocks to go with them, and some traditional and not-so-traditional layouts. There are instructions for cutting each block in a variety of sizes. This allows you to plan a quilt with a few large blocks, which would highlight special prints or quilting, or a "scrappy" quilt with many smaller blocks, or anything in between.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting and Different.......2007-01-12

I am impressed with this book and a little dissapointed. The book is filled with stars that look different and very neat. Also, the settings are wonderful and something you don't see everyday. The things I didn't like were the pictures of the quilts. The quilts are not real quilts but filled in with color. I guess I get more inspired by the real thing. And these quilts would take an exceptional amount of time to make. I didn't care for the layout of the directions either. I am glad that I purchased it for the different ideas.
