Book Description
Pro MySQL is the first book that exclusively covers intermediate and advanced features of MySQL, the world's most popular open source database server. Whether you are a seasoned MySQL user looking to take your skills to the next level, or you're a database expert searching for a fast-paced introduction to MySQL's advanced features, this book is for you.
The first part of this book discusses topics related to design and development. Topics include transaction processing and indexing theory, benchmarking and profiling, and advanced coverage of storage engines and data types. The authors also delve deep into the MySQL source code and system architecture at a level you won't find anywhere else. Essential advanced SQL is also covered, with discussion of subqueries, derived tables, and joins. These concepts are demonstrated in a range of situation-specific examples--from dealing with hierarchical data to performing Geographic Information System (GIS) examples with just MySQL. This section also covers MySQL 5's new enterprise features like stored procedures, triggers, and views.
The latter part of this book devotes itself to administration topics. Topics include MySQL installation and upgrading, user administration, database backups, replication, and clustering. You'll also learn about the new data dictionary features available in MySQL 5.

If you are into MySQL then GET THIS BOOK!.......2007-07-09
No, I am not associated with the authors in any way. I was looking for a book for MySQL that was beyond "this is a database, here is how you select".
I wanted something more challenging that covered topics like clustering, backups, etc.
This book dives deep into MySQL database use and design, including detailed information on indexes, optimizations, etc.
Very good read. I totally recommend this book.

Great Expert Overview.......2007-03-08
This book is a great expert overview of all that is current in MySQL 5. This covers both the SQL interaction with the database and the management. There are aspects that users often don't use in any SQL platform, and it is a shame. The effort expended to learn stored procedures and custom functions is greatly rewarded in code creation and support. This is another book I rate as ROI super positive.
Best book to learn Advanced MYSQL.......2006-08-28
For people like me who have a good understanding of MYSQL, the next logical step would be this book. I already know about stored procedures, transactions and the basics of triggers, but I want to learn more about these topics in more "real-world" scenarios in how to develop larger, enterprise-wide applications. Also I want to know more about other advanced topics that I may not even know to think about. If this sounds like you as well, then read on...
The author starts in with reviewing how business requirements and the software development cycle can be part of database development. This a great chapter for people like me who would like to learn how different approaches are taken from different IT perspectives in a team environment (business analysts, application developers, and project managers) This chapter gives you a good understanding of how the other side thinks.
The next chapter focuses on the importance of proper indexing and strategies as pertaining to data storage. Because once your databases reach to the multiple gigabits of storage space, you need to very focused on how long each request takes. A few seconds here and there begin to add up and can cause serious issues if not taken into consideration early in your database design. Like me who only deals with small to an occasional medium-size database I never really had to think about this before.
The next chapter focuses on transaction processing in MYSQL which is one of the more difficult concepts for many and I am in the process now of reading it. I really like the author's explanations and examples. Each point is explained thoroughly and in an easy to read manner.
The rest of the book goes into more advanced topics (system architecture, benchmarking and profiling, security, replication and clustering) as well as giving more detail and explanation to topics that may only be briefly covered in other MYSQL books (stored procedures, functions, and views).
If you already know the basics of MYSQL and want to really advance your knowledge with "real-world" scenarios, this is the book for you.
Expand your MySQL horizons.......2006-05-29
Highly indicated reading for any database designer involved in developing a major application or in optimizing database operations using MySQL, this intermediate/advanced level book assumes the reader has a general knowledge of database operations and some familiarity with MySQL database system. However, should such awareness be lacking, the book is sprinkled generously with additional source of information to remedy the deficiency. From conceptualizing and elaborating a database to fit business needs to implementing it in an efficient manner, the author takes the reader deep into the inner workings of MySQL in order to optimize database operations. Tools for benchmarking and profiling, which are essentials to indicate where coding performance could be improved, are explored in an insightful manner.
As much as it is possible to make a book on data processing, much less database innards interesting and captivating reading, the author has done an excellent job in this regard.
Overall, a must reading for any MySQL developer looking into enhancing his/her skills.
An excellent resource for advanced MySQL users.......2005-12-07
I am pleased to see a new trend emerging in the MySQL books I get to review, and that is a trend toward more advanced books that assume the reader is already familiar with how to create a table and construct a basic SELECT query. Pro MySQL by Mike Kruckenberg and Jay Pipes is a shining example of this new trend. This book cuts through the basics to provide in-depth information on not only how to use MySQL, but on how the MySQL server actually works.
One example of this is their chapter on Index Concepts. Rather than focus on the basics of how to create an index, this book gives you depth by talking about seek times, buffering, and the actual structure of things such as a B-Tree index. As a result you not only know that an index on a certain column will improve performance, you also know why.
This book is also the first I have seen that takes a chapter to really dig into the MySQL source code and illustrate some of the internal workings of the MySQL server, such as the client protocol, complete with flow charts and diagrams. The System Architecture chapter is a great place to start if you are looking to understand the server internals or modify the MySQL source code.
There is a nice SQL Scenarios chapter that covers some common use cases for things such as finding duplicate and orphan records, retrieving random rows (properly), working with GIS data, and (my favorite) working with hierarchical data. The authors cover the Nested Set model nicely (which I have previously written and presented about), covering the basics of using nested sets. This provides a good starting point from which one could easily jump the Celko's Trees and Hierarchies book.
The book carries on with a good introduction to stored procedures, functions, cursors, views, and triggers to round out the first half of the book, and then spends the second half of the book focusing on administrative tasks.
There is quick coverage of installing and configuring MySQL, with more emphasis given to configuring MySQL than installing it, as is appropriate to a book on advanced MySQL usage. Following installation and configuration comes coverage of user administration, where once again flow charts are used effectively to show the authentication process within the MySQL server.
I was pleased to see the MySQL GUI tools being covered in print, as user administration was shown both using the command-line mysql client and MySQL Administrator. It was good to see the authors recommend that administrators think in terms of user roles, even if roles are not yet implemented in MySQL (the authors suggest the use of scripts to grant and revoke roles, a good workaround in the interim).
This book will certainly be noted for being one of the first to print with coverage of MySQL Cluster, as well as a full chapter on the new INFORMATION_SCHEMA, or MySQL Data Dictionary, as the authors chose to name the chapter.
All in all this is a really solid book for the experienced MySQL user who wants to go futher, and certainly lives up to its name.

Convoluted but highly useful.......2007-10-01
Well - I see my view of the book doesn't line up with others' view. I have not used it as a design handbook, but more of a background info source.
I have used this book frequently to determine types of pipe to consider, details of types of pipe material etc. I use it to 'teach' young engineers. It has the best overview of material types, appropriate uses. It is the only source I have been able to find that lists all the ANSI / ASTM and other standards for various pipe types. It has good overviews of all types of piping (PVC / CPVC / Grey Iron / Ductile Iron etc etc etc). I don't know of anywhere else to get such a broad description of all this type of info.
It is not a design manual... but is unsurpassed for reference and background info... which is the reason I bought it.
This book is a POS. Period........2007-04-23
Do not buy this book. I repeat, do not buy this book. This book is probably over a thousand pages thick but it's poorly organized and poorly written. I highly recommend the Navco Piping Datalog over this piece of garbage. The Navco book is only 240 pages but it very useful if you are a piping engineer.
Actually, I use my Piping Handbook almost every day. It's not so bad as a foot rest.
Bloviated.......2005-04-03
Agonizing drawn out overview, with little depth.
Those in the trade, should try THE PIPE FITTERS BLUE BOOK.
aka,the pipe fitters bible.
An annoying verbiage.......2004-05-14
I was interesting in buying a professional publication relative to piping engineering and, by chance, I was able to borrow this book from a technical library before doing what can not be undone.
How disappointing !
An annoying verbiage prevails over pages after pages.
Few design guidelines, engineering calculations and good practice recommendations.
For instance, the section dealing with the water hammer phenomenon does not contain any equation !
Supports, insulation, valves, plastic and composite materials, ... are covered in far too general terms.
Even the reduced "dictionary alike" paper format leads to a bulky and difficult to read book where chapters are broken down in dozens of pages.
This book must be viewed as a general introduction to piping design engineering but definitively not as a practical reference for day-to-day design issues.
poor book.......2002-06-05
I Buy this book because needed references, general conditions and good practice to solve practical problems of pipes. However I meet with a tangled book, of little clarity and that in general it doesn't embrace the practical topics well referring a lot to the existent norms. Anyway it serves like support to the different norms to go developing a project but alone as reference and in any case like a book of easy access to solve problems on site or the day to day problems.

the very best present.......2007-05-13
The very best present for a ten year old boy - but beware - you will immediately need to head to the hardware store for more PVC pipe, since the excellent book suggests how to make a "bigger and better" marshmallow gun, with stickers and paint. This is an inventive plaything with room for lots of imagination. BTW letting the marshmallows get a little stale makes for better "bullets".
As good as everyone says.......2007-01-24
My 12 year old desperately wanted a marshmallow gun for Christmas. I thought about getting the $[...] one (also on Amazon) but decided on this one, hoping it wasn't too complicated and that it would actually work. It certainly did! My son had it put together in minutes and has had days of fun shooting mini marshmallows. So -- in a nutshell it is extremely easy to put together, to use, and it is really fun! (PS it also doesn't shoot things too hard or fast (though it is still really fun) so younger siblings don't have to worry when this comes out to play)
BIG Hit with Kids, Pets, and Parents!.......2007-01-10
Everyone of our "grands" loved it! What a hit. Even little sibs and puppy dogs got a thrill out of gobbling up spent "ammo." A great way to introduce a play shooter (without presenting a gun as a toy), and deliver an everyday experiment in science.
Bear in mind it shoots MINI marshmallows and include lots with the giving.
Even the most active kids enjoy fancying it up with the included stickers. Book definitely is a plus for quiet time.
Good service. Timely delivery. Excellent plaything with educational bent.
A unique, fun idea book for active kids and active parents.......2006-04-11
Not for library lending but very much recommended for home fun is Every Kid Needs A Marshmallow Launcher: A Project-Oriented Guide To putting together PVC pipe to make a launcher. A wide range of launcher models and options are revealed, offering kids plenty of options, while tips on loading, launching and customizing offer ideas and games and targets too. Highly recommended: a unique, fun idea book for active kids and active parents.
Launcher fun.......2005-12-29
A great book for all ages. Our entire family (including the parents) has had hours of fun making the different launchers and playing the various games. The book is easy for younger children to understand and gets their creative minds going. Our family highly recommends this book.
Book Description
This is the first American book to consider the history and development of the tobacco-smoking pipe as an art form and is an illustrated guide for pipe collectors. Here the author has assembled fact and fancy, history laced with humor, and a chronological collection of pipes. The accompanying text explains pipe styles, materials, and values. Besides present-day briars and corn cobs, pipes can be found made of meerschaum, porcelain, ivory, amber, silver, gold, semi-precious stones and rare woods. Craftsmen have combined imagination, whim, and fantasy to create pipes of fine artistic value.

This is an awesome Mario book!.......1999-09-03
This book is great for Mario fans. It's about how Mario and Luigi get lost in Pipe Land trying to save the princess. You must buy it!
C O O L.......1999-07-18
This book is just cool! The puzzles are hard enough to stump the best of players, but as easy as pie sometimes. I reccomend this book to ANYONE!
This is a VERY good book that is PERFECT for Mario fans........1999-05-08
This book is really fun to read It's one of those books where you choose a choice, then turn to another page, only with PUZZLEs that choose whether you win a Starman or get bonked with a Tweeter Bird. I did it at least 30 times, each one just as exciting. The only problem i had was erasing the pencil marks from the puzzles i had done already.
Why not buy a whole collection..........1999-05-04
WOW! I originally bought this book when it first came out, because I loved Mario. I read it atleast 20 times, bu then I lost it. Looks like I am going to have to re-order this classic.
It's a better Nintendo Adventure Book, but it can be hard.......1998-10-19
This is one of the better Nintendo Adventure Books. It is fun and humorous, but sometimes it can be too hard. It's still one of the best, though.

An excellent resource for Graphics students........2000-05-31
This is the SECOND year I will be ordering this title for my Graphic Art Production students. I hope Mr. Pipes plans to keep this publication up to date with another edition. What I like about this book is manifold: the author's clear, intelligent and succinct language tops my list. My students and I both found his prose not just informative, but interesting. The information covers all the basic concerns of a designer involved in production for print and the internet (it gives a well fleshed-out overview of all our areas of study at least). The section on Typography is also quite thorough and far less ponderous than other commonly used Type texts. All the chapters lay down a perfect bridge to a full lecture. Students come to class comprehending the basics, thus adding to their ability to build on that knowledge. The bios throughout the book are of great interest and focus on contemorary designers of note. The attractive layout supports the notion of Grahic Design, not too common these days. I have viewed many texts in the related areas of Graphic Design and find this book to be a perfect example of what a text should be. Bravo Mr Pipes, and thank-you! I will be watching to see what you publish next.
Only four stars as this was written in '97........1999-07-03
I have used this as a text for a graphic art production class and have found it to be excellent in terms of its explanations. The diagrams are clear, the text concise, the content easily comprehended by my students. I really like the 'Design Trailblazers'...it maintains the heart of good design throughout the often clinical aspects of production. A nice representative selection as well...the students could relate. I await the next edition.

intermixture of thought, play, and literary drum 'n' bass.......2001-06-01
This essay entitled "This Is Not A Pipe" is a fascinating excursion into the intriguing art of the great 20th C. Belgian painter. In this essay Foucault blurs the space between the critic and the subject being criticized. His thorough analysis inculcates his own hypertextual "isms" and replicating terminology that adequately reciprocates Magritte's offbeat beauty. From Foucault's view of what he considers the two principles that ruled painting (European painting?) from the 15th C. to the 20th C., to the relationship between resemblance and similitude, the mystery and static of a Magritte painting is transported onto the pages of this book. Ultimately this text is an interesting display of the interplay between text, image and the elements inculcated in the analysis thereof.
a fine work.......2001-03-05
if you consider this treacle then you certainly lack any real insight into philosophy or art criticism of the 20th century; either that, or you're carrying some kind of baggage or childish grudge.
foucault offers us just one interpretation of magritte's _pipe_, and some thought in general about art, representation and the sign. it's really just part of an on-going discussion. it's a shame he's dead; he'd have loved usenet.
in any case, this book is one voice in a chorus of discussion on the matter; his is also an informed, intelligent, and original voice - albeit controversial (see review below for ruffled feathers).
this book stands on its own, but is definetly not a good introduction to foucault per se; I think it's best to start with a history of sexuality volume I, then read the introduction of history of sexuality volume II, and then you can pretty much read any foucault from there.
Language is a Prison.......2000-12-26
I read this in college while studying semiotics and surrealism, yet the message of Foucault should not be relegated to the exotic and extreme "isms" of academia. I found "Pipe" to be a marvelous and playful illustration of the tryanny of language and the Orwellian control of thought which follows. Readers of Postmodern thought, Zen, Marxism, Film Theory, Psychoanlysis, and Modern Art will find moments of illumination throughout.
Great quick introduction to Foucault.......2000-07-09
No, Foucault is never easy. He sometimes even writes in Foucault-ese. But the intellectual payoffs are well worth it. Seeing him approach a single painting -- which you can look at while reading the book -- is much less taxing than seeing him dissect huge topics such as the history of prisons or the history of sex. Sure, those bigger Foucault tomes carry immense rewards all their own... but for a good, stimulating, and challenging (but not TOO challenging!) introduction to Foucault's philosophy of seeing and of naming, this is a great read.
Perhaps this book is a better choice for philosophy or lit-crit fams than art / art history fans. The "artistic" value of the painting is really of not much importance to Foucault; he is more concerned with its self-referentiality, its use of meaning and names, and so on.
"Treacle"?.......2000-01-31
"If you are looking for a quick read"? What are you doing with Foucault when there's always another Tom Clancy? If you think that looking at pictures precludes thinking about them, then this book isn't for you.
