Book Description
Beginning with studio practices and safety rules, this information-packed handbook is appropriate for both newcomers and experienced dyers but assumes that readers have a serious interest in textile design. An overview of dyeing starts with fibers and fabrics and discusses all aspects of the dyes favored by textile studios—fiber reactive, acid, vat, and disperse—before explaining discharging, screen printing, monoprinting, stamping, stenciling, resist dyeing, dévoré, and painting. Would-be fabric artists are advised along the way to identify a personal approach to dyeing—free spirit? rule-follower?—and color photographs of work by today's top fiber artists elucidate prevailing styles. Recipes and techniques are accompanied by step-by-step instructions with photographs, and a concealed spiral binding allows the book to lie flat. Ten appendices include a worksheet for recording chemicals, procedures, and costs for all projects; a guide to washing fabric; descriptions of stock solutions, thickeners, and steaming; a metric conversion table; and a guide to water temperatures.
Customer Reviews:
So much, much more than I expected!!!.......2007-09-25
Others have already related the key points about this book. I just want to further confirm for everyone looking to buy it that this author really did an EXCELLENT job. She obviously is a art and TECHNICAL expert in this field. She could've taken less time and put out a book that would've gotten her a solid 4.5-star rating. Instead she obviously put in twice the time and ended up with a 10-star book. She gives you all the details that people serious about trying complicated crafts look for but rarely find without studying in the studio of a professional. I just picked this up from the NEW BOOKS rack at the library because I am generally interested in the subjected. Like the one person so far who has given her a lower rating, it did make me think that this is probably too difficult for me. But on the other hand, she has many photos showing the possibilities of what I might be able to accomplish if I did try and it's very seductive. Nothing very special worth accomplishing comes easily and that seems to also apply to fabric art. I also appreciate the thoughtfulness of her making the binding a spiral so the pages lay perfectly flat for easy reference while you follow the directions. If I decide to seriously try this craft, it will be this book that I buy and I doubt I'd even need to buy another one ever.
Throw away your notes - this is all you need!.......2007-09-04
This book has enabled me to recycle ALL of my class and workshop notes and just use this book - it's all there and in great detail. (now I have space for MORE books)
Wonderful book!.......2007-07-18
Holly Brackmann's new book The Surface Designer's Handbook is long over-due and I have ordered it as the textbook for all my fibers classes. As soon as it arrived my students all wanted their own personal copy so several of them purchased it outright just on sight alone. The spiral binding is excellent and the extent of the techniques covered is wonderful. I teach both beginners and advanced fibers students and this book has everything we need as a textbook.
I use it myself for my own work and find it very helpful, well organized and thorough. The information about making color cards with diluted MX dye on watercolor paper is worth the selling price all by itself. It is a technique I knew nothing about and I am thrilled to learn about it. It has saved hours and hours of dye testing time.
In my classes we had been using Kate Wells' book Fabric Dyeing and Printing and prior to that, Proctor and Lew's Surface Design for Fabric. Now, 16 years later, Holly's excellent book has arrived and is the handbook of the hour. It is up to date, comprehensive and thorough, and should be in everyone's library that works with dyes, textile paints and cloth. It improves on and surpasses every handbook published to date and encompasses a massive amount of information.
I look forward to using it in my classes for many years to come and I salute Holly for the enormous amount of work that went into creating this book. She has provided a gift for the entire surface design community both here and abroad.

Master Craftman Level Surface Design.......2007-07-14
This book is so complete that you nearly do not need any other books for working with surface design, dyeing and all processes related to fibre arts.
Congratualtions to the author, Holly Brackman for putting together the most comprehensive manual ever.
too much to digest.......2007-06-30
I had hoped for a book that had practical suggestions for using surface design in mixed media and art quilt work. So much of this book is devoted to very technical dye processes that I find only a small portion of it is actually of help to me. If I wasn't already a bit afraid of dying my own fabric, I certainly am now!

Book Description
Early textile dyers signed oaths that they would not reveal any of the process. Fortunately, author Carolyn Dahl openly shares the secrets of dyeing, painting, and patterning beautiful cloth she has gleaned in art schools. This guide is the next best thing to having a master artist in the studio.
Entertaining stories awaken memories of childhood coloring books, leaf prints, iron-on designs, and the tie-dyed T-shirts most of us experienced at some point in our lives. Readers will be inspired as they follow step-by-step photographs and instructions full of hints and secrets for using luminous color to transform white cloth into artistic masterpieces. Connoisseurs of the decorative arts and those who are merely curious about the fabrics they wear and use in everyday life will find much to interest them.
* Produce successful results without an instructor * Author relates own experiences, telling why a technique is done, giving more control to the dyer * Contains lots of fresh ideas
Customer Reviews:
CLEAR and PRECISE.......2007-09-03
I think it is the clarity and precision with which the author presents her ideas. Very good resource material for my daughter. She uses it!
Great Addition to My Fabric Painting Resource Library.......2006-03-30
I've already collected a number of painting/dyeing/surface design books for working with fabric, and this makes an excellent addition. I don't think it could stand alone as the be-all and end-all, but it is comprehensive in the sense that the author presents all kinds of ideas and inspiration, as well as photographs and instructions/resources. The one thing I might have found more helpful would be greater detail in the steps she took to achieve certain results. Although she does offer descriptions, it seems that sometimes steps and/or details of the process are missing.
Explains why.......2006-01-08
This book is particularly strong on explaining the theories behind the different fabric types and why they react as they do to dyes and paints. Some of the instructions are very clear and good photos of stamps and other printing techniques. I found the finished items and cloth a bit messy - not really my style. But a good addition to the library.
Comprehensive.......2005-10-05
This book is wonderfully comprehensive of the latest methods for embellishing with dyes and inks. I would have liked to have seen other artists results with her techniques, but I find the technical information more than compensates.
Wow!.......2005-09-22
I have read many "how to books" that are advertisments for their
products or books bragging about their wonderful artwork but this book tells all! It is very easy to understand and tells
exactly how to get the results wanted. What a refreshing change!

Customer Reviews:
The Twisted Sisters Sock Workbook.......2007-08-09
The directions for mixing dyes and using them to dye and paint roving and yarn are excellent. They are clearly written and illustrated. The directions for socks are equally well written and easy to follow. The photographs are wonderful and make me want to make almost all of the projects!
Great Photography, Spinning Section Could be Stronger.......2007-04-10
This book lived up to my expectations in some areas, but not others. I don't really blame it for coming a bit short because it tries to do so much. It aims to be a guide through the process of dyeing, spinning, designing, and knitting socks. I found the dyeing section highly useful. The differences between hot pour and cold pour dyeing are clearly discussed with large, clear step by step photos. In general, the photography in this book is one of its best attributes. I also learned a lot in the section discussing how to manipulate a painted roving to obtain a wide variety of effects in the finished yarn. I was a bit disappointed in the scant coverage of the technical aspects of spinning. Vogel prefers singles or 2-ply yarns, while I was looking for advice on how to spin a sturdy 3-ply for durable socks. The sock knitting section contains pretty standard info, but may be more complete than other books. Short-row, heel flap, and several types of afterthought heel are discussed, with information on mending and reknitting each type.
Another frontier.......2007-03-09
This book is like playing a video game where you reach higher and higher levels. It is an adventure in new experiences, and takes sock knitting up a notch. All I need to do now is raise and sheer my own sheep to spin the yarn and I've come full circle! This is a must-have for the adventurer.
A Great Reference Book.......2007-01-14
As a spinner, dyer and knitter of socks, I find this book an excellent addition to my library. It is easy to follow and well illustrated, with good information about the wool to choose for spinning. Lots of great ideas for dyeing and keeping colours alive and easy instructions for newcomers to sock knitting. It has my recommendation anytime.
For those of us who spin, knit, dye... but still don't knit socks!.......2007-01-07
I spent a few days in bookstores picking up every single book on spinning, knitting and dyeing because I wanted to dye a silk/ wool blend i created and wanted specifically to knit socks... a problem i have had!
This is a TREASURE of a book and one that will be very well worn!
Although the book is not thick it is well worth the price. You will learn about dyeing roving to create gorgeous yarns, a Kool aid technique, some hints and tips on making the dye process easier.. and then the piece de resistance... how to make PERFECT Socks!!
The chart on gauge, including Wpi and what needle is best for that, and the detailed chart on sock guage.. it is a wonderful thing.. and something i did not find in internet searches.
It is fun, colorful and very inspiring.. and a definite must have to add to your knit or spin library! I only wish I could sit and spin or knit with these gals... what talent..and gorgeous socks fall from their needles.. I think NOW i can finally knit socks well and definitely without second sock syndrome!
See my first fiber spun in many years at [...]
When i get the rest of the yardage complete ( 325 yds) will be knitting socks!!
GET THIS, you won't regret it!

Dyes & Paints: A Hands-On Guide to Coloring Fabric.......2007-08-07
This book is well illustrated and the instructions for dyeing are easy to follow. It contains just the right amount of information in a clear and concise manner. It's a good jumping off point if you are interested in dyeing fabrics.
Get the out the Rubber Gloves and Apron.......2007-06-30
If you want a primer on working with fiber-reactive dyes and textile pigments, this is it! This is not a project book. This book gives you the technical know-how to work confidently with fiber-reactive dyes and textile paints. It also demonstrates a number of methods for applying these coloring agents to fabric (natural fiber content). The techniques and processes are described in a clear, concise manner. Every technique is introduced with a short descriptive paragraph and separate equipment and supply lists. The technique is then broken down into numbered steps. Along with the instructions the author includes hint and tip boxes in the outer margins of the pages. . . . and there really is some valuable information in those boxes. Despite the many tip boxes, charts, photos and illustrations, the pages are uncluttered and visually easy to follow. In addition to the instructional text, you'll find many beautiful examples of how other artists applied these techniques to their work. This book is well worth the price.
Dyes and Paints.......2007-06-09
This book is informative, easy to read. I especially like the colored pages.
Excellent Purchase.......2007-05-13
Book was in excellent condition. Author's description of procedures was very clear and easy to read. Good resource to go back to again and again.
ENLIGHTENING.......2007-01-12
I bought this book on a whim as it was offered as a special with my last order and am I glad. I have dabbled a fair amount with fabric dyeing and on opening the book wondered whether I had done the right thing. This book is a must no matter at what stage you are with your dyeing expertize. It is full of good basic grassroots info and tips and I learnt an awful lot more going thru the book and cannot wait to start 'playing'.

Customer Reviews:
Less than Expected.......2006-11-03
While this book is great for people with absolutly no textile experiance, it was too basic for me. The pictures may spark your creativity but the techniques are simplistic and can be found by searching free on the net. Unless you are a beginer don't bother.
Buyer beware.......2005-04-08
Be warned: This book is an amalgamation of 'Colour and Design on Fabric' and 'Fabric Artistry' from the Singer Design series. I didn't discover this until it arrived here in New Zealand by which time it was too late and it wasn't worth the postage to send it all the way back to the US for a refund.
Wonderful creative inspiration!.......2004-04-05
I'm always looking for books to inspire me to creative something unique whether it is utilizing sewing or painting techniques. This book does both and more. I love the galleries provided in each chapter! Few books have inspired me to make notes of my ideas while I am reading, but this one did. On my first "run thru", I noted 8 different ideas and outfits to make. Now I've got to go get started! Great book!
Great Resource with Many Techniques A MUST read.......2003-09-25
I found this book to be a great resource and it has great color images and specific easy to follow instructions that can be used by both intermediate or beginner alike. Great gallery shots of award winning designers. I am an aspiring couture artist and have found that most books don't cover or illustrate high fashion techniques or projects and this one is the answer to my prayers!!! A must read
Worthwhile "Encyclopedia" of Techniques.......2002-06-13
There isn't anything earth-shattering in this book, but it is a good "all-in-one-place" resource for a variety of fiber arts techniques. Topics covered include: making wool felt, pinweaving, devore (FiberEtch), beading, needlelace, machine openwork, quilting and trapunto, various dyeing methods, and many others. The instructions are basic but clear and well-illustrated with photographs. Not a place to look for indepth instructions for any technique, but if you are looking for an overview, you'll really like this one. It's a great jumping off place to play with several techniques and see which ones you'd like to explore further. Those with more experience may find a new idea or two, but will probably be most interested in the fabulous galleries (one at the beginning of each of the books two sections - "Texture & Depth" and "Color & Design") of projects (mostly wearable art) by the contributors. These galleries are well worth a look; there's plenty of inspiration to be found.

Valuable resource on dyes and fabric paints.......2000-06-03
The name turned me away at first, as I am not dyeing for the theater. That was a mistake. While I don't need the chapters on how to set up a dye shop for a theatre, other information provided in this book is hard to come by elsewhere. Covers fiber reactive dyes, acid dyes, 1:2 metal complex dyes, direct dyes, basic dyes for acrylics, disperse dyes, metallics, textile paints, screen printing, 4 different discharge dyeing pastes, batik, blue printing and brown printing on fabric (or whole garments) using light, marbling, airbrush. Much more thorough treatment of potential hazards than any other dyeing book I've seen. Lists of carcinogenic dyes to avoid. Actual test results of fabric feel and fastness of many different textile paints, each on six different fibers. Good index.

Plus Ultra, this is Beyond Marbeling.......2006-10-10
An amazing book. I was familiar with the standard marbled papers you see in old (and new) books, but this book shows dozens of styles that I not only had never seen, but would not have even thought possible. Stunning works that are not at all typical "marbling." Gabriele Grunebaum's oil marbleing is really astonishing. The techniques are clearly demonstrated with photographs and diagrams. Buy this book!
Definitely the ultimate!.......2003-11-27
I was really interested i learning to do paper marbeling - had looked all around for kits to no avail so I went looking for books and came across this one. There are a number of different techniques in here: Sumonagashi, oil color, watercolor, marbeling fabric and other materials and then the last chapter is "a gallery of contemporary marbeling." For each of the technique chapters it tells you the materials you need with pictures of them in case the words/descriptions aer not enough and then that's followed by a section on "basic techniques" that are specific to that technique. The writing is clear and straight forward and there are lots of good pictures to help. Following the basic instructions there are advanced instructions. Again, with good pictures and ideas. The end of the book has fabric as well as the gallery -I'm still a beginner so I haven't played around with fabric and the things in the gallery are pretty advanced but they sure are inspirational. For now I'll have fun with paper. Great book though - it has something for the beginner as well as the more advanced artist!
The Piesta Resistance.......2002-06-18

200 color images of marbeling designs are inspiring........2000-10-04
Marbling of fabric and paper has intrigued artesans for centuries. The Ultimate Marbling Handbook explores the art of marbling, materials used, techniques and beautiful images of marbled color captured on paper, fabric and other materials. The colors are vivid, designs are unique and imanigative. Marble patterns fascinate, from the random stone or rock, to the colors combed into repeating patterns, no two the same.
Advanced designs of many artists are shared and techniques are explained. Diane Maurer-Mathison is a gifted artist and has authored a beautiful book suitable for the beginning to experienced marble artist.
detailed and clear instructions.......2000-06-29
I have done Suminagashi marbling for years and have been tempted to move into other types of marbling but have been unable to find good detailed information on material and techniques.
Diane Maurer-Mathison is an old hand at marbling and she shares all her wisdom here. She starts with the easiest marbling techniques and moves into patterns that would challenge a master.
Not only does she tell you where to buy the tools you need she includes detailed instructions on how to make your own tools and grind your own pigments.
She even tells you how to marble fabric, your sneakers, wood, and anything else that will stand still.
And the colored illustrations are breathtaking! I opened the book in front of a friend and her daughters. We oohhed and aahhed over it for a good twenty minutes. It is truely inspiring.
Someone put a lot of time and effort into making this a clear and easy to use guide. I reccomend it highly.
