Special Edition Using Microsoft® Office 2007

THE ONLY OFFICE BOOK YOU NEED

We crafted this book to grow with you, providing the reference material you need as you move toward Office proficiency and use of more advanced features. If you buy only one book on Office 2007, Special Edition Using Microsoft® Office 2007 is the only book you need.

If you own a copy of Office 2007, you deserve a copy of this book! Although this book is aimed at the Office veteran, Ed and Woody’s engaging style will appeal to beginners, too. Written in clear, plain English, readers will feel as though they are learning from real humans and not Microsoft clones. Sprinkled with a wry sense of humor and an amazing depth of field, this book most certainly isn’t your run-of-the-mill computer book. You should expect plenty of hands-on guidance and deep but accessible reference material.

This isn’t your Dad’s Office! For the first time in a decade, Microsoft has rolled out an all-new user interface. Menus? Gone. Toolbars? Gone. For the core programs in the Office family, you now interact with the program using the Ribbon–an oversize strip of icons and commands, organized into multiple tabs, that takes over the top of each program’s interface. If your muscles have memorized Office menus, you’ll have to unlearn a lot of old habits for this version.

Ed Bott is an award-winning computer journalist and one of the most widely recognized voices in the computing world, with nearly two decades of experience as a writer and editor at leading magazines, such as PC World, PC Computing, and Smart Business. Ed has written many of Que’s all-time bestsellers, including Special Edition Using Office 2000, Special Edition Using Windows 98, and Special Edition Using Windows Me.

5 out of 5 stars Another good book from the Special Edition Series.......2007-03-30

I have to learn Office 2007 enough to teach it, and there aren't many books out yet for it. The Special Edition series is one that I use for a desktop reference for several programs, and this one goes with them. It's clear, not cute or condescending, has good content, and is easy to refer to with questions. It's a good book to keep on hand as you learn Office 2007.

5 out of 5 stars good resource.......2007-09-29

I purchased this book to use to get acquainted with my new vista software. It helped me to solve some small inital problems. But as I read through the book it showed me lots of ways to make my computer work better for me. It is a great reference book. It is something I will pick up and check as I continue to work with vista.

5 out of 5 stars Windows Vista users Must Have.......2007-08-04

This book is a must have for Windows Vista users. It is literally 9,yes,9 books in one! It is great!!! It tells you everything you need to know, and otherwise would have no way of knowing,by the way, about Windows Vista and all its vast programs and files. It will serve as an invaluable desk reference and no doubt anyone could benefit from it. It is very user friendly and written in layman's terms. Very Good!

4 out of 5 stars Mac OS 10 to Vista.......2007-06-11

I am a long time Mac user and have just moved to Windows. This book was a big help and I highly recommend it. The index is great if you don't want to read from cover to cover.

4 out of 5 stars Something for everyone.......2007-05-31

I am more than satisfied with the content of this book; not only is it written in "user friendly" language, it helped me to understand three different items of concern. There are chapters I probably will not use; but I have already turned to it many times as a reference. I don't believe you could be disappointed in the information.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Dummies so far.......2007-05-23

Windows Vista All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies is one of the best
desktop reference books I now own. Came to my attention just in the nick of time when I was floundering around in the new Vista OS & solved one of my worst problems with the first chapter!

2 out of 5 stars Not useful for the gardener or landscaper.......2007-09-19

This book is intended for plant scientists, and I was astounded to find how useless a gigantic tome like this can be to a gardener. For starters, in 1188 pages there are zero photos. There is zero color. There's a huge number of amateur black ink drawings that suggest major details of leaves, etc., but no refinements. For visual identification purposes this book is near-useless, so it cannot be thought of as a woody plant encyclopedia. Also, the author has a peculiar manifest of political correctness: he won't speak ill of a plant. So, for example, the discussion of Rhus never mentions that at least three species (poison ivy, oak, sumac) are known for inducing allergic skin reaction after contact. You'd better know that and be able to recognize these because to Dirr that's unmentionable. Nor can I find mention that any berry, leaf, or bark is poisonous though to be fair, I didn't check all 1188 pages. Nor will I; I exchanged my copy for the same author's "Hardy Trees and Shrubs" which is what I should have bought to begin with. It has everything the scientific Manual lacks. That's Dirr's book for gardeners, and still gives you a taste of his political correctness peccadilloes.

5 out of 5 stars Dirr is the Most Comprehensive.......2007-07-05

I am an OSU Master Gardener and we are taught to look to the best experts when we research information for ourselves or to give out to the public. This book, Dirr's "Manual of Woody Landscape Plants" and Carl Whitcomb's "Know It and Grow It III" are the best references a person can use when researching woody trees and shrubs for a landscape. Although Whitcomb's book has a map showing regions where the plant would grow best, Dirr's book has by far more trees and shrubs reviewed with more cultivars listed also. Additionally, Dirr's book is listed entirely by scientific name making it easy to locate information about a plant quickly.

5 out of 5 stars "Manual" is the right name for this book........2007-03-06

I bought this book because other books that I have by Dirr are worth every cent I have spent on them. This book is no different. No glossy pictures are present, but instead there are excellent, detailed line drawings of the identifying features of plant leaves and twigs. What this book does offer that other books I have read do not, is exhaustive information on just about every woody plant one might ever encounter. This book is a true "manual"; it is packed with information on every aspect of selecting, planting, managing, and propagating woody plants.

I doubt this book is essential for the casual gardener, but if you want a serious treatment of trees and shrubs for reference, this book is just what you are seeking. I bought the hardback because I knew that this is a book that will need to take years of abuse.

5 out of 5 stars The best textbook I've ever bought.......2007-02-26

Easily worth ten times the price; an indispensable guide for any horticultural student. Contains encyclopedic knowledge, written in a friendly and approachable way. My copy is already tagged with post-its and notes in the margins; I will no doubt be using this regularly for my whole career.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource.......2007-02-12

This is a wonderful book for those with at least moderate plant knowledge. Very valuable for looking up the difference between varities, but there are no color pictures.

Eating raw isn't just for naturalists anymore. Today, health-conscious eaters are filling their plates with the foods nature has already prepared. And these foods go well beyond the sprouts, carrots, and celery typically associated with this type of diet.

In Living Cuisine, celebrated raw chef Renée Underkoffler shows how varied, exciting, and healthy raw-foods cuisine can be. She introduces the many benefits of eating raw and offers guidelines for incorporating this healthier regimen into one's lifestyle. She provides clear, step-by-step instructions for raw-foods processing techniques-juicing, sprouting, culturing and fermenting, dehydrating, and even blanching.

At the heart of Living Cuisine are the more than 300 tantalizing recipes inspired by a wide range of ethnic and regional foods. These beverages, soups, salads, appetizers, side dishes, sushi, entrees, and desserts are all delicious and simple to prepare. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book for the uninitiated (to a raw food diet).......2007-09-30

I am just exploring the raw food lifestyle for health reasons. I purchased 4 recommended cookbooks, and found this one to be heads and shoulders above the rest. It has great recipes, that go as far as to describe the texture you should be looking for as you process the food. She goes into detail about sprouting and making nut milks, which I was greatful to find at last. She opened my eyes to the variety of foods I have overlooked, and to the amount of food I waste, for example taking seeds from my squashes and broccoli for sprouting instead of tossing them, and using the pared scraps from food for juicing. I highly recommend this book, expecially for a beginner.

5 out of 5 stars BEST Raw Book!.......2007-09-24

This book is AWESOME - I've made tons of things and they are so tasty and satisfying, that it's completely transitioning me away from cooked food and wheat/grain products effortlessly. I've lost almost 20 lbs in 6 weeks, just a bi-product of adopting a pure, healthy, vegan way of eating. I don't feel any deprivation or pine for anything, mostly due to her book. I have other raw books that I found either too complex or just so-so in the taste of the end result - her recipes, to me, are mostly simple, with accessible/common ingredients, and with an end-result of gourmet perfection. The Pear Torte - oh, my! - my 8 year old son just couldn't get enough! (and I can hardly wait to make the Choconot Mousse Pie!) I look forward every day to making her recipes, and for years to come because there are so many in here.

I disagree with some of the other reviewers that the food index is a waste of time. I think her point is to open your eyes to the plethora and abundance of the plant food kingdom - to focus on the amazing variety available to us. No one can ask "Well WHAT do you eat??" with an index like that available for you to learn about and make your new pantry. The colorless bread and potatoes on my counter top have been replaced with a beautiful and vibrant array of fruits and vegetables: bananas, avocados, strawberries, tomatoes, coconuts, dates, nuts and so much more - my new staples. I feel inspired every day to cook and eat! (And of course so much healthier.)

I also love that there's a tad of steaming/blanching, etc, because for me, eating raw broccoli and asparagus, etc. is just not an option. I think with that slight adjustment this way of eating is not only doable, but WAY preferred over my old way of eating (vegetarian version of the SAD diet). Many kudos to Renee - thank you, thank you!!

5 out of 5 stars Best raw bang for your buck!.......2007-09-23

What a lovely book. It's big and very useful. Even the layout is soft and engaging.

The first roughly half of the book covers an extensive description about every type of utensil you will need to make these dishes. I read that this annoyed one person, however I feel that breaking down all the different types of juicers would be of benefit to those that don't have one.

Renee also gets into lots of detail on things like good oils and salts, sprouting and even cutting techniques.

With over 300 recipes I think has got to be the best value for money. It covers a wide range of topics so you are going to find plenty of foods you are going to love. Plenty of nut / seed milks and cheeses, pies, quiches - it's got them all.

Some dishes are quick and simple, while others are more complex, but oh what a taste.

I found the book has just enough white space in the margins for me to jot down my notes on each dish. The only thing that could be improved is a thicker card for the cover as it is a reference book. I feel mine got doggy eared quicker than normal. Only a minor issue that can be compensated for with a bit of clear sticky covering like in school.

Don't let that put you off though the content is what you buy the book for and its got plenty of that - Good on you Renee and team.

1 out of 5 stars If I wanted a kitchen inventory, I'd look in the kitchen...........2007-09-09

Approximately 175 pages of this book is dedicated to dull descriptions of fruits, vegetables, and a complete inventory of kitchen appliances and tools. I couldn't even bear to get to the recipes, so I can't comment on them.

It might not be so bad if things like nutritional value, interesting uses, or complementary foods were identified, but this book wastes a tree describing the most basic features of apples to yams.

You'll really want to poke your eyes out when you get to the kitchen inventory. If the author had focused on things that make a raw kitchen complete, that would probably be ok, but if I wanted a description of a spatula I would hand one to a 5 year old and get something more interesting.

If you are seriously looking for good information and recipes for a raw food diet, check out Raw Food/Real World: 100 Recipes to Get the Glow or Raw: The Uncook Book: New Vegetarian Food for Life. Both have provided us with valuable information and delicious recipes.

4 out of 5 stars okay book.......2007-08-17

Was any editor involved before publishing? Half of the book provide little or zero information. I mean author describe every single piece of food, like broccoli for example. Even pork chop eaters are familiar with vegetables and fruits this author describes. It is good to know your audience. And raw food audience is much more advanced. So forget half of the book and go to recipes. I found it interesting that some of the food is steamed. Now how can that be raw?! Of course the middle part could be uncooked, but that's the same as eating stir fried vegies. The nuts used in recipes--not all of them are sprouted. I did not try that many recipes, so my review is incomplete, but from what I tried, the recipes are hit and miss. Certainly they are easy to prepare and some of them are EXTREMELY delicious --these make this book worthy to buy. My complaint is that there are no pictures. Why? With digital photography and cheap printing, I should have been inspired. I looked when this book was published (2003) and I think this author-chef is pioneer and others who followed perfected, derived inspiration from her recipes. Recipes are easy to make, it is true and this is really great part. Definitely very useful book for somebody who likes raw,but is not willing to commit life to food preparation:-)

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2006-02-25

Very complete and up to date information on Arboriculture. Chapters are well organized, highlighting what you need to know. Does a great job of covering the basics, but also gets into details and is fairly technical, without becoming unreadable. A must have reference book for the Landscaper.

5 out of 5 stars Overflowing with information.......2003-06-24

Arboriculture is a science and art that is made up of many different contributing factors. This book does a very good job of covering them all. Any one of the chapters could be expanded into a book in itself. This thoroughly researched and written book is for the person who wants all of their information in one place. It is a textbook for the technically minded arborist, tree surgeon, tree farmer, or hobbyist. Don't look for this book to be entertaining or philosophical. Instead, buy this book for the knowledge held within. There is a lot to be learned from it. Every single page is filled with facts, figures, methods, and recommendations. You will find yourself reading every page a second or third time in order to catch it all. I refer back to this book on a regular basis, because there is no way I can remember it all. If you have any questions about the management of trees or shrubs, you will likely find it in this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Book.......2000-01-09

Harris wrote the first edition of this book when trees were "trimmed" by the same people who patched asphalt and repaired park benches. It was a breath of rationality in a field that relied mostly on anecdotal information.

The new edition reinforces this work as the compendium of current thinking about how to care for trees. Clark and Matheny build eloquently on Harris's solid foundation.

The public participates actively in caring for trees and demands to know information found in this book. Why not plant the biggest caliper tree you can find? Can't you do something about the tree roots "breaking" up my sewer? Open the book and show them the brief but definitive answer that is easily found here.

I wish more citizen tree advocates would read this book. For that matter, I wish more arborists would too.

5 out of 5 stars A book by a pro for the professional propagator.......2002-01-23

I propagated woody plants as a sideline business for a number of years and considered this book THE source. For many species, specific concentrations for rooting hormones are specified. This is invaluable information since for many plants there is an optimal concentration and using a higher or lower concentration of reduces rooting success rates as well as root development.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Dirr is the Absolute Expert in Plant Propagation.......2000-09-03

Dirr has done all the research and you reap all the rewards. His conclusions are backed up by many scientific studies by various individuals and groups. The first part gives a summary of the diferent propagation methods and the second part has very detailed data on specific species. I save hundreds of dollars each year by propagating by own southern magnolias, red tip photinas, and navel oranges. This is, by far, the best book on propagation out there!!

5 out of 5 stars Woody Plant Propagation.......2000-04-19

Uncertain which manual would be best, the reviews on this book were so good that I selected it. I'd have to say it's the best all-around propagation manual I've seen for woody plants. The only problem: now I have not only detailed info on desired plant material, but also want to try SO many others!

After three decades of prodigious film work (and some unfortunate tabloid adventures as well), it's easy to forget that Woody Allen began his career as one heck of a great comedy writer. Getting Even, a collection of his late '60s magazine pieces, offers a look into Allen's bag of shtick, back when it was new. From the supposed memoirs of Hitler's barber: "Then, in January of 1945, a plot by several generals to shave Hitler's moustache in his sleep failed when von Stauffenberg, in the darkness of Hitler's bedroom, shaved off one of the Führer's eyebrows instead..."

Even though the idea of writing jokes about old Adolf--or addled rabbis, or Maatjes herring--isn't nearly as fresh as it used to be, Getting Even still delivers plenty of laughs. At his best, Woody can achieve a level of transcendent craziness that no other writer can match. If you're looking for a book to dip into at random, or a gift for someone who's seen Sleeper 13 times, Getting Even is a dead lock.

5 out of 5 stars Getting Even = Hilarious.......2007-08-14

Getting Even, by Woody Allen, is the comedic genious at his ludicrous best. The reparte between the two chess playing opponents, via e-mail, is worth the price of the book alone. Very funny.

A 5 star delight.

5 out of 5 stars Woody Allen. Chess By Mail. need i say more? also, mafia.......2006-08-20

accounting [of the office supplies] ~

these two ALONE are worth the price of admission, especially used in the z shops...

i can STILL laugh over the Gossage-Vardebedian papers [the chess by mail] 30+ years after i first bought this for a friend in the hospital [i wasn't thinking ~ he'd had a hernia operation... and couldn't get past the first line]

timelessly funny ~

5 out of 5 stars Getting Even.......2006-01-04

If your a fan of Allen's work than you'll enjoy this book. Otherwise you may not like it. If you're not familiar with his work than I highly recommend his prose for their witty, bizzare, and humorus content.

In, "The Gossage-Vardebedian Papers," you'll find humor in the trials and tribulations of chess, via letter writing.

In, "Mr. Big," I question if the beautiful existentialist really killed God. Yeah, she probably did. (GOD that's too bad.)

awkward, funny, weird, smart, read...

3 out of 5 stars Bad taste, boring stupidity with an occasional funny line.......2005-12-04

I had hoped upon rereading this work to cancel the original impression I had of many of these pieces when I read them some years ago in 'The New Yorker'. Unfortunately, my taste seems not to have changed and I found most of these pieces stupid, and in bad taste.
Allen can write the occasional very funny line but much of this is low- level predictable parody.

4 out of 5 stars As funny as as dated as the early Woody Allen comedies.......2005-10-19

Getting Even is one of three early collections of Woody Allen's short humorous articles. The others are Without Feathers and Side Effects. Many of the pieces in Getting Even appeared in magazines, mostly The New Yorker, but also Playboy, and Evergreen Review. While others first appeared in this anthology. In total, there are 17 articles in the collection. Considering that they were written over 35 years ago, there are some references that do not come across well today. Yet as a group they are still quite funny.

The Metterling Lists is a piece of satirical literary criticism of The Collected Laundry Lists of Hans Metterling Vol. 1, a supposedly scholarly work of 437 pages that analyzes the first six laundry lists. Fortunately Mr. Allen only takes seven pages to mock this fictional piece of scholarship.

A Look At Organized Crime provides a very brief history of organized crime in America including the murder of Kid Lipsky by Albert (The Logical Positivist) Corillo who locked Lipsky in a closet and "sucked all the air out through a straw." It also provides a description of a Mafia initiation ceremony and ends with some tips on fighting mobsters.

The Schmeed Memoirs are represented as the recollections of Hitler's barber. Yet they can't be taken too seriously because he claims he didn't know Hitler was a Nazi and thought he worked for the phone company. There is a funny where Hitler fears that Chruchill will grow sideburns before he can. It is humorous to view World War II from the perspective of Hitler's hair.

My Philosophy consists of the Critique of Pure Dread, the Eschatological Dialectics As a Means of Coping with Shingles, and The Cosmos on Five Dollars a Day. It ends with two Parables and a short list of Aphorisms.

Yes, But Can The Steam Engine Do This? provides a humorous take on the scientific research saga with a history of the Earl of Sandwich's research into developing the sandwich. Starting with his birth in 1718, the tale is filled with bread experiments, research into cold cuts and cheeses, and years of failures followed by his final success and lasting fame.

Death Knocks is a short play in which an inexperienced angel of death, who comes to claim Nat Ackerman's soul, is lured into a losing game of gin rummy and returns empty-handed.

Spring Bulletin is Woody Allen's satirical take on college course descriptions. It includes a course called Introduction to God which is described as "Confrontation with the Creator of the universe through informal lectures and field trips."

The next piece, a guide to the interpretation of Hassidic tales, includes tales like the following and Mr. Allen's interpretations of them.
A man journeyed to Chelm to seek the advice of Rabbi Ben Kaddish.
"Rabbi " the man asked, "where can I find peace?"
The Hassid surveyed him and said, "Quick, look behind you!"
The man turned around, and Rabbi Ben Kaddish smashed him in the back of the head with a candlestick. "Is that peaceful enough for you?" he chuckled.
There are six other tales and their interpretations in this piece.

The Gossage-Varbedian Papers tells the sad story of a chess game played at a distance via letters. The correspondence starts out with a missive from Gossage stating that one of his letters must have gotten lost in the mail since his chess board is set up differently than Verbedian's. The insults and the confusion worsen as the letters go back and forth. A must for any chess fan.

Notes From The Overfed, Mr. Allen claims, was inspired by reading Dostoyevski and a Weight Watchers magazine on an airplane trip. In it an Atheist is converted when he decides that, if God is everywhere, He must be in food. Then consuming everything in sight, he achieves sanctity and obesity through compulsive eating.

A Twenties Memory mocks the name-dropping memoirs of the post-war lost generation. Filled with references to Gertrude Stein, Picasso, Earnest Hemingway, Alice B. Toklas, and many others, a non-entity tries to gain fame by the shared light of his famous contemporaries.

In Count Dracula the famous vampire wakes up early due to confusion caused by a solar eclipse, and visits the baker and his wife for what he thinks is an evening snack with disastrous consequences.

In A Little Louder, Please a true afficionato of the arts confesses his one failing - an inability to understand the gestures of mimes.

Conversations With Helmholtz consists of notes taken by the student of a famous elderly psychoanalyst of their conversations together. Senility has certainly gotten the better of the older man, but his reputation and fame keep the younger man from realizing this with humorous results.

Viva Vargas is subtitled Excepts From The Diary of A Revolutionary, and reveals much of the same humor that the author later used in the movie Bananas.

The Discovery And Use of The Fake Ink Blot provides a humorous social history of a device used in practical jokes.

The last story in the volume, Mr. Big, is my favorite. It is narrated by a Philip Marlowesque detective who is hired by a lovely woman claiming to be a Vassar student. She wants him to find a missing person, God. The mixture of Raymond Chandler's format with the existential search for the meaning of life is extremely funny even after the passage of many years.

All in all, if you like the early Woody Allen movies, you will love this book - even though some of the material is no longer as fresh.

Book Description

Five years ago, journalist and practicing Buddhist Woody Hochswender co-authored a book on Buddhism that focused on the teachings of Nichiren, a 13th-century Japanese monk who has become the spiritual teacher for more than 20 million Buddhists worldwide. That book, which is in its 10th printing and has sold more than 80,000 copies, was such a resounding success that Hochswender has written an insightful new work—at once a follow-up to the previous volume and a freestanding work of its own. A new breath of inspiration, The Buddha in Your Rearview Mirror speaks to the spiritual yearnings so many of us have amid the hustle and flux of contemporary life.

The book is a sophisticated but accessible introduction to Buddhism as well as an in-depth study of Buddhism in the Samurai period. Hochswender again focuses on the philosophy of Nichiren and applies its principles to everyday issues ranging from health to careers to family problems. The Buddha in Your Rearview Mirror is both cogent and compelling—informative history and inspiring self-help. Ideal for the novice or veteran Buddhist, the book will resonate with anyone interested in concrete methods for tapping into their own highest potential or enlightened self.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular read.......2007-09-24

This book allows an inside view and understanding of the most dynamic buddhist sect in the 21st century. The concepts are very deep yet simply put in a way that anyone can truly comprehend. I highly recommend!!

5 out of 5 stars I see myself clearly.......2007-08-16

William James, a hundred years ago, played a major part in establishing the dominant philosophical system underpinning American beliefs--pragmatism. In essence, truth is what brings good, what value one derives from belief. In assessing religious beliefs, this comports well with Hochswender's explanation of Buddhism generally and the Nichiren Buddhism of the SGI that he focuses on in this book. The first President of the lay organization of Buddhists that Hochswender profiles was a follower of John Dewey in terms of educational theory and no doubt along with his pragmatic views Dewey held in concert with his associate James. All this history is just to point to the fact that a seemingly Oriental religion has a surprisingly profound correlation to American thought. Moreover, in evaluating the benefit of one Buddhist sect or another, it becomes clear that applying a simple "the proof is in the pudding" analysis, Nichiren Buddhism indeed is worth testing. It is the largest Buddhist sect in Japan and probably worldwide for the reason that its simple practice works. The Rearview Mirror book is broader and more comprehensive than the earlier book that Hochswender coauthored with Greg Martin and Ted Morino. In my opinion, either is a good introduction to Buddhism but the more recent one may be better for the younger or more cerebral type of reader.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for Buddhists 101.......2007-07-20

Very lively and wonderful book. Answers a lot of questions even for an 'old' buddhist practitioner like. Keep cranking it out, Woody!

Young people who I gave this book to as gifts have responded very very positively to it.

4 out of 5 stars Buddha In your rear view mirror.......2007-06-05

I know enjoyed this book. Easy to read and I feel that I learned a lot about Buddhism.
I would recommend it to someone who is looking for an armchair explanation of Buddhism. Even thought I might try some of the suggestions.

3 out of 5 stars Great ideas, but "mankind" does NOT include women!.......2007-04-05

Do men feel included when I say "womankind?" Because I mean everyone when I say it, and at least the spelling includes "man!"

Women have been written out of the language for centuries! Why do men and unconscious women think that "man" and "he" and "his" include both genders? It's because men haven't been written out of the language, so very few of them have an inkling of what it feels like to not be considered.

Neil Postman said 'language creates thought, thought doesn't create meaning in language.' If you say "mankind" enough, even if you think at first you are envisioning women included, you naturally stop picturing women in the idea. It's like how your mind doesn't notice negatives: if you focus on what you don't want, you're actually creating it. Same idea here.

It started on page 11, then he used male pronouns, "mankind," and "man" enough times I closed the book and handed it to my roommate. Even after having it explained many times, my roommate doesn't care, and doesn't get that women are excluded in word and thought. How can he fathom it? He's not being written out, discriminated against, paid less... In other ways, he's a pretty fair man, and accepts women as we are.

He thought it was an inspiring book.

If Woody wants to fix the language and put out a version that includes women, I'll be excited to read it. I thought that since SGI was being so careful about including us in the language, and he's a long-time SGI member, he would include me and I would enjoy it. This is not a poor translation, this is his native language: written only with men in mind.

Thanks a lot, Ms. Hochswender.

5 out of 5 stars Always an Elsa Beskow Fan.......2007-01-16

This is not my favorite Beskow book, but it is still a delightful, engaging story with beautiful illustrations! These stories are as enjoyable for the adults reading them as they are for the children. I also highly recommend The Forest Children and The Flowers Festival, but really, all of her books are worth owning!

5 out of 5 stars Sweet story!.......2007-01-07

This book is so darling and charming. For some reason, when I cracked it open, I thought it would be too quiet for Benny (7) and too slow for Sadie (2). No. They were both riveted. It is a very precious little story about tiny little people who live in trees -- we never ascertained whether they were fairies or pixies or what. They have a little adventure and then everyone has a party. It's the detail of the illustrations, the thoughtful way in which this little world is completely imagined, and the boldness of the "naughty" children who go off on an oak leaf and end up delivering beards to trolls. Very good story! The children give it four thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars Elsa Beskow books are classic and warm.......2005-06-16

We love all of her books and buy them 1 at a time as we can afford them. In an age of big in your face pop up books and childrens books that make your eyes hurt these books are a wonderful find. As always the illustrations are beautiful with one big picture per page and the words on the opposite page. I read all the reviews first but few had actual specifics about the actual invdividual stories, so that's what I've done here. I hope it helps others know what wonderful books they are. I wish they were easier to find in Canada. Anyhow this is one of our latest purchases, It's about 2 boys Woody and Little Pip that are supposed to go out and gather acorns for the coming winter. It's very windy and they decide to go for a ride on the leaves that are being tossed high in the air, but the wind carries them far away and they crash in on some old women gnomes who are doing the wash of gnome beards. Pipand Woody end up having to deliver all the dried beards back to their owners. In the meantime Mrs. Acorn their mom is getting worried... along comes Mr. Squirrel who offers to go in search of them. Off he goes but doesn't realize little Hazel is hiding in his tail. He searches for the boys but has to stop and ddrop off hazel on toadstool as she is too dizzy to continue. He tells her to stay there, but she goes to help a lizard who is upset that 2 gnomes are in the hollow tree he cleaned for his friend mr. hedgehog. So she goes to check it out and it turns out to be Pip and Woody disguised as gnomes because of a troll who chased after them. The 3 of them decide to go home on a raft they built and they leave mr. lizard. On the way down the river they come upon the 3 chestnut boys who help them repair the raft after they accidentally damaged it. In the meantime Mr. squirrel finds woody, hazel and little pip and scolds them and takes them home. Mrs. acorn decides to throw a party for them even though mrs. hazelnut wonders if that is such a good idea since the children have been so naughty. The children are very sorry to have disappeared and Mrs. acorn lets them know she is thankful they are home. Mr. acorn arrives home with his 5 beetles in time for the party as they had been out planting oak trees. The party was fun with elves, bumble bees, mrs. fir, fieldmice and glow worms attending as well. Truly a magical tale!

5 out of 5 stars ELSA BESKOW -A GENTLE STORY TELLER!.......2000-11-15

Elsa Beskow's stories are over a half a century old. They are gentle and beautiful. Woody, Hazel and Little Pip are little forest children, belonging to the Acorn family. The children go on an unexpected adventure when they are swept up by an autumn wind. "Swirling and whirling" through the air on a leaf they are greeted by gnomes, a troll, a lizard and three little Chestnut boys. Nature is the essence of this story, as it is in many of Elsa's stories. This tale sparks the imagination of children and adult minds alike. I could sing praises Elsa and her stories for days on end. They are true classics.

Don't wait to sample Elsa's tales, for they are getting harder and harder to find.

The title of Woody Allen's second collection of New Yorker-style sprint humor is a sly comment on Emily Dickinson's famous quote, "Hope is the thing with feathers." Without Feathers delivers Allen's hopeless schlub persona--you remember, what he used to be before he was either a lecher or an auteur, depending on your politics. In addition to being as funny as anything published since, to read Without Feathers is to return to a simpler time, when being a fan of his work was common, not controversial.

Though each piece is funny, two of them are particularly notable examples of Allen's distinctive style (borrowed in large part from S.J. Perelman by way of the Borscht Belt, but distinctive, nevertheless)--"The Whore of Mensa" and "If the Impressionists Had Been Dentists." Here's an excerpt from the latter:

Mrs. Sol Schwimmer is suing me because I made her bridge as I felt it and not to fit her ridiculous mouth! That's right! I can't work to order like a common tradesman! I decided her bridge should be enormous and billowing, with wild, explosive teeth flaring up in every direction like fire! Now she is upset because it won't fit in her mouth! She is so bourgeois and stupid, I want to smash her! I tried forcing the false plate in but it sticks out like a star burst chandelier.
Without Feathers is fine, funny prose, from an American master. If you're a fan, seek it out immediately. It's a document from the days when Woody was not important, but merely hysterically funny. --Michael Gerber

4 out of 5 stars May Be Without Feathers, But Its with Humor.......2007-08-14

Without Feathers, by Woody Allen, is a witty humorous book with 15 or so short essays/stories on a variety of topics. The humor here is very funny and not dated at all. You most pay close attention as the one-liners fly off the pages. Simply hilarious stuff. Hard to believe this was released in 1975.

A recommended 4 star effort!

4 out of 5 stars Woody Allen"s Without Feathers.......2007-01-18

Well worth buying and reading. Reading a humor book of short stories by one author all at once is not as good as spacing each story by reading something else. Too much like eating three desserts at once.

5 out of 5 stars With out feathers.......2005-12-18

...worth the read!!! Allen's book is composed of a bunch of short stories, plots for operas, essays, plays etc. It's all hilarious. Once you start the book, you wont be able to put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully absurd..........2005-01-23

I have never written a review before, but as this book is one of the funniest things I've ever stumbled upon... here goes. I was lucky enough to find Without Feathers about 10 years ago, in a hardcover edition along with Getting Even and Side Effects. I decided to take a quick look through it on the drive home from the book store (I was'nt the one driving!) and within minutes I was laughing uncontrolably! After the first paragraph I simply could'nt put it down. The other people in the car demanded to know what was so funny, but my attempts to read out loud were useless as I was crying with laughter and could no longer see the page!?! I handed the book over to one of my friends for him to read, and eventually we had to pull the car off the road due to the histerical giggling that ensued! "A Brief, Yet Helpful, Guide To Civil Disobedience" is possibly the funniest thing I've ever read!?! A decade has gone by since I first read these books and they are still as funny and unique. I read them whenever I'm dangerously close to forgeting how cathartic sheer silliness can be! Truly joyful prose!

4 out of 5 stars Classic Allen.......2003-08-29

I was recommended this book because of the play "Death." I found the two plays to be much funnier than some of the short stories and essays. The short stories are written in the older style of Allen's humor. They are funny because Allen is constantly using unexpected silly plot twists. I found these silly twists to be a bit much at times. However, if you like his older movies then you will probably like the way he writes the short stories. The plays were, I thought, much more clever. They were still silly (of course) but they had more continuity than the short stories. In addition the unexpected still occurred frequently but it seems more in context, in the plays.

Regardless, this book is very funny and if you like Allen's movies, then you'll definitely find this book funny as well.
