The book was well researched and very well presented. The photography was excellent. For the money, this is a great book and a must have for all Zippo lighter collectors.

This book is excellent for the true collector who has been at it for a while. It list some old more wanted pieces along with some more recent pieces. I would not reccomend for a new Zippo collector though.

Adding some light to a legend.......2003-11-24
Still a classic after all these years, the Zippo folks keep to the basic rule, don't mess with rightness and success will follow. Endearing classics like the rural mailbox, Duracell batteries or a Stanley knife are simple solutions that stay with us decade after decade. The Zippo company did branch out in Sixties with a new line in table lighters, it was not a success.
This is a typical company history book (produced with their blessing) so don't expected any deep insight. The authors zip through the decades with anecdotes and factoids mixed in with plenty of photos, illustrations, period ads and dozens of pictures of lighters. The design of the book is the main reason I bought it. Strangely, for a conveniently small product, many of the lighters shown are either larger or smaller than the real thing, I would have thought it sensible to keep them all life size.
The company recognises that collectors buy more than thirty percent of sales and they capitalize on this by bringing out annual collections plus specials for any event that seems appropriate. A useful eight pages near the back of the book covers dating your Zippo, with photos of the bottom of the lighter which has a simple coding system.
If you are a collector of this world famous lighter this nice looking little book would be worth buying though I can't see the reason for the hefty price.

From the end of the Civil War until the explosive popularity of the cigarette in the early twentieth century. the cigar was king. For the pleasure and convience of cigar smokers a wide variety of smoking accessories were manufactured, including cigar cutters and lighters. The cutters range from simple vest pocket models to ingenious mechanical contraptions that would occupy a prominent place on the counter of the local tobacconist. In between are beautifully sculpted Vienna bronze and wooden desk models. In many cases these are combined with lighters, to offer the smoker full-service convenience. The lighters range from alcohol dips to electric devices. They are sometimes cast as stunning figures or are elegantly formed lamps, using blown glass or pierced tin. More than 2o books about collectible lighters have been published in the past years. Many are focused to specific lighter manufacturers. Books with a wide content, covering many different aspects of lighter collecting are scarce and often incomplete. This book is different. It gives a new collector the optimal idea about collectible lighters of this century. Fantastic models are shown in excellent quality and there is not much missing. I am a European collector for many years and I must say this book covers the global lighter collecting quite perfectly. In addition it is both affordable and handy. Congratulation to the editors-

This is a great book - a must have for anyone dealing in cigarette lighters. It is the only book I know of that gives such a complete over view of vintage lighters. A highly recommended read!

Nice pictures, but author knows nothing about Zippo! Captions don't fit the pictures, prices are way off, but its nice to look at. Would not use as a reference book.
Zippo Lighters Book-The Facts PLEASE.......2004-09-03
While the book has some interesting information on the subject of Zippo lighters, I feel too much space is used to show old magazine ads for Zippo lighters. This space could have been used for more pictures of actual Zippo lighters and updated pictures from inside the Zippo factory. The pictures of the plant itself show workers putting Zippos in the old flame boxes which were only used until 1976. The other main issue of my dissapointment was the apparent lack of research that went in to the writing of the book. There are many errors in the style names of lighters shown in the pictures as well as the values. The biggest error that stuck in my head was where they said Zippo manufacturing cleans the lighters before they return them to the customers after they go through the repair clinic.
It is unfortunate that Mr. Pope didn't have the opportunity to finish the book he started, perhaps more research of facts would have been done before publishing.
While the book that David Poore wrote years ago is a bit outdated on the values, it is a very valuable piece of reference material for the novice and seasoned Zippo collector. I would strongly encourage anyone thinking of buying a book on Zippos that they consider Mr. Poores book instead.

Waste of time and money, there was almost no information, not a Zippo in sight, all odd ball lighters, no details just quickie price information including sections on matches, holders and other non-lighter items. We needed a price guide to lighters, and this was not it. The only thing big about it, well there was nothing big about it, as a matter of fact there was not a big value, or even a big book, much smaller than most price guides.

Ad's book includes phantastic photography and an interesting concept regarding matching the things. The focus is not the jewel stuff one can always find in such books. It is the reflection of pure fascination of lighters, their history, function and the thrill of fire making history. Most important is the fact that the book adresses to the NON-collector as well as to the collector but more to the former. People that do not know anything about the subject will be fascinated by it. Although I am a collector I always read it again and again.
