Book Description
When Hannah dares to love across the boundaries of tradition, will she lose everything?
Despite being raised in a traditional Old Order Amish family, seventeen-year-old Hannah Lapp desires to break with custom, forgo baptism into the faith, and marry outside the cloistered community. She’s been in love with Mennonite Paul Waddell for three years, and before returning to college for his senior year, Paul asks Hannah to be his wife. Hannah accepts, aware that her marriage will change her relationship with her family forever.
On the evening of their engagement, tragedy strikes and in one unwelcome encounter, all that Hannah has known and believed is destroyed. As she finds herself entangled in questions that the Old Ways of her people cannot answer, Hannah faces the possibility of losing her place in her family, in her community–and in the heart of the man she loves.

When the Heart Cries.......2007-10-05
When the Heart Cries tells a story of Hannah Lapp who suffered a tragic experience. I felt like I was right there with Hannah Lapp suffering along with her. I shed a few tears while learning some Amish traditions. I immediately had to read book two as soon as I was finished reading When the Heart Cries and I am now impatiently looking forward to book three in this series!
Great series!.......2007-09-27
When I saw another series out with an Amish theme I thought, "Oh brother! Another one jumped on the bandwagon." But this is really a good series. I just finished the second one and am anxiously awaiting the third installment in the series. I heartily recommend this to those who love to read the Christian fiction genre...or just love a sweet story without all the heavy breathing!
Best book I've ever read.......2007-09-25
This is the best book I have ever read. You will not want this book to end. The great news is there is a sequel that's already out. "When The Morning Comes". Another great book by this author.
Not just another Amish novel.......2007-09-23
This book is grabs ahold of you and you cannot put it down. Amazing writing and story telling. The combination of romance, thrills, heartache and suspense leves you wanting more.
Cindy Woodsmall.......2007-09-21
I do not like the writting of Cindy Woodsmall. She seems to write of nothing but pain and misery and I do not believe she should use the Amish as her background. In my opinion her writting seems disrespectful to the Amish. I will not buy any more of her books.

Terrific Cookbook!.......2007-07-29
The recipes are hearty and filling, taste and look great too. My husband raves each time something new comes from this book!
--Very enjoyable--.......2006-04-20
COOKING FROM QUILT COUNTRY is a pleasure to read. The title comes from the fact that Amish and Mennonite people are famous for their quilt making skills.
This book gives a little background of the Mennonite and Amish sects and how they came into existence. The roots of the two groups originated with the Protestant Reformation and the Swiss Anabaptist movement. The leader was a Dutch priest by the name of Menno Simons.
This very informative book is filled with wonderful recipes and many photographs. Because the Mennonites and Amish have traditionally been farmers, they're also known for their wonderful foods. There are recipes for everyone here, but I was especially interested in the different vegetable dishes that are presented.

Cooking From Quilt Country is perfection.......2005-08-02
Cooking From Quilt Country is by far the best cookbook (and I have many) that I have ever seen. Whether you want to lose weight or gain weight , recipies can be adapted for your own use and taste . Best of all, recipies can be done "by the book itself". I would honestly say this could be the only cookbook one woulld ever need and definitely would make a lovely gift!
This is a wonderful cookbook........2005-06-18
There are dozens of recipes I want to try. I tried the custard cornbread and there will be no going back---this is my new favorite cornbread recipe. And I had an excellent recipe which was often requested, but this is head and shoulders above it! And what a beautiful book! The photos are superlative. Wonderful for both reading and cooking.

quilt art.......2000-05-11
a book with a text written by one of the most important art critics. Finally quilts seen as art pieces. An incredibly beautiful collection of amish quilts to show you the world of this religious group artistic crafts. If you look for new ideas for your quilting palette, don't miss this book.
An excellent investment for lovers of Amish quilts........1998-03-14
Amish: The Art of the Quilt by Robert Hughes chronicles the quilt collection at Esprit corporate headquarters in San Francisco. Begun haphazardly by Doug Tompkins in 1971 as a way to cover bare office walls, it has evolved into a showcase of exquisite examples of Amish artistry.
Robert Hughes writes a concise history of the Amish people and their distinctive quilts. But best of all are the 9" by 9" full-color plates of 82 representative quilts. Julie Silber, who became the collection's curator in 1983, shares her comments on each quilt, pointing out its adherence to or deviation from Amish tradition.
This book represents an excellent investment for all lovers of the vibrant colors and intricate stitching so characteristic of Amish quiltmaking.

Book Description
Her relationship with fiancé Paul Waddell in tatters, Hannah Lapp has fled her secluded Old Order Amish community in hopes of finding a new home in Ohio with her shunned aunt. Hampered by limited education and hiding her true identity, Hannah struggles to navigate the confusing world of the Englischers.
Back in Owl’s Perch, Pennsylvania, Paul is wracked with regret over his treatment of Hannah. Fearing for her safety, he tries to convince Hannah’s remaining allies–brother Luke, best friend Mary, and loyal Matthew Esh–to help search for his love. Hannah’s father, however, remains steadfastly convinced of her sinful behavior. His blindness to his family’s pain extends to her sister, Sarah, who shows signs of increasing instability.
Convinced her former life is irreparably destroyed, Hannah finds purpose and solace in life with her aunt and in a growing friendship with Englischer Martin Palmer. Will the countless opportunities in her new life persuade Hannah that her place is amongst the Englischers — or will she give in to her heart’s call to return home and face her past?

WHEN THE MORNING COMES.......2007-10-10
EXCELLENT! IT WAS HARD TO PUT THIS BOOK DOWN. I CANNOT WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT BOOK COMES OUT. IT MAKES YOU WONDER WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO HANNAH AND ALSO WHAT WILL BECOME OF SARAH. ALSO WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN HANNAH RETURNS TO OWL' PERCH.
When the Morning Comes.......2007-10-09
This is a very compelling novel regarding the values of the Amish faith and the struggle to survive in modern culture. Its storyline includes drama, humor, romance and suspense. It definitely makes you eager to read the sequel!
When the Morning Comes.......2007-10-06
This is the second book is the Cindy Woodsmall series. The books have been very good so far. I usually do not read this genre, but have found this series very good.Barb Smith
When the Morning Comes.......2007-10-05
I anxiously read When the Morning Comes after reading the first book in this series, When the Heart Cries! In When the Morning Comes I once again felt as if I was right there suffering along with Hannah Lapp while she struggled to live a life among the English after leaving her Amish heritage and Mennonite beau behind. When the Morning Comes ended in suspense, with Hannah Lapp needing to return to her Amish home and I am very impatiently looking forward to book three in this series to see if Hannah will stay with her Amish faith or if she will return to the English people that she left behind.
Great story.......2007-09-27
Cindy Woodsmall is a great author. I've read When the Heart Cries and When the Morning Comes. I hope there is a sequel to these books.

Customer Reviews:
not my favorite piece o cake.......2007-06-13
i ordered this volume because i love the others. it does have the usual superb directions, photos and diagrams. but, aside from two impressive small quilts, the patterns in this book really did not attract me, and i am returning it.
amish quilts are formal, 'serious' and still extremely traditional quilts. whimsy is definitely not an amish quilting trait. i think the patterns in this book are not only below the usual level of this team's output, but even somewhat insulting to the supposed inspiration of the amish quilts.
however, tastes differ. anything these women write will be useful and informative to nearly every quilter. but i would recommend one of their other titles to a quilter who isn't familiar with piece o cake.
Great choice to try applique.......2007-03-23
This is my first Piece O'Cake book, and I've really enjoyed it. It's also the first time I've tried applique, and the directions are easy to follow.

Book Description
The Amish women of the Pennsylvania Dutch Country have been creating exquisite quilted masterpieces since the 1800s. Amish quilts represent personal expression, craftsmanship, and frugality, and are the most desired in the world. This book is the first to take quilters inside the Amish tradition of the Circle letter. From each letter, a quilt block is created to represent a significant event in the life of the quilter; these letters and blocks are passed around a circle of 11 friends, and once 121 blocks have been created, they are joined together to create a beautiful work of art that tells the story of family and friends - a circle quilt.
With this book, quilters will step into the everyday life of the Amish community and follow the journey of 11 women who maintain their friendships while keeping a record of their lives. Quilters will enjoy the heartwarming stories while following step-by-step instructions for creating their own Amish circle quilt, as well as a baby quilt, wall hanging, table runner and appliquéd aprons and bags.
-Heartwarming stories give readers insight into the Amish community -Instructions for creating and Amish Circle Quilt as well as 8 smaller projects with a similar motif -Full-size color patterns - a great value

Customer Reviews:
Like having a private teacher........2007-08-06
The reason that most of my book reviews are 5 stars is because I usually check the book out of my library system before making a decision to purchase it; that or I've seen it in a shop and want to get a bargain on a used one. Since the morning I saw Joe Cunningham on Alex Anderson's TV quilt show, I've wished I had taped that show. He made everything look so straightforward and do-able, but I did not catch the whole show. I began looking for a how-to book on Amish quilts, even bought a few. Some of the books I looked at have limited instruction in the actual making of the quilts, or have directions for miniature ones, and some of them are just pretty pictures with the history of the Amish and their quilts. This book has excellent directions and photos for constructing the full size quilt tops from start to finish, and also includes photos and history of the Amish communities. An aspect of this book that is very important to me is that the user does not need to keep referring backward or forward to another chapter in following the steps in making the quilt top. Most quilt books have a very large general section in the front, then get to the specific construction per item, group the color photos of completed quilts in the center, and conclude with a section on tips and finishing. Those books are like reading a mystery with a dictionary in the other hand, disruptive to the flow of thought. They are probably alright for the experienced quilter, but not the beginner. Not so with this book. You get the beautiful quilt photos and the history right along with the very specific instructions for each one, then get to a short section each on how to cut templates, sew by hand or machine, and two pages on putting the quilt sandwich together. There is nothing in here that will tell you how to perfect your quilting stitch, but it will surely show you how to get to that point, and two different ways to finish the edges when the quilting is completed.
