Book Description
Can two men from different worlds cut the ties binding them to heartaches past and present, and make a life together? For Paul Gordon, the little town of Willow Bend, South Carolina is the perfect place to start over. A place where he can move on after his lover's death, alone and anonymous. Cory Saunders is just trying to survive. Between working two jobs and caring for his ailing mother, it's all he can do to keep his head above water. When Paul and Cory meet, their mutual attraction is undeniable. When the intense physical attraction starts to blossom into something deeper, neither wants to admit to what's happening. Cory doesn't have time for a relationship, and Paul isn't sure he's ready for one. But sometimes, what you thought you couldn't have turns out to be exactly what you need. Warning: this title contains explicit male/male sex and graphic language.

Willow Bend.......2007-10-11
A sexy, even pornish, story framed in a serious moribund situation. Much agony, much happiness, and mostly happiness, however.
A lovely gay romance story.......2007-09-09
I enjoyed this book very much. The characters are down to Earth and very romantic. The small town in which the story is set makes for a charming backdrop to a touching romance. The author handles the relationship between the characters very well, and touches on grief, sex, love, acceptance and struggle. I gave it four stars simply because it is a rather short novel, which I know many books from small publishing houses (like Samhain) are and the price is steep for a story under 300 pages (the publishing house sets the price, not the author.)
Good Story.......2007-08-03
It's a moving and wonderful love story that moves and inspires. The characters were well developed and the story over all had a great cast of characters. From the first few pages you get drawn into the story wanting to know more about each character. You find yourself routing for them to beat the odds and come out stronger as a couple.
Uplifting and Inspiring.......2007-07-23
I was drawn into the story from the very first page. Paul is trying to move on after losing someone he loved very much. Cory is just trying to survive and care for his dying mother. There are so many beautiful and heartbreaking moments in this book; Paul holding a photo of his lost love afraid to love again, Cory sitting next to his mother's bedside holding her hand afraid to let go. It would be so easy for a story like this to become depressing and melodramatic, but instead we are given a beautifully written, uplifting and inspiring read.
A Fairy Tale.......2007-05-10
Love at first sight is the focus of this heartwarming story. The sex scenes between the two men are amazingly descriptive.

A Roadfood™ Cookbook
For five years in a row, The Blue Willow Inn in Social Circle, Georgia, 40 minutes east of Atlanta, has been voted best small town restaurant in the South by the readers of Southern Living magazine. Billie and Louis Van Dyke say that no one is allowed to leave hungry, and certainly no one should after feasting on a variety of Southern salads, meats, vegetables, breads and desserts and, of course, sweet tea, the "Champagne of the South," and lemonade. Housed in a gloriously restored southern mansion, The Blue Willow Inn is home to Southern hospitality and charm at its best.
The Blue Willow Inn Cookbook offers delicious Southern recipes, vintage pictures from the early days of Social Circle, and fascinating anecdotes about the restaurant. It's a book that's wonderful for reading or for cooking.
The greatest restaurants in America are its wonderful independent regional restaurants. And there are no greater experts on America's regional restaurants than Michael and Jane Stern. "Coast to coast," said the New York Times, "they know where to find the freshest lobster rolls, the fluffiest pancakes, the crispiest catfish." Rutledge Hill Press is launching a new series of Roadfood™ Cookbooks, each with recipes, pictures, and the history of one of America's greatest regional restaurants.

First impression of Southern Cooking.......2007-10-01
An old roommate of mine was born in the South and she used this cookbook a lot. She made fried okra, black eyed peas and I thought both items were very successful and tasted yummy. This book was my first impression of Southern Cooking, so therefore I don't know how it compares with other southern cooking. It is all I believed it would be: lots of meat, lots of fat and lots of mayonnaise. Though I think I will avoid most of the mayo salads, I will be attempting to make some of the more traditional southern recipes at some point.
For those of us who have never tasted authentic southern food before, I think this book does a good job of presenting the basics. The other comments that this book has many "recipes every Southerner should know" makes me believe that it is a fantastic book for those of us who have no idea of what that includes.
This book is definately not for the fat concious chef and it doesn't adapt well to "low-fat" substitutions.
Great recipes for "old favorites".......2007-05-31
This is the best cookbook. My mother does not have recipes written down for potato salad or meatloaf, etc. She just adds a little of this and that. Well I needed a cookbook for these favorite southern dishes. It has become the most used cookbook in my kitchen. I love it!
A review from a True Southerner.......2006-12-20
I just received this book and am giving it to my mother-in-law as a Christmas present. After flipping through it, and reading quite a few excerpts out loud to my husband, I just wanted to give my impression of the recipes.
I was quite impressed with the 'true southern flavor' of this book. Having been raised in eastern NC, I have been eating "Southern Cuisine" all my life, and am quite frankly fed up with all the "southern" cookbooks that I see on the shelves. They all seem to put weird ingredients in the dishes just to make them photograph better, or to appeal to the mass markets. This cookbook tells it like it is -- no low-fat, vegetarian dishes. All the veggies have fat-back in them, and most have butter and cheese added. Most of the congealed salads have graced my family's table over the years.
For the reviewers that have critized this as a full-fat, Cheese-Whiz, Cream of XXX soup, cookbook -- I say yes, you are correct. But these recipes are time-tested, good, basic recipes to feed your family on.
If you are looking for good authentic Southern recipes for your table, this is a great place to start. The recipes are simple, but not boring, and the instructions are very clear.
As a side note, the stories are a great read too!
Back in grandma's kitchen.......2006-11-14
I grew up less than an hour from Social Circle. All of these recipes took me back home, back to my grandma's kitchen. I have tried several of the recipes and they tasted just like my grandma's. The history and stories included in the book made you feel like you were there. I will definitely visit The Blue Willow Inn the next time I am back in Georgia.
Too Yummy to pass up!!.......2006-01-09
My mom gave me this book for Christmas. I have tried numerous recipes. We have loved them all! I cooked for numerous family and friends during the holidays. They all raved and wanted the recipes. Some of them are so simple and they surprise you how incredibly good they are. It doesnt have to be hard.

Blue Willow Inn Bible of Southern Cooking Review.......2007-07-21
This cookbook is a wonderful example of what southern cooking is all about. It has basic recipes which are simple, traditional and flavorful. I have searched for some of these recipes for years and finally found them in this wonderful cookbook. Best cookbook I own!
"The Blue Willow Inn Bible of Southern Cooking...".......2007-01-10
This cook book was an excellent choice! It is very informative, plus offers GREAT recipes.
Not for me.......2007-01-09
I should have listened to L. Ross' Review. The subtitle should have been Bible of 1950's Southern Cooking. Recipies heavy on the use of prepared foods and packet seasonings.
The book claims to contain over 600 Essential Recipies Southerners have enjoyed for Generations. Only a few are the traditional ones my Grandmother cooked at the turn of the last century (1900). This is a book I will pass on rather than keep.
Not so traditional southern cooking.......2006-11-15
When I think of southern cooking, I think of my grandmother and our family gatherings. She would go all out. Fried eggs, grits and buscuits for breakfast. Fried chicken, rolls, beans, greens and potatoes for dinner. I loved her cooking and her she has always been the baseline I use for good southern cooking.
After reading through a few of the reviews for the Blue Willow Inn Bible of Southern Cooking, I felt comfortable with my purchase. However, the moment I cracked open the book, I felt let down. Most of the dishes include canned vegitables over fresh. Processed foods over basics. Not the way I remembered things and certainly not the way I prefer to cook today.
However, it was the biscuit recipe that drove me to return the book. The recipe uses self-rising flour over baking powder or cream of tartar. I don't know of a single southern grandmother that didn't use baking powder when I was growing up.
I realized that the book is the actual recipes for the Blue Willow Inn and that when cooking in mass quantities, they appear to take shortcuts to save time and energy. Understandable if you are cooking for dozens of families a day perhaps. But again, not the way I cook.
If you are looking for quick and easy recipes, this book is for you. But I don't think that this could be considered true southern cooking from the past.
Blue Willow Inn Bible of Southern Cooking.......2006-11-04
A great American cookbook with lots of truly southern recipes that will appeal to all Americans. I found several recipes that I had been looking for for many years and many delicious new ones. A wonderful addition to my recipe collection.

The freshness of blue and white.......2007-03-30
I bought this book because I like blue and white colour combinations. The patterns in this book are simple, and I'd recommend this book to either those who are cross-stitch beginners or those, who like me, can't get enough possible motifs to work in this colour combination.
If you are looking for more challenging cross-stitch patterns, you can adapt some of these but you may prefer to look at other books.
In the world of cross-stitch, the possibilities are endless!

good for quick work.......2003-09-03
Although this book does not offer very difficult or time consuming patterns, I have used several of them for gift items, such as table napkins, napkin rings, and bandanas for headwear and found the patterns more than satisfactory for these uses.
Better books available.......2002-02-16
Unless you want very simple beginning cross stich, you will not like this book. The designs are unrealistic and uninteresting. A good deal of the book is taken up by the history of the art form and even that is not well written. Save your money there are better books out there.
Customer Reviews:
I found my favorite book from 40 years ago!.......2007-10-09
Forty years ago, when I was 10 years old I read a book that touched my heart and I never forgot it. Well, except for one important detail, I couldn't for the life of me remember the title of that once favorite book I read. Over the years I have thought of that book and always wished I could just remember the title. Today, by accident I came across this book after all these years and it brought back so many wonderful memories of how much I loved this book. I'm buying it (of course) for my 10 year old son to read it too. Unfortunately my daughter is much older, but I think even as a older teenager she might still enjoy it. I know I plan to read it again as soon as I receive my copy.
My son is homeschooled and this book will fit perfectly with our study of CA history.
A long journey!.......2007-08-10
Blue Willow is the perfect book to jump start a young girl to read, instead of watching TV. Even though this book was written over sixty years ago. The struggles Janey had are not any different then many girl's of today. It is how she deals with these over whelming problems that will teach young girl's a valueable lesson. I have purchased a book for my eleven year old granddaughter to read.
After reading Blue Willow when I was in elementary school.I never forgot Janey , her hardship's and fell in love with Blue Willow dishes.
I hope you enjoy Blue Willow also.
Fantastic.......2007-08-10
This was a wonderful book - characters, story, moral etc. It is a book I would highly recommend to anyone, young or old. A good book to read as a bedtime story to your children or grandchildren. I wish I had read it when I was young.
Seems boring, but not.......2007-05-31
If you have seen this cover before, and thought, "Ew, what a boring book that would be, I would hate to read it," well, then you don't know what you are missing. The cover and title may be boring, but the story is NOT. A girl named Janey Larkin has to move time after time again, because her father is a cotton picker, and cotton pickers have to move alot. But, she meets a friend, a hispanic girl named Lupe. That is one goo thing about this move. But then, she hears she has to go to a camp school, which is a school were children go if their parents are cotton pickers. Because 'They don't belong' in a regular public school. But Janey likes her teacher very much, and is glad that she didn't have to go to the public school. The Blue Willow is about the blue willow plate, whick Janey's mother gave to her before she died. It is the only beautiful thing she owns, and can't hang it up until they move somewhere nice, not a shack, her mother says. Her STEP-mother.Then, her step-mother gets ill, and Janey has to cope with that. But, Janey knows it will all turn out well in the end! I totally recomend this book! Don't just judge it by the title, or the cover. You'll love this book!
Classic kids' book!.......2007-02-11
All 10-year-old Janey Larkin longs for is a real home -- which is the one thing the Larkins don't seem able to find. For as long as she can recall, her father has been a migrant worker, roaming the southern and western United States in search of temporary working, taking his wife and daughter with him. Already having natural shyness against her, Janey takes refuge in reading, rather than attempt to make friends with children she'll just have to leave in a short time.
Then the Larkins move into a shack near the Romeros, a happy family which includes Lupe, who is just Janey's age. The girls quickly become friends, and Janey is even able to attend a camp school with a wonderful teacher, making her feel things are too good to be true.
As luck would have it, that's precisely the case. Mom gets sick with pneumonia, and Dad can't work. The Larkins don't have the money to pay a doctor -- or rent -- although Mom is too weak to travel.
In desperation, Janey gives the landlord her beloved willow plate, her one luxury possession and the only thing she has to remember her birth mother by. As the family is about to leave, she decides to go say goodbye to the plate...which triggers a chain of events that changes the Larkin family's fate forever.

Satisfying Read.......2007-08-13
Blue Willow was a satisfying read. The characters and scenes are rich and the plot twists kept me engaged. In the end, I felt the story had been well told by Deborah Smith. Though the love between Artemis and Lily is nearly strangled by the tragedies that come between them, love prevailed.
Money did not insulate the Colebrooks from hardship and the MacKenzie's goodness and love did not shield them from untimely deaths. Blue Willow kept me engaged and yearning to read it greedily and quickly. While I rarely reread a book. I will read this again so that I can enjoy its richness once again. While the love scenes are erotic, they are tastefully done and the passion permeates the story line. I recommend this to anyone whose enjoyed Nora Roberts or Maeve Binchy's work.
A simply beautiful and very moving love story! Awesome!!!!!!!.......2006-06-03
This book has to be one of the best books I've ever read!!! The bond and the enduring love of the 2 main characters...their lifetime of loving each other...simply undescribable! If you have ever loved someone since childhood....and think they are lost to you....don't give up yet!!! You must read this book!!! It moved me in ways no other books have before, and I still find myself thinking about the characters all the time. A beautiful, haunting love story!
Stayed up all night to finish it.......2005-12-03
I read this book in one sitting, which would've been fine if I didn't have to sleep! I've read other books by Deborah Smith, and although I liked Blue Willow, it isn't my favorite one. (So far I like 'Stone Flower Garden' and 'When Venus Fell' the most, maybe because I read them first.) There's only one reason I didn't give Blue Willow 5 stars: it was too long for me. There were great characters with lots of depth, but towards the last few chapters I felt like it was dragging and I only stayed up late to finish it because I just wanted it to finally end! All of Smith's books I've read are wonderful romantic reads, with lots of meat to them. I enjoy her books a lot, and usually don't want them to end after I've finished, but I do have to take breaks in between because they all have a common theme: star-crossed lovers who meet as children.
Emotionally drained..A great Read Nevertheless!!.......2005-09-27
Phew! WHat a book! Sure it looks long and bland looking. But don't let that stop you. It is much more than a romance novel. It's about family, forgivness, fighting for what you believe in and also persistance. Halfway in the book , I was getting frustrated and hopeless, like the character of Lily. Lily and Artemas grew up loving each other. But litterally everything kept them apart. Everytime, they wanted to be together , someone or something drove a wedge between them. He had to choose between his family and Lily. The first time he chose his family, but the second time he was at a standstill.
All in all, the characters were well developed and believeable. The plot had many twists and turns and the family drama was aplenty. Phew, and I thought I had family problems!?!-Enjoy
Good Story, but...........2004-04-06
I like Deborah Smith as an author. She has a way of creating believable characters and stories, with plots that can alternately tug at your heart strings and make you smile. I liked Blue Willow, but I found the characters hard to believe, thereby causing the entire story to be unbelievable. I know, it's fiction and I should probably lighten up, but the reality of a character is what often drives a novel. It seemed incredibly far-fetched that Artemus Colebrook could have such a powerful drive to overcome his parent's shadow, be the strong leader of his siblings, and turn around a failing business into an international powerhouse. Not that that kind of strength and integrity isn't possible, but all before he turned twentyfive! I also found it unreal for such a handsome, rich, powerful man to harbor feelings for a child he'd seen, what, two or three times? A young girl he faithfully corresponded through the mail for several years? Come on.
I also found the Stepford-like loyalty of the Colebrook clan to be unreal as well as a little scary. Six brothers and sisters who can't see further than the bounds of their family is more than a little bizarre.
And for Lily to simply stand by and say nothing when evidence came to hand that aleviated the blame the Colebrooks placed on her deceased spouse? Give me a break! If I were Lily, I would want the world to know the blame for the tragedy the story is centered around was shared with the Colebrook sibling running the project. Especially after Colebrook International sued her dead husband's firm, causing her to lose her home and all of her worldly belongings. Heck, I'd call a press conference. If Artemas had to do what he had to do, so should have Lily. Better yet, Artemus should have done the honorable thing and informed the public of his sister's involvement.
Oh well. That's just me.
This is a good read for the most part, if you can past the inane behavior of many of the characters.

Blue Willow: Identification & Value Guide.......2007-06-03
Very pleased with the condition the book we ordered came in and the delivery was very quick. Thanks and would buy from you again.
Light on Guidance.......2007-03-30
This book contains interesting information about the origin of this design style but little detail about any of the many varieties that were/are being made. It is about 2/3 taken up with photographs of various styles but with only one or two pieces of any given style and no details about each or any idea of what the variety of other pieces within each style look like, so it is nearly impossible to truly identify the style you have or want. I was interested in the information, but found little guidance in my quest to discover more about the pieces that I own. Even the prices given are merely a recount of the price paid for each piece; but not when the purhcase was made or under what conditions or whether this is a reflection of the relative "value" of a given style of the blue willow design.
An excellent reference book!.......2007-01-11
The book "Blue Willow: Identification & Value Guide" is an excellent reference book. Not only does it give a better understanding of all the different Willow patterns out there, it also contains beautiful, very clear illustrations. The quality of the paperback edition is excellent, using glossy, very good quality paper that enhances the photographs. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Blue Willow dinnerware. I bought the book for my husband who knew nothing about Blue Willow before this purchase. He is now much more knowledgeable on the subject and is confident in his purchasing. As a novice, it has helped my husband greatly.
This book gives excellent value for money........2004-07-30
I bought this out of curiousity brought on by the possession of two subtley disparate pieces of Blue Willow ware about which I was curious as I was under the impression that the patterns were all the same. This book immediately disabused me of this notion which is, in big part, why this is such a great reference: Because it shows and describes a myriad of different vessels, wares, designs, and manutacturers in FULL COLOR with information that is relevant and helpful to both the novice and the professional.
If you thought you knew quite a bit about the Blue Willow pattern, I guarantee that this book will humble you because the author presents such a broad range of items (with a present day price range) from USA, China, the UK and Japan, ranging from plates and saucers to cups and pots to spoons and utensils to platters and chargers to egg stands and vases that only the most serious collector can hope to have seen as much different material as found here. There is also a helpful section on, believe it or not, reproductions. I think that you will be quite happy with this book even if, like me, you do not collect the stuff.

The Blue Willow.......2000-05-24
This is a book that has been in my mind since the first time I read it over 30 years ago. I have been trying to find a copy of for my own. I read it for the first time in grammer school. I have always felt sorry for the little girl in it. It always made me feel bad that all she felt she had in the world of any value was that plate. And I loved how proud she was of it.
A Must Have For Blue Willow Collectors.......2000-04-03
This is a wonderful book for the casual and serious collector of Blue Willow. The graphics are clear and the number of manufacturer marks listed makes for easy referencing.

Fun for the Unindoctrinated.......2003-05-26
Coming from a half-Chinese family, I can pretty qualifiedly say that this is a fun book. I am not "into the culture thing," so I am unlikely to just like the book because it has a Chinese/Euro story history.
I simply enjoyed the artwork, quite frankly. I want to see more of this illustrator, who has been seen in Atlantic Monthly also, I believe.
Judge this book by it's cover!.......2003-01-26
I've been a collector of children's books for about 35 years, and can safely say, I've found a crown jewel. Sadly, Pam Conrad is no longer with us, but her words will live on forever. This is a beautiful story, told in exquisite detail, capturing the romance and serenity of the setting perfectly. Ms. Gallagher's illustrations were what drew me to the book in the first place, and I now have a complete set of all of the books she's illustrated to date. She is unsurpassed in her talent, and ability to create gentle images that will linger in your mind like so many fine memories of childhood. A beautiful experience!

i first saw this book a few months ago, and wasn't able to find it again, till yesterday. it is a beautiful story - although not a true asian fairy tale, it has all the elements. The artwork is what first drew me in - the girl on the cover is so adorable. Definitely a must for anyone's book collection - especially if you have a love of fairy tales, children's books or art books.
