Book Description

Even as a kid, Alicia knew music was in her heart. Fortunately, she grew up in New York City, a place offering everything from free concerts in Central Park to the background music of street and subway performers. She had the chance to take advantage of the culture the city provided as well as its quality education. At 12 years old, she auditioned and was accepted to the Professional Performing Arts School. For Alicia, the school was an artistic playground. Soon, she was on her way to her first recording contract.

After disagreements with Columbia Records, Alicia was able to record her music, her own way, for Clive Davis and his newly formed J Records. Her debut album, Songs in A Minor, along with her hit single, Fallin', have put Alicia in the winner's circle with 5 Grammy Awards. Her second album, The Diary of Alicia Keys, became a triple platinum album.

Great book. My 2nd grade daughter used it for her book report and loved it. Great information. An easy read.

5 out of 5 stars A rare biography of the child actress geared to grades 3-4.......2005-01-03

John Bankston's Shirley Temple appeared some time ago but deserves ongoing mention as a rare biography of the child actress geared to grades 3-4. Plenty of books on Shirley reach adult audiences: this 32-page title is a delight for kids who want to read about a notable successful child star. There could be more illustrations, but the value here is the information which is suitable for a report.

1 out of 5 stars Garbage.......2007-03-06

Even if I had not seen this book for myself, just peeking at the inside page offered by amazon, you can clearly see there's a major problem. Everyone in the whole US knows that Ruben's last name is not Stoddard. How could we expect a factual, enlightening biography of Clay if the guy butchers something as basic as that? What moron published this garbage? Don't waste your money!

1 out of 5 stars Surprised this book was published .......2004-11-24

I am very disappointed in this book. There are many non-factual items and grammatical errors. If this book is meant for children, statements made about his biological father and his and his mother's "escape" really should've been left out.

1 out of 5 stars What a disappointment!.......2004-11-24

Like many Clay fans, I want all I can get my hands on that bears his name. This is the reason I bought this terrible book. Save your money--it's inaccurate, small and pointless! It's not even good for children.

1 out of 5 stars Is there a listing less than 1 star?.......2004-11-09

Cuz this book deserves it. It is not worthy of picking up Raleigh poo. Don't buy it. The author should be ashamed of himself for making money on a book that has so many factual errors than any moron who can operate a PC and check fansites can find something on nearly every page that's incorrect.

1 out of 5 stars Clay makes me Ga Ga, but this book is Cahh Cahh.......2004-10-15

I don't get it!!!! Seventeen bucks ($17) bucks for a book that is only 32 pages long? In reality it is probally 16 pages worth of reading material but the print is large. Let the one star rating be for the EASY ON-THE-EYES print. I feel totally dooped. It's bad enough when music labels want to pass off a cd single full of radio edits of the dance remixes for the full price of a cd-maxi single. Now I got publishers gouging me for $17 bucks for what should be $3.99!
As for content, I think Rolling Stone did Aiken more justice then this. At least they can SPELL! (Did I endure 12 years of educational torture so I can be insulted by a book full of missplled words? Did this author go to school?) Gee wiz. Furthermore, I have learned about Clay mainly from fans websites and teenage-oriented magazines but I thought this would
be "official". It was mostly a rehash of material I already gleaned from above mentioned resourses. I cannot believe the price for this and if I were Clay, I would not want it to be released because it would be a travesty and a rip-off for my fans (IF I WERE CLAY, THAT IS!!!) who deserve more.
Perhaps this would make a kids book but I would not want to give a kid - who is being tought the RIGHT way to spell - a book so loaded with spelling errors that he/she would wonder what the point of school was.

DISAPPOINTED.

For the one who did not find this review helpful. Let me recommend Clay's book "Learning To Sing".

I must first acknowledge that the book is worthy of reading. Secondly, good4nene "vernisa" needs to proofread before posting comments. His/her posting of "I thought the book was rather boring.i was so dissapointed with what i read.however i think her real biography should be done alot later on in her career.it was just to soon." As a teacher, I would have written "I thought the book was rather boring. I was so disappointed with what I read. However, I think her real biography should be written later in her career. It was just too soon." Regardless of the quality of Vernisa's writing, Carrie has demonstrated her many talents.

If ever a book on cyberculture wore a fedora and trench coat and leaned against a lamppost on a foggy street, this is the one. It is an unabashed look at the dark side of the Net--the stuff many other books gloss over. It's hard-edged, wisecracking, and often quite cynical as it pours over the reality of online scams, illegal activities, and simple annoyances.

Wang's stated goal is to open the reader's eyes about what's really there. He shows what's being done, how it's being done, and how to avoid problems or even strike back. He begins with a chapter about the news media, and his message is that no source is to be trusted completely. He examines issues important to Internet users: the cost of getting computerized (with tips on how to find the real bargains), who is using the Internet as a source of hate information, and how your privacy can be invaded and protected.

He shows you the secrets of malicious hackers and others and how some of them attack computer systems without the ethical mindset typical of the original, idealistic hackers. Wang shows you how you can set up your defenses against such an onslaught, discussing how to protect yourself and your kids from online stalkers and how online con games work.

Wang never claims that the Internet is the electronic den of darkness that the pop media make it out to be. But he makes it clear that something this big has its lowlights--it's own "net noir." His messages are "know your enemy" and "be careful who you trust," an ideology verified by the examples he provides. --Elizabeth Lewis

    Book Description

National bestseller with over 175,000 copies sold!

If you thought hacking was just about mischief-makers hunched over computers in the basement, think again. As seasoned author Wallace Wang explains, hacking can also mean questioning the status quo, looking for your own truths, and never accepting at face value anything authorities say or do.

The completely revised fourth edition of this offbeat, non-technical book examines what hackers do, how they do it, and how you can protect yourself. Written in the same informative, irreverent, and entertaining style that made the first three editions hugely successful, Steal This Computer Book 4.0 will expand your mind and raise your eyebrows. New chapters discuss the hacker mentality, social engineering and lock picking, exploiting P2P file-sharing networks, and how people manipulate search engines and pop-up ads to obtain and use personal information. Wang also takes issue with the media for "hacking" the news and presenting the public with self-serving stories of questionable accuracy. Inside, you'll discover:

  • How to manage and fight spam and spyware
  • How Trojan horse programs and rootkits work, and how to defend against them
  • How hackers steal software and defeat copy-protection mechanisms
  • How to tell if your machine is being attacked and what you can do to protect it
  • Where the hackers are, how they probe a target and sneak into a computer, and what they do once they get inside
  • How corporations use hacker techniques to infect your computer and invade your privacy
  • How you can lock down your computer to protect your data and your personal information using free programs included on the book's CD If you ve ever logged onto a website, conducted an online transaction, sent or received email, used a networked computer, or even watched the evening news, you may have already been tricked, tracked, hacked, and manipulated. As the saying goes, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't after you. And, as Wallace Wang reveals, they probably are. The companion CD contains hundreds of megabytes of 100% FREE hacking and security-related programs, like keyloggers, spyware stoppers, port blockers, IP scanners, Trojan horse detectors, and much, much more. CD compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars This Book Is Basic. But very informative........2007-08-26

If you are looking to hack this book is for you. I found that visual basic is a good programming language. C++,Python,Java, and many more langs will have hacks. Its up to you to learn how to write them. You must learn the programming language before you start looking at hacking, because other wise you are wasting your time. Many hackers are self driven and want to create programs and discover flaws in programs. It is my personal experience that you will not find every thing you want to know from one book. If you are seriously into Networking and Security i sugeset learning from some one who will teach you and offers classes on it (this would be hands on learning) EcCouncil is a great reference and will teach you a lot.

    3 out of 5 stars Basic information.......2007-01-04

It's not bad, it just too basic. For some reason I had the expectation that it would be a more deep book about hacking.

    3 out of 5 stars Good overview.......2006-12-13

Good overview of network security from a very social perspective. If you are looking for tools based methodology this book misses the mark.

If you are interested in social engineering and social trends of hacking, this is right on.

I felt the book started off fairly strong but started to decline as the focus went more and more into social impacts of hacktivism.

5 out of 5 stars Provides Concise Details.......2006-09-22

This book provides some pretty concise details for 370 pages. It's very pratical and entertaining to read. The writing style gives you a feeling of mysteriousness. However, the writer's insights are disputable; you may not agree with all of the comments he has on things. Of course that doesn't change the fact this book provides a lot of details on several internet topics one little book.

    2 out of 5 stars Am I Missing Something?.......2006-08-28

I don't understand the appeal of this book.

I've been around the internet phenomenon in one form or another for almost 20 years. I'm conversant with the history of many technical and cultural happenings on it. As a result, I'm probably not the best reader for an 'shocking truths' book because none of it is going to shock me.

I read this book thinking I might come across a few clever tactics I'd not heard of, and because it has been marketed as cynical and funny writing. We had a copy of Rube Goldberg's Steal This Book in the house when I was young, so I was hoping for something in that vein too.

Honestly, I struck out on all three. There wasn't anything new for me, which was fine. I didn't find the humor lame or bad. As a matter of fact, I simply didn't find it. Am I not reading it right? And finally, the irreverent I was looking forward to...well, I'm not entirely sure it's possible in this context. The book didn't deliver that premise for me, but I'm not sure it can really be done anymore. That time and those circumstances in our culture are different from this time and these circumstances.

Someone who is idly curious about how the internet "really works," likes a long read, and can get into being entertained on the topic might enjoy this book. For me however it was flatly informative, sometimes a little forced, and simply not a funny piece of writing.

This book is great for young minds learning about the great history of America. It reminded my son and I of the opportunities we have here because of the freedom we enjoy and that is due to the many brave soldiers who have fought over the years for that very purpose. Also, wonderful illustrations!!!

5 out of 5 stars Nicely detailed illustrations introduce our National Anthem.......2001-06-13

Peter Spier is one of my favorite illustrators of children's books. Here, his illustrations for three verses of Francis Scott Key's poem and song, "The Star-Spangled Banner," provide an excellent introduction for children to the meaning behind his famous lyrics.

I usually read this aloud to primary classes around a patriotic holidays. This year, because of our late school year, I read it for Flag Day. Since the words and historical setting are unfamiliar to most younger students, I have begun introducing this book with "The Story of 'The Star Spangled Banner,'" which can be found in "The Children's Book of America," edited by William J. Bennett. These two volumes make fine companions.

Even with this introduction, Key's text needs explaining, however with Spier's finely detailed illustrations, this task is much easier. Children love to examine the intricacies and they usually come up with some excellent comments and questions. On the page featuring Arlington National Cemetery, they ask about who died in battle, why some of the grave markers are stars instead of crosses, and why the flag is flying at half-mast.

Our copy of "The Star-Spangled Banner" is nearly worn out from heavy use. That should say something about the popularity of this excellent patriotic book.

5 out of 5 stars A book to inspire young patriots,.......1999-02-07

our four-year-old claims this is his FAVORITE book. Perhaps it is because his mother chokes up and tears drop to her cheeks as she reads this book. We have found that this is an excellent read-aloud and has stretched our four-year-old's language skills in many ways. As if The Star Spangled Banner weren't moving enough, the arrangement of pictures flows along with the words of the song to create an image of heroics and bravery. In addition, little incidentals like soldiers feeding their horses and wet clothes hanging to dry aboard ship cause us to remember that these were real people fighting. Peter Spier mixes history with the present as he causes us to remember what these men were fighting for. We see schools and businesses, Arlington Cemetery and the Statue of Liberty, cities and rural farms, synagogues and churches, Amish buggies and a Friends Meeting House all as evidence of our cultural diversity. We also see that the fight continues as we witness a renovation project and scientists working in a lab. The first, second and fourth verses are illustrated. The pictures help the capable parent define words such as "conceals" and "discloses." In addition, the artwork contains so much information and story that conversation just develops as the book is read. There is an oustanding collection of Flags of America and a thorough history of the War of 1812. The words to all four verses of the Star Spangled Banner and the music by J Stafford Smith follow. Peter Spier is becoming our hero as the author of our favorite children's books.
