1 out of 5 stars The Only LH Book I've Ever Hated.......2007-07-27

STAY AWAY FROM THIS BOOK. I would give it 0 stars if I could.

There are already many overwhelming negative reviews but I have to add another one just so you know HOW BAD IT IS. Jessica is lovely but damaged and Nikolas is a narcissistic and crass bully. You would think in normal Linda Howard fashion they would grow for the better and learn to love, but Nickolas is horrendous and domineering--he all but forces Jessica to sleep with him at one point. He's not just unlikable, he's actually a bad person and her acceptance of a clearly abusive relationship is disgusting. I like the hero/heroine interaction in EVERY other Howard book but this one leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

***DO NOT JUDGE HER BY THIS BOOK. If this is the only one you've ever read, GO READ ANYTHING ELSE BY HER and you will love it!***

Sorry Linda, but 1 stinker out of 300 isn't so bad...

1 out of 5 stars Abuse that glitters?.......2006-12-24

The "hero" is abusive - there's just no getting around it. Even in the 1980's I don't think this type of behavior would be accepted. I also found it highly unbelievable that the heroine would continue seeing the hero after their first "date". That said, Linda Howard is a talented author and most of her work is truly worth reading. I am particularly fond of "To Die For" and highly recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars Unless you are a die hard Howard fan, do not, and I repeat, do not read this book!.......2006-07-07

I adore Linda Howard and have only stumbled over two of her books. This one and her next novel 'An indepent wife.'Call it premonition but from the first sentence I had a deep feeling that it was going to be like 'An independent wife.' I wonder did/do women really enjoy misogynist, whiny, degrading written word?
Jessica Stanton, a financially independet widower, is the only woman to oppose Nikolas Constantinos, Greek billionare. Because of his uncontrolled response to her and her defiance, Niko belives it is fine to treat Jessica like a disobidient dog. The only repulsive thing he did not do to this character is physically beat her, and truthfully I don't think that would have shocked me as some of the things he did throughout the book.
This book, although it is appalling, demonstrates how much Howard has drawned and pushed her female characters into confident roles in her recent works. Thank you, Linda Howard, for that redemption. Unless you are a die hard Howard fan, do not, and I repeat, do not read this book!
I recommend "Open Season", "Dream Man", and "Mr. Perfect". Those are, in my own personal opinion, her best works.

1 out of 5 stars Proof that even Linda Howard can produce a dud.......2006-03-21

Greek tycoon Nik Constantinos summons virginal widow Jessica Stanton to his office to find out why she continues to vote against his mergers. He offers to buy her stock and decides he must possess her. She holds out on him like any good virgin would, and he reluctantly agrees to marry her so he can sleep with her, and whisks her away to his Mediterranean island to meet the family and conduct the nuptials. Won't he be surprised on his wedding night to find that the woman he could swear is a tramp is really a virgin.

Only in the 80's could crud like this be published... It was hard to finish this one without laughing my butt off. Thank goodness Linda Howard's writing improved.

1 out of 5 stars WOW! What a Stinker!.......2005-04-05

I wish I could give this no stars. I have read most all of Linda Howard's other books and liked most all of them very much. This, however, is the worst book I have ever read, written by anyone! I can't even finish it, because it just doesn't get any better. The heroine is spineless, lacking all self-respect, and unlikable. THe hero is hateful, ego-maniacal, cruel, and like the another reviewer said, would make a good villain. I kept reading until Jessica left Nikolas after he insulted her, verbally abused her really, told her she wasn't good enough to marry him! Then she went back to him and I couldn't stomache any more. This is not a romance. Actually, I wondered if some chauvenistic male wrote it and Linda Howard just put her name on it. Don't read this, any other Linda Howard book will be worth your time.

3 out of 5 stars Average manual........2004-07-11

Another average pet manual released on the market. The only guide released should have been Nona Kilgore Baur's thick manual on this particular Retriever. This delicacy breed has manuals written about it that required so little time by a less insightful company over the years. Cairns did not need to bother writing this material, as it has been duplicated already in superior guides. Our household contains two juvenile Golden Retrievers in the process of house and outdoor training. This guide did not prove to be any help since we had already purchased Baur's guide. The reason so many books have been written over the years was to trivalize the popularity of variable books on this very special pet. Do not buy this if you already own "Golden Retrievers for Dummies" by Nona K. Baur.

4 out of 5 stars Grrrreat Book.......2002-01-07

My husband and I both found this book to be a good book on Golden Retrievers. No matter if you are an amateur or professional, you will find this book enjoyable

5 out of 5 stars Something For Everyone Who Loves Goldens.......2000-02-28

If you love Goldens, this is the book for you. Ms. Cairns covers the spectrum from family pets to hunting and field dogs to outstanding show dogs. The book is filled with lovely pictures and wonderful thoughts on puppies, active adults and an especially nice section on the joys of the older dog. The book is a visual treat and something you will be proud to add to your library.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting, complete, with beautiful photography.......1999-10-05

"The Golden Retriever: All that Glitters" is a beautiful, informative book that's large enough to cover many topics thoroughly. It is written in a clear, enjoyable manner, with terrific (if not very large) photographs.

Jamie Cairns truly knows, loves, and understands Goldens, and it shows in her comprehensive and occasionally humorous coverage of "Living with a Golden Retriever". She provides good information on health and maintenance issues, and more time than usual discussing field, obedience, agility, and other topics. The section on "Caring for the Older Golden Retriever" is both interesting and uncommon. The author leans toward field-bred Goldens rather than conformational, and this is reflected both in the text and especially the photography. It's not typical, and I loved it.

All-in-all, a beautiful and well-done book that would be a great addition to every Golden-lover's bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars A golden book on Golden Retrievers........1999-08-24

If an owner of a new Golden Retriever can buy just one book, make it this one! The Golden Retriever: All That Glitters covers every aspect of owning a Golden in an understandable and practical way. A great reference to be used again and again! Cairns manages to cover everything from the first fun of owning a pup to the serious concerns of caring for an aging Golden with a professional style and attitude that everyone from the newest novice through the seasoned veteran to the breed will appreciate. Her concise style has produced a book crammed with valuable information on the endless possibilities of enjoying life with a Golden!

5 out of 5 stars From a long time fan.......2007-03-07

Alright, I'll give this book a bit more credit than most. I agree with alot of people saying karak, the protagonist for this book, is a bit too much like a queen. But then again we have to remember where shew comes from. Kara is the Mayor's daughter and always got what she wanted until she met people who opposed her, aka Adriane and Emily. In this book Kara starts off seeking power to spite the other two, but as the book moves along you can tell some chaaracter development, which was really needed in this series for her.
This book wasn't my favorite out of the series, but it made way for an even better story and more rounded characters. In book 3, cry of the wold, kara is evedentily more mature due to what had happened in the last book.
For me, this book was a bit boring because there was no really big magical catastrophe, or at least it didn't seem like it while reading, but it did allow for some major characterization which, in the end, turnedout to be better.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad...........2006-05-10

Well it was ok but... well Kara sorta acts all the Queen of the world and stuff which I think is a little ennoying but it was still an excellent book to read and caught my attention. Kara meeets with a felione cat Lyra, gets a jewel.. not reallly but later on in the series, and the mages finally see the Dark Sorceress. Ohh ya I tried to go on Avlonclubhouse but what do you know it didn't work which bis really odd. Instead it showed this Go Daddy thing! Figures anyways buy this book people that depends if you like Kara but if you don't then you may not.

3 out of 5 stars Not the greatest book in the series.......2005-11-12

Ok. I don't mean to be rude but this book really was not good. I mean the book was good is just I don't like Kara and I find she is way, way, way to jealous of her friends and selfish not to mention spoiled. Kara wishes she can have a jewel and later she finds one but there are these weird creatures who stalks her. At the end it's good but Kara can act such a queen.

4 out of 5 stars Okay.......2005-08-04

I was going to give this book three stars, but then I rethought it. This book wasn't all that bad. This book was kind of a let down after the first Avalon book, but still not the worst in the series. This time, the story is focused mainly on Kara. In the first book, the story was focused mainly on Emily. Kara must find out who she is and what her magic means. Kara finds a jewel and must decide whether or not to use it. Sounds pretty good, right? Well, in the beginning, Kara showed some pretty poor personality traits and from the beginning, I thought it was going to be a failure in the Avalon series. I was wrong, but I wasn't entirely. At the end of this book, Kara is still a bit of a snob and we really don't find out what a Blazing Star is. Myself, being a fan of Emily, cannot really relate to the "injustices" that Emily and Adriane put upon her. Still, if you liked the first book, read this one, and be sure to read Book Three. It's a major inprovement.

5 out of 5 stars Good, good...not the best in the series, but good........2005-01-15

Avalon is my favorite series, but this book is definately not the best. Still, it deserves five stars--being funny, intriguing, and just plain magical. This novel stars Kara, and we go deeper into what her magic is like (still not a question that's answered completely, but still...) and the history of the mysterious cat introduced in book 1, who's name turns out to be Lyra. We uncover a heck of a lot more of the mystery of magic, along with the powers of our three girls. Emily can definately heal, and Ozzie the elf-turned-ferret seems kind of close to her. Adriane can work nature but can also fight with her magic. Stormbringer the mistwolf is tightly bonded to her. And, last but not least, Kara. We still don't know her true power yet, but one thing's clear--her magic is wild, strong, and needs taming. Will Kara be able to keep that new unicorn horn-like jewel Lyra helped her find? Even if she doesn't, it's aparent that she and that winged cat have a big future together.

This book is not my favorite in the series, but it's still excellent--and essential.

5 out of 5 stars Different subject, but still stunningly captivating!.......2002-08-03

Though the subject material for this book is quite different from Morris' usual choice, it is nonetheless a well written and enticing story. If you prefer Morris' civil war books, this one may seem unappealing at first. As you read though, the story truly captures you. I found that simply the movie that the characters were producing had an excellent storyline, not to mention the true plot itself. Gilbert Morris certainly did well when he wrote "All that Glitters".

      4 out of 5 stars Surprised!.......2000-07-25

I was surfing along trying to find more currect fiction by Gilbert Morris, when I happened on to this page. Even though it may not be in my top 100, I certainly found "All that Glitters" to be a quiet enjoyable read. It's nice to have a feel good book ever so often. Like I said, I was looking for more!

      3 out of 5 stars Something different.......2000-04-05

I have read nearly all of Gilbert Morris' books. I enjoy his writing, and this book is no different. The subject matter is different than many of his previous books, as it is set in modern times and involves the secular film industry. After a slow start, the book develops nicely. Several of the characters, particularly Mr. and Mrs. Frame, are quite enjoyable. While, not Gilbert Morris' best piece of work, on the whole it was an enjoyable evening's read for me. Probably not worth purchasing, but definitely worth a check-out from the local library.

1 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointing juvenile story-line;poorly developed.......1999-10-12

Having just completed Morris's Liberty Bell Series which was fabulous in every way, I expected this single novel to be as good in content and execution only to be sorely disappointed in both. Certainly not up to Morris's standards. The subject matter, a movie set in the heartland, far from L.A., was weak and not in the least bit entertaining.

My friend has been in MLM for 20 years and still is as poor as he's ever been. He's traveling every week to show "the business" to someone, trying to get them to sign up so they will be as poor as he is. If you want to know what drives such insanity, read "All That Glitters is Not God."

I was disappointed with this book simply because it lacked specifics. It was written in a vague sense of the MLM industry that could be applied to nearly any profession where money is a lure. Rather than being a balanced review of an industry, it smacks of one's bitter experience with a specific company. My challenge to the author is to write a guide book on MLM's based on biblical principles that shows the pros, cons and how to avoid the pitfalls of the industry.

Very well written book on how the MLM business sucks us into a wearisome pursuit of wealth by showing us how we are "discontent" with our current situation and alluring us into wanting more and more--and sometimes at the expense of those we love. I've been involved with an MLM for seven years and for the last three have basically just purchased products, but have been wondering if I "missed the boat" somehow by not pursuing MLM vigilantly to obtain my "financial freedom". What I've discovered over the last three years is PEACE from all the running here and there and my ministry to others has increased tremendously since I'm not so consumed with my own "success". This book confirmed to me that I've made the right decision to cease MLM activities and is an excellent guide for anyone caught in the MLM web of deceit.

5 out of 5 stars Gives spiritual help in getting out multilevel marketing.......1999-06-25

This book exposes the "sweet deceit" associated with multilevel marketing (MLM). It describes what happens in MLMs and it offers the reader spiritual guidance and assistance to break out of MLM.

          Book Description

Luminous golden and sparkling black pottery fashioned from mica-rich clays is the subject of this first comprehensive study of micaceous pottery in New Mexico. With over 60 color photographs, All That Glitters explores an exciting comtemporary art form as it evolved from the traditional culinary ware made by Pueblo and Jicarilla Apache Indians of the Northern Rio Grande region for at least 500 years.
