Definitely not for begginers.......2007-10-02
I never got around to finishing this book because halfway through it I noticed I had not even written a single line of code. The author does not propose any excercises for you to try out what your learned through the book. All he does is list all the functions available in PHP but no examples on how to use them.
I can see this book being useful as a reference after you have programmed PHP for a while, but for beginners that want to get started in PHP for the very firt time I would not recommend it.
Far too many typos, syntax errors, and gaps in explinations.......2007-09-15
I bought this book on recommendation. I have a background in programming, and I just needed a book to cement together all the concepts I had picked up in developing PHP apps. Less then 2 chapters in the errors became so frequent in the code that the author no longer holds my confidence. Its hard to be confident of his explanation if it lacks the care to make sure its correct.
The writing and explanations, though following a clear format, are at times wildly inconstant in explaining the parts of various functions. Do not recommend.
Full of value.......2007-08-07
I haven't programmed in almost 10 years, but wanted to jump into PHP and MySQL generated web content. I was able to pick and chose throughout this book to bring myself up to speed and have a functional website in a matter of 2 weeks. I was easily able to adapt examples in the book to fit my needs.
This book was really worth the money. I will be referencing to it for a long time to come.
Great reference for all.......2007-07-06
I am a semi-experienced programmer, majoring in CS and currently in my third year. I needed to buy a book to learn PHP for a job and originally went for O'Reilley's _Learning PHP and MySQL_. I quickly realized that was a bad choice, however, because it was way too simple and short and didn't really cover SQL at all. Even as a reference book it just did not suffice compared to Gilmore's _PHP5 and MySQL_ which I borrowed from a friend. PHP and MySQL is covered in great depth, and a thorough index makes this nearly-exhaustive text a great reference book.
**This is likely not a book for someone who has never programmed before** as it uses typical programming language terminology without previous definition. Still, abundant examples and side notes allows anyone with reasonable programming experience to breeze through the book. Reading this cover-to-cover would definitely not be the correct approach, but skimming over the chapters and getting acquainted with the PHP language is something this book makes easy to do when you can simply slow down and go over the examples when you feel you need to, or quickly reach the next section thanks to good organization and text formatting.
If you are looking for a reference book for PHP and MySQL just short of a bible, this is definitely for you. But if you are a complete novice to programming, you would probably be better off coming back to this later or buying it on the side for once you have more experience.
Great starter guide.......2007-06-22
this guide speaks in laymens terms and teached using simple examples. I would recomend this book for grandmothers and professional web admins collections

Tremendous score.......2007-09-06
This is GREAT! So happy this was finally released. My husband and I are both musicians. Can't tell you how marvelous it is to watch this score while listening to the Beatles' performances.
Complete Beatles Song Library.......2007-09-01
If you love the Beatles and love music - this is a must have. It is beautiful looking in hard cover and slides into a nice protective sleeve. The print is small and so tough to read. A way around this would be to provide a CD or download capabiltiy with a password so a purchaser could print out a particular song. I would have rated this a 5 with this included. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to own this -- plus I think its a pretty good value, but I would pay $10 more to be able to download the music or have a companion CD/DVD.
Amazing. Binding easy to fix........2007-08-23
As previous reviewers have said, the transcriptions aren't perfect, but the errors are minor enough that anyone with enough of an ear to notice them can fix them. For the amount that this collection is an absolutely awe-inspiring piece of work, I don't think that a few minor errors should count against it.
Many reviewers have had issues with the binding being too thick and the book too big and cumbersome to balance on a music stand. I fixed this problem by simply taking the book to a copy shop and having them rebind it for me into three volumes. It only cost me ten dollars and it has made my life infinitely easier.
Small type no problem.......2007-07-30
An excellent resource for musicians. The small type mentioned in numerous reviews is not that small and anyone with access to a copier can enlarge the image of any song you happen to be working on. I was impressed that even "Revolution #9" was scored. A very good companion volume to "The Compleat Beatles" that I purchased back in 1982.
Beginners to Cover Bands.......2007-07-18
I've been trying to teach myself guitar for over two years now. Being in my forties, I don't have the time (or talent)to sit with a CD/MP3 player and try to figure a song out. I've purchased other song books, chordbooks, easy play books, etc... Each one falls short in providing not only accurate information, but enough information for a relative beginner to play. This book provides, in my opinion, all the necessary information for a beginner, expert, or cover band to play. Notation, tab, chords, chord fingering and strumming patterns. To date, this is the only book I would recommend.
Book Description
In this compulsively readable, fascinating, and provocative guide to classical music, Norman Lebrecht, one of the world’s most widely read cultural commentators tells the story of the rise of the classical recording industry from Caruso’s first notes to the heyday of Bernstein, Glenn Gould, Callas, and von Karajan.
Lebrecht compellingly demonstrates that classical recording has reached its end point–but this is not simply an expos? of decline and fall. It is, for the first time, the full story of a minor art form, analyzing the cultural revolution wrought by Schnabel, Toscanini, Callas, Rattle, the Three Tenors, and Charlotte Church
. It is the story of how stars were made and broken by the record business; how a war criminal conspired with
a concentration-camp victim to create a record empire; and how advancing technology, boardroom wars, public credulity and unscrupulous exploitation shaped the musical backdrop to our modern lives. The book ends with a suitable shrine to classical recording: the author’s critical selection of the 100 most important recordings–and the 20 most appalling.
Filled with memorable incidents and unforgettable personalities–from Goddard Lieberson, legendary head of CBS Masterworks who signed his letters as God; to Georg Solti, who turned the Chicago Symphony into “ the loudest symphony on earth”–this is at once the captivating story of the life and death of classical recording and an opinioned, insider’s guide to appreciating the genre, now and for years to come.

The crisis of classical music?.......2007-08-17
In the last times several books and articles have cast doubts about the future of classical music. Evidences like the ageing of audiences attending concerts or the lack of renewal of repertoires support that thesis. In this context, the writer and critic Norman Lebrecht has published a new book on the subject. To support his thesis, the first part of the book is devoted to the history of the record industry, its rise and its fall, how were founded the companies that lead the sector for half a century; the impact of new technologies (stereophonic sound, digital recording) and formats (LP, CD) in its evolution; and, finally, the present situation where big companies face a shrinking production and a fierce competition from small independent publishers besides the internet and downloads.
Any selection is obviously subjective and the criteria applied can be questioned. Nevertheless it is worth to know the circumstances and fact that were around the making of these records, some of them unanimously considered as absolute references.
What is left after reading the book is a certain air of pessimism. However its reading is worthwhile as it offers a vivid description of the recording industry, well documented with bibliographic references, and what is more important, with the author's personal experiences.
Always entertaining and informative.......2007-07-04
Lebrecht has been placing lilies on the grave of classical music for some time now. A more accurate title would be "The Life and Death of Classical Recording," as classical music itself is alive and well. It is an observable fact that the traditional CD is probably on its way out as a "pop" music vehicle; it would be unrealistic to expect classical recording to be unaffected by the ongoing shift to MP3 and other computer formats. Like the "Death" card of the Tarot deck, signifying not death so much as change, the industry is not dying but evolving in unexpected directions. What must be upsetting for those involved is the unpredictability of change - who, in 1975, would have predicted the prevalence of hip-hop today? The same forces are reflected in classical music, on a smaller scale.
The relative popularity of classical music in the 20th century's midpoint was an anomaly. Through the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras, composers were dependent on patronage (Schubert may have been the first serious composer to support himself, primarily through the popularity of his songs for the Biedermeier set, rather than his "serious" music). The typical 19th century European peasant, like his modern American counterpart, may have gone his entire life without hearing a Beethoven piano sonata. The majority, then as now, had their "popular" music.
Lebrecht manages to unearth endless troves of fascinating minutiae. For instance, he relates how Phillips, the inventors of the cassette, partnered with Sony to develop the compact disc. The Dutch wanted the new format to be the same size as the cassette, however, the favorite piece of the Sony chairman's wife was Beethoven's 9th Symphony, too long to fit onto a disk of that size. To accommodate it, the disk's diameter was increased to allow 80 minutes of music, with the center hole corresponding to the size of the smallest Dutch coin.
The list of the "100 best" and "20 worst" recordings don't exactly complement each other. The "100" are sometimes, but not always, the "best;" Lebrecht chose many recordings primarily for their significance, be it artistic, historical, or political. The "20" were not chosen for their lack of significance; in most cases, they represent bad ideas or poor execution by people who should have known better.
Deserves to be placed aside next to the Penguin Guide...........2007-06-21
A fascinating and absorbing read, Lebrecht's expose into the demise of classical music is as revealing as it is heartbreaking. Ten years ago, I was fortunate enough to work at one of the top classical radio stations in the US--(KDFC Classical 102.1 FM in San Francisco)there, I acquired a passion for classical music, reading Grammaphone and the Penguin Guide to Classial Compact Disc's with a fervor as children do with comic books. In short, it was an education in many ways--music as an art form, the aquisition of a refined taste, and a practical education into a highly unpredicatable business.
Lebrecht's book sheds light on all the vanities, egos, and personalities in the industry--past and present. Here is Karajan--masestro grandioso--feared but respected, whose net worth at his death was estimated at over $500 million with most of it derived from reissues of his earlier and better performances. Here is Bernstein, who, considered a somewhat of a second-tier conductor, plagued with insecurities and pretentious self-doubt, would often exasperate orchestras without punctuality or form (often forcing entire orchestras to wait an hour or more before he took to the podium) with his disdain for the inviolate nature of some works that are an inherent part of a country's national identity. Although venerated as a national treasure, Lebrecht paints another dimension to Bernstein; he recalls how the conductor completely botched a recording session with BBC Orchestra to produce one of the "worst classical recordings of all time"--Elgar's Enigma Variations in 1982. A very sloppy and unprofessional approach to a job overall and a personal insult to the dead composer's memory and the English.
What is interesting about this book is how Lebrecht puts it all together; the rivalries between the major labels: Decca, DG, Phillips, EMI and their producers scrambling to be the first to sign an exclusive contract with the industry's power players--Bernstein, Solti, Rattle, among others; how "crossover" discs and performances(a Bono and Pavarotti duo easily comes to mind)ultimately spelled doom for serious classical music fan; how the major labels used sexy CD cover art of young and talented artists like Vanessa Mae, Anne Sophie Mutter and Charlotte Church to increase sales of an already declining market, and the unexpected rise of Klaus Heymann and NAXOS. Here is the budget CD tycoon who taught all the "majors" a valuable lesson by hiring lesser known and Eastern European orchestras looking for work and produced several Grammaphone award-winning discs with Vivaldi's Four Seasons taking away honors as one of the best-selling classical recordings ever produced topping sales of 1.16 million besting even the venerated Arthur Fiedler of the Boston Pops!
If you ever wanted to know the in and outs of a business as fascinating as the classical music industry, this is a must read.
Glad to finally meet Chopin.......2007-06-16
This book is an informative and enjoyable read but I'm most grateful for the Masterpieces List. I bought #15- Chopin Waltzes played by Dinu Lipatti and discovered the Chopin who all the shouting was about. Lipatti's Chopin is sparkling, witty and entirely lacks the dirge-like sound that the other artists in my small collection have. Wow! I can hardly wait to sample others from Lebrecht's list.
A most interesting, if rather depressing, book.......2007-06-15
Norman Lebrecht can always be counted on to stir things up, and this book is no exception. The first half is a brief history of the classical recording industry, which Lebrecht believes to be dead. The second half is an annotated list of recordings, 100 of the most significant of the century, and 20 that should never have been made. The tone is breezy, gossipy, and opinionated; the anecdotes are fascinating, and Lebrecht pulls no punches. One wishes he had checked facts a bit closer, however. For example: Gould's "first on a major label" Goldbergs were preceded by Landowska's on RCA; Rautavaara is by no means a minimalist composer; the Beaux Arts Trio recorded Beethoven's Triple Concerto with Haitink and the LPO, not Masur and the Leipzig Gewandhaus. But these are minor quibbles in what is a very recommendable read.

MBA Text.......2005-10-09
This book was required reading for an MBA class. The simplicity of the technical explanations, as well as the simple diagrams make it an easy book to understand. There are a few places where I wish the author would delve a bit deeper, on the topic of security as one example. Overall though, a good book for those who need a basic understanding of internet technology.
a good book to start if you are scared........2005-05-26
The author is one of the "founding fathers" of the internet, he does explain basic concepts clearly. Unfortunately, he doesn't have any sense of humor. The book reminded me a conversation between an old-fashioned professor and his grandkids. Also, some material is outdated in 2005, (e.g. there is a lot of pages devoted to the bulletin board system, and no mention of instant messaging.)
You're no "dummy" but new? This one's for you........2001-06-28
He's the leader in his field. I've used his books for teaching and as referrals. He's so readable but does not talk down to you like the silly "dummy" stuff. You'll be so glad you gave this a try.
A basic guide for novice users........2001-04-30
Although initially frightened by all the acronyms surrounding the Internet and its language, I was put as ease while reading Comer's book. I found that it was written for a person like myself. I have some amount of knowledge of how the Internet and other systems work, but I am a typical user of computer applications and am happy when my machine gives me the information I ask of it. Required reading in a college class is often the only reading I've done for the past seven years. I used to be a reader who read for many reasons. Some days I wanted to be transported away into a science fiction novel. Other days I wanted to live the life of another while reading a fascinating piece of fiction. Sometimes, due to necessity, I read a non-fiction work in order to educate myself just in case I need to know something. Upon picking up Comer's book, I felt that I didn't really need to know much about the Internet. However, after reading, I find that my curiosity was aroused. In fact, Comer dedicates the book to "Everyone Who Is Curious." I became one of these people. Comer's writing was a highlight of the book. The complex became simple in regards to understanding the inner-workings of different systems. I found this book to be a perfect companion for the class as it helped me understand a number of concepts in theories that I simply could not understand no matter how many people explained it in the weekly postings. While reading reviews about the book from an Internet book supply company, many critics are not bashful in their feeling that Comer spent too much time relating the history of the Internet to the reader. I wholeheartedly disagree with these critics and found that the history of the Internet had to be explained in order to fully understand why certain features of the Internet and its accompanying systems are in existence today. The book seemed to be quite simply a recap of all that has led up to today's modern systems. LANs, WANs, and other acronyms had to be explained for the Internet novice. Comer did an excellent job of introducing these areas and their relation to where we are today in regards to technology. Others may have wanted him to be somewhat controversial in his interpretations of where the Internet will lead us. For those people, I would suggest another text. For a person like myself, this text was near perfection. There is only major problem that I did have with Comer's book. With my limited knowledge does come some understanding of today's Internet markets. I believe that if Comer would have mentioned a few prominent companies while explaining certain aspects of the Internet, the book may have been easier to read. I found myself writing questions on the margins such as, "Is this what Netscape is?" His only mentioning of some real world company was of Purdue University. It is only as I write my response to this question that I read that he is a professor at that University. I'm not sure why companies would refuse to give permission for Comer to name them while explaining certain areas. One would think that free publicity is always welcome. I'm not sure if Comer is well known throughout the Internet world. Perhaps he is some type of radical that companies fear. Either way, it would have been easier to understand some concepts if the reader could relate them to aspects in the real world.
Amazing Book.......2000-08-10
Douglas Comer has an amazing ability to cut through the heavy fog that surrounds Internet technology. Many well trained and accomplished academics are terrible writers. I have wasted much money buying from these authors. I have read Douglas Comer's many books from detailed implentation of TCP/IP to overview of computer networks and internet. I am not surprised by the excellent quality of this book. I will buy any book anytime that Dr. Comer writes. I think this all the result of his pioneering reseach and great desire to teach.

Something for Everyone, but Sometihng Missing For Everyone.......2007-08-02
A good overall resource. There is an obvious bias towards rock music, which is understandable, as that's what's been most popular in the years coinciding with the advent of the record album. A few warnings: If your looking for jazz titles since the 50's or classical, you won't find much here. Most of the popular favorites are here (Sgt.Peppers,Thriller,etc.), but there are glaring omissions in each genre:Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler", Black Sabbath's " Master of Reality",and Earth,Wind & Fire's
"Spirit" are examples. Also, where's Foreigner and Journey at? Still, you'll find a lot of hidden treasures here. Maybe you'll enjoy discovering something you otherwise would not have heard.
Interesting.......2007-06-15
While it's not a perfect list, it's an interesting book with some good albums listed. One of the good things about it is that it doesn't stick to one genre or only to a few bands. It has rap albums, techno albums, rock albums, pop albums, many kinds. Though it isn't a really perfect list, I can think of many albums that would fit in the list perfectly, and it's a mystery why Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake are in it. But all in all it's an interesting book and has made me delve deeper into my parent's CD and Vinyl collection to find some gems.
No Cher. No Musicals. No Good.......2007-06-03
I have 3 books of series (books, movies , and this one), this one by FAR is the worst! I mean the selections they have there are totally unreasonable. I mean, you CAN'T die listening to some CD by "Korn" but you can perfectly die without listening to Cher's "Believe". I am a big "Cher" fan and there were none of her CDs in here. They should also have some musicals in there like "Evita", "Phantom Of The Opera", "Chicago" ,and "Wicked". But seriously no Cher!?!?!?!?
BIG FUN - COULD BE EVEN BETTER !.......2007-05-06
I bought my first album "My Generation" in 1965 and have been a dedicated follower of rock ever since. Last time around, I awarded the latest Rolling Stone Guide one star - but this one is a completely different matter. The well informed authors have brilliantly succeeded in writing a book that will be of great pleasure to both the rock nerd and the common man. I have a few comments, though.
1) You should stick to rock. I suspect that you are trying to guide open-minded rock fans into the wonderful world of jazz, but the topic is way too big and the selections will be very haphazard.
2) I question the decision to give each decade the same amount of space. Surely the 60s and 70s are much more worthwhile than later decades?
3) More than once I thought : "Gee, I thought I was the only person in the world aware of this forgotten gem!" But there is also some ugly omissions - have you ever heard about a group called LITTLE FEAT?? And these ones you should definitely hear before you die : Jack Bruce/Songs for a tailor, Family/Music in a Doll's House, 801 LIVE, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Procol Harum/A Salty Dog, Captain Beefheart/Clear Spot & Shiny Beast, Spirit-Spirit of 76, King Crimson/Red, Fripp/Exposure,Walker Bros/Nite Flights, Scott Walker/Climate of Hunter,Meters/Rejuvenation, the Searchers' late 70s albums for Sire, Richard & Linda Thompson/Shoot out the Lights, Jefferson Airplane/Crown of Creation, Ry Cooder/Paradise & Lunch, Yazoo/Upstairs at Eric's, Thunderclap Newman/Hollywood Dream, Graham Parker/Squeezing out Sparks, Bill Bruford/Feels Good to Me, Don Ellis at Fillmore, Bobbie Gentry/Delta Sweete & Local Gentry, Joe South/Introspect, Bill Withers/Still Bill, Colin Blunstone/One Year - and these are only the results of a quick brainstorming! And I also found a few artists very over-represented : Black Sabbath, Queen, Bee Gees, Morrissey, ELP, Metallica, and loads of (c)rap and out-dated techno.
But all in all : A very good job!
Eh..........2007-03-27
Wilco's A Ghost Is Born didn't make the cut, but the score to the Virgin Suicides did? W.T.F.? Radiohead's Amnesiac? I think I'd rather just die than have to listen to that crap again. Seriously, why does the world have to jerk them off every time they come out with an album? Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots makes it, but the Moon and Antarctica doesn't? Where is anything Will Oldham recorded? The Shins? I'll settle for anything after 2000 that wasn't beaten over my head that I had to like, but found myself doing anyway.

A Must Have Book.......2007-10-06
If you are doing any photo enhancing this is the only book you will need. I have read all of Scott's books and every time I am amazed at how many short cuts, tips and just plain great ideas I come away with and use on a regular basis. Scott's writing style is concise and very user friendly and the chapter intoductions will put a smile on your face!
Photoshop 101.......2007-09-30
If you're just getting into Photoshop CS3 this is the book for you. As usual, Kelby doesn't fool around with theory. He uses a direct step-by-step approach to show you how to handle a subset of Photoshop that includes those things most serious photographers need to do. Just the facts, Maam." If you want the whole enchilada though, you'll have to wait for Real World Photoshop CS3 by Blatner, Chavez and Fraser - if it ever gets into print.
The down side of Kelby's book is his style: He writes like a four-year-old showing the guests how cute he is. He tries awfully hard to be funny, but fails because he doesn't understand subtlety. If you can stand that kind of writing without developing an acute urge to regurgitate, this book is well worth your time and money.
The Definitive CS3 Book.......2007-09-29
As always, Scott's books are the best - I don't think I will need any other CS3 books.

Great book.......2007-09-29
Great pool of ideas and practices for the digital picture enthusiast. The only concern is the author sometimes gets too emotional and the process thus, too long. I think most people aren't interested in the cliches rather than the core content.
All you need.......2007-09-26
The Adobe Photoshop CS3 Book for Digital Photographers (Voices That Matter)
I am a Scott Kelby junky, and for good reason. In my opinion he is at his best in this particular book: clear and to the point, easy to understand and of course love the occasional humor.

I just recently finished it and I feel like having taken a course on Real Estate 101. It is helpful, practical, and easy to read. It has great tools like check-off lists and sample contracts all on a complimentary CD.

Worth the $$.
excellent advice for all homebuyers.......2007-01-11
Though this book's title specifies that it's for the first time buyer, my advice would be to pick it up and read it thoroughly regardless of how many times you've bought or built. It is a super compendium of all the steps a buyer needs to take, including information on motivation and emotions in home buying, taxes, paperwork, hiring a professional advocate such as a lawyer or real estate agent, and an in-depth discussion of how to find out your credit score. The section on credit also gives good advice about establishing and maintaining a good credit score that would be helpful for anyone trying to finance a large purchase. The information in this book should be available from the real estate agent you're working with, but it's good to know it yourself in case the agent isn't keeping your well-being in mind at all times.
I also appreciated the straightforward, matter-of-fact tone of this book. There were no embellishments, just the information in a logical, easy to understand format. It also includes a 15 page glossary, helpful for the novice. Five stars out of five.
Feel Confident Buying Your First Home.......2006-12-21

Exceeded my hopes and expectations.......2006-11-09
I was a little nervous about buying yet another book on how to buy my first home. After all, if I had spent all the money I spent researching the concept on my down payment... Well, ok may that's a bit of an exaggeration. I was still skeptical I could learn anything new, but I was wrong. This book is different from other guides in that it provides accessible information for me, the everyday Joe Q. public person. I don't have a trust fund to take care of my bills, my credit isn't pristine for the past billion years, and my credit-to-debt ratio reflects 8 years of college from a working class environment. Yet, this book gave me answers, strategies, and lots of helpful information that was more than just hope. It made it seem possible. Nothing is just glossed over; rather there are comprehensive guides, tools, and strategies to make owning your own home a reality. The forms included on the CD are a bonus as well! And in PDF format for a win so it's simply filling it out on screen, printing and moving forward with no excuses left! I can't wait till I finally close!

Could be better.......2006-03-22
Very good book; could have gone a little deeper into the mechanics of the closing process.
Practical, Real-World, Current Information.......2005-10-10
This book is an easy to read, step-by-step guide through that 'magical' period called 'Escrow.' Explanations are easy to understand yet thorough. I highly recommend this book.
Complete and Easy to Read........2005-01-11
Sandy Gadow's real estate closing book explained the part of the buying process which confuses most people, and where most of the costly mistakes can occur. I was able to understand the concepts and explanations which are provided, and felt confident enough to ask questions which I am sure saved me several hundreds of dollars. Before reading Sandy's book, I was intimidated by the professionals involved in a closing: for example, the attorney and closing agent, even the inspector involved. Knowing what questions to ask, I felt comfortable making lists of questions to ask, and which answers I needed. Although real estate laws vary state to state, this book does an excellent job of being all-inclusive for each state. Whether called "escrow", "closing" or "settlement", this book covers the essentials of a real estate deal.
In each chapter are "Tips" and "A Typical Misunderstanding" which lighten the reading and make the subject matter easy to follow along. The chapter on handling Tax-Deferred Exchanges was a welcome addition to the book. I was prompted to buy Sandy's book after watching her on CNN's show, "Open House."
I would recommend this book to anyone buying property, considering entering the escrow profession, or anyone interested in the investment aspect of real estate. I am now a real estate professional and am grateful for Sandy's book. I know the book helped me and I have recommended it to many of my friends and colleagues.
Good book, but...........2005-01-04
...it's the same book as her previous books - only the title has changed. If there were any minor editing done to the book, I didn't notice. If you've read or purchased one of her previous books don't waste your time or money.
Truth in Advertising.......2004-11-08
Gadow does an excellent job of providing a comprehensive view of a California Real Estate Closing. The subject matter is appropriate and well written. The illustrations, tables, charts and forms all useful. The only real problem with a volume like this is that all real estate is essentially LOCAL in nature.
Thus, many of Gadow's points and concepts are inapposite to other parts of the country. I found myself annotating my copy with local exceptions to Gadow's statements (I am a Real Estate Attorney in the Washington, DC metropolitan area). As with any volume with this much information there are certain errors that may have not been caught by the editors. For example, Gadow talks about obtaining multiple termite inspections. "Shopping for a clean termite inspection" and failing to disclose the known existence of termites is a patent violation of the Seller's duty to disclose known defects and could subject the homeseller to serious liability for any resulting damages incurred by the buyer.
Nevertheless, for the layman this book is an essential resource and I wish everyone of my clients would read it before coming to our office for their settlements.

Knowledge is power.......2007-05-23
This seems to be an excellent book. The truth will be when I'm ready to buy a home. I feel so much more knowledgable! It's easy to understand and well illustrated.
an "A" for effort.......2007-04-13
we purchased this relatively inexpensive paperback--inexpensive, based on the effort this writer put into research and readable format--and based on the glowing reviews we saw here on amazon. i fully appreciate the need for this kind of book and for the writers best intentions.
however, i'm here as a reader who relied on his construction ratings (the introduction credits the writer for these construction ratings) to buy not one, but three 'homes of merit' manufactured homes. this enabled me to see that despite receiving a healthy construction rating (7) in the price range, the manufacturer wasn't able to sustain a consistent product in a) the plant where carpeting was laid crookedly in one home, and quality of kitchen counters were not matched from one home to the next, the refrigerators were not the same cubic foot size or manufacturer, leaving the impression they picked them up at a discount house, b) the placement of the homes on the property (one cannot be matched at the top where the two halves come together), c) the subcontractors who install air conditioners (with tubing reversed in one home so that exhaust was expelled into the home)--this after delivering the a.c./heat pumps much later than contracted for--awkward when renters are also contracted to move in. even more awkward when the steps are not delivered or built, and the keys either don't work or are interchangeable from home to home--all of these occurred.
this is only the beginning of a long list of things that are not rectified by a manufacturer who knew it was our intention to purchase more homes. so while i commend grissim for his efforts to catalog the myriad considerations in buying a manufactured home, based on my own experience, i have to say the construction ratings for homes of merit are optimistic, to say the least. let the buyer beware.
Must Read Book for Anyone Buying Mfg Housing.......2007-02-16
This book has excellent (and recent) information regarding all manufactured housing builders in United States and is exceedingly helpful by rating the builders as to how they construct their product. The history of each company also clears up a lot of the confusion in knowing what brand belongs with what builder. It even gives information about which model names are high end/mid/low range within each builders line of models. The helpful information about which options should be upgraded according to financial ability helps buyer have an idea what to consider when ordering their new home.
Good source to compare MH manufacturers.......2006-08-23
Excellent book for comparing different brands/manufactureres of New Mobile Homes. I've found it very useful while searching for a used home to buy. I would like to see something like this for older models and obsolete brands but this one goes a long way. I now know which manufacturers sell in my state, What their typical prices are, How well they are constructed on a scale of 1 to 10. It does not break the value down to specific models but there is a chart i can compare with what ever home I'm looking at to see how it compares with the others.
If I had found this book at the library I would go out and buy my own copy.
If You're Looking for a New Home, Read This book!.......2006-04-28
If you have any questions or doubts about buying a manufactured home, buy this book! I thought I had done exhaustive research (well, I had!) on manufactured housing, but this book is an excellent and necessary tool to use during the process. During a meeting with a dealer, I used the Guide as a reference and the dealer finally asked me if he could see it. He flipped through a few pages and then wrote down the author's name and the title and asked me where I bought it! After reading the Guide, I visited two dealers in New Mexico that I originally passed by and I am seriously considering the product of one. And, trust me, I am so well informed now by reading and studying this Guide and it's companion book, The Complete Buyer's Guide to Manufactured Homes and Land, that no dealer will ever think I'm a dumb broad they can take advantage of! Thank you, John, for writing these books.
