a terrific journey home.......2001-12-28
for those of us who grew up in a certain era and were products of the commercial age this book will bring back many memories. having had a dad who worked in the field until i was 7 i was spoiled and got about anything i wanted. try explaining to a 7 year old that dad no longer gets all the freebies he wants! well worth the time for any boi boomer!
Pictures were much too fuzzy........2000-08-29
I liked the catalog, but was dissapointed to see that all of the pictures were black and white (I think I do remember pages in the 60's that had color). It looks as though someone just copied the pictures on a plain copier, and slapped this book together. The idea was very good, but don't expect the quality of true Sears Catalog pages.
Ah, the memories.......1999-10-12
I come from a family of 7 boys. We all grew up wishfully dreaming every Christmas of GI Joe and erector sets found on the pages of the Sears Wishbook. This book brought so many memories rushing back - of things I fondly remembered and things I had forgotten about - I can't count them. My wife bought it for me last Xmas, I'm going to buy a copy for all my brothers this Xmas.
A fantastic "time machine" resource of boy baby boomer toys.......1999-06-19
While my family didn't really shop much out of the Sears Catalog, the pictures and descriptions of the toys in this book are as close to a time machine as I can imagine. As I flipped through the pages, toys that either I or my brother or my friends used to own and play with jumped out at me, one after another.. as I thought "Geeze! I had one of those!" or "Wow! I always wanted one of those!" :) This book is sheer nostalgia for guys who grew up in the 50s and early 60s. And the original prices for the toys are unbelievable... just a couple bucks, many for less than a dollar (!) for toys that now bring hundreds on the various web auction sites or at antique malls. I was also fascinated to see how many toys were sold back then that threw off sparks, or fired objects, or involved electricity or hot plastic, metal, all kinds of things considered so horribly "hazardous" today in our modern politically correct world, where the fun seems to have been legislated out of nearly everything. Back then, toy cars that "threw off sparks" were actually advertised as that being a fun feature, not a safety hazard! This is also a valuable resource for old toy buyers and sellers, just to be able to see an original illustration with its original retail price and to know what year it was made and first sold. If you can't get in a time machine and go back to a 1950s toy store, this book is just about the next best thing.

Great Saturday afternoon read.......2004-02-21
Every page you go "oh yeah" I remember that one ..
Who Knew that Dolls Aren't A 'Girls' Toy'?.......2001-10-26
As a collector of hard plastic dolls, I'd hoped that this would be a helpful guide to identifying dolls of the 1950s and determining their original accessories. But there are very few dolls depicted and the coverage is inconsistent. There are no dolls in the first selection (for 1950), 2 pages for 1951, none for 1952, none for 1953, 2 pages for 1954, 5 pages for 1955, 1/2 page for 1956, none for 1957, none for 1958, none for 1959, 5 pages for 1960 (that year's excerpt from the Wish Book is all dolls), 1/2 page for 1962, 1 page for 1963, none for 1965, 2 pages for 1966, none for 1967, 2 pages for 1968, and 2 pages for 1969.
The explanation for this cursory treatment of dolls in a book titled "Girls' Toys"? The author evidently was reserving them for another compilation, advertised in this volume, titled _Doll and Teddy Bear Department_. That book showcases the doll and bear pages from the _Sears WishBooks_ from 1950-69. (...)
Aside from silently restricting the doll-coverage in order to produce a further volume, the author has selected for some years pictures of exactly the same toys (the electric piano, the tea sets, the toy kitchens), so the coverage is repetitive.
I was led to buy this book by the recommendations of the other reviewers, but if, like me, your primary interest is in the 1950s and in doll collecting, I would advise you to save your money.
Awe Those Childhood Memories!.......2000-05-20
This is really a great book for the Baby Boomer Generation! I have a super time just looking at all the childhood toys that I had totally forgotten existed. My Favorites are from the 1960's! If you are a Chatty Cathy collecctor then this is a Must Have book....Her Sears ads are in here!
An invaluable resource for collectors........1998-12-30
Thomas Holland's book Girls' Toys of the fifties and sixties is a faithful reproduction of the fantastic Sears Christmas catalog toy pages from 1950 to 1969. The large 8 1/2 x 11 inch format of the book allows it to show close ups of the popular toys from each of these years. These pictures are an invaluable resource to help collectors of toys from this era decide what pieces actually came with the toys. As a collector of tin dollhouses, I found the pictures a huge help in identifying the furniture and tiny accessories for each of my houses. The only drawback to the book is the fact that it is in black and white. I enjoyed this book immensely, it was like being a kid again, devouring each page of toys and memories.

Timeless Christmas tale for everyone.......2005-12-16
I sometimes forget about this book but every year when I go searching the shelves for an appropriate Christmas book to read to a small child I know I smile when I find this one. I have long been a fan of the author's books that were written for adults but I have been enamored of this particular story since I was about eight years old when my Mother ordered a copy through the school book club order forms. It is the story of chances being taken and following opportunities in the funniest of fashions. A child running away or toward something and a little doll wanting to be loved. It sounds like a rather simple story and in some ways it is but there is a very common theme that everyone wants to be loved and to love and this is a story of people arriving to that point.
While this edition does not have the red and green drawings I hold a certain nostalgia for; the illustrations by Barbara Cooney capture the gentle spirit of the story.
The author has such a talent for describing small details that any person (adult and child alike) can relate to so it is quite easy to read yourself into the story.
A genuinely charming book.
Cute Christmas story and animated feature.......2005-10-23
The animated version of this wonderful book was called "The Wish that Changed Christmas" and can be found on VHS.
Never knew there was a book.......2005-09-06
I am actually looking for the animated television special that was on about ten years ago-does anyone know what it was called? I couln't find it with the title of this book.
THANKS!
My Favorite Childhood Tearjerker.......2004-11-05
Even at 39, the end of this story brings me to tears....a sweet and wonderful book that I delight in sharing with my own little girl.
A wonderful holiday story with a very happy ending.
--Wishes can come true--.......2004-03-20
THE STORY OF HOLLY AND IVY is the tale of Ivy a small orphan girl who creates a pretend grandmother and then really tries to find someone who can be that real person for her. She leaves the orphanage at Christmas and is hopeful that her dreams will come true. She also longs for a beautiful doll and sees one in the window of a toy store. The doll's name is Holly and she has also been wishing; however, her wishes are for a little girl who will love her.
This book has everything; a toy store filled with wonderful toys that have personalities of their own, including a somewhat sinister owl named Abracadabra. We also meet Mrs. Jones who is lonely for a child and decides to decorate her house for Christmas as if she was expecting a child to visit. Her husband is a policeman who finds Ivy and brings her home. The book is appropriate for children ages 5-10 and I think that most children would love the story.
This is a very colorful book with lovely illustrations by Barbara Cooney. The author is Rumer Godden who is one of my favorite writers. Over the last few years, I've been locating any of her books that I can find for my library, including her stories for children. I'm writing reviews in the hope that her beautiful stories will continue to be read.

It's almost Christmas and it hasn't snowed yet. As the farmer naps on his small farm, he dreams of being covered in a gentle blanket of new snow. Then, one by one, he dreams of each of his five animals (aptly named One, Two, Three, Four, and Five) being covered as well. When he awakens, he discovers that real snow--not dream snow--has fallen. And "Oh my! Oh my! I almost forgot," the farmer shouts, and, bundling up, hurries out to his tree (named Tree) with a box and a sack, looking remarkably familiar in his white beard and red suit. After decorating Tree, the farmer shouts "Merry Christmas to all!" and pushes a button for a surprise Yuletide jingle.
Young fans of Eric Carle's The Very Quiet Cricket, The Very Clumsy Click Beetle, and other multisensory books, will delight in pushing the same microchip button the farmer pushes to hear the tinkling, oddly eerie holiday tune. In an even more unusual departure from standard picture books, Carle inserts a clear plastic sheet, covered with snowflakes and a white blanket, before each illustration of the dreaming farmer and his animals. Turn the plastic page to discover what kind of critter lies beneath the snow. Carle's magnificent collages, as always, are the heart and soul of his books. (Ages 3 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

Dream Snow.......2007-01-16
What a delightful book! Not only does it help develop a child's counting skills, but the pictures are wonderful and the surprise ending is sure to bring a smile! I not only have a copy of this book for my own child, but have given copies as gifts.
Dram Snow by Eric Carle.......2007-01-10
Although I liked this book (which I purchased for my grandkids), it is not one of my favorite Eric Carle books. It plays music at the end of the story, but it is very short and not very loud. I did like the see-through pages throughout the book.
Dream Snow.......2007-01-10
A delightful tale to brighten the holidays. This is one of Carle's finest!!! Each time I read it the children in the class were tickled with the magic at the end!! I would recommend it to moms,, dads, grams and teachers!!!
transmits the magic of Christmas like few other books.......2006-12-15
I have read this to my kids more than 100 times, and every time I feel as moved by the story as they are. This is simple and beautiful experience, bringing me back to dream moments in my childhood that now belongs to my children.
Dream Snow.......2006-11-03
You can't go wrong with Eric Carle! The kids love the music at the end of the story!

I read this book about a year ago. A friend lent it to me and I loved it! I then sadley realized that it was out of print. But, I love it so much, I've been thinking of buying it used.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I have!

When Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield give each other perfect present for each other, they argue about who is being selfish. This leads to the dolls.
To help stop arguing, their grandparents give them twins dolls! Dolls are for babies, the think. Then when they solve a riddle, magic unfolds. An evil sorcerer and two princes are the main focus. Will the twins ever get back to Sweet Valley? And more important - will they ever see each other again?
Imaginative Adventure in a Strange Land.......2002-11-19
The writer's imagination was working very well when she invented this marvellous fantasy, one to rival Enid Blyton. At Christmas time,Elizabeth and Jessica (identical twins) follow their dolls, which have come to life, into a vortex that transports them to a strange and scary land.Meet monsters, mermaids, unicorns and one meeeean wizard. Will the twins make it back to the world they know?To do so,they will have to pass the ultimate test.
Truly inspirational.......2002-06-06
I probably first read this book 6 or 7 years ago, but I make a point of reading it every year since then around Christmas time. I'm 19 now, and I still find this book extremely entertaining. When I was 12, this book inspired me to write a fantasy book. I'm still working on revising it to this day. I would recommend The Magic Christmas not only to Sweet Valley fans, but also to any fan of magic or fantasy.

Wodnerful Book To Occupy the Kids........2002-04-04
"Teddy Bears Trim The Tree", created and written by Sam Williams and illustrated by Jacqueline McQuade. Scholastic, 2000.
Sam Williams has written about the Teddy Bear's hunt for the perfect Christmas Tree. They are helped on their way by cooperative Snowmen as a pair of raccoons, in woolen winter caps, run by. The reader is encouraged to help the sleigh (with the perfect tree), slide down the hill. Then, the book's centerpiece pops up to a beautifully trimmed tree and the next page shows Santa alighting on the Bears' roof. The book is nicely illustrated with blues and violets on the outdoor scenes while warm yellows, reds and oranges dominate the indoor pictures. The illustrator and the author have produced a book to remember.
Five stars would have been assigned if the moving "pull-the-tab" items were more sturdy.
I have three grandsons, and, in my humble opinion, the young boys are rougher on books than are young girls. So, on the page where the Snowmen help the Teddy Bears, the young boys tend to pull the sleigh up and down too quickly, with the result that the paper rips. Further, there is a note, in small print, that warns you, " Before turning the page, push the sleigh back up to its starting position". Adults might push the sleigh up, but children tend to want to turn the page to continue with the story. You have to be careful on some pages of this book so that you do not crumple the moving items. The book is, however, an ideal way to keep young children busy while Christmas preparations occupy the adults of the family.

Lovely story........2007-06-27
This is a long read aloud (one or two sittings) but a great one. I have used it successfully with 3rd and 4th graders (large group) and with any age above 3 (one-on-one).
A must read for the Christmas season!.......2007-01-26
The delightful Story oF Holly And Ivy is a must read at Christmas time.
I recommend for children ages 5-12.
The wonderful illustrations by Barabara Cooney makes this book a classic to be read again and again.
Rumer Godden has written an exciting story about chances and most of all wishes.
Placed in an era where life was simple and gifts were few.
This is a story of a determined orphan, a wishing doll, and a hopefull woman wishing for a child.
The charactors are weaved in perfectly to keep you on the edge of your seat, to hope and to pray that it
all works out.
Save more than an hour to read this story.
Since I was a little girl . . . my favorite Christmas book!.......2006-11-28
Like another reviewer, I am now 25 years old, and I still read this book to myself (or sometimes to my kitty!) every single year before Christmas. It is such a wonderful story, unlike any other Christmas tale. I put on some soft Christmas carols, light a pine candle, and sit by the woodstove. It never gets old, and the illustrations become richer to me each year. I can't wait to read this story aloud to my children some day.
So Glad This is Back in Print!.......2006-11-26
Despite a longish text for a book in picture-book format, this exquisitely told tale has held the interest of every child to whom I've ever read it. Barbara Cooney's illustrations are a perfect match for this much-loved and well-remembered Christmas story with a perfect O.Henry ending.
Story of Holly and Ivy.......2006-11-25
My daughter who is now 22 and I read the Story of Holly and Ivy every year in
December before Christmas. I started reading it to her when she was about 3 or 4 years old and as she got older she would read it to me. We would read a few pages every day. This is still our favorite children's Christmas book and we are amazed that no one has heard of it and that we have been unable to locate it at bookstores.

Book Description
Snow babies appeal not only to Christmas enthusiasts, but to collectors of dolls, figurines, and miniatures. Principally manufactured in Germany in the early part of this century, these tiny grouted figures decorated cakes in England and mantel pieces in the United States. Today they are avidly sought by collectors, who still use them to create little winter scenes. This carefully researched and documented book explores the origins of snow babies. (Were they created to honor Marie Peary, the daughter of Admiral Peary and the first white baby born in Northern Greenland?) The collection of 700 color photographs, the largest ever published, displays exquisite all-white pieces and the smaller action snow babies. It also introduces the reader to the rare blue and pink snow pieces. Included are chapters on bisque Santas (over 150 of them), elves, dwarves, snowmen, buildings, animals, and other pieces that are collected and displayed with snow babies. A rarity scale and price guide are included.

The "Bible" for Snowbabies.......2002-09-12
This is an excellent reference book. I have used it for years to help me date, identify, and price older snowbabies. There are many color pictures, all of which are clear and sharp. Good descriptions. Easy to follow price list. If you collect older snowbabies you will want to own this book. Watch Mary Morrison's website for a new book that she will be publishing. As good as this one is I am looking forward to the next one.

Book Description
Mr. and Mrs. Doll and their six children, Nurse and the old Cook all lived in a house which had no front and belong to Susan. Susan was just an ordinary-sized little girl with taffy colored pigtails. But to the dolls she was a very Big, very Wonderful, very Important Person.
There was one short night in every year when they needed no help from Susan - that Wonderful Night when all Dolls come alive and can speak.
An exciting story full of ups and downs scaled to dollhouse proportions, full of sense and nonsense, fantasy and truth, with glimpses of the Christmas miracle that can happen anywhere - even in a dollhouse. A different sort of Christmas book, one that will be enjoyed at any time of the year and by the whole family.
Customer Reviews:
My very favorite dollhouse book .......2006-07-19
If you or some little person you know likes dolls and doll houses, read this book to them. Big Susan is the name of the little girl who "owns" the doll house that the Doll family lives in. The story focuses on Christmas Night when the dolls come alive. It is a family story of love, sacrifice and sharing. It is a great book for little people who know their dolls can talk and come alive when they are asleep.
I checked this book out of the library as much as I could get away when I was a kid. My local library burned when I was in high school, and one of the library staff asked if there was anything I wanted as a souvenir. I asked for one thing, "Big Susan. I still have the book and reread it several times a year.
My favorite book from childhood.......2006-04-04
I cannot believe it! I have been looking for this book for 53 years! I had read and loved it to death as a 7 year old - I borrowed it so many times from the school library that I practically wore it out. Once I became an adult I wanted to find this precious book for my own daughter and alas - it was no longer in print. I hunted and hunted!!! NOW - here it is again! I now can share this magical story with my granddaughter! I always thought that MY dollies came to life when I slept each night - that book proved it! A MUST for every little girl and boy to read. Pure magic!!!
Childhood revisited.......2005-09-07
Big Susan and I became friends 45 years ago, give or take. But with moving etc. I didn't know where she was. Having seen her advertised I thought I would enjoy her again. My only children are cats, so I couldn't really share Susan with them, which may have been why I lost track of her. Having had a learning disability I read slowly when I was young, I'm much faster now, and remembering her so fondly I gave myself a treat.
Big Susan is a reminder of gentler and simpler times, when things ran on imagination and good will, and not on batteries and lasers. While I loved it, I tend to be from a less bombastic generation, but I still think this is a lovely book that should be enjoyed and imagined with.
BIg Susan.......2005-07-07
A wonderful book written and illustrated a while back by renouned author and illustrator Elizabeth Orton Jones. Mz. Jones recently passed away and will be sorely missed in our community.
Big Susan by Elizabeth Orton Jones.......2005-05-12
Did you ever imagine that the dolls in your dollhouse came alive at night? As a little girl, this book was one of my favorites. What a delightful image it is, seeing the world from the dolls point of view looking out from the dollhouse. The beautifully detailed and lifelike illustrations are fascinating. After I read this book to my own little girl, she took the book from me just to study the pictures. Truly a beautiful children's classic written in the 40's, which still captivates imaginations.

A Very Pretty Christmas Story That Doesn't Offend Anyone.......2007-01-24
Let me start off by saying that I am a Christian who knows that Christmas is about the birth of Jesus Christ. That being said, this little book is about a new baby pony named Rose Blossom and her first experience with a Christmas party in Ponyville. Although it never mentions Jesus, it also doesn't mention Santa either, which makes it a nice, neutral story about a happy party taking place during Christmas. The book's cover is beautiful and glittery.
