Book Description
Civil War is encompassing the entire Marvel Universe, and the effects of the war are being felt by every hero, villain and civilian. In Civil War: Choosing Sides, five stories shine a spotlight on the wildcards and impact players whose part in the Civil War has yet to be told - including Daredevil/Iron Fist, U.S.Agent, the Irredeemable Ant-Man, Venom and even... Howard the Duck? Then in Winter Soldier: Winter Kills, James Buchanan Barnes, Captain America's one-time partner Bucky, faces his first Christmas of the 21st century - and the truth of the terrible things he was forced to do as the Winter Soldier. And with Cap caught in a conflict he can neither take a side of - or understand - what moves can he make to try to redeem himself? Later, in Civil War: The Return, two of the universe's greatest heroes are confronted with pasts they can't leave behind in two heart-rendering tales. On Earth, the Sentry confronts his inner demons as the shadows of past and future battles tear him apart. Within The Negative Zone, the walls of 42 are pulled back to reveal the return of one of the Marveldom's greatest heroes. And in She-Hulk, Civil War threatens the rights of every American super hero. So whose side will Marvel's top superhuman lawyer fight for? And how can she possibly choose, when she feels one way as She-Hulk, and another as Jen Walters? Collects Winter Soldier: Winter Kills, Civil War: Choosing Sides, Civil War: The Return and She-Hulk #8

A worthy Civil War companion.......2007-06-25
Civil War: Marvel Universe collects various issues and one-shots taking place during and after the cataclysmic events of Marvel's Civil War mega event, and features a variety of writing and artist talent as well. Beginning with She-Hulk, who finds herself partnered up with former New Warriors members Justice and Rage, who seek to clear their deceased team mates name's in the wake of the Stamford tragedy. Next up is Choosing Sides, which focuses on various wild cards in the Civil War, including Venom, Ant-Man, Iron Fist, the U.S. Agent, and Howard the Duck (yes, you read that right, Howard the Duck!) and the roles they plan to play. Civil War: The Return focuses on the Sentry and his decision in supporting Tony "Iron Man" Stark in the pro-registration act, as well as detailing the return of Captain Mar-vel (no Shazam needed) to the Marvel universe. Finally, Civil War: The Initiative details the aftermath of the Civil War as Tony Stark begins his plans for organizing and controling every superhero team on the continent as a new team rises from the ashes of Alpha Flight, and the new team of Thunderbolts (featuring Venom and Bullseye) make their debut. The TPB features a variety of writers including Warren Ellis, Brian Michael Bendis, Paul Jenkins, Robert Kirkman, Dan Slott, and Michael Avon Oeming among others; while the artists featured include the great Marc Silvestri, Tom Raney, Leinil Francis Yu, and Scott Kolins among others as well. All in all, though it has a bit of an uneven feel and some plot holes (to be filled by the other Civil War tie-ins), Civil War: Marvel Universe is a great companion piece to Marvel's mega event, and is definitely worth picking up for fanboys and Civil War collectors alike.
Now this is my kind of TPB!.......2007-06-24
I'm a huge fan of the Civil War series and I have to say that the Civil War: Marvel Universe book totally exceeded my expectations. The artwork amazed me and its not one, but many different styles by the very talented artists who brought the illustrations to life. Not only do you hear stories from great characters like She-Hulk, Venom, Iron Fist, Daredevil, Ant-Man, U.S. Agent, Captain Marvel, The Sentry, and the incredibly witty and funny Howard the Duck, but you also get to see the first stories of the Civil War Initiative. I've gotta say, this book got me excited for the Initiative series and I can't wait to read more!

nice basic encyclopedia.......2007-01-06
nice basic encyclopedia for ppl who wanna review some chracters or learn some unknowm material to them, but it is alil out of date so some recent info are missing
Final Chapter in a Unique Classic.......2006-09-27
Note: The description for this volume provided by Marvel (on Amazon and the sites of other online book-sellers) is really a description of Vol. 2, not this, the 3rd volume. Also, this series origionally came out nearly 20 years ago, so it is quite dated, but still provides more info. than any other book of its sort, and based on the recent Marvel Encyclopedias (which I loved but were NOTHING next to the level of info. put into the Hand Book series), nothing like them will ever be seen again.
Never before nor hence has there ever been such an indepth, painfully detailed source book of information for Marvel Comics (or any other company for thart matter). The majority of this, the Third and final volume in the initial Delux edition of the Marvel Handbook, tome collects the "books of the dead" in the series, meaning the info here relates mostly to those Marvel characters who were considered dead and buried for good at the time they were written. However many of them have, as Marvel is prone to do, come back to life by one means or another, since the Hand Book was written. Also included is the Appendix of Alien Races, a fair handling of the alien races in the Marvel Universe seperate from the major three (Kree, Skrull and Shiar). Around 100 alien races are discussed.
The high-lights of the books of the dead are mostly of the Marvel Sci-Fi realm, such as Capt. Marvel (Mar-Vel), Thanos and Adam Warlock and crew. Other fun entries include losts of the old western characters, the Rawhide Kid included, who has recently been "outed"; mini-profiles of the surprisingly high number of Savag Land-unique races; and an extensive entry covering the Vampires as they are/were in the Marvel Universe.
Also, it is here that the X-Men and X-Factor etc... are covered in the few ramaining pages of the last issue (non-books of the dead that is) before going into the extensive Alien Races Appendix.
This volume, and the previous two (meaning those of the DELUX editions), are simply a must-have for any fans of Marvel in general, but this volume is a necessity for specifically those following the sci-fi and X-Men families. Also, if you read and loved the Earth X series, you simply can not pass this up.
I only have two small criticism:
1. This volume is much shorter than the previous two but still costs the same.
2. Through out the whole run of the series the appendix is referenced, but nowhere in this or the previous two volumes does the appendix ever manage to reach the point of covering the teams and characters demoted to it, instead the whole of it heavily focused on "alternate realities", and lots of space was used for the rambling of the creative teams behind this stellar gem of nerdom.
Yet neither of these petty complaints take away from the volume or series as a whole.
Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:
Too narrow of focus and too slim on content.......2006-12-19
The book is thinner than I expected/hoped (guess I should have checked the page count) and has only seven pages of source material for the massive marvel world. There is absolutely no support from Marvel and only two sourcebooks ever published, so that's huge in my opinion. Most of the book is dedicated to the system. You can however find descriptions of 40 heroes and villains from the marvel universe which is nice but brief.
Also, the system is too narrowly focused for me because the range of abilities goes from 1 to 10 leaving very little room for the awesome range of ability that should exist in the marvel universe.
That it is more free form and somewhat simpler than many RPGs may appeal to some people and the game is presented as though you are writing your own comic which has a nice sense of style.
Great game for frist time gamers.......2006-02-22
This is a great game for frist time players but if you are use to having dice to roll can be hard.
Lack of specificity is both strength and weakness.......2005-05-25
MURPG has its strengths, foremost among them ease of play. However, there is very little differentiation between characters of approximate strength and/or ability (as already mentioned).
MURPG does have one significant strength that its developers may have overlooked. Because it focuses on recource allocation, it is excellent for online play (no fudging of die rolls). In the online groups in which I participate, the focus is more on the cinematic nature of the game, rather than the mechanics itself. Its simplicity allows the players a great deal of freedom, and allows for a load of fun.
I recommend this system for novice roleplayers, or players wishing for a quick & easy system of not-so-serious roleplaying.
The Perfect Game..........2004-11-29
At first, I was hesitant to buy this book coz i under-estimated its size, plus it got no dice roll stuff. But to my surprise, it got all that i was expecting for a well designed and well balanced game of Superheores/Supervillains.
Though this book doesn't contain the complete lists of all the superheores that every marvel comic fan is expecting, but hey, the rules are all here. No more tons of cross referencing to several books. Just one, simple, straight to the point rules. I think this is the way how RPG should be.
The stone system is cleverly designed! Just like in real life. The more you exert effort, the more you will succeed, but you will most likely tire yourself out. Resting is a solution, but can you do it if you are badly outnumbered by the bad guys? This is the thrill and the challenge! It's a matter of how wisely you use the energy that you have.
The character progression takes a bit long coz you need to record the actions/stunts/experiences that your character had gone through. But it's just like telling a story by keeping a record of it. And it's no nonsense coz the experience speaks for itself, unlike the other RPG. The action that you record will determine your action difficulty to perform. The more experience you are in an action, the less difficulty you will encounter in doing it again.
This is a major improvement to the Marvel saga system. The powers that were vague in the previous rules were made clear in this book. Like the Mastery of Elements, it gives a well defined limitation on up to how wide the scope of ones power can reach. Having a Mastery of magic as an action doesn't mean you have a god-like power to do almost anything you want, but simply what you can only do in a balanced manner. Overall, it's a nice game. Greatly recomended.
An awesome RPG..........2004-05-13
This is the first RPG I've come across that uses a system with no dice! Which means it makes for easy online adaptation and puts the game more in the hands of the players. It's got tons of good information, statistics and biographies for all of the biggest names in Marvel, a built-in starter mission, and a flexible creation system allowing you to create your very own super heroes and villains.
There are really only a few problems I have with this book. First off, it's a really small book. While it is a lot cheaper then all the other RPG rule books out there, it seems like they could have included a lot more without having to raise the price. Also, the system has a very slow skill development proccess. It will take your character a very long time before they will be able to use their skills as well as the characters from the comic books can. Aside of that though, it's a lot of fun and a much better system then all the dice-based ones rolling around.

Loved it!.......2006-06-17
I know there are alot of things that could be complained about if you want to get picky, there's bound to be SOMEONE who doesn't have a full entry, or their own entry, and it's true, there ARE a few...but SERIOUSLY! The most comprehensive encyclopedia of the Marvel character universe ever undertaken! No longer is your favorite hero or villian reduced to a maximum of one page, now whatever it takes to flesh out the bio, the more that's in there. Rich, imaginative diagrams and spec sheets of just about everything non-living that has an importance in Marvel. Iron Man's armor, the Avengers Mansion, too many to list. Read the whole first edition in a sit down, I remember my brother buying the original series, simply overwhelming, and a MUST OWN for any more than casual Marvel fan. Just got notified that Edition2 is on it's way, I can't wait!!!
It's in black and white .......2006-05-01
It's great that editions 1-7 are collected here but it would have been MUCH better if the illustrations were in color.
A complete paperback compilation of the deluxe edition..........2006-04-21
...in three installments. I did not have the privilege of owning the original run of the Deluxe Edition of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, but I do have the trade paperback of ten volumes, which unfortunately when read by volume will fall apart on the spine (the 1st 4 volumes were carelessly bound). For the first time I read the entries for such obscure Marvel characters as Cloud, Arnim Zola, Blackout (which has another entry of the Deluxe Edition's Book(s) of the Dead), and for the first time I see the original feature illustrations for Angel, Cyclops, and Hawkeye which were replaced in the trade paperback edition. For a Marvel fan who has lived throughout the seventies and eighties this is the book for u, the era before the so-called "Dark Ages" of comicbook. Here are the Marvel characters who ante-dates the overexposure of the X-Men and the antihero and the big gun types. This is the expansion of the original run of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe (1983-1984), which explains why most feature illustrations of characters are exactly the same as in the first run. The only handicap of this series was that it failed to materialize its own Appendix, unlike in the first series, which published them on the back of the backcover.

Marvel's late-'80s Essential Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe (Deluxe Edition) was a wildly ambitious attempt to collect definitive biographical information on every single Marvel character. It's perfectly suited to Marvel's Essentials line: Since the series is intended more for reference than for reading cover to cover, the black-and-white lightweight-paper format isn't that much of a drawback, and the inexpensive price makes it affordable to collect all three 400+-page volumes. (The earlier non-Deluxe version is short enough to fit in one volume.) Volume 2 covers issues 8-14, and characters from Magus to Wolverine, with stops along the way for Man-Thing, Moon Knight, Shanna the She-Devil, Silver Surfer, Spider-Man, Ultron, and the Valkyrie among others. Yes, the information is dated, and these days you can probably find something similar on the Web somewhere, but this kind of nostalgia is exactly what the Essentials line is for. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:
A Must-Have for hard-core Marvel Fans.......2006-10-03
Okay, so granted the info here is nearly 20 yrs. out of date, but it still is the paragon to which any and all comic book guides should strive to emulate. When Marvel undertook the Delux Handbook series they went didn't hold anything back. The history of even the most obscure characters is delved into with great detail, and the specs on all armor, wepons, etc... is beyond fantastic. Also, the section of each entry relating to the various powers or applications of weapons and armor and such are given great consideration; the authors do their best to give a logical and scientific explaination to each and every one of these subjects, as well as to how said individual got their powers or skills.
I can't say it enough, NO bit of info was deemed too mundane or irrelevant to leave untouched... and the scope of the material covered goes above and beyond the major players of the Marvel Universe. Granted, not EVERY SINGLE last person, place or thing is covered, but they went as far as possible to do so, and no other source book for any single form of writing in the genre has ever been as grand in scope and detail; the more recent Marvel Encyclopedias, although fun and more up-to-date are nothing like the Delux Handbook series, and only the volumes focusing on the Fantastic Four and Spiderman even come close to this land-mark achievement. Also, the wealth of artwork presented here is stunning, though not all of it is the best, the people who put this together did a great job of covering the entries at their best representations over the years.
In this, the 2nd volume (of three, though there is one that came before, the non-delux, and one that is due out that served as a late-1980s update) the latter half of all things marvel from "M" (Magus) to "W" (Wolverine) are covered.
If you happen to have any of the "prestige format" reprints of the series, it might still be worth it to you to pick up these volumes, as those books, which were reprints of the orig. series but collecting 2 issues per volume and on better quality paper, left out several entries per issue that are found in these "Essential" reprints.
There is little to nothing to say that is bad about this series, but I will give a few "constructive warnings" to those interested in buying the series.
1. The reprints, like all those in the "Essential" reprint line of Marvel Comics, are not in color and are in black and white. Personally, I prefer the black and white over the color versions, as it gives it the nostalgic feel that to me makes it all the better.
2. The appendix to the series directs the reader, many, MANY times to appendix entries that will never show, namely any and all refering to any characters, objects or teams simply do not show up, ever, in the appendix of any of the issues. It is possible this was remedied in the late-'80s update, but I never got those when they first came out so I can't say for sure. However, the appendix of alien races, seen in the 3rd volume of the Essential reprints, does not dissappoint.
3. As I said before, this series came out nearly 20 years ago, so if you are looking just for up-to-date info, this series is not for you (and due to the short-commings of the more recent Marvel Encyclopedia hard-backs you pretty much will have to rely on the internet for USEFUL current info., and on-line, its all free!)
All in all, I highly reccomend this volume and the 1st and 2nd to any and all Marvel fans. I randomly picked up and issue of this series in the '90s, and its what truly sold me on Marvel Comics when I first started out. Even then the series was about 10 yrs out of date but it was a big help in getting into Marvel regardless.

STAN LEE FINALLY TEAMS-UP WITH HIS CREATIONS!.......2007-04-14
It's Stan "The Man" Lee teaming up with some of the most recognisable and iconic characters ever to be created -- by him, no less! What else need you know?
Now, if only Marvel will allow him to Team-Up with Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny, The Tooth Fairy and maybe even Jesus Christ (assuming that Big Foot's too busy to return his calls, of course!) then - and only then - will my comic collection be complete!

A great addition!.......2004-05-21
This book is filled with more information about the Hulk and the Avengers then I could find on any online source. It has a lot of new profiles for heroes and villains encountered by both the Avengers and the Hulk, which naturally leads to a few villains and heroes that have encountered other Marvel characters like Scorpion and Shocker from Spiderman. It's also got a lot of new actions, options, modifiers, and a few advantages, disadvantages, and challenges. It's as big an upgrade to the game as the guide to the X-men was if not bigger. The only thing I thought I would get that I didn't was a better description of Asguard and other magical realms. Oh well, aside from that, it's a great upgrade.
If you're interested in the Avengers, find the old TSR books.......2004-03-29
Once again the people in charge of Marvel roleplaying books have made a blunder. Their inability to even give the complete Avengers roster shocked me! I intended to buy this book til I thumbed through it, and couldn't find updated stats for Hank Pym. If you're at all interested in Marvel roleplaying games go find TSR's old MSH system, while a bit old and out of date both Avengers Assembled and Avengers Coast to Coast are deeper and more worthwile!
Battle Ready!.......2004-02-14
The Avengers. Earth's Mightiest Heroes. With this, the third supplement from Marvel entertainment and Q.E.D. Games, you can take on the role of many Avengers. It's got a great list of stats fols. Great supplement for the best Super Heroes RPG on the market. If you have reservations, don't... buy this game.

Customer Reviews:
Stan Lee's Amazing Marvel Universe is an entertaining read.......2007-04-07
Surely, an adequate test of whether or not you've purchased a good book is a faint sadness at turning the last page. If so, then Stan Lee's Amazing Marvel Universe is a good book.
Written by Roy Thomas, a Marvel scribe and editor for many years, the book catalogs the major works of Stan Lee at Marvel in an insightful and entertaining manner.
Highlighting 50 "legendary Marvel moments," the book also treats fans to hundreds of full-color cover and page reproductions dealing with important events in Marvel's vast superheroic history.
Making the book even more enticing is the digital playback device that is attached. Containing 68 voice tracks from Stan the Man himself, the device lets readers gain special insight from the uber-imaginative creator. These selected excerpts from an interview with Lee enhance the printed information and illustrative glory found within the pages to such a degree as to make this a must-have for Marvel fans, comic book enthusiasts, pop culture nuts, or what have you.
If I were to wish one thing about this book, it would be that it could be thicker, with more pages and more information. Considering the years Roy Thomas spent behind the scenes at Marvel, he is in a position to reveal historical tidbits that many fans-turned-researchers could only dream of. As it is, he brings to light several items that I never knew, even after close to 35 years of reading comics. You might be surprised, as I was, to learn that Marvel's character the Black Panther once changed his name for political reasons, or that the Comics Code Authority rejected artwork for a particular Marvel comic due to a puff of smoke in the panel. Interesting stuff, to be sure.
Stan Lee's Amazing Marvel Universe is highly recommended for all fans of superhero comics, comic book history or Marvel Comics in general.

A true friend in The Marvel Marching Society.......2007-02-22
If you are a comic fan, this book is a must read
If you are a fan of the history of comics, this book is a must read
If you love Marvel comics, this book is a must read
Former Marvel editor Roy Thomas composed and writes the true pictoral history of Marvel comics, better than anyone has-because he was there for most of it. Stan "the Man" Lee, in a special feature of this book, narrates his version of the Marvel History in a small recorder on the side of this book. This is not a book on tape, but a visual mass media production that "True Believers" and all the Merry Marvel Marching Society (Classic Marvel fans would understand that term) out there should get. If you love how your favorite favorite characters were created, this history is for you, Both Stan and Roy tell the begining of Marvel story to the present like NO ONE else could!
So Make Mine Marvel!

A DREAM BOOK FOR MARVEL COMIC BOOK FANS!.......2006-09-23
We've all heard audio commentary on DVD's but audio commentary on a book? That's just what you get in a fabulous new book from Sterling Publishing, "The Amazing Marvel Universe". The book is a beautiful, over-sized hardcover that has a very unique feature to it. It has a speaker with push buttons that play audio comments from longtime Marvel Comics writer, editor-in-chief, and publisher, the legendary Stan Lee. The book itself is written by another Marvel legend, himself a former Marvel Editor-in-chief as well as writer and comics historian, Roy Thomas. The book features Stan's choices of the 50 greatest moments in Marvel Comic's history.
These moments begin not with Marvel Comics, but rather in the Golden Age era of Timely comics when a young Stanley Leiber took the pseudonym of Stan Lee and had his first comic story published, a two-page Captain America text story in Captain America #3 in 1941. As you flip through the 200 page book and read about these great moments in Marvel history, you'll see a number that corresponds to the appropriate audio track to hear Stan's comment on that particular event. There are 68 comments in all for a total of 45 minutes of audio.
One of the interesting moments to make the Top 50 moments is the second one which introduced Fin Fang Foom in Strange Tales #89 from 1961. This is chosen I think as an example of pre-super hero Marvel Comics and how the restrictive Comics Code was dealt with by Stan. Of course the first major moment comes with the introduction of the Fantastic Four in November 1961. In his audio comment, Stan relates how he was about to quit the comic book business and was asked by publisher Martin Goodman to come up with a team of heroes to compete with DC's Justice League. Stan decided to do a hero book the way he wanted to, thinking it would flop. Of course, the rest is history.
In talking about the Hulk, we hear the oft-told story of how the Hulk's color was changed from grey to green because the printer was having a hard time getting the grey a consistent color. Stan says he decided to do a book about Thor because he wanted to have a mythological God, and the Norse mythology was not as well known as Greek or other myths. Other great moments that made the list are the release of Spiderman #1, X-men #1, Avengers #1, Daredevil #1 etc. But don't think it's all about number one issues. Once you move into the mid-60's, the moments focus on the first appearance of various characters as well as classic storylines.
One moment that I was very excided to see make the list was the wedding of Reed Richards and Sue Storm in Fantastic Four Annual #3 in 1965 and starring just about every hero and villain in the Marvel Universe. I remember buying that comic at a convention sometime in the 70's and still have it today. Other great moments include the first appearance of the Silver Surfer and Galactus, The Black Panther, and one of my personal favorites, The Vision. The Vision was a brilliant concept by writer Roy Thomas who used his love of Golden Age heroes to come up with his unique android creation.
The Kree-Skrull War, the Death of Gwen Stacy, the debut of the New X-Men, they are all here and you could not find two men better fit to present these 50 great moments than Stan Lee and Roy Thomas. Loaded with great art by the likes of jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Wally Wood, John Buscema, Neal Adams, Jim Steranko, and John Romita! This is an absolute must have for fans of marvel Comics. Well worth the $50!
