4 out of 5 stars An Essential for New Collectors.......2007-09-06

Like many people who collect depression glass, I stumbled into it while breaking up housekeeping in my grandmother's house last summer. As we went through her cabinets and packed up the things she couldn't take to her assisted living facility, I found numerous pieces of pretty colored glass that I took simply because I enjoyed the various colors and patterns. When my mom suggested that some of it was depression-era glass, I went to the library and found a previous edition of the Florence's book and went nuts when I saw what these pieces were worth. My grandma did too! Later that fall, the book was indispensible when we were cleaning out my great-grandmother's house to put it up for auction. I found 5 large boxes full of glass. This book was very useful in helping catagorize what I had, and how much to insure all of it for.

This edition of the book is great because of it's photographs of each pattern. It makes it very easy to identify a lot of pieces just on sight. It also contains extremely useful information on reproductions which is fantastic to have when looking for glass, particularily at flea markets, estate sales and online where a lot of people mislabel patterns. The pricing is also helpful so you can see when people are simply trying to make a huge profit, rather than asking a reasonable amount.

The reason I only gave this book 4 stars, though, is because there are many patterns that are not included in this edition. In the foreward, it's stated that not all patterns are contained because it would cause the price of the book to increase. However, by excluding several patterns, you are forced to purchase another book which means spending more money as well. The book is also difficult to bring along to antique stores because of it's size--most stores won't let you bring in a large purse or bag. But overall, if you are a new collector or looking to become one, this is an important book to have in your library.

5 out of 5 stars depression glass.......2007-09-06

If you are interested in depression glass you will love this book! It is full of useful information.

4 out of 5 stars Review for Collector's Enclyclopedia of Depression Glass .......2007-06-26

The book has a well written narrative for each pattern along with photographs so that you can identify the dishes you have in your collections. There also is a guide provided to give you an idea of the value of your dish. A very useful product for the average consumer if you are estate sale shopping or having a garage sale.

1 out of 5 stars Not what I would consider an Encyclopedia.......2007-05-13

In my opinion, this book was a big disappointment. I was expecting more of an "Encyclopedia." The book provides incomplete lists of what specific pieces make a complete set in a particular color/pattern. The photos are lacking in detail making pattern identification difficult and/or just plain lacking so you can't determine what a particular piece to a set should even look like. A better title would be "Examples of Depression Glass and Values."

5 out of 5 stars Nice compliment to Warmans Field Guide.......2007-02-16

Good information, especially on how to spot reproductions. I also like the extensive photos of different pattern pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Never Enough Information to Learn about Depression Glass.......2007-05-08

My wife is a very active collector of all types, manufacturers, styles and colors of depression glass. Over the years she has become quite proficient in her knowledge but always appreciates a good authoritive up to date source of pricing, photo and description. This photographic reference along with pricing has been a welcomed addition to her book collection. The book is very well done with clear photos and good product descriptions. Pricing will always be difficult to lock down in print as prices vary from region to region but as a reference source to see what direction and what pace the pieces are moving in value as compared to earlier editions of pricing guides, this book does well. I would see this book in the hands of both an experienced collector as well as someone just starting out to enjoy this facinating type of collectible. There is a lot of knowledge to be gained from this book.

4 out of 5 stars Mauzy's Depression Glass: A photographic reference with prices.......2007-04-02

I thought the pictures were very clear and the details sharp. I liked the general layout of the text.

5 out of 5 stars Only 5 star collector book I've seen! Just super!.......2006-01-31

Wow, is this a mature book. It covers nearly every pattern I've run into, gives a good history and overview of nearly every one, has realistic prices, lists each piece, identifies and describes (yes, describes) how individual reproduction pieces can be spotted. The patterns are listed alphabetical.

The only way I'd improve on it (and this goes for all these books) is adding a little cross-referencing between similar patterns. I've had to write in the book "similar patterns: ..., ..., ...".

5 out of 5 stars Mauzy's Depression Glass: A Photographic Reference And Price Guide.......2005-07-20

I have purchased many books in the past on depression glass, antiques, 40's, 50's and 60's era. But this book is my far the best written, best photos and gives the best details I have yet to see. I will be looking for others done by this author as well. I was suprise to see all the information that was put into this. Absolutely recommend for any antique dealer or collector of any type of glassware.

5 out of 5 stars Best glass book ever.......2001-07-15

This book is the Best!!!!!!!! The pictures are clear and the patterns are easily identifiable. The authors show reproductions right next to old pieces to show the differences clearly between the two. I can't wait for more. Lets hope they continue to do more books on depression glass.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Don't Rely on These Values.......2007-09-06

This book is a fantastic take-along for going to antique stores and garage sales and the like. It contains several helpful sections to help you identify patterns including a catagorized section of borders (birds, floral, art deco, etc.) and a shape guide which is primarily useful when looking for plates and serving pieces. All of the photos of actual pieces are in color. This book also contains several patterns that Gene Florence's Collector's Encyclopedia of Depression Glass does not.

One thing about this book that needs to be mentioned is the large discrepency in value for many pieces between the Warman's guide and Florence's guide. I don't know if this is because this edition is already 3 years old or what. You may feel like you are getting an incredible deal when you are actually not. This book also doesn't contain much information on each pattern except for the basics and it doesn't have much good information on reproductions.

This is a great field guide for glass, but it's good to have a back-up, more recent guide for values.

5 out of 5 stars Warman's Depression Glass.......2007-02-17

5 out of 5 stars This is the best field guide I've ever seen.......2006-02-17

I love this book and recommend it to any collector of depression glass, especially if you are anovice. The thumbnail guides are easy to use and great for identifying just about any pattern. This has become my bible for identifying and valuing auction buys and yard sale finds. I hope Warmans considers another volume to acccomodate some of the patterns not covered in detail in this book.

5 out of 5 stars I use it all the time!!!.......2003-12-20

I purchased this book about 3 months ago and have almost worn the cover off of it already. I like the thumbnails in the beginning of the book that help you quickly identify the pattern. Although the photos are in black and white, I feel that I am able to identify the patterns quite easily. It is also small enough to fit into my purse or coat pocket when I go to auctions. I think I am getting a much better grasp of various patterns by using this book. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in a take-along book. I would also recommend having accesss to Warman's regular edition of Depression Glass for further reference.

Book Description

This colorful book is a fascinating compendium of the hand-made, mold blown glassware produced for use in homes and businesses from the early twentieth century, on through the Depression era, and into the 1950s and '60s. This beautiful glassware, produced in Morgantown, West Virginia, is displayed in over 860 color photographs. The decorations that adorn this brilliant glassware are illustrated among the photographs. The reader will become familiar with the striking colors, etchings, cuttings, and cased filament stems used to make Morgantown glass distinctive and immediately appealing. Included in the text are a history of the Morgantown Glass Works (under various names and ownerships), a review of glass making techniques--including descriptions of specific techniques given by Morgantown employees themselves, and a survey of the decorative techniques employed by the firm. A detailed bibliography, an index, and values round out the presentation.

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful and helpful reference .......2006-05-29

I love this book as it opened my eyes to the beauty and rarity of Morgantown Glass (Economy Glass, Old Morgantown Glassworks, Morgantown Guild also included as this company went through huge changes trying to survive the Depression.) The pictures are exceptional, the information relevent and well-researched. The only problem I have with this reference tool is that it is hard to navigate for specific items. The Glossary is wonderful, but a bit murky as to which name or number goes with which item. Regardless, it is a stunning addition for any American glass collector.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book .. Highly recommended.......1999-08-25

4 out of 5 stars Wow! So many patterns!.......2006-11-14

I had no idea how many types of Early American Pattern Glass there were. This book has a section on history, manufacturers and reproductions as well as listings with drawings of glassware in this category. Like the previous reviewer, I felt photos would have been better than drawings because the drawings are too small to pick out details to help identify specific patterns easily. Maybe a combination of drawings with photos would be nice, however, I am sure finding examples of all the glassware could be rather difficult! Many of us see older glassware and think "Grandma had that", never realizing that Grandma's grandmother actually had it first! This book would be an excellent addition to a reference library on Early American Pattern Glass, but definitely don't use it exclusively to identify glassware of this type.

    4 out of 5 stars Warman's Pattern Glass.......2000-03-27

This book was organized in a very concise easy-to-use fashion, giving manufactuers' and other pattern names for each design illustrated. The only drawback that I found with this book was the fact that the illustrations were not always as accurate as a photograph would have been.

Full lines of dinnerware and their companion patterns are listed along with bedroom, bath, and decorating pieces, along with information gathered from original catalogs and reprints, glass club newsletters, company brochures, trade journals, company advertising, and from many dedicated dealers and collectors. This book is an essential guide to American elegant glass.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best References I Own.......2003-12-11

Being in the hobby of collecting glass as I am for over a decade, becomes alot more interesting when you have a fantastic book like this to refer to.

This book offers tremendous return for your dollar as far as what it gives you. Concisely written, easy to read, well planned and designed value guides on the same page with the pattern you are researching, are ideal. The number of pictures you get of any pattern is by far, more detailed than any other reference I have seen. The number of pieces made that are listed ALSO seem more complete. You will see a wide array of all the patterns in all the colors which is incredible as well. As much as I am a fan of Gene Florences' wonderful glassware references of which I have many, THIS beats his Elegant Glassware of The Depression Era. It just is more complete. It also shows patterns that he does not include.

If you collect, sell, have an interest in glassware or all of the above like me, you too, will want to add this volume to your glass reference library.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2003-04-14

This book was well worth buying! Had the patterns I was interested, plus more, I've even started new collections from patterns I saw in this book. Great pictures, too. The Kovels did it again!

2 out of 5 stars Incomplete, not recommended especially the beginner.......2001-03-23

This was the first reference book I purchased when I began collecting depression glass. Although there are color photos, few patterns are represented. The patterns of manufacturers are line listed at the end of the depression glass section but quite a few of the patterns are not represented in the detail (the most important) section of the book. Representation of the patterns detailed are in a very poor quality black and white, making it difficult to match a piece of glassware with the pattern. Although Kovel seems to be a well respected authority in a number of collectible arenas, I saw no sign of expertise in this book. I would not recommend this book to anyone especially beginners.

Super pictures to help identify types of glass, with good history of each. Exciting to see the actual worth of items. Perfect size book (not bulky) to take with you when exploring the antique stores. I highly recommend this book.
