5 out of 5 stars Guide to Ideal Dolls.......2007-01-11

I am a Shirley Temple Collector. I use this book all of the time to identifiy valuable dolls and outfits. I have learned so much from this book. A must have for anyone who collects dolls.

5 out of 5 stars In a word.....SUPERB!.......2006-07-12

Judith Izen has hit another homerun with this excellent book for collectors of Ideal dolls. There are literally hundreds of wonderful color photos throughout the book. It is a pleasure just to leaf through the high quality, glossy pages. Even if you are not a collector, it would still be interesting to have the book as a conversation piece. Anyone who ever had a doll when they were young would love to look through to see if their favorite dolly is here. The book is also very well written with plenty of information about individual dolls and the different types of dolls. The 5 stars are well deserved.

4 out of 5 stars Judith Izen knows Ideal Dolls.......2006-03-02

I have several of Izen's books and I'm never disappointed with them. I especially like the section on the PlayPal family group; I found a couple of variations that I don't remember seeing before. There are a few I'd like to have seen more pictures and info on, but I guess something has to be saved for the next book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Value.......2007-05-07

This book is very helpful tool to determine values and identification of collectible model trains. There are numerous good quality pictures and a very complete listing of models. Valuation of trains are in line with other publications. Very good reference for a collector or a model train dealer.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, but ..........2006-07-20

The 6th edition is much improved over previous editions, especially with more and clearer pictures. It does have two faults -- almost nothing on pre-war American Flyer accessories (neither did previous editions) and seems to have left out Marx 3/16 scale tinplate cars, a very popular catagory, and which was included in previous editions.

5 out of 5 stars A 'must' for any avid train collector.......2006-07-07

For the first time in full color, the updated 6th edition of O'Brien's Collecting Toy Trains pairs photos of the leading brands with listings of collectible pieces and their values. Over a thousand such photos provide visual reference to updated prices of over 6,000 train listings, organized handily by maker name for quick reference. David Doyle is a renowned toy expert who has produced catalogs of Lionel trains before: O'Brien's Collecting Toy Trains expands to other makers, includes color sidebars of data and information, and is a 'must' for any avid train collector.

5 out of 5 stars AWSOME BOOK!.......2006-04-02

When I bought this book I was IN heaven It had all of the pictures I wanted to see except for the cover car.It hardly had any of my cars but Im okay with IT.

5 out of 5 stars best purchase ever.......2006-01-17

This little book fits right into your pocket. You can take it with you when you go on your "treasure hunts"

2 out of 5 stars Good information, but too incomplete........2004-02-29

This book has some good information, but is very incomplete. It does not even contain the deora car that is on the front cover and title page of the book!!! This book only lists mint in package prices and many cars have been left out. It also contains very little variations. If you are looking for a complete price guide, look somewhere else.

2 out of 5 stars Wish this Guide was more comprehensive.......2003-07-24

It is not clear in the description of this book that only a relatively small sample of Hot Wheels are featured and the only values listed are for "mint packaged vehicles". Because of these limitations, this book was of little value to me.

5 out of 5 stars Continuing a doll legacy............2007-06-14

I own all of the Patsy Moyer Doll Identification & Value books, and I am never disappointed. The photos are always so wonderful, and the information very helpful ...(especially when Patsy identifies the more obscure collectible dolls).

Also, the all the Moyer books are printed on quality paper, etc...

As any Moyer fan will tell you, once you buy one volume of Patsy's books, you will want to go back and buy ALL of her other volumes!

There are so many dolls out there, that truly, an author would need to compile all the information in many (many) volumes,-- which is exactly that Patsy has done, throughout her career.

By the way, Patricia R. Smith was the original author to have started the trend in compiling doll information into many encyclopedic hardback "Volumes" (except that Patricia called her books "SERIES" rather than "VOLUMES"). Infact, I believe that Patricia Smith started her doll encyclopedias way back in the 1970's!

Patricia Smith's very first "Series" are now hard to find , since they've been out-of-print for so long. (I was able to find all of Patricia Smith's early doll Series at a second-hand bookstore, many years ago).

Anyhow, after Patricia Smith retired, that's when Patsy Moyer took over the legacy (ie: to place all the doll information into encyclopedic volumes).

I believe that Patsy Moyer has done an outstanding job, since Patricia Smith has since left us, and I'm sure it was hard to fill Patricia Smith's shoes.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty pictures, but..........2000-03-05

This beautiful hard-cover makes a very nice coffee table book, but I don't recommend it for someone looking to do any in-depth doll research. The pictures are lovely, but details are scant. In most cases, the doll's height measurements, characteristics, year of production, etc., are not even listed. She also throws in quite a few new artist dolls and 70's fashion dolls which don't seem to fit in with the rest of the book and are of little interest to vintage doll collectors.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous volume covering the modern collectible dolls........1999-04-27

Each chapter provides an overview of the dolls and what to look for in that type of doll. Estimated values are shown. The pictures are superb- almost like seeing the dolls themselves. With its heavy lifetime laminated cover, the book weighs 3 pounds !! It's a keeper.

    Book Description

Many new color photographs showcasing thousands of machine-made and contemporary marbles have been added to make this book an even bigger Big Book of Marbles. This third edition brings marble collectors even more information, with added discussion on marbles at auctions, art glass and new comics, and listings of marble clubs. Grist has also drawn from one of his other books, Machine-Made Contemporary Marbles, for this new edition. Now with almost 400 large, detailed full-color photographs, this book is the essential resource for the marble collector. Fifty new shots have been added to the 400 detailed color photographs, and over 1,000 marbles produced by West Virginia companies have been identified for this new edition. The author enlisted the help of knowledgeable historian Ron Shepherd, co-founder and past president of the West Virginia Marble Collectors Club for this volume.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Marbles.......2007-09-21

Everett Grist's Big Book of Marbles is very comprehensive and extremely well illustrated. It will be a great reference for both hand-made and machine-made marbles. The price estimates given for the illustrations are realistic in my opinion and will be helpful in valuing my collection.

2 out of 5 stars Some nice pictures, but woefully inadequate.......2007-06-17

I decided after attending a national collector-run marble show in my area to get this updated Third Edition of Grist's book, because it looked like it would have enough new pictures to make identifying all those troublesome common marbles a possibility. And the pictures in the book are nice, being clear and color-accurate, and showing multiple marbles so one can see the range of designs/colors that fall within a category. However, I've always considered Grist to be a lazy author, and this just confirms it. Yes, it takes some work to get the pictures of so many marbles, but that is something almost anyone could eventually do. This is sub-titled a 'comprehensive' ID book, so I expected Grist to deliver. He does not even come close to delivering on that promise! First of all, many marbles are left out and many more poorly dealt with. As new as I am to marbles, even I know that there are subtle differences that help one to differentiate between marble companies. Yet Grist has virtually NO TEXT explaining how to ID various types of marbles. It is simply pictures and an occassional comment, and as we all know, pictures of certain marbles, such as cateyes, do not do justice in showing the differences. Those need to be EXPLAINED (how many vanes, shape, etc) because the differences usually do not show well in pictures. None of this happens. Many of the Peltier marbles are simply lumped together as 'Champion Jrs.' with none of the common names used in the trade included. And as far as being a comprehensive value guide, only ranges are given with no differention for size or condition given. That is hardly a comprehensive price guide! On top of that, most prices on common marbles (under $10 each) appear to be grossly inflated over what is actually happening in the marketplace today. I wish I could get those prices for my commons - I'd be rich! The final insult is the poor editing done in the book. "Peltier" is spelled "Pelitier" half the time. There are pictures where the heading states "row 1" when it means "column 1." Just plain sloppy. Most pictures of the rarities have no prices at all and only general category IDs for the entire group shown. In general, a nice picture book but nothing about it is 'comprehensive' - just more false advertising. Why can't anyone put out a book with the quality and extent of pictures Grist does and the helpful, detailed text and variety listings such as Block attempts? Then we would be approaching a 'comprehensive ID and value guide.' So far, I've found nothing close.

4 out of 5 stars Good marble identification book.......2005-08-29

Excellent book for identification of marble types and values, and for general history of marble manufacture and select manufacturers. Grist details characteristics of marbles to identify the manufacturing method and general production dates, but you cannot identify marbles to manufacturer or more specific production dates by this book. Excellent pictures and selection of marbles. Overall, this is a good quality marble book.

4 out of 5 stars Really Great Book on Marbles.......2005-01-06

As a serious marble collector, I think this book is invaluable. It's informative and very well put together. I believe it could also work well for non-marble collectors. Marbles are pretty universally fascinating and this book can inform anyone about the worth and characteristics of marbles.

4 out of 5 stars Second Edition of a Beautiful Volume on Marbles !.......2000-04-08

This second edition is updated for 2,000. 190 pages with hundreds of large, full color, sharp photos. Major topics include: Who Can You Trust?, Manufacturers, Antique and Machine Mades, Rarities, Marble Boxes, Christmas Cards, Clubs, Paper Items, etc, etc. A great reference for marble fans.

    Book Description

Our fourth edition promises to be the most user-friendly Matchbox collector's guide ever produced. While most publications on this subject are organized by model number or year of introduction, this book is arranged alphabetically by model name and description. Well over a thousand photographs are included in this latest edition, with multiple variations pictured of selected models, all incorporated into a cohesive guide to early Lesney models, the Matchbox basic (1 - 75) series, Two-Packs, Matchbox Collectibles, 2004 values. AUTHORBIO: Dana Johnson is an authority on collectible toy cars, including Matchbox, Hot Wheels, and many diecast models. His extensive personal collection includes mostly diecast models from all over the world. He has written several books: Matchbox Toys, 1947 to 2003, Toy Car Collector's Guide, and Collector's Guide to Diecast Toys Scale Models. REVIEW: This book will have collectors racing to the bookstores. It is an all-new revised edition, this time organized alphabetically by model name and description for ease in identification. Well over 1,000 photographs are included.

3 out of 5 stars Matchbox collecting supplement, not a necessity.......2005-10-10

I collect superfast Matchbox from 1969-present. This book only lists 1-75 (1/64th scale) Matchbox cars which is fine for my use. It is good becasue it lists all models in alphabetical order so you can cross-reference the number (1-75) of the model - most model numbers are not imprinted on late model cars so it is helpful in that respect. However, I found it lacking in the number of variations it listed. There is no consistent differentiation between wheel type (other than RW and SF), interior color, stickers/decals or other minor variations. This guide does not use the same numbering system as Charlie Mack's Encyclopedia (e.g. 14 A 3) making it difficult to have the references compliment each other. This guide does list more recent models where as Charlie Mack's guide is typically long overdue when a new edition comes out. But again, this one is not as complete regarding model variation so you may not know if you are collecting all the variations of a particular model you want in your collection. Another positive point of this book though is that not all pictures are of perfect cars -- the cars in the photos have a little play wear and is more reflective a practical collectors cars rather than some ideal collection most of us will never have. Lastly, in comparison to Charlie Mack's guide, I find it nice becasue most of this book does dedicate it's picture space to the 1-75 models. One of the dissappointments I have found with Mr. Mack's guide is that it lists a lot of subtle variation (i.e. light blue, mid blue and dark blue Soopa Coopa) but does not show pictures on how to tell the difference (neither does this one -- it doesn't even try to differentiate). Also, much of the picture space in Mr. Mack's guide is with models that no one I know really collects (i.e. NOT 1-75 series, super kings and models of yesteryear). I'm still not sure where 1/2 of the pics in Charlie Macks book come from (I've been collecting MB superfast for 20 years) -- perhaps thats why it is called an encyclopedia. Dana Johnson's book simplifies things but does not take it to the next level by any means.

Basically, I use Dana Johnson's book as a supplement to find model numbers so I can look up varaitions in late model cars in Charlie Mack's guide. I do think Mr. Macks guide can be too complete, in that it lists more model variations than most people can possibly collect. However, Dana Johnson's guide is too incomplete. I prefer Mr. Macks guide becasue it lists all known variations and allows me to decide which variations I think are significant to collect.

    4 out of 5 stars everything covered.......2005-09-20

It is amazing to see every single matchbox diecast ever made into production grouped under one title. You can easily assess the value of your cars and hit the road to find precious collectables with this very usefull guide.

    4 out of 5 stars Collectors Book.......2004-12-15

Interesting book with a bias in its pictures towards Matchbox models released in the last 10 years. Great that it concentrates almost wholly on the 1-75 series Matchbox models which is all I collect. Very useful if combined with other books as a model identification guide, especially as this one is in alphabetical order and up to 2003 year. I would rate it as less than useful in terms its value to me as a price guide. There are better and more accurate books around reflecting international prices especially of the 1953 to 1969 series issues.

4 out of 5 stars An Unbiased Summary by the Author.......2004-06-22

The benefit of this book is in its arrangement. For the first time in any toy car price guide, models are listed alphabetically by model name, making this the easiest-to-use Matchbox toy collector's guide ever published.

The only compromise, due to time constraints by the publisher, is that the book only lists three-inch models, which leaves out Major Pack, Kingsize, Models of Yesteryear, Skybusters, and larger Matchbox Collectibles, hence the 4-star rating. This will thankfully be remedied with the release of Volume 2 in 2005.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Ad Figures.......2000-01-09

If you are shopping for one reference book on advertising figures, search no further. Advertising Character Collectibles is the ideal book for beginning collectors and advanced collectors alike. The items pictured in this volume are a realistic cross section of what is available in this genre. The high end, nearly one of a kind pieces are here right beside the common for Dotz shows no bias.Though it has been more than three years since the price guide was updated, the majority of the listings reflect current market value. This is the book most collectors use as a blueprint for assembling their own collections and I would know- As publisher of a monthly newsletter on advertising characters, I am in contact with hundreds of collectors on an ongoing basis.Advertising Character Collectibles is the book most often referred to- It is our bible.

4 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book To Be Enjoyed By Ad Character Collectors........1999-12-15

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Book By Judith Izen!.......2004-01-14

The Collector's Guide to Ideal Dolls ID & Values 2nd ED by Judith Izen is another great book by this author. I have been looking for information on a Miss Revlon doll for years and I opened the box and right on the cover is the information I have been looking for. I am thrilled! Any doll collector or lover would love this book. Thanks Judy for another great job! Very fast shipping and a signed copy, it doesn't get any better than this!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Ideal on Dolls.......2002-11-03

Enjoyed this book and also the prompt manner in which it was delivered to me by userbro128. It was a used book and let me tell you it did not look used at all. Highly recommend the seller and the book to any one intrested.

    4 out of 5 stars Ideal Book.......2001-07-29

The majority of the pages in this 350-page book are loaded with color photos and information on the Ideal dolls manufactured from 1907 up through the 1980s. Most dolls are pictured in their original outfits and some photos are packages of the original outfits. Also included are photos of ads for specific dolls. The book starts with a short history of the Ideal Toy Co., while the back of the book gives more information on issue dates, characteristics, and current prices.

This book is a must have for those doll collectors that want to restore a doll to original condition.

4 out of 5 stars A must have for doll collectors and dealers.......2001-03-25

Fabulous color pictures of all the dolls in the book- tons of dolls you will recognize and some you won't. Also features the manufacture marks you will find on dolls to identify them. Most of the dolls are shown in original outfits- some with original packaging and a small percentage are shown redressed. Complete with price guide.

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous & Fascinating.......2000-04-25

I truly recommend this book, not merely for finding out your Ideal doll's monetary value, but more as a walk down memory lane. Being 56 years old, I remember growing up with many of Ideal's dolls. I especially enjoyed the brief mention of the Snuggles' doll and rocking horse(which many books on dolls leave out). So, if you are tired of reading dribble..., then snuggle up with this pictorial walk down memory lane.
